Joyce: Hey lovhers, welcome to the Book Lovhers Club, the podcast where we celebrate Black sapphic love stories one book at a time. I'm your host, Joy, a married lesbian, lifelong book lover and relational communication scholar. Here, we don't just read the romance, we learn from it. I believe that love stories can do more than just entertain us. They can teach us how to love better, how to see ourselves more clearly. and how to create the love life of our dreams. Each week, I'll dive into sapphic stories written for us and by us while weaving in personal insights and communication lessons you can take off the page. So grab your drink, get cozy and let's turn the page together. Welcome to the club.
Joy: Hey book lovers, welcome back to another episode of the Book Lovhers Club. And happy Sapphic September. Y'all, it is our time to shine. All right. I know I have been really looking forward to Sapphic September because my book festival is happening and is less than a month away. In fact, we're a few weeks out. And y'all, the closer that we get to the date, I am so excited. Yeah, I also have all the nerves, but I just trust that everything's going to come together and it is going to be a great magical experience because why wouldn't it be? It's always a good time when book lovers link up, okay? Especially black sapphic book lovers. And I can't wait. Especially because your girl is tired. Okay. I've been grinding. I've been hustling. And is twenty twenty wait, what what's the phrase? I don't know. But now that the time is here, I don't know if I should have hosted an event when the academic year is also starting. Because I am very busy at work and now I am very busy in my personal life. So your girl just been hustling, moving and shaking, moving and shaking. I cannot wait for things to die down and settle down. So, you know, but all of this just excitement in the air, it's just a good time to be alive. And I'm just so, so happy about all of the new developments that are happening in my life. So in case you missed it. Black Romance Book Fest announced their 2027 content creator class. And I can finally share the good news with y'all that I was selected to be a part of their content creator class. And I I'm still just trying to wrap my mind around it. Okay. When I tell you mind blown. mind blown. I'm just glad that I took a chance and, you know, really went to shoot my shot because it's easy to talk yourself out of things, but I come from the camp that we do not self-reject. Okay, we do not self-reject. So I made sure that I submitted my application and I did not know that I was gonna get selected. Mainly because there are a lot of book. Creators and book talk accounts and Bookstagrams where they have way more followers than I do. You know, but followers don't always equate to impact, influence, all the things, okay? That is a metric to measure success, but it's not the only metric. So I'm just really grateful that that's not something that they really kind of hold over your head. That you don't have like 10K followers plus, you know. But I didn't know if I was gonna get selected because I'm a smaller platform, but I was, and I'm excited, and I can't wait, and I can finally tell y'all because we had to be real quiet on a creek, okay? And I am a yapper, and I always find myself like you make sure you don't say this, you can't say anything, okay? So I'm excited, I will be in Atlanta. at Black Romance Book Fest as a content creator and I cannot wait. So this past year, y'all know I have been talking about BRBF for months. Okay, for months. I have multiple podcast episodes where I have talked about my experience at that festival. Okay. And look, everybody has their different approach to content. I like to yap On a mic on my podcast. That is how I put my content out there. Okay. I make some videos. I definitely dabble in the video content. I love my graphics. But the people who really want to hear my unfiltered thoughts, who really wanna follow my reviews and all of my things, they know to come and listen to my episodes. So if you're someone out there that wants to explore different formatting for how you put out your content. Don't sleep on podcasting, okay? Especially for people who don't necessarily want to just put out a lot of videos all the time. I put out my podcast episodes consistently. Every Saturday, y'all know y'all can expect me in front of this mic, yapping with y'all, okay? And, you know, it's a radio show. I have a radio show. In my head, I am like Martin from What's Up Radio. What's up? Okay. I'm like Martin. All right. I just yap about books around here. But I just know that there's other people out here that, you know, might not have thought that they were a content creator that might have not put themselves out there. And I'm just showing you I am a testament that, you know, never sleep on yourself. Never sleep on yourself. I'm just so grateful. I'm humbled, honored to have been selected. And I'm just so grateful for this opportunity. And I am in really good company, y'all. The entire content creator class, the moderators, everybody that was selected to help with this event. These are some badass women and men, they them, all types. Okay. These are some badass people. Some badass people. I follow a good chunk of the accounts. Okay. I was scrolling looking at everybody like, they got the best. You know, so I am in good company and I'm just