00:00:00
Speaker 1: Now, back to Dirty Work. Adam Copeland and Derek Papa on KNBR 104.5 and 680 AM.
00:00:09
Speaker 2: The Sports Leader. Dirty Work on a Wednesday afternoon. Adam Copeland, D-Pop, Danny Dunn with you. Steve Young joins us in about 10 minutes.
00:00:28
Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
00:00:28
Speaker 3: 4.50.
00:00:29
Speaker 2: For his biweekly conversation. He'll join us today, and then next Wednesday he'll be with Murph and Marcus, and he'll be with us the following Wednesday, and then with Murph and Marcus the one after that. But he'll get his first hit in today at 4.50. When NFL and college coaches talk, we like to listen.
00:00:45
Speaker 3: They say fun stuff. They say funny stuff.
00:00:47
Speaker 2: They say controversial things, and that's why we've got a segment that we like to call Coach Pete.
00:00:52
Speaker 1: When NFL coaches speak, we listen.
00:00:55
Speaker 2: I just think it's difficult to box without sparring.
00:00:58
Speaker 4: I couldn't get free copies. Football season. Most players. Football season.
00:01:02
Speaker 2: This is Coach Speak on the Sports Leader. All right, Coach Speak, a post-week six, pre-week seven edition of Coach Speak. By the way, the Monday night for the Niners is so nice when it turns right around. We got two days later, we get a Thursday night football game.
00:01:17
Speaker 5: Yeah, Pat Spares, baby.
00:01:18
Speaker 2: Pat Spares tomorrow. Dan won't be watching that, though. Dan will be a clay face. Isn't that right, Danny? That's right.
00:01:25
Speaker 3: You have confirmation.
00:01:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, good.
00:01:26
Speaker 2: Thank you for that, Dan. Let's get right into it here with some coach speak. A guy who shows up, is he like, I would say, we used to always, years ago when me and Tom were doing the show, I would say our most, we called it sage advice back then.
00:01:39
Speaker 5: That's right.
00:01:39
Speaker 2: Because we used to get sage advice from guys like Bill Belichick.
00:01:42
Speaker 5: And Mike Leach.
00:01:42
Speaker 3: And Mike Leach. And then Mike Leach passed RIP.
00:01:45
Speaker 2: Yes. So we kind of changed the segment, but I would say that Harbaugh, Belichick, McVay Gruden might be the most common voices to show up in coach speak.
00:01:58
Speaker 5: I think we do McVay once a week.
00:01:59
Speaker 6: And after some of the hard losses, McVay's passionate and he's feeling it right now with all the pressure of this team.
00:02:05
Speaker 2: It has, well, he's up at the top here of our, uh, of our coach speak. Here's Sean McVay. He's reacting to that loss at the hands, 18, 16 to the Arizona Cardinals.
00:02:15
Speaker 7: You know, congrats to the Cardinals. You know, we're, we won't win a game unless we figure out how not to beat ourselves. Uh, Just so many unforced errors, so many things that are not in alignment with what we want to do, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Give up a big return to be able to start, lose the kicker, covering on that kickoff coverage, and that comes out for a big gain. And so, you know, we didn't do enough. And I thought our defense did enough to keep us in the game. But any time that we'd string a little bit of momentum, we'd turn it over, we'd take a negative. You know, we'd jump off sides on a fourth and three to put it to a fourth down and eight.
00:02:48
Speaker 4: And so.
00:02:49
Speaker 7: We have a lot to look at ourselves on and we have to be able to go back to the drawing board and figure out how we improve. Because like I just told you guys, you know, to be able to not beat ourselves before we figure out how to even come away with some of the results.
00:03:01
Speaker 5: And it's not even good enough. I got to do a much better job.
00:03:04
Speaker 7: And clearly that, you know, today is, you know, there's nothing positive that I can say about today. Um, you know, I do love the group. Uh, I appreciate the way that they continue to battle. Thought we had a chance to be able to, you know, come away with the result that we hunted up. It was pretty cool to be able to see Ethan punch in the extra point and Stetson to be able to hold. And, um, unfortunately on the very first play of the two minute, you know, they, we give up a big play and then, uh, they tack on the 15. So, That was kind of a good humbling day. This is the challenging part of sports.
00:03:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, I like pie, especially humble pie. Nice to have a slice of that with Thanksgiving around the corner.
00:03:39
Speaker 6: I mean, all of his press conferences sound the same except for the one where he was like, yeah, you know, your dumbass coach decides to go out the day before to Australia.
00:03:46
Speaker 5: Then you win a game. He's feeling it right now.
00:03:49
Speaker 6: He's feeling the pressure, and I go back to that 60 Minutes interview that came after the loss of the 49ers where he was like, I mean, I was contemplating leaving football. I was going to go to Amazon Prime and be that analyst next to Al Michaels, and I don't.
00:04:03
Speaker 5: Think he's going to do that right now. I think he likes coaching, but.
00:04:06
Speaker 6: There was a ton of pressure on this team when the season started, and now the way it looks, he was pissed off last week. He sounds less pissed there, but it's like, what else could go wrong for them right now?
00:04:16
Speaker 5: The kicker gets hurt. Matthew Stafford's not playing great. I don't know about the Rams right now.
00:04:21
Speaker 2: Matt Maioco said something to us on the pregame. I think it was on the pregame show. Maybe it was to us last week. I can't remember. It might have been the pregame show on Monday where he said, I've got a theory. He said, my feeling is like, I wonder if there's something going on in that locker room. This is what Maioco said. Following Australia, with how the coaching staff handled Australia, if the players have never totally regrouped or gotten the feeling that they're on the same page as the staff or that they were looked after and didn't get it done the right way, is there a lack of belief in how they've gone about things?
00:04:50
Speaker 6: Yeah, I just think that it's kind of thrown them off. I don't know if they question the coaching staff by any means. I think a lot of those guys like Sean McVay.
00:04:55
Speaker 4: I think so, too.
00:04:56
Speaker 2: But he's saying more about the philosophy of it, and maybe it derailed them a little.
