DAY 7 RECAP: Scheifele Hat Trick Rescues Canada; Finland and Swiss Keep Rolling
Day 7 of the 2026 IIHF Men's World Championship on May 21st delivered pure chaos and heavyweight dominance across the groups. The game of the day unfolded in Fribourg's Group B bracket, where Canada narrowly escaped a historic upset, overcoming an incredibly gritty Norway squad 6–5 in overtime. Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele carried the Canadians on his back, scoring twice in the opening frame to wipe out an early 2–0 Norwegian lead, before completing his hat trick just 29 seconds into the extra frame off a slick backdoor pass. The resilient Norwegians actually led 5–4 late in the third period—marking the first time they had ever hung five goals on Canada in tournament history—before veteran Ryan O'Reilly tipped home the game-tying goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to set up Scheifele’s overtime heroics.
The rest of Thursday’s slate saw dominant, business-as-usual performances from the tournament's top-seeded teams. Over in Zurich's Group A action, Finland absolutely cruised past Latvia in a 7–1 blowout, answering an early Latvian goal with seven unanswered tallies to maintain their perfect record through four preliminary games. Right behind them in the Group A standings, host Switzerland became the first team to reach five victories by comfortably handling Great Britain 4–1, fueled by a dominant two-goal effort from captain Nino Niederreiter. Meanwhile, back in Group B, Slovakia left absolutely no doubt by dismantling Denmark 5–1, completely suffocating the Danes with a massive 44–14 shot advantage. Oliver Okuliar spearheaded the Slovak attack with a stellar three-point night, moving Slovakia into a temporary tie with Canada for the top spot in the group.
