00:01:00Why CFP Criteria Feels Random
00:08:41Jayden Daniels vs Joe Burrow Claim
00:18:16Ryan Clark On The SEC Shift
00:22:30Indiana Hype And Schedule Reality
OM DETTA AVSNITT
The CFP committee keeps telling us “schedule matters,” but the selections rarely prove it, and that gap is exactly where fan trust goes to die. I open with a blunt problem: a nine-win team without a conference title hasn’t been clearly shown a path, even when the résumé looks tougher than teams with more wins. So I build a straightforward, repeatable way to rank teams that doesn’t rely on mystery logic or changing goalposts.
I walk through four data points that should drive the College Football Playoff conversation: strength of record, strength of schedule, wins against top 25 teams, and overall record. Then I zoom in on the one most people misunderstand, strength of record, and explain it in plain language: how impressive is your record based on who you had to beat to get it? A blind comparison thats shows how this metric can challenge the usual “more wins equals better team” assumption. I also argue for incentives that create better football like rewarding true road matchups, not punishing close losses to quality teams, and rethinking automatic bids that can water down a 12-team playoff.
From there, the show pivots to LSU and a debate that lit up social media: Jayden Daniels versus Joe Burrow and what it really means to “do more for the program”. I close by responding to claims that the SEC has lost its edge in the NIL and transfer portal era.

00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:01.679
Teams will follow.
00:00:01.840 --> 00:00:17.679
And it's understandable, Dusty, to have those conversations and that question because the committee has not shown us that a nine-win, non-conference champion will make it to the playoffs because ultimately they're still gonna they're still looking at the amount of wins in the win column at the end of the year.
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:18.559
And that's a shame.
00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:23.120
And they say they're gonna talk about the stretch of schedule, but they have not shown us that yet.
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:30.800
Welcome to the third down conversation here, plays for sports and entertainment.
00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:34.320
I am the turnip seed.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.520
Let's talk about it.
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:47.280
Welcome to the third down conversation, my good people, where sports meets real opinions and honest conversations.
00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:51.439
This isn't just about what happened on the field or on the court.
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:54.560
It's about why it happened and what it all means.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:57.439
This is the third down conversation.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:00:59.119
Let's talk about it.
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:05.120
The soundbite you just heard was Roman Harper of the SEC Network.
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:08.319
On first listen, it can't appear that Mr.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:11.040
Harper is minimizing winning.
00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:21.359
However, if you allow his words to marinate just a little bit, what he's actually expressing is that teams should be rewarded for playing a difficult schedule.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:30.640
The college football playoff committee since its creation has never had any consistent criteria on how they select teams.
00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:35.120
It puts you in mind of the NBA MVP voting.
00:01:35.359 --> 00:01:38.319
The criteria just changes from year to year.
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:46.560
Florida State goes undefeated, wins their conference championship, and somehow gets left out of the college football playoffs.
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:51.599
Last season, two group of five teams make the playoffs.
00:01:52.319 --> 00:02:00.079
James Madison and Tulane over the likes of a 9-3 Texas and a 10-2 Notre Dame.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:02.400
How is that even possible?
00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:07.439
So I figured maybe I can help out the playoff committee.
00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:10.400
I've come up with a formula.
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.120
Four simple data points to judge teams by.
00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:28.400
The data that I would look at when it comes to selecting teams would be strength of record, strength of schedule, wins against top 25 teams, and teams overall record.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:36.879
Strength of schedule wins against top 25 teams, and a team's overall record, those are pretty self-explanatory.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:40.960
Strength of schedule is simply who did you play?
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:44.960
Wins against top 25 teams, how many did you beat?
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:47.039
That were ranked in the top 25.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:52.159
And then a team's overall record is what did you accomplish?
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:54.240
So those are pretty straightforward.
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:58.240
Therefore, the one I really want to focus on is strength of record.
00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:01.680
Because it can be a tad bit confusing.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:11.599
But it asks one simple question How impressive is this team's record based on who they had to be to get it?
00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:16.719
For example, let's do a blind reveal.
00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:18.479
I'm not going to tell you who the teams are.
00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:22.159
I'm just going to explain what they accomplished last season.
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:25.520
Team A went 9-3.
00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:35.759
Of those nine wins, they beat two teams that won 10 games, and they beat one team that won 11 games.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:48.560
Team B went 10-2 with wins over a team that won 10 games, 9 games, and two wins over teams that won eight games.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:54.000
Team A also beat team B head-to-head.
00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:00.400
Of those two teams, who has the strongest record?
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:05.199
If you said Team A, you'd be correct.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:11.520
Team A will be Texas, while Team B is Oklahoma.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:14.240
Texas missed the playoffs.
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:16.319
Oklahoma made the playoffs.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:22.000
If you look at both teams' schedule, they both played a quality out of conference opponent.
00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:29.360
Texas played Ohio State at Ohio State while Oklahoma played Michigan at home.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:31.120
Texas lost by seven.
00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:32.560
Oklahoma won.
00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:41.040
Texas does have a bad loss against Florida, but they beat Oklahoma head to head.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:45.759
Oklahoma has a really good win at Alabama.
00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:51.600
However, Texas beat Texas AM, who won 11 games.
00:04:52.480 --> 00:05:09.519
So if you really just look at both teams' schedule and then see what they accomplish, even though Oklahoma is 10-2, Texas 9-3 record is a bit stronger than Oklahoma's 10-2 record.
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:17.680
For this reason, I think strength of record should be the number one data point that the playoff committee uses.
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:27.920
I do understand that strength of record can be a bit of a fluid metric because it's attached to teams' week in and week out performance.
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:29.759
But what does that create?
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:30.959
Drama.
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:33.279
And what do fans love?
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:35.120
Drama.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:49.279
The next thing I would add as far as the terminal teams that make the playoffs, I would give them bonus credit for playing a powerful team on the road or at a neutral site.
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:53.199
I think that helps incentivize quality matchups.
