00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:13.599
Well, good morning, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to help get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.839 --> 00:00:24.399
I'm Greg Greed, life coach up in uh Indiana for Merrill Bros, Inc., and joined by my uh ever-popular and travel-weary co-host, Brian Hertzog.
00:00:24.559 --> 00:00:25.839
Brian, welcome back.
00:00:26.079 --> 00:00:26.480
Thank you.
00:00:26.719 --> 00:00:28.239
So, what have you been doing, man?
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.359
I'm traveling to New Orleans, having a great time.
00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:32.000
Okay.
00:00:32.880 --> 00:00:33.840
Walking a lot.
00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:38.640
I was gonna say, those trade shows are massive amount of concrete jungle, aren't they?
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:45.039
You literally cannot see, like when you stand in front of the the convention center in New Orleans, you can't see the corners.
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:48.719
Like you just go for on and on and on.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:52.079
And where our hotel is, you can't see where we set up.
00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:53.520
Like it's clear on the other end.
00:00:53.600 --> 00:00:54.880
So we did a lot of walking.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:55.359
Okay.
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:57.679
And then we have uh a great team still there.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:04.239
Uh they'll be there through uh Thursday, a lot of them through Thursday for teardown and um shipping.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:05.920
So is this like the largest?
00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:17.920
Yeah, WebTech is the largest water show in the world in um thousands and thousands and thousands of displays and more thousands of people walking around.
00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:24.239
So it's a great opportunity to have great conversations with folks and just to get our name out there.
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:24.640
Yeah.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:32.799
So we have our leadership team and a number of others there talking to people and and mixing it up and uh having good conversations, hopefully.
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:33.760
Hopefully, yeah.
00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:34.000
Okay.
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:34.799
That's what it's all about.
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:40.239
That's right.
00:01:40.400 --> 00:01:41.680
That would be uh that'd be great.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:49.439
Well, thanks to to you and your team for all the work that you did and creating a really cool um display.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:50.560
Is it display?
00:01:50.719 --> 00:01:51.439
Is that what you call it?
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:52.640
Uh okay, yeah.
00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:53.280
Set up.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:54.159
Set up, yeah.
00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:54.719
Okay.
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:56.480
It's uh exhibit setup.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:01:57.599
It it was really cool.
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:08.560
We um did a lot of thinking and um designing, and there was a lot of prayer into the crates that we shipped that because sometimes they get destroyed and we're gonna be able to do that.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:10.240
Foam letters.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:12.960
Sometimes you get there and then not much left of the crate.
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:13.439
Yeah.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.639
But we got there and everything was great, and we're like, thank you, Lord.
00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:19.360
So yeah, uh, yeah, it was it was fun.
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:20.319
Yeah, good setup.
00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:21.680
Well, good, good.
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:36.240
Well, hey, all this quarter we've uh been talking about becoming someone others want to follow, not simply because it's a position uh or a title, but because of uh character and trust and presence and care.
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:52.560
And so I wanted us to look at a at a passage this uh this morning where someone that really had a title, someone that had all the authority, someone that had uh the name, but yet decided to take it to a whole new level.
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:57.039
So I want us to look at a uh very familiar passage in the book of John.
00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:09.919
It's actually a meal, and it's not just any meal, but it's Jesus' final meal with the 12 who have been with him for probably three and a half years, and it even includes Judas.
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:12.960
And so there's uh it's a very unique meal.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:28.879
It's Passover, so it's uh it's one of the uh it's the biggest celebration of the year for Jewish people because they're reminded of what happened in the Old Testament when the death angel passed over them and they were released from bondage in Egypt.
00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:36.960
So I'll have you read verses three, four, and five that uh tell us, and I'll probably uh stop you along the way.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:46.080
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God, and was returning to God.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:52.400
So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:02.159
After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:07.919
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:14.159
And Jesus replied, You do not realize what I am doing, but later you will understand.
00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:17.920
No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet.
00:04:18.079 --> 00:04:23.199
And Jesus answered, Unless I wash your feet, you have no part with me.
00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:24.959
Let's stop there.
00:04:25.759 --> 00:04:30.079
So Jesus wasn't serving because he lacked authority.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:34.160
He wasn't serving from a position of insecurity.
