Understanding Gen Z | MENtality with Ebuka, Banky W & Tobeszn

In this episode of MENtality with Ebuka, host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu is joined by co-host Banky Wellington, alongside Gen Z influencer and content creator Tobeszn, for a thought-provoking conversation on ageism, leadership, and the evolving dynamics of influence across generations.

The discussion explores how age often shapes perceptions of credibility, authority, and opportunity, particularly within many African societies where leadership is traditionally associated with seniority and years of experience. For many young men, this can create barriers to participation, innovation, and decision-making, reinforcing the belief that leadership is something to grow into rather than something they may already be prepared for.

Together, the guests examine the tensions that can arise between established and emerging leaders, discussing the value of lived experience alongside the fresh perspectives, adaptability, and innovation that younger generations bring. The conversation challenges conventional ideas about leadership, questioning whether wisdom is defined solely by age or whether it can also be demonstrated through competence, character, emotional intelligence, and vision.

Ultimately, the episode encourages listeners to rethink how leadership is recognised and developed, advocating for greater collaboration between generations where experience and innovation complement rather than compete with one another. It presents leadership not as a privilege reserved for age, but as a responsibility earned through integrity, capability, and a willingness to serve.

WEBVTT
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:04.320
Every generation thinks the next one is softer, louder, or lost.
00:00:04.480 --> 00:00:09.839
What if Gen Z isn't broken, just operating with a completely different map of the world?
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:18.000
Well, today on Mentality with Abuka, I'm joined by my co-host Banky W and Gen Z Influenza Tobias.
00:00:19.199 --> 00:00:25.600
This season of mentality with Abuka is brought to you by Schweppes and the Glen Leavett.
00:00:26.640 --> 00:00:27.839
Why are you worried?
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:28.640
I don't know.
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:31.920
Are we are we are we do we look threatening to you?
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:33.119
No, too great, man.
00:00:33.359 --> 00:00:34.159
Imagine a fish.
00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:39.200
You don't have faith in yourself.
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:39.759
I do have it.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:43.359
Congratulations on that, by the way.
00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:44.240
Congratulations.
00:00:44.640 --> 00:00:46.399
How was law school for you?
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:52.560
It was your deal law school and influencing and doing all of this public life, which I find crazy.
00:00:52.719 --> 00:00:55.200
Well, not crazy because people thought I was going to fail law schools.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:00.799
And I did it, but I wasn't influencing, I was just kind of in and out of school and all of that.
00:01:01.039 --> 00:01:06.560
But this being distracted in on that level, people fail law school.
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:08.959
Were you not afraid?
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:10.319
Yeah, I was yeah, no.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:11.840
But I was doing his skate.
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:15.920
Yeah, because I saw I saw his um, I think he did a TikTok of you checking your results.
00:01:16.159 --> 00:01:17.439
Yes, I did when I checked.
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:29.519
So my question is when you when you are checking that if you now find a simple code, oh Ghost, that was fun.
00:01:30.239 --> 00:01:32.879
Moving on swiftly on to the next.
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:34.000
I don't have any, you know.
00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:35.439
You press, then you know what to.
00:01:35.519 --> 00:01:39.280
I'm like, the email is still going to be back from back.
00:01:40.079 --> 00:01:44.079
But anyway, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to mentality with Ibuka.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:46.719
And um, we have a special guest here today, of course.
00:01:46.799 --> 00:01:49.439
Back in Ws in the House, as always.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.799
A baloba, yes, sir, because you have Baloga to do with people.
00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:54.239
Hey, listen, I'm an ego.
00:01:55.519 --> 00:01:56.719
I will have you with us.
00:01:56.879 --> 00:01:57.760
What do you like to be called?
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:00.319
Toby season or barista.
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:03.920
Hey, put the title there.
00:02:04.159 --> 00:02:05.680
I was easy, seven years.
00:02:05.760 --> 00:02:10.639
No, but today's season is fine, but sometimes barrister T when I'm feeling uh-uh, BT.
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:11.599
Yeah, B T.
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:13.199
Well, you heard him, Barista T.
00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:13.520
Yeah.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:18.319
The Gen Z lawyer in the building, influencer, amongst other things.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:19.360
And we're gonna be.
00:02:19.520 --> 00:02:22.400
I think today we want to try and understand Gen Z's.
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:25.039
Yeah, and this is very important for us.
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:36.400
One, because I feel like I've been guilty, even on this show, for a few episodes of generalizing how this generation moves.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:37.840
I've said it a lot on the show.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:39.199
Gen Z's are Gen Ziza.
00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:41.680
So maybe we need to even be schooled on this thing.
00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:45.199
Because you already given give us an insight a bit outside of the show about this.
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:46.400
Is not all Gen Z's.
00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:50.400
Yeah, you said the people around you are not that way when we're talking about something.
00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:53.680
So, how do you feel, first of all, about this tag?
00:02:53.919 --> 00:03:03.520
It feels like your generation, more than any other generation, however, you act, is tied to the fact that you're Gen Z.
00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:08.479
Do you think that's a fair way to view you guys?
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:13.360
Um or do you guys bring it up on yourselves?
00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:18.879
So, what's funny is I've never been on the podcast that someone is saving me.
00:03:18.879 --> 00:03:19.520
So I'm a bit shocked.
00:03:19.599 --> 00:03:20.159
I'm like, Jen.
00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:24.159
This is how millennials do it.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:34.400
I'm like, whoa! Broke, I'm like the center.
00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:37.680
There's depth.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:40.879
There's depth of people walk around.
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:46.080
Um, I think the we're being young, I'm not sure.
00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:49.680
I feel like in the past like five years, like every time it's like Gen Z, Gen Z, Gen Z.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:54.960
And I I don't know when it became a thing, but I've just somewhat gotten used to it, right?
00:03:55.120 --> 00:04:00.719
So if I would do something, they're like, ah, Gen Z are so Gen Z are so audio, so Gen Z are so disrespectful.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:02.879
Are they both true?
00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:11.520
I think that constant is nuanced in a sense that I think well, everyone is going to be, and I was explaining this to someone earlier on.
00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:15.680
Jesse struggles my dad would have had that I would never have, right?
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:24.800
And I'm sure at that time though, too, your generation was XYZ, but it wasn't as mainstream because we didn't have the internet to we are seeing Gen Z's around the world.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:26.879
So for the first time, there's a collective.
00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:28.319
So I'm going to give an instance.
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:33.279
I would believe my dad's dad would be like, you naughty boy, you and your friends in your age group were XYZ.
00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:42.319
But for the first time, I see a collective people around the world have one thing in common from audacity to just raw opinions, and it's one name they're calling us Gen Z's.
00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:44.319
So it's just easier to group us together.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:53.040
So when it comes down to it, I don't know that Gen Z are no, I think Gen Z's are very audacious, but I also know, I think I know why.
00:04:53.680 --> 00:05:01.199
And but I don't know if we're disrespectful as a collective, because it's very it becomes very polytelling.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:04.639
I wouldn't say Gen Z's are disrespectful at all.
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:09.120
I also wouldn't, it's a disingenuous to say at all.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:09.519
Okay.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:12.800
So I think people can be disrespectful, but I don't think it's a factor of age.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:14.079
So it's not a Gen Z thing.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.079
I don't think it's a Gen Z thing to be disrespectful.
00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:17.279
I think it's a people thing.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:19.360
But you think audaciousness is a Gen Z thing.
00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:22.000
So why then do you think that one is and disrespect isn't?
00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:23.279
Because one is a nicer word.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:35.839
I think that's what I was saying it, I was like, I was trying to think about the reasoning why, but I think in genuinity, you would have so percentage-wise, if I were to meet 10 young people who actually don't I don't use Gen Z's by the way.
00:05:35.920 --> 00:05:37.839
Only when I'm people that know Jensi actually say Gen Z's.
00:05:37.920 --> 00:05:38.720
I would say young people.
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:40.879
But it showed us our age.
00:05:41.360 --> 00:05:47.600
But if I meet like 10 young people, 10 of them would have audacity in the sense that they want more.
00:05:47.680 --> 00:05:49.360
And I understand why they want more.
00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:51.519
Like systematically, we have to want more.
00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:54.800
I've seen my parents want more, but not go for it.
00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:58.480
Every typical Gen Z feels like I'm the answer to my parents' prayers.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:02.480
We've known that we've had to go, we've had to do what our parents couldn't.
00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:05.360
So for the first time, realistically, we're on part with the Western world.
00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:09.839
We have internet that there's nothing you are going to tell me that's I cannot know.
00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:13.519
So the reason we have so much audacity is we know what's possible.
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:17.680
So we are backed up like systematically, we're encoded to have audacity.
00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:23.920
We can't tell, I can say, I want to build an app that does XYZ.
00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:26.639
You know, I want to change the future of creators across Africa.
00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:28.959
But I'm not just saying it anymore.
00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:34.240
I have audacity because there's data that can back it up and say, oh, there's a 20-year-old in Thailand that did this.
00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:37.279
So audacity is inborn because we have seen it happen.
00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:39.279
But that's why I wouldn't say disrespect is.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:44.319
Because there's no backtrack, there's no data that says younger people are disrespectful.
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:49.040
And I so sometimes when I have conversations with people and they're like, oh yeah, Jenzies are disrespectful.
00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:52.800
And I'm like, in the Nigerian system, leadership doesn't like being challenged.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:54.800
And young people like to challenge leadership.
00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:56.000
It's always been a thing.
00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:57.839
So anything will look like disrespect.
00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:01.759
So unless you're open-minded, you generally think young people are disrespectful.
00:07:01.920 --> 00:07:06.800
So every generation thinks that the ones coming after them are soft and entitled.
00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:11.759
It just happens to be like our parent generation thought that we were soft and entitled.
00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:13.199
Ah, in my day, you didn't know.
00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:15.120
I used to trek, I didn't wear shoes.
00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:16.399
I used to go to you know.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:19.600
I did I did that to my daughter recently, but did you really?
00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:21.279
You just came out.
00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:22.959
That's how you know you have entered the school.
00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:24.399
You are a daddy now.
00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:30.160
I think something happened whether the driver picked her up late from school and she got very I said, Do you know I used to trek?
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:35.600
And I'm like, you have become yes, you're now why does she have completely the circle?
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:36.319
Why does she care?
00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:37.439
Sorry.
00:07:37.759 --> 00:07:52.639
So so my question is, what is it that Gen Z, and I I know we say we don't want to generalize, but what is it that people of this generation that you're in are reacting to that others maybe don't understand?
00:07:54.240 --> 00:07:57.120
I think for one, a lot of things generally.
00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:02.800
Um, you are also Nigeria is a pretty like relatively new country, we're just like 60 something.
00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:10.079
And there's times when that we say, Oh, when I was younger, when you finish your class five, you can get a job, you can do this.
00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:13.920
And in my head, I'm like, Well, daddy, that's not the reality right now.
00:08:14.800 --> 00:08:17.439
I no one is going to hire me.
00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:18.800
I have to have more.
00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:24.639
Like, we are I I know the economy must have been bad in you guys' time, but guys.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:30.800
No, but I'm saying, like, as a young adult, yeah, I wept.
