Performing Under Pressure: Focus, Confidence, and Mindset with Denise Hatch

WEBVTT
00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:04.799
I'm glad that I get a chance to talk to you, Miss Denise Hatch, about the mind.
00:00:05.120 --> 00:00:13.039
Because I think it's so interesting that the mind is one of the last places that athletes and humans in general typically go to put their attention.
00:00:13.199 --> 00:00:17.199
With what you've learned and all the people that you've worked with, why is that?
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:26.160
You know, Brian, thanks first of all for your interest in the mind and the way you seek uh to be better yourself as an athlete.
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:30.800
And I love the questions that you asked me or will ask.
00:00:30.960 --> 00:00:34.240
Um, the mind is a mystery and it remains a mystery.
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:37.920
And it's one of the few things we really have a great understanding of.
00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:44.399
Although, that being said, neuroscience in the last 10 years has revealed so much about the brain.
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:47.679
But then comes the question: well, what's the mind?
00:00:47.840 --> 00:00:49.679
You know, we have the brain, but what's the mind?
00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:51.679
And this is the question.
00:00:52.079 --> 00:00:59.119
I just had a great conversation with a friend and a colleague who works with the LA Angels.
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:03.679
And um I used to work with her in Stick and Ball and with some of the pro teams.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:13.120
And she was telling me about their new 100,000 square foot facility for workout and their very large psychology department, sports psychology.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:22.560
And she's been in the, she's been around sports and teaching sports for as many years as I have, 35 to some of these pro athletes.
00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:27.840
And the thing that she was saying that the angels know is that it is the game.
00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:33.599
Everybody at a certain level is fit and fast and has the high level of nutrition.
00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:36.400
I mean, they build machines in these facilities.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:39.599
The thing that separates the good from the great is the mindset.
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:41.840
That's the game at a certain level.
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:46.959
But it's something that we haven't readily understood, especially in this country.
00:01:47.439 --> 00:01:59.920
So how then do you take the fact that the mind's not really what and I love what you've said actually about we know the brain, the brain is this physical matter-y thing, but then there's the mind, then there's the thoughts.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:03.599
They right, and that the thoughts are not who we are, all in these kinds of things.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:12.400
So now that you've kind of like laid out it is kind of a little bit ubiquitous, and those that you said the past 10 years in neuroscience has been really a lot of learning going on.
00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:25.360
How do you then explain that to athletes or and or again, athletes are humans, so really the human, that it's like, listen, there is some ubiquitous in this, but there are some things that there's some things that we do know, some things we don't know.
00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:29.439
But here's how to like wrap your head around how to achieve the thing you're looking to try to achieve.
00:02:29.759 --> 00:02:30.400
Right.
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:42.719
You know, if you think about it as the brain being the pathways, and the mind being the neurological tissues in action in those pathways.
00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:58.159
So the mind is our thoughts, it's the way we perceive, interpret, remember, imagine, feel, decide, um, give meaning to the experiences in our lives, all those things that the brain is creating.
00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:02.639
And some people will even say heart, because that's neurological tissue.
00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:08.000
Some people will say every cell in the body because it's also neurological tissue within the cells.
00:03:08.159 --> 00:03:11.759
Like it's it's really interesting, this conversation of the mind.
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:12.800
Where does it start?
00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:13.680
Where does it stop?
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:15.039
What does it encompass?
00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:22.719
But for purposes of just a basic understanding, it really is how we interpret.
00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:36.319
And each one of us interprets ourselves and everything outside of ourselves differently based on our learning experiences, our memories, our imagination, all of it, right?
00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:39.919
So each of us are different in the mind.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:48.879
Yeah, and the way that you just described that too, we I keep hearing more about how the gut and the brain are connected.
00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:50.560
And then you just said the heart, too.
00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:59.280
And it's so interesting again, because we keep thinking about all of these separate pieces and parts of I need to train this, I need to train that.
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:07.680
But what we don't hear enough, I think, and maybe that's exactly what you're saying, which is great, is that we need to make sure we're training the whole human, right?
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:10.800
In this case, for a professional sport, the whole athlete.
00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:16.240
And it's uh I I always I again on the dirt bike side of things, I refer to it as the bike body mind, right?
00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:18.319
Because the tool that we use is the bike.
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:20.639
The way that we control the tool is with the body.
00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:30.879
But again, if we don't go to that other part of the triangle and realize that there is an entire thought process that goes into how the body works, which is the mind, we kind of miss some things.
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:38.240
So what are you learning when we think about that gut-to-brain connection and bringing in the heart and stuff like that?
00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:46.160
Like, is there connective tissue there where if someone has an unhealthy gut that we're noticing that it does affect the brain and maybe vice versa, right?
00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:52.560
Those negative thoughts that people have and how that's uh affecting the output that they can have in a sport or in life.
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:53.279
100%.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:05:01.120
And neuroscience is now telling us that the you can think of your brain as the hardware and the mind as the software.
00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:06.560
And the hardware, if it's not healthy, you're gonna be more negative in your software, the mind.
00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:11.839
And the gut brain access that we're talking about is that get this.
00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:15.759
I only recently learned this, and it really is quite mind-blowing.
00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:20.800
90% of our neurotransmitters for the brain are produced in the gut.
00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:30.079
So your gut has to be healthy to produce the neurotransmitters that run up the vagus nerve to the brain for our ability to have healthy hardware.
00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:31.199
Interesting, right?
00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:32.639
Gut brain access.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:38.319
And there's one more thing that I add to your bike body brain uh is breath.
00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:39.759
Bike body mind.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:40.800
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:41.759
Bike body mind.
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:43.439
I go, I start with the breath first.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:47.519
Breath, brain, body, gut, all of it.
00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:48.079
You're right.
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:58.800
It we are one system, and we're starting to realize that any part of that system that isn't operating correctly is gonna affect the rest of the pieces.
00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:03.920
Why does mental training still carry such a stigma with it?
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:17.759
Like you and I are talking about this because I know it's top of mind to us, and it has been for me for five to six years, as you said, the 35 plus years that you've been training people in different ways throughout the way that power of the mind and Denise Hatch has evolved.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:24.480
But why does it even to this day still like there still feel like there's so much stigma around mental training?
00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:50.000
I think that, you know, if you look back at the way mental the mind has been portrayed, let's say even in cartoons, and I think you and I talked about this before, where you know, it's the snake in uh what's the jungle book that his eyes are going around and around so he can hypnotize his person to eat them.
00:06:50.160 --> 00:07:00.639
Like we've made it in our culture this thing that is something's wrong as opposed to it being the route to make something right.
00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:11.360
Um we tend to think of I I talk to a lot of athletes who think it's just sitting on a couch and talking about all your problems, as is psychology.
00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:13.759
Um, this is not what I do at all.
00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:20.560
And and in the areas that I work in, we work from the perspective of what do you want?
00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:43.279
What's in the way of that, what practices, breathing, visualization, things that can get you aligned in the conscious thinking mind, which you and I've talked about before is 2 to 12% of our mind's ability, and that deep engine room of the subconscious, which is the 88 to 92% of our mind's ability.
00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:55.839
And if that deep engine room, which has been programmed from the time maybe that we've been in the womb, who knows, um, is not aligned with what you want or what you think, you're not gonna get it.
00:07:55.920 --> 00:07:57.920
The engine room is always in charge.
00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:09.120
And it's the engine room that people don't fully understand because the deep unconscious is what's running, it's what's running the ship.
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:13.360
And it's unfamiliar because it's so familiar.
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:22.560
Like we we're not even, we're always running in the background of the mind, this constant mechanism which is talking to us all the time.
00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:28.399
And we're unfamiliar with it because it's always there.
00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:32.639
And so until you gain a little bit of awareness of what is running?
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:34.480
What am I telling myself all the time?
00:08:34.639 --> 00:08:47.200
What's who's talking to me, you know, constantly, and start to get familiar with these unfamiliar things, which are really very familiar, so familiar we don't even see them or recognize them.
00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:49.440
Um, it's all scary stuff.
00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:54.720
You know, it's it's somehow we tend to think of, well, what's it going to expose?
00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:58.879
Or um, you know, what am I gonna have to say?
00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:01.279
And it's it's really none of that.
00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:05.360
It's what what way would we like to direct ourselves?
00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:17.360
What programs would we like to change or habits or thoughts that actually aren't serving our successes or uh the kind of life we want to live?
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:19.200
And how do we change those?
00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:24.159
How do we get into that engine room to change those things that have actually been in our way?
00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:27.200
And it's not as we've been taught to think.
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:28.240
Yeah.
00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:39.840
When you mentioned culture um and the way that culture, societal pressure or societal think, kind of creates what you mentioned about the mind, it immediately made me go to drinking.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:51.279
Um, I I the only reason I ever wanted to drink as a young teenager was because everybody else drank, you know, and and as I've been sober now five years this coming January, and I again I've gone through so many different things.
00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:55.279
But as I look back on that, I'm always like, why did I ever drink?
00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:01.919
You know, it it and it's a there's so many answers to that question, but it's just a good, big, ubiquitous question to play with and it's stuff like that.
00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:03.679
And it's kind of like, I think the same thing.
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:08.399
It's kind of like, why am I afraid to ask questions about this thing?
00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:13.039
And in this case, it could be about the mind, it could be about why someone thinks a certain way, all those kinds of stuff.
00:10:13.200 --> 00:10:16.720
But if somebody has that, they're kind of like, okay, you got me a little bit.
00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:17.840
How do I start?
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:26.159
This could be an athlete, this could be a human, a mom, a dad, someone out there that is just kind of like, all right, I want to, I want to understand my mind a little bit more.
00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:38.559
I want to potentially use it in a way that it could help me achieve something that I've am currently feeling like I'm not capable of doing, even though if we were to look at it, we'd be like, you have all the capability need, like you're the one holding yourself back.
00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:43.279
So where does one kind of start to get into this headspace?
00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:44.480
Great question.
00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:47.440
And good for you to not drink for five years.
00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:50.159
And I was raised by an alcoholic father.
00:10:50.399 --> 00:10:55.200
I had it had my own issues with alcohol early on in life.
