00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:33.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: No.
00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:37.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Hey, I think you're muted.
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:39.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, yeah. Hi.
00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:41.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Oh, there we are! How are you doing?
00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:43.000
Lauren Rose: Good, how are you doing?
00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:44.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: I'm doing so good.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:46.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: How are things going down in Oktoks?
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:50.000
Lauren Rose: Good. Yeah, it's actually been a busy summer, which is nice.
00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:53.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That, like, busy, like, in practice or life, or both?
00:00:53.000 --> 00:01:01.000
Lauren Rose: Both, yeah, both summer and usually summer is a bit slower, but it seemed pretty busy in our office lately.
00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:11.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's good, that's good. I say it's 20, because the longer you're in practice, too, it seems like it, uh, the bumps up and down start to level out a little bit more, so it's not so dippy.
00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:03.000
Lauren Rose: Buzzing. Yeah.
00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:15.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, yeah, true enough. Yeah, that makes sense.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: You have all your experience, right? So…
00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:18.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Haha.
00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:27.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's great. Okay, so, um, we'll, we'll shoot for, like, about 20 minutes or half an hour. We'll just have a nice little chat. You've heard my podcast before, hey?
00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:30.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:40.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, it'll be conversational. Conversational, hear your whole story. I like to… I like to… I like to… I like these anyway, because I get to know… I get to learn more about each person, which is… which is pretty cool, so…
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:35.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, okay.
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:48.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, interesting. Yeah, I'll say this is definitely out of my comfort zone, but usually it's worth it.
00:01:47.000 --> 00:02:01.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: It's hilarious, because I've, like, I think I've done, like, 200 interviews now, and so many chiropractors after, they're like, oh, I don't know if that was very good, and then it's funny, then they listen to it after, and they're like, oh, okay, it wasn't.
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:02.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, nice. Yeah.
00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:08.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And again, it's like, if we… if anything happens, or we lose internet connection, I can get it edited and stuff, so…
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:21.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: it's… it's funny, we used to have a dog, Lux, and uh… he would end up barking, so when I first started doing it, I'd always get so stressed out that he was gonna bark during the episode, and then I realized he barks at every episode, and then after… by the end, I was like, whatever. Who ca.
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:30.000
Lauren Rose: Okay, yeah, because I was just thinking, like, my cat is around, but if I lock her upstairs, she'll howl, so I'm like, what's worse, howling, or her just, like, being around? I don't know.
00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:38.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Being around is cuter, too. And like I said, I don't, like, I just usually take clips of the video part of it, so I'll just take clips, but then we'll use, like, obviously mostly just the audio.
00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:40.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, okay.
00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:42.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So, cool. Are you all ready?
00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.000
Lauren Rose: I think so, yeah.
00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yes, you'll rock it.
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:47.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Quick.
00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:50.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And just to get this recorded, we'll get we'll get it ro.
00:02:55.000 --> 00:03:10.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Well, hello everybody, and welcome to another episode of The Informed Chiropractor. This is Dr. Don MacDonald, your host. Today, I have a guest from our very own province. I haven't had that many, just from Alberta, and she's from a place called Okotoks, Alberta, which is just outside of Calgary.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:20.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: She's a 2019 graduate of the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. I got to spend some time with her. She came to our pelvic floor seminar in Calgary, and I just wanted to.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:25.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Maybe share her story with everybody. So welcome to the podcast.
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:27.000
Lauren Rose: Hi, thanks for having me.
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:34.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's so good. So, I like to start always with just learning a little bit about how you even found out about chiropractic in the first place.
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:48.000
Lauren Rose: Well, um, so I actually have a degree in kinesiology from the UFC, and, um, I always thought I was gonna go into, like, being a kinesiologist. There was, um…
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:41.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Mmhm.
