David Comer, president of the Violet Crown Sports Association, joins Phil Phails to talk about how a kid who struggled with weight, fencing, and a Crohn's disease diagnosis found his identity on a bicycle. What starts as Austin cycling history unfolds into a real conversation about resilience, failure tolerance, and the quiet mentorship that holds a community together.David traces his path from a beginner terrified of cold, dark group rides to leading a 450-member club, and explains why learning to fail well matters more than any race result. He and Phil dig into a harder truth too: how fear on the road often gets expressed as anger, especially for men, and what it actually means to sit with that fear instead of masking it.This is a conversation about showing up before you feel ready, about the mentors who wait for you at the back of the pack, and about what a bike can teach you when nothing else has. What's a moment when fear showed up as something else in your own life?
