OM DETTA AVSNITT
Michael Jackson wanted sweet potato pie. Mrs. Wilma Jean Allums boarded a flight to Tokyo with 15 pounds of Louisiana sweet potatoes.
In this 2020 conversation, she tells me how a family connection took her from Minden, Louisiana, to cooking for the King of Pop. On the menu: ten sweet potato pies, fried chicken, and French fries.
Her story stretches well beyond Michael Jackson. We talk about her years performing R&B, decades of factory work, and how his head of security, Bill Bray, encouraged her to open Sweet Mother’s Soul Food.
You know the music. Come hear the story behind the meal. Meet Sweet Mother Wilma Jean Allums.