00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:51.000
Lauren Rose: There was someone that was, uh…
00:03:51.000 --> 00:04:04.000
Lauren Rose: he, like, helped pre-diabetic and pre-metabolic disease people, um, not to gain those diseases, so I was like, oh, that seems pretty interesting. But then there was a career fair on, and, um…
00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:19.000
Lauren Rose: one of my friends pulled me aside and said, Oh, hey! There's like us. There's a college from New Zealand that's presenting, but they're not in the actual career fair section. They were in their own separate room, like a little ways down. So I had not.
00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:38.000
Lauren Rose: any idea about it, so I was like, okay, I'll go with you. Um, and there was not that many of us in the room, but Dr. Phil McMaster was there recruiting with Dr. Anna Heath, um, and they, honestly, the way they explained chiropractic care, I'd never heard before.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:50.000
Lauren Rose: Um, like, in kinesiology, I always remembered it, we were learning about, like, body processes, and I was always like, yeah, but where does it start? Like, where's the start point? Yeah, I know all these processes, but, like, how…
00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, bye.
00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: But why did that happen?
00:04:50.000 --> 00:05:07.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, like, where did it start from? And it just that always bothered me. And then suddenly, Phil's talking about innate intelligence and the whole philosophy behind chiropractic. And I was like, whoa. I just felt like all through my body. And it was one of those times where.
00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:17.000
Lauren Rose: I was like, no matter what, I have to go there, and I have to learn chiropractic, and I have to learn it from this man, and the rest is kind of history from that, so… yeah.
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:20.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So had you ever had experience with chiropractic before? Have you had it when you…
00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:34.000
Lauren Rose: Oh, kind of funny. I had, um, but I didn't know because I, my mom had, she had lots of experience with chiropractic care. Um, and then she started seeing, uh, NUCCA chiropractor in Calgary and.
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:29.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Thank you.
00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:51.000
Lauren Rose: She didn't say it was chiropractic, but this guy he was just full of life, full of vitality. She loved him, and she was like, Yeah, it's called Nuka, but she didn't know what it was, and all she's like. All he does is just like tap right here. And so I started going with her and.
00:05:51.000 --> 00:06:07.000
Lauren Rose: So at that time, I didn't know it was chiropractic care. And this guy, he was just so vibrant and we just loved him. And every time we saw him out and about, he'd shout to us from like all the way across a store or all the way across like Bish Creek Park when we'd go walking.
00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:22.000
Lauren Rose: And he was just, he just had it. He just had that something. And so then looking back now, I'm like, oh my god, that was my first experience with chiropractic care, but I didn't know until I started learning at the school. And I was like, I have been under chiropractic care. And then.
00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:24.000
Lauren Rose: Um…
00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000
Lauren Rose: I started seeing a chiropractor after that, obviously, but…
00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:41.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's so funny, I find that sometimes happens when you start to see… so if you see parents, and then they bring their kids in, and their kids have been under care the whole time, but because they never really started as a new patient or new practice member, they don't actually know why they're going.
00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:28.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:44.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, yeah, totally.
00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:47.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Because they're like, I just always went, like, I don't know.
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:59.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, I try to be cognizant of that with my um practice members who are younger and kind of becoming older, I try to be like, oh yeah, you probably don't know what I'm doing, but it's hard sometimes because.
00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:14.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: It's so true. And again, I think that's a good thing to remember for a lot of people, too, because it is funny when they don't even know. Because I've also had a new practice member come in, and they used to see a chiropractor because their parents saw a chiropractor, but they said, well, I don't know why we went.
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:17.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, yeah.
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:25.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And then… but now that… but now they're having whatever, like, a problem, they think, and now they're coming and seeing chiropractor, but they used to see them when they were a kid, but they don't know why.
00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:26.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, totally. Yeah.
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:37.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So, um, so how was that for you to go to a whole new country? Like, was that quite scary for you? Like, just to say, you know, I'm going from Calgary, I'm heading to New Zealand.
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:49.000
Lauren Rose: Um, that was part of the draw, to be honest. I had some friends that had visited New Zealand and loved it, so, um, it was kind of on my radar to go, and then after hearing Phil.
