00:00:03
Speaker 1: Oh, oh, oh, it's Mac and Bo on your radio, baby.
00:00:07
Speaker 2: This is my friend Matt.
00:00:09
Speaker 3: Posh, come on, Posh. This is my friend T-Bone.
00:00:13
Speaker 2: Let's have some fun. I can't go to work without listening to Mac and Bone. Do it live.
00:00:29
Speaker 4: Y'all being a rookie don't mean nothing because, like, look at T-Mac last year. People say he was a rookie.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: And he went for the college.
00:00:35
Speaker 4: So that don't mean nothing. When you're on the field on Sunday, age means nothing. Like I said before, they take shots with them.
00:00:42
Speaker 1: They move them around.
00:00:45
Speaker 4: You have, like, a tall one that's 6'4. He broke a tackle and went for 55. And you have a short, shifty one that get in and out his break. So we got to come ready to play.
00:00:56
Speaker 5: Mike Jackson, one of the two stud corners on your Carolina Panthers, talking about the two rookie receivers on this Cleveland Browns team. We're getting ready to talk about the Browns, what they've been doing, and most importantly, it is time for our victory formula of the week. What can go wrong, Bone Man? Victory formula is one and one so far. Panthers one and one. And we'll talk about how they beat the darn Browns later this hour. We'll talk about the injury situation. I got told bone by multiple Panther fans on Twitter yesterday. to calm down about injuries on a Wednesday. Well, we will discuss at 845 if we are calm about all our injuries. Obviously, the Brooks one, we hated for him. And we can talk about that. Is that devastating to not have him for six to eight weeks? But also the guys that are surprises, like Devin Lloyd and Jalen Phillips on the injury report this week. How concerned are we? Or do we calm down? Because they're only Wednesday injuries, Bo. we will discuss that later.
00:01:58
Speaker 6: On i'm trying not to injury panic maybe until friday friday afternoon when it starts to get real uh but wednesday wednesday i'm cool calm baby let's see i'm not even concerned about stuff right now see if you pass the cool is a cucumber test at 8 45 okay i'll give you.
00:02:13
Speaker 5: That test there oh that sounds like an odd test but i'm here for it all right anyway um uh Let's talk about these Browns. Yeah, they've got Casey Concepcion, who is their leader in catches. Not getting a lot of yards out of them, but has 10 catches to lead them. And then they have Denzel Boston, another rookie wide receiver. He's the big dude that Jack was talking about.
00:02:36
Speaker 3: He leads them in yards.
00:02:37
Speaker 5: He's the one guy that is getting, you know, I think 16 plus yards a catch. He's making big plays. Um, but we want to hear from you guys. How do we beat the Browns? This dude says victory formula for the Browns show up at the stadium.
00:02:50
Speaker 3: There is no way bone. I am coming on here with that kind of arrogance. It's a funny line.
00:02:57
Speaker 2: I ain't doing that.
00:02:58
Speaker 3: I ain't doing that.
00:02:59
Speaker 6: This is the national football league. I'm not going to just because the pandas played well last week. There's still got to be a trust built up here. I'm not taking– I am not going to sit here and overwork the Browns.
00:03:09
Speaker 3: I don't want to act like that this week.
00:03:11
Speaker 6: They won a road game last week in the NFL for crying out loud, so I'm not going to sit here.
00:03:14
Speaker 3: And take them serious.
00:03:15
Speaker 5: I don't want to act like that this week. I feel pretty good about it, but I'm not going to do that. Now, Fiddy will probably go like eight scores galore or something.
00:03:22
Speaker 3: Tomorrow on the show. As long as he's not showing his goalless.
00:03:25
Speaker 5: It is a big game bone in that– You want to develop some consistency. Last year's team had that one little stretch of, I think, three in a row. But other than that, they could not get any consistency. Derrick Brown talked about it every week. They went to the team leader, Derrick Brown, every week.
00:03:44
Speaker 3: Why you guys win one, lose one?
00:03:46
Speaker 5: So I think even though you look at it as, well, they beat the Falcons and now they're playing the Browns, win these games that you're the better team, right? Because that doesn't always happen in the league. And start to develop some actual freaking consistency. I think that would be big. So I ask you to start us off, Bo. What would be your first thing? What do we need to do, like, strategically? Or just what do we need to do well to make sure we win this game?
00:04:10
Speaker 6: This could be a game where they can really get the run game going through two games.
00:04:16
Speaker 3: Cleveland.
00:04:17
Speaker 6: is 26 against the run, giving up 131.5 rush yards per game. They also don't run the ball on offense well. They're 31st in the league at 65.5 yards per game. So on both sides here, the Panthers' run defense, I would think, can have a pretty good day against Cleveland, and I think they can really get Chuba in this run game, hopefully no penalties. But I think the run game can really do some damage against Cleveland. I think the run game on both sides advantage.
00:04:48
Speaker 5: That Cleveland run game is like 2.8 yards a carry, 31st in yards per carry, 31st in yards on the ground per game. Yeah, go get that run defense. I thought they were good early against B. John, and then I think he started to get some. But it didn't matter at that point. We kept forcing turnovers. But, yeah, I'd love to see them. To your point about the run game, you stuff that run and get Deshaun in the third nine. Get Deshaun into third and eight. Make that guy beat you. Make that guy make plays downfield. Last week, he had a pretty good week, but I looked at his average distance of target. It was like 3.8. It was a lot of short stuff in yards after the catch. That's another thing, too. If he goes short, you've got to freaking tackle. Tackle Concepcion. Tackle these guys. The first thing I said, Bone, earlier in the show was I was going to mention– Start fast on defense.