glad to be a part of it, glad to be in the mix, okay? Glad to be seen, to be recognized. Like I said, I've been grinding and I've been hustling, and I am going to take this as a sign that I am moving in the right direction and that there is success waiting for me at the end of all this hustling. Okay. But I'm just grateful. And y'all know. I enjoyed my time at Black Romance Book Fest. I would not have traded that experience for the world. I really got my entire life and I am so excited to be able to go back in this capacity. So stay tuned for my content. You know, I am going to be hosting a meetup, a mixer at a lesbian bar in Atlanta. So MSR, my sister's room, they're going to be collaborating with me and allowing me to host a meetup there at their bar. I will have all of the details and information available on Eventbrite very shortly. But for all of my queer sapphic girlies that are going to be at Black Romance Book Fest, come kick it with your girl. Okay. So Thursday, June 10th, come and meet us at the bar. Turn up with me for a little bit before things get really hectic with the festival. All right, but that was something that I was really like seeking this year was a way to connect with the other gay girlies at the festival. So you know me, I am somebody that if I see that something is a need, I want to fill it. I am a problem solver, I am a fixer. So if I wanted to be in a space with other sapphic book girlies and I couldn't find that space, then I'm like, let me create it. And I am excited. So that's all I can't. I'm so excited. And I just can't hide it. Okay. I can't really sing, y'all. Just be rocking with me. Just just let me ride out with it, okay? Not too much on me and my lack of vocals. This is my pod, and I could do what I want, okay? But I'm very excited. I can't stop talking about it. I can't stop smiling. I have a permanent grin on my face. Because what? Your girl is a content creator for a book festival. That's one hell of a way to close out my one year of podcasting. Okay? All last month I was talking about how it's coming up on my one year anniversary of my podcast. And you know, this episode is not season two, okay? I wanted to announce to y'all today that actually season two will not be starting until October. I gotta get through this event, y'all. So I was supposed to drop an interview last month as a bonus episode. It is going to be releasing this month. So I'm gonna take a couple of weeks to just focus on the book lovhers fest. I actually don't have that many tasks left, but I don't wanna be overwhelmed and stressed going into that event. So season two will officially launch that first weekend in October. So October 3rd, that's Saturday. That will be the official kickoff of season two of the Book Lovhers Club. Right now, we're just wrapping up season one and getting through the book Lovhers fest. Okay, so today I just have some housekeeping things to talk to y'all about. Also, It's Sapphic September. I launched a challenge that I wanted to put on y'all's radar. And we're still reading. You know, this podcast is for book readers. This is a book club podcast, and we read books together every month. Also, if you are on the Fable, if you are a part of the book club that's on Fable, you would know that we have a September book pick. We also have a virtual book club meeting that is coming up this month. It is happening during the Book Lovhers Fest, but you do not need to have a ticket to attend the book club meeting. Okay. So we're reading. So I will preview the books that we are reading for the month of September. I actually announced the books that we were reading like a month ago. So people probably have already started working their way through these books, but I will be announcing those. And then, you know, the next couple of weeks, I will be dropping two author interviews. So, my interview, like I mentioned before, with Latoya Hankins, will be airing. And then I also have an interview with Naomi Rivers. They are a married couple that writes books together, and I was lucky enough to interview them. And they both are just so sweet. And they gave me such amazing marriage advice. Y'all. Okay, so I can't wait for y'all to hear that interview as well. But I am gonna take two weeks to just prioritize and focus on the book Lovhers Fest. So I will be dropping it's new to you content, but I've already done it. I will not be dropping any new content. For the next couple of weeks, just some author interviews. And then the last Saturday of this month, we will recap the Book Lovhers Fest because not everybody could attend. In case you missed it, the event is sold out. Okay. My very first event is sold out. I am so grateful for that. Thank you to everybody that supported me, that bought a ticket, that wants to be in that space, that wants to be a part of this inaugural event, because we will be having another. I'm still trying to figure out if the future events are going to be virtual or in person, but just know that we will be having more events coming up. All right. So thank you to everybody that's a part of the founding event. All right. And that have supported me. But yeah, we are doing things a little differently in September. Got a lot going on. So it'll be a just a different formatting this month, but then we will be back to our Regularly scheduled programming in October. So this month we'll conclude season one of the Book