00:07:49.000 --> 00:08:04.000
Lauren Rose: talk about chiropractic, and then also being in New Zealand, and he showed videos and pictures and stuff. And I was like, Yeah, I'm in my family was pretty devastated. They came and moved me out and everything, and was very sad to leave. But.
00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:19.000
Lauren Rose: I just, yeah, I loved the experience, I loved it, and I always knew I was gonna just stay there just for school, and I wouldn't move there permanently, so that, I think, mentally made it easier, because I knew I was coming back, so, um, yeah, it was amazing. That was part of the goal.
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:16.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:23.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: To say that they knew they weren't gonna… you weren't gonna find somebody there, and then… and then get married, and then move there, or something.
00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:29.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, I mean, that was everyone's joke. But I was like, I'll bring them back with me if that happens.
00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:48.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Right. We always say, most of the time, it's the woman that's the boss in your way. They bring… they bring the other person back. So, um, you got through chiropractic school, and, um, how… how are, like, for board exams and stuff coming back? Because, um, I know we're… it was funny, because we were just talking to someone who their student… their kids are going to Scotland.
00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:35.000
Lauren Rose: Funny, yeah.
00:08:48.000 --> 00:09:05.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: to the chiropractic school there. And it's not regulated yet because the education is slightly different. I was just talking to Dr. Liz Walker from New Zealand on the last podcast, and she went to the States and they couldn't even practice in the States yet because they don't do physio and the education is not quite the same.
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:10.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So, for you, coming back to Canada, like, there's no problem as far as writing Canadian boards?
00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:14.000
Lauren Rose: No, there was no problem. I'd say, um…
00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:26.000
Lauren Rose: like, there… half of us that did the exams together in my class failed Part A, and half of us passed, but then they did it another time and then passed later. Um…
00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:27.000
Lauren Rose: So then…
00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:46.000
Lauren Rose: I would say too, like the school set us up really well for the practical portion because of the way they do their practical exams at the New Zealand College. They don't give you any prep time into your cases. So then when we had prep time for the board exams, I was like, this is awesome. Like I get time to.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:50.000
Lauren Rose: like, gather my thoughts.
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:54.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, well, usually you're on the fly, which is, well, like, that's like real life, but…
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:09:53.000 --> 00:10:08.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So I found the board exams. Yeah, there was no trouble there. I found a lot of vitalistic chiropractors that I could talk chiropractic with the same way.
00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:17.000
Lauren Rose: Because once you find one, you then find a whole bunch more. So I was kind of guided that way, which I was lucky for. But yeah, so it's pretty good.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:25.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's cool. And then, when you come to Canada, so, how did you… did you start off as an associate, or did you go to Okotoksa, or how did you end up where you are now?
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:38.000
Lauren Rose: Um, so I am an associate still at the same practice I started at. I'm working for Dr. Danny Desaulnier. Um, so he comes from a family of 46 chiropractors, and…
00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: It's crazy.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:55.000
Lauren Rose: Very like everything I was looking for. I was actually I didn't know about him at 1st but through friends and other chiropractors they were all like you gotta go meet Danny you gotta go meet Danny so I did and I actually I live in Calgary and I was living in Calgary and I.
00:10:55.000 --> 00:11:08.000
Lauren Rose: so I was like, oh, I don't know if I want to commute to Okotoks all the time. Um, so that was my only barrier, but I decided to just do it, and I've been doing it ever since, and I…
00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:20.000
Lauren Rose: honestly can't see myself leaving anytime soon, because he's awesome, and um… his philosophy is great, and the way we can talk about chiropractic is, like, everything I hoped for, so…
00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:21.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's cool. How long is the commute?
00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:24.000
Lauren Rose: It's about 30 minutes for me.
00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:26.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Okay, that's not too bad. Yeah, that's…
00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:27.000
Lauren Rose: It's honestly not too bad, yeah.
00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:40.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, I know, like, in Edmonton, if you live on the south side, and if you had to practice, like, downtown, especially in the summer with all the construction, you'd be at least 30, sometimes 40 minutes one way, even just in the city, so that's actually… that's not too…
00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:42.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, totally. And it's all highway driving, so yeah.