00:05:39
Speaker 3: Get a turnover early. Get a three and out early.
00:05:42
Speaker 5: I want that crowd turning against Deshaun Watson. Deshaun Watson played good last week. He might get some grace from the crowd in the home opener. But then yesterday, there he was begging them not to boo him. You know, Bone, if he starts bad, they're going to jump on him again there. And I just think it would be big for the second straight week to have that home crowd turning on your signal caller. And I think you could do that with a fast start on defense. It's not like he hasn't played at home yet either. That's the first one.
00:06:11
Speaker 6: So they've, you know, they might, as the game begins, be all right because they won last week. But it's not going to take much to your point of that crowd to say, oh, yeah, we forgot.
00:06:21
Speaker 3: We hate this guy.
00:06:21
Speaker 5: I mean, it's the dude that told them, I don't like the booing. It's personal in the preseason. He hasn't played at home since then. So it's like, yeah, get them feeling like, oh, yeah, forget last week. I'm booing your ass. I'm ready for that. Make that crowd beg for Shador Sanders. They might anyway, but yeah. The leading rusher right now, by the way, for the Browns back is Deshaun Watson. He's at 60 yards total rushing yards this year. He got more than Judkins. Judkins is not getting much at all. A lot of it's the O-line, though. I was reading something yesterday on one of the Browns blogs. They are struggling in the run blocking grade. A lot of people are blaming the O-line. So to your point, though, defensive front. Looks like we're going to get Bobby Brown and Pat Jones back, knock on wood. Go kick their fannies in the trenches, y'all.
00:07:07
Speaker 6: If they can bottle up that defense from last week to some degree, I don't mean Devin Lloyd's going to go and have that type of game, but Deshaun Watson, Mac, has been sacked seven times this year. I think this is a game where the Panthers' pass rush could really get home against this team.
00:07:22
Speaker 5: The craziest thing, Bone, is their second and pass block win rate.
00:07:26
Speaker 3: But they've given up seven sacks in two games. It's Watson.
00:07:30
Speaker 5: He's taking the sacks like I was looking at PFF. They only attributed one of the seven sacks to an offensive lineman. That's wild. Four of them are on Watson, so he's holding it too long and stuff like that. So go get that.
00:07:43
Speaker 6: Dude down, man. Again, it's a small sample for stats. Texter's asking about the Browns' pass defense. Right now, opponents' yards per game, their pass defense is right in the middle. They've given up 205 yards per game. per game the first two, 16th in the league right now in passing yards.
00:08:03
Speaker 5: Totally mid, 16th in yards per attempt. But your point about the run defense, we got a guy on the text line saying run the ball. Of course, we always say run the ball during this segment. But to your point, they're 26th in rush defense in terms of yards per game. Chuba, can we actually not have– that would be on my formula. Actually block without holding. Offensive line, how about trying to stay relatively penalty free? And then Chuba will eat. I do firmly believe that. This texter says, you better throw it, guys. Not name Denzel Ward, because whoever Denzel covers ain't doing crap. Denzel Ward's damn good. One of the best in the league. What do you think about that? How does that adjust your passing? Well, that's why having a 1A and a 1B comes in handy. You're not predicated on one guy having to go off. Bryce Young has two guys that can do damage, so I don't worry too much about that. You go take one guy away, the other guy's going to eat. Yeah, that's the thing, is can you get after those other corners, whoever is, you know, put them in the slot too, if that gets you away from Denzel Ward, you know, stuff like that. But yeah, one guy, I don't think one corner bone is going to shut down this entire passing game. I will say this, another key is Bryce Young has to be better versus man coverage. I mentioned this last hour. I think it bears repeating. It's kind of interesting. Bryce has been feasting on primarily zone coverage. He's been killing it. 75%, 12.7 yards in attempt, 82% of the coverages he's faced his zone.
00:09:36
Speaker 3: They've been killing it. You saw it against Atlanta.
00:09:38
Speaker 5: TMAC, Coker, finding those spots on the sidelines in the zone between the DBs. Now you play the number one man team so far in the NFL. in Cleveland and Bryce has only averaging 40% completions and four yards at attempt against man.
00:09:54
Speaker 3: They got to figure out man defense this week. It's good. It'll be an interesting twist to this game.
00:09:59
Speaker 6: You know can i make a uh bold prediction or proclamation about this game chuba sets his career high for off yards in a game this week wow so you think they go run heavy in this game i think chuba's previous high is the game in germany when he ran for 153 against the Giants. I think Chuba can go for 160-ish this week.
00:10:20
Speaker 5: Does Air Idzik want to run it that much, though? I definitely think he can be really efficient, to your point. I just wonder, do you think Air Idzik is going to commit to it? Sometimes it seems like he is.
00:10:30
Speaker 3: Bored running it.
00:10:31
Speaker 6: It's fair, but the previous sector brought up Denzel Ward. Well, if Denzel Ward is going to take away your receiving option, maybe they have to rely a little more on the run game this week.
