Disclaimer: This episode contains discussion of grief, suicide, and mental health. Please take care while listening. Being Dramatic is a podcast that attempts to reclaim big emotions and tries to unpack and question what it means to be a human with emotions. And who better to ask these questions of than the people who have access to all the emotions — as Goldie Hawn’s character in The First Wives Club would say — creatives. We also talk about what these people are working on and what keeps them going and creating, especially in today’s world.
My guest for this episode is Laura Anne Harris, performer and writer, presenting for the first time Have Fun Kids at the Next Stage Fringe Festival.
In the wake of the suicide of her friend and fellow theatre artist, Jordan Mechano, performer and playwright Laura Anne Harris (Destiny, USA; Pitch Blonde) discovered more than 700 pages of his writing. Have Fun Kids is the result — a raw, tender, and quietly radical solo show that blends Jordan’s text with Laura’s own stories of grief, memory, and the fragile act of remembering. 🎟️ To get tickets: https://fringetoronto.com/fringe/show/have-fun-kids
About the host: Alex Lean is a human with many creative interests, including writing, music, improvising, and staying alive. If you blinked, you may have missed any of her creative offerings, such as her play Witch or her musicals: Nobody's Idol (2013) and Ghosted: The Musical (2019). She improvised for years — way back when Comedy Bar was new — on a Harold team called Nakatomi Protocol. Since then, she has spent her time being “too much,” overly dramatic about her nervous system that causes her to feel... well... too much. C’est la vie. Is she an influencer? Ugh, you decide — but she does have these sponsored posts by the Playwrights Guild of Canada and Canadian Play Outlet where she reads plays and talks about them. 💸 To tip this episode: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/being-dramatic