00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:55.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So, pretty easy. Um, so when you opened your practice, because again, we get a lot of people who are on the… who listen to the podcast that are in the growth mindset, where they want to grow their practice, what were some of the things that were really helpful for you to grow when you start… when you kind of started from zero?
00:11:55.000 --> 00:12:10.000
Lauren Rose: Um, well, first of all, I, I chose to be an associate for that reason, to have a mentor and a guide and, um, someone who's done it wrong before and something that works well.
00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.000
Lauren Rose: So that really helped me a lot.
00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:24.000
Lauren Rose: Danny is just awesome as well, where he just… he wants everyone to be under chiropractic care, as we all do. He has no, um…
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:42.000
Lauren Rose: kind of competition, so if there's a chiropractor two doors down from him, he's like, great, that's another chiropractor to help more people, um, different personality, that's what we need. So he gave me the opportunity, I think it was for, like, a month, where he just gave me all the new patients that were coming through.
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:49.000
Lauren Rose: Um, we do some online Facebook ad marketing, which is really good. Um…
00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:48.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:12:49.000 --> 00:13:06.000
Lauren Rose: I tried to do like screenings and health talks and I set some up, but when I started practice was July 2020. So it was right after he reopened his office after being closed.
00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:02.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, yeah.
00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:21.000
Lauren Rose: And then no one was really accepting health talks and groups of people. And then we did a couple of screenings, but we had to do it in a parking lot. And so that was a little unfortunate because coming out of school, I felt so strong in that.
00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:27.000
Lauren Rose: regard of, like, bringing in new patients, um, but…
00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:23.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:37.000
Lauren Rose: Just the, I guess the fact of Dr. Danny being so supportive and then the type of marketing that he did online, which was great, really helped.
00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:58.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah. And it's funny, because we Dr. Haley is associate in our practice, too, and she started right in the 2020. I think she started right in December, where you couldn't even like we were almost closed right away. And and so I think for those chiropractors it was such a challenge, either like it. It kind of some of it messed up their clinic hours, too, because when they're in chiropractic school, if Covid was there, they didn't have enough time to see.
00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:38.000
Lauren Rose: Yep.
00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:15.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Or had a challenge seeing people in clinic. And then when they're out, like, nobody wants you to come and do a lunch and learn at their business, because you're not allowed to even see people and stuff. So I think that's when I think a lot of people got online, because I think online is pretty helpful right now.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:17.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: For getting new people in.
00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:33.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, and it's funny because now we're trying to like shift from being online to be like, okay, let's do as much in person as possible because people are missing that aspect of it, as you guys are always talking about, it's polyvagal. But so it is, yeah, that's kind of interesting too.
00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:30.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yep.
00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:34.000
Lauren Rose: But…
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:49.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: It's always a switch back and forth, right? So, you came out to our seminar in Calgary, and, just, for one, kind of what interested you in coming out to that, to our, our kind of our pelvis, pelvic floor seminar?
00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:54.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And then we'll talk about, like, how you've used that in your practice.
00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:01.000
Lauren Rose: Um, so I've kind of followed you guys for a while. I like, um…
00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:05.000
Lauren Rose: the way that you were talking about the polyvagal theory.
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:11.000
Lauren Rose: And then… so I knew, I knew about you guys, and I liked the way you talked chiropractic and everything.
00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:23.000
Lauren Rose: And then there was just suddenly this, like, I think we talked about at the seminar, this crazy amount of people that had these, like, pelvic floor issues. And at this point.
00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:31.000
Lauren Rose: I kind of just knew how to adjust the pubic bone, and that was kind of it, and I was like… and that helped some people.
00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:31.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Oh yeah, totally.
00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:43.000
Lauren Rose: Um, and then I started getting all these males with tailbone issues, and I was like, I actually don't know how to help you above and beyond, like, a really quick little tailbone adjustment that may or may not do anything.