Lovhers Club, and then we will enter season two. I have some exciting things that I want to try on the horizon just to like switch things up, level things up in season two. So just stay tuned for two more author interviews, and then I will come back and give y'all all the tea on the book Lovhers fest. Because we have the inaugural Book Lovher Awards. So the voting has ended. And now it's just time to wait for the award ceremony to see who won Okay? We had so many votes that came in and I'm just so blown away by the support and the reception just the excitement that people had around finally getting their flowers and being recognized for their hard work. That was really nice to watch and experience in real time, you know? And I'm just really grateful that I could be like just a facilitator of this and someone just to help bring these things to light and create this space for these amazing authors and narrators and creators to be celebrated. Okay. I am all for creating our own opportunities and, you know. that's what it's gonna be. But y'all, it's just so much to celebrate. So much good is happening. And we really need to just be present in the moment and enjoy the good things while they're happening. Because good times don't last forever, you know, but when they are happening, I wanna experience it and I wanna be present in it. And right now there is a lot to celebrate Despite a lot of the negative things that are happening in the country, you know. And I keep talking about the weather, but I am a nature girly and I love being outside and just the weather anomalies. Now we have all these bugs in the city swarming and biting people up. You know, if anybody out here is looking for a remedy for bug bites, I am here to tell y'all that eucalyptus oil really does work. I've been getting my ass ate up by these flies and mosquitoes on my walks. And I tried eucalyptus oil because apparently it's a natural bug repellent. It really works. I put a little bit on my ankles, on all of my key parts that were like exposed and stuff like that on my walks. And nothing bit me. So if y'all looking for a bug repellent, try eucalyptus oil, okay? All right. Enough of that tangent. But yeah. Speaking of walking and being outside. Okay, so for Sapphic September, I have launched an audiobook walking challenge. So for those who've been following me for a while, the entire summer, I've been going for two to three mile walks every morning before work. I've been waking up early, going to get my walks in, and then heading into the office. These walks have really become a highlight of my summer and of my day. My mood has improved. I've been losing weight. So and I feel like this is just the easiest thing that I could do to help myself lose weight because I like walking and I like being outside. I like hiking and things like that. So this is a way for me to kind of tap into that a little bit in the city. I guess this would be called like urban hiking, but I've been averaging about two to three miles. Sometimes I'll do four or five. It just depends on how I'm feeling. But I've consistently been going for walks every day since June 1st. I have not missed a day. Even when it was storming. If the weather wasn't too bad, I was outside walking in the rain. In fact, I love to walk in the rain. It is so relaxing to me. I got a waterproof jacket, some waterproof boots and rain shoes and things like that. I'd be outside, okay? And then on the days where the weather was too bad, like when we had the wildfire smoke and the air quality was poor, I just went in the gym and did my walks in the gym. So either way, I've been knocking these miles down since June 1st. So I wanted to invite people in to walk with me, but pair it with our love of books. So for the month of September, I've been encouraging you all to join me on these walks. And listen to Black Sapphic audiobooks while we're walking. So I put the details for the challenge on social media. I also have more information available on my website, on my blog. I want to transition this into an actual walking book club where we listen to audiobooks. Maybe not the same audiobooks. Everybody can listen to their own audiobooks, but where it's this. Nice marriage between walking and reading, which is something that I need. I got a habit stack, okay? habit stacking has really been helping me get my things accomplished, okay? So the audiobooks have really just enhanced my walking experience, and it's also motivated me to increase my miles and read more books. So I got the idea because a couple of episodes ago I talked about the need for more Black Sapphic audiobooks and how I just really want more of them because I recently discovered that I love audiobooks and I've become addicted to them. But I was struggling to find a lot of black Sapphic options. So then that went and led me to go research what options are out there. And there are actually quite a few black Sapphic. Audiobooks available. So now that I know that, you know, yes, we still need more. There is a need. I was not wrong about that. We actually do need more black Sapphic books. However, until we get them, I want to listen to the ones that already exist. So this challenge is really inviting you all in to do that. Now I know not everybody can afford to buy the audiobooks. And there are a lot of people who don't want to support Audible and some of the audiobook platforms. But you know the