Daily Devotional:
“Unfinished Business, Unfailing Grace”
Philippians 1:6
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the dayof Jesus Christ.”
Have you ever looked at your own life—your spiritual growth, your character, your habits—and felt like aconstruction zone that has been stalled for far too long? It’s easy to look at our stumbles, ongoing struggles, and slow progress and wonder, “Am I actually making any headway?”
When Paul wrote these words to the believers in Philippi, he was sitting in a Roman prison. Circumstantially, things looked uncertain and incomplete. Yet Paul’s confidencedidn't rest on his environment, nor did it rest on the perfection of the Philippian believers. His confidence rested entirely on the character of the Architect.
Notice the vital truths packed into this single verse: God is the Initiator in “He who has begun” -You didn't invent your faith, and you didn't initiate your own redemption. God took the step toward you first. Your spiritual journey started with His grace, not your willpower. The Work is Purposeful in “a good work in you”- God isn't just fixing your behavior; He is shaping your soul into the image of Christ. Transformation is often slow, deep, and quiet, but it is always deliberate. God is a Finisher in "will complete it”-God never abandons a project halfway through. He doesn't get distracted, grow weary, or throw His hands up in frustration over your messy process. What His grace starts, His faithfulness carries through to the end.
Your sanctification is a lifelong process, not an overnight event. On days when you feel discouraged by your shortcomings, remember that God isn't finished with you yet. You are work in progress, but you are held by an unwavering Hand. Shift your focus and stop measuring God’s progress in your life solely by your perfection. Look at His faithfulness instead. Trust the process that growth takes time. Give yourself room to grow while staying committed to walking with Him. Ultimately, rest in His promise, for your ultimate completion depends on Christ’s strength, not your stamina.
Think back to when you first experienced God's grace or felt drawn to Him. It is easy to rely on our own efforts to keep our faith going, forgetting that salvation and spiritual growth started with God's initiative, not our own self-discipline. God is not a builder who leaves projects half-finished. His promises extend all the way to"the day of Jesus Christ." Your future transformation is guaranteed not because of your perfection, but because of His eternal character.