00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:51.680
He was secure and understanding who he was, and then the person with all the authority in the room gets up from the meal, takes off his outer clothing, wraps a towel around his waist, pours water into a basin, and begins washing his disciples' feet.
00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:59.839
I was going to ask you, have you ever participated in a foot washing service just as a part of your faith tradition?
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.040
Yeah, a couple times.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:01.600
Okay.
00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:02.399
It's a powerful.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:03.759
It really is.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:12.800
You know, for me, and I don't know uh how it how it got you, but it wasn't hard at all to wash somebody else's feet.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:24.879
What was hard was to, in a sense, let someone I mean, I could have done the foot washing for everybody and gone home, but but to have people wash my feet, that really changed it for me.
00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:27.759
I don't know about you, what your experience was.
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:29.040
About the same.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:29.519
Okay.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:29.920
Yeah.
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:30.319
Yeah.
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:30.720
Yeah.
00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:37.839
You thinking about washing someone's feet, you know, like those who might be listening, like, why would you ever do that?
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:38.879
Why would you do that?
00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:39.279
Yeah.
00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:40.959
That is the weirdest thing ever.
00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:41.439
Yeah.
00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:45.199
Um, but remember in those days, like they had they wore sandals.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:45.600
Yeah.
00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:45.839
Right.
00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:49.120
And their feet were really dirty, dusty roads all the time.
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:49.759
Right.
00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:54.399
Um, they would come in and and have to wash their feet before they entered a home.
00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:59.199
Um, and so for this, like typically a servant would wash their feet.
00:05:59.439 --> 00:05:59.519
Yeah.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:04.319
So that I wanted to put that in context of why Jesus got down to wash their feet.
00:06:04.560 --> 00:06:06.480
Because no one, no servant did it, right?
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:06.800
Right.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:08.959
And everybody else thought they were above that.
00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:15.920
And the person that had all the title, all the authority, uh, all the power, he's the one that ends up washing it.
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:16.480
Yeah.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:17.040
Yeah.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:31.199
And I think that uh uh if you read uh I think it's um verse 15, kind of uh it's not just about, hey, let's find water and get a towel and go around washing everybody's feet.
00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:33.920
Uh I don't think it was literally that.
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:39.920
Uh it's fine to do it, it's fine, it's a great tradition, but it was about something more than that.
00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:46.399
Uh Jesus says, I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:54.399
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:59.519
Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:06.079
So it's likely, isn't it, that he's talking about more than just doing a foot washing service.
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:11.920
He's talking about how do we kind of figuratively pick up a towel and serve.
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:16.240
In other words, it's not about a title, it's more about a towel.
00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:24.319
And so if you if you manage people, you know, serving may mean doing something you could easily tell someone else to do.
00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:30.560
If you work beside others, it may mean stepping in when a co-worker is overloaded.
00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:36.959
And at home, it may mean doing the thing that you keep waiting for someone else to do.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:41.519
Um, so Jesus doesn't tell us to tell us what greatness looks like.
00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:44.639
He got down on his knees and he showed it.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:52.160
So this uh this week we're looking at this whole idea of uh you know picking up the towel.
00:07:52.319 --> 00:08:04.639
That's really our um that's kind of our focus this week is to do one thing for someone that's uh not necessarily uh your responsibility.
00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:07.360
It's unlikely to get any recognition.
00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:16.480
It's someone that you think normally they would be serving you, but you don't announce it, you don't post it, you don't keep score, you simply serve.
00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:24.000
And so I guess we're asking each morning this week to say, hey, where can I pick up the towel today?
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:32.960
Uh how do I go about doing something today that is an act of service as a way to say, hey, Jesus, I get it.
00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:35.919
I get what this last meal was all about.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:41.679
I get what it means to pick up a towel, and I'm looking for a way today to serve.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:45.120
You know, we've been talking about becoming someone others can trust.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:53.679
We've talked about noticing people, about knowing people, we've talked about caring for people, and then about serving people.
00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:57.279
So that's the the towel challenge, if you will.
00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:04.399
Uh, it's not expected of you, it's outside your responsibility, and it's unlikely to be noticed.
00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:09.200
Um you you got to do that really all weekend, didn't you?