00:10:55.360 --> 00:11:00.799
And um, I remember asking my dad, why did you drink all those years?
00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:01.519
What was that about?
00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:02.960
Like, look at how much money you spent.
00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:05.919
And he said, Well, I was raising four girls.
00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:08.240
I was under so much pressure, I was running a business.
00:11:08.320 --> 00:11:09.600
And I thought, oh, interesting.
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:14.720
He thought that he equated that the drinking was going to relieve his pressure.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:19.679
And um, you know, we all have these habitual ways of dealing with pressure.
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:21.840
Mostly they're learned, right?
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:27.679
We've we've learned how to our stress responses and we've learned how to handle pressure.
00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:32.000
But to answer that question that you just asked, it begins with awareness.
00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:48.000
You have to be aware and you have to be willing to be aware of the patterns you're currently running, the thoughts you're currently having, the ways in which you react, not respond, but react to your pressure or your stress in your life.
00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:50.480
And that's what that's where we begin.
00:11:50.559 --> 00:11:59.519
Nothing can begin without the awareness of it and without the courage to actually take a look at that and go, yeah, I want to change this.
00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:00.720
This isn't working for me.
00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:02.000
This is actually in my way.
00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:16.320
If you're enjoying this episode, please consider sharing it with a friend, giving a like, subscribe to the channel, any of the things that we know are gonna help this video and or this episode get out to more potential listeners.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:18.159
Thanks, back to the episode.
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:19.679
I love it.
00:12:19.919 --> 00:12:32.720
I have a uh a document that I'm working on that I just haven't it it hasn't culminated in the way that I feel comfortable yet to like find us finish it out, but it's awareness, acceptance, action, right?
00:12:33.039 --> 00:12:41.279
I heard that on many different podcasts uh years ago and stuff like that, and it's speaks exactly to what you just said, but I just love the succinctness of it.
00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:49.279
But the problem is that I just never felt that I found the right fine-tuned way to say it, accept or awareness.
00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:49.919
What does that mean?
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:50.720
How do I find it?
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:51.440
Acceptance.
00:12:51.519 --> 00:12:52.320
Okay, what does that mean?
00:12:52.399 --> 00:12:53.679
How do I then accept the thing?
00:12:53.840 --> 00:12:54.159
Action.
00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:54.879
What does that mean?
00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:55.519
How do I do it?
00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:56.240
And that's the thing.
00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:08.080
And with social media, when you have 30, 45 seconds to try to, you know, you have to think about the first three seconds to hook somebody into a thing, and then you have to keep them for the next bits and bobs so that they feel like they're getting something, don't want to swipe away.
00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:09.360
And that's been my trouble.
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:16.000
I've been trying to like figure out this way to kind of encapsulate that into that 30, 45 seconds, and I haven't got it yet.
00:13:16.159 --> 00:13:23.519
Um, but you're motivating me, realizing that right, like this is the reminder that it's like, no, no, I need to put that into practice.
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:28.320
I need to come back to that and I need to work on that more and fine-tune it so that I can put that out there.
00:13:28.639 --> 00:13:30.639
But that's for me to share.
00:13:30.799 --> 00:13:35.279
One of the things I noticed that you shared was where does your mind go when the pressure rises?
00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:41.200
So, where does someone's mind normally go when the pressure rises, and where should they go instead?
00:13:41.440 --> 00:13:42.320
It's great.
00:13:42.480 --> 00:13:47.840
You know, everybody goes to a different place and they go to the place that they've been trained to go.
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:49.759
So I say it a little bit differently.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:52.480
I say awareness alignment action.
00:13:52.639 --> 00:13:58.639
So the alignment is getting that deep unconscious working with where you want to go.
00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:11.759
If I don't want to go to drink, or I don't want to go to defeating myself, or I don't want to go to feeling bad, or I don't want to go to a negative thought, well, then how do I go from knowing what that is?
00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:13.600
You got to start with the awareness.
00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:14.399
Where am I?
00:14:14.559 --> 00:14:17.200
Everybody is going to a different place.
00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:20.080
And how do I go in a different way?
00:14:20.240 --> 00:14:22.480
How do I align myself to go in a different way?
00:14:22.559 --> 00:14:32.080
So that means that I got to be willing to look at those unconscious patterns that are driving me, that are really driving the ship.
00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:34.879
And then the action is going to be more spontaneous.
00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:41.440
When I get myself aligned to what I want, so awareness of where I'm at right now, what am I doing?
00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:42.320
What am I running?
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:44.159
Where do I go to under pressure?
00:14:44.320 --> 00:14:46.960
Um, awareness of where do I want to go?
00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:50.080
What do I want to accomplish in this moment under pressure?
00:14:50.159 --> 00:14:52.159
And I'll tell you a quick story in just a moment.
00:14:52.320 --> 00:15:01.919
And then when I get that, when I get that deep unconscious aligned to that which I now intend, I'm going here instead of there, then the action is going to be spontaneous.
00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:03.679
I'm going to get there so much easier.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:11.919
It's because that's the 88 to 92% of my capacity of the mind working for me and with me rather than against me.
00:15:12.159 --> 00:15:20.399
And so I was asking, I heard Ryan Sipes say, we've been, uh Ryan has been working with me in mindset coaching a bit, as has Steve.
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:26.879
And Ryan was saying something the other day to somebody who was talking about pressure and how they just don't do well under pressure.
00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:35.679
And Steve and Ryan both remind me that a lot of racers will practice really well and then under the pressure of racing, just not be able to put it together.
00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:43.600
And Ryan had turned himself around, and we've worked with Ryan for years, and now he's turning around to work with racers mentally.
00:15:43.759 --> 00:15:44.240
I love this.
00:15:44.320 --> 00:15:47.440
And he's great as is Steve because they've got the bike experience.
00:15:47.519 --> 00:15:50.159
And Ryan goes, I love pressure.
00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:53.200
You know, this is what I do under pressure.
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:56.879
And, you know, pressure makes me perform better because I know I can.
00:15:57.039 --> 00:15:58.639
Well, Ryan has worked at that.
00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:01.120
You know, he's put himself to, yeah, pressure.
00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:01.840
I love this.
00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:08.080
So I asked Steve this morning, I said, What do you, what did you do on the line when you knew you had to meet the pressure?
00:16:08.240 --> 00:16:10.080
He's like, I loved pressure.
00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:15.759
Pressure showed me instant feedback to where I was, whether I'm gonna succeed or fail.
00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:19.519
That pressure is gonna show me how I'm gonna perform in that moment.
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:25.759
But it's really about awareness of where you are mentally with pressure.
00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:29.200
And then do I do I need to change that and to what?
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:33.039
And then it's a repetition of that changing.
00:16:33.200 --> 00:16:33.919
I love pressure.
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:34.879
I'm gonna show up.
00:16:35.120 --> 00:16:56.000
Ryan just told the story about, I'm sure he would not mind me telling this, but he was in Europe and went over and raced what GPs in Europe and thought he was gonna, you know, right off the bat, do great, got 18th first first moto, and instead of caving in on himself, as most people would, he turned, he was like, Well let me put this mindset to work.
00:16:56.240 --> 00:16:57.679
I know how to do this.
00:16:57.840 --> 00:17:09.119
I got this, I can do this, you know, just kept talking to himself in the way that assisted him, his mind became his ally, as opposed to that sucked.
00:17:09.279 --> 00:17:12.799
Um, this net how you know, what am I gonna do this next time?
00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:14.559
I don't have what it takes.
00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:19.279
And he just went to nope, got it, and made his way all the way up to second.
00:17:19.440 --> 00:17:22.319
And so that's it's that's the game.
00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:26.880
How are we believing or not believing in ourselves?
00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:35.839
How are we meeting that pressure with the talk that we have that's constantly that mechanism that's running in the back of our minds all the time?
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:46.960
Ricky Russell and I got a chance on the Seat Time podcast that uh I also kind of handle out there for all the dirt bike side of things, which is great because it's where you and I, you know, got a first chance to meet and chit-chat online and everything.
00:17:47.119 --> 00:17:48.640
We talked a lot about the pressure.
00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:56.319
And what I always hear when I do start to dig in is they're thinking about the things outside of their control.
00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:02.720
Or they're allowing someone else's expectations of them to put pressure on them.
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:08.720
And then if somebody says, All right, man, go get that whole shot, and they go, Oh shit, I have to get the whole shot.
00:18:08.880 --> 00:18:18.720
Like then they go, I have to get the whole shot, I have to get the whole shot, I have to get, and they they don't realize then at that moment there's 19 other racers on the line who were trying to get the whole shot.
00:18:18.799 --> 00:18:30.319
So, like that's when it comes back to, okay, so if you feel that pressure of the thing, what is immediately in your control towards the thing you know you need or want towards the bigger goal of the thing?
00:18:30.400 --> 00:18:33.839
And then that way it allows you to then come into that moment and truly focus.
00:18:33.920 --> 00:18:36.559
It's like, okay, again, we're talking about dirt bike racers, right?
00:18:36.640 --> 00:18:44.079
Like, okay, I know where the flag guy's gonna be, I know how his process is when he's gonna wave it, I know what my clutch levers feel like, I know where my knees need to be on the bike.
00:18:44.160 --> 00:18:51.680
And and those are the things that are in your control so that you're completely zoned in on you, the racer, not I need to get the whole shot.
00:18:51.920 --> 00:18:55.119
Because if that's all you're thinking about, you're not gonna get the whole shot.
00:18:55.200 --> 00:18:58.240
You know, it's so interesting to play with this kind of stuff.
00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:01.759
Uh as we kind of dive into the pressure.
00:19:02.240 --> 00:19:03.119
It's fascinating.
00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:07.119
And you just made a comment about the process of the flag man.
00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:09.440
It's the same thing as your process.
00:19:09.599 --> 00:19:11.039
You already know that process.
00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:12.319
This is the work up front.
00:19:12.400 --> 00:19:13.440
This is the awareness.
00:19:13.599 --> 00:19:20.720
What process have you set into place to make sure that every time you line up on that line, you've got that process.
00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:26.079
You're, you know where your mind is gonna go, you know what you got to do, you know every step of the way.