00:05:53.439 --> 00:06:00.639
I think that increases our opportunity of seeing teams actually schedule these matchups and not cancel them.
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:05.439
Like Indiana and Notre Dame just canceled their series recently.
00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:13.360
The next thing I would do is that I would not penalize teams for losing against quality teams.
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:16.800
As long as you lose a close game.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:23.439
For instance, Texas played Ohio State at Ohio State and lost by seven.
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:26.639
I wouldn't penalize Texas for that.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:34.399
And the reason why I would not penalize these teams is because I want to incentivize teams to schedule quality opponents.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:38.000
The fans are here for the competition.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:41.920
Nobody wants to see cupcakes week in and week out.
00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:52.800
The last thing that I would do is I would eliminate auto bids for the highest five-ranked conference champions.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:59.920
This will be removed because that's how we got two group of five teams in a 12-team playoff last season.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:04.319
Auto bids are simply for the Power Four.
00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:07.680
And that's because competition has to matter.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:09.279
It just has to.
00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:14.959
So, all in all, playoff committee, here's how this formula stacks up.
00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:27.360
When you're comparing teams and you look at their schedules, their strength of record should be 50% of their of their grade or score, however you want to call it.
00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:31.120
Strength of schedule is 25%.
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:37.279
Wins against top 25 teams and a team's overall record, 12%.
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:49.040
And the reason why the wins against top 25 teams is so low for me is because look, preseason rankings, they are guests.
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.199
Educated guests, but a guest.
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:56.639
So I don't put a lot of a lot of stock into preseason rankings.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:59.199
For me, they don't really mean anything.
00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:00.720
I think they are fun.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:02.000
I think we should keep them.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:08.399
It creates conversation, but they're pointless in the grand scheme of things.
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:17.680
Using this formula, though, will create transparency for fans because now we know what the criteria is.
00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:26.079
And like I've said, and I will continue to say this, it incentivizes teams to play quality opponents.
00:08:26.480 --> 00:08:28.879
And that is what we're here for.
00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:33.440
We want to see those big matchups, we want to see those exciting matchups.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:36.879
So playoff committee, I've laid it out for you.
00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:40.000
Make it happen, and you can thank me later.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:46.399
Jaden Daniels transferred to LSU because he wanted to change the university.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:50.720
Joe Burrow transferred to LSU because he had nowhere else to go.
00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:58.399
When Jaden Daniels transferred to LSU, he had already been a starting quarterback at Arizona State University for three years.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:05.200
He didn't have to go anywhere, but he chose to go to a bad LSU team that was six and seven the year prior.
00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:10.639
And he turned them to a nine and three team and then a nine and four team and won the Heisman there.
00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:15.840
Joe Burrow transferred to LSU because he couldn't play at Ohio State.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.679
It wasn't his first option.
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:22.720
Joe Burrow transferred to an already stacked LSU team that was nine and four without them.
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:26.559
And then the next season he improved them to 10 and 3.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:28.879
Joe Burrow's final year, he won the Heisman.
00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:36.559
He was 15-0, but LSU as a program fell off when he left because they were five and five the following season.
00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:40.000
Jaden Daniels transformed LSU as a program.
00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:43.519
Joe Burrow came to LSU as a backup plan.
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:48.879
Okay, so I'm not sure who was speaking on this soundbite.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.960
So um I can't give credit.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:54.000
I wish I could, but I'm not sure who the guy is.
00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:58.320
I just want to address what are you saying?
00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:10.639
I found this clip on Twitter and the caption reads Jaden Daniels did more for LSU as a program than Joe Burrow.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:18.080
Now the part that I want you to remember about that caption is as a program.
00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:26.080
Now before I dive into this completely, I want to give a bit of a backstory to what's happening here.
00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:39.279
Noticed to LSU that they could no longer use his name, image, and likeness anymore.
00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:52.240
And it's all due to LSU now coach Lane Kiffin allowing a defensive back, I think he's a cornerback, to wear Jaden Daniels' jersey, which is number five.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:56.240
For the record, that number is not retired.
00:10:57.039 --> 00:11:13.679
Jaden Daniels' representation stated that himself, meaning Jaden, and his family is deeply hurt and feel disrespected because LSU has allowed someone to wear his number.
00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:16.960
I'm assuming he didn't give his blessing.
00:11:17.759 --> 00:11:25.120
Now, if you have forgotten, Jaden won the Heisman Trophy at LSU.
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:28.480
So all of this is surrounding that.
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:34.159
That then turned to why is he so upset?
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:40.000
It's not like he won or brought a championship to LSU.
00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:44.480
That is where Joe Burrow comes in.
00:11:45.279 --> 00:11:49.360
Because people are saying, well, no one has number nine.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:52.559
They're not doing Joe Burrow like this.
00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:57.759
And the rebuttal is well, Burrow won a championship.
00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:09.120
So now that prompts this guy to say that Jaden has done more for LSU as a program than Joe Burrow.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:14.879
And I think he's completely wrong.
00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:17.360
Completely wrong.
00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:22.799
LSU has always been LSU.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:25.840
Like I'm in I'm in my mid-30s, right?
00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:31.679
And since my since I came to really love college football, LSU has been really good.
00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:32.639
Like all the time.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:35.679
They've always been one of those top teams in the country.
00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:44.480
So LSU was never uh some university or program that needed saving.
00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:46.799
Did they have bad seasons?
00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:47.519
Sure.
00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.440
Most programs do have bad seasons from time to time.
00:12:52.639 --> 00:12:56.159
But let's not treat them like they're Vanderbilt.
00:12:56.480 --> 00:13:02.879
Let's not treat them like they're Rutgers or Northwestern.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:05.279
No disrespect to those schools, by the way.
00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:13.919
But LSU has a very, very historic and prideful history.
00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:17.440
It's a prestigious university and program.
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:24.399
So don't make it seem like Jaden was some savior for LSU.