library has audiobooks that you can access through the Libby app. So go get your library card and see what type of audiobooks you can get from the library. If you're not able to find the audiobooks through the library, let them know. Let the librarians know that these are the type of books that you want them to have on their shelves. So that they can go and get them. This is how we get these books in the libraries is to communicate that there's a need for it. So I really encourage you all to join the challenge. It's different, goals depending on how much you want to walk. So this challenge will run from September 1st through September 30th. Okay, so I call them Lovher levels. so the first Lovher level is Lovher Girl. So that's if you want to walk 30 miles throughout the month and listen to one audiobook. Okay? And this is every time you go for that walk, you press play and listen to your audiobook while you get your walk done. Okay, the next level is. True Lovher. So true Lovher is if you want to do about a mile and a half a day for 30 days. So that's a 45-mile goal for the month of September. And that's two audiobooks. The next Lovher level is certified Lovher. That's the one that I am trying to do. That is averaging two miles a day. So two miles a day, that gets you 60 miles. In the month of September, and that's three audiobooks. And I'm already on track for the audiobooks, okay? I just finished my second one. So I've listened to Sweet Like Honey by Aricka Alexander. And then now I just finished Choices by Skyy. Both books are really good as audiobooks, okay? I highly recommend them. In fact, listening to those spicy scenes while I was outside walking was giving me life, okay. So, you know, if you're looking for something to read to get you started, I can highly recommend both of those. So that's Sweet Like Honey by Aricka Alexander and then Choices by Skye. Choices is actually an older book. That is a book that I read when I first came out. And you know how sometimes you watch movies or TV shows or read books a long time ago when you were younger, and then you try to listen to them or engage in them again once you're older. They're kind of cringy. And they don't hold up. That was not choices, y'all. I read that book a long time ago and got my entire life. In fact, that entire series is superior. I love it so much. And the OG Black Sapphic book girlies, they know about the Choices series, and y'all know that that series is so damn good. Y'all, the audiobook is given. It really is still superior. Okay. Listening to it on the audiobook has just really reignited the love that I have for that series. And now I'm about to read book two. So the first two books in the series, so Choices and Consequences, they are available on the audiobook. The other books are not. she has another book that I really love called Southern Comfort. That book is also available on audiobook too. So I am planning to read those, okay. But I'm also preparing for our September book club meeting, which has happened virtually during the Book Lovhers Fest in collaboration with Karmen Lee. So I'm gonna take a pause on the Skyy Books. I just started the 7-10 Split by Karmen Lee because we're gonna be discussing her Peach Blossom series. So that's my next read. I've actually already started it. So I will be listening to the 7-10 split. the relationship mechanic and Secret Crush Book Club, which is our official September book pick. So that's the book that's being read by the group on Fable. you know, when I designated Secret Crush Book Club as the September book pick, I didn't think that they might be people out there who haven't read books one and two in the Peach Blossom series. So please do your due diligence. Go and read the first two books, but These books also work as standalones. You don't necessarily need to have read the other books in the series to be able to follow the book. But, you know, to each their own, do what you gotta do. But the official September book pick for this pod and everything is the Secret Crush Book Club. But I'm gonna be just refreshing myself on the entire Peach Blossom series so that when I go to the meeting with Karmen Lee, I can ask her the good questions, okay? Because I Why Ava, why she act like that? You know, that's all. I just got questions. So anyway, anyway, But I'm excited. I'm excited. So I've been listening to these audiobooks, but back to the the challenge. You see how I go on a tangent, y'all? I don't mean to do it, okay? I'm just a yapper. But we were talking about the different Lovher levels with the audiobook walking challenge. So we talked about Lovher Girl, which is a goal of 30 miles for the month of September. That's a mile per day, and listening to one audiobook. The next goal that you could achieve is true Lovher. That's one and a half miles a day. Or 45 miles throughout the month of September, and two audiobooks. The level that I am trying to achieve, my goal for the month is certified Lovher, which is 60 miles in the month of September, which is an average of two miles per day, and three audiobooks. All right, and then the ultimate level, the highest level that you could achieve. Okay, and some people might actually be surpassing this. We got some people out there that run marathons, okay? This is light work, but that is an average of three miles per day, and that's 90 miles throughout the month of September or 90 miles plus, and