Patchwork Radio – Teaser: "The Apple Tree Mirage – Iran's 1979 Revolution & the Left's Fatal Betrayal"
Late autumn 1978, a quiet garden outside Paris. Under an apple tree sits Ayatollah Khomeini—frail, black-robed, white-bearded—speaking softly to Western journalists. He promises democracy, freedom, a republic where Marxists, liberals, secularists, and believers all have a voice. “Personal desire, age, and my health do not allow me to run the country,” he says with a gentle smile. To millions of Iranians hearing his words on smuggled cassette tapes, he sounds like a savior.
It was the opening act of a masterful deception.
Months earlier, on Black Friday in Tehran’s Jaleh Square, leftist students, Marxist guerrillas, and Islamist protesters marched side by side against the Shah. When soldiers opened fire, their blood mingled on the pavement—communists saving wounded Islamists, secular doctors bandaging religious fighters. The left believed Khomeini was their battering ram: they brought organization, strikes, and armed resistance; he brought the masses. Once the Shah fell, the mullah would retire to Qom, and socialism would rise.
They were tragically wrong.
After Khomeini’s return in 1979, the purges began. Leftist bookstores smashed by Hezbollah gangs chanting “Party, only Party of God.” The MEK’s massive June 1981 protest met with gunfire and executions. The loyal Tudeh Party clung to denial until 1983, when their leaders were arrested, tortured, and forced to confess on state TV as Soviet spies. The final horror came in summer 1988: Khomeini’s secret fatwa ordered the mass execution of “steadfast” political prisoners. In Gohardasht Prison, blindfolded inmates faced a Death Commission (including a young Ebrahim Raisi). Wrong answers meant immediate hanging—in groups, from cranes or light fixtures. Thousands vanished into unmarked graves at Khavaran.
The left helped build the machine that crushed them. They underestimated religious populism. They thought politics was class struggle. Khomeini knew it was divine authority.
The apple tree is gone, but its shadow still falls on the dust of Khavaran—where dreamers who thought they were making history became its victims.