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:29.440
And the first thing that's gotta be done is breath.
00:19:29.599 --> 00:19:37.599
Number one, without fail, you have to be able to breathe because if you're not breathing, then the rest of that process is probably gonna go wonky, right?
00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:39.440
So we gotta breathe.
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:54.559
And then what I like to set up is that, you know, your process is practiced many, many times prior to coming to the event or whatever you're getting ready to step into.
00:19:54.720 --> 00:19:57.279
The process has been practiced in the mind.
00:19:57.440 --> 00:20:06.720
And so every time you run the process through an image or a visor visualization, or you write it down, or you make the plan.
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:08.079
That is your process.
00:20:08.240 --> 00:20:09.279
I'm gonna breathe.
00:20:09.519 --> 00:20:20.640
My mind is gonna go to this, my action is this, I'm uh coming off that line this way, whatever it is that you're doing, you've already set the process and you've set the result.
00:20:20.880 --> 00:20:25.200
You know what you're after, you know how it's gonna go, you run it through your mind.
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:33.359
And by the way, when you run something through your mind visually or as an image, you create the pathway in the brain as if you already did it.
00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:35.359
Your body doesn't know you didn't do it.
00:20:35.519 --> 00:20:36.559
That's the coolest thing.
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:46.640
It's one of the most profound practices is to make the plan and run it through the mind so many times so that by the time you get to it, your brain already has it.
00:20:46.799 --> 00:20:50.160
Your body, the nervous system has already experienced it.
00:20:50.400 --> 00:20:57.200
And I've heard so many athletes lately talk about this, you know, the visualization plus the emotion.
00:20:57.279 --> 00:20:58.960
We'll talk about that in a moment.
00:20:59.200 --> 00:21:03.599
That then when you get to the line, the process is automatic.
00:21:03.759 --> 00:21:05.359
It's been done so many times.
00:21:05.440 --> 00:21:09.200
It's already part of the deep unconscious, 88 to 92 percent.
00:21:09.359 --> 00:21:10.880
We don't have to think about it.
00:21:11.039 --> 00:21:19.759
Because as soon as that thinking mind comes into play on a line or in the moment that we got to perform, that's where the pressure comes from.
00:21:19.839 --> 00:21:24.960
It's that small-mindedness that likes to go, oh, you gotta get that whole shot.
00:21:25.039 --> 00:21:25.599
Who's down there?
00:21:25.759 --> 00:21:27.279
Do they have the same tire as I do?
00:21:27.440 --> 00:21:43.839
Whatever that we do, that the mind likes to do, it's gonna be replaced by the process we've already visualized, imaged, done, practiced a thousand times, so that all we got to do on that line is be absolutely present.
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:51.680
Or on that moment of event where the pressure can set in is just be absolutely present.
00:21:51.759 --> 00:21:53.920
And your breath is the quickest way to that.
00:21:54.160 --> 00:21:59.759
So I would say in that moment, it's just breathing, it's just bringing yourself to your breath because we've already done the work.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:01.759
Now we're just here to have fun.
00:22:02.079 --> 00:22:04.960
So to that point, what does breathing do?
00:22:05.039 --> 00:22:07.519
And why is it the first thing to worry about?
00:22:08.160 --> 00:22:09.039
Great question.
00:22:09.279 --> 00:22:13.599
So the so the mind is doing what your breath is doing.
00:22:13.759 --> 00:22:16.799
The mind actually or the breath actually leads your mind.
00:22:16.960 --> 00:22:20.079
And the mind can focus on nine to twelve things at any given time.
00:22:20.240 --> 00:22:26.000
I think some of these young people with ADD, which train on a bike, is actually faster.
00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:28.160
And so the mind works in waves.
00:22:28.240 --> 00:22:33.519
And we can have tsunamis, big tsunamis that are burying us and putting us under pressure.
00:22:33.759 --> 00:22:40.640
But the breath, as soon as you come to a deep, even, steady breathing, the mind begins to even out.
00:22:40.720 --> 00:22:47.039
So now we might be in surfable waves of mind and we're much more clear and intentional.
00:22:47.440 --> 00:23:02.640
But if you find that the breath is erratic, shallow, uh non-existent, the mind is going to be much more busy and has the ability to really defeat you or just get busy and talk to you more.
00:23:02.799 --> 00:23:04.640
We don't need the mind to come into play there.
00:23:04.720 --> 00:23:10.400
All we need is this nice smooth breath that smooths out the mind to go, oh, this.
00:23:10.720 --> 00:23:12.160
Oh, I remember this.
00:23:12.319 --> 00:23:18.400
And we just place ourselves intentionally because we have the ability to do that because we're clear.
00:23:18.720 --> 00:23:21.839
Are there certain breathing techniques that you believe that work better?
00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.079
And I'm going to give you a little bit of a story as well.
00:23:24.160 --> 00:23:32.559
So recently I have actually have had had withdrawal symptoms from trying to taper off of Lexapro, an antidepressant that I've been on for about five years.
00:23:32.720 --> 00:23:34.000
It got pretty bad.
00:23:34.160 --> 00:23:41.119
And so, but the provider that I've been seeing that has been very helpful, Altro Health, they told me about a concept called windows and waves.
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:45.200
And the reason I'm bringing this up is because as you're describing that, that's exactly what I saw, right?
00:23:45.359 --> 00:23:56.640
Windows being those higher moments where the nervous system is in a good place, the waves, the tsunami and the surfable waves that you mentioned are when shit does not feel as good and the nervous system is just freaking out.
00:23:56.799 --> 00:24:01.039
And one of the things that has been so helpful in that is different breathing techniques.
00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:04.720
And so because of that, I've gone through essentially all of them.
00:24:04.880 --> 00:24:15.200
But that makes me wonder in these situations, is there a certain breathing technique that you think works on average better for most humans or athletes?
00:24:15.279 --> 00:24:21.759
Or is it really that you find what works for the person is the right breathing technique that they should then use?
00:24:22.160 --> 00:24:23.119
Great question.
00:24:23.279 --> 00:24:27.039
And I first of all, let me just give you a bit of science.
00:24:27.200 --> 00:24:31.440
You have two branches of the nervous system: sympathetic, parasympathetic.
00:24:31.599 --> 00:24:36.720
Your sympathetic is what you're using racing, activate, fight, flight, freeze, activate, right?
00:24:36.880 --> 00:24:40.480
The parasympathetic is your rest and digest, it's your calm.
00:24:40.720 --> 00:24:53.519
And so most people come into the line are needing to heal something because when you're trying to come off of uh Lexipro, it is a physiological thing that's happening in the body.
00:24:53.599 --> 00:24:55.440
It's not just mind, it's physiological.
00:24:55.519 --> 00:24:58.559
It's in your nervous system, it's in your cells, it's in your organs.
00:24:58.720 --> 00:25:13.920
So you're having a response to, and so when things are a little bit more amped, when the body has to rest and digest, when the body and the mind need to be calm, deep, even, steady breathing with the sound against the back of the throat.
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:20.319
It's sometimes referred to as ujai breath, the victorious breath, the ocean breath.
00:25:20.480 --> 00:25:23.279
So you listen to the sound of your breath on the way in.
00:25:23.359 --> 00:25:25.440
It's a slight constriction of the throat.
00:25:25.680 --> 00:25:29.359
Breathe in for eight seconds, breathe out for eight seconds.
00:25:29.519 --> 00:25:40.000
It's slow, it's it's much slower than most people breathe, it's much deeper than most people breathe, but the sound of it is actually self-regulating.
00:25:40.160 --> 00:25:46.240
You can self-regulate yourself through breathing, and you engage the parasympathetic nervous system.
00:25:46.400 --> 00:25:49.359
Most of the breath techniques that I give, that would be foundational.
00:25:49.440 --> 00:25:59.839
That would be the one on the line, that would be the one to overcome something in the body at that moment of feeling stress or a physiological response.
00:26:00.079 --> 00:26:01.279
But there are many.
00:26:01.440 --> 00:26:12.720
You know, the thing that I have racers, racers do to see a track better is to engage both hemispheres of the brain because we know that it's what the prodigies have going on.
00:26:12.799 --> 00:26:15.200
That both hemispheres of the brain are activated.
00:26:15.279 --> 00:26:32.640
So alternate nostril breathing, um, box breathing, or what we call retention, is going to uh exchange gases of O2 and CO2 and uh produce EPO, which was what Lance Armstrong got busted for taking, right?
00:26:32.799 --> 00:26:38.240
So you have a natural EPO, which is a performance-enhancing drug that you can create through breath.
00:26:38.319 --> 00:26:42.160
So there's all these breath techniques: foundational, deep even steady.
00:26:42.240 --> 00:26:55.680
Maybe put a little suspension and pause at the top and the bottom, but that deep even steady is gonna bring the mind more even so that you can be more intentional with everything that you're doing, or you can be more calm.
00:26:55.920 --> 00:27:04.400
There are also, I there are also a couple breath techniques that I know of that will do the opposite, activate the nervous system.
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:17.440
So if you're on the line ready to fall asleep, or you're you gotta go out and give a talk and you're ready to fall asleep, you're you're just not sharp in your brain, uh, breath of fire, diaphragmatic.
00:27:17.599 --> 00:27:21.519
It's gonna engage the nervous system and get bring you up for the game, get you ready.
00:27:21.680 --> 00:27:23.279
So that's all part of knowing yourself.
00:27:23.359 --> 00:27:23.920
Where am I at?
00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:24.960
What am I dealing with?
00:27:25.119 --> 00:27:30.640
This is part of the awareness that we're talking about, just understanding ourselves where we're at in any given moment.
00:27:30.720 --> 00:27:31.759
What is my mind doing?
00:27:31.920 --> 00:27:33.680
What do I need in this moment?
00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:42.000
There's another piece that I got from you as I was reading around on all your different fun stuff, because I love following everything that you guys put out, and it's has to do with flow state.
00:27:42.160 --> 00:27:44.240
So we've hear about this all the time.
00:27:44.319 --> 00:27:49.759
We've heard people mention it, and there's now an institute that is trying to like figure flow state out.
00:27:49.920 --> 00:27:51.039
But what is flow?
