00:00:00
Speaker 1: He's the best daddy in a tournament. Pro Don McDowell.
00:01:53
Speaker 2: This everything, and I brought some stuff to show today.
00:01:57
Speaker 3: Of some show and tell show until uh so until pop tards too.
00:02:03
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, uh so, yeah, we do gunsmith thing we do as far as that goes, cleanings, repairs, tune ups, Hunting seasons coming.
00:02:11
Speaker 3: Up, so it is it's a big deal.
00:02:13
Speaker 2: Yeah. So making sure your rifles are all sided in and ready to go.
00:02:16
Speaker 3: Well, hunting season, the first thing's gonna pop off is dove season. What do you recommend? And uh, tune up and deep cleaning for shotguns that kind of thing, you know, semi auto and uh uh.
00:02:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean these these things get run hard, they get taken out in the elements, so you know, getting it looked at, getting it torn down to make sure there's not you know, any kind of build up or anything that needs to come.
00:02:38
Speaker 3: It's called moon dust.
00:02:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, in Arizona, it's definitely. Oh yeah, so yeah, getting them in, getting them cleaned up, making sure everything's moving and functioning the way it should is a good idea so that we don't have any issues when you do go to pull the trigger on one of those animals that you're trying to get so yeah, not a bad thing.
00:02:58
Speaker 3: Well shot goes you know, kind of ignored.
00:03:01
Speaker 2: They do, because they tend to just run on their own. But I've had plenty of them stop running on me, and it usually happens at the worst time.
00:03:11
Speaker 3: Well, you know, I have a lot of faith in the pump action. Ye, but I've got a brand new Nova I've never fired up. I had it for several years and we had a theft, you know, going back heres ago and you know, twenty three guns went south. I got one back. They popped Julio with my AK forty seven yep, in a several of them parking lot. You know, it's okay. Yeah, so you know, I was grateful to get it back. But I mean, my my whole heritage as his child from my grandfather passed me down. You know, there was a parent match pair of pre sixty four model seventy thirty out six and a twenty two hornt that went south. There was a whole long ninety four octagon barrel thirty thirty. Yeah, you know, I literally I would kill them back. Yeah, they would not give me this gentleman's address.
00:04:11
Speaker 2: That's crazy. Yeah, Well, we've actually got a stock in the shop right now. That was a recovery from a theft. It was a beautiful stock, but when they stole it, they just treated it like garbage, of course, and so it was cracked through the wrist, has dents all over it, scratches all over it. So I'm in the process. I've already repaired the crack. Now I'm in the process of redeepening or deepening all the checkering so we can strip the old finish off, sand it down smith and refinish it for him.
00:04:41
Speaker 3: So that's a liberal love for somebody.
00:04:43
Speaker 4: It is.
00:04:44
Speaker 2: That's a long process to get through, yeah, just because, but it's it's also take your time to make sure it gets done right too.
00:04:53
Speaker 3: That's the thing, you know, going to a gunsmith. Here what I found and I'm not going to name names, I'll tell you what it rhymes with, but you know, it just seems that you know, once they get your weapon, they don't give it a crap about the schedule. Yeah, you know, yeah, they think they're like attorneys. Well we'll get to it. You know, it's taking a long day. You know, I have to go poop and do you know, come on, stop it fix it yep.
00:05:21
Speaker 2: So we prioritize our work based on how long it should take. Is kind of what we look at. If it's a project like that one that's going to take time, you know, we explain to the customer up front, you know, hey, this is a long process of getting everything done the right way. But something like a tune up that shouldn't take very long. We usually try to get that stuff turned back around in like a week or less.
00:05:44
Speaker 3: Okay, what's involved in a tune up? You're going to do a deep clean? What else you do?
00:05:49
Speaker 2: Pretty much, just tear it apart, look at all you know, the components, the springs, make sure there's no carbon build up or moondust build up anywhere, Clean everything up a little bit the way it should be, put it back together. We'll do a function check. We do have a test fire tank, so we can also test fire if we need you, just to make one hundred percent sure that everything's working the way it's supposed to.
00:06:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, Logan said that test fire range was out behind the dump store.
00:06:12
Speaker 2: It's actually pretty close to the dump sell.
00:06:16
Speaker 3: Oh that one a will pick up truck. I'm sorry, Yeah, pretty crazy.
00:06:22
Speaker 2: So yeah, but outside of the gunsmithing stuff we do. I do machining as well, so I did bring an example of that with me. We do sarah cot. We make custom holsters. What else what am I forgetting?
00:06:36
Speaker 3: Let me ask you on sarah cot what is the time frame and describe your process?
00:06:44
Speaker 2: Okay?
00:06:44
Speaker 5: Uh?
00:06:45
Speaker 2: So sarah Cot is definitely a process because the application of sarah Coat is a mechanical bond of the paint to the metal. So it's not just getting the part and then spray and paint on it and it's done. We have to completely disassemble everything. I mean, sites come off, every single part comes out, and then the parts that are getting painted get degreased. They have to sit in a decrease tank for some time to make sure all that grease gets pulled out. Then it goes to sand blast. We have to sand blast it down. That's where the mechanical bond for the paint is made, because it's.
00:07:22
Speaker 3: What do you use for your blasting.
00:07:25
Speaker 2: We use either red garnet sand or aluminum oxide because with sarah COO you can't use beads because you actually have to etch the surface so the paint has something to grab onto to make that mechanical so we sand blast it and then everything goes into an oven where we heat it up to try to push any oils out that may be still in components, or even just seed it in the middle somewhere or even in the plastic somewhere. After that comes out good, then it's ready to paint. Paint it, and depending on the.
00:08:00
Speaker 3: You say painted, I think rostolium.
00:08:03
Speaker 2: I mean I use a high pressure, low volume paint gun to apply it.
00:08:08
Speaker 3: But oh okay, but I mean Sarah secum Yeah, uh yeah.
00:08:15
Speaker 2: It's so there's multiple types of Sarah cot Uh. So H series is a two part so we have to mix the paint and it gets put on, then it gets baked in the oven to cure. And then there's the C series, which is it already comes pre mixed and we paint that on. But it's an air curious it takes like five days to fully harden.
00:08:35
Speaker 3: Wow.
00:08:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, but H series is good rated wise up to about five hundred degrees. So for a lot of none.
00:08:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's about what it is down at polkaon Arrow, about about five hundred degrees or south of He'll be yeah, yeah, I'm serious. Yeah, it'd be one and one hundred and twenty down there, no problem.
00:08:57
Speaker 2: I don't know what it is with this summer. It seems like it's better that's been before.
00:09:01
Speaker 3: We're going to make a tie in with the yellow tail in the Monsoon's. Yeah, you know, I've been tracking that pretty hard. Okay, yeah, you know. I did get a gift of a new twenty six farm farmers all in that, but it didn't have anything in there about the fish. Oh yeah, yep.
00:09:23
Speaker 2: So so yeah, So Sarah Coat's a really good finish though. It holds up really well for the higher tempt stuff the C series, so like barrels and things like that. The C series is great because it's rated up to eighteen hundred degrees.
00:09:36
Speaker 3: What's the rockwell hardness?
00:09:39
Speaker 2: I'd have to look. I want to say that each color has a different hardness just because the pigments that are in it kind of help with how hard it is. So, but each each color has its own rating, and that's that's kind of the cool part with Sarah Coat. You can do patterns and all kinds of stuff with it. So yeah, we've done in many one camos and and just different you know, all kinds of different patterns.
00:10:07
Speaker 3: So well, I've seen some pretty creative saracoats with patterns different colors, and yeah, you know that seems like that'd be a real pain. It is.
00:10:17
Speaker 2: It's because for me as an applicator, I look at it. Every different color means a different layer of course, so that means there's stencils down and another layer, and everything's got to get gone in the oven.
00:10:32
Speaker 3: To get tacked out.
00:10:32
Speaker 2: So you can actually put the stencils over the paint, but you have to leave it where it's not cured enough where it'll bond to itself, because if you overcure it, then it won't bond.
00:10:41
Speaker 3: And then you so you're I'm not going to ask you. I'll ask you guys. Is he good enough to put flames on my pistol?
00:10:51
Speaker 6: Yeah?
00:10:52
Speaker 3: Definitely? That nice? Yea, No, that's it. That's a give away. Yeah. And then one of our listeners wants to know if you can Sarah Coota's goalie mask. Uh yeah, yeah, hockey player.
00:11:08
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:11:09
Speaker 2: Uh so plastics can get done to you. The only the only difference with plastics versus metals is they go into the even at a lower attempts. They don't melt, So.