00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:35.600
No, but as a young adult, like you're almost on the brink of poverty already.
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:39.919
Like, like you're already handicapped, like the economic situation is bad.
00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:42.879
So that is a defining factor for us, like realistically.
00:08:43.120 --> 00:09:05.200
I so I also don't know, because I don't like to say in comparison, but I've read books on times before, and I'm just like we're really suffering as young people in Nigeria, and I also think the social values have shifted in a sense that I think way back from books I've read, if I left Union and I wanted to be a professor, it would be more respected.
00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:12.399
We've put so much value on money subconsciously that everyone no one wants to settle for personally.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:16.559
I I like money, but I also like a calm life.
00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:18.000
I would love to live in a cabin.
00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:21.759
Isn't the argument that it's even you guys that are more materialistic now?
00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.559
But what's the precedence for us being materialistic?
00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:31.600
Comparing yourself to your peers, yes, but I and social media making that comparison very easy to do and almost unavoidable.
00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:35.279
Because there's the argument that the generation before Gen Z, I don't want this to be a fight or anything.
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:36.639
No, we're just trying to understand Genesis.
00:09:36.720 --> 00:09:37.440
No, we'll look at it.
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:46.000
Because there's a conversation that millennials, whatever generation are before Gen Z we competed, if anything, with our community.
00:09:46.320 --> 00:09:49.279
Uh oh, my neighbor don't buy Corolla.
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:54.159
You are not aspiring to that Corolla, whereas you guys are constantly looking at the guy.
00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:56.159
You met now, you day and I mentioned Thailand.
00:09:56.399 --> 00:09:57.600
Yeah, but startup.
00:09:57.840 --> 00:09:59.919
We still have Thailand to compare ourselves to.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.879
Yeah, so you guys are a lot more vicious.
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:04.960
Vicious with I want these things.
00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:05.519
Yes.
00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:11.120
And it's also perceived that you want those things without actually working to earn it.
00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:12.879
You want those things at 23.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:13.200
Yeah.
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:22.080
When the realistic conversation should be you get to 34, 35, or maybe not even age-wise, you would have certain things.
00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:22.480
Yes.
00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:26.720
So it also comes with the impatience of wanting to achieve things.
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:30.159
Maybe society has made it that way, social media has made it that way.
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:32.720
But that's also a fact, isn't it?
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:34.720
Yes, I think so.
00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:42.639
I think what why this is funny is um I recently need to make a video about just the influencing people from certain standards of reality.
00:10:42.720 --> 00:10:48.320
For instance, if you are 25 and you've bought your first house, you are literally wonning a million.
00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:49.840
Yes, like it is not that's one thing.
00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:50.960
People don't realize that's the exception.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:51.360
It doesn't matter.
00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:52.559
It is not the normal.
00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:53.600
And that's what I was trying to explain.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:55.919
Like, yeah, yes, the post is going to do well, do well.
00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.600
Yes, 100,000 people are going to like it and say, Oh my god, 25 and I've got your first house.
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:02.159
Well, you're just one person getting your first house at 25.
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:09.679
Like, realistically, around the world, having a certain amount of money, driving a certain a certain type of car is a privilege.
00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:19.200
And I always tell people, like, when someone tells me, like, I need to 19, I need to lock in, I need to buy a bins, ah, I don't think you're buying the job.
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:28.080
And so it's such a it's such a common thing, and I like to tell my friends that I think if you are driving a Benz at 19, I think you're a lot, you're very privileged.
00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:36.000
So your parents either have had money or you are very privileged to have worked at that age to get that money because it is it's literally a glitch in the system, it is not normal.
00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:39.039
And something I like to say is, I'm going to live my entire life.
00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:42.320
If I do everything when I'm 25, then what am I gonna do when I'm 60?
00:11:42.639 --> 00:11:48.799
I think as young people, we need to consciously remind ourselves that life will happen.
00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:50.159
Just keep going.
00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:52.159
But it's hard, and as a young person, I understand it.
00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:59.279
There are certain times that actually I'm very content with my own life, but there's certain times that I see something and I'm like, it's brilliant.
00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:01.519
I think it's the con of social media.
00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:05.600
Because I can equally dream, I can equally not feel enough.
00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:08.000
I can equally not feel enough.
00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:15.519
So in a so in a system that I can go home today and say, Oh my god, I was on the podcast with two icons, right?
00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:19.279
But then I open my my phone and I see someone podcast Elon Musk.
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:21.600
And I'm like, Oh, there's such a far way to go.
00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:26.240
But if I was just a far way, let's let's be honest.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:46.159
Okay, yeah, but we even now like okay, I hear okay.
00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:49.360
I'll be by two icons separate, yes, great.
00:12:49.440 --> 00:12:50.080
Now they are way.
00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:56.080
Yeah, don't worry, but do you understand coming from it's such a oh wow, I can do this too.
00:12:56.159 --> 00:12:56.879
Let me give you an instance.
00:12:57.039 --> 00:13:01.759
I can walk into this set and say, ah, wow, this icon has this, I want mine too.
00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:16.320
Because it's such a I think also every time I think of this, I can't help but realize that when society rewards money realistically, like I've seen creators who might not have as much substance, but they're like, Oh, they're rich.
00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:20.559
So even in arguments, you can be arguing with someone and they're like, How much you get for your account?
00:13:20.799 --> 00:13:25.600
And every time I hear that, I'm like, surely money is not a test of intelligence.
00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:29.039
But we've created a world where it something is, it's undeniable.
00:13:29.120 --> 00:13:34.480
It's in the things we do, is in the so many things happen, and I'm like, you guys know that.
00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:34.960
Wow.
00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:40.960
So, in a sense, that's how I look at it and how I look at my friend, but when I speak to them, I always say, like, we're the next industry leaders, right?
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:46.320
In the sense that where you are right now, if you've gone this far, what I what exactly are you scared of?
00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:48.720
Like the odds are you've you've already beat the odds.
00:13:48.879 --> 00:13:52.639
If you are here, if you've done this, you've done XYZ, surely you're going to get far.
00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:58.240
But sometimes I speak to young people, and there's so much fear, and I think it's just a con of social media.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.519
Is unfortunately comparison is the thief of joy.
00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:06.559
Like you will feel left out, you feel things can be better, and it's always going to happen.
00:14:06.720 --> 00:14:14.159
How do you feel like how do you feel as a Gen Z guy as compared to the women, right?
00:14:14.799 --> 00:14:28.240
Um, I've seen insinuations um about how much better the women are doing in your generation, whether it's because of the influenza culture, social media sort of favors women.
00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:32.320
I mean, the aesthetics are always uh so how does that make you feel?
00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:54.720
And secondly, is it fair to say that I'm trying to frame this to frame this well because we are such a close we're very close generation-wise, millennials and Gen Z, but we don't seem to understand each other enough.
00:14:55.519 --> 00:15:05.840
Um is it fair to say that a lot of the burdens you carry might have been because we didn't do things right before you guys?
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:08.639
I don't think so.
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:17.120
I don't think it's because as a person, because every time I have these conversations, I like to really see to my parents and how I think about my older cousins, older my parents.
00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:22.720
I give everyone grace in a sense that I don't want the next generation to come and say, Oh, Toby, you could have done this.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:23.440
I couldn't have.
00:15:23.519 --> 00:15:33.679
I was so, in a sense that's I don't think it's necessarily so there's certain things that I think no, I don't think it's any is necessarily any generation's fault.
00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:38.000
For instance, bad government, bad leadership.
00:15:38.799 --> 00:15:40.960
What would my what would my daddy have done?
00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:46.559
I hope he tried his best, but I'm not going to live my entire life angry at a best that he couldn't try.
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:49.440
There are so many factors that would affect certain positions.
00:15:49.600 --> 00:15:56.159
Like, I would never say, um, oh, older creators could have done better for me.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:15:58.960
I would say, what can I do better for younger creators?
00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:01.440
Also, because maybe it's easier to look at it that way.
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:06.559
So I don't, and on the convention of is it fair, I don't think life is life is meant to be fair.
00:16:06.799 --> 00:16:10.080
I don't think, and it's also a realist, I don't think life is black and white.
00:16:10.480 --> 00:16:19.279
If people say female creators earn more right now, statistically, a lot of people who use social media more are women, so they have a fan base.
00:16:19.440 --> 00:16:20.399
Yes, that's a good point.
00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:31.600
Data will back, and so I think a lot of people are not realistic with what they are now, in a sense that before I became a creator, who is mainstream now.
00:16:31.759 --> 00:16:36.000
I hope all the cameras are getting oh, I used to just enjoy taking photos, right?
00:16:36.559 --> 00:16:43.279
And I liked it, but I did decide that oh, I want to make more money, so I want to do things that put me in a light, that position me as mainstream.
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.840
And I was realistic with my what do I have, what can I offer, what can I put out there?
00:16:48.240 --> 00:17:05.279
I think there's a there's a subtle idea, and I've been seeing this conversation recently, like no one is coming to save you, and people say, Oh, my sister will, oh my mother will, yes, people will save you in micro ways, but the idea that no one is coming to save you is like it's broad, it's like at the end of the day, it's you.
00:17:05.440 --> 00:17:11.920
You might have all the community in the world, but if you don't stand up and do it, like if you don't stand up and work, like it's you.
00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:15.680
So even when people say, Oh, I think female creators earn more, I'm like, that's the tea.
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:18.480
That's the thing if you don't write your story before it even starts.
00:17:18.640 --> 00:17:25.440
Because if you go in with the mindset of someone is earning more, or the older generation could have done better, I think it's just blame game for me.
00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:29.440
And I might be speaking from a point of privilege entirely, and I'd be I might be entirely there.
00:17:32.160 --> 00:17:34.079
It will come back, he could have done more for me.
00:17:34.240 --> 00:17:43.519
Don't tell me that they could have done scholarships, but I'm also it's also the reality of, and I was explaining this to someone, I was thinking to someone, and they're like, YouTube pays African creators less.
00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:45.279
Oh, I shouldn't say brand.
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:51.920
Yikes, but um so now I'm guessing okay, let's say a a music streaming platform, like, oh, they pay Africans less.
00:17:52.480 --> 00:17:56.880
And I'm like, guys, our subscription fees are subsidized, yeah.
00:17:57.119 --> 00:17:58.960
Of course they pay us less.
00:17:59.119 --> 00:18:03.440
We don't make enough, like do you know like when you think of the data, like it's not random.
00:18:03.599 --> 00:18:08.240
Okay, the subscription fees are subsidized for in Nigeria, like of course they will pay the artists less.
00:18:08.319 --> 00:18:11.039
Like, where is the money meant to come from?
00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:17.680
And so when you have certain conversations like this, it's such a every time people say, like, oh, African creators are underpaid.
00:18:17.839 --> 00:18:20.079
I'm like, yes, I agree entirely.
00:18:20.559 --> 00:18:33.039
I would also like to add that it is a growing system, like up until 15 years ago or 10 years ago, we didn't have when people ask me what do I do for as a job, I get anxiety because I'm like, how do I explain to you what I do for a job?
00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:43.440
I make videos on the internet, and it's such a funny conversation because that means if it has grown this far this quick, imagine it's in the next 10 years.