00:10:38
Speaker 5: Listen, good coaches will look at matchups, will change things up. What do they think we're going to do, right? We've been so pass-heavy, passing 61% of the time.
00:10:47
Speaker 3: What do y'all think we need to do?
00:10:49
Speaker 5: What is your element to the victory formula in Cleveland, 704-570-9610? Texter says, y'all, hadn't heard you mention this yet. Are we viewing this like the Falcons' North... Are we viewing this team as as bad as the Falcons? You addressed this earlier.
00:11:08
Speaker 6: I think they have a little more overall talent. They don't have Bijon, but their quarterback play is also not great. But I think there's a little more fight in the Browns than the Falcons right now. And their defense is definitely better. You know they're going to want to put on a performance at home for their fans. So I think this is a win for the Panthers. I don't think it comes as easy as last week. I wouldn't think so either. Now, listen, last week I thought it was going to be an eight-point game. My prediction was an eight-point game.
00:11:37
Speaker 5: The only future seer on the show was one, Fitty, birthday boy Marlon.
00:11:44
Speaker 3: Well, how do I buy 14? I'm a man.
00:11:46
Speaker 5: I'm 30. Said it was three scores galore. So, yes, you were closer to me.
00:11:52
Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
00:11:53
Speaker 5: But this man called his three scores galore shot. What do they got to do.
00:11:57
Speaker 3: This week, Fitty?
00:11:59
Speaker 2: I called my shot earlier in the week.
00:12:01
Speaker 1: Shutout.
00:12:03
Speaker 2: Three points last week.
00:12:05
Speaker 7: We're going to give up even fewer points this week, which is either two points or no points.
00:12:11
Speaker 3: We give up one safety.
00:12:13
Speaker 5: Texter704 number says, Watson is just as bad as Cooper Rush. He played good last week. But he's got two rookie receivers. Jerry Judy only has two catches. It's the rookies that are doing it. Mike Jack and Horn can shut down a couple of rooks, can't they? I think the Browns' defense is going to fight a little more than the Falcons' defense. I think that's the difference. This is the best defense we've faced, right? Isn't that safe to say? The Browns, even without Garrett?
00:12:36
Speaker 3: Yes. Although, Vers hadn't done anything yet. Vers has won pressure through two games, surprisingly.
00:12:40
Speaker 7: I know the offense is operating at a higher level right now. Could this be last year's Jets game? Where we're clearly the better team.
00:12:48
Speaker 3: But it's ugly.
00:12:49
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:12:49
Speaker 2: It's a road game. It's their home opener.
00:12:52
Speaker 7: They've got a little bit of belief after what they did last week in Tampa. They're going to fight because I don't think Todd Monk is going to let his team lay down. But this could be like a 17-6 game in the fourth quarter.
00:13:04
Speaker 5: I think it's possible, although I'd like to think Bone and Fitty, this offense is past last year, right?
00:13:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, but they're not going to score 30 every week. I mean, if they are.
00:13:14
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:13:15
Speaker 3: I'm here for it. How dare you say they're not going to score 30 every week? How dare you? I don't want to hear that. What is wrong with you? Oh, man. 704-570-9610.
00:13:26
Speaker 5: This dude says, you can't take a defense lightly that has Mason Graham, Jared Verse, and Schlesinger. Yeah, Schlesinger's a freaking baller. Mason Graham's a guy that we... Many of us have big time interested in his draft. He's got two sacks. He's their sack leader. Schlesinger's a baller. All you need to know about Schlesinger, first of all, he won defensive rookie of the year on the, well, that's not, that is the defense side of the ball. I guess I didn't need to repeat that. He won defensive rookie of the year last year. Bone, he is being compared to Luke Keekly after one season of NFL football. And I don't think it's just because he's a white linebacker.
00:13:58
Speaker 3: Oh, man.
00:13:59
Speaker 5: That might be part of it, though. It might be. He's a player, though, man.
00:14:02
Speaker 6: I forgot this came up already this week. I was looking up, hey, when's the last time the Panthers shut out a team? I had forgotten.
00:14:09
Speaker 3: The Falcons, baby. It was a year ago.
00:14:11
Speaker 5: It's always coming up Falcons. Oh man. 704 number. I'm a diehard Browns fan. I'm a transplant. I like the Panthers, but the Browns are my first love. Y'all are completely overselling us.
00:14:27
Speaker 3: This is a.
00:14:28
Speaker 5: Fan bone that is mad that we are giving his team some respect.
00:14:33
Speaker 3: This guy doesn't want us to respect him.
00:14:34
Speaker 6: We're a show that tries to respect the opponent, except for Atlanta.
00:14:38
Speaker 3: And sometimes Tampa and not usually the New Orleans. I don't know.
00:14:42
Speaker 5: Y'all, like, to Bone's point, Atlanta is not capable, are they, of going to Tampa and winning? Although Tampa looks like they have issues. But Cleveland went down there and won that football game.
00:14:53
Speaker 3: Like, that's got to be acknowledged. You know what I mean? They are not the damn Falcons who couldn't beat a peewee team at this point.
00:15:00
Speaker 6: All right, we come back on the Mac and Bone Show. Trevor Maddich, always insightful, always kind with his time. ESPN's college football analyst previews the huge weekend in the SEC and talks ACC as well on the Mac and Bone Show.