that's super Lovher, okay? That's my super Lovher girls. You are super. You got that S on your chest, baby. If you hit 90 miles plus Throughout the month of September. And that might be light work, like I said, for some people who are constantly running four, five, six, seven miles a day. Okay. So whatever your goals are, at the end of the day, I just want you to lace up, press play, and lace up. Listen to some black sapphic audiobooks and get some steps and walk with me. You know, the reason why I wanted to do this is that. You know, Sapphic September is a time where the book content girlies are really promoting the Sapphic books, really amplifying Sapphic books. But it is not uncommon for people's book posts, their book recs to not include any black Sapphic books or authors. So I wanted to continue to use my platform. To amplify black Sapphic stories. And also, I am just in my wellness era. I'm trying to get my steps in. I'm trying to walk more. And I think that that's something we all should be trying to do. So this allows me to merge both of those interests to promote wellness, to center wellness, and also promote our love of black Sapphic books. So if you are somebody that values that who wants to take part. If you go to my blog, I have a form that you can fill out. You can sign up for the Walking Club, the Audiobook Walking Club, and receive a free book journal. I created a tracker and book journal for you to track the audiobooks that you're listening to throughout this challenge and just how many steps you're getting and how many miles you're walking. So If you are participating, please the hashtag on social media, Book Lovhers Walk Club, or tag me in your post because those who are participating, you will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a free Black Sapphic book at the end of challenge. So I am keeping track. I have a document. Every time somebody tags me in something, I add your name to my list. Okay. And then at the end, I am going to Do a little raffle, take your name out the hat, and you could possibly win this free book. So, this entire month, like I'm gonna be giving away free black Sapphic books at the Book Lovhers Fest. I'm gonna be giving away free black Sapphic books at the conclusion of this challenge because it's Sapphic September, and we need to be promoting the Black Sapphic voices and amplifying their stories, okay? And I'm not the only person. There are authors that are doing challenges and just also trying to use their platforms to encourage people to read more black Sapphic books during Sapphic September. So D.O. Robinson, she's one of my favorite authors. she created a bingo challenge for Sapphic September called Sapphic September in Black. So I am also participating in her bingo challenge. So, you know, I like to read multiple books and read in multiple formats. I haven't been able to read as much. So I am a little bit behind on some of my arcs. And it's just because the festival is coming up and I'm just a little bit more busy. I'm busier than what I would usually be. You know, that's why the audiobooks are just so helpful because I can listen to them while I'm working on my task on my computer. You know, while I'm walking. Sometimes, if depending on what I'm doing at work, I can listen to my audiobooks while I'm at my desk. It just makes it a lot more accessible for some of us who have just like a busier schedule. I can't always sit down and be holding my Kindle. I will be getting reacquainted with her. I'm telling y'all, as soon as this event is over, baby, me and Miss Kindalisha got some catching up to do. Me and Miss Kindalisha and Kendeezy. We got some catching up to do. Okay. And some books to read. But until then, these audiobooks are really allowing me to still digest stories and be able to be productive in this way. So, you know, this challenge is for us, y'all, my audiobook girlies. And it's quite a few. If you go to the post where I announced the challenge, I put, you know, a lot of book rec on that post and just gave you all recommendations on some of the black sapphic audiobooks that are out there if you can't find a book that you want to listen to please let me know because I got all the recommendations all of them it's so many options available for you if you want to listen to young adult there's some on there fantasy some available Okay, so just let me know if you need help finding an audiobook to listen to for the challenge. I got you. All right. So the best way to participate is to choose your goal. Choose your Lovher level goal. So are you aiming for Lovher girl, true Lovher, certified Lovher, or super Lovher? And then track your progress. Like I said, so at the end. When it's time for these prizes and stuff, you can show, like, look, I got my 60 miles. I hit my goal. Okay. So join me. All I want you to do is lace up and press play. And let's celebrate these black sapphic stories one step at a time. But between the Black Sapphic Audiobook Walking Challenge and the Black Romance Book Fest content creator announcements, I've been having a really good start to the month. September is already off to an amazing start. And I just feel tremendously blessed. Well, before I leave y'all, I want to make sure I preview the books that we're reading for September. So this month, we are reading the Peach Blossom series. And preparing for the book discussion with Karmen Lee. If you do not have