00:11:19
Speaker 3: That wow, okay, part of this. Uh, we're going to try to get Captain Chemo on the on the line with Big Daddy Don Burns. He's doing some stuff down there. Now are you interacting with these two guys? Yeah? Absolutely? Is there chaos no matter what?
00:11:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, it seems like it. There's a lot going on.
00:11:44
Speaker 3: Well we called Cable Captain chaos for a reason. Oh yeah, absolutely, yeah, and Burns. Nothing grows where Burns goes. I mean, unbelievable. Yeah, they're they're getting into you know, they've got uh uh Coca Cola and Hue Armour doing some stuff. Well we'll get an update on that once we get them on the phone. But now, how do you guys interact with ownership as far as yeah, what what what do you do? You got your own chair, you got your own office, you got run on the shop. No.
00:12:21
Speaker 7: Usually I just walk in and I walked to the back and I go, hey, Mike, how's it going?
00:12:26
Speaker 3: And then that's good interaction.
00:12:28
Speaker 7: I get some marching orders for the day of like what all needs to get done or what I need to work on, and then I just kind of get to it and then we're just kind of hanging out in the back working on stuff, talking about what happens.
00:12:39
Speaker 3: Okay, I like.
00:12:40
Speaker 2: It, teaching you guys how to do more stuff.
00:12:42
Speaker 3: More stuff. Do you ever hear yo what's up? Yeah?
00:12:47
Speaker 2: Usually it comes from the logan.
00:12:48
Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm the one that walks in just kind of, hey, how's it going everybody? You know, what's up? But I'll do the same thing like Nate. I'll walk into the back. I've got a toolbox in the back, so I go put my stuff back there, and I take a look at work, order schedule for the day, see what's going on, and anything I can jump on right away. Sometimes it's you know, a thousand different holsters or a couple of different coat projects we're.
00:13:10
Speaker 3: Gonna talk about. Tell me about that hat? Did you find that or did you pick that up over in Afghanistan?
00:13:18
Speaker 8: No, this one actually I got at the VA hospital after I got back.
00:13:22
Speaker 6: I've been I've been out for about ten years now.
00:13:24
Speaker 3: So never goes away, does it never goes away? God love you? Thank you for your service anyway, any service in your background. No, sir, I'm the odd man out of the shop.
00:13:37
Speaker 7: I'm one of the two maybe three people that in the military.
00:13:43
Speaker 3: It's coming back. Yeah, So you'll get a turn.
00:13:49
Speaker 2: He's a doctor though he doesn't really need he doesn't need the military.
00:13:53
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's good stuff. So okay, Uh, I just sometimes I have voices in my head those times that hi keybos on the light, Keemo, what's happening?
00:14:09
Speaker 5: Hello?
00:14:09
Speaker 3: Don how are you I am? You know, over the last twenty four hours, I've saym baged my house. I've got plywood on the windows, and uh I'm ruddy for wala how about yourself?
00:14:25
Speaker 9: You know, I've been tracking while majority of the night finishing working up on a project for some investors, for a wonderful project that I'm trying to.
00:14:38
Speaker 5: Do in Hawaii.
00:14:40
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:14:40
Speaker 9: You know, it's not easy trying to come up with seven point six million dollars for a project.
00:14:45
Speaker 3: Right, yeah, perfect. This sounds like a big sale coming up.
00:14:50
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:14:51
Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a big it's a big, big sale. But sitting here listening to you and Mike past couple of minutes, and.
00:14:58
Speaker 5: I got a question.
00:14:59
Speaker 9: You guys are talking about Arizona moon dust. Is that equivalent to California lid card dust?
00:15:06
Speaker 3: You know, it's probably about the same thing. Yeah, there's different colors.
00:15:12
Speaker 9: Okay, Yeah, different colors.
00:15:15
Speaker 4: There you go, There you go.
00:15:16
Speaker 9: But yeah, I was just laughing at that, I guess talking about it. But how's it going?
00:15:23
Speaker 3: Mike good came out? You been.
00:15:26
Speaker 9: No me, uh, never doing a thing, sitting on my back in.
00:15:33
Speaker 3: Well, can you give us a clue, just kind of give us some minor update on what's happening with whoy Armory Caloca Cola.
00:15:43
Speaker 9: Yeah, so who who he just finishing up with? I was talking to Mike about this the other day. Won't go into details, but you know, he's supposed to be helpful to us, but you know, a little difficult. Hopefully we'll get who he Armory squared away. We you've got quite a few projects that I gotta get gone with Louis Armory, hoping to have it up and running, but no later than end of September October. But you know we've still got IDF on the couple other operators. Yeah, boy, not operators.
00:16:18
Speaker 3: Okay, I want to ask you to hang with us. We've got a flip into a break here at Fox Sports nine ten and it's ninety nine point nine FM HD two.
00:16:30
Speaker 10: We'll be right back equals two gun nuts. The Coconut guys from the Huey Armory, Captain keem Okay and Master Sergeant Big Daddy Burns. Let's get into it from the range to the workshop to real world experience. We're talking rifles, gear, the outdoors and everything in between. No fluff, no filter, just real conversations from guys who live it every day. Whether you're behind the rifle, in the fire or just trying to learn from those who've been there, You're in the right place. Eight oh eight Coffee and Command, Grab a cup, lock in and let's go.
00:17:16
Speaker 3: All right, we're back if you just joined us. We have Mike ownership from Fenrick Gunnworks at six twenty nineties Channel Boulevard and he brought the backbone of the companies. Well, we've got Logan and Nate in here. They're their armors and make things happen down there. And then we've got Captain Chaos on the phone, Captain Chemo from Coffee and Command, knocka cole, and Holy Armory. So talk about holsters. So we do. Man, I'm gonna take this up. I'm gonna hold it right in front of the camera so you can see. So, uh yeah, show and tell.
00:18:02
Speaker 2: So we make custom holsters.
00:18:05
Speaker 5: And uh.
00:18:07
Speaker 2: Last time I was here, I noticed that Don didn't have a holster.
00:18:09
Speaker 3: And uh, so I back pocket.
00:18:12
Speaker 2: I mean it works, but safety wise, you know, he'd be better to have a holster.
00:18:17
Speaker 3: I had a safety incident yesterday because I stuck my hand in my back pocket. Oh my god, there's a quite big hole. I guess what was sticking out of the hole the barrel muzzle.
00:18:26
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah.
00:18:27
Speaker 2: So so, yeah, we make holsters, and I noticed that he didn't have one, so I decided to make you one.
00:18:33
Speaker 3: Uh, thank you so much.
00:18:34
Speaker 2: So, but that that particular holster is made of point nine to three kaydakx Uh. Normally I'll do point eight, but you seem like a guy that probably is hard on your pistol, so I did a little thicker material for you, so it'll last little longer. But it's black, has a high sweat guard. It can be carried inside or outside. I used our laser engraver to engrave your logo on it, and then the belt attachment has our logo engraved on as well. But we make those. That's probably one of the most common things that we get in the shop as holsters.
00:19:08
Speaker 3: That's important.
00:19:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So we make a ton of holsters and our turnaround time on them. We've we've always been pretty strict. Depending on how many we have, we usually try to get them back to the customer within a week because if we do need to keep the gun, because I do have certain mold guns, but if I don't have that mold, I need to hold onto the firearm. And the logic behind that is is that's probably that person's daily carry and if I have it too long, they don't have their firearm with them. So I want to be able to get that holster turned around and back to them as fast as possible so that way they're not disarmed for very long.
00:19:48
Speaker 3: So okay, well we've got Keemo on the line. How are you guys interacting with the logistics issue? You're here, he's there, so what are we doing?
00:20:03
Speaker 2: Well, that's that's uh.
00:20:04
Speaker 3: Well, go ahead.
00:20:06
Speaker 9: Well, logistically wise, we haven't really done anything yet, but I don't really see there being any issues. If I got lowers or lowers that need to be Sarah Codd stuff I need done, or complete uppers, it's more or less just having my do what he needs to do. He's really good at it, or I just get him shipped out to him. But we we uh, we've never had issues with deadlines of building custom rifles. That's why when you go to the four oh six website or soon the whoy that there's lead times when you when you go to the website and you build your rifle. Let's use four oh six for example, it's literally a drop down on how to build your rifle, but before it allows you to check out and purchase your rifle that you have to click the agreements that the lead times are eight to fifteen weeks. That way, there's no issues of hey, where's my rifle? War, you know, getting that weekly call, what's going on with you know, bitching and belly. I can expind him because I've seen that happen too much, and that's the reason why we've designed our website the way we did to alleviate that. So when I send something expedited to Mike or or don it's their quick fast in a hurry, and I know they're going to do whatever they can to get it, get it done and get out. But you know, one of my biggest complaints about Mike so far, and I love Mike dearly, and I won't here we go you know, here we go with the chaos. You know, you know army, I know how these guys are. But let's talk about hosts. There's a couple of differences between your holster and mind. So I'm sure yours is in the ways band out of ways, band design. Mine wasn't. I paid for mine. You did have to pick on Mike on that one. Here we go, and I didn't.