00:04:59
Speaker 5: I think so.
00:05:00
Speaker 6: I mean, I brought that up with Marcus Thompson after they got blown out in that game. And I go back to the Warriors getting off to a sluggish start when they won the championship, then went to Japan for however long in preseason, and then they did not look good. I think it's kind of affecting the Rams right now where they look sluggish offensively. They look great against the Buffalo Bills offensively, but they can't stop anybody. It's not going to be like where things are rectified as soon as Miles Garrett comes back.
00:05:23
Speaker 5: So I don't know.
00:05:24
Speaker 6: They kind of remind me, dude, of the Brooklyn Nets. with KD where like all of them were injured at a certain time and none of them played together. That's the way it feels right now where Myles Garrett will come back, but Devontae Adams is hurt now.
00:05:35
Speaker 5: So I really don't know what the Rams right now.
00:05:37
Speaker 2: By the way, I'm just looking up here at the Miami heater plan. That's a fun-looking lineup, dude. I'm out of bio, Clay, Giannis, Wiggins.
00:05:43
Speaker 5: It's going to be fun in Miami, man.
00:05:44
Speaker 2: That's a fun-looking lineup.
00:05:45
Speaker 5: It's going to be fun in Miami.
00:05:46
Speaker 2: I think it's going to be a fun team this year. Moving on here in coach speak, Nick Sirianni, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. I got to tell you, this is the worst I've ever felt for Nick Sirianni. Not a big fan of the dude as a coach. Nothing against him personally, of course, but he's being questioned and grilled. After we find out that Jalen Hurts is dealing with blood clots, he missed that last game. Then we find he's got blood clots in his lungs. He's not ruled out for the season. The big questions are like, how could you have told him he couldn't sleep? Not you, Sirianni, but how could doctors have told him he couldn't sleep the night before a game in London? And then how did you allow him to fly back from London with blood clots? It's an alarming thing. The bigger problem here in my mind is, He got Nick Sirianni sitting down to answer these questions in front of the media.
00:06:28
Speaker 3: These are medical things. Here's Nick Sirianni.
00:06:31
Speaker 6: Nick, why was John Hurts allowed to fly home despite the team knowing that he had a blood clot?
00:06:36
Speaker 8: Again, I'm not a medical expert. Same deal there. We get medical information from our guys, and we always put the player's health first and foremost in every situation. And, you know, that's where we were there.
00:06:52
Speaker 5: Were you briefed by the medical team?
00:06:55
Speaker 6: Before you do this press conference on why he was permitted to fly despite the blood clot?
00:06:59
Speaker 8: Yeah, guys, I talked to them a lot.
00:07:01
Speaker 4: Can you give us the information? I talked to the guys. Hey, Jeff. As a spokesman of the.
00:07:06
Speaker 5: Team, we're just hoping you give us some information for the public.
00:07:09
Speaker 4: Thank you.
00:07:10
Speaker 8: Guys, I've addressed this. I've talked to you guys about this. Again, the medical experts are there, and I think I've answered this question multiple times. We put out a statement. for you guys to hear, put out multiple statements for you guys to hear. And so, and I, and I told you guys that last week that I was going to leave it at that of where, you know, where we were on that because we put out a detailed statement for you guys to hear and understand.
00:07:38
Speaker 6: I mean, I, I feel for him, honestly, and I know that he's not the best football coach, but to be up there by himself, it kind of reminds me years ago when John Gruden had the emails and nobody stood up there. It was just Mike Mayock and Derek Carr and nothing from the owner. This is where Jeffrey Laurie or Howie Roseman need to step up to and answer some questions because.
00:07:56
Speaker 5: I understand that.
00:07:57
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:07:58
Speaker 6: In a way that Nick Sirianni is the spokesman for the Eagles.
00:08:01
Speaker 5: He's also the football coach. Like, you know, um, You sent.
00:08:06
Speaker 6: Us that clip of Joe Mazzulla answering questions live.
00:08:08
Speaker 5: On the radio in Boston.
00:08:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
00:08:09
Speaker 2: Joe Mazzulla took questions from media in Boston, or from callers in Boston.
00:08:13
Speaker 5: From fans.
00:08:14
Speaker 6: And one of the fans was like, dude, I wish you would kind of like at least engage with the media a little bit more because you're our insight.
00:08:21
Speaker 5: As far as what's going on with the team. And he's like, I'm not really, guys.
00:08:24
Speaker 2: He says, sometimes I'm not talking to you.
00:08:25
Speaker 5: I'm here to coach the basketball team.
00:08:27
Speaker 2: He said, sometimes my answers are not geared for the audience or media consumption. Sometimes I'm trying to make a point to my team. Sometimes I'm trying to make a point to my staff. And you should use every tool at your disposal to help your team win.
00:08:38
Speaker 6: So with that, with Nick Sirianni, I understand that maybe people feel that the Eagles screwed up in this way with... Jalen Hurts, and that's fine to think that way. The NFL came out, their doctors had said everything was handled above board, and now the NFLPA is going to have their own investigation. But I think it should be somebody besides Nick Sirianni because I bet you Kyle Shanahan would have the same answers if he was in the same situation.
00:08:56
Speaker 2: Why is Sirianni the one having to answer these questions? These weren't his medical decisions. He doesn't make the decision on if a player plays or not. When the medical staff clears a player, it's up to him to put him in the lineup and say, yeah, this is my starting lineup based on who's available to me. You tell me who's available. And you know that that's the truth based on when Kyle has asked medical questions and he says, I wasn't given an update on him today. Exactly. Means he's not out there going, what's he doing? How's this going? Where's this going? He's getting the report from the medical staff. And if there's no report, there's no update.
00:09:22
Speaker 6: He's also coaching a football team. And yes, he has briefed on the health of the players. But at the same time, like this is a very delicate situation to ask a.
00:09:28
Speaker 5: Nick Sirianni over and over and over again. It's not the right guy to ask these questions to.