00:27:51.119 --> 00:27:54.160
And and simply kind of like, is it just about being in the zone?
00:27:54.319 --> 00:27:55.599
Is it about having a great day?
00:27:55.759 --> 00:28:00.960
And how can people potentially find a way to start making their way there more often?
00:28:01.279 --> 00:28:02.079
Flow, right?
00:28:02.240 --> 00:28:02.799
So, yeah.
00:28:02.880 --> 00:28:11.359
So the um, you know, flow is something that science dates back to flow or zone uh in the eight from the 1870s.
00:28:11.440 --> 00:28:13.039
It's been studied for a long time.
00:28:13.200 --> 00:28:18.960
And in the 80s, there was a research center opened in the University of Chicago where it's actually been researched.
00:28:19.200 --> 00:28:22.000
And um I'm gonna give you this name.
00:28:22.160 --> 00:28:33.279
Stephen Cotler is one of the, he was the ex-director of the flow research collective, um, leading expert on human performance, and they tried to crack the code of flow, right?
00:28:33.519 --> 00:28:36.240
But let me ex let me define it as he defines it.
00:28:36.960 --> 00:28:37.839
His book is awesome.
00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:41.519
He's got a couple books uh yeah, was it Creating Superman or something like that?
00:28:41.759 --> 00:28:42.640
What's the Superman book?
00:28:43.119 --> 00:28:45.359
I don't remember, but yes, you've mentioned that before.
00:28:45.680 --> 00:28:48.559
So then you mentioned his name, like that book is amazing.
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:49.759
He's got other ones as well.
00:28:49.920 --> 00:28:54.640
And uh that's the collective I was thinking about because weren't they all like climbers or something like that back in the day?
00:28:54.720 --> 00:28:56.640
And they were like getting okay, cool.
00:28:56.720 --> 00:28:56.960
All right.
00:28:57.119 --> 00:28:59.839
If anybody else wants to go find more, go fu go look that up for sure.
00:29:00.240 --> 00:29:00.799
Okay, continue.
00:29:00.880 --> 00:29:00.960
Sorry.
00:29:01.839 --> 00:29:04.000
Which I haven't read that yet and need to.
00:29:04.240 --> 00:29:10.319
Um he, you know, the the the state of flow happens to all of us all the time.
00:29:10.480 --> 00:29:18.720
Think about, you know, when something becomes automatic, we're just driving a certain uh drive that you have to make every day.
00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:20.799
Oftentimes you think, how did I even get here?
00:29:20.880 --> 00:29:22.000
I wasn't even paying attention.
00:29:22.079 --> 00:29:24.400
It's just like you've gotten into that flow.
00:29:24.559 --> 00:29:25.839
You just it's automatic.
00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:29.680
But he defines it as flows defined as the optimal state of consciousness.
00:29:29.839 --> 00:29:34.480
When we feel our best and perform our best, it refers to moments of wrapped attention.
00:29:34.640 --> 00:29:38.319
I love that, and total absorption into what we're doing.
00:29:38.559 --> 00:29:40.400
Action and awareness merge.
00:29:40.720 --> 00:29:46.880
Action and awareness merge, experience, and often people experience time distortion.
00:29:47.359 --> 00:29:53.440
And so what they did in this um flow collective, I thought was really cool.
00:29:53.599 --> 00:30:05.680
They came up with all the all the ways in which to uh get into the state of flow, and they decided there was 27 intrinsic triggers into the state of flow, you know, coming from within.
00:30:05.839 --> 00:30:06.720
What gets us there?
00:30:06.880 --> 00:30:08.799
They boiled them down to five.
00:30:09.039 --> 00:30:17.359
And the number one way into flow, intrinsic trigger, is the state of curiosity, being curious.
00:30:17.680 --> 00:30:27.920
And by the way, what they also know is mental and physical attention, motivation, and productivity spive spike by 500% in that state.
00:30:28.160 --> 00:30:30.160
And so, why curiosity?
00:30:30.319 --> 00:30:32.480
That that really stopped me for a moment.
00:30:32.559 --> 00:30:34.880
I had to pay a lot of attention to that.
00:30:34.960 --> 00:30:37.759
Why, why is curiosity a trigger?
00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:49.359
But when you think of it and you break it down, what it's doing is it's getting you out of your thinking state, it's removing that small 8 to 12 percent thinking capacity.
00:30:49.519 --> 00:30:53.279
And we're just open to wonder, you know, what if?
00:30:53.440 --> 00:30:59.200
What what um how can I see things differently in the state of curiosity?
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:10.720
Um, you you know, if you're if you think of it as being on the line in the state of curiosity, it's like, what can I, what can I perform today?
00:31:10.880 --> 00:31:12.240
How good can I be at this?
00:31:12.400 --> 00:31:20.319
And I would say probably being in the more positive state of curiosity as negative or even in a negative state, to just be curious about that.
00:31:20.559 --> 00:31:23.759
What causes this moment that I'm feeling?
00:31:23.920 --> 00:31:43.279
How is it that I'm or just being open to what is in that moment and what's going to happen is that instead of these, these blinders that we often put on ourselves, I like to call them the limiters, you know, because it's our trained way into limitation.
00:31:43.440 --> 00:31:52.160
We limit ourselves through our thinking mind and oftentimes our habitual practices and thoughts and habits.
00:31:52.480 --> 00:31:56.640
And we just we just open ourselves up and we just get curious about ourselves.
00:31:56.799 --> 00:31:58.880
Why do I think about this this way?
00:31:59.119 --> 00:31:59.839
What if?
00:32:00.079 --> 00:32:02.480
Um, how good am I willing to let it get?
00:32:02.720 --> 00:32:08.640
So, curiosity is the number one way into that state, surprisingly so.
00:32:09.119 --> 00:32:18.880
When we're trying to figure out what we might be curious on, there's kind of this chance to overthink and then kind of like dive into too many options.
00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:28.240
So, where is that line between being curious and then making sure that you don't go so far the other direction that you begin overthinking on the what you're trying to reach for?
00:32:28.720 --> 00:32:30.079
It's a great question.
00:32:30.160 --> 00:32:36.240
And I I had to pause on that as you asked me that, because that's exactly what we do.
00:32:36.400 --> 00:32:43.200
We go right into that quick thinking, and especially someone who's trained their brain to go fast.
00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:47.920
Speed sports actually train ADD or ADHD, right?
00:32:48.079 --> 00:32:53.599
It's trained because your brain process has to go fast to process everything that you see at speed.
00:32:53.759 --> 00:32:54.640
That's just part of it.
00:32:54.799 --> 00:32:59.119
But it's also a a genius level thinker, which is gonna think a lot.
00:32:59.279 --> 00:33:02.000
You know, that that fast brain process is gonna think a lot.
00:33:02.079 --> 00:33:06.640
And so I think that you know, that comes back to awareness.
00:33:06.880 --> 00:33:19.519
And I and I think that um I think that that takes a lot of awareness of, you know, where I'm going to let me back up and say breath is first, like stay with the breath.
00:33:19.839 --> 00:33:28.880
And being open in that space is to just be aware, take in um these moments around me.
00:33:29.039 --> 00:33:30.160
How am I feeling?
00:33:30.319 --> 00:33:32.799
Um, how good am I willing to let it get?
00:33:32.960 --> 00:33:52.960
And then as it, as that starts to go into the more habitual thinking, and I this is a this is something that I think is really difficult, is to decipher where we're just open and curious, and where all of a sudden we're in that process, that loop of thinking that we do all the time.
00:33:53.200 --> 00:33:57.440
And by the way, we live in our own box of thinking.
00:33:57.519 --> 00:34:05.519
We, you know, and if you start to be aware of that, you realize like nine, well, this isn't, this is not something I'm making up.
00:34:05.599 --> 00:34:06.559
This is science.
00:34:06.880 --> 00:34:10.000
80% of our thoughts are negative for most people.
00:34:10.239 --> 00:34:12.800
95% are repetitive.
00:34:12.960 --> 00:34:17.920
So we're living in this 95% box of repetition of thought.
00:34:18.159 --> 00:34:21.280
And that's what we have to start having an awareness of.
00:34:21.440 --> 00:34:22.639
Am I in that box?
00:34:22.719 --> 00:34:25.679
And where's, you know, where does my box stop?
00:34:25.920 --> 00:34:32.400
How can I get to what I want to accomplish, which is outside of my box of thinking and behavior?
00:34:32.639 --> 00:34:36.320
Because you're not going to get it if you don't expand your box of thinking.
00:34:36.480 --> 00:34:42.719
And so it begins by changing the negative, what I call what uh Dr.
00:34:42.880 --> 00:34:47.280
Eamon, neuroscientist, calls ants, your automatic negative thoughts.
00:34:47.440 --> 00:34:56.559
You got to squash those that are running in that deep unconscious mind, step on those, squash those, and then change them to, all right, not that, but this.
00:34:56.719 --> 00:35:01.679
Like, no, I'm not gonna think this way anymore, but I have to have something to replace it with.
00:35:01.840 --> 00:35:06.800
So squashing the ants and then replacing those ants with, yeah, I'm just gonna stay open.
00:35:06.880 --> 00:35:08.159
I'm just gonna come to my breath.
00:35:08.400 --> 00:35:12.159
I'm actually gonna believe that I can't, as opposed to I can't.
00:35:12.400 --> 00:35:15.679
My process is going to include this, this, and this.
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:26.000
And so we can pare it down and expand it rather than staying within our box of thinking, which is limited for all of us.
00:35:26.079 --> 00:35:27.119
We're all limited, right?
00:35:27.280 --> 00:35:34.800
Unless, you know, somehow you've, I don't know, figured out how to get out of that box through many different ways.
00:35:35.039 --> 00:35:36.000
Breathing one.
00:35:36.480 --> 00:35:43.679
Um I'm not even gonna go into some of the practices until a little bit later, uh, because I want to stay with this for a minute.
00:35:43.760 --> 00:35:48.880
I want to, I want to just visit the thought thought triangle because this is important for people to understand.
00:35:49.119 --> 00:35:59.280
When you have a thought, as is 95% repetitive, so I'm repeating that thought again and again and again and again, which becomes habit and then it's automatic.