00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:46.000
Lauren Rose: Um, so then…
00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:50.000
Lauren Rose: When you the explanation of the course was like.
00:15:50.000 --> 00:16:04.000
Lauren Rose: all this stuff that I was seeing in practice, and I was like, okay, and it's in Calgary, so I absolutely have to go, because you guys don't seem to have too many local seminars, so I was like, I have to… I have to do this. It was just kind of calling to me, so, um…
00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:10.000
Lauren Rose: yeah, and it's been… it's been really cool. And the seminar was really cool, too. I kind of wasn't expecting that.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's good. In in what way? What did? What didn't you expect?
00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:28.000
Lauren Rose: I was… I was thinking I would just pull off a few more adjustments to have in my toolbox, and just be like, oh, sometimes I'll just add in a few more things. But what's really surprised me is the amount of people I'm doing it on, and…
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:43.000
Lauren Rose: how I'm doing like almost the whole protocol every time I decide to do it, and then how it just like no one walks away being like, oh, I don't really feel any different, or they don't come back to me the next time being like, yeah, I feel kind of the same like every single person has had.
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:47.000
Lauren Rose: They felt better or they have a change, so.
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:56.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, well, there you go, that's… and again, I find it's just crazy, because I think, too, and again, I think it's because of COVID, because post-COVID, everybody's way more sedentary.
00:16:56.000 --> 00:17:12.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And, and we know that fascia and muscle that doesn't fire basically glues together. And so if you have all, because they've got so much of that, uh, you know, all those, um, uh, all the mechanoreceptors, they're all through the fascia, through that bottom of that pelvic floor, and if that's all cemented together.
00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:19.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: we need to… it needs to move somehow, or else, right? Even if you remove nerve interference to it.
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:17.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, yeah.
00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:21.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: But it's glued together.
00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:24.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: It still needs to move.
00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:35.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, and, like, the type of adjustments that… and releases that this protocol has, like, just seems to do it so perfectly and beautifully, and what I appreciated, too, was the…
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:44.000
Lauren Rose: I'm very hesitant to add in a lot of things to, like, a lot of techniques or something, so that's why I kind of go…
00:17:43.000 --> 00:17:47.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Or modalities, too, yeah, I totally get it, like, yeah, yeah.
00:17:45.000 --> 00:18:00.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah. And I go to someone like, will this like hinder from kind of more straight chiropractic that I like to do? But this is very the way you taught it and the way the releases are done.
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:05.000
Lauren Rose: is like very much through a chiropractic lens. So that actually surprised me a lot.
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:10.000
Lauren Rose: And I was very pleased with that.
00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Because it's almost like a tonal release, in a way. It's almost like a tone… because you can feel the change in the tone in the tissue and the nervous system.
00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:12.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:23.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And you're and yeah, it's kinda it's all because it all ties together so much. Right? Yeah.
00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:39.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, and then you can still, like, it's so easy to communicate that to the practice members that this is still very much chiropractic care, chiropractic adjustments, because even when they go to, like, other pelvic floor specialists, they're doing very different type of work, or very much more invasive.
00:18:39.000 --> 00:18:46.000
Lauren Rose: Or they have to do a bunch of exercises at home, which no one ever does.
00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:59.000
Lauren Rose: And so what we're doing is still so different and it's still and I just I can still talk about how it's influencing the nervous system the same way the adjustment does, which is why we're still adjusting your whole spine as well. So it's very cool.
00:18:57.000 --> 00:19:07.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's great. Do you have any kind of favorite stories? Like, do you have some people that you can think of that Okay, cool. Tell us some.
00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:06.000
Lauren Rose: I have a lot.
00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:22.000
Lauren Rose: I'll start with the coolest one. So this lady, she has pulmonary hypertension. So she has lots of fluid retention. And I didn't know, I didn't know too much about this condition and what it actually looked like in a.
00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:36.000
Lauren Rose: real human being in front of me. Um, but apparently she has, like, a lot of extra weight, which they call water weight. And so, she'd been seeing a chiropractor regularly, and a massage.
