AI can feel like magic for an ADHD brain and like gasoline for OCD. I’m Rachel, a licensed clinical social worker who lives and works at the intersection of ADHD and OCD, and I’ve noticed the same tool can either support real-life functioning or quietly turn into reassurance seeking. The difference isn’t whether you use AI. The difference is the job you’re asking AI to do.
• how AI can be an ADHD accommodation through scaffolding and structure
• breaking big tasks into smaller steps to support executive function
• using AI for time estimation to reduce time blindness and unrealistic scheduling
• lowering decision fatigue with meal planning and prioritizing
• when AI supports OCD recovery by reducing compulsive rewriting and checking
• the difference between drafting help and seeking certainty about tone or outcomes
• using “read once and send” as response prevention practice
• a practical test: values-based action versus escaping uncertainty

00:00:02.008 --> 00:00:04.458
Hi, and welcome to Dopamine and Doubt.
00:00:05.088 --> 00:00:11.467
I'm your host, Rachel, a licensed clinical social worker specializing in ADHD and OCD.
00:00:12.198 --> 00:00:21.838
On this show, I will be speaking from both my clinical and lived experience as we explore the surprisingly common crossover of ADHD and OCD.
00:00:22.638 --> 00:00:28.687
Because when we understand which is in the driver's seat, we are better able to know what we need in that moment.
00:00:29.498 --> 00:00:36.247
Whether you're living right at the intersection of both or navigate life with one of these neurotypes, you're welcome here.
00:00:37.037 --> 00:00:40.847
As always, please take what is helpful and leave what isn't.
00:00:41.607 --> 00:00:48.057
Neurodivergence shows up differently for everyone, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
00:00:48.567 --> 00:00:50.057
Okay, let's dive in.
00:00:53.246 --> 00:00:57.424
Personally, I use AI, and I've noticed something interesting.
00:00:58.145 --> 00:01:08.034
Sometimes it's one of the best ADHD accommodations I've found, and other times I can feel my OCD wanting to use it for reassurance-seeking.
00:01:08.674 --> 00:01:12.495
It's the same tool, but it has a completely different function.
00:01:13.314 --> 00:01:15.355
The tool itself isn't good or bad.
00:01:15.905 --> 00:01:18.674
It's what job I am asking AI to do.
00:01:19.444 --> 00:01:25.325
I do wanna also just name that I completely understand not everyone supports AI.
00:01:25.375 --> 00:01:28.575
I get the reasoning behind that.
00:01:28.614 --> 00:01:32.034
It's a very mixed tool in that way.
00:01:32.484 --> 00:01:36.754
And so I do understand the environmental impacts of it.
00:01:36.944 --> 00:01:49.594
I understand the job-related consequences of it, and so those are very real, and that is not what I'm going to discuss today.
00:01:50.584 --> 00:02:05.724
So looking at it from the ADHD, OCD lens, when AI helps my ADHD, I use it as scaffolding, so it can help me break down overwhelming tasks.
00:02:06.465 --> 00:02:11.844
It can help me break large projects into smaller steps that I can follow.
00:02:12.824 --> 00:02:16.715
A huge one I use it for is estimating how long something takes.
00:02:17.275 --> 00:02:29.844
I actually used it between clients the other day because I had an hour, and I was trying to convince myself that I could swim between clients, and it helped me realize the answer was no.
00:02:30.585 --> 00:02:34.414
And so I didn't, and I-- it made for a much better day.
00:02:35.414 --> 00:02:41.034
It helps me adjust my weekly schedule to add in those buffer times we've talked about before.
00:02:41.985 --> 00:02:55.724
And it has called me out, the time my time blindness was trying to do a perfect schedule and not account for daily life or anything going wrong.
00:02:56.215 --> 00:03:15.691
And so it, in the end, it saved me so much stress per day, because now I have a schedule that makes sense for when life happens and backup plans of what I'm gonna do if my little guy is sick or I need to cancel work for some reason that day.
