00:00:00.771 -->
00:00:06.187Hi, friends. Welcome to the Triple Margin Freedom Podcast, the podcast that's
00:00:06.187 -->
00:00:11.156designed for entrepreneurs, executives, and nonprofit leaders,
00:00:11.766 -->
00:00:17.019those people who are building, leading, doing something bigger than themselves.
00:00:17.855 -->
00:00:25.727This podcast is here to help you open up profit, time, and teamwork that runs Unstoppable.
00:00:25.918 -->
00:00:28.977I'm your host, Mark Mathai, and today I'm in studio and we're going to do a
00:00:28.977 -->
00:00:32.687monologue and the monologue is going to be in a new format, a little bit shorter
00:00:32.687 -->
00:00:37.167format for these intermittent kind of monologue type podcasts.
00:00:37.167 -->
00:00:40.357And then we'll leave the interview podcast to just be interview podcast.
00:00:40.357 -->
00:00:44.827But today I'm going to answer a question that I think is a really important
00:00:44.827 -->
00:00:48.117question that came in through one of my socials.
00:00:48.794 -->
00:00:54.234He said this, I know I need and want expert support for my business.
00:00:54.698 -->
00:00:55.807Something like coaching.
00:00:57.705 -->
00:01:02.053I even know who seems to be the right fit, but I'm too busy.
00:01:02.688 -->
00:01:07.642I'm not even keeping up at home with my wife and children.
00:01:08.373 -->
00:01:14.550So my question to you is, when should I add coaching? When is the right time to move?
00:01:15.342 -->
00:01:20.839Okay, that's a great question and it's a fair question. And honestly, one that I get a lot.
00:01:21.489 -->
00:01:24.752And so when is the right time to bring in a coach?
00:01:25.332 -->
00:01:31.047The first thing that I would have to say about that is unlike most activities
00:01:31.047 -->
00:01:36.803or most programs or most things you bring in to your business or your life.
00:01:38.164 -->
00:01:42.559Coaching isn't additive like all those other things.
00:01:43.604 -->
00:01:47.161And what I mean is when you sign up for a program, you sign up for a class,
00:01:47.161 -->
00:01:51.421you sign up for school, whatever, it's additive, right? You add a day or two
00:01:51.421 -->
00:01:53.796out to process to do this.
00:01:54.307 -->
00:02:00.664Coaching's a bit different in that the ask of you is really to think and to meet.
00:02:01.058 -->
00:02:06.021So there's a little bit of that. But coaching itself, the very nature of what
00:02:06.021 -->
00:02:10.132coaching stands for and should bring is leverage.
00:02:10.521 -->
00:02:12.123It's not added. It's not adding.
00:02:12.993 -->
00:02:18.531And for most busy owners or executives or nonprofit executives that I work with.
00:02:19.530 -->
00:02:27.431That busyness requires the right leverage to get out of the cycle of busyness and back into the cycle,
00:02:28.069 -->
00:02:35.307of controlled execution, of predictable success, and of moving your organization forward.
00:02:35.307 -->
00:02:39.307So here's three things that I'll share with you that hopefully after this podcast,
00:02:39.307 -->
00:02:40.560you'll have a better idea on.
00:02:40.932 -->
00:02:46.557Short answer to the question, don't wait until the fire stop because you are
00:02:46.557 -->
00:02:49.387fooling yourself if you think they're going to stop.
00:02:50.173 -->
00:02:53.952You're always going to be through another iteration, another cycle, another challenge.
00:02:54.504 -->
00:03:00.887So the best time to bring on a coach is when you find the right coach for your
00:03:00.887 -->
00:03:04.947circumstances, when you develop the right need for that coach.
00:03:04.947 -->
00:03:11.697So if your family life and fatherhood is breaking down and your business remains
00:03:11.697 -->
00:03:14.537challenging, I would say that's the best time to bring in a coach.
00:03:14.537 -->
00:03:16.714Why? Because we want to salvage that.
00:03:17.120 -->
00:03:22.837We want to use leverage to actually get your time back. So that's the short
00:03:22.837 -->
00:03:24.399answer, and here's how you get it done.
00:03:24.951 -->
00:03:29.107So the first thing when I encounter that with my clients is I really want to
00:03:29.107 -->
00:03:33.251know what the root cause of the busyness is in the business.