00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yep.
00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:47.000
Lauren Rose: Regularly for, and I mean regularly as in she's going once a week for five months. And like her back felt good is what her thing was, but.
00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:42.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Mm-hmm.
00:19:47.000 --> 00:19:55.000
Lauren Rose: then when she had heard that I was kind of doing some pelvic floor work, she got interested in that, so we started doing that.
00:19:55.000 --> 00:20:10.000
Lauren Rose: once a week for her, and she lost all of her water weight. And now she's back down to her dry weight, and she has no swelling in her ankles anymore, and so she can fit regular size shoes. Now she just went and bought her 1st pair of shoes.
00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:24.000
Lauren Rose: Um, and this, being in mind, this seminar I took was only two months ago. So it's been less than two months that she's had this. And, um, so she's had this for years and years, her…
00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, yeah.
00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:23.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Wow.
00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:36.000
Lauren Rose: So that was pretty cool, like, and she can now, like, use her legs properly. She doesn't have to pull on her pants to, like, get out of the car. Um, so she is thrilled, obviously. Um…
00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:38.000
Lauren Rose: I had another lady that she…
00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:55.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: I was just gonna say, before we go to the next one, because I have one, it's just very similar to that, where she always flies home, and I think it was Brazil or something that she's from, and uh… she was having a… I was doing the pelvic floor protocol on her, and then she was always worried because her legs would swell insane on an airplane. Like, so bad that she couldn't hardly walk when she got home.
00:20:55.000 --> 00:21:13.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: and uh… and she was only under care, I think, for a couple months before she went, and then she came back, and she had no swelling on the plane at all, because, again, you take… you take that tension, because we do talk about that lymphatic drainage, and if you get that function back into the pelvic floor, again, even all the lymphatic drainage works a lot better, too, so…
00:21:13.000 --> 00:21:19.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: I was just like, every time someone has one, I'm like, I got a matched one, too. So what was your next one?
00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:29.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah. Well, it's cool because she said that to me. She said, I think it has to do with my lymphatic drainage through my pelvic floor. And I was like, yeah, I don't have to explain anything to you. That's it.
00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:31.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's awesome.
00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:45.000
Lauren Rose: Um, but yeah, and then I had this other lady, she, um, her doctor is pushing hip surgery on her, even though they've never done any imaging, so they don't even know what's wrong, but they're just gonna go in and do surgery anyways, so she's obviously very uncomfortable with that.
00:21:45.000 --> 00:22:01.000
Lauren Rose: And so I was like, well, why don't we try something different? Why don't we try this pelvic floor protocol? And so I've only done it twice on her and she's not limping at all anymore. And it's just been two weeks of this. So she's like.
00:22:02.000 --> 00:22:05.000
Lauren Rose: I probably don't have to get surgery.
00:22:05.000 --> 00:22:08.000
Lauren Rose: So that was pretty good too.
00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:17.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: I'll match… I'll match that with one other one, because I just had a practice member who had had, um… did have a hip replacement, because her… and I'd seen… I've been seeing her for, like, 15 years.
00:22:17.000 --> 00:22:31.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: she… she already had really bad hips, so she ended up getting hip replacement. They had to do a revision on the hip replacement, because they… it didn't hold, like, the post didn't stick properly, so they had to do a revision. On the revision, they cut… cut the nerve accidentally to the glute med.
00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:46.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: So after, like, she kept having a drop hip because, like, it was not firing at all. And, uh, it was funny because only about a month or two ago on her, I'm like, geez, maybe I should just try the pelvic floor protocol on her, too. So I did that on her, and I've done it probably about 3 or 4 times, and.
00:22:46.000 --> 00:23:02.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: she, she, she doesn't limp after I do that, even with a severed nerve, because I think it just redistributes that whole, like, the whole fascial system through the glutes and through the pelvis, and then there, she's able to, um, to, to walk in. Again, she's still gonna have the paralyzed.
00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:53.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, that's cool.