00:03:16.661 --> 00:03:20.001
It helps with decision fatigue, and I use it for meal planning.
00:03:20.980 --> 00:03:29.651
It also can help me with prioritizing because I know many of my clients and I wanna do it all.
00:03:30.091 --> 00:03:33.781
When you have ADHD, it's hard to know what to do first.
00:03:33.830 --> 00:03:41.341
We or I, uh, typically will choose the thing I'm most interested in, which is not always the thing that needs to get done.
00:03:42.320 --> 00:03:54.681
It helps me brainstorm when I'm stuck, and sometimes I know what I wanna say, but I just can't always organize it, so it turns my scattered thoughts into an outline.
00:03:55.691 --> 00:03:59.211
AI in these moments for me is helping me move forward.
00:04:00.010 --> 00:04:02.751
AI can also support my OCD recovery.
00:04:03.341 --> 00:04:23.326
So there was a time when writing an email could take me far longer than it needed to It-- This was due to compulsions around wording, rereading it, checking tone, getting it exactly right, and also trying to guarantee nothing bad would happen.
00:04:24.716 --> 00:04:38.377
AI has actually helped me move through that process much more efficiently, but I've also had to learn to notice when I'm asking it to help me write an email versus asking it to make me feel certain about the email.
00:04:39.357 --> 00:04:43.766
Now I use AI, I read it once, and I send it.
00:04:44.706 --> 00:04:48.737
This helps serve as response prevention so that I can act.
00:04:49.637 --> 00:04:52.276
The key is what happens next.
00:04:53.206 --> 00:04:54.927
If I send it, that's a win.
00:04:55.836 --> 00:04:59.857
If I ask,"Can you tell me if this decision is the right one?
00:05:00.766 --> 00:05:02.726
Are you sure it doesn't sound rude?
00:05:03.536 --> 00:05:11.916
Oh, what if they misunderstand me?" Asking the same question five different ways, hoping for certainty that it will be okay.
00:05:12.896 --> 00:05:15.536
Now, AI is not helping me move forward.
00:05:16.036 --> 00:05:18.677
It's helping me stay stuck trying to become certain.
00:05:19.656 --> 00:05:20.966
So here's the framework.
00:05:21.706 --> 00:05:28.036
Is AI helping me to live my life or helping me escape uncertainty?
00:05:29.016 --> 00:05:38.057
Some examples of when it's helping me live my life, writing the email, planning for dinner, organizing my thoughts.
00:05:38.997 --> 00:05:50.786
When it's helping me avoid the feeling, trying to get certainty, removing any doubt, guaranteeing I am right, guaranteeing that nothing bad will happen.
00:05:51.646 --> 00:05:53.197
Ooh, that's a big one for me.
00:05:53.307 --> 00:05:57.107
I, I would love to prevent bad outcomes.
00:05:57.166 --> 00:05:57.656
Who wouldn't?
00:05:58.567 --> 00:06:01.987
Recovery is not avoiding helpful tools.
00:06:02.646 --> 00:06:07.266
Recovery is noticing when I am asking the tool to do something nothing can do.
00:06:08.247 --> 00:06:17.776
Unfortunately, no one can provide certainty, not Google, not your partner, not your therapist, and that's really hard to accept.
00:06:18.677 --> 00:06:29.574
Also, for my folks wondering if you're reassurance-seeking, when you ask Chat that question This goal is not to perfectly categorize every interaction.
00:06:30.415 --> 00:06:35.415
It's simply to become more aware of why you're reaching for the tool in the first place.
00:06:36.125 --> 00:06:49.175
It comes down to function and giving ourselves choice, which is something I'll continue to come back to,'cause the question is always the same one: What function is this serving?
00:06:50.175 --> 00:06:56.754
Is it helping me move toward my values or helping me move away from uncertainty?
00:06:57.795 --> 00:07:05.074