00:15:14
Speaker 3: Sports Radio, 92.7 WFNZ.
00:15:30
Speaker 7: Bye.
00:15:42
Speaker 5: Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ. Mack and Bone with you. Cruising through a Thursday. We're going to talk college football. Six AP ranked versus ranked matchups coming up this weekend. That includes some big ones in the SEC. We've obviously got some local situations here in the Carolinas that feel like crisis situations. We've got to talk some college football, and who better to do it with than Trevor Maddich. He's killing it on the college football final. I record it overnight, Boney. I watch it to start my Sunday morning, every Sunday morning, and Trevor Maddich has been a part of that college football final crew this season, doing a great job. ESPN's Trevor Maddich joins us here on the Mac and Bone Show. Hey, Trevor, what's going on, man?
00:16:27
Speaker 3: How you doing?
00:16:28
Speaker 1: I'm doing great, Matt. How are you guys?
00:16:30
Speaker 5: What's going on, Trevor? We're doing good, man. Except NC State fans, Trevor. They're still trying to figure out what the heck happened at the end of that game.
00:16:39
Speaker 1: Well, what did happen? I mean, did they play last week?
00:16:41
Speaker 3: I can't remember.
00:16:43
Speaker 5: Have you ever seen a game end in any, like, is there anything similar? You've watched a lot of football. What do you compare that to? Because that was crazy.
00:16:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, the only one that I can think of is the Michigan-Michigan State ending with the block punt touchdown, I don't know, 10, 15 years ago, something like that. That was crazy. But this one, I mean, block punts happen. This doesn't happen, right? And, I mean, of course, C.J.
00:17:12
Speaker 3: Bailey.
00:17:13
Speaker 1: He has had such a good career. He's such a good player, such a good guy, and this– I hope this isn't the last memory that people have of him. I hope NC State really roars to a tremendous season from here. But, you know, people break it down all the time. The truth of it is I still want to know more detail about what he was told. I know what Coach Doran said kind of briefly, that he was told to burn some time, take the safety, don't fumble it. Well, take the safety was the problem. You know, and then CJ said he's a competitor and he just wanted to compete. And it's like, well, does that mean he, what.
00:17:55
Speaker 3: Does that mean exactly?
00:17:57
Speaker 1: Right. Because even though he stayed up and took the hit, protecting the football was the prime directive. And, and the irony is if he would have just taken an immediate knee and left four seconds on the clock, then only one miracle play by Vanderbilt would have won them the game anyway, and that probably wouldn't have happened. And so there's just so many what-ifs here. My thought goes to the kid because he is way too good of a player and has contributed way too much to NC State and the ACC to have this be the memory.
00:18:34
Speaker 6: How much of a challenge is it going to be, Trevor, for Dave Doran to get his team to come back and respond after that? Do you think that they can galvanize themselves and use it as, hey, that was a low moment and go from there? Is that a type of loss where they can never recover from? How do you think it goes for the Pack from here on out?
00:18:53
Speaker 1: I think it depends on what happens because Appalachian State now, App State's 3-0 right now. They're a real opponent. They're not a cupcake. And we'll find out how they practice this week is what is going to be the key. And the problem, it's the same problem for LSU, by the way, in Texas A & M after deflating losses, different style of deflating loss. But can you be focused and energetic and have urgency in practice when you emotionally are so far down? And it's easier as a player to get blown out. just speaking specifically of NC State now, because if you just get blown out, hey, it's the other team's day, you don't like it, but you just put it behind you. But to have a game won and then to lose in this fashion, and then to have media and social media all over it like they have been, I mean, that's an incredible emotional deflation. Now, if they've lost App State, that is where I think the season's in danger.
00:19:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, it is a snowball.
00:19:54
Speaker 1: If they beat App State, they're good enough to be able to come out of it. But ultimately, you know, this is going to tell us everything about how resilient this team is. It kind of reminds me a few years ago, remember when Miami– had the game won, I think, against Georgia Tech, and they decided to run the ball to give the running back an extra little stat and ended up losing the game on a fumble because of that. And everybody just was down on Mario Cristobal. Well, he took a real national championship game last year, so Dave Doerr is a very good coach. The question is, can this week be a recovery week for them, or will it end up spiraling them?
00:20:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a great question. This is a huge game for them, no doubt about it. We're talking with Trevor Mattis from ESPN, talking some college football. Okay, so let's stick with the can they bounce back theme because South Carolina last week gets off to a 16-0 lead. against Mississippi State at home. The crowd's going crazy. And they then get outscored over the next 48 points. They score only seven of them. I mean, Mississippi State turned the game around. So Trevor, now they go to Alabama. Like, do you see them putting up a fight, having a chance to pull off an upset? Or do you worry about their mental state going into this game?
00:21:12
Speaker 1: Well, right now the coach is under fire, isn't he? And he's kind of being snippy with the media, which also creates its own little snowball, to use your word, of drama. But the problem with Alabama is that they can do everything Mississippi State can do except better. You know, the quarterback, Keelan Russell, is a mobile guy like Mississippi State's Camario Taylor, who's been a revelation, hasn't he, by the way? Yeah. But Russell at Alabama has been growing, not just as a runner, but as a passer. The offensive line is coming together. The defense is ferocious.
00:21:46
Speaker 7: And.