00:09:32
Speaker 2: We have plenty more coach speak. We got Jim Harbaugh. We got John Harbaugh. We got Aaron Glenn. We got Shane Steichen. We got Kurt Cignetti. And we've got Dan Hurley. We've got college basketball coach speak. But before we can do any of that, we've got to get to Steve Young. Steve Young, number eight. The Hall of Famer joins us every other week here on Wednesdays. And the off Wednesdays, he joins the morning show, Murph and Marcus. Steve Young, number eight, the best half hour in sports radio, joins us next. Dirty Work on a Wednesday. Steve Young's coming up on the Sports Leader.
00:10:01
Speaker 1: Now, back to Dirty Work. Adam Copeland and Derek Papa in the KNBR Casino Matrix Progressive Jackpot Studios. Casino Matrix Progressive Jackpots are here.
00:10:13
Speaker 5: Where are you?
00:10:15
Speaker 1: Just drop in.
00:10:16
Speaker 5: Please play responsibly.
00:10:17
Speaker 1: Call 1-800-GAMBLER.
00:10:20
Speaker 3: What a treat.
00:10:22
Speaker 2: Post-week six ahead of week seven of the 2026 NFL season, we get our first hit with Steve Young. And as always, when Steve Young joins us, we get a Forever Young Hero of the Week. KNBR and the Forever Young Foundation are committed to providing opportunities and awareness to help those in need in many communities around the Bay Area. And today, we have a special guest with us. Steve, first of all, great to have you join us, man. Good to have you back for another season, man.
00:10:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's fun. Fun to be back and And 6-0, I guess it's my chance. Jump in.
00:10:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, whatever you're feeling up to it, Steve. Sounds good, too.
00:10:57
Speaker 2: Water's warm, Steve.
00:10:58
Speaker 4: Come on in.
00:10:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, come on in, dude. We got plenty of room, man.
00:11:01
Speaker 2: We'll get to all that with the football stuff, but we got to talk about the Forever Young Foundation, Hero of the Week. And Sutter Health and the Steve Young and the Forever Young Foundation are going to host a youth flag football camp for girls ages 7 to 14 as part of their ongoing partnership. Participants will take part in a hands-on drills, skills-building activities, mentorship design program, to help encourage physical activity, build confidence, and foster teamwork both on and off the field. And here to talk about it, he's going to be a part of the camp, Dr. Shannon Good, who can speak to the physical and mental health benefits of youth sports and how encouraging this activity can be at an early age to help establish healthy habits that last a lifetime.
00:11:34
Speaker 3: And Dr. Good joins us as well on the UMA Guest Line. How you doing, Doc? What's going on?
00:11:39
Speaker 9: I'm doing well. How are you all doing?
00:11:41
Speaker 3: We're doing well. It's great to have you.
00:11:42
Speaker 2: So you'll be joining in at the flag football camp on Saturday, the girls flag football camp. As a sports medicine physician, why are opportunities like this so important for young girls?
00:11:53
Speaker 9: Opportunities like this are good for young girls because getting involved in youth sports goes right across the board. It builds leadership skills early. It builds confidence. It helps us to establish good exercise habits young that lasts us a lifetime.
00:12:09
Speaker 2: Fantastic stuff. And Steve has been a longtime advocate for getting girls more involved in football and helping coach flag football and all that. Why is it important to create more opportunities specifically for young girls to participate in sports like this?
00:12:22
Speaker 9: I think the main thing with getting girls involved in sports is building that confidence. You know, a lot of times we go out and we talk about. mental health and physical well-being and things like that. But building confidence in young girls starts early. And giving them the opportunity to be a part of a team and to have access to opportunities such as leadership and things like that with sports goes a long way. And I think it all comes down to the confidence that we're instilling into these young girls, that they can do anything, they can lead, and they can go far in life.
00:12:50
Speaker 3: That's well said.
00:12:51
Speaker 2: And I think we're all experiencing that right now, even like watching the Valkyrie in the WNBA finals.
00:12:54
Speaker 3: I mean, look at what that's done.
00:12:55
Speaker 2: Steve, I know you're paying attention to that and how incredible that has been in the Bay Area, but we're getting professional women's leagues and sports really blowing up in this area too.
00:13:03
Speaker 4: Empowering women to play football, a game that they've watched for a hundred years. I'm watching a game right now where we have a big arch rival, Archbishop Ritmitty and us, and like the game's 2.30 left. Like the girls love football and They love to participate. And the fact is, the stats show that half of the girls in sports leave at age 14. By 14, they're out. And it's like, we're not going to abide that. That's not cool. And so I think I appreciate Sutter jumping in, trying to help her to get girls. Jerry Rice and I are going to run the camp. Let's show them how it's done. But it really is just empowerment, right? And that's what's really fun about it, and leadership. And so we want more and more women with a... positive coaching Alliance and women's coaching Alliance to get more women coaching the sport. And we got to do that as well. So I'm big for that. And I appreciate Sutter jumping in and thank you, Shannon, for joining us. Yeah.
00:14:00
Speaker 3: Well said.
00:14:00
Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Dr.
00:14:01
Speaker 4: Shannon.
00:14:01
Speaker 2: We appreciate you. Thank you.
00:14:04
Speaker 4: All right. Great stuff.
00:14:05
Speaker 3: We'll see you Saturday, Saturday, the, the Sutter health.
00:14:09
Speaker 4: There you go.
00:14:10
Speaker 2: The girls' youth flag football camp in Sacramento. And I guess it's a perfect opportunity for us. I think Danny's still back there behind the glass. Do we have him there to hit our Steve Young open? I guess not.
00:14:19
Speaker 3: We'll just have to move on and pretend.
00:14:20
Speaker 2: To play the open for you, Steve.
00:14:22
Speaker 4: Steve Young is back, baby.
00:14:24
Speaker 5: It's weeks. We worked hard on that, Steve.
00:14:28
Speaker 3: Come on.
00:14:29
Speaker 4: 15 years ago.
00:14:30
Speaker 3: It's the same one for like 20 years.
00:14:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exactly. I know you guys are behind the glass. Look, I love you guys because I know you're from years behind playing behind the glass. I know that's really offensive to you.