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:20.320
I mean, you had an opportunity to serve our team kind of behind the scenes and have all that set up so then when our team comes in, it's all set up and it's all prepared and it's all ready to go.
00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:23.600
And it wasn't fanfare, hey, this is all about Brian.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:24.480
It wasn't that at all.
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:30.320
It's just you were willing to go down and take time away from your family and serve.
00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:32.399
And so we on my birthday.
00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:34.000
On your birth I know.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:35.120
Yeah, how's that?
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:38.960
That's that's a not that it's about me.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:41.519
Not that it's about me, but I loved it, man.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:42.720
Yeah, I enjoyed it.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.559
I I got to serve with others too.
00:09:44.799 --> 00:09:55.440
I know that were about it wasn't just you, just you have a great team, and I was so excited to go down there and do that and get that set up with them and figure things out, and it was a lot of fun.
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:55.840
Yeah.
00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.080
I also want to challenge you.
00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:05.279
There are a lot of things that that we talk about, especially if you're a part of a church, you're like, I wish our church would do this.
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:07.440
Well, yeah, that's good.
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:08.639
Pick up your towel.
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:09.120
That's do.
00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:09.679
That's right.
00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:10.080
Yeah.
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:10.799
And do it.
00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:11.120
Yeah.
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:15.759
Start that thing that you've always wished the church would your church would have done.
00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:20.080
Um, that could be the Holy Spirit talking to you, giving you that nudge, yeah.
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:21.200
Saying, Let's go.
00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:25.120
I like if I put this on your heart, uh step into it.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:28.559
Take that step of faith and let's let's make this happen.
00:10:28.720 --> 00:10:32.480
Don't just wait on others to jump in and and serve.
00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:34.080
You go do it.
00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:34.639
Yeah.
00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:39.440
You know, as a pastor, I had a lot of people with the gift of complaining.
00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:44.559
And I don't think it's a spiritual gift, but it's like, why don't you exactly what you're saying?
00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:45.360
Why don't you do this?
00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:46.240
Why don't you do that?
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.919
And and so I learned to say, well, hey, how could you help lead that?
00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:51.519
How could you help us to do that?
00:10:51.679 --> 00:11:11.919
If that's if that's on your heart, then it may not be on somebody else's heart, but if you would like to do that, maybe it was a food ministry, it was a clothing ministry, whatever it was, it's like, well, hey, give some time and thought and energy to say, well, if you were going to do that, how how would you lead our church in making that happen?
00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:24.960
So that's that's an excellent uh um side note to say it's not just about at work, it can be at home or it can be in a local church for those of you that are a part of a church.
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:29.759
Um so maybe the final question isn't am I a leader?
00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:37.600
It's am I becoming the kind of person that others can trust enough to follow by how I serve.
00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:49.039
Well, Brian, you didn't have an opportunity to be a part of our prayer time uh yesterday.
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:54.960
We missed you for that, but we did pray for the for the trade show and all that's happening down in New Orleans.
00:11:55.120 --> 00:12:02.639
Um, but there just were a number of things that we recognized uh that are going on uh with with our people.
00:12:02.879 --> 00:12:06.799
And so maybe you're listening to this podcast and you say, hey, I'm I'm one of those.
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:10.879
I wasn't at your meeting yesterday, but I've got a lot going on as well.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:23.360
And so we want to pray for you and Brian remind them of of how they get a hold of us and how we can be engaged in what they're going through so we can join them and help them to help carry the burden.
00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:30.799
Yeah, just go to Merlbros, M-E-R-R-E-L-L-B-R-O-S dot com and there's a prayer tab at the top of that page.
00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:36.399
Just click on that prayer tab, fill out that contact form, and uh we'll pray for you or get in touch with you.
00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:38.080
Okay, that'd be great.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:42.879
So we'll uh uh I think uh let me pray since you were already down there.
00:12:42.960 --> 00:13:01.039
Let me pray for the trade show and all the um the connections that are made from that, and then I'll just have you pray for for our team and for the people that are listening that are maybe going through something right now, and uh also have you include this idea that we this week we're gonna pick up the towel.
00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:01.759
How about that?
00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:02.559
Perfect.