00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:27.919
That's so far from the actual truth.
00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:31.919
We're talking about a program that was great with Nick Saban.
00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:37.200
We're talking about a program that was great with Les Miles.
00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:43.919
We're talking about a program that won a national championship with Ed Oron.
00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:46.559
Can't even make out half stuff he's saying.
00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:47.840
They won a championship.
00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.840
And those three coaches that I just mentioned all got a national championship at LSU.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:00.799
So easy on the Jaden came and saved LSU.
00:14:01.679 --> 00:14:04.960
Now let's compare Jaden and Burrow.
00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:07.919
And I can hear it.
00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:11.360
It hasn't been said yet out loud, but I can hear it.
00:14:11.519 --> 00:14:15.120
This is not a race thing, so don't make it a race thing.
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:19.279
We're simply talking about what they accomplished.
00:14:19.519 --> 00:14:20.559
That's it.
00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:21.840
For the program.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:22.720
That's it.
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:24.960
So keep it about that.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:35.279
So if you look at just what happened on the field, Joe Burrough clearly did more for the program.
00:14:36.720 --> 00:14:39.759
Winning a Heisman doesn't do much for your program.
00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:44.080
It does a lot for said individual.
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:49.440
But that doesn't help the program per se.
00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:52.240
Winning a championship.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:56.799
Oh yeah, that changes a lot of things for your program.
00:14:57.759 --> 00:14:59.600
And Burrow did that.
00:15:00.159 --> 00:15:05.039
You want to say, well, the team was stacked when Burrow joined?
00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:06.879
That's fair.
00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:11.360
They had uh Jordan Jefferson, Jamar Chase.
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:14.639
Both of those guys are tanning up in the NFL.
00:15:14.960 --> 00:15:18.720
They're probably 1A and 1B as far as the best receivers in the league.
00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:19.919
That's fair.
00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:23.360
But they wouldn't win it without Joe.
00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:26.399
So you got to put some respect on that.
00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:33.039
You say that, well, Jaden Daniels was a starter at Arizona State, and he came there as like he alright.
00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:36.960
I'm choosing to be at LSU because I'm this, that, and then third.
00:15:37.039 --> 00:15:38.960
Bro, is Arizona State?
00:15:39.440 --> 00:15:40.480
It's Arizona State.
00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:41.519
They're in the Big 12.
00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:52.000
Like, why are you talking about him starting at Arizona State as if he at Ohio State or Oregon or somewhere like that?
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:54.879
Don't do that.
00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:56.720
Arizona State.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:15:59.200
It's Arizona State.
00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:00.559
I mean, the name itself.
00:16:00.639 --> 00:16:01.440
Like, come on.
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:04.159
Joe was at Ohio State and he couldn't win the job.
00:16:04.240 --> 00:16:05.120
Fair enough.
00:16:05.360 --> 00:16:06.720
That's true.
00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:13.519
So he leaves, goes to LSU, never played, didn't play much at Ohio State.
00:16:13.759 --> 00:16:17.840
Came to the SEC, the big dog conference, and got off.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:25.200
And you gonna poo-poo that and say that, well, he was a cog in the system and not the system.
00:16:26.159 --> 00:16:27.519
They go 15 and 0.
00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:28.639
He was the system.
00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:32.720
And I hated on Joe Burrow for a nice little minute.
00:16:33.039 --> 00:16:35.919
But Joe was he was a dude.
00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:38.559
Joe was like Lair Bird.
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:40.080
Like, man, that boy can play.
00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:41.759
I ain't gonna say the white boy part.
00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:43.919
But that boy can play.
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:47.039
Like he was, he was, he was, he was, he was that.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:51.120
And I'm not saying Jaden wasn't a great player at LSU.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:51.759
Clearly he was.
00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:52.879
He won the Heisman.
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:58.720
But this is this is about who helped the program more.
00:16:58.799 --> 00:16:59.919
And it's Joe.
00:17:00.080 --> 00:17:02.720
Because he got the Heisman and the Championship.
00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:05.839
Jaden didn't even get LSU to the playoffs.
00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:15.839
I firmly believe that Cam Newton is the best Auburn athlete in Auburn history.
00:17:16.960 --> 00:17:20.559
Because he got a Heisman and a championship.
00:17:21.279 --> 00:17:29.279
Had he just got the Heisman and not a championship, I don't think he'll be where he's at as far as how Auburn fans see him.
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:36.079
They see him as this mythical athlete because he got both.
00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:40.799
So while I can understand that Jaden didn't want someone to have his number, I get that.
00:17:41.039 --> 00:17:43.519
I can understand that you feel disrespected.
00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:45.279
That's how you feel.
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:54.480
But when someone comes out and says that you did more for the university, that you did more for the program, that's just simply not true.
00:17:54.960 --> 00:17:58.319
Burrow did more for LSU.
00:17:59.200 --> 00:18:00.640
Both are great.
00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:05.200
Both were incredible college athletes.
00:18:05.519 --> 00:18:13.359
The only difference is one got a national championship and one didn't.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:15.519
I rest my case.
00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:18.960
The SEC used to have this.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:26.559
If you come here to one of these bigger schools, it's more likely you're gonna play for a national championship than anywhere else.
00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:31.039
It's more than likely you're gonna go to the pros than anywhere else.
00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:42.240
There's this thing that if you start a certain amount of games at LSU, your percentages as a wide receiver going to the league are astronomical compared to other schools based on the receivers that have gone in.
00:18:42.400 --> 00:18:46.880
We remember Nick Saban would basically camp out on the stage with Roger Goodell, right?
00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:49.279
Because at the time the SEC could offer you more.
00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:56.319
It can offer you better coaching, it can offer you better opportunity, it can offer you better competition, you can play in bigger stadiums, right?
00:18:56.400 --> 00:18:58.640
You can win more games, learn more all these things.
00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:00.960
No, they don't mind it because they're going for the bag.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:03.759
So whatever the bag, that's what they're gonna play.