00:21:47
Speaker 1: You know, I mean, the South Carolina team is in danger of getting smashed in the mouth here. Losing at Alabama is by no means a season crusher for a team in the position of South Carolina. But losing at home to Mississippi State and then getting crushed by Alabama, it's the same thing. And so it comes back to, okay, so these are college students. They all make more than we do, a lot more than we do. So technically they're pros, I guess. But they're still college-age kids. And how will they respond mentally? Lou Holtz always used to say that you have a different team every week because you don't know which star you're relying on. His girlfriend made him mad that week, and he's thinking about her all week to practice. So, you know, this is going to be another game where the resilience emotionally of a team is going to dictate whether they have a chance or whether they just get smashed.
00:22:42
Speaker 6: Trevor, two years ago, Lenora Sellers at Clemson had a game for the ages where he dominated and was carrying and trucking Clemson defenders. And we thought, oh, my God, Sellers is a Heisman guy in the future. Then they go to the bowl game against Illinois, and he doesn't play that well. And it sort of goes into last year where you kept waiting for Sellers to have that jumping off point again, and he's not had it. How surprised are you that Sellers has never really become that star quarterback that we thought he was going to be a few years ago?
00:23:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, a few years ago, he had a real problem with offensive line. And he ran around like crazy. And that's where we saw his highlights. You know, running the ball on the scramble and then throwing on the scramble. And we thought, hey, give him an offensive line. He'll be great, right? Well, by now, the offensive line has been addressed. It's not a good offensive line. Yeah, they're not as utterly unfortunate as they have been in the past. And, you know, and he's not he's not seeming to take the next step. He still seems to force things. And that's the problem. He still has a lot of really great highlights. But then he threw a couple of picks, costly picks against Mississippi State. And it's the consistency that matters. Now, you can point that same finger at Arch Madden. This is not to say that Lenora Sellers is a bad player, but consistency has been his bugaboo, just like it has been for Arch. And, you know, if he's inconsistent against Alabama and turns it over against them, things will get out of hand very, very quickly. But you would think that after all the time he spent behind a leaky offensive line, that he would know how to play the position in that situation better than he's been showing so far this year.
00:24:26
Speaker 5: Trevor, I want to ask you about this SEC slate of games. It really is phenomenal. You start with Texas, Tennessee. We talked about Alabama, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Georgia. You've got Ole Miss, Florida. That might be the best. You've got LSU, Texas A & M. Both teams need that game. Which one of all this SEC slate do you feel like by Saturday night we'll be saying– That was the best one of them all. What game do you think is going to be the best of the group?
00:25:00
Speaker 1: I like Ole Miss and Florida. And, you know, Florida's coach said something to the effect of when he found out that they were favored by about a field goal, well, there's some good drugs out there. I thought that was pretty hilarious. You know, I don't want to quote it exactly there. I'm not, but it was just really funny. The thing is, this is another one of those emotional resilience weeks because of all the emotion and physical pull that, Ole Miss put in the beating LSU and the lead-up to LSU. But if there's any team in the nation that's accustomed to this, it's Ole Miss, right? I mean, they've got their quarterback back, the leader of their team is back. And from last year, when Lane Kiffin left at the end of November for LSU, they went on to win a couple of playoff games, and they ended up 18 seconds away against Miami from going to the national championship game. Miami scored the game-winning touchdown, from behind just in the last few seconds of the game. And so that emotional rollercoaster, Ole Miss handled brilliantly, right? And then, so now the question is, how do they handle this week of practice? Going to Florida, I can see why the Florida team has the– They had you in Las Vegas, right? They're favored. That's an incredibly physical game that Ole Miss played against LSU. I mean, I can't remember a more brutally physical game, especially in the first half ever. And so that'll take a toll. Juwan Lacy there running back is banged up for Ole Miss. And their defense, for as well as a play, especially in stifling the LSU comeback in the second half, They still rank near the bottom of the SEC in running defense and near the bottom of college football in running defense. And Florida, you know, we thought they were a really good running team with Jaden Baugh, you know, carrying the ball after they smoked, what, FAU and Campbell, something like that. But then they went to Auburn and did the same thing. So that basically legitimized what we thought about them. Great running attack against a suspect Ole Miss rush defense that is now fully beat up. So that game, to me, with the best quarterback in the nation, Trinidad Chambliss, is going to be a really interesting matchup.
00:27:27
Speaker 5: I think you picked the best one. I can't wait to watch that game and see how does Ole Miss bounce back emotionally. Do they still have it? And that Gator offense is fun, man. That's going to be a good one. It's also fun to watch Trevor Maddich in the ESPN studios on College Football Saturdays, including a great way to do your late night on Saturday or your Sunday morning. Record it like I do. Watch the college football final, guys, on Sunday morning. You can do it that way. Trevor, we always appreciate you, man. Thanks so much.
00:27:58
Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate you guys having me on. Thanks, Trevor.
00:28:00
Speaker 3: All right, be good. There you go. That is Trevor Maddich.
00:28:03
Speaker 5: I mean, that Florida Ole Miss game, Bo, might be like the national game of the weekend. I know there's eight ranked ones, so you all might say, oh, no, what about this game? But it's just I really think there's a– I see why Vegas did that with Florida. It just feels like a spot that will be hard for Ole Miss to be at their best.