00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:21.519
Okay, Father, I just give you thanks for uh the opportunity we have as a company to showcase um what it is that uh is possible with uh some of the many solutions that we have to the issues that people are dealing with in the wastewater world.
00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:38.080
And so I just pray for great conversations, even this morning, uh this afternoon, tomorrow, pray for all week that uh there'll be great conversations, people will be asking questions, and that uh we'll be able to say, hey, what if you had this issue?
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:40.320
How could we solve that as a company?
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:45.120
And we have so many solutions uh to the issues that people are struggling with.
00:13:45.200 --> 00:14:02.799
So we just pray that there'll be great uh opportunities that will come from this, there'll be some uh work that will come out of this, there'll be maybe a new uh sanitation uh um pelletizing facility that will result uh from these conversations.
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:15.279
There'll be communities that say we desperately need uh Merrill Bros to be a part of what's what our solutions are for uh the sanitation uh struggles that we're having, and that we get to be a part of that.
00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:27.759
So we're uh just so grateful for um for our marketing team and all that they did in preparing for that, all the people that were part of setting up and tearing down the people that will be there from our company.
00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:36.159
Uh we pray for safety for all of them as they go back and forth and for uh uh supernatural conversations all this week.
00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:38.720
So we're grateful for all of that in Jesus' name.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:45.360
Father, first and foremost, I just want to thank you for hearing our prayers.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:46.159
Amen.
00:14:46.799 --> 00:14:51.039
All throughout scripture it says you heard you heard the cries of your people.
00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:56.559
And so we have a lot of folks going through some pretty major things right now.
00:14:56.799 --> 00:15:04.399
Even uh some of our listeners are are thinking right now, I'm I'm really going through it, and I just need someone to listen.
00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:06.960
And I don't know what to do.
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:20.480
And God, I just pray that they would take this opportunity to just stop and pray to you right now for the things that they're struggling with, the things that are happening in their lives that they feel like they have no where or no one to turn to.
00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:22.559
God, but you're always there listening.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:27.039
And I pray that they would just stop and just pray to you right now, just as we are today.
00:15:27.200 --> 00:15:36.480
I pray for those in our our company that uh this morning and throughout this past week that have um asked for prayer for things that they're going through.
00:15:36.720 --> 00:15:45.600
God, you know who they are, you know the situations, and so we're just praying that you continue to uh just answer those prayers for them.
00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:48.000
We thank you for all the prayers that you have answered.
00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:56.639
It was very evident this past week that you answered prayer specifically for one of our drivers as he was driving, and so we're just so thankful for that.
00:15:56.720 --> 00:15:56.960
Uh-huh.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:17.279
God, and we just thank you that you have given us an opportunity here to serve others, and we can put on that towel, and your son just led by example, and that he had the most authority anyone on earth has ever had, and he yet he put on a towel to wash his disciples' feet.
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:23.519
And I pray that we would take those opportunities this week to put on that towel and serve others.
00:16:23.919 --> 00:16:39.759
We pray all the time that you would just help us in situations or that we would have opportunities to do certain things, or we always pray that um someone else would do something to help, and uh you have given us the the means to do that.
00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:47.759
And so I pray that we would uh listen to the Holy Spirit's push on our lives and uh just pick up that tau and serve.
00:16:48.240 --> 00:16:50.480
It doesn't have to be a huge thing either, God.
00:16:50.559 --> 00:16:52.000
It can be something small.
00:16:52.399 --> 00:16:55.039
Uh you continually put things in front of us.
00:16:55.519 --> 00:17:00.320
Uh I pray that we would just answer that call and do and serve.
00:17:00.799 --> 00:17:03.279
Thank you, God, for how you provide for us each day.
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:07.359
Thank you for listening to our prayers and answering.
00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:09.519
Pray all this in your son's name.
00:17:09.759 --> 00:17:10.240
Amen.
00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:10.880
Amen.
00:17:11.039 --> 00:17:11.680
Amen.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:14.000
Well, we'd love to pray for you as well.
00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:22.960
So make sure you go to Merrillbrose.com, click the prayer tab at the top of the page, and uh that will give us an opportunity to join you in praying.
00:17:23.680 --> 00:17:27.200
Again, thanks for joining us for another episode of Solid Start.