00:22:08
Speaker 3: You know what he what he's not remembering is I have adult button?
00:22:14
Speaker 6: Yeah?
00:22:15
Speaker 9: Yeah, I got a lot of buttons too.
00:22:19
Speaker 2: And that just means that I got to make you more holsters because when you when you came in, you needed a rushed holster and I just got it done for you in.
00:22:26
Speaker 3: Like a day.
00:22:27
Speaker 9: Yeah, I just have to pick on you, bro, That's how it goes.
00:22:32
Speaker 1: But the hoster that he.
00:22:34
Speaker 9: Made me, we well, we brought in when we were at the show. It's been an amazing holster. It's held up no issues. I've I've dropped it. I've dropped it. Uh you know, getting at of big objects that fly. It does amazing, no cracks, no nothing. I have zero complaints about that holster. Well not zero, but you but yeah, but but yeah, as far as projects, Don. Since we're you know, on the phone, we're talking about projects. So for UH Seppo and I'll let you explain SEPO to to Mike off the air. I have some lowers nine millimeters and some ar fifteen lowers going to Don. I'm sorry, Don Burns. I'm gonna have him ship I think three of them, the nine millimeter lowers UH to Mike that I wanted Sarah coated in UH olive green, and then we're gonna get three uppers from Spike's tactical the nine millimeter with the gonzo can that has the training. You know, it's what I'm talking about.
00:23:52
Speaker 3: Mike.
00:23:53
Speaker 9: Yeah, Yeah, we need to get three of those. They just need to be all of olive green whatever. I'll let you pick it. So I've just got to be a green and we've got to build these for SEPO. But I'd like to try to get these done in the next three months. That'll be Mike's first project. And then a second project is is UH doing some fancy work on a new gun he got me that I'm super excited to get. Yep, soon.
00:24:26
Speaker 3: We'll be.
00:24:33
Speaker 9: Outside of that.
00:24:34
Speaker 3: Don.
00:24:34
Speaker 9: That's gonna be the first project for Mike. But there's gonna be a lot of projects to come. And given who he Aremory is just gonna be right there. And is it Somerton, Arizona, a Ka, Tucson, A lot of stuff back and forth between the two shops to just be fine. And I'm hoping you know, there's this empty space next to Mike's shop, don And we haven't talked about this, but Mike the project we've talked about atf concept. I'm really pushing on that and as a matter of fact, the investors that I'm working on a project. So here we'll talk about this project real quick. I'll just give a little bit of detail.
00:25:19
Speaker 3: So you ready.
00:25:22
Speaker 9: So Pinaka co of Firearms is still in the process the websites up, we're finishing up the location of the building, not finishing up the location, but the locations there start the process of putting the connect on the property to get the company fully up and running because we do have some projects that are brought to us from State of Hawaii and a couple other things to get going on it. This started out as a joke and it rapidly changed into not being a joke. So we have Kanaka CoA Farms and we are officially starting and I don't know exactly, but this is why I'm just sharing. It's not for sure Kanaka CoA Airways and what that means is essential air service in Hawaii, which is funded by the government. There's not a lot of Inner Island companies that have aircraft that fly back and forth to take people to doctor visits, work that, YadA, YadA, YadA. And the government has two programs, Essential air Service and this other one has this long identifier that I can't even remember. But anyways, they give grants for up to twelve million for this project and it hasn't been done in I think six years. But anyways, one of the investors that I fly for owns airplanes considering starting a one to thirty five certificate. So I just finished doing my proposal and it's actually being submitted to them on Monday Tuesday to see if we can get this project going because the funding there, the needs there, the resources there. I know these guys, they're amazing investors. My buddy Adam Evans, I've known him for a long time. We've flag quite a bit together, so it's kind of his and mind project and we just kind of named it after Kannakakoa Armory call it Kanakakoa Airways. But hopefully it'll be a go, and I'll go back home and do some research and finish up some stuff for this project. But this could be up and run, and you know, if it's officially a go six to twelve months bringing Inner Island service to locals in Hawaii, it'd be a great project because you know, there's not too many aviation owned companies back home in Hawaii, so this would really go well, and it'd served a lot of the community leaders there. It would do some really just get support for for the people back home. So yeah, so that's the project.
00:28:15
Speaker 3: All right. Hold, I thought we're gonna flip into a breaker yesterday. I can tell you he signed me up as a door gunner. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, Well, let'll be fine.
00:28:23
Speaker 2: I didn't get that offer out of ORB.
00:28:26
Speaker 3: All right, We'll be right here with more chaos with these guys like Box Sports. We're visiting with Captain Kimo. We got Mike Logan and Nate and I'm gonna switch right back over to Mike. Mike, Uh, what's all the goodies right in frontio?
00:28:45
Speaker 2: So I brought some some of the stuff to show with other things that we do in the shop. So I do have some machine machines mill in the lathe. My mill is manual, but I can still do things like optic cuts. So I'm this sig P three twenty slide that I cut the plate for the optic and then drilled and tap the screws. There are recoil lugs in there, but even running on a manual mill, I was able to round the front faces of the pocket. Uh So the optic is actually supported by the slide as well, not just the screws. So, and then this slide, we used our fiber laser to cut a port through the slide and then three ports into the barrel. Doing that helps mitigate recoil so you don't get as much flip when you shoot. It's a pretty small gun, so it was really snappy. So the customer a nine milimeter but so cut the ports in the slide and the barrel, showed it on the camera and then we resra coated the slide. Afterwards, we resro coated the entire gun afterwards.
00:29:56
Speaker 3: Does a great job, yep.
00:30:00
Speaker 2: So, and then I got a buffer tube that we did about a year ago. But and it's a it's actually Nate's buffer tube. But I mean it's holding up good from moving the stock in and out. It's got a little bit of wear, which is pretty common still, but about a year of use, just repainted at black. You can see the backside of the castle nut was red. Uh, the entire buffer tube was red originally.
00:30:27
Speaker 7: So when I got the rifle that this came off of, it was red and black. And the funny part about that is the guy who the guy did his own kind of paint job on it with restolium. Uh No, it was actually uh he used high temp engine enamel choice and I sold him the can of paint that he used.
00:30:56
Speaker 3: No, he did it glossy. It was pretty bad.
00:31:00
Speaker 7: Didn't come out all that great. And I had the rifle for a good while. And then when I started working at the shop, I wanted to learn about the Sarah coding process and everything, and so I was like, hey, I got these parts that need to not be this color. Can you show me how to change that? And so we went through into the whole Sarah code on quite a few pieces. I just happened to pull the buffer tube off stuff.
00:31:22
Speaker 3: I'm telling you, Oh yeah, we do.
00:31:24
Speaker 2: It's it's it's entertaining, which kind of leads me to the next part. So even on Nate's buffer or buffer tube, I'm sorry, you can see the gouging in the threads. That was my right after I Sarah co did it. He was putting it together and you needed to back the buffer tube off. I think it was for because you had to put the spring in for the rear takedown pin. And when he went to back it off, I heard it and I was like, oh, you didn't back the latch played off, did you? And he's like nope.
00:31:55
Speaker 7: And they have gotten a little excited, you know, working on guns and everything. This is pretty early on in the shop, and I made an oops.
00:32:03
Speaker 2: So it happens, I mean, And I think that the point with that too is like even for us, we we sometimes make mistakes. We get into a rush because we want to get something, do you know, But I mean, it happens. We all make mistakes, of course, and it's just again, slow down, pay attention to what you're doing, and you know, everything go well. And and that's another probably the most common thing we get in the shop is screws. People will mount optics and they will either over torque screws or use red lock tight instead of blue, and then they go to take it off and they can't get the screw out and they strip it out and then they bring it to us and then we have to drill into.
00:32:51
Speaker 3: Pray and spray.
00:32:52
Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, so yeah, we got to drill them out and pull the screws.
00:32:56
Speaker 3: Out there and it's wrong wrong.