00:14:41
Speaker 5: I'm so offended, Steve.
00:14:43
Speaker 3: We're all good. Danny's the one in tears today.
00:14:45
Speaker 2: It's okay, man.
00:14:47
Speaker 3: It is great to have you. It's so funny.
00:14:48
Speaker 2: We sit here doing the show like every Wednesday and we look up. We see you on PTI. We look out there and you're... You're doing game day, dude. How fun was that? How fun was that, dude? I mean, it's one of the most, it's the most viewed game day of the season. And I think it's in the top 10 viewership all time. You had an incredible performance. What a, what a cool spotlight on Provo this weekend.
00:15:05
Speaker 4: Yeah. And I think that we've done it, you know, as we're going to BYU community is finally like less, less, less like defensive and less like feeling like we're in the middle of the mountains and no one knows us. And we're like, like, there's just a really like a spirit of like, like, curiosity, like, come on, join us. We love you're here. Welcome. Let's play some ball. And I think Notre Dame really felt that. And I, I felt it that morning. They had, they had like 10,000 people out for the game day. And, uh, and it was fun. It was, uh, and Pat McAfee, we were, we did a little shtick about me coming back from my fifth year. I sued for a, fifth.
00:15:40
Speaker 3: Year and got it.
00:15:44
Speaker 4: No dude it made me think like maybe i'm gonna you know what let's.
00:15:48
Speaker 10: Go let's go but uh it was fun and then the picks the picks i i i realized someone told me when byu was playing it's like hey bro you're nine for nine on the picks and there was a.
00:16:01
Speaker 4: Byu in utah left for the picks and i ended up 10 for 10 it was just funny it's funny that uh it all worked.
00:16:07
Speaker 5: Out No, that's awesome.
00:16:08
Speaker 6: And a huge win for BYU, 28-24 over Notre Dame. And, I mean, huge celebration. Everybody rushed the field. Got to ask, Steve, though, your analyst hat on. What did you think of that final play?
00:16:18
Speaker 5: A little P.I.
00:16:18
Speaker 8: On there?
00:16:20
Speaker 4: No, in fact, I was– I'm glad you asked because I was there. I was actually standing about two feet away. And, you know, I've been around a long time. And I'm not a, I'm not a Homer here. I'm just trying to tell you what I, what I reacted to is that it was four seconds left. And, and I, and, and if you're going to run a play, that's not a catch and throw, then your four seconds are gone. And so they, the, the, the play lasted over four seconds. We get that. Someone was late on the clock. That's fine. If there was a second left, they should have been given it. And that's whatever. I mean, I'm wanting to be what it is, but as far as the play itself, I think I'm the last play of the game. If you're going to run a little fade from inside, like to me, it was, I don't know, it was a week. I call it bad pass interference or good pass interference. Right, yeah. Meaning bad pass. Like, if it's a bad pass, I don't know if that's much of an... Like, yeah, you know, our guy was held by their guy, their guy's like... But it was a bad call. It was a bad play. So it's like, bro, we're not going to... You don't get that. And that's why I hate, I hate in the NFL when somehow someone throws up a lollipop on the sidelines and they got interference. Like, bro, that was a crappy throw. It doesn't deserve. Yeah. Like give me good pass interference. Like someone throws a, an intentional ball that's in great spot and somebody gets interfered, give it to them all day long. But if some quarterback throws up some piece of crap and, and not, it's not worthy of it, then let, let people play. But anyway, I didn't, I didn't, I have all the plays that were, you know, At risk. That one was not one of them. That play was like, whatever, you're going to run a little fade and get into a hand fight and then have a bad pass. Like, come on, bro. Exactly.
00:17:57
Speaker 5: A win is a win.
00:17:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
00:17:58
Speaker 2: Steve Young with us on the end.
00:17:59
Speaker 4: Well, no, I mean, look, I don't mind. I don't mind playing it out. I'm not trying to homer. I'm just watching it from two feet.
00:18:07
Speaker 2: No, that's not the one. Let's jump into some Niner football, man. We were playing a clip from you from last week on with Murph and Marcus saying the Niner's got to be aggressive. And Derek and I come trade deadline, and you got to go in and all in on this team.
00:18:21
Speaker 3: And I totally agree.
00:18:22
Speaker 2: We were talking about the difference in our tone around this team from the Pollyanna tone we had around the team last year, where that was like, hey, man, just take what they're giving us, and we'll run with that. But 6-0 and a legit 6-0, I'm running out of reasons to think this team is not the Super Bowl favorite out of the NFC, Steve.
00:18:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think we should stand on those shoes, especially with the Rams 2 and 4 and the Seahawks. They're both kind of reeling in a way right now. Let's stand on those shoes. That's fine. Let's go into it. But let's also recognize out of 12 halves that I've seen played that the last half is the one that puts me with a little shiver, right? It's like... We can't, you know, we get people hurt. We're not full speed. We don't have everyone on the field. You know, we have young players making, like, who knew Grayson was going to be the MVP of the first six games of strip sack and, like, fumbles and big plays. And, like, there's been some names of guys that are just playing great. But I just, I worry. I still worry. So I want to stay a worried tone because I know that the games are coming towards the end of the season. Are we the ones that decide it? And I just, I want us locked in. I don't want us to get like, Oh, we're, you know, we got games to give. We, I don't want, I don't want that. I want to, I, if we can go 17, you know, that's great. That's what I want to do. I don't want to, I don't want to look back. I don't want to take the pedal gas foot off the pedal. I want to, I want to sprint to, you know, as many wins as we can and then be as healthy as we possibly can. If like Mike Evans gets hurt, you saw what a difference to have four hall of famers on offense. I mean, you got Christian McCaffrey, you got Mike coming out of the society at Georgia. You got Trent, you got like, you got, we've everybody can just stay healthy. We're going to be in the mix. It's awesome.
00:20:12
Speaker 5: Talking to the Hall of Famer Steve Young on the UMA guest line.
00:20:15
Speaker 6: And, yes, the offense only had 72 yards of offense in the second half there. But what did you make of the defense and their ability to close that game out, Steve?