00:03:33.860 -->
00:03:39.729Now, it's probably a people challenge, a process challenge, or a policy challenge.
00:03:40.078 -->
00:03:43.907I threw in policy challenge because if I work with a larger corporation,
00:03:43.907 -->
00:03:50.741maybe I'm working with a C-suite executive, a lot of times we're ruled by compliance or the policy problem.
00:03:51.194 -->
00:03:57.185But it's important that we get a hold of what is the root problem that's causing this. Okay.
00:03:57.696 -->
00:03:59.571This is where coaching helps.
00:04:00.487 -->
00:04:06.887Coaching helps you identify what that root problem is, and then we can move
00:04:06.887 -->
00:04:09.067forward with intention.
00:04:09.368 -->
00:04:14.157Again, we're lining up behind the right domino, the one domino that could knock
00:04:14.157 -->
00:04:16.770over all the other dominoes for you.
00:04:17.443 -->
00:04:19.817So let me ask you this question before we leave here.
00:04:20.619 -->
00:04:24.642What is the root cause of your busyness? Is it a people issue?
00:04:25.223 -->
00:04:31.022Is it a process issue? Or is it a policy issue? sit with that a little bit and answer that number two.
00:04:32.065 -->
00:04:37.219Being stuck in firefighting mode, okay? Now, this is typically what happens
00:04:37.219 -->
00:04:40.471when we get in there. Now, there is some thrill to firefighting.
00:04:40.813 -->
00:04:46.548Some people get stuck in firefighting mode because firefighting mode actually
00:04:46.891 -->
00:04:51.732develops into a habit so deeply ingrained, it becomes part of your self-worth.
00:04:52.075 -->
00:04:54.779So if there's not a fire to put out, or if you're not running around,
00:04:54.779 -->
00:04:57.264if you're not half stressed, or if your blood pressure's not up,
00:04:57.560 -->
00:04:59.563you're actually disappointed in yourself.
00:05:00.263 -->
00:05:03.633Don't let your late nights be an ego issue.
00:05:04.161 -->
00:05:09.019This is where we have to do a little deep work. We have to really find out what
00:05:09.019 -->
00:05:12.689is the attraction to the firefighting mode and what are you holding back from
00:05:12.689 -->
00:05:16.429your team when you enter into firefighting mode?
00:05:16.429 -->
00:05:21.339Now, to do that, one of the questions I like to bring up to executives is to
00:05:21.339 -->
00:05:25.979get, first of all, a clear understanding of what their superpower is.
00:05:25.979 -->
00:05:28.316What is their best strength in action?
00:05:28.665 -->
00:05:33.159So I typically will ask a question like, what's the one thing that you bring
00:05:33.159 -->
00:05:36.652to your organization that if you don't bring it, it won't get done?
00:05:37.413 -->
00:05:39.038What's the one thing that you
00:05:39.259 -->
00:05:43.682really do well and that you're building the entire organization around?
00:05:44.559 -->
00:05:47.799Now, when you get clear about that one thing in you, you know exactly where
00:05:47.799 -->
00:05:52.175you need to be positioning yourself. Then we can look at this firefighting thing for what it is.
00:05:52.860 -->
00:05:58.249I was working with an executive, a nonprofit executive, who's incredibly talented,
00:05:58.249 -->
00:06:02.542incredibly smart, and was incredibly caught up in a cycle of firefighting.
00:06:04.032 -->
00:06:09.169Now flash forward when we started asking those questions we realized that the
00:06:09.169 -->
00:06:11.629superpower of this particular executive
00:06:11.629 -->
00:06:17.245was fundraising community social getting out there building it up,
00:06:17.872 -->
00:06:24.889but she was spending 90 of her time in operations putting out fires working on personnel issues.
00:06:25.720 -->
00:06:33.734So once we have clarity on that, what is her strength, then we start to imagine a new world.
00:06:33.734 -->
00:06:39.710What would it look like if you had more time to go out and network,
00:06:40.204 -->
00:06:43.245fundraise, do the things that you're really called to do?
00:06:43.814 -->
00:06:48.830And the answer would surprise you. It was like, well, that would be a relief. I would be so happy.