00:33:00
Speaker 2: So yeah, wronglock tight or wrong torque specs. So these screws, yeah, are are not that big? Eighteen to twenty inch pounds all they need and blue lock tight so it can come back off.
00:33:13
Speaker 3: The only ripe I have with my AK forty seven. You shoot before I started goofing with it. You shoot it long enough all the screws come out like what yeah, stuff ball off. Yeah.
00:33:27
Speaker 2: Well so actually I did bring some Akamo to talk about. We had that happen recently in the shop too, So customer had.
00:33:35
Speaker 3: Is this a good thing? Uh?
00:33:39
Speaker 2: It's it's it's talking about specs of Ammo, really is what we're gonna tell?
00:33:42
Speaker 3: Okay? Okay, So, so customer, did you're not going to pick on the ak Oh no, no, No, the AK itself is great. I love it. I told you.
00:33:52
Speaker 2: So when the customer had got a brand new rifle, bought a bunch of AMMO, went out to go shoot it, and he had some steelcase AMMO and some brass case AMO and shot through all the steelcase, no issues. Went to load the first round of the brass case and the bolt wouldn't close, so he went to manually pull the bolt back. When he pulled the bolt back, just the cartridge came out, the projectile was stuck in the barrel.
00:34:18
Speaker 3: Oops, So that could have been fatal right there. Yeah, So he.
00:34:24
Speaker 2: Ran the projectile out, went to load another round, same thing happened, and he's like, all right, something's up with this. So he brought it into us started looking at it, and I was looking at the SAMI specs, which are the specs laid out by how the AMMO is supposed to be built. Every single angle and measurement is laid out with windows, So seven six two by thirty nine, the overall link of the cartridge and projectile by SAMI spec is anywhere between two point one five zero and two point two in, so it's a pretty big window. But with the steelcase demo, I measured it and it measured out at two point one five three, pretty consistent. The brass case AMO measured out in one box of fifty I measured like five rounds and it had a window of two point one eight to two point one nine three. I think it was so pretty big spread when you're talking thousands of an inch and a throw it on a chamber. So essentially what was happening was these rounds weren't seated far enough into the case. And if you look at them, you can see the neuraling around this projectile, yet not on this one because it's seated farther in.
00:35:42
Speaker 3: No, was that standard production off the shelf.
00:35:45
Speaker 2: Yep so, And on the rounds that came out of the barrel you can actually see the lands and grooves cut into the jacket where it was getting stuck. So I didn't want to name any names, and I won't because is the manufacturer of I don't even. I don't even I can't even think of anything that would write with it. But they they have reached out, well they've reached out to me, and they're working with us on on resolving the issue. So okay, so if it is a production thing or a lot thing, hopefully we'll get some answer.
00:36:20
Speaker 3: That could be pretty uh yeah, that's just yep.
00:36:25
Speaker 2: So so yeah, I brought those kind of show those and then uh, the last one I got is with AMMO as well. Inspect your AMMO because if you're chambering around every single day, every time that round goes into the chamber, the round seats farther and farther just by a little bit. But after you know a few hundred times.
00:36:49
Speaker 3: On the marls uh handloads roads.
00:36:54
Speaker 2: So yeah, you end up with around looking like that after a while, and it turns into a safety issue where that round is seated so far into the case that it's either going to over pressurize trying to get out through the barrel or it's gonna turn into a squib because it's not gonna have enough velocity.
00:37:14
Speaker 3: To be Yeah, you know the the last part is not not a big deal. Well, what happens when it overpressurizes.
00:37:21
Speaker 2: That's where if if it overpressurizes enough, you could blow the barrel apart, blow the slide apart, essentially destroy the gun, and potentially it hurt yourself because parts go flying, wow and things like that. So same with a squibload. If it doesn't get out in the barrel. Now you have a barrel obstruction and the next round comes in behind it.
00:37:42
Speaker 3: And yeah, that's the thing. You don't know what you don't know, and you don't know what's in that barrel exactly. Yeap.
00:37:48
Speaker 2: And most of the time squibloads you can hear them because most of the time they're just under under powdered rounds, so it's just kind of a pop instead of a crack. But with a round like this, you're gonna get the normal sound. You just won't know what turned into a squid.
00:38:03
Speaker 3: That's crazy.
00:38:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, So inspect your AMMO. That's that's the key to today.
00:38:10
Speaker 3: That's uh, that's good advice. Yeah. Absolutely, I haven't had any problem with off the shelves stuff, but I've had a few issues with I don't want to pick on Marl. He passed away and but you know, he did a good job, but sometimes things weren't sized correctly.
00:38:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean I've I've I've dabbled, I could say in reloading and loading AMMO. Is is not that easy. You got to really pay attention.
00:38:37
Speaker 3: It's a science. Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, Yeah, I used to do shotgun shelves, but that's you know, then we did some forty four bags. But yeah, that was back when I was really stupid seeing how much powder you could get in a forty four bag. Yeah, not blow the hammer back in your face? Right, Yeah, yeah, bad, not a good idea. Yeah, all right, we got to flip into another Keemo, are you awake?
00:39:04
Speaker 4: I'm awake.
00:39:05
Speaker 9: I'm here, I'm listening.
00:39:06
Speaker 3: All okay, okay, all right. I know what he's doing is ham and pineapple. That's what he's doing. We'll be right back with more coffee command and finery gun works. We'll be right back, Mike. I I want to ask a question. We've got about seven minutes to uh in this segment in UH, but very quickly, how do you treat a stock change getting away from factory stock to one of my favorites. I've got several BOYD stocks, Yeah, hardwood stock. But you know, when you're you're putting the action in there? Walk us through the betting process. What do you do? Do you rampant lap at you? What's happening?
00:39:55
Speaker 2: There's a lot so a lot of times.
00:39:58
Speaker 3: He asked us, would you trust logan to do? No?
00:40:01
Speaker 2: No, no, uh so so a lot of times with the just starting out the process, it's figuring out what's contacting. So I'll use like transferred eye on the action and set everything in to figure out, okay, what needs to be removed, so this thing seats all the way down where it needs to be. And then once they get to that point, it's looking at okay, bedding the action, getting the locking lug locked in and all that kind of stuff, so nothing's moving as far as the action goes, but keeping the barrel floated. So uh, if if the barrel's contacting with the stock, then we're gonna start running through the barrel channel to make sure that that's all clear, because we want the barrel to whip and do what it needs to do and and resettle back in the same spot every time. So of course, and then at that point, ye, it's start putting in rock bed into the action, clamp everything in and let it cure. And is this a posy two part base. Yeah, there's there's several ones out there. There's there's acroglass. The problem I have with traditional acroglasses it's really runny. If you to thicken it up, you're basically putting in fiberglass fibers into it to try to make it thicker, but it still just runs like crazy. So Acroglass did come out with a gel which doesn't run near as much and works a lot better. And then like I said, there's there's I think it's called rock bed or bedrock or something, but there's several other other thicker compounds that you can.
00:41:31
Speaker 3: Oh you're slipping back into bedrock. That was.
00:41:37
Speaker 2: But yeah, so I get all that in there, lay the action in, clamp all the action screws, or use stock making screws to torque everything to specs. That way, the action is completely uh sitting on a bed of hard materials, so that way it will not flex or move and and give you better accuracy. So and then outside of that, it's it's usually kind of getting with the customer and fitting the stock because everybody's built different. So to link the pool from.
00:42:06
Speaker 3: You know, that's kind of my next question for both you and Chemo in your armors over here. I come in and I want you to build me a rifle. Yeah, are you going to go through the same thing I go through to have a custom fishing rod built. We gotta look at length for the pole and.
00:42:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, yeah, yeah, typically I mean and and ars can be a little different because they have the adjustable stock and you can kind of set your link the pool where you want. But if it's a bolt action or shotgun or it's pretty pretty well fixed, yeah, yeah, everything's pretty solid. So you got to start measuring and figuring out the link, the pool, the comb height and all that kind of stuff.
00:42:45
Speaker 3: You know that that right there is one of my pet peeves. And that's one of the reasons I went to boyd because they've got an adjustable peak or cheek qust and adjustable link the pool pads, yeah, reoil pads. Yeah, so I got the one I've got. You got these little sissy springs on it.
00:43:09
Speaker 2: So I actually will do I'll use kaydeks and make cheek risers that are adjustable for fixed stock rifles.
00:43:17
Speaker 3: Nice. So how about you, Chemo, how are you treating custom uh rifles to fit the individual?