00:19:03.839 --> 00:19:08.240
And encouraging me in the end, they just said, we're just gonna get a team full of grown men.
00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:13.359
They showed a picture another nigga, a little industry when he was 18, and the world industry when he was 24.
00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:14.799
That's two different humans.
00:19:15.039 --> 00:19:18.880
Everybody on the other team was uh industry 24, right?
00:19:19.119 --> 00:19:32.559
And so teams are understanding how to utilize this NIML transfer portal era in a better way than some of these SEC schools have been, and SEC still schools still splitting them up, still beating each other up.
00:19:32.720 --> 00:19:34.960
But they do have to figure out a way to go win.
00:19:35.359 --> 00:19:37.119
It ain't the same, right?
00:19:37.279 --> 00:19:40.720
The the script has flipped on the SEC.
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:42.400
Are they still great teams?
00:19:42.559 --> 00:19:43.200
Absolutely.
00:19:43.440 --> 00:19:48.240
Are there those top one, two, three teams in the country like we used to have?
00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:49.599
Absolutely not.
00:19:50.960 --> 00:19:59.119
To close out the show, that was uh that sound bite was Ryan Clark on his podcast called The Pivot.
00:19:59.519 --> 00:20:01.920
His words are interesting to me.
00:20:02.720 --> 00:20:15.839
He mentions that players wanted to come to the SEC because they'd have the best chance to win a championship and claim that's no more.
00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:17.359
I disagree with that.
00:20:17.599 --> 00:20:18.720
That's not true.
00:20:18.960 --> 00:20:23.680
The SEC had five teams in the college football playoffs just last year.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:36.799
He goes on to say that Nick Sabin used to camp out on the stage with Roger Goodell, that is the um NFL's commissioner, and claims that's no more.
00:20:37.119 --> 00:20:39.279
Brian Clark is also wrong about that.
00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:49.839
The SEC has had the most draft picks of any conference over the last like five, seven, eight years.
00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:53.920
So again, that's not true.
00:20:54.799 --> 00:21:02.880
Now, do they need to catch up in the in the NIL and transfer and transfer space?
00:21:03.599 --> 00:21:03.920
No.
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:08.880
I think they are right there with everyone else.
00:21:09.039 --> 00:21:12.640
They are right there with the Big Ten in particular.
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:26.079
This notion that they are behind all because the Big Ten has won the national championship the last three years, and I get it, it's been three separate teams.
00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:32.400
We've all heard it, that does not mean that the SEC is behind.
00:21:33.680 --> 00:21:36.640
So that notion to me is just wrong.
00:21:37.039 --> 00:21:42.640
It does highlight that the SEC is more difficult.
00:21:43.519 --> 00:21:50.480
It does highlight that the SEC probably shouldn't have gone to a nine game conference schedule.
00:21:50.799 --> 00:21:56.160
He also adds that players play against that they play against the best and this, that, and the other.
00:21:56.240 --> 00:21:59.119
And all that is still true.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:07.279
Regarding the SEC, you do play the best players week in and week out.
00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:21.680
Caleb Downs, who was at Alabama, I want to say for two years, transferred to Ohio State and said himself that week in and week out, the Big Ten was easier.
00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:24.079
He asked, Are there still good teams?
00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:24.559
Yes.
00:22:24.799 --> 00:22:26.240
Do we have any top dogs?
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:26.640
No.
00:22:26.799 --> 00:22:29.680
And I just think he's just he's wrong again.
00:22:30.319 --> 00:22:36.400
Look, Kirk Signetti is the new kid on the block.
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:37.440
Right?
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:39.359
Saving disciple.
00:22:40.480 --> 00:22:48.240
Smug, cocky, walking around like he's just the best thing since sliced bread.
00:22:48.319 --> 00:22:48.720
I get it.
00:22:48.799 --> 00:22:49.519
You won.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:50.880
Talk your talk, King.
00:22:51.039 --> 00:22:52.319
Talk your talk.
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:55.920
Everybody's like, well, look what Indiana's doing.
00:22:56.400 --> 00:23:01.200
But he mentioned in the video they got 24 and 25 year olds.
00:23:01.359 --> 00:23:04.079
They might as well be 30-year-old players out there.
00:23:04.799 --> 00:23:06.480
No wonder they're winning.
00:23:06.720 --> 00:23:09.200
Look who they play week in and week out.
00:23:09.680 --> 00:23:13.680
Like, go back and look at Indiana's schedule from last season.
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:14.960
It's horrible.
00:23:15.119 --> 00:23:16.880
Especially non-conference.
00:23:17.119 --> 00:23:19.039
No wonder they went undefeated.
00:23:19.759 --> 00:23:24.799
All this Indiana talk, honestly, is is on my nerves.
00:23:25.279 --> 00:23:31.359
Why we acting like they the next Alabama or they the next Georgia?
00:23:32.079 --> 00:23:35.200
They won one championship.
00:23:35.839 --> 00:23:36.480
One.
00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:40.240
They haven't reeled off multiple.
00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:48.640
I would love, or I should say, I can't wait to see how see what happens this season with them.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:53.440
Because that schedule they have is much more difficult than last season's schedule.
00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:56.559
Their non-conference sucks again.
00:23:57.039 --> 00:24:01.279
North Texas, Howard, Western Kentucky.
00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:06.720
But they then play Ohio State.
00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:14.160
They go to Michigan, USC, at home, on the road at Washington.
00:24:15.440 --> 00:24:17.519
Those are all quality teams.
00:24:17.839 --> 00:24:21.920
Going to Nebraska won't be a walk in the park.
00:24:22.240 --> 00:24:23.680
So we're going to see.
00:24:24.640 --> 00:24:29.759
We're going to see just how good Indiana is.
00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:32.400
Going to the portal all the time.
00:24:32.880 --> 00:24:34.559
That can't be good for culture.
00:24:34.799 --> 00:24:36.079
But we're going to see.