00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:33.599
Keep growing, keep encouraging, and keep making a difference by picking up the towel of serving.
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:35.759
Have a great day.
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:13.599
Well, good morning, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to help get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:13.839 --> 00:00:24.399
I'm Greg Greed, life coach up in uh Indiana for Merrill Bros, Inc., and joined by my uh ever-popular and travel-weary co-host, Brian Hertzog.
00:00:24.559 --> 00:00:25.839
Brian, welcome back.
00:00:26.079 --> 00:00:26.480
Thank you.
00:00:26.719 --> 00:00:28.239
So, what have you been doing, man?
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.359
I'm traveling to New Orleans, having a great time.
00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:32.000
Okay.
00:00:32.880 --> 00:00:33.840
Walking a lot.
00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:38.640
I was gonna say, those trade shows are massive amount of concrete jungle, aren't they?
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:45.039
You literally cannot see, like when you stand in front of the the convention center in New Orleans, you can't see the corners.
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:48.719
Like you just go for on and on and on.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:52.079
And where our hotel is, you can't see where we set up.
00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:53.520
Like it's clear on the other end.
00:00:53.600 --> 00:00:54.880
So we did a lot of walking.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:55.359
Okay.
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:57.679
And then we have uh a great team still there.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:04.239
Uh they'll be there through uh Thursday, a lot of them through Thursday for teardown and um shipping.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:05.920
So is this like the largest?
00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:17.920
Yeah, WebTech is the largest water show in the world in um thousands and thousands and thousands of displays and more thousands of people walking around.
00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:24.239
So it's a great opportunity to have great conversations with folks and just to get our name out there.
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:24.640
Yeah.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:32.799
So we have our leadership team and a number of others there talking to people and and mixing it up and uh having good conversations, hopefully.
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:33.760
Hopefully, yeah.
00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:34.000
Okay.
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:34.799
That's what it's all about.
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:40.239
That's right.
00:01:40.400 --> 00:01:41.680
That would be uh that'd be great.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:49.439
Well, thanks to to you and your team for all the work that you did and creating a really cool um display.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:50.560
Is it display?
00:01:50.719 --> 00:01:51.439
Is that what you call it?
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:52.640
Uh okay, yeah.
00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:53.280
Set up.
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:54.159
Set up, yeah.
00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:54.719
Okay.
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:56.480
It's uh exhibit setup.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:01:57.599
It it was really cool.
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:08.560
We um did a lot of thinking and um designing, and there was a lot of prayer into the crates that we shipped that because sometimes they get destroyed and we're gonna be able to do that.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:10.240
Foam letters.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:12.960
Sometimes you get there and then not much left of the crate.
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:13.439
Yeah.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.639
But we got there and everything was great, and we're like, thank you, Lord.
00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:19.360
So yeah, uh, yeah, it was it was fun.
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:20.319
Yeah, good setup.
00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:21.680
Well, good, good.
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:36.240
Well, hey, all this quarter we've uh been talking about becoming someone others want to follow, not simply because it's a position uh or a title, but because of uh character and trust and presence and care.
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:52.560
And so I wanted us to look at a at a passage this uh this morning where someone that really had a title, someone that had all the authority, someone that had uh the name, but yet decided to take it to a whole new level.
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:57.039
So I want us to look at a uh very familiar passage in the book of John.
00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:09.919
It's actually a meal, and it's not just any meal, but it's Jesus' final meal with the 12 who have been with him for probably three and a half years, and it even includes Judas.
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:12.960
And so there's uh it's a very unique meal.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:28.879
It's Passover, so it's uh it's one of the uh it's the biggest celebration of the year for Jewish people because they're reminded of what happened in the Old Testament when the death angel passed over them and they were released from bondage in Egypt.
00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:36.960
So I'll have you read verses three, four, and five that uh tell us, and I'll probably uh stop you along the way.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:46.080
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God, and was returning to God.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:52.400
So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:02.159
After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:07.919
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:14.159
And Jesus replied, You do not realize what I am doing, but later you will understand.
00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:17.920
No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet.
00:04:18.079 --> 00:04:23.199
And Jesus answered, Unless I wash your feet, you have no part with me.
00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:24.959
Let's stop there.