00:20:22
Speaker 4: Yeah. But, yeah, close it out. But, like, my point is that are we a top five defense? Are we a top five offense? I think when everybody's healthy, I think yes. If somehow we don't have the health and we have some exposure and we got against a top-line quarterback, you don't see every day in this league. I don't know how many guys you really fear. You'd think there'd be more than five. But that's what I'm saying. The second half of the game, I just don't like, you know, you're cruising to a victory. I'm being picky, right, because we're 6-0. But I want to make sure that we lock things down because we're not– we don't have that. The team in 23 was by far the best roster in football. That's the fact. And we were just running people out of the state. We just run them out. And I just, that's not what's going to happen this year. So we're going to get in some dogfights, maybe more than we want to. And so I don't want to get in dogfights by allowing teams that are, that are down and out ways to live again. You know what I mean? Like, like of all the games where we want to just put people away or the games where we're in, We're not in the dogfight, and I think there's dogfights coming, and I just want to make sure we're ready for them.
00:21:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, the schedule's going to get more difficult. Of course, you get into the colder months. I mean, October's not where you want to peak. I guess I would ask is, have they been, and this is maybe not the right phrasing, but are they overly reliant on Mike Evans, too reliant on Mike Evans? I'm not sure how I want to put that, because I don't think that's a bad thing per se, but how do you view that?
00:21:55
Speaker 4: That's how good he is. He's subtle. Dude is subtle. And like, and I think Brock is subtle a little bit. Like they're like, they call him the later King, whatever they go over the coast. That's subtlety. They, they both, they both play to each other. Subtleties. I don't, I love watching the two of them work that magic. And I think that it only can be more and more expansive as if he can stay healthy, right? If he can, then it's going to be the threat from outside. You have a tough time in this league without somebody outside that makes everybody go, Oh, spread out, watch out, be careful. And without him, you saw in the second half, we don't, We're not– I'm not– there's no– there's nothing against anybody. It's just that defenses are not going to– it's predatory. The league is predatory. They're going to feel. They're going to creep. They're going to try to shut down. They're going to get tighter. They're going to– and it just gets harder and harder. So that's why having him healthy is huge. George has shocked me. We turn from Achilles and run 60-yard touchdowns running away from people. Who rehabbed this– This man. Yeah. Like whoever, find out who rehabbed this man and get this guy. Like, let's shout him out. Who is this guy? Who is this woman? Who is this? I think it's George Kittle full speed at 34 back on the field in nine months, man. This has been the, that's the surprise of the season is that George is dominating. And I never could imagine that happen. So that like all of that tells me George stays healthy. Mike stays healthy. Christian stays healthy. Obviously Brock, but then Trent number one, Like then we're in, we're, we're thinking it second, somebody goes down and it's going to get, it'll get hairier. And, uh, what are we ready for? But that's what I'm saying. It's like, we have the degree of the degree of difficulty this year based on, you know, versus 23. It's just, it's going to be harder. Even at six. No, it's going to be harder. And we got to be ready for that fight.
00:23:45
Speaker 5: Steve, if you want to shout somebody out, I think it's Dr.
00:23:47
Speaker 6: Neil Elitrosh that had George Kittle do his rehab this offseason.
00:23:50
Speaker 4: Well, Neil Elitrosh, I know Neil. I know Dr.
00:23:53
Speaker 11: Neil.
00:23:54
Speaker 4: He did the surgery, which I think is amazing, but who freaking rehabbed?
00:23:57
Speaker 5: Oh, gotcha, okay.
00:23:59
Speaker 4: Like, who? Like, the surgery's amazing. Neil does a lot of those. He's amazing. That's why everyone goes to him. He's freaking amazing. So, no doubt, he had a head start from there, but who, from a standing start coming out of surgery, got him ready in nine months to go, you know, You blow it out. Like, what in the world? Like, find out who that was. Someone ask George. I need credit. I want to give somebody credit because that is, be honest with yourself. Usually, it always takes the second year in Achilles. You're never who you really can be in the first year, especially out of the gate. Like, come on. What is going on here? You know, we want to yell at everyone, oh, substation, everyone gets hurt. What about when they turn around magically to get healthy? We don't say, oh, way to go. To me, George, getting healthy like that is magic. I want, who's the sorcerer.
00:24:48
Speaker 2: That pulled that off?
00:24:49
Speaker 3: I need to know who that is.
00:24:51
Speaker 4: Dr.
00:24:51
Speaker 3: Stryker, he put the adamantium in Wolverine's bones. You know what I mean?
00:24:54
Speaker 4: Dr.
00:24:55
Speaker 1: Pollyanna.
00:24:55
Speaker 3: Exactly.
00:24:56
Speaker 4: Exactly. Because that is, I mean, with injuries, and if George wasn't at full speed, this thing doesn't happen. Right. It doesn't. Like, George at full speed made the difference. And so, you know, that's the kind of stuff. If we're going to rip people for getting hurt, we've got to rip, you know, we've got to cheer people who make us feel healthy. Yeah. Anyway, enough of that.
00:25:17
Speaker 6: Talk to the Hall of Famer, Steve Young, on the UMA guest line. What do you make of the way they've been using Christian McCaffrey this year? Because every offseason we talk about, they've got to kind of lower his touches a little bit. And this year, he's been great, obviously, but they're using him more in the fourth quarter. Just what do you make of the way that Kyle's been using Christian McCaffrey?
00:25:34
Speaker 4: You can tell he's careful. Keelan's helped. Like, we got help. You know, we need help out of the draft. We got it. And we got it in a number of places that we didn't, you know, And so that makes a huge difference. We're 6-0 in a lot of ways because of who showed up out of the draft. And so I appreciate what they've done to be able to make that so that he doesn't have to carry the load. We know that's just too much, and I appreciate that. And he's being smart. And by the way, let him explode December, January, and February. You know what I mean? Like, let's not push it.
00:26:08
Speaker 2: Good game.
00:26:08
Speaker 4: Good game.
00:26:10
Speaker 2: Good game.