00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:46.640
So it's more like that.
00:18:46.799 --> 00:18:47.680
That's how I think about it.
00:18:47.839 --> 00:19:00.240
So I think one of the challenges with this kind of conversation is you are kind of being put on the spot to speak not just for yourself, but for your entire generation, which you really can't do, right?
00:19:00.319 --> 00:19:01.599
Because everybody's wired differently.
00:19:01.759 --> 00:19:02.480
That's not fair, yeah.
00:19:02.799 --> 00:19:12.160
And yeah, so the and the reason I use that preamble is to kind of get you this next question that I want to ask.
00:19:12.319 --> 00:19:22.480
I want you to think about your response as Tobey, but also think about your response as class president, yeah, as you know, class president of the Gen Z generation.
00:19:23.119 --> 00:19:37.680
And the reason I say that is one of the uh prevailing notions about the Gen Z generation is that maybe they don't really want to put in as much work and they don't want that same level of accountability.
00:19:37.920 --> 00:19:41.519
And I'm not saying that myself, but I'm saying that this is you know something exists.
00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:55.039
Now, the the only semblance of an experience that I've had with this was in one of the companies that I co-owned, we hired uh who I didn't laugh because you know my story.
00:19:55.200 --> 00:20:03.279
We hired somebody a Gen Zoom, but whenever you hear company and Gen Z, you gotta know what the story is very quick every time.
00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:12.720
Yeah, so we hired somebody, like a Gen Z lady um to come and work in a marketing role, like social media marketing and all of that.
00:20:12.880 --> 00:20:35.680
And I remember within the first, I think the first two or three weeks, you know, there was just this like kind of a general like lack of just not just showing like within the first two, three weeks, there was this meeting, we're gonna have like the marketing plan for the you know for the next six months and this, that, and the other thing.
00:20:35.839 --> 00:20:38.960
And work was supposed to start at like maybe nine or ten, maybe ten.
00:20:39.759 --> 00:20:50.000
And at like 12:30, one o'clock, the girl just kind of saunters into the office, just very like not, you know, say for our time.
00:20:50.240 --> 00:21:07.119
If you didn't come late, you go first look like say, you know, you don't happen, you know, like you'll be stressed, you'll walk in worry, and Charlie just like, oh, you know, my partner said, You know, we didn't hear from you, you didn't call, you didn't communicate.
00:21:07.200 --> 00:21:07.680
What happened?
00:21:07.759 --> 00:21:12.319
She said, Oh, I just overslept as if my heart felt true.
00:21:12.480 --> 00:21:14.880
And Nami hired it, Nami interviewed the girl.
00:21:14.960 --> 00:21:31.279
I so I did not even have mouth to say, and she was just like very like, oh yeah, I just kind of overslept, shut up my alarm, and overslept, and she was just very like not remorseful, not remorseful, not worrying about the cost, like just it is what it is.
00:21:31.599 --> 00:21:33.119
That's the audacity he was talking about.
00:21:33.359 --> 00:21:34.319
That's that audacity.
00:21:34.400 --> 00:21:37.759
So I don't know, it's audacity.
00:21:38.640 --> 00:21:48.319
So again, that's like been probably my one experience where it's just like and and this person, God bless her, lovely girl.
00:21:48.480 --> 00:21:59.759
You know, I liked her, you know, she she enjoyed working for me, but she didn't last very long because there were like multiple episodes like this in like a two and a half month span that we're just like listen, we don't.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:05.759
Understand each other, you know, just be going, let's let's love ourselves and live ourselves.
00:22:06.079 --> 00:22:31.920
And so, again, I guess is this idea that does is it that there's something in generation about not really working hard, or would some gensi people saying that they don't like to suffer unnecessarily and they've seen all of us what work has done to us and what so they prioritize themselves so they prioritize like self-care, or some maybe say being selfish amongst you know, regardless of what the consequences are, or is the truth somewhere in the middle?
00:22:32.079 --> 00:22:34.720
So I don't know if you can tackle that.
00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:44.079
I I think it's no pressure, you're all right, you're all right, you're all right.
00:22:44.319 --> 00:22:46.559
They will know they cannot come and beat you, you're alright.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:49.599
So I think it's also because I like to be very honest.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:51.039
I think that's very bad behavior.
00:22:51.200 --> 00:22:53.920
I think what she did is utterly wrong.
00:22:54.079 --> 00:23:00.640
Uh, when it comes to self-care as a young person, um, there's there's one time I was reading about parenting.
00:23:00.799 --> 00:23:03.599
I have a great relationship with my parents now because I had to build on it.
00:23:03.680 --> 00:23:11.920
So every time my parents do some things that are so I try to read something, and and it was just about how type A parents have type B kids.
00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:15.039
So if your parents are like very organized, you become less organized.
00:23:15.119 --> 00:23:18.319
But if a parents are very unorganized, you become more organized.
00:23:18.480 --> 00:23:23.359
And I think it's overflows in every I think it overflows in every system.
00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:27.200
Don't try me.
00:23:28.480 --> 00:23:30.400
So I think it overflows in a system.
00:23:30.480 --> 00:23:37.039
So for instance, if you speak to a typical young person, they'll tell you that, well, I'm not gonna kill myself for a job.
00:23:37.200 --> 00:23:44.240
And it's not because of the disdain for the job, it's because they watched their parents give their life to jobs that just never compensated them.
00:23:44.559 --> 00:23:47.920
So to some extent, I hear it, I know where you're coming from.
00:23:48.079 --> 00:23:50.559
Your feelings might be valid, but your actions are not.
00:23:50.799 --> 00:23:54.240
So there are better ways to handle things as well as that.
00:23:54.960 --> 00:24:01.039
When it comes to what this girl did, for instance, I always tell I work with young people on my team.
00:24:01.119 --> 00:24:02.880
I try to talk as many young people as possible.
00:24:02.960 --> 00:24:08.720
And sometimes I just call my manager, I'm like, can you see what this person just did?
00:24:08.960 --> 00:24:12.319
But I've also realized that discipline has to be a culture.
00:24:12.480 --> 00:24:16.319
A lot of young people go from university to working.
00:24:16.400 --> 00:24:20.000
So we don't have the we are finding our foot, unfortunately.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:24.079
And you wake up online and somebody's telling you, just wake up and love yourself.
00:24:24.319 --> 00:24:26.480
You don't know the nuance that person is speaking from.
00:24:26.720 --> 00:24:27.759
So there's a disconnect.
00:24:27.839 --> 00:24:32.319
So it's like if my boss tells me I have to wake up by seven, I have to love myself.
00:24:32.640 --> 00:24:34.079
Self-love is not the issue.
00:24:34.240 --> 00:24:35.359
You lack discipline.
00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:40.559
So there's now a disconnect between what I'm hearing versus what I'm doing.
00:24:40.720 --> 00:24:44.799
You don't, and I I also tell people that's I said, please, perspective matters.
00:24:44.960 --> 00:24:47.920
Like, surely, don't listen to every stranger's advice on the internet.
00:24:48.079 --> 00:24:51.680
There's reason there's stranger danger guys, like surely perspective matters.
00:24:51.759 --> 00:24:56.480
And even when I speak to people, I'm like, you don't have to do what everyone says.
00:24:56.559 --> 00:24:58.079
Like, you're allowed to have personality.
00:24:58.160 --> 00:25:04.079
I I know people who work nine to five speaking, they are partying or true, but they're waking up on Monday by 6 a.m.
00:25:04.240 --> 00:25:05.039
to get to work by eight.
00:25:05.279 --> 00:25:10.079
So there's also, I feel like a true test of being.
00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:12.880
So when I say, even when people tell me, oh, what does it mean to be jerzy?
00:25:13.039 --> 00:25:15.839
I like to say, like, oh, it means like getting your stuff done well.
00:25:16.079 --> 00:25:19.519
A true test of being because let me give you an instance.
00:25:19.599 --> 00:25:26.480
If you're watching this podcast and you say, Oh my god, I like to be I like his hard work, I like his tenacity, a huge chunk of the hard work is being able to do both.
00:25:26.559 --> 00:25:30.400
It's being able to say, Oh, I want to party tonight, but I'm also going to wake up and read tomorrow.
00:25:30.720 --> 00:25:33.920
Because discipline really matters.
00:25:34.079 --> 00:25:40.400
And I've worked with young people, I've been on set with young makeup artists, and they're just like, no, I want to do it my way.
00:25:40.480 --> 00:25:48.640
And I have to tell them that, like, you're not if you're not manifesting right now, you're being a trance, you need to get your stuff together.
00:25:48.880 --> 00:25:55.920
Because of the, I think there's a gap where younger people, we we haven't worked in spaces enough, in corporate spaces enough.
00:25:56.079 --> 00:25:59.359
So sometimes we just don't understand it, we just don't understand the culture of the workspace.
00:25:59.519 --> 00:26:03.680
It's like if I've been doing group projects with my classmates, I can come by 11, they'll forgive me.
00:26:03.759 --> 00:26:10.799
But it's like they've not realized that they've not realized, like, well, this is not your not in group group projects with your classmates anymore.
00:26:10.880 --> 00:26:13.039
You're dealing with your higher ups, and you need to treat them as such.
00:26:13.119 --> 00:26:14.799
So I think it's also a time thing.
00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:18.000
I think once you've worked, you've sacked they've sacked it from like three jobs.
00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:21.119
You just say, maybe I should love myself less.
00:26:21.519 --> 00:26:22.720
Maybe I can wake up early.
00:26:22.880 --> 00:26:26.720
So I think it's one of those things is we'll grow into it.
00:26:26.880 --> 00:26:31.599
I I hear I hear a lot of people criticize, you know, I mean, like we've said, Gen Z.
00:26:32.240 --> 00:26:39.920
And we had a conversation earlier on on a different episode here about how you know the internet raised a lot of you as well.
00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:40.400
Yeah, yeah.
00:26:40.640 --> 00:26:44.559
You know, we have a lot of parents didn't clock what was going on.
00:26:44.880 --> 00:26:45.920
Sir, I have a question then.
00:26:46.160 --> 00:26:46.559
Yes.
00:26:46.720 --> 00:26:48.960
Do you think it's our fault that we're raised by the internet?
00:26:49.519 --> 00:26:51.200
No, no, absolutely not.
00:26:51.359 --> 00:26:51.839
Actually, not.
00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:52.799
That's what we're saying.
00:26:52.960 --> 00:26:55.119
And a lot of parents didn't understand what was happening.
00:26:55.440 --> 00:26:56.000
Yes, yeah.
00:26:56.240 --> 00:27:01.359
The internet came when a lot of you were born, and social media came when you guys were in your formative TV.
00:27:01.680 --> 00:27:02.079
Yes.
00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:05.920
And parents were working, they didn't really realize how much of an impact this was.
00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:06.319
It was.
00:27:06.400 --> 00:27:06.559
Yep.
00:27:06.880 --> 00:27:11.039
By the time they realized what was going on, you guys are already done with university.
00:27:11.359 --> 00:27:12.960
We already know what to talk is our joke.
00:27:16.079 --> 00:27:24.480
And so you agree that that's a big reason why a lot of you are shaped the way you are.