a ticket to the Book Lovhers Fest and you would like to attend the book club meeting, please make sure you are subscribed to my newsletter. I have literally put the information for the book club meeting in the newsletter every issue. When But we are reading the Peach Blossom series, which is a three-book series. The books are The 7-10 Split, The Relationship Mechanic, and The Secret Crush Book Club. The fourth book in the series called The Fall Fix Up, that book comes out on October 27th. You don't have to read all of the books in the series to come to the meeting and to yap with us about these books. Read one or read them all. It is your choice. Okay? The book that we're reading for the month, the book club pick is Secret Crush Book Club. All right, but I will be reading all three. I am not going to be discussing these books on air. If you want to hear my thoughts about these books, you will need to be at that book club meeting. All right. The next couple of episodes, like I mentioned, are gonna be author interviews, and then I will be taking a small hiatus so that I could prepare for this event. And prepare for season two. So y'all are still gonna be getting fed. I will still have be having this content coming out, okay? But I will not be discussing these books on air with you. But I still want to preview the books so that you all know what we're reading and that you can read them with us, read along. Okay. So this is the book description for the 7-10 split. This is how love rolls. For teacher Ava Williams, some subjects are not up for debate, like history. Specifically the one she has with Grace Jones, bowling pro and local celeb, who is now, for no identifiable reason, teaching at the same small town Georgia High School as Ava. Once upon a time they were thick as thieves, best friends, rivals who pushed each other, and total bowling nerds. Then they shared a kiss, sweet and confusing, and after that they split and nothing was ever the same. Ava is pretty sure she has every reason to hate Grace, especially when the school's soggy potato of a principal announces, finally, that the students can have the bowling team Ava has been pushing for for years only to hand it to Grace. Now they're expected to be partners and lead their new bowling team to victory in six months. And with that, their rivalry is back. Fierce, ultra competitive, and with an undeniable attraction that pushes, pulls, and crashes together. It's history, it's chemistry, and it's just a matter of time before it explodes, one way or the other. Just love the idea of this competitive bowling team and this workplace romance, you know, it's rivals to lovers, all of it. I'm here for all of that. right, and the next book in the series is The Relationship Mechanic. And this is the description on Goodreads. Jessica Jae-un Miller came to Peach Blossom, Georgia for a visit, not a breakdown. But when her rental car dies on the outskirts of town, mechanic Lavinia Vinny Williams provides a tow and a very welcome jump start to Jessica's heart. It's been a minute since Jessica's last fling, her relationship specialty, and Vinny checks all the right boxes. If only the sexy car whisperer seemed interested, Vinnie knows herself and what she wants. She loves her job, her family, her hometown, but she loved to fall in love. Jessica stirs up all the right feelings, but the city girl has no intention of staying in Peach Blossom. Why sign up for a broken heart? But the temptation is real as Vinny goes out of her way to drive a carless Jessica around town. The pair can't seem to keep their distance or their hands to themselves. With only six weeks to figure out where their red-hot chemistry might lead, Vinny and Jessica will have to decide if home can be where the heart is, when the heart only knows how to run. Ooh, that sounds real spicy. And I'm acting like I didn't read these books. I did. And I love the 7-10 split and the relationship mechanic. and for those of you who are listening to the audiobook, there is a two-for-one deal on those. You can get both the 7-10 split and the relationship mechanic for the price of one credit on Audible. And I think that deal is on other audiobook platforms. So check it out. Okay. Alright, and the third book in the series is the Secret Crush Book Club, and this is the book description. Nothing cures a lonely heart quite like a good book and an unexpected crush. For Danny, life is a juggling act. As a single mom devoted to her son and family, she barely has a moment to herself. But when her sister announces she's moving out of the house, the ache of loneliness creeps in, and Danny can't help but wonder if there's something else she's been missing in her life. Zoe came to Peach Blossom eager to start her new job as the town's librarian and do a little research for her next book. Yet she never expected to find inspiration in fellow book club member Danny, whose captivating brown eyes tell a story of their own. Before they know it, lingering glances over their favorite fiction turn into first dates and sizzling nights. As their connection deepens, the two women must decide if they should turn the page on what their lives used to look like, or if this thrilling plot twists the happily ever after they've been chasing all along. that just sounds so sweet. Sounds so sweet. And you know I love a book about books and book lovers and book clubs and librarians. I'm here for it.