00:35:59.440 --> 00:36:04.960
It's either an ant, it's negative, or it's a positive, it's gonna get me where I want to go.
00:36:05.440 --> 00:36:11.599
That thought immediately produces a biochemical reaction in your body.
00:36:11.760 --> 00:36:17.840
So if it's a stress thought, it could be um a cortisol.
00:36:17.920 --> 00:36:26.719
So now I'm gonna have an emotion based on that biochemical reaction, which could be stress or anxiety or anger, whatever it might be.
00:36:27.039 --> 00:36:35.920
Conversely, if I start that thought with something like, yeah, this is this is gonna be an amazing race today, amazing, great day today.
00:36:36.079 --> 00:36:39.440
It's gonna be an amazing process for me, what I'm about to do.
00:36:39.599 --> 00:36:50.639
That might produce a dopamine or a serotonin or something that's elevated in the biochemical response, which is then gonna produce an emotion, which is excitement.
00:36:50.800 --> 00:36:52.559
I'm really excited to be here.
00:36:52.719 --> 00:36:58.079
And then that emotion, whatever that is, negative or positive, is gonna be driving your next thought.
00:36:58.159 --> 00:37:00.400
Now you're caught in this triangle.
00:37:00.639 --> 00:37:06.400
Thought, biochemical reaction, emotion, thought, biochemical care reaction, emotion.
00:37:06.559 --> 00:37:09.039
That's where we stay with thoughts.
00:37:09.280 --> 00:37:12.480
So that has to be back to awareness.
00:37:12.719 --> 00:37:14.320
What is that original thought?
00:37:14.480 --> 00:37:15.360
Is it an ant?
00:37:15.679 --> 00:37:16.639
Is it negative?
00:37:16.880 --> 00:37:25.039
Or is it, am I placing myself in my thought process where where I want to be, where I want to go, where what I want to accomplish?
00:37:26.079 --> 00:37:37.599
Am I just curious about, you know, maybe I don't even have the structures in place to decide what it is that I want to accomplish or where I want to go.
00:37:37.760 --> 00:37:40.400
And in that moment, curiosity is great.
00:37:40.639 --> 00:37:42.880
Like, what am I capable of?
00:37:43.039 --> 00:37:46.960
What am I willing to allow myself to be?
00:37:47.199 --> 00:37:55.760
Um, maybe pausing and just breathing for a moment and opening, where we tend to not take time to do that.
00:37:55.920 --> 00:38:05.039
We tend to just be in that constant repetition of thought a lot, but just to take those moments to breathe and be curious and to be in wonder.
00:38:05.280 --> 00:38:05.920
What is this?
00:38:06.079 --> 00:38:07.199
How does this really work?
00:38:07.360 --> 00:38:07.840
Right.
00:38:08.079 --> 00:38:09.119
Which I know you do.
00:38:09.280 --> 00:38:11.119
I know your brain works like that.
00:38:11.760 --> 00:38:13.840
Look, I'm really good at the overthinking part.
00:38:13.920 --> 00:38:15.119
Let's be completely honest.
00:38:15.519 --> 00:38:20.880
But I don't think but what I've realized about that is I've accepted it.
00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:34.800
And I've started to learn to enjoy the fact that I just wander, and my brain is gonna go into this place and it's gonna go into this space, and there's gonna be times where I can allow it or not allow it, I can let it.
00:38:34.960 --> 00:38:40.800
And there are times where I say, you know what, I love that you went there, but I really need to focus on this other thing right now.
00:38:40.960 --> 00:38:42.400
And it tries to bring me back.
00:38:42.559 --> 00:38:53.280
And I had to get really good at that when I started tapering on Lexapro, I started in May, and I am not off of it yet, and we are already in October when I started losing a lot of concentration.
00:38:53.360 --> 00:39:02.320
I'd be trying to read a book, and because the nervous system is adapting and changing so much, because of the lack of the drug in the system, like there was no focus.
00:39:02.400 --> 00:39:09.920
There was zero ability to read one page without just jumping all over the place and thinking about my entire day.
00:39:10.000 --> 00:39:16.079
And so that's where journaling really came in for me, is where I had to kind of like, okay, like that thought's a real thought.
00:39:16.320 --> 00:39:23.360
You want to go do that thing, you want to have this, you want to think about that social media post of uh awareness, acceptance, accountability, like whatever.
00:39:23.760 --> 00:39:27.280
And but the problem was is that I still wanted to read that page in front of me.
00:39:27.679 --> 00:39:34.559
And so I had to like find a way to come into that, and that's where I've kind of like gone, okay, like this isn't a bad thing that I'm having all these thoughts.
00:39:34.719 --> 00:39:36.239
It's just not helpful in the moment.
00:39:36.400 --> 00:39:40.239
And so I need to kind of like do what you're I've a little bit of what you're talking about, right?
00:39:40.320 --> 00:39:46.480
I I wouldn't say that I got curious about it, but I I think it's because I've already to the point where the awareness is there for me.
00:39:46.800 --> 00:39:48.239
I'm like, okay, this is a thing.
00:39:48.400 --> 00:39:50.000
I get it, I know that you're here.
00:39:50.159 --> 00:39:52.159
Thanks, buddy, but not right now.
00:39:52.320 --> 00:40:01.679
And I kind of either try to push it down, which is sounds negative in the way, but it's just kind of like, okay, thanks, I'm gonna put you for later, or I write it down and then I try to come back to it.
00:40:01.840 --> 00:40:03.280
Um great.
00:40:03.519 --> 00:40:05.519
And I'd say that there's no perfect answer.
00:40:05.760 --> 00:40:08.320
Like sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.
00:40:08.559 --> 00:40:15.599
But I think that's the more the more we practice it, the more that it becomes second nature, and then it becomes first nature, and it just becomes the thing.
00:40:15.760 --> 00:40:23.760
But within that, where do you find like what's the tactile piece and part about curiosity for somebody?
00:40:23.920 --> 00:40:40.880
Say we were talking about one of these racers on the bike, we were talking about somebody that's in a meeting, somebody that's in a stressful moment, that it's like, what is maybe what's the curious question to kind of like think about and ask themselves so they can kind of go, okay, like I'm curious, what should I be asking myself from a curious perspective?
00:40:41.920 --> 00:40:43.840
Yeah, um great.
00:40:44.000 --> 00:40:51.920
And I I want to close that circle that you were just talking about, or expand on that practice is the key.
00:40:52.239 --> 00:40:58.320
And so everything that we practice over and over and over and over is going to be part of that deep engine room.
00:40:58.400 --> 00:41:03.199
That's our automatic thoughts and our automatic habits and our automatic behaviors.
00:41:03.360 --> 00:41:07.840
And so, whatever we're practicing mostly is there, lies there.
00:41:08.239 --> 00:41:10.320
And so, what are you practicing?
00:41:10.480 --> 00:41:16.719
And in the moment where you're having a difficult time to focus, what's the practice in that moment?
00:41:16.880 --> 00:41:21.280
So let's just talk about that for a moment first, because I think this is really important.
00:41:21.920 --> 00:41:29.840
It takes practice to focus, it really does because our minds are so busy and we live in an intention, attention-seeking society.
00:41:30.000 --> 00:41:32.239
Everything wants our attention, everything.
00:41:32.480 --> 00:41:34.320
And so, where are we giving it?
00:41:34.480 --> 00:41:38.000
And where are we giving it to our ourselves and our own self-talk?
00:41:38.159 --> 00:41:40.719
And then, secondly, where are we giving it out here?
00:41:40.960 --> 00:41:45.039
Because we get to decide that, and we're not going to decide that unless we're aware of it.
00:41:45.199 --> 00:41:47.119
Where am I giving my attention right now?
00:41:47.280 --> 00:41:50.320
What am I doing and saying over and over and over and over?
00:41:50.400 --> 00:41:58.159
And so, one of the practices that I think is really important is a mindful or a mindset practice of first breathing.
00:41:58.320 --> 00:42:02.880
So the breath is going to take away the busyness of the mind and make the mind more even.
00:42:02.960 --> 00:42:14.079
So just the deep, even, steady breath, maybe with a pause at the top and the bottom, or picking another breath technique that uh that engages the parasympathetic nervous system.
00:42:14.320 --> 00:42:18.239
Behind that, then is the ability to focus on something.
00:42:18.400 --> 00:42:26.239
So let's say, for example, I have one word or one thought that I'm just gonna keep bringing myself back to.
00:42:26.320 --> 00:42:28.480
And every time I go away, I'm gonna come back.
00:42:29.360 --> 00:42:31.199
A recitation, basically.
00:42:31.360 --> 00:42:38.320
Um, you know, I have a certain thing that I say that I just bring myself back to, but I'm a meditator and I do it in the practice of meditation.
00:42:38.559 --> 00:42:47.360
I would recommend everybody take five minutes, 10, maybe 15 work up to sitting, breathing, and then picking that one thing.
00:42:47.599 --> 00:42:58.320
Um something as simple as bringing a flame into the forehead, like a flame of a candle, and just holding that vision.
00:42:58.480 --> 00:43:09.679
Maybe it's a visual because you're a visualizer as opposed to a feeler, whatever it might be, uh a visual of something, and then keep your focus on that thing until it goes off.
00:43:09.760 --> 00:43:15.519
And I can guarantee you, when you first start this practice, it's gonna be two seconds, maybe one, and you're off to the races.
00:43:15.679 --> 00:43:17.360
And then you go, oh, there I go again.
00:43:17.440 --> 00:43:20.480
Let me come back and replace myself, and then you're off.
00:43:20.719 --> 00:43:22.639
And let me replace myself again.
00:43:22.719 --> 00:43:26.000
And now I, hey, I got five seconds, and then you're off.
00:43:26.079 --> 00:43:29.519
And then let me replace myself again and focus on this thing.
00:43:29.840 --> 00:43:34.400
That is it is a practice to hold ourselves into the place of focus.
00:43:34.639 --> 00:43:36.800
Now, on to like curiosity.
00:43:36.880 --> 00:43:38.880
That's a great place to be curious.