00:24:36.400 --> 00:24:38.559
Kirk, we're going to see.
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:43.920
I'm very, very curious to see how that season unfolds.
00:24:44.640 --> 00:24:47.680
This has been the third down conversation.
00:24:48.160 --> 00:24:52.559
Please remember to like, subscribe, and share the show.
00:24:53.440 --> 00:24:59.039
Remember, every down matters, but the conversation starts here.
00:24:59.759 --> 00:25:06.079
Until next time, keep the chains moving and keep the conversation going.
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.680
Jesus loves you, and I'm out.
00:25:10.160 --> 00:25:11.039
Peace.
00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:01.679
Teams will follow.
00:00:01.840 --> 00:00:17.679
And it's understandable, Dusty, to have those conversations and that question because the committee has not shown us that a nine-win, non-conference champion will make it to the playoffs because ultimately they're still gonna they're still looking at the amount of wins in the win column at the end of the year.
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:18.559
And that's a shame.
00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:23.120
And they say they're gonna talk about the stretch of schedule, but they have not shown us that yet.
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:30.800
Welcome to the third down conversation here, plays for sports and entertainment.
00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:34.320
I am the turnip seed.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.520
Let's talk about it.
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:47.280
Welcome to the third down conversation, my good people, where sports meets real opinions and honest conversations.
00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:51.439
This isn't just about what happened on the field or on the court.
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:54.560
It's about why it happened and what it all means.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:57.439
This is the third down conversation.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:00:59.119
Let's talk about it.
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:05.120
The soundbite you just heard was Roman Harper of the SEC Network.
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:08.319
On first listen, it can't appear that Mr.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:11.040
Harper is minimizing winning.
00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:21.359
However, if you allow his words to marinate just a little bit, what he's actually expressing is that teams should be rewarded for playing a difficult schedule.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:30.640
The college football playoff committee since its creation has never had any consistent criteria on how they select teams.
00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:35.120
It puts you in mind of the NBA MVP voting.
00:01:35.359 --> 00:01:38.319
The criteria just changes from year to year.
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:46.560
Florida State goes undefeated, wins their conference championship, and somehow gets left out of the college football playoffs.
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:51.599
Last season, two group of five teams make the playoffs.
00:01:52.319 --> 00:02:00.079
James Madison and Tulane over the likes of a 9-3 Texas and a 10-2 Notre Dame.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:02.400
How is that even possible?
00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:07.439
So I figured maybe I can help out the playoff committee.
00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:10.400
I've come up with a formula.
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.120
Four simple data points to judge teams by.
00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:28.400
The data that I would look at when it comes to selecting teams would be strength of record, strength of schedule, wins against top 25 teams, and teams overall record.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:36.879
Strength of schedule wins against top 25 teams, and a team's overall record, those are pretty self-explanatory.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:40.960
Strength of schedule is simply who did you play?
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:44.960
Wins against top 25 teams, how many did you beat?
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:47.039
That were ranked in the top 25.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:52.159
And then a team's overall record is what did you accomplish?
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:54.240
So those are pretty straightforward.
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:58.240
Therefore, the one I really want to focus on is strength of record.
00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:01.680
Because it can be a tad bit confusing.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:11.599
But it asks one simple question How impressive is this team's record based on who they had to be to get it?
00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:16.719
For example, let's do a blind reveal.
00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:18.479
I'm not going to tell you who the teams are.
00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:22.159
I'm just going to explain what they accomplished last season.
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:25.520
Team A went 9-3.
00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:35.759
Of those nine wins, they beat two teams that won 10 games, and they beat one team that won 11 games.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:48.560
Team B went 10-2 with wins over a team that won 10 games, 9 games, and two wins over teams that won eight games.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:54.000
Team A also beat team B head-to-head.
00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:00.400
Of those two teams, who has the strongest record?
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:05.199
If you said Team A, you'd be correct.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:11.520
Team A will be Texas, while Team B is Oklahoma.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:14.240
Texas missed the playoffs.
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:16.319
Oklahoma made the playoffs.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:22.000
If you look at both teams' schedule, they both played a quality out of conference opponent.
00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:29.360
Texas played Ohio State at Ohio State while Oklahoma played Michigan at home.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:31.120
Texas lost by seven.
00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:32.560
Oklahoma won.
00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:41.040
Texas does have a bad loss against Florida, but they beat Oklahoma head to head.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:45.759
Oklahoma has a really good win at Alabama.
00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:51.600
However, Texas beat Texas AM, who won 11 games.
00:04:52.480 --> 00:05:09.519
So if you really just look at both teams' schedule and then see what they accomplish, even though Oklahoma is 10-2, Texas 9-3 record is a bit stronger than Oklahoma's 10-2 record.
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:17.680
For this reason, I think strength of record should be the number one data point that the playoff committee uses.
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:27.920
I do understand that strength of record can be a bit of a fluid metric because it's attached to teams' week in and week out performance.
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:29.759
But what does that create?
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:30.959
Drama.
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:33.279
And what do fans love?
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:35.120
Drama.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:49.279
The next thing I would add as far as the terminal teams that make the playoffs, I would give them bonus credit for playing a powerful team on the road or at a neutral site.
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:53.199
I think that helps incentivize quality matchups.
00:05:53.439 --> 00:06:00.639
I think that increases our opportunity of seeing teams actually schedule these matchups and not cancel them.
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:05.439
Like Indiana and Notre Dame just canceled their series recently.
00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:13.360
The next thing I would do is that I would not penalize teams for losing against quality teams.
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:16.800
As long as you lose a close game.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:23.439
For instance, Texas played Ohio State at Ohio State and lost by seven.
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:26.639
I wouldn't penalize Texas for that.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:34.399
And the reason why I would not penalize these teams is because I want to incentivize teams to schedule quality opponents.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:38.000
The fans are here for the competition.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:41.920
Nobody wants to see cupcakes week in and week out.