00:43:29
Speaker 9: Well, I mean, like Mike said, there's only so much you can do on an ar platform arm just into somebody's hip arm lanes, YadA, YadA, YadA. It just boils down to you know, uh, you could change out the different socks, the the Oh my god, what am I trying? To say, I'm drawing a blank.
00:43:55
Speaker 2: That you're talking about, like the ones like the adjustable cheek rasors.
00:43:59
Speaker 9: Yeah, the Jeff cheek risers or the buffer tubes you know, go from a sixth position or eight position just to kind of change the length a little, but really not much you can do on that or you know, versus a left side or a right side shooting on an ar platform, you just kind of just stuck with what it is. But big difference when you're doing like Mike's saying, when you're doing bolt actions, because you can make huge changes.
00:44:28
Speaker 3: But yeah, well that that's the thing, you know, That's that's where you really got to get dialed in, can you, I mean do it? You know, on the hunting front, you've got a mellowsecond to make that shot. You got to throw it up there, and if you've got to look around and find your crosshairs or looking underneath the scope, your core is gonna buggy, let's say, yeah, yeah, or any any final words on your behalf Chemo.
00:44:56
Speaker 9: Uh No, not much, Yeah, I just uh, just doing some tracking of what La LA's doing back home. It's done quite a bit of damage since about eleven pm last night. Yeah, so not good.
00:45:14
Speaker 3: Okay, well we're real real quick question. How's malloy holding up versus the Big Island? You know, because the the news media has covered the Big Island and kind of treating Maury like a redheaded steps out.
00:45:28
Speaker 9: Well, so far most of the damage is on Big Island. In Cau they just reporting two homes were actually swept away sometime last night, literally swept away. So that's that's not good. But yeah, there's a lot of a lot of a lot of flooding, a lot of mud slides going into Key and I some down trees blocking the road to Hanna. A lot of the ports were affected at the Fort Helokna airports were closed during the storm. Yeah, it's just it's not good. There was some wind guests over one hundred miles an hour my cab, yeah.
00:46:12
Speaker 3: Of course. And of course our good friends are out surfing, right.
00:46:16
Speaker 9: Yeah, you know that's islanders.
00:46:19
Speaker 4: Bro.
00:46:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, we gotta go Wahl Louis Aloha. We'll talk offline, all right, alright, all right, we gotta flip into a break here when we come back. Quite frankly, we're gonna try to get a hold of Captain Bill on the Horizon. If not, we'll just make up stuff as we go along. It's called what we Radio. We'll be right back.
00:46:47
Speaker 1: Now, back to Don McDowell Outdoors on Fox Sports nine ten.
00:47:01
Speaker 3: Alrighty uh, we're back. Thanks for hanging with us. If you just joined us, guess what you missed, Captain Chemo. Uh we have Mike Logan and Nate in.
00:47:14
Speaker 9: Uh.
00:47:15
Speaker 3: Logan's making me clean and nervous. You know, he's got that Afghanistan hat on and and he just says there, grinning. He doesn't say much.
00:47:21
Speaker 2: I think he's just happy to be here.
00:47:24
Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, I don't want to be getting the flashbacks. And all right, can you spell PTSD? There's not a lot going on up there right now. Oh yeah, okay, you're still working on it. Just hey, weathers will be uh you know, graape crayons afterwards.
00:47:43
Speaker 5: Here we go.
00:47:43
Speaker 3: Okay, the fish count is excellent. I'm not really sure what's going on with Echion's website, but the u il spur of the premiere running a Trap's bottom Fish diveal Pacific Kenny out there that ran a full day yesterday. Eighteen anglers, twenty seven yellowfin, seventeen skip jazz I'm happy about the yellow fin, not too happy about the skip jacks because you know, as I tried to describe it politely, last week, skipjacks kind of wipe up the rear of the pelagic migratory season. The Relentless had a full day twenty five. They only had three yellow fin. Getting down to the good stuff. Friday, there was just tons of yellowtail caught Malaheeney. It was a full day off shore. They had fifteen anglers. They had a few four yellow fan nautilus overnight that's a little six pack. They did nine ocean otyssee a little bit bigger boat had a day and a half. They ended up a thirty yellow tail, which is a uh good in my my opinion, only because they're very tasty. So the producer rant on overnight twenty six anglers, they boted one hundred and thirty yellow fan, twenty three skip jack in a dorado, which is all good. Full glory had a good trip, thirty six anglers, thirty yellow fan. I'm not seeing any bluefin on the on the catch list, so we don't know what they're doing. But you know, there are some disturbances out there, and I'm not really sure what Captain builds up to, but hopefully we can catch up with him next week. So all right, back to you guys, take it away. All right.
00:49:44
Speaker 2: One other thing that we didn't talk about that we do as well is we do training.
00:49:49
Speaker 3: So we have a mean to tell me you're trying to train Logan.
00:49:52
Speaker 2: No, no, I mean we have a classroom. Okay, no, No, Logan's training is done in the back.
00:49:58
Speaker 3: Mar we do.
00:50:01
Speaker 2: We do wall to wall training in the back. But yeah, so we we've got a classroom and we do academic training, so we'll do ccw's, we'll do we're partnered with the USCCA, so we'll do protecting houses, worship classes, we do women's self defense classes. And our classroom, the most we've had in there is like fifty six I believe most. Yeah, we had to pull all the tables out and just put a bunch of chairs in. We were dragging couches in front of the door. Usually we only hold up to thirty, but we've had as many as fifty six. So but Nate also does CPR certifications as well, so we do a lot of a lot of training.
00:50:46
Speaker 7: Yeah, we actually just got the CPR side of things. Kind of rolling a little bit more, started scheduling classes.
00:50:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, the dummies to work on and all that stuff.
00:50:54
Speaker 7: Yeah, so I am aligned with care Training Solutions out of I think their p merely out of MESA, but we're starting to get it into the shop. And yeah, so if you go through one of the CPR classes, I think we have it set up with different options. If you want to just show up and get the information, we can also do it where you can actually walk out with your certification, but it's through the it's an AHA certification, so you're gonna get the whole nine yards of You're gonna learn how to do CPR on a mannequin that gives you feedback, and then get all of the information, learn how to use an AED and then if you want, by the end of it, we can make sure that you have the piece of paper that says you know what you're doing.
00:51:38
Speaker 3: Yeah. Cool, I was talking to Mike inter absence. I've got in my flotilla. I've got seven or eight that need to go through CPR. What what kind of time and expense are we're looking at? And do we have to come to you? Can you come to us? I mean for you down I can make whatever work.
00:52:04
Speaker 7: Okay, sometimes it is easier in like the classroom setting and the training room, just because it's a dedicated space and we have everything all set up. I can come out to where like you need me to be. Sometimes with the CPR certifications.
00:52:18
Speaker 3: My vice commander and needs some charge operations and or good friend Chris just sent me a text. He wants to know if you get your CPR dummies from the d NC. Now, so what are you telling me? There's no hope for those guys. That's just not where I get them.
00:52:42
Speaker 2: The dummies have a better chance.
00:52:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's crazy. Well, well there's a bunch need some help in New York City.
00:52:51
Speaker 2: So yeah, Well, we also kind of piggybacking on Nate with the CPR stuff. We we like to put a focus on first aid training to so we also do like stop the bleed glasses because as a gun shop, as a place where you can get your CCW permit, people carry guns, and for some reason, I feel like a lot in the Second Amendment community kind of neglect first aid training and learning how to put on Yeah, learning how to put on tourniquets and save lives is just as important defending yourself.
00:53:28
Speaker 3: How deep you get into trauma. I mean the reality of it is, you have a firearm. Ye, it's not gonna end well, yeah, you can have a mess to deal with. It's not like cut your finger, all right. Yeah.
00:53:42
Speaker 2: So, like I said, well, we'll do uh, tourniquets, wound packing, chess seals pretty much all the trauma related care.
00:53:53
Speaker 3: We we go over that.
00:53:54
Speaker 2: We do have a bleed dummy so when you put the tourniquet on, it stops bleeding.
00:54:00
Speaker 3: Really stuff like that. Yeah, so it's pretty amazing. Yeah.
00:54:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, So we try to our Our focus as a shop as a whole has always kind of been how can we be a one stop shop for anyone in the gun community to get educated, trained, repairs, any accessories or add ons or modifications, upgrades, whatever, all done in one spot.
00:54:24
Speaker 3: Yeah. So yeah, that's uh, you know, we keep all that kind of stuff pretty handy. Trauma pads, duct tape yeah you know, I mean that duct tape, adhesive tape yeah, or duct tape yeah, field medicine yeah yeah, they both work really well. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not real happy with the Silver. I prefer the new Cowbell. Yeah.