00:43:39.039 --> 00:43:49.039
How long can I hold myself on this thought before I'm off, or on this visual before I'm off, or in just in my another thing to do is just feel my breath.
00:43:49.199 --> 00:43:57.440
Let me feel my breath against the back of the back of the nose, the nostrils, and see what it's doing in the expansive nature of breathing in and breathing out.
00:43:57.599 --> 00:43:59.760
Odd, we don't do that, but if I can.
00:44:00.320 --> 00:44:05.440
Hold myself there for a period of five minutes, well, then that's gonna translate into everything that I do.
00:44:05.519 --> 00:44:09.679
I'm gonna be able to hold myself much more focused for longer periods of time.
00:44:09.760 --> 00:44:12.400
And it translates on the track and in our life.
00:44:12.719 --> 00:44:14.079
Curious is that.
00:44:14.480 --> 00:44:19.280
Be curious about how long I can hold myself in this place of focus.
00:44:19.360 --> 00:44:21.039
So let's take it to a line.
00:44:21.199 --> 00:44:25.679
You know, I'm gonna give myself, I give people three things on a line.
00:44:25.840 --> 00:44:27.039
Just focus on these three things.
00:44:27.199 --> 00:44:32.880
Breathe, and then just repeat these three things on the exhalation, whatever they might be.
00:44:33.039 --> 00:44:34.079
And then you're off.
00:44:34.320 --> 00:44:38.079
Can you come back and breathe again and run through those three things again?
00:44:38.159 --> 00:44:40.159
And so you do it until you get it.
00:44:40.400 --> 00:44:44.400
Or can I just stay with my breathing until I'm off?
00:44:44.559 --> 00:44:46.079
And can I bring myself back?
00:44:46.159 --> 00:44:50.239
So curious as to how long can I just stay right here in this moment?
00:44:50.719 --> 00:44:55.119
Curious as to how much fun am I willing to have?
00:44:55.360 --> 00:44:57.280
How much fun am I willing to have today?
00:44:57.760 --> 00:45:00.320
You know, what do I really want to accomplish?
00:45:00.559 --> 00:45:03.199
Um, what is possible for me?
00:45:03.280 --> 00:45:21.039
Like if I just bring myself fully into this uh wrapped attention on this track and just bring my awareness to this track, every curve, every bump, every straightaway again and again, and catch myself when it goes off and bring it back.
00:45:21.360 --> 00:45:23.039
How good could I be?
00:45:23.199 --> 00:45:25.840
What would my outcome be if I can do that?
00:45:26.000 --> 00:45:30.079
So just, you know, we can get curious in so many ways to so many things, right?
00:45:30.320 --> 00:45:33.039
This morning I worked out before we did this.
00:45:33.440 --> 00:45:34.639
I like to work out in the mornings.
00:45:34.719 --> 00:45:37.280
I take two, three days, have a rest day, all those kinds of things.
00:45:37.360 --> 00:45:41.199
And after three to six months of whatever those exercises are, I can see a difference.
00:45:41.360 --> 00:45:42.320
I can feel a difference.
00:45:42.480 --> 00:45:47.840
I can go up in weight and do the same reps, or I can add reps that maybe I didn't have before at a certain weight.
00:45:48.159 --> 00:45:50.880
Tangible change, that evolution is very tangible.
00:45:50.960 --> 00:45:53.440
It's very easy to see and it's easy to feel.
00:45:53.679 --> 00:45:59.360
But with all the things that we've been talking about, it again to that word, it can feel ubiquitous.
00:45:59.599 --> 00:46:18.159
So are are there things that you've noticed that people have said to you that they've been like, oh when the switch flips, that they've been like, I get it now, I feel it, I see the thing, where mental training has really like been working and that they know that they can see those results and the change that is happening.
00:46:18.320 --> 00:46:19.039
What does that look like?
00:46:19.199 --> 00:46:20.000
Like, how does that feel?
00:46:20.079 --> 00:46:20.800
What have you heard?
00:46:21.440 --> 00:46:23.679
Isn't that the best question?
00:46:23.840 --> 00:46:24.159
Yes.
00:46:24.320 --> 00:46:26.800
And it just depends on what somebody's working on.
00:46:26.880 --> 00:46:29.760
I mean, a result is the greatest thing, right?
00:46:29.920 --> 00:46:31.280
Getting the result that you want.
00:46:31.440 --> 00:46:35.199
But a lot often, and I and I don't like to name names.
00:46:35.360 --> 00:46:42.639
I've worked in NFL and MLB and pro golf and pro soccer, and now I love the speed sports.
00:46:42.880 --> 00:46:47.039
Um so I'm not, I don't like to mention names because I think it's a private thing.
00:46:47.119 --> 00:46:53.440
But I've had a lot of people say, I get so nervous, I I vomit, can't eat, I vomit.
00:46:53.679 --> 00:47:02.400
So, you know, just that being able to change the the sympathetic nervous system to a parasympathetic.
00:47:02.480 --> 00:47:03.360
So I'm calm.
00:47:03.440 --> 00:47:08.000
I can eat a full meal, I can get on the line and be completely ready.
00:47:08.159 --> 00:47:15.360
You know, and ready, I like to think of nerves as let's turn that in from I'm nervous to I'm ready.
00:47:15.440 --> 00:47:21.039
You're always going to have that little bit of ready in the belly, but can I be ready and not puke?
00:47:21.199 --> 00:47:27.840
You know, can I be ready and be steady and set myself at the same time?
00:47:28.159 --> 00:47:36.559
Um it one of the things that we always said and still say to this day is that you turn your thinking into knowing.
00:47:36.880 --> 00:47:54.880
That's the it can be very elusive, but you go to this place eventually where you're automatically coming to that event, that line, that thing, and you know what you're about to do as opposed to questioning.
00:47:55.039 --> 00:47:56.559
I have no idea how this is gonna go.
00:47:56.639 --> 00:48:02.239
I'm really nervous about this, and the mind is doing what it's doing to, yeah, I got this.
00:48:02.400 --> 00:48:05.119
I I'm totally, I know my process.
00:48:05.280 --> 00:48:14.159
I'm ready to perform my process, I know what my result is intended to be, and then the result is going to show you something different.
00:48:14.400 --> 00:48:26.000
The way you feel, let's say, on a track racing is going to be that your mind is much more on that track in that flow, as opposed to what am I going to have for dinner tonight?
00:48:26.159 --> 00:48:27.760
Who's behind me, who's ahead of me?
00:48:27.840 --> 00:48:29.599
Oh, I gotta, I gotta win.
00:48:29.760 --> 00:48:34.960
You start to realize your mind is coming into that coherence.
00:48:35.119 --> 00:48:44.960
Your mind, body, breath, bike, gut, you know, all the things, they're cohered as opposed to just running all these different operations.
00:48:45.840 --> 00:48:55.199
One thing that came up as I was putting these notes together and I left out, but I'm gonna go there a little bit because as a mindset coach, you work with people on confidence.
00:48:55.360 --> 00:49:08.239
And I believe that in the sport of supercross, motocross, and and where some of your athletes lie, and where I've spent a lot of my time, not as a professional athlete, but as a as a writer and a fan, is Jorge Prado.
00:49:09.199 --> 00:49:12.320
So, for a little bit of context, he came over to the United States.
00:49:12.400 --> 00:49:18.159
He was a two-time MX GP champion, which is international uh Grand Prix for Motocross.
00:49:18.239 --> 00:49:21.760
He came to the United States, got on a new team, got a new bike, and had a lot of problems.
00:49:21.840 --> 00:49:29.440
But as he was coming across to everybody, what I see now looking back is that he was protecting his confidence.
00:49:30.239 --> 00:49:49.920
He had built up his ability to know who he is and how she he should be performing and what that feels like to such a degree when the team that he was with and the bike that he was on, he couldn't uh it was feeling like it was starting to edge against and chip away at that confidence that he had built.
00:49:50.159 --> 00:49:55.199
And so to make sure that he didn't lose that, what he started doing was protecting his confidence.
00:49:55.519 --> 00:50:03.440
A lot of people took that as blaming the team and blaming the bike, but now that we're coming out the other side of this, we're seeing that he was always correct.
00:50:04.400 --> 00:50:18.400
But what I think is so interesting about that is he didn't need to be correct, he didn't need to be wrong because what he was doing within that was protecting his ability to know that he can still perform at the exact same level he could two years earlier when he was at the MXGP.
00:50:18.480 --> 00:50:22.480
And we've seen that now in the way that he just won that Super Motocross championship.
00:50:22.719 --> 00:50:32.800
So, within that, was there anything if you heard Steve or yourself listen and talk about Jorge Prado that you kind of like latched in on the way that he was protecting his confidence?
00:50:32.880 --> 00:50:33.920
And if not, that's okay.
00:50:34.079 --> 00:50:39.679
But from that mindset coach perspective, what is it about confidence that we need to protect?
00:50:39.760 --> 00:50:44.480
And how do we get to a point that we go, this is it, this is what I need to protect?
00:50:44.960 --> 00:50:46.480
That's that's fantastic.
00:50:46.639 --> 00:50:49.440
And I haven't spent a lot of time looking in on him.
00:50:49.519 --> 00:50:51.360
I've spent a lot of time looking in on other people.
00:50:51.519 --> 00:50:55.280
Roxon said something that I thought very interesting, and I'll share it at the end of this.
00:50:55.519 --> 00:51:02.159
But the thing that I heard Max say that his female trainer on the bike told him is to know yourself.
00:51:02.320 --> 00:51:04.000
It is the most important thing.
00:51:04.239 --> 00:51:08.480
And you know, this is mindset work, is to know yourself.
00:51:08.559 --> 00:51:13.440
And that's not just the small S self, that little small mind that likes to run away with you.
00:51:13.519 --> 00:51:14.960
It's the capital S self.
00:51:15.199 --> 00:51:16.079
Who am I?
00:51:16.320 --> 00:51:19.360
Who you mentioned and how, right?
00:51:19.519 --> 00:51:22.639
And so I think Europeans are ahead of the game in this.
00:51:22.800 --> 00:51:26.960
Europeans, I learned a lot of what I'm doing from European study.
00:51:27.199 --> 00:51:35.360
Europeans were much more open to mindset, learning the process of themselves, who they are, how they perform.