00:04:25.759 --> 00:04:30.079
So Jesus wasn't serving because he lacked authority.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:34.160
He wasn't serving from a position of insecurity.
00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:51.680
He was secure and understanding who he was, and then the person with all the authority in the room gets up from the meal, takes off his outer clothing, wraps a towel around his waist, pours water into a basin, and begins washing his disciples' feet.
00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:59.839
I was going to ask you, have you ever participated in a foot washing service just as a part of your faith tradition?
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.040
Yeah, a couple times.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:01.600
Okay.
00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:02.399
It's a powerful.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:03.759
It really is.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:12.800
You know, for me, and I don't know uh how it how it got you, but it wasn't hard at all to wash somebody else's feet.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:24.879
What was hard was to, in a sense, let someone I mean, I could have done the foot washing for everybody and gone home, but but to have people wash my feet, that really changed it for me.
00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:27.759
I don't know about you, what your experience was.
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:29.040
About the same.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:29.519
Okay.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:29.920
Yeah.
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:30.319
Yeah.
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:30.720
Yeah.
00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:37.839
You thinking about washing someone's feet, you know, like those who might be listening, like, why would you ever do that?
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:38.879
Why would you do that?
00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:39.279
Yeah.
00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:40.959
That is the weirdest thing ever.
00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:41.439
Yeah.
00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:45.199
Um, but remember in those days, like they had they wore sandals.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:45.600
Yeah.
00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:45.839
Right.
00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:49.120
And their feet were really dirty, dusty roads all the time.
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:49.759
Right.
00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:54.399
Um, they would come in and and have to wash their feet before they entered a home.
00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:59.199
Um, and so for this, like typically a servant would wash their feet.
00:05:59.439 --> 00:05:59.519
Yeah.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:04.319
So that I wanted to put that in context of why Jesus got down to wash their feet.
00:06:04.560 --> 00:06:06.480
Because no one, no servant did it, right?
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:06.800
Right.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:08.959
And everybody else thought they were above that.
00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:15.920
And the person that had all the title, all the authority, uh, all the power, he's the one that ends up washing it.
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:16.480
Yeah.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:17.040
Yeah.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:31.199
And I think that uh uh if you read uh I think it's um verse 15, kind of uh it's not just about, hey, let's find water and get a towel and go around washing everybody's feet.
00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:33.920
Uh I don't think it was literally that.
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:39.920
Uh it's fine to do it, it's fine, it's a great tradition, but it was about something more than that.
00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:46.399
Uh Jesus says, I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:54.399
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:59.519
Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:06.079
So it's likely, isn't it, that he's talking about more than just doing a foot washing service.
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:11.920
He's talking about how do we kind of figuratively pick up a towel and serve.
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:16.240
In other words, it's not about a title, it's more about a towel.
00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:24.319
And so if you if you manage people, you know, serving may mean doing something you could easily tell someone else to do.
00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:30.560
If you work beside others, it may mean stepping in when a co-worker is overloaded.
00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:36.959
And at home, it may mean doing the thing that you keep waiting for someone else to do.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:41.519
Um, so Jesus doesn't tell us to tell us what greatness looks like.
00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:44.639
He got down on his knees and he showed it.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:52.160
So this uh this week we're looking at this whole idea of uh you know picking up the towel.
00:07:52.319 --> 00:08:04.639
That's really our um that's kind of our focus this week is to do one thing for someone that's uh not necessarily uh your responsibility.
00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:07.360
It's unlikely to get any recognition.
00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:16.480
It's someone that you think normally they would be serving you, but you don't announce it, you don't post it, you don't keep score, you simply serve.
00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:24.000
And so I guess we're asking each morning this week to say, hey, where can I pick up the towel today?
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:32.960
Uh how do I go about doing something today that is an act of service as a way to say, hey, Jesus, I get it.
00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:35.919
I get what this last meal was all about.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:41.679
I get what it means to pick up a towel, and I'm looking for a way today to serve.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:45.120
You know, we've been talking about becoming someone others can trust.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:53.679
We've talked about noticing people, about knowing people, we've talked about caring for people, and then about serving people.
00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:57.279
So that's the the towel challenge, if you will.
00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:04.399
Uh, it's not expected of you, it's outside your responsibility, and it's unlikely to be noticed.