00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:13.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: the glute med, but it just allows, I think, the rest of the system to help compensate a little bit better, so… so she's… she's pretty happy with that, too. So, there you go, there's another match. What's the next one?
00:23:06.000 --> 00:23:09.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, that's cool.
00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:25.000
Lauren Rose: Well, and I think, like, you keep saying, too, I've heard in your previous podcasts of how, like, you're learning as you go of what more this can do, um, because, yeah, it's just like, oh, I had no idea that that… that would help this. But, um…
00:23:17.000 --> 00:23:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yep.
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:32.000
Lauren Rose: I had an 83-year-old, she had years of sciatica, and she was actually seeing me for years.
00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:49.000
Lauren Rose: Regularly as well and suddenly I just did one session of the pelvic floor protocol and her sciatica completely went away and has not come back and I haven't done I only did one session of that protocol on her and I haven't done it since and it's not come back and I was like.
00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:52.000
Lauren Rose: All right. That's pretty cool. So.
00:23:50.000 --> 00:24:07.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Well, and I think that's a great one. Is it the longer like if the fascia has been really sticky, literally, and then you release it like again, some of those times you don't have to you don't have to do it all the time. Like once. That's why you'll get some some practice members will respond really quickly because they do already have healthy fascia.
00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And then other people, if it's been sticky for a long time, it's going to take more work of the pelvic floor protocol just to have that come along. So that's pretty cool. That's cool.
00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:16.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:32.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah. And my exciting thing is, all my males that I've been doing it on with the tailbone release, or relief, um, it has given them immediate relief, and same thing, doesn't come back. And, um, I'll say to them, like, okay, we're gonna try…
00:24:32.000 --> 00:24:40.000
Lauren Rose: some… I just say I'm doing glute releases for them, like, because sometimes I don't know if they want me to work on their pelvic floor, necessarily, but um…
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:36.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:40.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah, yeah.
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:55.000
Lauren Rose: Then they'll get up. It's like we're done this session and I'm like, okay, well, come back next time. Let me know what changes you notice. Anything is the right answer. Just let me know. And they're like, oh my gosh, I already feel way better, like just getting up off the table.
00:24:55.000 --> 00:25:10.000
Lauren Rose: So they don't even have to wait a week to tell me or whatever. So yeah, that's happened to all of them. And that floored me because I had told you coming to the seminar too, like that was one of my reasons for coming was like my males with tailbone issues.
00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:17.000
Lauren Rose: And it's helped all of them, which I wasn't expecting, you know? Like, you never know, necessarily, but…
00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Okay.
00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:18.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:21.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Well, that's great. Well, cool.
00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:26.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Alright, well, thank you very much for coming onto the podcast. We're getting close to the end of our time here.
00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:28.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, thanks for having me.
00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:39.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And, and, um, I always like to end out a couple questions just for fun, so if you could zip back in time when you're, like, maybe in university, and you could talk to your younger self.
00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:42.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: What kind of words of advice would you give your younger self?
00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:46.000
Lauren Rose: Ooh, that's a good one.
00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:51.000
Lauren Rose: I think I would…
00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:53.000
Lauren Rose: like, more…
00:25:54.000 --> 00:26:05.000
Lauren Rose: Because what got me into chiropractic care or into chiropractic and into the school that I went to was innate intelligence. And that's always kind of what drives.
00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:10.000
Lauren Rose: me now, and it drives me with all my practice members, is like.
00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:17.000
Lauren Rose: I just try to listen to them, listen to their body more than talk and more than.
00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:21.000
Lauren Rose: just explain things away.
00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:32.000
Lauren Rose: And so, I think at school, I wish I would have listened to my innate intelligence a little bit more, and not been so stressed out, because looking back, I'm like.
00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:40.000
Lauren Rose: I did completely fine. I did not have to have that level of stress. It was very much me putting it on myself.
00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:56.000
Lauren Rose: Because, yeah, even like looking back, I was very inflamed, um, like high cortisol presentation and like, I didn't know it at the time, but now looking back, I'm like, wow, I was stressed. So I think just like trusting.