00:51:35.760 --> 00:51:38.960
Um, knowing yourself is the number one thing.
00:51:39.199 --> 00:51:39.920
Who am I?
00:51:40.079 --> 00:51:41.360
What am I about to do?
00:51:41.519 --> 00:51:42.400
What do I want?
00:51:42.559 --> 00:51:44.079
What do I think I can accomplish?
00:51:44.239 --> 00:51:53.519
It's got to be outside of that box to get, you're not gonna go from where you're at to a champion without making a process and expanding that box of belief about yourself.
00:51:53.760 --> 00:51:58.639
And so I didn't see the way in which he protected himself.
00:51:58.800 --> 00:52:08.400
But I think that there's a certain amount of, yeah, I know who I am, and I'm not going to let this pressure uh diminish that part of me.
00:52:08.719 --> 00:52:13.920
But I did watch Roxon and I'm watching many other athletes start to say this.
00:52:14.000 --> 00:52:16.880
And this is this is the keys to the kingdom right here.
00:52:17.119 --> 00:52:19.920
Is and this is science, this is neuroscience.
00:52:20.480 --> 00:52:25.679
And neuroscience is starting to play with this quantum field that we haven't really understood.
00:52:25.760 --> 00:52:30.559
And quantum, by the way, is inverse of time-space, it's space-time.
00:52:30.800 --> 00:52:32.000
So things change.
00:52:32.159 --> 00:52:37.280
It's like manifestation doesn't happen from past, present, future, it happens now.
00:52:37.599 --> 00:52:42.480
What I place myself into in these certain states happens now.
00:52:42.800 --> 00:52:45.360
And so it's fascinating to me.
00:52:45.440 --> 00:52:53.360
And I've been doing a lot of study on this, but here's what here's how I'm seeing certain athletes across the board in many different sports say it.
00:52:53.519 --> 00:53:03.199
When Roxon got on the stage finishing his championship, he said, I spent so much time visualizing this.
00:53:03.360 --> 00:53:08.960
And he said, My wife had to take the kids because there was so much emotion that came with it.
00:53:09.119 --> 00:53:12.960
Two things clear intention about what you're going to do.
00:53:13.199 --> 00:53:16.880
Clear intention, coupled with that elevated emotion.
00:53:17.039 --> 00:53:17.760
I feel good.
00:53:17.840 --> 00:53:31.280
How do you, how do you elevate and get into that state of feeling good listening to music, knowing that I'm about to represent my country, knowing who I am and what I'm about to do, elevated to coupled with that clear intention, creates an outcome.
00:53:31.360 --> 00:53:43.360
And he said, uh Roxanne said, you know, it doesn't always work, but I have worked with so many athletes in this way that more often than not, this works.
00:53:43.519 --> 00:53:44.480
We are set.
00:53:44.719 --> 00:53:45.280
We know.
00:53:45.519 --> 00:53:48.880
We feel good about what we're about to do and we know what we're gonna do.
00:53:49.039 --> 00:54:04.719
I've uh listen, I'm listening to that Antonelli in Formula One, 18 years old, come into the Formula One space, had a tough year to begin with, then went in and won six, won six races already this year, maybe seven now, I don't know.
00:54:04.880 --> 00:54:07.199
Um, but like same thing.
00:54:07.280 --> 00:54:08.159
He says the same thing.
00:54:08.239 --> 00:54:10.320
I visualize that outcome so many times.
00:54:10.400 --> 00:54:11.679
I feel so good about it.
00:54:11.840 --> 00:54:12.480
Who's there?
00:54:12.639 --> 00:54:14.559
Who's how am I celebrating?
00:54:14.639 --> 00:54:22.320
There are certain ways in which people are putting themselves in this visualization that is accomplishing outcomes.
00:54:22.559 --> 00:54:27.119
My young people who I've been with for a period of time are doing remarkable things.
00:54:27.280 --> 00:54:33.440
They're getting contracts that are unbelievable at young ages because they're going in and going, yeah, I know who I am.
00:54:33.599 --> 00:54:35.039
I've been doing this work.
00:54:35.280 --> 00:54:39.280
I know exactly who I am, I know exactly what I'm gonna do when I'm under this pressure.
00:54:39.360 --> 00:54:41.599
And here's the result I intend.
00:54:41.760 --> 00:54:42.400
Will I get it?
00:54:42.480 --> 00:54:42.800
Maybe.
00:54:42.880 --> 00:54:44.960
I hope I that's what I've put in for.
00:54:45.199 --> 00:54:47.039
If I don't, I've learned.
00:54:47.199 --> 00:54:52.639
Not that I'm gonna beat myself up, but that I've learned and I'm gonna take away from that and get better.
00:54:52.800 --> 00:54:54.639
And that's another big thing.
00:54:54.800 --> 00:55:00.400
The the process after, when we don't get the result, we don't meet ourselves with where we want to be.
00:55:00.559 --> 00:55:02.159
It's a it's a learning process.
00:55:02.239 --> 00:55:05.280
It's you you get here's how I visit that.
00:55:05.440 --> 00:55:08.480
You get 30 minutes to visit your results.
00:55:08.719 --> 00:55:10.320
And I just had to go through this myself.
00:55:10.480 --> 00:55:16.880
I caught myself beating myself up over a talk I gave, and it I didn't feel like I had the outcome I wanted.
00:55:16.960 --> 00:55:18.639
And I was like, Denise, you teach this stuff.
00:55:18.719 --> 00:55:19.360
What are you doing?
00:55:19.519 --> 00:55:20.800
So here it is.
00:55:21.679 --> 00:55:25.760
You get 30 minutes to ask yourself the question, what could have been better?
00:55:25.840 --> 00:55:26.800
Not what went wrong.
00:55:26.960 --> 00:55:27.840
I'm gonna learn here.
00:55:28.079 --> 00:55:28.800
Nothing went wrong.
00:55:28.960 --> 00:55:31.599
I have an ability to learn.
00:55:31.840 --> 00:55:34.000
Um, what went well?
00:55:34.159 --> 00:55:35.360
The brain loves that.
00:55:35.519 --> 00:55:36.159
What went well?
00:55:36.239 --> 00:55:37.280
What did I do good?
00:55:37.440 --> 00:55:39.920
And then knowing that, what am I gonna implement going forward?
00:55:40.079 --> 00:55:41.039
Okay, now I'm done with that.
00:55:41.119 --> 00:55:42.960
I've processed this for about 30 minutes.
00:55:43.119 --> 00:55:43.599
I know.
00:55:43.760 --> 00:55:48.320
Now I'm gonna set myself over here with what I know I got to implement, and I'm gonna go to work on that.
00:55:48.400 --> 00:55:50.800
And you asked a question which I thought was really great.
00:55:50.960 --> 00:55:53.920
What are the elites doing in these facilities?
00:55:54.079 --> 00:56:00.400
Because I've been in the training rooms with the NFL, the MLB, the Club MX, which is a grand facility.
00:56:00.559 --> 00:56:05.360
And I'm watching these people in routine, they have routines, first and foremost.
00:56:05.440 --> 00:56:13.199
They had, they are, they're coming down to a science: what to eat, how to rehab, um regeneration, training, all of it.
00:56:13.280 --> 00:56:23.679
It's becoming a science, even in the moto fields now, and off-road is starting to become this science of um how we train and how we regenerate.
00:56:23.840 --> 00:56:29.519
And one of the things that I hear these young people say when I ask them, how did the race go this weekend?
00:56:29.679 --> 00:56:33.199
That I've been met a couple of times with, I learned.
00:56:33.360 --> 00:56:36.559
You know, it wasn't that it sucked, it didn't go well, I lost.
00:56:36.719 --> 00:56:39.360
It's that immediately I learned.
00:56:39.519 --> 00:56:43.280
And I I love that because if we're learning, we're growing.
00:56:43.519 --> 00:56:49.679
And, you know, and failure is one of the quickest ways to learning and getting better, right?
00:56:50.000 --> 00:56:57.679
And and getting to the top and getting to know ourselves and getting anywhere that we want to go is not going to happen without failure.
00:56:57.840 --> 00:57:05.599
And so if we can get familiar with that and we can learn through that process and we can adopt the process of, all right, learned that.
00:57:05.760 --> 00:57:07.119
Let me place myself here now.
00:57:07.280 --> 00:57:07.760
Next step.
00:57:07.840 --> 00:57:09.360
Let me expand my box.
00:57:09.599 --> 00:57:10.480
Next step.
00:57:10.800 --> 00:57:19.519
It's so interesting how when people are outside looking in on someone doing exactly what you're saying, they're just like, they can't see it, right?
00:57:19.599 --> 00:57:24.639
They they see that tip of the iceberg, but they don't see everything that's underneath in the glacier, right?
00:57:24.719 --> 00:57:25.119
If you will.
00:57:25.280 --> 00:57:30.239
Because and and I have a strangely poignant moment in my life where this happened to me.
00:57:30.320 --> 00:57:31.360
It was 2025.
00:57:31.519 --> 00:57:34.000
I finally got a chance to follow the National Enduro series.
00:57:34.079 --> 00:57:38.400
I'm in the 45 expert class with the old men who are really fast.
00:57:38.559 --> 00:57:39.920
Please, dear God.
00:57:40.320 --> 00:57:43.599
First race, I was seventh over, I was seventh in the class.
00:57:43.679 --> 00:57:49.440
I I rode horrible, but by the end of the day, I started getting fourth or fifth, averaged out to seventh in the class, right?
00:57:49.519 --> 00:57:50.079
First race.
00:57:50.239 --> 00:57:53.039
By the end of the year, I got second in the class, right?
00:57:53.119 --> 00:57:56.880
So I was finishing top uh second and third throughout the end.
00:57:57.119 --> 00:58:01.119
And by the summer, it was so interesting.
00:58:01.360 --> 00:58:04.880
After every event, I'd get five, ten messages.
00:58:05.119 --> 00:58:06.000
What are you doing?
00:58:06.239 --> 00:58:07.840
How are you getting so much faster?
00:58:08.000 --> 00:58:09.119
Dot dot dot dot dot.