00:28:22
Speaker 6: One of the heaviest bet teams, though, this week, I saw one of the gambling guys put out yesterday who's being bet on the most to cover or win. Ole Miss is getting a ton of money on their side for this, but I don't know about that.
00:28:34
Speaker 1: Really?
00:28:35
Speaker 5: So they're thinking that Vegas went too far in making Florida the favorite?
00:28:38
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:28:40
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:28:40
Speaker 3: Interesting, man.
00:28:41
Speaker 5: Let's see how good the Gators really are. And he's right about that Ole Miss run defense. Charlotte broke a couple of runs on that Ole Miss run defense.
00:28:49
Speaker 3: And obviously, Louisville and LSU ran a lot.
00:28:50
Speaker 6: I think Tennessee-Texas is fascinating, too, because that's a... That's a game where we don't really know what to feel about Tennessee yet. Is that a win where we go, oh, God, Tennessee's also a playoff team potentially, or does Texas put it on them and Tennessee's sort of middle of the pack?
00:29:07
Speaker 3: I don't know yet about them.
00:29:08
Speaker 6: This is the first real test for Tennessee to figure out who they are this year.
00:29:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, did you see the guy, I don't know who he roots for, calling out Georgia, saying Georgia finally plays a real team this weekend, Oklahoma going to give it to them. You mean to tell me this Oklahoma team, that could barely score on new Mexico where John Mateer threw two picks against new Mexico bone and needed help from the crowd noise to find a receiver downfield. They're gonna go into athens and be like.
00:29:37
Speaker 3: They could get shut out by this by georgia.
00:29:39
Speaker 5: I think they're gonna get mollywomped like i did where's is this kind of oklahoma fan or so why would you who in the world thinks oklahoma is still good man i feel like everybody has sold oklahoma.
00:29:48
Speaker 3: I don't know man.
00:29:50
Speaker 6: All right 84 of the money lines on old miss 85 of the spreads on old miss right now jeez yeah I'm telling you, man, it's three and a half now for the Gators. So, I don't know, man. I think there's a very good chance Florida wins the game. That's a tough game for Ole Miss to come back emotionally from.
00:30:10
Speaker 3: It is. Big time. Big time. All right, let's go to the birthday boy, baby.
00:30:14
Speaker 5: Fitty Marlowe joins us with a birthday edition of his flash.
00:30:19
Speaker 3: What do you got? That sounded weird, didn't it? What do you got over there, Fitty?
00:30:22
Speaker 6: It's all right.
00:30:23
Speaker 7: It's all right.
00:30:24
Speaker 6: A little hometown or a big old city Might as well share Might as well smile Life goes on for.
00:30:33
Speaker 3: A little while.
00:30:36
Speaker 2: Thank you, Mac.
00:30:37
Speaker 7: This update brought to you by our good friends at the H & S Roofing and Gutter Company. Guys, don't wait for a small problem to become a big one. If you see an issue with your roof or your gutters, give them a call. They'll give you a free estimate. That's what Papa Pags, Flounder's dad, did. They got their sign out there in front yard. They got their roof taken care of. That phone number to get that estimate, 704-334-9934.
00:31:00
Speaker 1: 704-334-9934.
00:31:04
Speaker 7: Three, three, four, nine, nine, three, four, seven, zero, four, three, three, four, nine, nine, three, four.
00:31:12
Speaker 3: Does he make fun? Does Papa Pax make Flounder sleep on the roof now? Not yet. Okay.
00:31:18
Speaker 7: Wait until hockey season gets underway. They're arguing about the Rangers. It could very well happen. One of my favorite things, Mac, about coaches are these guys that are eternal optimists like John Harbaugh. When he did confirm the news yesterday, that Jackson Dart, set to have surgery, will miss the remainder of the regular season, but hopes to have him back for the playoffs.
00:31:41
Speaker 3: I heard that one.
00:31:43
Speaker 5: One of the anchors on ESPN read a story that took it even further. It said he could return if they're in the Super Bowl. I'm like, Jameis is going to go to the Super Bowl. Captain Crab Leg is going to take him to the damn Super Bowl.
00:31:57
Speaker 3: Which year?
00:31:59
Speaker 5: Only way Jameis is going to the Super Bowl if he's working for ESPN and doing segments with the fans.
00:32:05
Speaker 7: Did you see the Jameis Winston comment about Crab Legs that he told the team?
00:32:09
Speaker 3: Was that real? Or is that AI?
00:32:14
Speaker 2: If I just got to cross over, I'm going to be really upset.
00:32:16
Speaker 3: I don't know.
00:32:17
Speaker 6: He's doing commercials for, was it Uber Eats and Crab Legs? I forget which one it was, but he's doing Crab Leg commercials.
00:32:22
Speaker 5: I feel like that would have gone mega viral on all the sites.
00:32:27
Speaker 3: We have to look that up.
00:32:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, he was using a Crab Leg analogy to describe what the Giants need to do to come together. And we need to figure out if that was real. I want it to be real so badly.
00:32:39
Speaker 3: I do.
00:32:40
Speaker 2: Shroppy said, dude, that was AI is bleep.
00:32:43
Speaker 3: That's what I thought.
00:32:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's AI.
00:32:44
Speaker 3: That's what I thought. Damn, is the Unk starting to figure out this AI game? Yeah, Wooderoy says, Fitty, on the tweet at the bottom, made with AI. I didn't look that far.