00:27:24.960 --> 00:27:36.000
And we talk a lot about the dangers of social media now, and how you know those of us who are not parents of Jen Alpha, who is coming for you.
00:27:39.119 --> 00:27:40.000
They will show you.
00:27:40.319 --> 00:27:40.880
I can't wait.
00:27:41.759 --> 00:27:43.279
Jamie Back calling us old men.
00:27:43.759 --> 00:27:43.920
Okay.
00:27:45.839 --> 00:27:57.119
So good for us, excuse me, we've learned from your parents to say, okay, uh, these are the things that we can correct and how we limit exposure to the internet, to social media, and all of that.
00:27:57.759 --> 00:28:04.480
Now, my question being if we are worried about what it has done, isn't that then the truth that things are wrong?
00:28:05.039 --> 00:28:12.640
If we are worried about what we're trying to correct mistakes of what the internet or how the internet has shaped a generation.
00:28:13.119 --> 00:28:32.799
A lot of the tech moguls who told us then, a lot of their kids are your age or your generation, they didn't give them phones because they knew the dangers of these things, whether it was the no need to call brand names, but a lot of these gadgets and app owners kept their kids away from these things for a reason.
00:28:33.039 --> 00:28:37.359
Now, this generation was shipped by that, and we're trying to correct.
00:28:37.440 --> 00:28:39.039
We're gonna correct something that is good.
00:28:39.680 --> 00:28:45.839
So there must be something we've seen that we're trying to correct, which is why we're saying we're trying to raise our kids differently.
00:28:46.079 --> 00:28:51.839
So, my question basically being there has to be what went wrong, right?
00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:56.319
There must be something that have got that went wrong for us to be trying to correct it.
00:28:58.160 --> 00:29:08.960
It's a general question, but at the same time, it's pointing to the fact that the generalizations are coming from somewhere, right?
00:29:09.200 --> 00:29:14.720
A lot of us generalize about Gen Z, but it's because things are.
00:29:22.400 --> 00:29:25.519
Like an actual phone, maybe like when I was entering university.
00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:28.480
Whose phone were you using?
00:29:29.680 --> 00:29:33.759
My mom like touchlights for when you're 10 years old to be able to call mommy and daddy, right?
00:29:34.079 --> 00:29:37.039
Also, because I also didn't watch TV growing up, like at all.
00:29:37.279 --> 00:29:41.119
So I I had to um, and then I hated my parents, right?
00:29:41.359 --> 00:29:42.880
Jesus Christ, I didn't have toys, I didn't have to.
00:29:43.200 --> 00:29:45.200
I'm like, Daddy and mommy, you guys suck.
00:29:45.279 --> 00:29:48.319
Like, there's no way you guys are telling me this will shape me to be who I am.
00:29:48.880 --> 00:29:52.640
But it did uh help me streamline my ideas better.
00:29:52.799 --> 00:30:00.400
For instance, when I there's something I'm like watching Christmas videos, and I stumble on a video, and it's like obviously Chad GBC directly script.
00:30:00.559 --> 00:30:02.880
I'm like, oh, why did it like you can't?
00:30:03.039 --> 00:30:04.640
I know HGBC that read the script.
00:30:04.720 --> 00:30:06.000
You know HDBC read script.
00:30:06.160 --> 00:30:07.839
Meaning, we all know charge read this script.
00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:11.119
And I'm like, because you've lost a I like to say this.
00:30:11.359 --> 00:30:12.880
We don't have Chris Cartwinkers anymore.
00:30:13.119 --> 00:30:14.799
For instance, I didn't say it.
00:30:15.279 --> 00:30:19.279
So I don't think he's a generation thing, I think error.
00:30:19.519 --> 00:30:22.799
Yeah, I think our education system, but that's a different topic.
00:30:23.279 --> 00:30:29.680
I truly think our education system, and the more I even read about it, I'm like, oh, this is really bad.
00:30:30.079 --> 00:30:33.599
And for instance, you can ask me a question, and I can say, This is my opinion on it.
00:30:33.920 --> 00:30:35.039
I don't have to be influenced.
00:30:35.200 --> 00:30:40.480
You can present me with newer information, and I would say, I still think my opinion is my opinion.
00:30:40.559 --> 00:30:43.119
And I can also say, but I think I'm going to change my opinion.
00:30:43.279 --> 00:30:46.319
I think a lot of people are shaped off other people's opinions.
00:30:46.559 --> 00:30:48.960
So we don't necessarily think critically.
00:30:49.039 --> 00:30:50.720
You don't have, you don't introspect.
00:30:50.880 --> 00:30:57.359
As a as someone who grew up reading an Ide Blighton, reading encyclopedias, I would have like animals and fun stuff in it.
00:30:57.440 --> 00:30:58.799
It really helps me.
00:30:59.519 --> 00:31:01.359
It's really helped my cognitive thinking.
00:31:01.440 --> 00:31:04.160
I know how to imagine, I know how to solve problems.
00:31:04.319 --> 00:31:08.559
And not because I'm necessarily better, but because I wasn't overexposed.
00:31:08.960 --> 00:31:14.319
I feel like when you're overexposed to social media, because at the end of the day, um, I was having a concern with my friend.
00:31:14.640 --> 00:31:22.480
If this is the smartest generation can ever be, because we have education, we have knowledge that it's fingerprints at our fingertips, yes, we're still the dumbest generation can ever be.
00:31:22.640 --> 00:31:24.559
That's what happens when everybody said it himself.
00:31:25.200 --> 00:31:28.160
No, no, we will talk about no, but it's also a reality.
00:31:28.319 --> 00:31:31.599
Um society rewards fully, everybody becomes a fool.
00:31:31.680 --> 00:31:33.359
Yeah, and that's another thing I was thinking about.
00:31:33.519 --> 00:31:38.720
Because we have knowledge as our fingertips, it's like um if the water is always going to be here, I don't have to drink it.
00:31:39.200 --> 00:31:44.160
You're like, oh yeah, I'll eventually charge my phone, but you don't want to do the work that separates you.
00:31:44.319 --> 00:31:53.920
There's so many conversations I have with my friends that I'm like, a lot of where we are now is like as a result of overexposure, like it's just constant overexposure.
00:31:54.000 --> 00:31:59.200
There's certain things I watch on the internet, and I'm like, I hope someone out there doesn't believe this.
00:31:59.519 --> 00:32:05.839
Because so let me give you typical how typical creators will think engagement farming.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:12.079
I want to say the darnest, dumbest thing because I want people to interact with me.
00:32:12.319 --> 00:32:16.559
We've also come into a world where it's like um an episode of Black Mirror.
00:32:16.720 --> 00:32:22.480
People value engagements, like numbers, likes, comments over actual opinion.
00:32:22.559 --> 00:32:30.480
So, for instance, if you would meet me and say, Oh my god, instead of having personal discourse, you want to argue on a blog's comment section.
00:32:30.640 --> 00:32:36.720
There's also a lot of people trying to prove they're actually intelligent instead of just doing the work that helps them know better.
00:32:36.880 --> 00:32:39.279
So there's such a wrong way we go about things.
00:32:39.359 --> 00:32:47.519
Now, I was explaining to my friend that if you hear a take from someone, if I hear a take that I don't think is brilliant, I'm going to be like, I don't think that's a brilliant take.
00:32:47.680 --> 00:32:49.279
But I don't think the person is stupid.
00:32:49.519 --> 00:32:50.960
It could have just been a bad take.
00:32:51.119 --> 00:32:57.839
But the way social media is systemed right now, you want to gang up against the person, you want to be so vile.
00:32:57.920 --> 00:33:02.960
Everyone is looking so much for a hit moment that it's like it kind of washes away your humanity.
00:33:03.119 --> 00:33:07.119
And I said, particularly on ex when you insult people and like insulting.
00:33:08.799 --> 00:33:11.359
And the insult is so it is so vile.
00:33:11.440 --> 00:33:11.519
Yeah.
00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:14.720
In your head, you're like, yeah, 2K people agree with me.
00:33:14.880 --> 00:33:16.480
I think you're distasteful.
00:33:16.559 --> 00:33:16.720
Yeah.
00:33:16.880 --> 00:33:18.000
I don't think you should say distasteful.
00:33:18.079 --> 00:33:23.440
So I so I want to ask, let's press into this idea of how people are dragged on the internet.
00:33:23.839 --> 00:33:29.680
Um, whether it's dragging, whether it's trolling, whether it's even this issue of cancel culture, right?
00:33:30.319 --> 00:33:45.200
Um, it seems like the generation today is much quicker to kind of pass judgment on anybody online and say, we have decided this is who this person is, and we're going to drag them.
00:33:47.119 --> 00:34:04.400
And just drag them and put them there, and almost kind of holding people to their lowest moment, whereas everybody has low moments that you would not want broadcast to the whole world, but you've you've done things or been in situations that you're not the proudest of.
00:34:05.039 --> 00:34:12.960
And yet we turn our ire and our vitro on whoever's moment happens to be the latest on the screen.
00:34:14.159 --> 00:34:15.760
So, what are your thoughts there?
00:34:15.840 --> 00:34:19.360
Is there has that gone too far?
00:34:19.840 --> 00:34:22.079
You know, do we need to walk that back?
00:34:22.239 --> 00:34:23.440
How do we walk that back?
00:34:23.599 --> 00:34:26.239
How do we get people to maybe not be eh?
00:34:26.639 --> 00:34:27.599
Walking it back, go hard.
00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:28.719
You go hard, you know.
00:34:28.800 --> 00:34:29.519
But what are your thoughts?
00:34:29.760 --> 00:34:35.760
Cancel culture, trolling, you know, holding people to these standards.
00:34:35.840 --> 00:34:40.000
And it it seems like it's made places like X or Twitter.
00:34:40.480 --> 00:34:40.800
Thank you.
00:34:41.039 --> 00:34:47.280
Um, it it a toxic enough place that some people are saying, like me, I don't I don't go on X anymore.
00:34:47.599 --> 00:34:51.360
Just because it's just like I'm I'm done with the platform for now.
00:34:51.519 --> 00:34:52.719
I don't even have access to it.
00:34:54.639 --> 00:35:05.199
I know I'm losing this show because when my youngers is that they tweet at me.
00:35:05.360 --> 00:35:08.639
I don't tweet, but yes, talk to us a bit about that.
00:35:08.800 --> 00:35:19.119
I think it's very scary because I, as someone who, as a creator, you know, as a public figure, you're going to be open to a lot of people will talk about your life.
00:35:19.199 --> 00:35:21.599
Yeah, people will drag you, people will disagree with you.
00:35:21.760 --> 00:35:30.719
But there's certain times I see them, you know, even just dragging other creators or other public figures, and and I'm just like so.
00:35:30.960 --> 00:35:33.920
For me, I don't like negative.
00:35:34.000 --> 00:35:35.280
I so entirely.
00:35:35.360 --> 00:35:38.239
So if you're dragging someone, I don't even want to see it, I don't want to look at it.
00:35:38.559 --> 00:35:42.880
But there's sometimes I'm just like humans are meant to make mistakes, right?