00:54:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know what it is, like, the colored ones always stick better.
00:54:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta go with the hot you have to have super gliffy silver.
00:54:55
Speaker 2: Actually I do have, or I had a hot pink roll that had Deadpools on unicorns on them.
00:55:02
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:55:02
Speaker 7: Well my thought is, if you have to bust out the duct tape to patch yourself up, you might as well make it easy for someone to find you.
00:55:09
Speaker 3: Go with the bright ones.
00:55:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, sound logic?
00:55:14
Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay, and do you have the Mickey mouse band aids?
00:55:19
Speaker 6: I prefer you know, the bluey ones?
00:55:21
Speaker 4: You know?
00:55:21
Speaker 3: Okay, Hello, you guys are too much fun. Okay, so how long is this different era?
00:55:28
Speaker 4: Now?
00:55:29
Speaker 3: This medical take?
00:55:32
Speaker 2: Well, like to stop the bleed classes are usually about two hours, just going through like how to assess how much blood someone's lost, and then also, like I said, tourniquets, pack and wounds things like that. So that's that's those. But the CPR ones, CPR and first aid.
00:55:47
Speaker 7: It depends on which one you're going for, So we can split it up where it's just CPR and a ED, and then we can also put the first aid on the back half.
00:55:57
Speaker 3: Okay, if you do that, what's the time frame? Uh, it's a little bit more lengthy.
00:56:03
Speaker 7: Uh, it's a they usually run around like the four four and a half to five hour mark. I usually game plan for close to six just in case people have a lot of questions.
00:56:13
Speaker 3: Well, I'll go with operations and c because that's important. It truly is. And uh, we can only do what we're certified to do. And on the water, it's kind of like guns. You know, you've got boats with props and if you have a prop accident, it's going to be traumatic. Oh yeah, gonle to act quick. Yeah, yeah, you know, I just uh, the things that stick in my mind is not to give you a PTSD, you know, seriously, I mean, you pull up on a scene. We had one Lake Pleasant two years ago. The lady fell off the back of the the house boat and the husband didn't know it and he hadn't reverse, and yeah it didn't end well. Yeah, and unfortunately the kids they were watching or won't get that's terrible. So anyway, you know, and then we have drownings, recoveries and pretty crazy. Yeah, let's talk about something fun for your gun training. How long are your Let's take a pistol one? Oh one? Okay, I've never seen a pistol. Before I need to have a gun, I need to know how it works. What are you going to teach me?
00:57:43
Speaker 2: So we do have a class called Basic Handgun Fundamentals and I'll go through It's about a two hour class and I'll go through, you know, what does it mean on the box of AMMO when it says it's a nine and fifteen grain, and kind of educate on that, and then I'll go through different things like what is single action, what is double action? What is striker fired? That way, in my opinion, as a new gun owner or someone looking to get a gun, understanding all the all the different types that are out there, what recoil means, and and barrel length and how that plays in, just educating someone on all those things, so that way, if they are looking to buy, they can make a good decision.
00:58:27
Speaker 3: So so yeah, okay, kind of how I do that one? Okay nows in that class? Is there a shooting opportunity or do we have to go to a gun range?
00:58:39
Speaker 2: So that's the only thing we don't have is we don't have a range or anywhere to go shoot. But I do we do a dry fire class as well, so we'll go through doing dry fire, so at least we can get the mechanics.
00:58:50
Speaker 3: And I think by but it's that that's the hard thing is to get a class to learn how to drive with your right hand and hanging out the water leftchot when you're dominant right that. Yeah, this is this is Arizona. It's county.
00:59:07
Speaker 2: That's true. Yeah, yep, but yeah, with the drive. But I do like about dry fires, even though we don't have a range. Dry fire is it's free. You know, you can get in a lot of really good reps without spending any any money in ammo or gas getting out too.
00:59:23
Speaker 3: Okay, So all right, hold that we've got to get into a broak here. We're getting getting behind. Coming up, Chris Rich, easy fly shop, yep, or the adventure begins, like all right, it's time to go fly fishing with Chris Ritch. You know, I'm sitting here looking at your Arizona backcountry Uh video you sent that's pretty awesome. What are you up to?
00:59:48
Speaker 5: Well, I'm up here in the wet mounds of Arizona's where I love spending time in the summer. And I'll tell you what this place is gorgeous right now, Green, green, green, we've had lots of rains coming down. The creeks have swelled, they've got a lot of water in them. They're a little off color, and the fish are happy. So that makes me happy.
01:00:08
Speaker 1: That's what I'm up to it.
01:00:09
Speaker 5: And you know that little water. I found a new waterfall yesterday up here in the White Mountains. A lot of backcountry hiking and crawling over boulders and rocks, and holy smokes, I had no idea that was going to be out here. But that's a pretty nice looking waterfall right there, Yes it is.
01:00:26
Speaker 3: How many bears did you see? You know what?
01:00:30
Speaker 5: I didn't see any bears, but I often think about it when i'm down there. I mean, you know, I get into out of the way places where there are no trails, maybe a game trail here and there, but it's I've never had a problem with the bears. I've never had one. I mean, I'm not saying I couldn't, but saying I haven't yet. I've been pretty lucky.
01:00:50
Speaker 3: So yeah, well, you know, I got I got some feedback last week. I suggested, you, you know, wipe your waiters down with beef tallow and RC didn't think that was a very good idea.
01:01:01
Speaker 5: So yeah, you're probably right. Hey, I want to remind everybody we've got the fly Fishing film too, are coming up September twentieth at the Desert Botanical Gardens. It's the best cinematography from the past twelve months. It's a show that travels around the country. We're gonna have it here in Arizona September twentieth. We're partnering with Wildlife for tomorrow. They're gonna be the beneficiary of the event. We'll have a silent auction, we'll have raffle baskets going on, and it's also going on at the same time. The car Rally's going on be our sixth annual car Rally. Last year we had forty four players from all over the Southwest.
01:01:41
Speaker 3: We had people come in.
01:01:42
Speaker 5: From Texas, Colorado, California. We expect to see the same thing this year. So it's shaping up to be a nice year.
01:01:50
Speaker 3: Okay, now those car probably are you going to have a fish fry afterwards?
01:01:55
Speaker 5: I know no fish fry. Most of these carp we're chasing her in the canal. We're catching the white AMers, also known as grass carp. They're owned by SRP and they put them into the canals to keep the vegetation down. You're allowed to fish for them and catch them, but you got to put them back unharmed after you catch them.
01:02:15
Speaker 3: So, uh, I'm going to have to look up my SRP bill. You know, I never even thought about that. Wow.
01:02:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, No, it's really quite amazing what they've done and created. They didn't do it on purpose, but you know, right here in Phoenix we have a very unique fishery one hundred and eighty miles of canals. They're stripers in their bass, bluegill catfish. Occasionally people catch trout, but there's giant carp in the canal as well.
01:02:50
Speaker 3: Shopping carts, bicycles, volkswagens were catching.
01:02:55
Speaker 5: We're catching forty to fifty pound carp you know, right here in the middle of the desert. And I'm not sure there's any place in the country that you're going to catch you have an opportunity to catch as big a freshwater fish as we have right here in.
01:03:09
Speaker 3: Fire It's pretty amazing, pretty amazing. Okay. We have quite a bit of feedback last week on the entomology class. So this time of year, what are you focusing on bug wise match the hatch kind of thing.
01:03:29
Speaker 5: You know, MAT's for me right now. I'm spending a lot of my time in the White Mountains, and this time of year, the lakes are warm, the fish are going deep. They're not super active in the lakes. The creeks up in the high country up over seven seventy five hundred feet, they're still pretty cool and the fish are pretty happy. And so I'll walk those creeks. I primarily like to fish a little ant or a little cattus fly, maybe a grasshopper, but something real small. And those fish are very willing to come up and eat drive flies off the surface in the creaks.
01:04:01
Speaker 3: And Okay, it's a lot of fun to do that answer answer a good bet, absolutely.
01:04:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, fish like ants.
01:04:11
Speaker 3: Okay, I've got to of course.
01:04:14
Speaker 2: Uh.
01:04:16
Speaker 3: One of the listeners wants to know what's the average cost of a drive fly? How do you answer that?
01:04:23
Speaker 5: The average cost? Well, I guess maybe about two three bucks three bucks maybe?
01:04:30
Speaker 3: Okay? Do that is that singularly or do they come in up a pack?