00:26:10
Speaker 4: Good game.
00:26:11
Speaker 5: Good game.
00:26:12
Speaker 11: Good game.
00:26:13
Speaker 2: So without you, Steve?
00:26:14
Speaker 4: Good game. Good game. Good game. Good game.
00:26:16
Speaker 3: Hold on.
00:26:16
Speaker 4: Sorry, I'm shaking all the hands of the coach.
00:26:18
Speaker 3: Are you in a handshake line right now?
00:26:20
Speaker 4: Call me in the middle of a ball game. Yeah, no, I had to go. It was the handshake at the end of the game.
00:26:24
Speaker 5: No, I understand. I understand.
00:26:25
Speaker 2: Who won, Steve?
00:26:26
Speaker 11: Of course, man.
00:26:26
Speaker 3: Did you just pull it out?
00:26:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, we won 33-14. Oh, wow. Domination.
00:26:34
Speaker 3: That's why you were on the phone with us.
00:26:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
00:26:36
Speaker 3: Didn't have a two-minute break. It's a laugher, yeah.
00:26:38
Speaker 4: It was in hand. It was in hand. I like to take the call.
00:26:43
Speaker 5: If it was a nail-biter, hey, guys, next week, maybe.
00:26:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe next week we'll do the head team. Maybe after 7-0.
00:26:49
Speaker 4: 7-0. I'll wait for 7-0. If it was tight, it was 7-0.
00:26:52
Speaker 3: About a minute after, though, dude.
00:26:54
Speaker 2: Steve Young with us. Okay, so you've been on teams. You just mentioned it. There's going to be some dogfights. In 23, they had the best roster in football. You've been on teams that have won a championship, and you've been on teams that had championship talent maybe and didn't win it. What's the difference for people outside of that locker room when you've got the talent versus actually winning that Super Bowl?
00:27:13
Speaker 4: So in some ways, we've been six and five and won it. We've been 14 and two and won it. Like we've come from different places to do it. And in some ways, there's years where I remember 95 was a year when nobody was really great. You know, there's a lot of people just hanging around. And then you just got to go grab it. Just rip it out of the hands and take it. And this might be, it doesn't feel like somebody is like a juggernaut other than us. And so in that way, let's just play that out. It might be a year where, you know, there's not that Seattle like last year at the end of the season when they were like, they're just killers. So, like, we'll see. It happens differently, and you just got to be ready for any way that it does. And then also, you know playoff football, it takes key moments, key breaks, you know, a little bad half, like the second half of last week, all of a sudden you're out. And so we just got to, you know, you have to be super aware of that. But I just, to me, it's if, if, if, health, health, health, health. It's like that's, this season is, can we keep our superstars healthy? Because that's going to be the vital part of it.
00:28:22
Speaker 5: Talking to the Hall of Famer Steve Young on the UMA guest line.
00:28:24
Speaker 6: Kyle Shanahan was asked today, there was a moment during the game, I don't know if you picked up on this, where Kyle was trying to get the play out and then Brock's like, come on, Kyle, get it out already. And that happened a couple weeks ago with Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers. Did you have any interesting moments where the play caller was trying to get the call to you, whether it was Mike Holmgren or Mike Shanahan back in the day where you were a little frustrated that the call was going to end in the appropriate time?
00:28:46
Speaker 4: A thousand times. Maybe 2,000. Like, Like, you know, and you want it early. I don't want, don't, don't, don't belabor it. Like it's like pick something. And I've, I've told them all. I said, look, you, you, I'll give you, you got a clock. And the second you like the buzzer goes off, I don't care what you say. We're going to do something else. Like we're not going to, I want to give everybody a chance to get, I don't want to hustle in the huddle because you can't get a play call. And so I understand the frustration. Like I have a job to do, but you got a job to do too. Right. And be ahead of it. And that's why I love Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren because he's, as play callers, they were ahead of it. They, they had a, they had the second play before they had the first play. And I always loved that. So it didn't happen. I say 2000 times. It really didn't happen that often, but nobody should be patient with that. Like if you can't get a play call, then I got a couple in my box. I've had a couple in my pocket that I've been holding on to. I think about, and then like, let's, let's call that and call it a day, but I don't want to be rushed coming out of the huddle because, and that's why Aaron was so pissed, right? It's like, I don't, I have enough problems without being rushed out of the huddle and trying to beat the clock because you weren't ready for the next play. Like, like it wouldn't know, even on a big play, it changes the tips of the field. Like, be ready for that. Like, that's okay. And that's why, again, I go back to Mike and to Kyle, his son. They are amazing at preparing and ready for no matter what happens with two or three plays that they love. And that's why that's super unusual for Brock and Kyle.
00:30:14
Speaker 2: Well, and Kyle talked about it today, and he's like, it wasn't even about getting the play in fast. He was like, I think he couldn't hear it, and it gets cut off at 15, and so sometimes he hears half the play.
00:30:22
Speaker 3: Oh, that's a whole other problem. It's a whole different thing, yeah.
00:30:26
Speaker 4: It's a whole different... That's a whole other problem, because that's just gamesmanship, especially on the road. That was at home, so you can't blame anyone.
00:30:33
Speaker 2: Sure, right.
00:30:33
Speaker 4: But it would happen periodically where you're like, oh, our... coached the player headset went out.
00:30:39
Speaker 12: Oh really on third and eleven shocks me it's insane who would think that that's gonna think it happened who knew.
00:30:52
Speaker 4: That there's a big little gremlin underneath the stands pulling.
00:30:55
Speaker 10: The plug yeah i understand that too remaking.
00:30:59
Speaker 2: That movie too uh steve are you what you got halloween decorations up you got costumes what's going on dude We're getting ready.
00:31:05
Speaker 1: We're up.
00:31:05
Speaker 4: We're good. We're good. We're good. Okay. But it feels late. It feels rushed. It feels like I, I, I again say to you guys, I think Christmas and Thanksgiving should buy out Halloween. I just be done with it. Like, just, just stop. Like, let's just, why, why just buy it out? And, uh, there's gotta be a price and, uh, and just own the whole fall. That's what I say.
