OM DETTA AVSNITT
Most entrepreneurs have it backwards. They speed up when they should slow down. They add more to-do lists when they should zoom out to see the system. Phyllis Dealy built her career on a counterintuitive truth: slowing down actually speeds up growth. After 25+ years in advertising and marketing evolution—from traditional print and TV through internet, social media, programmatic, and now AI—she's helped Fortune 500 companies and startups transform not by doing more, but by seeing things differently. Phyllis Dealy is founder of Reinvent the World (systems thinking consultancy) and Studio Reinvent (communications and pitch training company), helping brands like PepsiCo, Frida Baby, and United Way transform through systems awareness rather than surface-level strategy.
5 KEY TAKEAWAYS:
1. Dragon Dreaming Framework - Based on Aboriginal cultures documented by anthropologist John Croft. Four parts to any project: dreaming (envision 3 years ahead in past tense), planning (identify 4 key levers that unlock entire dream), doing (90% of project), celebrating (25% of project—built into every phase). Name your levers with energy: "Big Sexy Deals," "Shiny Happy People." Map milestones, track year-over-year progress. This distills overwhelming 300-item to-do lists into four focused levers that automatically pull other tasks through.
2. Operations Manager Is The Hire You're Delaying Too Long - Phyllis wishes she'd hired operations person three years earlier—believes business would be twice the size.
3. Effective Meetings: Fight Distraction, Keep Attention - 70,000 thoughts per day per person. Three people in meeting = 210,000 thoughts competing for attention. 24 hours later they remember 50%.
4. Treating Symptoms vs Root Causes - Nonprofit kept reducing advertising spend because measuring ROI on 12-month basis showed no results. But buying cycle was actually 18 months.
5. Decision Trees Remove Emotion From Crisis - When Phyllis's advertising agency faced series of losses (clients stepped away, lawsuit, $400K unpaid invoice), they built decision tree: "If this client renews, then this.
