Heat, Longevity, and the Science of Sweating

🎧 Forever Young: Heat, Longevity, and the Science of Sweating

Dr. John Layke & Dr. Payman Danielpour with Bill Gifford

This week on Forever Young, hosts Dr. John Layke and Dr. Payman Danielpour sit down with acclaimed science writer Bill Gifford to explore one of the most intriguing—and increasingly popular—tools in modern longevity science:

Heat therapy.

Bill joins the show to discuss his new book Hotwired, which dives deep into the history, biology, and emerging research behind practices like saunas, hot baths, and other forms of therapeutic heat exposure.

What was once considered simply a relaxing cultural tradition—particularly in countries like Finland and Japan—is now gaining serious attention from researchers studying cardiovascular health, metabolic function, and lifespan.

In this episode, the conversation explores how something as simple as sitting in a hot room and sweating may trigger powerful biological responses that support overall health and longevity.

The History of Heat TherapyBill explains how cultures around the world—from Finnish sauna traditions to Roman bathhouses—have long used heat for healing and social ritual.

Why Heat Is So Powerful for the BodyDr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour break down the physiological effects of heat exposure, including increased circulation, cardiovascular conditioning, and cellular stress responses that may promote resilience and repair.

The Longevity Research Behind SaunasThe group discusses the growing body of scientific research suggesting that regular sauna use may be associated with reduced risk of heart disease, improved metabolic health, and longer lifespan.

Heat vs. Cold TherapyHow do practices like sauna compare with the current trend of cold plunges and ice baths? The discussion explores how both stressors may benefit the body in different ways.

How Often Should You Use a Sauna?Practical guidance for people curious about incorporating heat therapy safely into their health routine.

The Future of Longevity ScienceBill shares why heat exposure may be one of the simplest—and most accessible—tools for improving long-term health.

Dr. John Layke and Dr. Payman Danielpour are Beverly Hills plastic surgeons and founders of Proactive Longevity, where they focus on cutting-edge strategies to help patients extend both healthspan and lifespan.

Bill Gifford is an award-winning science writer known for translating complex longevity and health research into engaging, accessible storytelling. His new book Hotwired explores the surprising science behind heat therapy and why it may play an important role in human health.