00:31:27
Speaker 11: All right.
00:31:27
Speaker 2: So we just start as soon as kids go back to school, and then we just kick it right into Thanksgiving time. Get the cornucopias.
00:31:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, just lock it in.
00:31:33
Speaker 3: I'm with that.
00:31:34
Speaker 4: I'm good with that. Cornucopia fall. Like a month and a half. Because Thanksgiving does not get its due.
00:31:41
Speaker 3: It doesn't get its due.
00:31:42
Speaker 4: Oh, I love it.
00:31:43
Speaker 3: It's my favorite.
00:31:44
Speaker 4: It doesn't get its due. September to November is Thanksgiving and a nice Christmas. We're good to go. There you go. There you go. Halloween. I mean, how about Disney starting to celebrate Halloween in June?
00:31:58
Speaker 2: Come on, dude.
00:31:58
Speaker 3: What are we doing?
00:31:59
Speaker 5: That sounds like Disney.
00:32:00
Speaker 3: It would be labored. Disney and writing. Disney and writing in Walgreens. They'll get you.
00:32:05
Speaker 1: Exactly.
00:32:05
Speaker 3: Second June rolls around, dude. Steve Young joins.
00:32:08
Speaker 2: Us each and every other week, but he'll join KMBR every week next Wednesday.
00:32:12
Speaker 5: Halloween week.
00:32:12
Speaker 2: With us and Marcus, dude. By the way, you're only going to get Steve in a handshake line on this show. It didn't happen at 8 a.m.
00:32:18
Speaker 3: Or whatever when he's out with the morning guys.
00:32:20
Speaker 4: Right? No way.
00:32:21
Speaker 3: Good game, coach.
00:32:22
Speaker 4: Good game, coach. Good game, coach. I love that.
00:32:24
Speaker 3: I love that. Steve, it's great to have you back, man.
00:32:27
Speaker 5: Pass it along.
00:32:27
Speaker 3: Been loving watching.
00:32:28
Speaker 2: You all over media, all over the beginning part of the season. We're happy to have you back. We'll do it again in a couple weeks, man. Thanks so much.
00:32:34
Speaker 4: Thank you, Steve. All right, boys. Great. See you.
00:32:37
Speaker 2: Good deal there from the Hall of Famer, number eight, the great Steve Young, dude. He's the best, man.
00:32:42
Speaker 4: Steve-er-een.
00:32:42
Speaker 3: He's a Steve-er-een. Dude, he's the best.
00:32:45
Speaker 5: I don't want to, like, steal the take from Tom. I'm like, what are we doing here, Steve?
00:32:48
Speaker 4: Come on, now.
00:32:48
Speaker 5: You have to celebrate Halloween.
00:32:50
Speaker 4: Come on.
00:32:50
Speaker 2: I don't, I mean, his whole thing is he's not huge on Halloween. I used to be bigger on Halloween.
00:32:56
Speaker 5: It's for the kids.
00:32:57
Speaker 3: It's more of a kids thing, I guess. It's for Danny.
00:33:00
Speaker 2: I was asking Derek about this yesterday, because Danny, as part of his double dips last week, asked us, like, what we thought he should be for Halloween.
00:33:06
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:33:07
Speaker 2: Was that last week or two weeks ago?
00:33:08
Speaker 5: That was two weeks ago.
00:33:09
Speaker 3: Did you dip with JD?
00:33:10
Speaker 5: We did not dip.
00:33:11
Speaker 4: Why not? You know.
00:33:13
Speaker 3: Danny, how come you didn't dip with JD?
00:33:14
Speaker 5: Saving the dips.
00:33:16
Speaker 2: I'm not sure who that really is a referendum on.
00:33:21
Speaker 3: What a very real way to answer that. Yeah, well said, Danny.
00:33:24
Speaker 5: You know, I thought that we should save the dips when you return.
00:33:28
Speaker 2: I think it's, yeah, okay. And you just said, okay, Dan, you just bent to Derek's will?
00:33:32
Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
00:33:34
Speaker 2: Just agreed. Anyway, Danny asked us.
00:33:36
Speaker 5: You know I love the dips.
00:33:37
Speaker 3: I know you do.
00:33:38
Speaker 5: And JD loves the dips. He used to dip back in the day.
00:33:40
Speaker 3: I don't know who this is a referendum on.
00:33:42
Speaker 5: It's probably on me.
00:33:43
Speaker 2: Danny asked a couple of weeks ago what we thought he should be for Halloween. I think he was just looking for ideas from us. Derek and I were walking out of the studio yesterday, or out of the station yesterday, and he said that Danny said that he had gone to Spirit or a Halloween store a couple of days in a row, and Danny, you hadn't found anything that you liked so far?
00:34:00
Speaker 11: No, there was like one or two things that I was considering, but I haven't really seen anything. I was thinking about going on Amazon, just getting something overnight.
00:34:07
Speaker 2: So what do you think? Because you've got 10 days, man. Are you a guy who's going to dress up on the day of? Is this about a party the night before? Are you coming to work in a costume?
00:34:15
Speaker 3: What's going on?
00:34:16
Speaker 2: I'm probably not going to come to work in a costume.
00:34:17
Speaker 5: Oh, come on now.
00:34:19
Speaker 2: I don't want to be the only one. Lee Hammer, you said that last year, but you came as George Costanza and you just look like you. Do you remember that day when he said, I'm George, and he just had like.
00:34:27
Speaker 3: A sweater on and glasses?
00:34:29
Speaker 5: No, I had a nice shirt. I had my glasses.
00:34:32
Speaker 2: I might not have been in that day.
00:34:33
Speaker 5: I didn't shave my head. It was looking like George Casanza.
00:34:36
Speaker 3: He came in in normal clothes, and then he said, I'm going to change into my costume.
00:34:39
Speaker 5: He came back like, I'm not going to be George Casanza all day.
00:34:41
Speaker 3: You just look like you're going to a wedding or something.
00:34:43
Speaker 4: I don't know.
00:34:43
Speaker 3: You weren't going to a baptism or something.