00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:59.000
Lauren Rose: my innate and trusting.
00:26:59.000 --> 00:27:04.000
Lauren Rose: in the path because I was guided there and I was called to it.
00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:08.000
Lauren Rose: I should have just trusted a little bit more than stressed.
00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:26.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: That's cool. Which would lead me to the next question. Um, what are some kind of gems right now that you use for yourself for self-care? Because a lot of chiropractors sometimes tend to look after their practice members better than they look after themselves. So, what are some of the things that you currently do now to help you stay regulated in practice?
00:27:26.000 --> 00:27:32.000
Lauren Rose: Um, I think the biggest thing is definitely to, um…
00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:43.000
Lauren Rose: like, stay connected with the philosophy, so I'm trying to listen to at least one podcast a week, um, so yours is really helpful. Thank you.
00:27:43.000 --> 00:27:45.000
Lauren Rose: Um, okay.
00:27:45.000 --> 00:27:56.000
Lauren Rose: and just try to get myself in that mindset on the way to work, because I do have a long drive, so that's one of the benefits, is that you can really just, like, get into the zone a lot easier. Um…
00:27:56.000 --> 00:28:08.000
Lauren Rose: And then, the thing that's changed my life the most, honestly, is, like, I've just tried to really implement a non-toxic lifestyle, or low-tox lifestyle, because it's kind of hard. But, um…
00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:07.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Yeah.
00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:20.000
Lauren Rose: that's… that and exercise is what keeps my mind healthy, my body healthy, and I notice if I'm, like… if I sway and use a little bit more of a toxic product, or use…
00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:26.000
Lauren Rose: eat too many seed oils or something like that, like, just inflaming the body with toxins.
00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:26.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Uh-huh.
00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:32.000
Lauren Rose: I really noticed it and I've noticed a huge impact on my health and even on my mood.
00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:35.000
Lauren Rose: I think going into practice with a good mood.
00:28:35.000 --> 00:28:39.000
Lauren Rose: Um, is what makes all the difference too.
00:28:39.000 --> 00:28:57.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: I was going to say, as we talk in polyvagal theory about the importance of being a strong co-regulator for PRAX members, the only way we can help co-regulate someone into a regulated state is by being regulated ourselves. And so that's super, super helpful. We always tease people saying, make sure you look at your face.
00:28:57.000 --> 00:29:12.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Before you start practice, because that social engagement system is a direct connection into our autonomic nervous system. And so, when we're in a good mood, it just reflects that positive energy right through to people, which just kind of amplify the effect of our adjustment.
00:28:58.000 --> 00:29:00.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah.
00:29:11.000 --> 00:29:15.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, and just to kind of.
00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:16.000
Lauren Rose: Uh, further…
00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:28.000
Lauren Rose: I guess plug you guys and your seminars, too, is, like, because that was the first one I'd been to, um, you guys really do practice what you preach with, like, the co-regulation, like, being in kind of a smaller setting, but then.
00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:44.000
Lauren Rose: Just you guys are so warm. It was so warm and inviting. You were very you allowed us to be really like vulnerable and like it's okay if we didn't know certain things and you really were great at mentoring and guiding us and it was just a really comfortable setting.
00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:53.000
Lauren Rose: So thank you for that. And I, it was like probably the best seminar I've been to in years. So yeah, I highly recommend. Yeah.
00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:52.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Ah, well, thank you.
00:29:52.000 --> 00:30:03.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: Well, that's awesome. Well, geez, you can be on our podcast anytime. Alright, well, thanks so much for being on the podcast, I really appreciate it. Thanks for sharing some of the stories from in practice.
00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:07.000
Lauren Rose: Yeah, thank you so much for having me. It was fun.
00:30:05.000 --> 00:30:18.000
Dr. Don MacDonald: And for everybody else out there, I hope you take some lessons and listen to some good vibes before you get to practice so that you're in that nice mood before you start practice. And we will see you all again in a few weeks.
