ОБ ЭТОМ ЭПИЗОДЕ
In this episode of the Nomad Summit Podcast, Palle Bo sits down with William Campbell, a strategy, communication, and leadership advisor who has been working remotely since 2009 – long before remote work became mainstream.
William has built a remote-first professional life across communications, organizational leadership, facilitation, public sector work, nonprofits, education, and strategy. With a PhD in Organisational Communication and more than two decades of experience helping mission-driven organisations turn complexity into clarity, he brings a practical perspective on what it really takes to work well beyond the traditional office.
The conversation begins with William's early remote work experience and how he discovered that flexibility, autonomy, and intentional work rhythms could shape not just his career, but his life. From there, Palle and William explore the difference between simply working from anywhere and building a location-independent life with structure, focus, community, and purpose.
A big part of the episode centers on Atlantic Focus Voyage, a transatlantic remote work retreat at sea from Miami to Barcelona. William explains how the idea grew from conversations onboard a cruise ship, where remote workers were already gathering in quiet corners, coffee spaces, and lounges to get work done while travelling.
The Atlantic Focus Voyage is designed around eight uninterrupted sea days, creating space for deep work, peer learning, collaboration, networking, workshops, and practical conversations about the realities of remote work. Rather than positioning it as just another cruise, William describes it as a "container" for focus, momentum, and meaningful connection.
Palle also brings up Nomad Cruise, which has been part of the digital nomad event ecosystem for years. William explains how Atlantic Focus Voyage fits alongside existing nomad events, with a stronger emphasis on remote work systems, practical outcomes, cohort-based learning, and the question: what could you actually build, clarify, or move forward with the right people around you?
They also talk about the practical side of working from sea – WiFi, quiet spaces, work routines, video calls, VPNs, cabin choice, and how to balance work with the experience of travelling across the Atlantic.
By the end, the conversation widens into the future of digital nomad events and why location-independent people still crave in-person connection, even when they have the freedom to work from anywhere.
Key Takeaways
- Remote work is not new – but the way people think about it has changed dramatically since 2009.
- Freedom alone is not always enough. Remote workers also need structure, clarity, community, and accountability.
- Working from anywhere can become more powerful when it is done with intention rather than escape.
- Cruise ships can offer an unexpected environment for deep work, especially on long sea days with fewer distractions.
- Atlantic Focus Voyage is designed around remote work systems, peer learning, collaboration, and professional momentum – not just travel.
- Digital nomad events are evolving beyond talks and networking into more focused, participatory, and experience-based formats.
- There is room in the nomad ecosystem for different kinds of events, from community gatherings to deep-work retreats and niche professional experiences.
- Working from sea is possible, but remote workers need realistic expectations around WiFi, video calls, VPNs, meetings, and workflow.
- For many digital nomads and remote professionals, the next challenge is not getting freedom – it is using that freedom well.
