In part one of the three-part special series Beyond the Controller: The World Warriors, host Eammonn Dignam explores the narrative lore behind Capcom's legendary fighting game franchise, Street Fighter. We trace the origins from the 1987 arcade original—featuring Ryu, Ken, Master Gouken, and the brutal pneumatic-button arcade cabinet—to Ryu's climactic battle in Thailand, where succumbing to the dark Satsui no Hado left Sagat with his iconic chest scar. Then, we dive into Street Fighter II, uncovering M. Bison's criminal syndicate Shadaloo, his volatile Psycho Power, and the intersecting vengeance quests of Chun-Li and Guile as they converge on the Second World Warrior Tournament ahead of Hollywood's upcoming live-action cinematic reboot.