00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:52.800
The last thing that I would do is I would eliminate auto bids for the highest five-ranked conference champions.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:59.920
This will be removed because that's how we got two group of five teams in a 12-team playoff last season.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:04.319
Auto bids are simply for the Power Four.
00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:07.680
And that's because competition has to matter.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:09.279
It just has to.
00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:14.959
So, all in all, playoff committee, here's how this formula stacks up.
00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:27.360
When you're comparing teams and you look at their schedules, their strength of record should be 50% of their of their grade or score, however you want to call it.
00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:31.120
Strength of schedule is 25%.
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:37.279
Wins against top 25 teams and a team's overall record, 12%.
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:49.040
And the reason why the wins against top 25 teams is so low for me is because look, preseason rankings, they are guests.
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.199
Educated guests, but a guest.
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:56.639
So I don't put a lot of a lot of stock into preseason rankings.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:59.199
For me, they don't really mean anything.
00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:00.720
I think they are fun.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:02.000
I think we should keep them.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:08.399
It creates conversation, but they're pointless in the grand scheme of things.
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:17.680
Using this formula, though, will create transparency for fans because now we know what the criteria is.
00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:26.079
And like I've said, and I will continue to say this, it incentivizes teams to play quality opponents.
00:08:26.480 --> 00:08:28.879
And that is what we're here for.
00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:33.440
We want to see those big matchups, we want to see those exciting matchups.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:36.879
So playoff committee, I've laid it out for you.
00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:40.000
Make it happen, and you can thank me later.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:46.399
Jaden Daniels transferred to LSU because he wanted to change the university.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:50.720
Joe Burrow transferred to LSU because he had nowhere else to go.
00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:58.399
When Jaden Daniels transferred to LSU, he had already been a starting quarterback at Arizona State University for three years.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:05.200
He didn't have to go anywhere, but he chose to go to a bad LSU team that was six and seven the year prior.
00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:10.639
And he turned them to a nine and three team and then a nine and four team and won the Heisman there.
00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:15.840
Joe Burrow transferred to LSU because he couldn't play at Ohio State.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.679
It wasn't his first option.
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:22.720
Joe Burrow transferred to an already stacked LSU team that was nine and four without them.
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:26.559
And then the next season he improved them to 10 and 3.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:28.879
Joe Burrow's final year, he won the Heisman.
00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:36.559
He was 15-0, but LSU as a program fell off when he left because they were five and five the following season.
00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:40.000
Jaden Daniels transformed LSU as a program.
00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:43.519
Joe Burrow came to LSU as a backup plan.
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:48.879
Okay, so I'm not sure who was speaking on this soundbite.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.960
So um I can't give credit.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:54.000
I wish I could, but I'm not sure who the guy is.
00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:58.320
I just want to address what are you saying?
00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:10.639
I found this clip on Twitter and the caption reads Jaden Daniels did more for LSU as a program than Joe Burrow.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:18.080
Now the part that I want you to remember about that caption is as a program.
00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:26.080
Now before I dive into this completely, I want to give a bit of a backstory to what's happening here.
00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:39.279
Noticed to LSU that they could no longer use his name, image, and likeness anymore.
00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:52.240
And it's all due to LSU now coach Lane Kiffin allowing a defensive back, I think he's a cornerback, to wear Jaden Daniels' jersey, which is number five.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:56.240
For the record, that number is not retired.
00:10:57.039 --> 00:11:13.679
Jaden Daniels' representation stated that himself, meaning Jaden, and his family is deeply hurt and feel disrespected because LSU has allowed someone to wear his number.
00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:16.960
I'm assuming he didn't give his blessing.
00:11:17.759 --> 00:11:25.120
Now, if you have forgotten, Jaden won the Heisman Trophy at LSU.
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:28.480
So all of this is surrounding that.
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:34.159
That then turned to why is he so upset?
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:40.000
It's not like he won or brought a championship to LSU.
00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:44.480
That is where Joe Burrow comes in.
00:11:45.279 --> 00:11:49.360
Because people are saying, well, no one has number nine.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:52.559
They're not doing Joe Burrow like this.
00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:57.759
And the rebuttal is well, Burrow won a championship.
00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:09.120
So now that prompts this guy to say that Jaden has done more for LSU as a program than Joe Burrow.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:14.879
And I think he's completely wrong.
00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:17.360
Completely wrong.
00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:22.799
LSU has always been LSU.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:25.840
Like I'm in I'm in my mid-30s, right?
00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:31.679
And since my since I came to really love college football, LSU has been really good.
00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:32.639
Like all the time.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:35.679
They've always been one of those top teams in the country.
00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:44.480
So LSU was never uh some university or program that needed saving.
00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:46.799
Did they have bad seasons?
00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:47.519
Sure.
00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.440
Most programs do have bad seasons from time to time.
00:12:52.639 --> 00:12:56.159
But let's not treat them like they're Vanderbilt.
00:12:56.480 --> 00:13:02.879
Let's not treat them like they're Rutgers or Northwestern.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:05.279
No disrespect to those schools, by the way.
00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:13.919
But LSU has a very, very historic and prideful history.
00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:17.440
It's a prestigious university and program.
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:24.399
So don't make it seem like Jaden was some savior for LSU.
00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:27.919
That's so far from the actual truth.
00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:31.919
We're talking about a program that was great with Nick Saban.
00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:37.200
We're talking about a program that was great with Les Miles.
00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:43.919
We're talking about a program that won a national championship with Ed Oron.
00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:46.559
Can't even make out half stuff he's saying.
00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:47.840
They won a championship.
00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.840
And those three coaches that I just mentioned all got a national championship at LSU.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:00.799
So easy on the Jaden came and saved LSU.
00:14:01.679 --> 00:14:04.960
Now let's compare Jaden and Burrow.
00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:07.919
And I can hear it.
00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:11.360
It hasn't been said yet out loud, but I can hear it.