00:32:56
Speaker 5: It didn't take much to figure it out. Made with AI. Finney didn't get a new brain for his birthday, did he? Finney said, who's Al?
00:33:03
Speaker 7: Al?
00:33:03
Speaker 3: Who made with Al? Oh, that's AI. Okay.
00:33:07
Speaker 6: When we come back, we have one key guy added to IR and a bunch of others on the injury list. How much are we sweating the Panthers health news this morning? We'll give you the news and we react. Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ.
00:33:57
Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a pretty significant groin injury. And, you know, we got multiple opinions about what's the best course of action. And Jonathan's going to have surgery to repair the injury. And the timeline of return with surgical or non-surgical was going to be similar. And so they were able to get in there and get a bunch of imaging just in that whole area to kind of see what it's like. And everybody just put their heads together and agreed this would be the best course of action so we can get him back and get him rolling again.
00:34:27
Speaker 3: There you go.
00:34:27
Speaker 5: That is Dave Kanellis yesterday talking about the unfortunate news, and it broke during our show yesterday. We talked a bunch about it, but it goes in line with this whole conversation of how worried are you about any of these injuries? There were a fair amount of dudes on the injury report yesterday, and then you have this news of Jonathan Brooks that he's got to go on IR, and Kanellis said, hey, well, no more after the surgery. But it's looking at six to eight weeks. So I start with this one bone and then we'll deal with the ones that like Canales said, all the other ones on the injury list are kind of day to day. So it's this is obviously by far the most severe situation of this week. You had 24 hours to think about it. How worried are you at the impact of the Jonathan Brooks injury?
00:35:17
Speaker 3: I think A.J.
00:35:18
Speaker 6: Dillon can handle a lot of the role that Brooks was currently playing.
00:35:24
Speaker 3: I feel for Brooks. I hate it.
00:35:26
Speaker 6: I hate that they traded up for him. and he's not been able to perform really at all for any sustained period of time. But I think that Chuba looks good. They've got to clean up the offensive line and the penalties. But I think that Chuba and Dylan can handle that just fine. I hate it for Brooks himself, but it doesn't drastically change, Mac, how I feel about the offense right now. If Bryce wasn't dealing like he is and it was a more heavy run game situation, situation right now, I'd say, ooh, this isn't good. But if Bryce is going to continue to evolve as a passer, the two wideouts are on fire, then I think that Dillon and, well, Chuba and Dillon, I think will be just fine in the immediate.
00:36:06
Speaker 5: I do feel like that. I will say this, though. Chuba, stay healthy, please. Because Chuba looks like 2020. Don't let the total yards fool you. He has been efficient around four and a half yards a carry, and I'd be damned if it wasn't like 60 yards that he lost rushing last week. because of the penalties that that that has to be said i noticed bone he is a big fantasy pickup this week i noticed on a couple of the fantasy shows they're talking about that i think that's a smart move you said earlier you think he goes off against the browns run defense which has been bad by the way bryce has been like the most popular waiver wire pickup of the week as well Old Mac Jr.
00:36:45
Speaker 3: Was talking to me about it.
00:36:46
Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
00:36:46
Speaker 5: He's the type of kid, Bone, that is now in six fantasy leagues at the same time. How's he doing on that listener's league?
00:36:52
Speaker 3: It's absurd. He did the league for the guy. Team for the guy.
00:36:56
Speaker 5: Our guy still consults him on roster, on lineup decisions. The problem is, I think, and if he's out there, he could text us, the guy that Aiden, my son, drafted for and made $ 200 to do so. I think he's 0-2, though. I don't think Aiden left him with a great running back situation. Because you know what he said to me after the draft? Man, these unks, all they draft is running backs. I don't know why you draft these running backs in a PPR league, man. So I didn't get the top running backs, but whatever. So I don't know. We're going to have to monitor that. At some point, will the guy text in asking for a refund? From Mac Jr. I just wonder if Mac Jr. gets fired at some point from his consulting gig. Oh, man.
00:37:39
Speaker 1: Anyway.
00:37:40
Speaker 3: I mean, of course I'm not rooting for that.
00:37:41
Speaker 6: I mean, I'm curious to know if it happens or not.
00:37:44
Speaker 5: Hopefully he turns it around so Aiden does not feel the heat. But anyway, how do you keep track of six fantasy leagues? Hell, but there's dudes out there listening. There's like adults doing that with jobs and stuff.
00:37:56
Speaker 3: How do you do that? That's crazy.
00:37:57
Speaker 6: Some people have six teams for real of their own, not just fantasy teams.
00:38:02
Speaker 3: That's hard to keep up with. How do you do that, too?
00:38:04
Speaker 6: Sometimes teams get forgotten about along the way. Hello to the Giants. How many fantasy leagues you do fit?
00:38:11
Speaker 2: I'm in two.
00:38:12
Speaker 6: See, that seems more like it. I'm in zero now for the seventh straight year. Yeah, I got too old for that belief. Once they made betting legal over here in North Carolina. You prefer that avenue.
00:38:22
Speaker 3: You prefer that? I don't blame you on that. All right. Anyway, this dude says his buddy's in 19 leagues. How do y'all do that? Seminole Lloyds in eight leagues, and I love it.