00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:09.200
Um you you got to do that really all weekend, didn't you?
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:20.320
I mean, you had an opportunity to serve our team kind of behind the scenes and have all that set up so then when our team comes in, it's all set up and it's all prepared and it's all ready to go.
00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:23.600
And it wasn't fanfare, hey, this is all about Brian.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:24.480
It wasn't that at all.
00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:30.320
It's just you were willing to go down and take time away from your family and serve.
00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:32.399
And so we on my birthday.
00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:34.000
On your birth I know.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:35.120
Yeah, how's that?
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:38.960
That's that's a not that it's about me.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:41.519
Not that it's about me, but I loved it, man.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:42.720
Yeah, I enjoyed it.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.559
I I got to serve with others too.
00:09:44.799 --> 00:09:55.440
I know that were about it wasn't just you, just you have a great team, and I was so excited to go down there and do that and get that set up with them and figure things out, and it was a lot of fun.
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:55.840
Yeah.
00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.080
I also want to challenge you.
00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:05.279
There are a lot of things that that we talk about, especially if you're a part of a church, you're like, I wish our church would do this.
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:07.440
Well, yeah, that's good.
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:08.639
Pick up your towel.
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:09.120
That's do.
00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:09.679
That's right.
00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:10.080
Yeah.
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:10.799
And do it.
00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:11.120
Yeah.
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:15.759
Start that thing that you've always wished the church would your church would have done.
00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:20.080
Um, that could be the Holy Spirit talking to you, giving you that nudge, yeah.
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:21.200
Saying, Let's go.
00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:25.120
I like if I put this on your heart, uh step into it.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:28.559
Take that step of faith and let's let's make this happen.
00:10:28.720 --> 00:10:32.480
Don't just wait on others to jump in and and serve.
00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:34.080
You go do it.
00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:34.639
Yeah.
00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:39.440
You know, as a pastor, I had a lot of people with the gift of complaining.
00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:44.559
And I don't think it's a spiritual gift, but it's like, why don't you exactly what you're saying?
00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:45.360
Why don't you do this?
00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:46.240
Why don't you do that?
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.919
And and so I learned to say, well, hey, how could you help lead that?
00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:51.519
How could you help us to do that?
00:10:51.679 --> 00:11:11.919
00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:24.960
So that's that's an excellent uh um side note to say it's not just about at work, it can be at home or it can be in a local church for those of you that are a part of a church.
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:29.759
Um so maybe the final question isn't am I a leader?
00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:37.600
It's am I becoming the kind of person that others can trust enough to follow by how I serve.
00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:49.039
Well, Brian, you didn't have an opportunity to be a part of our prayer time uh yesterday.
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:54.960
We missed you for that, but we did pray for the for the trade show and all that's happening down in New Orleans.
00:11:55.120 --> 00:12:02.639
Um, but there just were a number of things that we recognized uh that are going on uh with with our people.
00:12:02.879 --> 00:12:06.799
And so maybe you're listening to this podcast and you say, hey, I'm I'm one of those.
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:10.879
I wasn't at your meeting yesterday, but I've got a lot going on as well.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:23.360
And so we want to pray for you and Brian remind them of of how they get a hold of us and how we can be engaged in what they're going through so we can join them and help them to help carry the burden.
00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:30.799
Yeah, just go to Merlbros, M-E-R-R-E-L-L-B-R-O-S dot com and there's a prayer tab at the top of that page.
00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:36.399
Just click on that prayer tab, fill out that contact form, and uh we'll pray for you or get in touch with you.
00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:38.080
Okay, that'd be great.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:42.879
So we'll uh uh I think uh let me pray since you were already down there.
00:12:42.960 --> 00:13:01.039
Let me pray for the trade show and all the um the connections that are made from that, and then I'll just have you pray for for our team and for the people that are listening that are maybe going through something right now, and uh also have you include this idea that we this week we're gonna pick up the towel.
00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:01.759
How about that?
00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:02.559
Perfect.
00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:21.519
Okay, Father, I just give you thanks for uh the opportunity we have as a company to showcase um what it is that uh is possible with uh some of the many solutions that we have to the issues that people are dealing with in the wastewater world.