00:35:43.039 --> 00:35:46.719
Um, there's something I read one time perfection is the death of humanity.
00:35:46.960 --> 00:35:51.840
And so even when I'm trying to ensure something looks perfect, I'm like, there's nothing like perfection.
00:35:52.079 --> 00:36:06.639
When you I believe in accountability, people should be accountable, but you shouldn't be accountable to the worst version of yourself, in a sense that I can have an opinion, and I'm allowed to change my opinions because I am a person.
00:36:06.800 --> 00:36:15.920
I always tell people, like, when whenever I'm asked this, I'm like, well, if it was your mom being dragged, you would make an excuse for her, wouldn't you?
00:36:16.159 --> 00:36:19.519
It's so easy to be a lawyer when it's yourself, but to be a judge when it's others.
00:36:19.840 --> 00:36:25.840
So even with me, it doesn't when you drag me, I'm just like, I could have been wrong.
00:36:26.079 --> 00:36:26.639
And that's it.
00:36:26.719 --> 00:36:28.159
I will forgive myself for being young.
00:36:28.239 --> 00:36:28.880
I'm learning.
00:36:28.960 --> 00:36:30.960
And no matter the age you are, you are learning.
00:36:31.039 --> 00:36:34.320
Like it's such, there's no, it's not, it's not finished.
00:36:34.400 --> 00:36:35.840
Like being opinions are not finished.
00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:36.880
I can always change them.
00:36:37.039 --> 00:36:42.239
So I'm very, even when they drag people, I'm always like, the good thing is street no gay memory, they'll forget.
00:36:43.039 --> 00:36:43.519
Last, last.
00:36:43.760 --> 00:36:44.880
I mean, like, I beg John.
00:36:45.440 --> 00:36:52.719
In all of these, I I really, really do respect to a large extent Gen Z's for a lot of things.
00:36:52.800 --> 00:36:58.639
There's a lot they've done to the world that we can never take away from them.
00:36:59.760 --> 00:37:01.679
Opening our eyes to a lot of things.
00:37:01.840 --> 00:37:08.639
Whether I'm talking about reclimates, whether it's the need to movement, whether it's just being self-aware.
00:37:09.119 --> 00:37:16.800
They might be extreme on some levels, but these are conversations that a lot of us were scared to have or didn't have the audacity to have in the past.
00:37:17.360 --> 00:37:27.840
Sometimes the lack of ambition is misinterpreted as or loving yourself or being more in tune with yourself is a lack of ambition.
00:37:28.800 --> 00:37:41.119
Um, whereas, like you said, back in the day, we were made to keep going and don't complain, which I mean helps you achieve, but at the same time, the downside is at what cost, you know.
00:37:41.280 --> 00:37:41.440
Yeah.
00:37:41.760 --> 00:37:43.119
Interesting stats I saw.
00:37:43.280 --> 00:37:44.880
This was by the UK, by the way.
00:37:45.119 --> 00:37:46.400
Deloitte in the UK.
00:37:46.480 --> 00:37:50.320
So is only six percent of Gen Z say their goal is leadership.
00:37:51.360 --> 00:37:53.280
Only six percent say their goal is leadership.
00:37:53.440 --> 00:37:55.920
They're not chasing titles the way other generations did.
00:37:56.000 --> 00:38:02.159
So it's more about if I'm a leader, fine, but more importantly, it's my own sort of happiness.
00:38:03.039 --> 00:38:06.159
Um this was a very interesting one.
00:38:06.320 --> 00:38:06.960
98%.
00:38:07.519 --> 00:38:09.360
This was a Nigerian study, by the way.
00:38:09.679 --> 00:38:11.679
But it was done by the International Trademark Association.
00:38:11.760 --> 00:38:16.639
98% of Gen Zs say being true to themselves is most important.
00:38:17.920 --> 00:38:20.800
90% say they define their own moral code.
00:38:20.880 --> 00:38:24.559
Now that's why do you set your own rules?
00:38:24.639 --> 00:38:27.599
Well, I guess uh you could debate that.
00:38:27.760 --> 00:38:38.079
Um, but I found that 98% very interesting because almost every Gen Z you meet, it means what's most important to them is you know themselves.
00:38:38.320 --> 00:38:46.880
They're not necessarily chasing things, which also brings me to this 83% care more about the usefulness of a product than the brand name.
00:38:47.039 --> 00:38:50.400
That's one thing I think a lot of the other generations were caught up in.
00:38:50.719 --> 00:38:53.519
Oh, this is good.
00:38:55.760 --> 00:39:00.159
Or you want to buy an outfit and you're buying the label as against functionality.
00:39:00.320 --> 00:39:02.880
There's also the counter-argument is that Gen Z no get money.
00:39:02.960 --> 00:39:05.039
So they're not chasing brands.
00:39:05.119 --> 00:39:05.519
We don't have muscles.
00:39:05.760 --> 00:39:08.800
They're just buying what works, they're not necessarily chasing brands.
00:39:09.119 --> 00:39:13.679
But my point being, I like them for that, for a lot of things.
00:39:13.840 --> 00:39:21.199
A lot of what the world is first of all, they're overwhelmingly in the dominant population now, especially in Nigeria.
00:39:21.280 --> 00:39:24.400
Yeah, so they dictate a lot of the culture, right?
00:39:25.039 --> 00:39:28.719
But that has also helped us understand a lot more about ourselves.
00:39:29.039 --> 00:39:43.280
While we struggle with the employee who comes in five hours late and tells you I had a late night or a late morning, there's also a lot to learn in what if I took a break today just because I need it.
00:39:43.440 --> 00:39:45.519
As I guess I must show up, I must show up.
00:39:46.079 --> 00:39:46.559
You know.
00:39:46.719 --> 00:39:56.159
Um, so I guess there's counter arguments to that side, which is what brings me now to I don't know if you have a question for us, but before you ask us questions, I just want to know what do you even think of.
00:39:56.239 --> 00:40:02.960
I know you said you don't blame millennials or whatever it is for, but how do you view the generation ahead?
00:40:03.280 --> 00:40:04.800
Millennials, Gen X.
00:40:04.960 --> 00:40:06.559
I think Gen X Gen X is.
00:40:06.719 --> 00:40:07.599
I think that's fantastic.
00:40:07.920 --> 00:40:08.000
Yes.
00:40:08.079 --> 00:40:09.360
Is that Gen X Baby Boomer?
00:40:09.760 --> 00:40:10.800
Baby Boomer is after.
00:40:10.960 --> 00:40:13.440
So Baby Boomer first, then Gen X, then Genomin.
00:40:14.559 --> 00:40:21.039
Yeah, Gen X is up until it should be 78 to 60 something, I think.
00:40:21.360 --> 00:40:23.039
Then before that is Boomers.
00:40:23.440 --> 00:40:25.920
So I think it's Gen X, yeah.
00:40:26.559 --> 00:40:28.239
How do you view them?
00:40:28.719 --> 00:40:36.239
Do you I mean there's something to learn from everybody, but what do you think of this generation?
00:40:36.400 --> 00:40:39.199
Because they generalize about you guys a lot, so you must have opinions.
00:40:40.159 --> 00:40:41.440
Be honest, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:40:41.599 --> 00:40:43.199
Funny enough, I'm pretty honest.
00:40:43.360 --> 00:40:46.239
I like to act like I lie, but I rarely ever lie.
00:40:46.880 --> 00:40:57.360
Um, I think funny enough, I know Jesus will be like, oh no, but I think they are really strong, especially in Denish, I mean in the career part I'm taking.
00:40:57.519 --> 00:41:00.320
When I see older people who stayed, it's hard.
00:41:00.639 --> 00:41:05.840
As someone who has been made to think career, my career is very optional.
00:41:05.920 --> 00:41:11.280
People like to make it seem like they like to deny the work that it is, but it is a lot of work.
00:41:11.519 --> 00:41:14.800
So when I see genetics who have done this, I'm like, damn.
00:41:15.360 --> 00:41:16.400
It takes such discipline.
00:41:16.800 --> 00:41:18.000
You're talking about influencing now.
00:41:18.239 --> 00:41:18.400
Yes.
00:41:18.480 --> 00:41:20.320
So media space influencing everything.
00:41:20.400 --> 00:41:23.280
I'm like, okay, it takes such discipline to actually lock in.
00:41:23.360 --> 00:41:28.480
I also think as someone who, you know, I think, oh yeah, I'm gonna love myself, I'm gonna quit that job.
00:41:28.639 --> 00:41:32.960
I sometimes remember that there are people older than me who could have, but they didn't.
00:41:33.119 --> 00:41:39.199
So I know that, oh, if this person can persevere, that job might be shit, but I'm taking my salary.
00:41:39.920 --> 00:41:43.280
And I think it's such a it's such a great way to tell a story.
00:41:43.440 --> 00:41:47.119
Not radicality is not always quitting, sometimes it's staying.
00:41:47.360 --> 00:42:01.280
And when I think about it, I'm like, wow, everyone fights things differently, and genuinely, this is not to patronize anybody, but and even with my parents who are felt like, oh, you stayed too long at that job, you should have left.
00:42:01.360 --> 00:42:02.880
You you were quiet for too long.
00:42:03.039 --> 00:42:04.719
The silence couldn't have been easy.
00:42:05.039 --> 00:42:12.559
And so for me, it's such a way of thinking, like, wow, sometimes perhaps the sacrifices they made are the reasons we can't afford to be so outspoken.
00:42:12.800 --> 00:42:17.119
So I look at it with such reverence, like, wow, you guys are so cool.
00:42:17.760 --> 00:42:18.559
Wow, yes.
00:42:18.639 --> 00:42:20.800
I think also because you guys are so rich.
00:42:20.960 --> 00:42:22.000
So you guys must have saved.
00:42:22.320 --> 00:42:22.480
Amen.
00:42:22.719 --> 00:42:28.559
No, I don't know about that, but it's just like, oh my god, so we can't save because also I'm a generation that's like, Leave.
00:42:29.039 --> 00:42:32.159
Oh, I'm gonna live for today, you'll live for today.
00:42:32.239 --> 00:42:36.159
Yeah, so I'm like, I know, only for today, oh may I put money in my biggest vest too.
00:42:36.239 --> 00:42:43.599
No, no, no, no, it's such a yeah, it's a reality check, it's a very important, it takes away the sorry.
00:42:43.679 --> 00:42:44.719
I was going to ask.
00:42:44.880 --> 00:42:54.239
Okay, sorry, I was also gonna say the reason um about the moral code, um, when you said it, it struck me because it makes sense, even the leadership thing.
00:42:54.559 --> 00:42:56.400
A lot of people don't want to be leaders anymore, right?
00:42:56.559 --> 00:43:01.280
Because systematically, a lot of young people hate the government, so even around the world, so leadership is seen negative.
00:43:02.159 --> 00:43:04.400
Yes, it's like I can't choose.
00:43:04.719 --> 00:43:07.519
Like realistically, we always feel like we can't choose.
00:43:07.599 --> 00:43:10.880
And I always wonder like, how does it transcend the older we get?
00:43:11.199 --> 00:43:14.239
Because eventually, a lot of people who are old are going to leave power.
00:43:14.480 --> 00:43:15.679
So, does it leave a gap?
