Case Files — Dorothy Jane Scott. On the night of May 28, 1980, Dorothy Jane Scott, a 32-year-old Anaheim secretary and single mother, drove a sick coworker to the emergency room at UC Irvine Medical Center — and vanished from the parking lot when she went to bring her car around. Her white 1973 Toyota wagon sped past her coworkers with its headlights blinding them, and was found burning in a Santa Ana alley before dawn. For months she had been getting calls at work from a man who alternately professed his love and promised to kill her. On June 12, 1980, a man called the Santa Ana Register and said he had killed her — and he knew two details that had never been published: the black widow bite her coworker was treated for that night, and that she had changed her black scarf for a red one. Police believe that caller was her killer. Her partial remains were found off Santa Ana Canyon Road in August 1984 and identified by dental records; no cause of death could be established, and no one has ever been arrested. The Orange County Sheriff's Homicide Task Force still carries her case. If you have information, call the OC Sheriff Cold Case Homicide team at (714) 647-7055 — or report anonymously to OC Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS (855-847-6227). Her name was Dorothy Jane Scott.