00:06:49.370 -->
00:06:55.424So in one key question, what is the one thing that you bring to your organization
00:06:55.424 -->
00:06:57.503that if you don't bring it, it won't get brought.
00:06:58.275 -->
00:07:03.254And then building around that helped give us a really good idea of what that
00:07:03.254 -->
00:07:09.794first domino was in that case, which was, I have to unplug from operations so
00:07:09.794 -->
00:07:12.294that I have more time to plug into this.
00:07:12.677 -->
00:07:17.263And to do that required some massive action on her part to get her team ready,
00:07:17.855 -->
00:07:21.504and to get serious about bringing her best self to work every day.
00:07:22.002 -->
00:07:28.964By the way, successful, successfully did that, opened up enough time that she
00:07:28.964 -->
00:07:30.365actually got her weekends back.
00:07:30.620 -->
00:07:34.814She actually got her family back and she's actually been able to take some new
00:07:34.814 -->
00:07:40.210hobbies and the health of the organization has never been better.
00:07:40.582 -->
00:07:45.168Isn't that awesome? Okay. Last one, the death spiral. I'm too busy.
00:07:45.661 -->
00:07:50.904The death spiral is, I'm too busy, so I work more, I sleep less,
00:07:51.205 -->
00:07:56.634I demand more of myself and everyone else. That doom spiral tends to be the
00:07:56.634 -->
00:07:58.642death of the entire organization.
00:07:59.430 -->
00:08:04.690So what if we flip the script on that? Instead of giving up.
00:08:05.874 -->
00:08:10.284Instead of going to work first, work more, sleep less, demand more,
00:08:10.284 -->
00:08:13.763what if we flip the script and we did something like this?
00:08:14.918 -->
00:08:19.382What if we prioritized your well-being? What if we prioritize sleep?
00:08:20.217 -->
00:08:24.873What if we prioritize the work that you do and the work that you share?
00:08:25.737 -->
00:08:30.951What would happen if we flipped the script on that death spiral?
00:08:30.951 -->
00:08:33.349Too busy, more work, sleep less, demand more.
00:08:34.168 -->
00:08:39.771Well, what's happened in the past is that it hasn't done anything but lift the
00:08:39.771 -->
00:08:44.281organization up. See, whatever you're fighting, whatever that spiral is for
00:08:44.281 -->
00:08:46.949you, think about flipping the script.
00:08:47.187 -->
00:08:50.481Because I want to tell you right now, when you start to prioritize things like
00:08:50.481 -->
00:08:55.781your well-being, your sleep, your health, your engagement, your attitude changes.
00:08:55.781 -->
00:08:59.250That attitude change is contagious. It leaks into your team.
00:08:59.871 -->
00:09:04.829Then you start to get, instead of demanding more, you start to ask more.
00:09:04.956 -->
00:09:10.781And when you ask more, you're not asking them to do more things and run and
00:09:10.781 -->
00:09:15.031grind. You're asking them to do more things in the same way that you'll do more
00:09:15.031 -->
00:09:18.156things in the one thing that you can do better than anybody else.
00:09:19.191 -->
00:09:24.431So I would just say this. Like a domino, we need to fix the root problem.
00:09:25.017 -->
00:09:29.441And that root problem is typically a process, a people issue,
00:09:29.441 -->
00:09:33.061including yourself, leader, or a policy issue.
00:09:33.061 -->
00:09:37.721And if you're lodged in policy, you just need a clear understanding of the purpose
00:09:37.721 -->
00:09:40.348of compliance, why it's there, and how to partner with it.
00:09:41.103 -->
00:09:44.951Coaching isn't additive. My answer, don't wait.
00:09:45.772 -->
00:09:50.311Your dark and twisty cycles will not change until you start to learn how to
00:09:50.311 -->
00:09:55.443break those habits and create for yourself new habits that can replace those.
00:09:56.296 -->
00:10:00.431So if you're interested in finding more profit for your business,
00:10:00.431 -->
00:10:03.947more time back on your calendar and teams that run Unstoppable,
00:10:04.958 -->

00:10:30.067And when we do that, I really believe that we will create more profit,
00:10:30.740 -->
00:10:35.566create more time, and give to our teams exactly what they need from us so that
00:10:35.566 -->
00:10:36.795they'll run unstoppable.