00:34:45
Speaker 5: Bottom line is, Dan, if you dress up, I'll dress up.
00:34:48
Speaker 2: I don't believe you, but all right.
00:34:50
Speaker 5: Why wouldn't you believe me?
00:34:51
Speaker 2: Are we saying we'd all agree to dress up next Friday the 30th?
00:34:54
Speaker 3: Is that right?
00:34:55
Speaker 2: Next Friday? A week from Friday?
00:34:56
Speaker 4: All right.
00:34:57
Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. I guess we're not getting Steve then on Halloween week.
00:34:59
Speaker 3: We won't on Halloween week.
00:35:00
Speaker 2: We just need to see. We'd have to decide on it. Would we do a group costume? The funniest thing is there's nobody else here really on Fridays but us.
00:35:07
Speaker 4: I know.
00:35:08
Speaker 6: So we'd just be dressing up for each other. Maybe we dress up as each other. We pick who's going to be who.
00:35:12
Speaker 3: Who's going to be me?
00:35:14
Speaker 5: I'll be you.
00:35:15
Speaker 2: You better do it right.
00:35:16
Speaker 5: And I'll pull it off right.
00:35:16
Speaker 3: You better do it right.
00:35:17
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:35:18
Speaker 11: Yeah.
00:35:18
Speaker 2: You're going to get the paint? You're going to get the makeup?
00:35:20
Speaker 5: I have to honor the man.
00:35:22
Speaker 2: The hair?
00:35:23
Speaker 3: Can you imagine?
00:35:24
Speaker 2: Derek gets axed from a radio show for doing something visual?
00:35:27
Speaker 4: Hey, come on.
00:35:27
Speaker 3: That'd be pretty good. That'd be pretty funny.
00:35:29
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:35:29
Speaker 2: I don't know.
00:35:30
Speaker 11: So, Danny, you don't have a costume yet, huh? I don't have a costume. I'm going to a party on an actual Halloween night. It's a Saturday this year.
00:35:35
Speaker 4: Nice.
00:35:36
Speaker 2: And I'm going. Trying to find your own little slutty pumpkin, huh? Like how I met your mother?
00:35:40
Speaker 4: Jesus. Right.
00:35:41
Speaker 3: That's what they call her, dude. Am I wrong?
00:35:42
Speaker 2: It's Katie Holmes.
00:35:43
Speaker 3: Am I right?
00:35:44
Speaker 4: That is.
00:35:44
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:35:45
Speaker 4: PhD, dude.
00:35:46
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:35:46
Speaker 4: Fair enough.
00:35:47
Speaker 2: There's also one Saturday, this coming Saturday, that I might go to. And this coming Friday, I might go to.
00:35:52
Speaker 4: Wow.
00:35:52
Speaker 3: You might need like three costumes. You're a popular guy.
00:35:54
Speaker 11: Would you go three costumes for that, dude? It depends how much they are. I don't want to spend 60 a costume.
00:35:59
Speaker 6: You can find like a nice clay face or Lydia on Amazon Prime.
00:36:02
Speaker 3: Stop with your $ 2, 000 costume.
00:36:04
Speaker 11: I know, dude.
00:36:04
Speaker 3: You're not even... Ask the guy who pulled a sweater out.
00:36:07
Speaker 2: Of his closet for his costume last year.
00:36:09
Speaker 5: I pulled it off well.
00:36:09
Speaker 3: No, you didn't.
00:36:10
Speaker 5: And this year, I'll pull it off well as copes.
00:36:12
Speaker 3: You're going to get dreads, dude? That'd be so good. If Derek rolls in here.
00:36:16
Speaker 5: If I wear the dreads, can I just be like, I'm the guy for The Matrix?
00:36:18
Speaker 4: Stop.
00:36:20
Speaker 2: What is it, like Link or something?
00:36:22
Speaker 5: It was like those two dudes.
00:36:23
Speaker 2: They're brothers.
00:36:23
Speaker 5: The twins, yeah.
00:36:24
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:36:25
Speaker 3: One dies in the front.
00:36:25
Speaker 5: Or some Charlize Theron from Fast and Furious.
00:36:28
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, dude. Or I could just get the gray dreads on. You'd be the dude who fights on the freeway in the second Matrix.
00:36:34
Speaker 5: Or I could be the porn star dread.
00:36:36
Speaker 8: Stop.
00:36:36
Speaker 4: Stop.
00:36:37
Speaker 2: You're already Johnny Sins, I thought.
00:36:38
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
00:36:39
Speaker 3: You should do that.
00:36:40
Speaker 5: I'll be Johnny Sins.
00:36:41
Speaker 3: Come in like some scrubs and say you're Johnny Sins.
00:36:42
Speaker 10: I'm Johnny Sins.
00:36:43
Speaker 4: Who are you?
00:36:44
Speaker 2: What do you think I am?
00:36:45
Speaker 3: Are you a nurse?
00:36:46
Speaker 4: Kinda.
00:36:46
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:36:50
Speaker 5: Are you a plumber?
00:36:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, that too, sort of.
00:36:52
Speaker 5: Steve-a-reen.
00:36:53
Speaker 2: Here to snake your train, yeah. Steve-a-reen joins us every other Wednesday. We will take a quick break. When we come back, by the way, 503 says, has Danny considered a Saddam Hussein mask? You can all pick your favorite dictator and be him for Halloween.
00:37:06
Speaker 5: Danny, what are you thinking?
00:37:08
Speaker 2: I think we're a little late here.
00:37:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, all right.
00:37:10
Speaker 3: We'll take a quick break. When we come on back, we'll get a little more. How about some more coach speak?
00:37:13
Speaker 4: Sure.
00:37:14
Speaker 2: We didn't finish it up. When NFL college coaches talk, we listen. Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Aaron Glenn, Shane Steichen, Kurt Cignetti, and Danny Hurley showing up in your coach speak.
00:37:23
Speaker 6: Hurley!
00:37:23
Speaker 11: Part two.
00:37:24
Speaker 3: We'll do it next on Esports Leader.
