OM DETTA AVSNITT
Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them—whether it’s a major life transition or an unexpected physical setback like a torn hamstring. In this episode of Next Chapter, Uncensored, Liana Rowlands reflects on how we navigate those frustrating moments when our favorite outlets are taken away.
Discover the power of being like the willow tree in a storm, the Japanese art of Kintsugi (mending breaks with gold), and how micro-moments of mindfulness and "both/and" gratitude can help you find peace amidst life’s cracks.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
- The Willow Tree Analogy: Why rigidity causes us to snap under pressure, and how bending and swaying allows us to survive the storm.
- The Art of Kintsugi: How highlighting our cracks with grace and gratitude makes us even more beautiful for having been broken.
- Micro-Moments of Mindfulness: How shrinking your focus to just the next 5 minutes can soothe a spiraling nervous system.
- Practicing "Both/And" Gratitude: How to acknowledge hard situations while still spotting the small glimmers of good.
- This Week's Challenge: A 3-breath grounding exercise to help you lean into your roots when life throws a twist your way.

00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:13.039
Welcome back to next chapter Uncensored.
00:00:13.039 --> 00:00:14.320
I'm Liana Rowlands.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:17.839
Grab your beverage of choice, sit back and let's chat.
00:00:18.160 --> 00:00:25.120
Have you ever found yourself looking back at your life's challenges, completely stuck in the what-ifs and should-haves?
00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:28.559
It can be so hard not to go down that rabbit hole.
00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:37.600
Today I want to share how I navigate those moments and how choosing gratitude helps me shift my focus back to what brings me joy.
00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:44.479
Let's be honest, life has a way of throwing curveballs at us at the most inopportune times.
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:47.039
Not that there's ever a good time for one.
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:56.079
Sometimes those curveballs are huge life shifts, but other times they hit close to home in very physical ways.
00:00:56.079 --> 00:01:01.600
Not too long ago I tore my hamstring and talk about a complete halt.
00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:04.799
Suddenly I was forced to slow way down.
00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:10.480
I couldn't get out on the field for baseball and golf was completely out of the question.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:13.760
Oh dear, did I just bring up bad memories?
00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:16.000
I'm knocking on wood right now.
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:27.599
Managing moments like that can feel incredibly frustrating, daunting, and overwhelming, especially when your favorite outlets are taken away from you.
00:01:27.599 --> 00:01:35.200
But regardless of whether it's a minor headache or a major life pivot, the real challenge is how do we bounce back?
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:40.560
When those heavy winds blow, it helps to think of a willow tree in a storm.
00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:45.840
The rigid trees try to stand completely unyielding, and they're the ones that snap.
00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:48.560
But imagine yourself as a willow tree.
00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:54.159
It bends and sways, yields to the storm, and dips low.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:01:56.799
That flexibility isn't weakness.
00:01:56.799 --> 00:01:58.480
It's how it survives.
00:01:58.480 --> 00:02:04.079
When the wind dies down, the willow rises back up because its roots held firm.
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:08.080
Have you heard of the Japanese art of Kintsugi?
00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:10.639
I think that's how you pronounce it.
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:14.560
It's where broken pottery is repaired with gold lacquer.
00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:22.080
Instead of hiding the cracks, the gold highlights them, making the piece even more beautiful for having been broken.
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:26.319
Bouncing back doesn't mean standing unshakable.
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:30.080
It means allowing ourselves to bend without breaking.
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:36.960
Mending the brakes with grace and gratitude, and recognizing that our cracks are just a part of our story.
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:41.039
So how do I actually get through those rough spots?
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:48.240
For me, it comes down to two simple practices mindfulness and intentionally weaving in gratitude.
00:02:48.240 --> 00:02:54.000
Now when I say mindfulness, I don't mean sitting cross-legged on a cushion for an hour.
00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.120
Though if you do that, more power to you.
00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:00.879
For me, mindfulness is really about micro moments.
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:08.240
When a curveball lands and my brain starts spiraling into what if this happens or what if that goes wrong?
00:03:08.240 --> 00:03:12.080
I slow down and shrink my focus to right now.
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:14.560
Just the next five minutes.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:23.280
Maybe I'll make a cup of coffee, notice the warmth of the mug in my hands, or take three slow deep breaths.
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:30.400
It's a simple way to tell my nervous system in this exact second I am okay.
00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:34.000
And that's where gratitude comes in.
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:40.400
Gratitude isn't about pretending things don't hurt or slapping a fake smile on a situation.
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:44.719
It's about practicing the both and thinking.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:54.560
I can acknowledge that a situation is incredibly stressful, and at the same time, I can notice the small glimmers of good that are still here.
00:03:54.560 --> 00:04:01.199
When I tore my hamstring, just going from standing to sitting or going for a walk was painful.
00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:04.879
But I had to hold both truths at once.
00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:18.240
This physical setback stinks and it slowed me down, and I can be grateful for the extra rest, the time to catch up on other passions, and a body that is actively healing.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:25.199
Finding gratitude in those sidelined moments is how we start painting gold over those cracks.
00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:31.199
Every day I practice gratitude by acknowledging the good that's right in front of me.
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:41.600
The very fact that I'm alive and able to experience life with all its ups and downs is something I feel grateful for every time I wake up.
00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:46.720
At the end of the day, bouncing back is a practice, not a destination.
00:04:46.720 --> 00:04:52.399
It's an ongoing choice to hold the heavy stuff in one hand and gratitude in the other.
00:04:52.399 --> 00:05:01.600
My challenge for you this week is that when life throws an unexpected twist your way, take three deep breaths and remember the willow tree.
00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:09.360
Give yourself permission to sway, lean into your roots, and trust that you have everything you need to rise back up.
00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:12.480
Thank you so much for sitting with me today.