00:43:15.760 --> 00:43:17.679
Or do we all finally say I have to be?
00:43:18.159 --> 00:43:18.800
That's all I mean.
00:43:18.880 --> 00:43:22.880
But the moral code, I know a lot of young people actually create their moral code.
00:43:23.039 --> 00:43:30.400
Um, growing up, I thought the basics X, Y, Z, you know, be a Christian, be good, be X, Y, Z.
00:43:30.480 --> 00:43:35.920
But the more, the older you grow, you realize how there is no black and whites.
00:43:36.079 --> 00:43:41.440
Like, unfortunately, like you're, you would meet people who go to church every day that would be the unkindest people you've ever met.
00:43:41.599 --> 00:43:45.440
So for us, it's such a it's such a I have to dictate my own moral code.
00:43:45.519 --> 00:43:52.079
Like, I, and that's what leads to such a strong sense of self, which leads to why young people can be so audacious.
00:43:52.159 --> 00:43:54.960
Because it's such a I've had to create my stuff from the ground up.
00:43:55.039 --> 00:43:55.840
Like I've had to listen to.
00:43:56.079 --> 00:43:59.760
So, where does that leave God or your relationship with God in?
00:44:00.239 --> 00:44:03.119
That mix at least in my dissenter.
00:44:03.599 --> 00:44:04.239
Very here.
00:44:04.719 --> 00:44:21.519
But I also think a lot of young people see religion more as because the reason I ask is um I read a study recently where I watched something about saying that Gen Zs are turning to God more becoming more causality than almost any other generation before them.
00:44:22.559 --> 00:44:27.360
Which means like something is happening in the generation where Gen Zs are like, oh I didn't find something.
00:44:27.599 --> 00:44:28.320
I just go back home.
00:44:28.719 --> 00:44:32.480
So where where's I think for so I'll use me as a case study.
00:44:32.559 --> 00:44:32.639
Okay.
00:44:32.800 --> 00:44:38.800
I after church, sometimes I just go, there are certain preachers who I really like their teachings, and I'll just watch their stuff.
00:44:39.199 --> 00:44:47.599
I also don't necessarily might agree with everything they say, but I also have the reality that yes, whilst I enjoy this preacher and I think he's a great man of God, he's a man.
00:44:48.079 --> 00:44:49.440
He can factually be wrong.
00:44:49.599 --> 00:44:56.639
As opposed to the older generation who would take the preacher's teachings who clean a sinker, we can be objective and be like, ah, I think that's nuanced.
00:44:56.800 --> 00:45:00.159
There's certain times that my pastor says some things I'm like, I don't agree with that.
00:45:00.400 --> 00:45:02.159
And I'm not scared to say I don't agree with that.
00:45:02.400 --> 00:45:03.360
I don't agree with it.
00:45:04.000 --> 00:45:06.079
I think you can say, oh, based on the Bible.
00:45:06.239 --> 00:45:07.360
I'm like, I don't know.
00:45:07.440 --> 00:45:08.559
It's a reason it's like that.
00:45:08.719 --> 00:45:11.920
And the thing is, if you present me with new information, I'm okay with being wrong.
00:45:12.159 --> 00:45:14.559
But we are more, we can object.
00:45:14.800 --> 00:45:17.280
The reason we can't object is just comfortable asking questions.
00:45:17.440 --> 00:45:18.320
Yeah, we can't challenge.
00:45:18.639 --> 00:45:20.480
Like, why do I have to take everything that you say?
00:45:20.800 --> 00:45:24.400
So I think it's I think it also makes us turn to God more.
00:45:24.480 --> 00:45:27.440
Because we're like, okay, let me go to the source that has the answers.
00:45:27.599 --> 00:45:28.000
You know what?
00:45:28.400 --> 00:45:35.199
Because realistically, there's like the thing is that growing up, I grew up in Benin, and I'll go to some churches and they'll say, Oh, this person is possessed, and you're flogging the person.
00:45:35.440 --> 00:45:40.159
I'm like, yeah, yeah, I I don't that doesn't track.
00:45:40.400 --> 00:45:40.880
Yeah, yeah.
00:45:41.039 --> 00:45:42.880
I'm like, not coming back.
00:45:43.280 --> 00:45:47.599
And because we could, because this happened, it made us able to say, like, oh no, I want to introspect.
00:45:47.679 --> 00:45:49.280
I'm like, I don't think all you're saying is right.
00:45:49.360 --> 00:45:52.960
I and I I really like when I meet people who encourage.
00:45:53.119 --> 00:45:54.320
I shouldn't be a dummy.
00:45:54.639 --> 00:45:56.000
I should be able to ask why.
00:45:56.159 --> 00:45:58.800
If you're training a child to not ask why, that's a fundamental problem.
00:45:58.880 --> 00:46:01.199
You're training someone that would never ask a why in their life.
00:46:01.840 --> 00:46:03.599
You should your kids should be able to say, Oh, why?
00:46:03.679 --> 00:46:04.719
Oh no, I don't think so.
00:46:04.880 --> 00:46:05.840
I mean, no, I don't think.
00:46:06.079 --> 00:46:10.320
In fact, the reason I read is not to be telling, it's to know that you are wrong.
00:46:10.800 --> 00:46:15.199
Primarily, the reason I'm a lawyer is I want to tell you that do you know this thing I didn't easy legal?
00:46:15.280 --> 00:46:17.280
You this stupid girl, do you this stupid boy?
00:46:17.599 --> 00:46:19.679
And you must train people who are disruptors.
00:46:19.840 --> 00:46:21.039
Like it's okay to be a disruptor.
00:46:21.360 --> 00:46:22.960
So yeah, interestingly.
00:46:24.880 --> 00:46:25.519
Look there first.
00:46:26.320 --> 00:46:26.880
This is true.
00:46:27.199 --> 00:46:29.599
Mentality with Abuka, I'm just here as a friend.
00:46:30.000 --> 00:46:31.519
I think I wanna have two questions.
00:46:31.679 --> 00:46:37.119
Okay, and this first question is very nuanced.
00:46:37.679 --> 00:46:42.960
Do you think it was harder to be a man in your time than it is right now?
00:46:44.320 --> 00:46:45.360
What's the second question?
00:46:46.559 --> 00:46:49.760
Oh, we'll do the first one first harder.
00:46:52.320 --> 00:46:54.559
That was a very nuanced question, like you said.
00:46:55.599 --> 00:47:09.199
I don't know what harder means, but I think we grew up more with all of these rules from a generation that was more traditional, I want to believe, than your generation's parents.
00:47:09.840 --> 00:47:22.320
So we grew up with fathers and mothers and a community that did things a certain way because I mean my dad, for example, didn't leave his community until he was done with the secondary school.
00:47:22.639 --> 00:47:27.840
He's fully formed, you know, Kija, which is my village.
00:47:28.159 --> 00:47:36.320
A lot of people have those stories where up until the 50s, a lot of our parents are in that range.
00:47:37.360 --> 00:47:42.480
They grew up being told certain things and being told how things will be done a certain way.
00:47:42.719 --> 00:47:44.960
So they gave us what they knew.
00:47:45.679 --> 00:47:55.280
Um a lot of Gen Z's parents are Gen Xers, um, Gen Xers are a lot more aware.
00:47:55.519 --> 00:47:58.639
Now, they may not have been the most aware, but they knew better.
00:47:59.280 --> 00:48:06.000
I think it put the pressure maybe a little less on your generation of men.
00:48:06.320 --> 00:48:14.320
So on the one hand, I would say it was probably tougher for us because there were rules you couldn't go break away from.
00:48:14.559 --> 00:48:17.039
Men should do da, da, da, da, da.
00:48:17.519 --> 00:48:20.000
And you were meant to sort of follow.
00:48:20.159 --> 00:48:24.480
There wasn't a lot of room for expression of yourself.
00:48:25.519 --> 00:48:35.840
Yes, social media has changed things, but we grew up in a time when not many people could have told their parents at your age that I'm gonna be in law school, but I'm also gonna be an influencer.
00:48:36.159 --> 00:48:37.519
That was like capital sin.
00:48:38.800 --> 00:48:40.079
Do what you're supposed to do.
00:48:40.480 --> 00:48:46.079
Stick to your so on that front, I would say yes, it was probably tougher on us.
00:48:46.400 --> 00:48:58.719
But, like I said, because you also said it's nuanced for your generation, there's a belief that you guys have been given more, probably better equipped with the times.
00:48:59.360 --> 00:49:04.880
Um you should know better, you also have more freedoms to express.
00:49:06.239 --> 00:49:19.519
Um, does that make it harder for you guys to achieve in a space where we compete, we necessarily weren't competing, we're just giving okay, go and do this.
00:49:19.599 --> 00:49:27.280
But you guys are now in a space where you've been equipped, but also everybody has been equipped, so yeah, now competition is tougher.
00:49:27.920 --> 00:49:41.840
Um, everybody's kind of doing the same things, um, whatever it is in the past, finding knowledge or knowing things, you have to sort of go find it now.
00:49:41.920 --> 00:49:47.039
It's like it's like it's not like okay, what are you gonna do with this?
00:49:47.119 --> 00:49:51.039
And it's like everybody's facing that semi-level of pressure.
00:49:51.199 --> 00:50:01.440
So, I guess on the competition level, it's harder, maybe for you guys, but on the equipped being equipped and being thrown into the wild, maybe we had it a little rough.
00:50:01.679 --> 00:50:02.000
I don't know.
00:50:02.800 --> 00:50:08.480
Yeah, I I would I would agree um in the way that you answered it.
00:50:08.960 --> 00:50:24.719
What I would want to add to this question is really reframing the question because I think the challenge that we have is when we when we ask things like, was it harder to be a man in your time than in our time?
00:50:24.960 --> 00:50:29.519
You know, was it easier for your generation or easier for ours?
00:50:30.320 --> 00:50:35.840
You you fall into this trap of almost kind of competing between generations.
00:50:36.239 --> 00:50:42.480
And it's just like the people that say, Oh, was Michael Jordan the greatest basketball player of all time?
00:50:42.639 --> 00:50:43.199
Yes, he was.
00:50:43.360 --> 00:50:47.599
Or was it of course he wasn't, or was it LeBron James, right?
00:50:48.079 --> 00:50:58.480
The reality is the times are different, the challenges are different, the access is different, the expectations are different, the rules are different.
00:50:58.719 --> 00:51:10.960
So there's no real way to have a true comparison because those people, the parameters are not the same, so you can't have an honest like evaluation when you're trying to compare.
00:51:11.840 --> 00:51:13.920
Everybody likes to feel like they suffer the most, exactly.
00:51:14.159 --> 00:51:22.400
And I don't I don't think that generations can truly compare and compete with each other when the terms on engagement are so different.
00:51:22.960 --> 00:51:51.039
So, and that's why I think personally, and I could be wrong, but I think our generation is probably the most fortunate because it's like we're right in the middle of the older generations that carry a lot of wisdom and the younger generations that carry a lot of perspective, and that I think has made our generation probably more equipped to be parents than any generation before, right?
00:51:51.280 --> 00:51:56.559
Because there was a time I remember when cell phones be became a thing.