01:04:35
Speaker 5: That'd be that'd be that'd be singularly.
01:04:39
Speaker 3: Okay, So can I come in and get a six pack?
01:04:42
Speaker 5: You can come in and get a six pack if you want.
01:04:44
Speaker 3: Okay, how about a quarts and well court.
01:04:48
Speaker 5: We court, we might find a court somewhere in the shop.
01:04:51
Speaker 3: Well, there's nothing luck a good point. So we've got Mike and uh Logan and Naden here from h Fnry Gun Works. You know, we haven't talked about opening a place in Cuba. Yeah, just to fill he in. You know, I suggested he likes to go to Cuba. Cuba's having problems and it seemed to me like would be a great place for a convenience store called ATF Yeah, alcohol, tobacco and firearms. Yeah, in a communist country, sure that would.
01:05:22
Speaker 2: Go over quite You know.
01:05:27
Speaker 5: I don't know how they do it, but but they some people do have guns in Cuba. They hunt there. I think they've got water buffalo there in Cuba.
01:05:36
Speaker 3: Oh, don't even tell me that.
01:05:38
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, they hunt there. I mean the fishing guy that I fished with, he hunts these these either cape buffalo or water buffalos. He showed me some videos of my man. This that seems kind of crazy. I would have never imagined you could get a gun into Cuba, but somehow they do it. Because there's quite quite a few people over there that and they also hunt deer. There's a lot of deer on the island.
01:05:58
Speaker 3: Oh, now you're talking about language buffalo.
01:06:00
Speaker 6: Dear, let's go here comes a vacation plan. Let's go to keep.
01:06:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, what else you got to add?
01:06:14
Speaker 5: Well, get up, Well, I'll tell you what we've got our We've got our entomology course, like you mentioned, the first Tuesday night of every month. It's a very very popular course. We've also got our primer to fly Fishing course twice a month on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. That's the class the fish don't want you to know about. It takes you from zero to hero in two hours. You're ready to go on the water and terrorize the fish. So if you if you have an interest in getting into the world of fly fishing, stop by the fly shop. We're the friendliest fly shop in the world. We're happy to get you on the water. I believe the world would be a better place if we had more people fly fishing done.
01:06:52
Speaker 3: Amen, you know my thoughts on that. I love it. I love it. Okay, I've got a listener here say that says uh water buffalo were sighted in Apache junction.
01:07:06
Speaker 2: So I don't know if it's the same water buffalo.
01:07:11
Speaker 3: Yep, probably you know, in a trailer park.
01:07:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, little different.
01:07:16
Speaker 3: Yeah all right, man, we gotta go and wish you the best of the rest of the weekend. God ve me. I appreciate it all you do.
01:07:23
Speaker 5: We talked to you next week.
01:07:24
Speaker 3: Don, Yes, sir christ for at jay Z fly Shop. We're flipping under a break come back with uh James Google Hour. See what what do you say about NASCAR last night?
01:07:35
Speaker 1: We'll back to Don McDowell outdoors on Fox Sports nine ten and always on our free iHeartRadio app. Here's the bass daddy and tournament pro Don McDowell.
01:07:47
Speaker 3: Okay, at the podium, it is Chairman Commissioner James Google Hour. James, how are you doing up and downtown pace and where the weather's uh always usually pretty good?
01:08:01
Speaker 4: A good morning, Don. Weather is perfect up here. And I've been thinking about you this week and I'm glad I didn't bet any money with you because you picked the winner of the cookout four hundred and Richmond that was run last night in that car. Then, probably more importantly, I was telling people to use spinner baits and to fish the the mudline last week and you brought up to use a liquo crank base and Angler's overwhelmingly said they were killing them on lipless crank baits. So I'm glad we didn't bet any money.
01:08:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, was that the silver back or the blue back? The blue Okay? Yep, yes, sir, yeah, yeah, okay. Well, you know that's uh, that's good information to have. Right off the top is the uh you know, what the what the heat that we're having in this barometric pressure variation. Is there much of a top water bite. I didn't talk to anybody the last week on top water.
01:09:11
Speaker 4: Hasn't I haven't heard any reports for top water, but just you know, down there at the lake, it is a tunnel basin gets down to eighty five degrees at night, and it's still up over one hundred. It's one hundred and five degrees in the afternoon. Down there. The lake is thirty seven percent full, and that's steady from last week. It's been steady there about three weeks and it's running at one hundred percent of its normal rates for this time of year. So and with the monsoons that we've been having up in Pasting and grim country dawn. It's a pretty average year. I mean, we're getting monsoon rains like every afternoon. Might not be in a large amount of rain, you know, a quarter inch or three eighths of an inch, but it's pretty steady every day. It just he feels pretty normal this year, and I think that's what we're seeing down at the lake. So your top water bite usually once you get under a hundred is when we start seeing that down a rose belt. So I don't think that it's a couple of weeks away, but probably would be too early. A part throwing some early in the morning.
01:10:23
Speaker 3: Well, I've heard there's some hardheaded anglers out there that'll throw top water all day long.
01:10:29
Speaker 4: Oh, they're lots of guys that I know. This is a good bait that Johnny Johnson talks about regularly on his show. So he's one of those dedicated ones that are out there. But for the rest of us, know, we're still calling it summer fishing conditions down there. A drop shot is working very good most of the morning into the late morning, almost up until noon. After that you're probably going to need to move to deeper water or there's like I was saying, there's still a good amount of water running two hundred and seventy qb people wanting per second running into the salt. It's still muddy up there, don but you know a lot of people going up to both ends of the lake. Even the Tonto is flowing in about thirty qbt per second, which is also pretty good for this time of year. So those areas where the water's a little bit stained like that, or right where it goes from the steam to the clear water is always a good place to try.
01:11:37
Speaker 3: One other thing. I got a phone call, I believe it was Tuesday, wanting to know if there's been any alligator sightings up on the salt riverside.
01:11:49
Speaker 4: Okay, we haven't heard that for a lots of years.
01:11:53
Speaker 3: Well, you know, I you know, I put it back on our old from Donald McBride. You know, he was the only one alligators really, you.
01:12:03
Speaker 4: Know, I think he actually released It was rumored a decade but it was rumored he might have released a couple back there.
01:12:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Roosevelt Resort. Oh yeah, that's right. That's okay, real quick, what's commission up to?
01:12:21
Speaker 4: So the commission is all good. Our next meeting is September fourth, So it's coming up here pretty quick. We're going to be up and uh, we're going to stay in Pine talk. The meeting itself is actually in Sholoh at the Chamber of Commerce up there, and as you know, Don these meetings are open to the public. We encourage everybody that's in the area to stop, buy and watch the Commission meeting. We really look forward to talk to people. We'll have our agenda out. We're going to a draft of it right now. We'll have that published here in a week or so, and I hope a lot of people get up there and go see it.
01:12:59
Speaker 3: Yes, And then the big news September one. We have the early season dove opener on September first to the fifteenth, so we're looking forward to taking advantage of that. We've got the gun guys in here from Fennery Gun Works. We're talking about getting your shotgun tuned up, whether it be a pump action or semi automatic or belt fed.
01:13:30
Speaker 2: I know how to I do know how to work on this, Okay.
01:13:32
Speaker 3: Good, good good? Yeah yeah, yeah, so correct me if I'm wrong. The early season, we're allowed to have daily bag limit of fifteen in your possession limit of forty five after the first day. Is that correct?
01:13:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeap, that is right for being there, you know the first that those first weekends there are our big shoot in the western part of the state and actually have now out towards Litchfield in surprise, some organizations putting them on out there, so I get out. We we were laughing last week, thought about it takes me by you know, the ratio of boxes and shelves. But after the show last week, people were texting me going, we understand exactly what you're saying. I'm not the only Look, it's not like, you know, five shots per bird, it's for like two and a half boxes.
01:14:34
Speaker 3: Per yeah, yeah, okay, Now do we have I don't see a differential between white wing and morning does. So all we have to worry about is eleven of fifteen of either.
01:14:53
Speaker 4: All right, I don't have it in front of me, but that sounds about right.
01:14:57
Speaker 3: Okay, okay. And then the possessional limit, uh that is after the first day. So does that count what you have in your in your freezer or your ice chest in the field.
01:15:12
Speaker 4: That's your cooler, and what you got in your game bag?