00:58:09.519 --> 00:58:13.760
I would tell them exactly, I would share my programming with these people.
00:58:13.840 --> 00:58:14.880
I you know, like everything.
00:58:14.960 --> 00:58:22.320
Like I was like, this it every I made a video from every race on the Seat Time channel, and it talked about everything I did.
00:58:22.480 --> 00:58:29.920
It talked about how the race, where I found my failures from the race before, because when I made these videos, I watched every single test section.
00:58:30.159 --> 00:58:32.639
And when I was like, why are you going so slow there?
00:58:32.880 --> 00:58:36.480
You can go like you, you can go faster there.
00:58:36.559 --> 00:58:38.800
So go faster in those types of sections.
00:58:38.960 --> 00:58:52.880
So it's just every time I just mentally and physically got stronger because when I got done with a race and my biceps hurt, I was like, huh, I need to do more pull-ups, more chin-ups, so I can work the shoulders and the arms, and I need to do more curls.
00:58:53.039 --> 00:58:54.559
Got that weakness fixed.
00:58:54.880 --> 00:58:58.400
And when people were asking me, like, well, how did you get so much faster?
00:58:58.559 --> 00:59:07.519
It's like I came home and I analyzed the race and I thought, what went well, what didn't, what can I change between now and the next race?
00:59:07.679 --> 00:59:08.719
That was my programming.
00:59:08.800 --> 00:59:09.440
Like that was it.
00:59:09.519 --> 00:59:11.360
Like I was still working a full-time job.
00:59:11.440 --> 00:59:14.880
I could only ride once on every weekend if I was lucky.
00:59:15.039 --> 00:59:18.639
That may be four times I could get on the bike between, you know, in a month.
00:59:18.719 --> 00:59:21.199
And if there was another race, that's less, right?
00:59:21.280 --> 00:59:30.880
So it was so much more about what I could do off the bike than it was about what I could do on the bike to then be able to get on the bike and have that ability to understand.
00:59:30.960 --> 00:59:32.320
It's like I just did all the work.
00:59:32.400 --> 00:59:32.639
Yes.
00:59:32.800 --> 00:59:39.599
Now I get a chance to prove it to myself that I I am continuously building that confidence and I'm showing those kinds of things.
00:59:39.920 --> 00:59:44.639
But why is it that we keep holding ourselves back?
00:59:44.800 --> 00:59:49.119
Because that's what I see in those messages is people thinking that I'm special.
00:59:49.360 --> 00:59:52.880
When I'm not special, they're just as capable as I am.
00:59:53.039 --> 00:59:55.039
So why do we hold ourselves back?
00:59:55.360 --> 00:59:57.360
You were doing the right work, Brian.
00:59:57.519 --> 00:59:59.119
You've done a ton of study.
00:59:59.440 --> 01:00:06.480
Your knowledge is very high level when it comes to this off-the-work bike, and you were doing, you were learning in the right way.
01:00:06.639 --> 01:00:14.800
The response that most people have, let's just relate that to racers, when they don't get the result they want, what they do is they go out and train harder.
01:00:14.960 --> 01:00:20.400
They may have already been overtrained by the time they got there, but they're gonna go train harder because that's what they know to do.
01:00:20.559 --> 01:00:31.280
That's the habit, that's what got them there in the first place, so they think, because they're not aware of the thinking that also coupled with or grew or developed as they were training on the bike.
01:00:31.440 --> 01:00:33.519
Let me go out and just work out even harder.
01:00:33.599 --> 01:00:35.599
I'm gonna, I'm gonna ride more, I'm gonna do more.
01:00:35.679 --> 01:00:43.519
I'm gonna, it's that doing, I'm gonna do more, as opposed to doing what you did was to learn the proper way.
01:00:43.679 --> 01:00:46.400
You came off the bike and well, let me go, let me go to work here.
01:00:46.480 --> 01:00:52.320
What, what went, what wasn't working, what worked well, let me implement it.
01:00:52.480 --> 01:00:56.400
And then you go back to the next race and you're a completely different person.
01:00:56.559 --> 01:00:58.639
You know, we see this in the facilities all the time.
01:00:58.719 --> 01:01:06.639
And I know a lot of racers will go back and break down the race and watch it and see where I could have gained that extra few seconds.
01:01:06.800 --> 01:01:19.119
I was just at the Tennessee knockout um last month, and uh, you know, the Europeans were there, and uh Tristan Hart had this, you know, lines that were incredible that other people didn't.
01:01:19.280 --> 01:01:22.320
And I saw Ryder LeBlanc on the way out.
01:01:22.480 --> 01:01:36.159
I think, you know, Ryder always gets a good result, but he got beat by Tristan in that particular motto and some of the Europeans, and he was headed right back out to that track to look at where where are they getting the time?
01:01:36.480 --> 01:01:46.239
You know, it's doing the work, putting in the work to know mentally, physically, on the bike, and that's what you did.
01:01:46.400 --> 01:01:48.079
You went to work in the right way.
01:01:48.719 --> 01:01:49.199
Love it.
01:01:49.360 --> 01:01:51.840
Well, thank you for validating my craziness, right?
01:01:51.920 --> 01:02:00.320
That's what you know, it's one of those things that in the moment you overthink it and you're like, ugh, and then, but then you see it and you're like, oh my God, look at this thing.
01:02:00.480 --> 01:02:04.559
Like, just like I have a friend who just started running and they're trying to run two times a week.
01:02:04.639 --> 01:02:10.559
And it's like, yeah, if you were to compare how fast I run to how fast she runs, she's slower than I am.
01:02:10.719 --> 01:02:17.599
But if you compare to where she's at this month compared to where she was at last month, she's faster, she's better.
01:02:17.679 --> 01:02:28.400
She, you know, it and it's so easy to look to look in the mirror, but when we look in the mirror, we see somebody else, and we immediately compare the fact that we're not where they are.
01:02:28.480 --> 01:02:34.480
But then if we just go, wait a minute, I'm further along this thing we call life than I was last weekend.
01:02:34.719 --> 01:02:36.480
I'm actually doing pretty damn good.
01:02:36.719 --> 01:02:38.079
Well, what didn't I ask?
01:02:38.239 --> 01:02:39.679
We're coming to the end of our time.
01:02:39.840 --> 01:02:44.000
You have blown my wig back multiple times, and I'm gonna be overthinking this episode so much.
01:02:44.079 --> 01:02:46.480
I hope others are too, and that they've taken away some things.
01:02:46.639 --> 01:02:51.360
But what was something maybe I didn't ask, something that's been on your mind, anything out there as we close this thing out?
01:02:51.679 --> 01:02:54.000
Yeah, so comparison's a silent killer.
01:02:54.079 --> 01:02:54.719
Don't compare.
01:02:54.880 --> 01:02:59.840
You know, it's we're so tempted to compare and really it's we can know where we want to go.
01:03:00.079 --> 01:03:07.920
We can um observe and set as a standard when we watch somebody and be inspired by, but don't compare.
01:03:08.159 --> 01:03:10.880
But lastly, the brain can change.
01:03:11.039 --> 01:03:15.440
What we now know is that neuroplasticity lasts until the day we die.
01:03:15.679 --> 01:03:18.239
My dad used to say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
01:03:18.480 --> 01:03:20.000
We now know you can.
01:03:20.159 --> 01:03:27.599
And so when you begin to place yourself where you want to be mentally, you're creating new neurological pathways.
01:03:27.679 --> 01:03:34.159
You're creating a new pathway in the brain, just like riding a rut in the mud and it gets deeper and deeper and deeper.
01:03:34.400 --> 01:03:37.280
What are you thinking to yourself over and over and over?
01:03:37.360 --> 01:03:39.280
What are you doing over and over and over?
01:03:39.440 --> 01:03:41.119
Is it going to get you where you want to go?
01:03:41.280 --> 01:03:46.800
And if it hasn't to this point, well, then maybe you want to make a change and make a different pathway in the brain first.
01:03:46.960 --> 01:03:49.199
Let me think about this differently.
01:03:50.079 --> 01:03:50.960
Love it.
01:03:51.119 --> 01:03:53.599
Miss Denise Hatch, where can people find you?
01:03:53.760 --> 01:03:55.519
Where is any of your information?
01:03:55.679 --> 01:03:58.960
Obviously, I know, but I want you to share all the places that people can find those things.
01:03:59.199 --> 01:04:03.840
Yeah, so the best way is powerofthemind.coach.com coach.
01:04:04.079 --> 01:04:06.079
Um, I have a lot of different programs.
01:04:06.239 --> 01:04:09.679
I do have a Vimeo channel, and on that Vimeo channel, it's Power of the Mind.
01:04:09.760 --> 01:04:14.159
I should probably send it to you because I never really know how to get it to somebody other than through the links.
01:04:14.400 --> 01:04:16.239
PowerofTimind.coach Vimeo.
01:04:16.559 --> 01:04:33.119
It has free videos to breathing and um some guided, guided meditations and yoga practices and many things in which we do the practices to become better and train off and on.
01:04:34.320 --> 01:04:34.639
Love it.
01:04:34.880 --> 01:04:35.199
Tracker body.
01:04:35.519 --> 01:04:36.639
Thank you very much for your time.
01:04:36.800 --> 01:04:40.000
I really appreciate it, and I look forward to you uh continuing to help more.
01:04:40.239 --> 01:04:41.440
Thanks, Brian, and just myself.
01:04:41.840 --> 01:04:43.360
I I I love your questions.
01:04:43.519 --> 01:04:44.000
Thank you.
01:04:44.320 --> 01:04:48.960
Huge thank you to Denise Hatch from Power of the Mind for coming on Deepish Conversations.
01:04:49.119 --> 01:04:50.320
I want to know what you think.
01:04:50.480 --> 01:04:55.920
Please hit the comments with any questions, comments, or concerns that you have or that you took away from the episode.
01:04:56.079 --> 01:05:02.239
After that, make sure you give it a like, a subscribe, whatever the kids are doing these days, and what least, if nothing else, we'll see you for the next one.
01:05:02.400 --> 01:05:02.960
Have a good one.
01:05:03.199 --> 01:05:03.920
Peace.
