2 Chronicles 22 explained. King Ahaziah follows the wicked ways of Ahab’s family, while Athaliah attempts to destroy David’s royal line.
Ahaziah becomes king of Judah but follows the evil counsel of his mother, Athaliah, and the house of Ahab. He joins King Joram of Israel in battle against Aram, but his alliance ultimately leads to his death during Jehu’s judgment against Ahab’s family.
After Ahaziah dies, Athaliah seizes power and attempts to kill the royal descendants of Judah. However, Jehoshabeath secretly rescues the infant Joash, hiding him in the Temple for six years.
2 Chronicles 22 highlights the destructive influence of wicked leadership, the consequences of ungodly alliances, and God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises.
Despite Athaliah’s attempt to eliminate David’s descendants, God preserves the royal line through Joash. This miraculous preservation ultimately points toward Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David, whose everlasting kingdom fulfils God’s covenant promises.