00:14:11.519 --> 00:14:15.120
This is not a race thing, so don't make it a race thing.
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:19.279
We're simply talking about what they accomplished.
00:14:19.519 --> 00:14:20.559
That's it.
00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:21.840
For the program.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:22.720
That's it.
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:24.960
So keep it about that.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:35.279
So if you look at just what happened on the field, Joe Burrough clearly did more for the program.
00:14:36.720 --> 00:14:39.759
Winning a Heisman doesn't do much for your program.
00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:44.080
It does a lot for said individual.
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:49.440
But that doesn't help the program per se.
00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:52.240
Winning a championship.
00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:56.799
Oh yeah, that changes a lot of things for your program.
00:14:57.759 --> 00:14:59.600
And Burrow did that.
00:15:00.159 --> 00:15:05.039
You want to say, well, the team was stacked when Burrow joined?
00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:06.879
That's fair.
00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:11.360
They had uh Jordan Jefferson, Jamar Chase.
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:14.639
Both of those guys are tanning up in the NFL.
00:15:14.960 --> 00:15:18.720
They're probably 1A and 1B as far as the best receivers in the league.
00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:19.919
That's fair.
00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:23.360
But they wouldn't win it without Joe.
00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:26.399
So you got to put some respect on that.
00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:33.039
You say that, well, Jaden Daniels was a starter at Arizona State, and he came there as like he alright.
00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:36.960
I'm choosing to be at LSU because I'm this, that, and then third.
00:15:37.039 --> 00:15:38.960
Bro, is Arizona State?
00:15:39.440 --> 00:15:40.480
It's Arizona State.
00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:41.519
They're in the Big 12.
00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:52.000
Like, why are you talking about him starting at Arizona State as if he at Ohio State or Oregon or somewhere like that?
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:54.879
Don't do that.
00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:56.720
Arizona State.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:15:59.200
It's Arizona State.
00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:00.559
I mean, the name itself.
00:16:00.639 --> 00:16:01.440
Like, come on.
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:04.159
Joe was at Ohio State and he couldn't win the job.
00:16:04.240 --> 00:16:05.120
Fair enough.
00:16:05.360 --> 00:16:06.720
That's true.
00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:13.519
So he leaves, goes to LSU, never played, didn't play much at Ohio State.
00:16:13.759 --> 00:16:17.840
Came to the SEC, the big dog conference, and got off.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:25.200
And you gonna poo-poo that and say that, well, he was a cog in the system and not the system.
00:16:26.159 --> 00:16:27.519
They go 15 and 0.
00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:28.639
He was the system.
00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:32.720
And I hated on Joe Burrow for a nice little minute.
00:16:33.039 --> 00:16:35.919
But Joe was he was a dude.
00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:38.559
Joe was like Lair Bird.
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:40.080
Like, man, that boy can play.
00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:41.759
I ain't gonna say the white boy part.
00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:43.919
But that boy can play.
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:47.039
Like he was, he was, he was, he was, he was that.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:51.120
And I'm not saying Jaden wasn't a great player at LSU.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:51.759
Clearly he was.
00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:52.879
He won the Heisman.
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:58.720
But this is this is about who helped the program more.
00:16:58.799 --> 00:16:59.919
And it's Joe.
00:17:00.080 --> 00:17:02.720
Because he got the Heisman and the Championship.
00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:05.839
Jaden didn't even get LSU to the playoffs.
00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:15.839
I firmly believe that Cam Newton is the best Auburn athlete in Auburn history.
00:17:16.960 --> 00:17:20.559
Because he got a Heisman and a championship.
00:17:21.279 --> 00:17:29.279
Had he just got the Heisman and not a championship, I don't think he'll be where he's at as far as how Auburn fans see him.
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:36.079
They see him as this mythical athlete because he got both.
00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:40.799
So while I can understand that Jaden didn't want someone to have his number, I get that.
00:17:41.039 --> 00:17:43.519
I can understand that you feel disrespected.
00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:45.279
That's how you feel.
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:54.480
But when someone comes out and says that you did more for the university, that you did more for the program, that's just simply not true.
00:17:54.960 --> 00:17:58.319
Burrow did more for LSU.
00:17:59.200 --> 00:18:00.640
Both are great.
00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:05.200
Both were incredible college athletes.
00:18:05.519 --> 00:18:13.359
The only difference is one got a national championship and one didn't.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:15.519
I rest my case.
00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:18.960
The SEC used to have this.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:26.559
If you come here to one of these bigger schools, it's more likely you're gonna play for a national championship than anywhere else.
00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:31.039
It's more than likely you're gonna go to the pros than anywhere else.
00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:42.240
There's this thing that if you start a certain amount of games at LSU, your percentages as a wide receiver going to the league are astronomical compared to other schools based on the receivers that have gone in.
00:18:42.400 --> 00:18:46.880
We remember Nick Saban would basically camp out on the stage with Roger Goodell, right?
00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:49.279
Because at the time the SEC could offer you more.
00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:56.319
It can offer you better coaching, it can offer you better opportunity, it can offer you better competition, you can play in bigger stadiums, right?
00:18:56.400 --> 00:18:58.640
You can win more games, learn more all these things.
00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:00.960
No, they don't mind it because they're going for the bag.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:03.759
So whatever the bag, that's what they're gonna play.
00:19:03.839 --> 00:19:08.240
And encouraging me in the end, they just said, we're just gonna get a team full of grown men.
00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:13.359
They showed a picture another nigga, a little industry when he was 18, and the world industry when he was 24.
00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:14.799
That's two different humans.
00:19:15.039 --> 00:19:18.880
Everybody on the other team was uh industry 24, right?
00:19:19.119 --> 00:19:32.559
And so teams are understanding how to utilize this NIML transfer portal era in a better way than some of these SEC schools have been, and SEC still schools still splitting them up, still beating each other up.
00:19:32.720 --> 00:19:34.960
But they do have to figure out a way to go win.