00:51:56.800 --> 00:52:00.960
I remember my dad had the first phone like ever.
00:52:01.679 --> 00:52:04.159
And it was like a handset that you were carrying to the car.
00:52:04.400 --> 00:52:04.960
You know what I mean?
00:52:05.119 --> 00:52:05.679
I remember the internet.
00:52:06.079 --> 00:52:07.519
I remember when the internet was born.
00:52:07.599 --> 00:52:10.320
Yeah, like I remember the first time Google launched.
00:52:10.639 --> 00:52:12.079
Remember the first time I opened an email.
00:52:12.159 --> 00:52:13.039
So exactly.
00:52:13.119 --> 00:52:17.119
Like I remember when I first opened an email address, I remember when you had to log on on it.
00:52:17.360 --> 00:52:37.679
So it's like we lived in that space between like the wisdom and the conservatism and the resilience and all of that of the older generation, and then just the energy and the perspective and the new ways of seeing things, and even the negative side, we saw what life did to our parents and what life has done to you.
00:52:37.840 --> 00:52:41.840
So now I can have children and say, guys, I don't want either.
00:52:42.079 --> 00:52:47.519
I was gonna say, Zaya, you're only getting screen time, you know, on the weekend from this time to this time.
00:52:47.760 --> 00:52:48.079
Why?
00:52:48.239 --> 00:52:53.360
Because I've seen what living on the internet has done to Gen Z.
00:52:54.000 --> 00:52:59.679
And at the same time, I can say, hey, Banky W, one day a week I need a Sabbath day.
00:52:59.840 --> 00:53:00.079
Why?
00:53:00.159 --> 00:53:10.320
Because I saw my parents walk themselves to the bone and not being able to be present at home and what that happened, you know, what happened to their generation and what it did to their kids who didn't have parents around.
00:53:10.480 --> 00:53:18.880
So I feel like we living in that space has made us say, hey, we're trying to learn the lessons from here, but see the perspectives from here and just try and do better.
00:53:19.199 --> 00:53:25.840
And ultimately, every generation inherits the world as it is passed down.
00:53:26.079 --> 00:53:28.960
We also inherit the problems as they're passed down.
00:53:29.199 --> 00:53:30.320
We inherit all of that.
00:53:31.039 --> 00:53:35.760
The responsibility now on you is to say, how do we build better?
00:53:36.320 --> 00:53:46.159
And so I think that's something that in general, the millennial generation, just by virtue of when we came in, we've had to reckon with that.
00:53:46.480 --> 00:53:54.159
And I think my my hope for the Gen Z generation is that they don't, they they've and you grew up on the internet, right?
00:53:54.239 --> 00:53:58.800
So for a lot of people, the internet taught you more than your parents ever did.
00:53:58.960 --> 00:54:13.840
So it's like hopefully, somewhere in the mix of all of that, you can find your way back to God, find your way back to this place of saying, there's some things that the internet has taught me to embrace that are not the best.
00:54:14.320 --> 00:54:19.119
And there's some things that I am assuming the older generations don't understand, that maybe there's some wisdom there.
00:54:19.280 --> 00:54:31.599
So if you if you can somehow find your place to the place of learning, find your way to the place of learning where you're picking up the best of everything and dropping the worst, then the world ends up okay.
00:54:32.079 --> 00:54:33.280
So that's what I would say.
00:54:35.360 --> 00:54:35.760
Thank you.
00:54:36.000 --> 00:54:36.320
Very interesting.
00:54:38.159 --> 00:54:45.840
So, I mean, the second question was answered, but this is not really like a question, but just a little if you could tell me one thing for me now.
00:54:46.000 --> 00:54:49.519
I mean, this podcast, so you can tell Jeff too.
00:54:49.679 --> 00:54:55.360
But one thing you think I should know as someone who is going to just grow older, amen.
00:54:56.000 --> 00:54:59.280
So one thing you think I should know doesn't have to be phenomenal.
00:54:59.679 --> 00:55:04.480
So, this question you asked is very interesting because um we're gonna go to our live original moment, okay?
00:55:04.559 --> 00:55:08.800
And we got this email, which kind of ties into this question.
00:55:09.119 --> 00:55:14.320
And it says, Hi, I've been thinking about the pressure to have it all by 30.
00:55:16.079 --> 00:55:19.280
There's this fear that if you haven't made it by then, you failed.
00:55:19.519 --> 00:55:25.519
How do you deal with the anxiety of the ticking clock while still staying true to your own timing?
00:55:25.679 --> 00:55:27.840
We'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
00:55:28.719 --> 00:55:30.719
That's what I that's that's the one thing I know.
00:55:30.800 --> 00:55:40.480
I always tell younger people when I meet them, for some reason, especially guys, because if it seems like it's a lot of guys who come to me with after that.
00:55:41.840 --> 00:55:50.000
Probably because I don't know if the pressure is more for the kind of I meet someone and they are so worried, and I ask them how old they are, they say they're 26.
00:55:50.320 --> 00:55:52.639
And I'm like, you have 26.
00:55:52.719 --> 00:55:55.039
I was I know it feels old, I was clueless.
00:55:55.440 --> 00:55:58.960
There's a lot that you you you don't know, and it's okay.
00:55:59.199 --> 00:56:01.199
You know, there's a lot that you don't know, and that's fine.
00:56:01.599 --> 00:56:11.519
And I think that's the one thing I I don't know, I don't know how old you are, I don't know what your plans in life are, but I think it's okay to not know what your plans are yet.
00:56:11.760 --> 00:56:15.199
What matters that you're on course or you're on the path to something?
00:56:15.360 --> 00:56:18.719
What I usually don't like is when I meet people and I'm like, so what are you doing?
00:56:18.800 --> 00:56:20.559
And they're not doing anything at all.
00:56:20.800 --> 00:56:24.880
Um if it's because of the way the economy is set up, I can get it.
00:56:25.119 --> 00:56:27.280
You're actively trying to actually make an effort.
00:56:27.360 --> 00:56:34.320
But I mean more education, you find someone who's just like, yeah, I just, you know, I want to blow or something that's just superficial.
00:56:34.800 --> 00:56:43.760
But the one thing I will say to you is yes, you might not have all the time in the world, but you do have time to figure stuff out.
00:56:44.159 --> 00:56:51.280
I feel like more than millennials, maybe, and maybe any other generation, Gen Z put a lot of pressure on themselves.
00:56:51.519 --> 00:56:58.639
Maybe social media makes that worse because you're seeing the way the world is moving and your peers are sort of doing things.
00:56:58.800 --> 00:57:08.000
You feel like in your mid-20s you should have bought a house and bought your mommy house on top of that, and then had this wedding that would trend for three weeks.
00:57:08.159 --> 00:57:10.880
You know, all of these things like that's not really what life is about.
00:57:11.039 --> 00:57:19.599
So just understanding that you are you're not late to anything, just it will happen, but just be on the path, and you most likely figure things.
00:57:19.679 --> 00:57:22.559
I didn't figure a lot out until my 30s, yeah.
00:57:23.119 --> 00:57:26.320
And that's just the it that's the story of a lot of people.
00:57:26.639 --> 00:57:28.079
Oh, a lot of people, yeah.
00:57:28.400 --> 00:57:34.000
Did you education you find people who've life just falls in place for them at 24?
00:57:34.559 --> 00:57:44.159
But on very rare occasions, though, very rare, but okay, but most people in their 30s is when it starts making sense when a lot of things start making sense.
00:57:44.239 --> 00:57:44.880
Yes, sorry.
00:57:45.199 --> 00:57:46.960
I I think I think you spoke very well.
00:57:47.119 --> 00:58:00.480
Um so this question of the pressure of time and saying I should be here by now, or I should have this figured out by now, I should have bought the house, or I should be married, or whatever the case may be.
00:58:00.719 --> 00:58:10.480
And it's just this this um this thing that's it's like this pressure that society and sometimes that pressure is even more internal than anything else.
00:58:10.719 --> 00:58:17.679
And the the best analogy that I can say is there's a there's such a thing as time difference, right?
00:58:17.840 --> 00:58:22.159
So that Nigeria is at five o'clock, five p.m.
00:58:22.320 --> 00:58:24.639
right now, doesn't mean that Yankee will not get there.
00:58:25.280 --> 00:58:27.360
It just means it's not time yet.
00:58:27.920 --> 00:58:40.559
And if you're looking at it and saying, ah, but this person and and social media makes it so hard because you are seeing the highlights of people's lives all over the world at the same time.
00:58:40.800 --> 00:58:55.599
And you're not seeing the demons that they're battling, you're not seeing the downsides a lot of times, you're not seeing the real story behind everything, you're just seeing what somebody, a curated version of life that then makes you feel like you're not where you should be.
00:58:56.079 --> 00:59:04.960
Um, so I would echo what he said first of all, which is just to kind of understand that you may not have it all figured out yet.
00:59:05.280 --> 00:59:10.800
And yes, you do have to be conscious about time because you don't want to wake up one day and be 55 and you're still trying to figure it out.
00:59:11.039 --> 00:59:17.599
But you probably have more time than you realize, and your life will change so much.
00:59:17.760 --> 00:59:19.119
Yep, bruh.
00:59:19.519 --> 00:59:22.960
I studied engineering in university, he studied law.
00:59:23.119 --> 00:59:31.679
I don't work for an engineering company, he's not a lawyer today, and even the things, and even the things that we have done have changed over the years.
00:59:31.840 --> 00:59:39.280
Like, if I was sitting here 10, 15 years ago, you would describe me with a much different job than than you would today.
00:59:39.440 --> 00:59:41.679
So life will change, it will evolve.
00:59:41.840 --> 00:59:56.239
For me, I think the most important thing is first have a relationship with God, and not everybody is meant to be a pastor, not everybody's meant to have it, you know, it's not about perfection, it's really about progression, it's about saying, I need this.
00:59:57.679 --> 01:00:04.480
You know, you said yourself that when it comes to ourselves, we want to be a lawyer, but when it comes to everybody else, we want to be a judge.
01:00:04.880 --> 01:00:12.079
The reality is Christ said we are all called to be witnesses, we're not called to be pastors, all of us.
01:00:12.239 --> 01:00:16.960
We're not called to be judge, executioner, not even lawyer, we're just called to be witnesses.
01:00:17.280 --> 01:00:22.239
A witness is there because of evidence and testimony, as in this is what has happened to me.
01:00:22.880 --> 01:00:28.000
And for a witness to be there means that witness has had some kind of personal experience that makes it valid in the courtroom.
01:00:28.480 --> 01:00:37.360
So let's walk back from this place of trying to be judge, jury, executioner, or even lawyer, and just say, What's my own testimony?
01:00:37.519 --> 01:00:38.639
What's my own evidence?
01:00:39.280 --> 01:00:40.000
What have I learned?
01:00:40.159 --> 01:00:41.199
What's God teaching me?
01:00:41.519 --> 01:00:42.400
What is life like?
01:00:42.559 --> 01:01:04.400
And then when you are called upon, you can give evidence and testimony and leave the judging to God and leave all of those other roles, and just first find that relationship with God, and then in finding that, find yourself who God created you to be, and just keep working on that version of yourself to be better every day, and eventually things will fall in line.