01:15:15
Speaker 3: Yes, sir, okay, yep, all right, Well we're looking forward to We've got a place to go, and uh, I'm hearing rumors of Maracopa Uh feed lots down there there. There's still a couple are welcoming the uh the dove shooters. But one thing I want to point out, it is absolutely paramount to pick up your trigger, trash, don't leave. You know, your your spin shellcasings, Popkinns, beer bottles, you know whatever is clean up your mess, you know, I mean that's right.
01:15:54
Speaker 4: I agree with that. And you know, this is one of those times where all your hard work was top ramp supply kind of pays off. You probably know some mice fields down there in southern Arizona to go hunt.
01:16:06
Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely. The other thing is you're raising collared doves are an invasive species, so make sure you take all those you can. There's no bag limit and you can hunt them year round. There you go. But I know Glendale they get upset if there's random gunfire at the park and the guy that will ye the guy comes to visit, his name Officer Bob. From what I hear, so, I hear you all right, anything else, We're gonna get this thing wrapped up. What what did you think about NASCAR last night.
01:16:46
Speaker 4: Well that was that. I mean you texted me and you you picked Joey Lagana to win that, and he did. But how about Carl Larson. Larson flies to Iway and wins the Knoxville Dirt Track National after finished the sixth at the cook Out four hundred. He started in thirtieth, finished at sixth, literally ran to a helicopter, into an airplane, flew to Knoxville where there was a rain delay, raised that race and won it.
01:17:22
Speaker 3: Sweet four times guys, a master. I'm telling you, Yeah, I just don't know what was going on with that five car, you know, the first half of the race, and uh, you know he's like the comeback kid. I don't whether he's sandbagging or not wanting to, you know, push a race car and wear it out or Yeah, there's so many kit strategies it's just crazy.
01:17:47
Speaker 4: So only two races left before the chase starts. So and he's not qualified yet, so he's got some work to.
01:17:54
Speaker 3: Do, Yes he does. All right, God love you. I appreciate all you did for the state of Arizona. And we'll do this again next week.
01:18:02
Speaker 4: Thank you.
01:18:03
Speaker 3: John James Coo get our Commissioner, Chairman of AZGFD Commission. All right, we're gonna flip into a break here. When we come back, we're gonna get all the contact information for these gun guys over here. Really a pleasure having you guys down here. And uh, I want to I want to get a ten minute monologue from Logan over here. Okay, good luck, Okay, yeah, yeah, all right, we'll be right back here at Fox Sports nineteen. Okay, hope you learned something today. We've had a lot of fun having Mike, Nate and Logan in here talking with Captain Chemo and Chris Rich and all that kind of stuff. Unfortunately we didn't get Captain Bill. So let me ask you this, what have we missed about your gun works? What haven't we talked about?
01:19:02
Speaker 2: I can't think of anything.
01:19:04
Speaker 6: I would say the laser engraving side of it.
01:19:06
Speaker 2: We uh yeah, yeah, I mean I talked about it with the slide.
01:19:11
Speaker 3: But yeah, we do.
01:19:12
Speaker 2: We do laser engraving. Other things to include laser engraving. We do run special days, so on Tuesdays we do tune up Tuesdays. It's a pretty much optic site focused.
01:19:25
Speaker 3: Thursday, we could do taco Thursday. That would be fun.
01:19:29
Speaker 2: But yeah, on Tuesdays we do discounted zeroing for optics, mounting optics, checking iron sights, making sure everything's sighted in up optics.
01:19:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, talking with Chemo. We've been messing around with Mebrolte. What optics do you push.
01:19:47
Speaker 2: Depends on on what you're putting on on handguns. I've carried hellos On for years. I also have carried o Sites recently for good quality but a better price range. Those two are really good. Tragic On obviously is really good if you have the budget for that. As far as like rifle optics, I've used sig optics, I've used holosund Optics, used Trigacon.
01:20:21
Speaker 3: Let me present an issue to you. I've got to carry that. It's nineteen eleven called nineteen eleven Combat Elite Series eighty. Very fond of that, really like it, had it since nineteen ninety two and I've got a bulkary muscle break on it and which I like. That gun specifically is one of the security details that I do is at my church. So I've got a that closed space. I put the muscle break on it to reduce my muzzle bux so I could reacquire the target more quickly, yep, but it's problematic. It makes it two inches more longer.
01:21:13
Speaker 2: I had one of those mounted on one of my nineteen elevens for a long time.
01:21:16
Speaker 3: Okay, so if I take that off, what can you do? Is this where you start putting flutes and lowers or whatever you call them.
01:21:25
Speaker 2: Putting basically just like this. We can do them off on the side. Those are b ports, so that way you can keep your front sight, but you push the ports up close to the front end of the muzzle help keep the recoil down.
01:21:37
Speaker 3: Is that in the John Wick style?
01:21:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, it started getting into that. Yeah, okay, but yeah that's something that we do. I've done ports using the mill, I've done ports using the laser. Yeah we can.
01:21:49
Speaker 3: We can do that.
01:21:50
Speaker 2: That helps reduce recoil. So yeah, yeah, absolutely, Yeah, so our special days real quickly hop on those again. Tuesday's optics Fridays, we do form one laser engraving. With all the NFA stuff that's happened. We might be changing that because the NFA just who knows what's going on with that. It's kind of a weird phase we're in right now with that whole decision with silencer shop and yeah and everything.
01:22:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, those whole can of worms.
01:22:19
Speaker 4: It is.
01:22:19
Speaker 2: It's I love the way it's going. It's definitely getting us going in the right direction. But you know, it's it's a big change for everybody. And then Saturdays we do discounted cleanings, so that way if you're looking to get your your rifle, pistol, shotgun, whatever cleaned.
01:22:36
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, well I'm arrest of these guys, you know, taking the time to really take a look at their shotguns. Yeah. I'm not too concerned about pumps. Yeah, I've got a high end uh semi auto that, like I said, I haven't shot at I've got an all uh Mosburg five hundred that has had a train load of rounds through it. You know, it's like my ak Yeah yeah, our RC laughs out because you can shake it, you know, you can hear me.
01:23:03
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, I mean Mosburg five hundreds and the older M eight seventies, those things are just tanks.
01:23:11
Speaker 3: Like oh yeah, well I bought a lot. I bought a thirty inch barrel for it.
01:23:16
Speaker 4: Yeah.
01:23:16
Speaker 3: So dove wise, it'll read doves, ducks, it'll reach out and touch somebody. Yeah, and uh, you know, we got the pray and spray on the A K forty seven and then the Mosburg no matters flatter, it's you know, yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. Yeah, you know, you know I have to giggle because you know, some of the circles I run around. These guys got you know, four thousand dollars shotguns and I got my Mosburg? What are you doing without us? Without shooting you?
01:23:46
Speaker 2: Okay, yep, yeah, that's that's true. Contact information. Uh yeah, so we're on We're on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube all at fener gun Works. We have a website at Finraar Gunworks that's spelled f E n R i R gunworks dot com.
01:24:08
Speaker 3: That's thing of Viking. Yeah, and let's say, now, do you have an I R A membership for him? Uh n R A I L A or E or g I R A I R the Irish guys, Oh I'm part Irish.
01:24:25
Speaker 2: Yeah anyway, Yeah, all our contact info is on the website with our training, calendar, emails, phone numbers all that. If you've got any questions, feel free to reach out to us. So we are closed on Sundays though.
01:24:39
Speaker 3: Okay, here's a question, Okay, what do you think about cleaning shells that you that you buy.
01:24:51
Speaker 2: Cleaning ammunition. The cleaning ammunition like fire through.
01:24:57
Speaker 3: You need to wipe it down before you shoot it.
01:25:00
Speaker 2: Those those can be good if you have a lot of build up in your barrel, it helps clear it out. Other than that, I would run, you know, maybe one just to help clean out carbon build up. And that's that's about it. You'll kind of run us wip through it.
01:25:14
Speaker 3: And then as R c Rcy preaches more oil every time he sees my ak goes you need more oil.
01:25:26
Speaker 2: I don't know aks could run without anything.
01:25:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, don't don't tell him that. All right, Well we've had a lot of fun. Hope you learned something that you know. The main thing is be safe on the hunting front. Make sure you have your migratory bird stamp for for dove season, the Arizona game, and fish Eat tag app in your phone. It's gonna make life a lot easier. So we appreciate you. Listen, follow us on Facebook, YouTube and all of our the Instagram and x and all that kind of stuff on the social media platform. So big thing is war more caught and eat more beef. Take you kids, fish and hug your bass boat, and yep, we'll be back next week.
01:26:13
Speaker 1: Don McDowell. Outdoor Radio has been sponsored by Southwest Ranch Apply.

01:26:13