00:38:32
Speaker 6: I know we kind of went off a little off task here, but then when you're in that many leagues, you end up rooting for stuff in one game, but you have a lot of crossover with players where you need this guy to do well in one game, but you might be playing against him in another game.
00:38:46
Speaker 5: There's a lot of stuff going on there with 19 Lloyds. Then what do you even root for? You got every player in the league. That's what I mean. So how do you know what the hell you're rooting for? Oh, my guy scored, but I'm playing against that guy.
00:38:57
Speaker 3: All right.
00:38:57
Speaker 5: Anyway, we're supposed to be freaking out about injuries. This segment got derailed, baby.
00:39:01
Speaker 3: I forgot.
00:39:02
Speaker 5: Or we're supposed to be not freaking out about injuries. Yeah, the Brooks thing with Chuba the runner the way he is, with Bryce playing the way he is, if that stuff continues, I think it's fine.
00:39:10
Speaker 3: And you're right about A.J. Dillon. I do think maybe it helps the running game. You know what I mean?
00:39:15
Speaker 5: Brooks was not exactly, and it is all his fault, taking off in the running game just yet.
00:39:19
Speaker 3: All right. What about these other?
00:39:21
Speaker 5: Now, the good injury news yesterday was that Bobby Brown and Pat Jones were full go. So if you get those two guys back, that's it's big for the defensive line.
00:39:32
Speaker 3: Jalen Coker limited with the ankle injury.
00:39:34
Speaker 5: You feel like I do about that one, like they're going to just kind of take it easy and then ramp him up.
00:39:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, they may do this a lot for a while. Until the bye, maybe?
00:39:44
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:39:44
Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Yeah.
00:39:46
Speaker 6: Last week was a little concerning at first, but the way he performed after that, I'm not worried about it. I think it's more just trying to make sure it doesn't get worse.
00:39:56
Speaker 3: During the week. I don't worry too much about that.
00:39:58
Speaker 5: And then maybe the bye, then maybe the ankle heals, and then they can get back to normal.
00:40:02
Speaker 3: The ones that I was worried about.
00:40:04
Speaker 5: And I will say this, some of y'all Panther fans jumped on Twitter and were like, dude, it's Wednesday injuries, man. Settle down. It was just a surprise of them. You're just not ready for them, and they're two stars. Devin Lloyd coming off his NFC Player of the Week, Defense Player of the Week performance, we found out he got a calf strain in the first half. So the first thing you think is, dude, look how good he looked in the second half. It didn't bother him. He himself said he's not very concerned about it. Jalen Phillips, though, had his back injury flare up. He has had, you know, some health stuff in the past. Do you worry about those at all? Is it too early in the week to worry? What do you think?
00:40:46
Speaker 6: I am not panicking, but I'm slightly concerned about a calf strain. Only because, Mac, I have some Yankees that pull their calves all the time.
00:40:55
Speaker 3: And I know how much it can come up again along the way.
00:40:58
Speaker 6: For example, Matt, Giancarlo Stanton pulled a calf, had a calf strain in April. He then tried to rehab it, and he pulled a calf again, trying to rehab it, and then he did it a third time. That's a little bit extreme, but I do worry about that specific injury seems to always linger a little bit. So I'm not going to panic about it, but I worry that that's something that never quite goes away for the season, right? Yeah, this dude says— And those things can also lead— we' ve seen with, like, Halliburton and stuff in basketball, like— You know, you play on one of those things. You got to be careful with that. Well, yeah, that could lead to an Achilles. So I don't worry that much. Not freaking out, but monitoring that a little bit. This texter says, are Panther fans on Twitter new here? Mac is going to get neurotic about every damn injury.
00:41:43
Speaker 3: Erotic?
00:41:45
Speaker 5: Neurotic.
00:41:45
Speaker 3: Oh, neurotic.
00:41:45
Speaker 6: Neurotic.
00:41:47
Speaker 5: I don't have some sort of football player injury fetish that turns me on. No, I'm going to get panicky and get.
00:41:53
Speaker 2: Worried about it.
00:41:54
Speaker 3: You said erotic. Neurotic. I do have that in me. I do worry.
00:41:59
Speaker 5: I do probably care too much. I will say it probably you got to see today. I think if they DNP today. It still doesn't mean a lot, but our final show of the week is tomorrow. I think I will be concerned if they're DNP. I'd like to see a progression to limited today for those boys. Again, I'm cool on Wednesday.
00:42:23
Speaker 6: I'm not freaking out, although I may have just freaked out a little bit in the last answer I gave.
00:42:28
Speaker 3: But no, Wednesday is a day of calmness. Today's not Wednesday, is it? No, today's Thursday.
00:42:34
Speaker 6: The injury report was on Wednesday. The report from Wednesday. I'm not freaking out over what happened on Wednesday. Thursday, it's eye-opening, and Friday, it's full-fledged panic. There you go.
00:42:46
Speaker 5: It's a good thing we're not the afternoon show, because when that Friday injury report comes in and I'm reacting to it, I probably would be freaking out.
00:42:53
Speaker 3: We have no chance without this guy. You know what I mean? It's probably good I'm not doing that show. Right. Yeah.
00:42:59
Speaker 6: When we come back in the Mac and Bone Show, Jones Angel of the Tar Heel Radio Network recaps the Clemson game and more on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ.