00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:38.080
And so I just pray for great conversations, even this morning, uh this afternoon, tomorrow, pray for all week that uh there'll be great conversations, people will be asking questions, and that uh we'll be able to say, hey, what if you had this issue?
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:40.320
How could we solve that as a company?
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:45.120
And we have so many solutions uh to the issues that people are struggling with.
00:13:45.200 --> 00:14:02.799
So we just pray that there'll be great uh opportunities that will come from this, there'll be some uh work that will come out of this, there'll be maybe a new uh sanitation uh um pelletizing facility that will result uh from these conversations.
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:15.279
There'll be communities that say we desperately need uh Merrill Bros to be a part of what's what our solutions are for uh the sanitation uh struggles that we're having, and that we get to be a part of that.
00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:27.759
So we're uh just so grateful for um for our marketing team and all that they did in preparing for that, all the people that were part of setting up and tearing down the people that will be there from our company.
00:14:27.919 --> 00:14:36.159
Uh we pray for safety for all of them as they go back and forth and for uh uh supernatural conversations all this week.
00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:38.720
So we're grateful for all of that in Jesus' name.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:45.360
Father, first and foremost, I just want to thank you for hearing our prayers.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:46.159
Amen.
00:14:46.799 --> 00:14:51.039
All throughout scripture it says you heard you heard the cries of your people.
00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:56.559
And so we have a lot of folks going through some pretty major things right now.
00:14:56.799 --> 00:15:04.399
Even uh some of our listeners are are thinking right now, I'm I'm really going through it, and I just need someone to listen.
00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:06.960
And I don't know what to do.
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:20.480
And God, I just pray that they would take this opportunity to just stop and pray to you right now for the things that they're struggling with, the things that are happening in their lives that they feel like they have no where or no one to turn to.
00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:22.559
God, but you're always there listening.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:27.039
And I pray that they would just stop and just pray to you right now, just as we are today.
00:15:27.200 --> 00:15:36.480
I pray for those in our our company that uh this morning and throughout this past week that have um asked for prayer for things that they're going through.
00:15:36.720 --> 00:15:45.600
God, you know who they are, you know the situations, and so we're just praying that you continue to uh just answer those prayers for them.
00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:48.000
We thank you for all the prayers that you have answered.
00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:56.639
It was very evident this past week that you answered prayer specifically for one of our drivers as he was driving, and so we're just so thankful for that.
00:15:56.720 --> 00:15:56.960
Uh-huh.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:17.279
God, and we just thank you that you have given us an opportunity here to serve others, and we can put on that towel, and your son just led by example, and that he had the most authority anyone on earth has ever had, and he yet he put on a towel to wash his disciples' feet.
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:23.519
And I pray that we would take those opportunities this week to put on that towel and serve others.
00:16:23.919 --> 00:16:39.759
We pray all the time that you would just help us in situations or that we would have opportunities to do certain things, or we always pray that um someone else would do something to help, and uh you have given us the the means to do that.
00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:47.759
And so I pray that we would uh listen to the Holy Spirit's push on our lives and uh just pick up that tau and serve.
00:16:48.240 --> 00:16:50.480
It doesn't have to be a huge thing either, God.
00:16:50.559 --> 00:16:52.000
It can be something small.
00:16:52.399 --> 00:16:55.039
Uh you continually put things in front of us.
00:16:55.519 --> 00:17:00.320
Uh I pray that we would just answer that call and do and serve.
00:17:00.799 --> 00:17:03.279
Thank you, God, for how you provide for us each day.
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:07.359
Thank you for listening to our prayers and answering.
00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:09.519
Pray all this in your son's name.
00:17:09.759 --> 00:17:10.240
Amen.
00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:10.880
Amen.
00:17:11.039 --> 00:17:11.680
Amen.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:14.000
Well, we'd love to pray for you as well.
00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:22.960
So make sure you go to Merrillbrose.com, click the prayer tab at the top of the page, and uh that will give us an opportunity to join you in praying.
00:17:23.680 --> 00:17:27.200
Again, thanks for joining us for another episode of Solid Start.
00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:33.599
Keep growing, keep encouraging, and keep making a difference by picking up the towel of serving.
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:35.759
Have a great day.