01:01:07.840 --> 01:01:08.400
Yes, yes, yes.
01:01:08.559 --> 01:01:10.159
No, sorry, that was that was for millennials.
01:01:11.199 --> 01:01:12.159
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
01:01:12.800 --> 01:01:13.760
Clock it, clock it.
01:01:14.079 --> 01:01:15.360
I just showed my age again.
01:01:17.119 --> 01:01:18.639
Let me ask you, I I have a question.
01:01:18.880 --> 01:01:21.679
Yeah, um it's a question for you.
01:01:21.840 --> 01:01:31.199
Okay, so do you feel pressure to be relevant to the Gen Z generation?
01:01:32.079 --> 01:01:38.639
And I say that because you are a very unique person in the media space, right?
01:01:38.800 --> 01:01:42.480
You from you know, you're like you're one of a kind.
01:01:42.559 --> 01:01:53.519
You will do rubbing minds and discuss like leadership and policy and issues in society, then you turn around and you do big brother, and it's like the most popular thing on African television.
01:01:53.599 --> 01:01:55.119
Then you come here and we'll talk million.
01:01:56.719 --> 01:01:57.760
Then you now do fashionista.
01:01:58.559 --> 01:02:04.639
So I you know, and I say this because I for a long time I dyed my beard.
01:02:05.039 --> 01:02:12.639
I died for like easily five years, just because I didn't want people to put me in this box of like old people.
01:02:12.800 --> 01:02:15.039
They say this was an hour old, you understand?
01:02:15.280 --> 01:02:22.960
So I will I wanted to make sure that I'll still, you know, when they say, Ah, Uncle Banke, I say, hey, hey, now when they say Uncle Banky, I say, How are you, my dear?
01:02:23.599 --> 01:02:31.920
But it's but it's this pressure to like still feel relevant or be, you know, still feel young or whatever the case may be.
01:02:32.159 --> 01:02:39.599
And I, like, at least in the case of my beard, I got to the point where because my wife had been saying, leave this thing, leave this thing, that she likes it.
01:02:39.840 --> 01:02:41.679
So I literally got to the place last year.
01:02:41.760 --> 01:02:44.639
I didn't even stop dyeing it because I wanted to accept it.
01:02:44.719 --> 01:02:46.960
I stopped dying it because my wife really likes it.
01:02:47.119 --> 01:02:50.880
And I was like, I only want to be attracted, I only care about being attractive to one person.
01:02:50.960 --> 01:02:55.840
And if this one person is saying she likes it, she wants the white beard, you can't, I said, let me leave it.
01:02:56.079 --> 01:03:14.400
So, but I I cage all of that to say, is there a pressure on people like yourself, or maybe even just millennials in general, to feel like we can still kind of you know be relevant to them or you know, be their party, or dress a certain way, or look a certain way.
01:03:14.480 --> 01:03:15.119
Like, what is that?
01:03:15.199 --> 01:03:16.480
What is that like for somebody like you?
01:03:16.880 --> 01:03:24.079
I think, like you said earlier, every generation has that, you know, you want to stay cool as long as you can.
01:03:24.320 --> 01:03:36.400
The generation before us, we also, I mean, we might not have done what they are doing to us as harshly, but they always go through that wave of, you know, you're still trying to be cool and then you don't realize that you don't know certain slang anymore.
01:03:36.480 --> 01:03:38.000
Yeah, and you just give it up.
01:03:38.159 --> 01:03:43.599
Um, I don't know that I've ever been under pressure to do anything generally.
01:03:44.000 --> 01:03:54.000
Um, I think anybody who knows me knows that the one trait you can always attribute to me is my self-confidence, which has been misinterpreted as arrogance sometimes.
01:03:54.320 --> 01:03:57.280
Because I do things my way, even with the fashion, for example.
01:03:57.440 --> 01:04:00.559
When I was doing fashion, it wasn't trendy.
01:04:00.719 --> 01:04:02.639
Well, you're busting Akbada at weddings.
01:04:02.800 --> 01:04:11.599
Um, I remember very well there was a pink ball for cancer, breast cancer, which Genevieve Magazine at the time, which was like the coolest magazine, film magazine in Nigeria.
01:04:11.679 --> 01:04:12.880
They don't even know what magazine is.
01:04:15.039 --> 01:04:16.800
Yes, I mean, look at this fashion team.
01:04:17.039 --> 01:04:21.199
So Genevieve magazine used to do this pink ball for cancer every year for cancer awareness.
01:04:21.360 --> 01:04:25.840
And the dress code was pink or a touch of pink, and the men will see where their black suits are going.
01:04:26.079 --> 01:04:29.599
I remember wearing a pink jacket once in 2008 or 9.
01:04:32.079 --> 01:04:34.159
And it was such a thing.
01:04:34.239 --> 01:04:34.559
Yeah.
01:04:34.880 --> 01:04:37.199
Newspapers, I was in Disney style.
01:04:37.360 --> 01:04:39.920
It was like a moment like he wore a pink jacket.
01:04:40.000 --> 01:04:40.079
Yeah.
01:04:40.320 --> 01:04:45.280
I mean, look at Instagram now, just imagine how silly that sounds many years later.
01:04:45.679 --> 01:04:50.480
But I did a lot of these things not because there was pressure, but it was because I wanted to do them.
01:04:50.960 --> 01:04:56.400
Going on TV, I always knew that I wanted to sort of express myself.
01:04:56.480 --> 01:05:00.719
And it's okay to dress a certain way and still do a good job.
01:05:00.960 --> 01:05:07.840
Because the perception then was if you're too dressed up or flashy, you are not great at your job.
01:05:08.159 --> 01:05:10.559
It takes away from the seriousness of what you're doing.
01:05:10.719 --> 01:05:15.519
Yeah, so fashion was sort of looked down on, but it was, I made it, you made it cool.
01:05:15.679 --> 01:05:17.360
Yeah, you can do that and still be great at what you're doing.
01:05:17.840 --> 01:05:19.599
So pressure, I don't think, is ever what it was.
01:05:19.760 --> 01:05:24.639
But I mean, there's no I would be human if I say there are no times when you look and you're like, hmm.
01:05:24.880 --> 01:05:30.079
I think for me, it's more pressure on myself, just realizing what age looks like now.
01:05:30.159 --> 01:05:34.880
Yeah, I think the realization, I still don't believe my age a lot of the time.
01:05:35.760 --> 01:05:37.199
Like, ah, no, no.
01:05:37.519 --> 01:05:38.559
And we're not parents too.
01:05:41.199 --> 01:05:46.000
You know, so I think it's more just the realization of how time has passed for me.
01:05:46.079 --> 01:05:48.639
That I mean, I have some grace, but I still die.
01:05:49.199 --> 01:05:49.599
Yeah, yeah.
01:05:49.840 --> 01:05:52.400
But it's not necessarily because I'm trying to fit in.
01:05:53.119 --> 01:05:54.880
I mean, I don't do Gen Z even.
01:05:55.039 --> 01:05:56.000
I don't know if you see me anywhere.
01:05:56.800 --> 01:06:01.519
Yeah, so it's not that I'm not trying to uh look at me and yeah, but I'm still gonna dress how I want to dress.
01:06:01.760 --> 01:06:03.199
I'd like to dress a certain way, yeah.
01:06:03.280 --> 01:06:04.800
I'll wear things I want to wear.
01:06:05.039 --> 01:06:13.199
So, more than anything, it's just the myself realizing where I am and you know, living in that.
01:06:13.280 --> 01:06:16.320
Okay, yeah, you're 40, you're gonna be 44 this year.
01:06:16.880 --> 01:06:17.679
Jesus.
01:06:21.360 --> 01:06:26.079
Your manager just took his head, Kevin Harty Four.
01:06:29.119 --> 01:06:30.400
No, why do you say it like that?
01:06:30.480 --> 01:06:32.320
I mean, yeah, no.
01:06:32.639 --> 01:06:39.920
Quickly, one last thing from you one slang you want to teach us, and one slang that you want older generations to stop using.
01:06:40.159 --> 01:06:41.760
Um, do you have one?
01:06:41.840 --> 01:06:48.559
Uh when older generation actually says Gen Z, it hurts me so I'm back later of Gen Z.
01:06:49.199 --> 01:06:50.400
Because Gen Z don't say Gen Z.
01:06:51.599 --> 01:06:54.000
It means they're just like yeah, okay.
01:06:56.559 --> 01:07:04.800
It's like it's like Brazier this whole episode.
01:07:04.960 --> 01:07:08.400
We're going to change the topic of this episode understanding young people.
01:07:10.079 --> 01:07:11.360
Young people, fair enough.
01:07:15.199 --> 01:07:17.679
One slang that maybe we may not know.
01:07:17.760 --> 01:07:20.800
Um you want to teach it.
01:07:21.519 --> 01:07:27.039
I don't use a lot of slangs, but I use like um I'm locked in because I'm always locked in and I like locked in locked in.
01:07:27.360 --> 01:07:28.159
Because I'm serious, man.
01:07:28.320 --> 01:07:29.039
I'm locked in, man.
01:07:29.280 --> 01:07:30.719
Like yes, locked in.
01:07:30.880 --> 01:07:33.039
I don't think all the other slangs are too unprofessional.
01:07:33.119 --> 01:07:33.920
Please, I'm a lawyer.
01:07:34.159 --> 01:07:34.239
Okay.
01:07:42.239 --> 01:07:43.440
Thank you very much to me.
01:07:43.840 --> 01:07:49.280
Um, please share with us your comments on this uh video on this conversation.
01:07:49.599 --> 01:07:56.239
Um, I know we sounded like old men on this is more than anything it was for us to understand because we pass judgment a lot.
01:07:56.320 --> 01:08:04.639
Like he's there's a lot of just perception and misconception, misconceptions of the youth, young the young generation.
01:08:05.519 --> 01:08:14.400
Before I say the word again, and uh, we just wanted to understand better so that I mean going forward we can have more wholesome conversations, hopefully.
01:08:14.800 --> 01:08:17.119
And um, thank you very much for educating us.
01:08:17.600 --> 01:08:19.680
We use people that know booking yeah, you know's book.
01:08:19.760 --> 01:08:22.800
Yeah, but let me end that logic and that sham.
01:08:22.880 --> 01:08:24.720
When it's saying the book, look at it.
01:08:24.800 --> 01:08:25.359
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:08:25.600 --> 01:08:27.279
Smart people, thank you very much.
01:08:28.079 --> 01:08:29.279
Thanks for coming on the mentality.
01:08:29.520 --> 01:08:29.840
Cheers, man.
01:08:31.600 --> 01:08:32.319
Thank you.
01:08:33.279 --> 01:08:35.439
Thank you, thank you.
01:08:36.319 --> 01:08:37.119
That was fun.
01:08:37.520 --> 01:08:38.079
Thank you, Chris.
01:08:38.319 --> 01:08:40.319
You guys say it's like same breeze.
01:08:40.399 --> 01:08:43.760
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:08:47.199 --> 01:08:53.760
This season of mentality with Abuka is brought to you by Schweppes and the Clean Libet.