00:19:35.359 --> 00:19:37.119
It ain't the same, right?
00:19:37.279 --> 00:19:40.720
The the script has flipped on the SEC.
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:42.400
Are they still great teams?
00:19:42.559 --> 00:19:43.200
Absolutely.
00:19:43.440 --> 00:19:48.240
Are there those top one, two, three teams in the country like we used to have?
00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:49.599
Absolutely not.
00:19:50.960 --> 00:19:59.119
To close out the show, that was uh that sound bite was Ryan Clark on his podcast called The Pivot.
00:19:59.519 --> 00:20:01.920
His words are interesting to me.
00:20:02.720 --> 00:20:15.839
He mentions that players wanted to come to the SEC because they'd have the best chance to win a championship and claim that's no more.
00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:17.359
I disagree with that.
00:20:17.599 --> 00:20:18.720
That's not true.
00:20:18.960 --> 00:20:23.680
The SEC had five teams in the college football playoffs just last year.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:36.799
He goes on to say that Nick Sabin used to camp out on the stage with Roger Goodell, that is the um NFL's commissioner, and claims that's no more.
00:20:37.119 --> 00:20:39.279
Brian Clark is also wrong about that.
00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:49.839
The SEC has had the most draft picks of any conference over the last like five, seven, eight years.
00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:53.920
So again, that's not true.
00:20:54.799 --> 00:21:02.880
Now, do they need to catch up in the in the NIL and transfer and transfer space?
00:21:03.599 --> 00:21:03.920
No.
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:08.880
I think they are right there with everyone else.
00:21:09.039 --> 00:21:12.640
They are right there with the Big Ten in particular.
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:26.079
This notion that they are behind all because the Big Ten has won the national championship the last three years, and I get it, it's been three separate teams.
00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:32.400
We've all heard it, that does not mean that the SEC is behind.
00:21:33.680 --> 00:21:36.640
So that notion to me is just wrong.
00:21:37.039 --> 00:21:42.640
It does highlight that the SEC is more difficult.
00:21:43.519 --> 00:21:50.480
It does highlight that the SEC probably shouldn't have gone to a nine game conference schedule.
00:21:50.799 --> 00:21:56.160
He also adds that players play against that they play against the best and this, that, and the other.
00:21:56.240 --> 00:21:59.119
And all that is still true.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:07.279
Regarding the SEC, you do play the best players week in and week out.
00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:21.680
Caleb Downs, who was at Alabama, I want to say for two years, transferred to Ohio State and said himself that week in and week out, the Big Ten was easier.
00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:24.079
He asked, Are there still good teams?
00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:24.559
Yes.
00:22:24.799 --> 00:22:26.240
Do we have any top dogs?
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:26.640
No.
00:22:26.799 --> 00:22:29.680
And I just think he's just he's wrong again.
00:22:30.319 --> 00:22:36.400
Look, Kirk Signetti is the new kid on the block.
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:37.440
Right?
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:39.359
Saving disciple.
00:22:40.480 --> 00:22:48.240
Smug, cocky, walking around like he's just the best thing since sliced bread.
00:22:48.319 --> 00:22:48.720
I get it.
00:22:48.799 --> 00:22:49.519
You won.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:50.880
Talk your talk, King.
00:22:51.039 --> 00:22:52.319
Talk your talk.
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:55.920
Everybody's like, well, look what Indiana's doing.
00:22:56.400 --> 00:23:01.200
But he mentioned in the video they got 24 and 25 year olds.
00:23:01.359 --> 00:23:04.079
They might as well be 30-year-old players out there.
00:23:04.799 --> 00:23:06.480
No wonder they're winning.
00:23:06.720 --> 00:23:09.200
Look who they play week in and week out.
00:23:09.680 --> 00:23:13.680
Like, go back and look at Indiana's schedule from last season.
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:14.960
It's horrible.
00:23:15.119 --> 00:23:16.880
Especially non-conference.
00:23:17.119 --> 00:23:19.039
No wonder they went undefeated.
00:23:19.759 --> 00:23:24.799
All this Indiana talk, honestly, is is on my nerves.
00:23:25.279 --> 00:23:31.359
Why we acting like they the next Alabama or they the next Georgia?
00:23:32.079 --> 00:23:35.200
They won one championship.
00:23:35.839 --> 00:23:36.480
One.
00:23:37.839 --> 00:23:40.240
They haven't reeled off multiple.
00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:48.640
I would love, or I should say, I can't wait to see how see what happens this season with them.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:53.440
Because that schedule they have is much more difficult than last season's schedule.
00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:56.559
Their non-conference sucks again.
00:23:57.039 --> 00:24:01.279
North Texas, Howard, Western Kentucky.
00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:06.720
But they then play Ohio State.
00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:14.160
They go to Michigan, USC, at home, on the road at Washington.
00:24:15.440 --> 00:24:17.519
Those are all quality teams.
00:24:17.839 --> 00:24:21.920
Going to Nebraska won't be a walk in the park.
00:24:22.240 --> 00:24:23.680
So we're going to see.
00:24:24.640 --> 00:24:29.759
We're going to see just how good Indiana is.
00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:32.400
Going to the portal all the time.
00:24:32.880 --> 00:24:34.559
That can't be good for culture.
00:24:34.799 --> 00:24:36.079
But we're going to see.
00:24:36.400 --> 00:24:38.559
Kirk, we're going to see.
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:43.920
I'm very, very curious to see how that season unfolds.
00:24:44.640 --> 00:24:47.680
This has been the third down conversation.
00:24:48.160 --> 00:24:52.559
Please remember to like, subscribe, and share the show.
00:24:53.440 --> 00:24:59.039
Remember, every down matters, but the conversation starts here.
00:24:59.759 --> 00:25:06.079
Until next time, keep the chains moving and keep the conversation going.
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.680
Jesus loves you, and I'm out.
00:25:10.160 --> 00:25:11.039
Peace.
