The Intelligence Code Ep 1: The Statistical Dawn – The History of the IQ Test & The G Factor

WEBVTT
1
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:35.320
The Intelligence Code, Episode one, the first whisperings, before there
2
00:00:35.320 --> 00:00:39.320
were numbers attached to it, before it sat trapped inside
3
00:00:39.479 --> 00:00:44.920
forms and scores and charts. Intelligence was just a quiet shimmer,
4
00:00:45.679 --> 00:00:48.479
like the breath on a window pane that disappears as
5
00:00:48.520 --> 00:00:50.759
soon as you lean in to see it more clearly.
6
00:00:53.479 --> 00:00:57.560
It was a flicker behind the eyes, a subtle tightening
7
00:00:57.600 --> 00:01:02.880
of attention, the little spark that's said, wait. What if?
8
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:11.200
It slipped between words, danced behind inventions, and it hid
9
00:01:11.239 --> 00:01:15.840
in every hunch that turned out to be right. It
10
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:21.159
was the anonymous author behind every theorem, every poem, every
11
00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:27.400
unscripted solution scratched into the margins of a notebook. It
12
00:01:27.480 --> 00:01:33.879
had no name, not really, no clean boundary, no clear definition,
13
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:39.680
just a sense something inness that reaches beyond what is
14
00:01:40.519 --> 00:01:46.200
toward what could be. But then a strange question began
15
00:01:46.280 --> 00:01:50.640
to echo through the quarridors of modern thought. What if
16
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:54.719
that shimmer could be weighed? What if the ghost of
17
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:59.120
understanding could be trapped in the precise geometry of an equation.
18
00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:03.560
What if the most intimate and mysterious part of the
19
00:02:03.640 --> 00:02:08.719
human experience could be translated into the cool, uncompromising grammar
20
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:14.000
of mathematics. In the twilight of the nineteenth century, as
21
00:02:14.120 --> 00:02:19.240
gas lamps flickered over crowded streets and steam trains stitched
22
00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:25.360
cities together, a new kind of quest quietly began, not
23
00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:30.439
for lost civilizations or buried treasure, but for numbers. Numbers
24
00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:33.400
that claimed to reveal something about the very engine of
25
00:02:33.560 --> 00:02:39.680
human understanding. A handful of restless minds decided to hunt
26
00:02:39.719 --> 00:02:44.680
for the hidden architecture of thought itself. Their question was
27
00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:49.919
deceptively simple, a kind of riddle posed to the universe.
28
00:02:52.599 --> 00:02:56.599
Is the mind a single, unbreakable diamond glowing from a
29
00:02:56.680 --> 00:03:02.120
central core of ability? Or is it a scattered constellation
30
00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:08.719
of tiny lights, separate skills, quirks, and talents, each shining
31
00:03:08.759 --> 00:03:18.240
on its own. This is the story of those first whisperings,
32
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:22.639
the first attempts to sketch the blueprint of the mind.
33
00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:30.280
The dawn of our effort to map the unseen architecture
34
00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:36.080
of intelligence using nothing more and nothing less than data, imagination,
35
00:03:36.759 --> 00:03:44.159
and a few daring equations, had begun the statistical dawn
36
00:03:44.439 --> 00:03:48.879
of Galton. To measure what cannot be touched, one must
37
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:53.000
first invent a new kind of ruler. In the nineteenth
38
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:55.719
century that ruler was not made of wood or brass.
39
00:03:56.560 --> 00:04:00.879
It was made of relationships of patterns and probability of
40
00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:06.280
numbers that whispered to each other behind the scenes. The
41
00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:10.360
greatest tools for peering into hidden connections were not microscopes
42
00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:16.639
or telescopes, but equations written in quiet ink and careful patients.
43
00:04:20.120 --> 00:04:23.639
Our chronicle begins in eighteen sixty nine in the company
44
00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:29.199
of Francis Galton. He was, in many ways a collector
45
00:04:29.240 --> 00:04:33.160
of human differences, a man fascinated by the ways people
46
00:04:33.319 --> 00:04:38.879
vary in height and speed, in sharpness of perception, and
47
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:44.360
in swiftness of thought. Where others saw a blur of individuality,
48
00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:48.199
Galton saw a puzzle begging to be arranged into some
49
00:04:48.319 --> 00:04:57.920
kind of order. Before Galton, human ability mostly lived in
50
00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:03.839
the realm of philosophy and and impression. People spoke of
51
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:08.639
genius and talent, but in vague, shimmering terms that refused
52
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:16.199
to hold still. After Galton, something changed. Ability began to
53
00:05:16.199 --> 00:05:19.759
slide from language of metaphor into the language of measurement.
54
00:05:21.079 --> 00:05:24.959
Galton's revolutionary move was to bring statistics to bear on
55
00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:30.560
the human mind. He started crafting techniques to uncover patterns
56
00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:33.759
among variables, as though he were tuning an instrument that
57
00:05:33.800 --> 00:05:38.120
could pick up faint harmonies beneath the noise. Where others
58
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:44.199
saw chaos, he suspected structure. Imagine the world through Galton's eyes,
59
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.639
a vast sea of human traits, reaction times, sensory sharpness,
60
00:05:49.800 --> 00:05:55.519
memory problem, solving every person a slightly different configuration of
61
00:05:55.560 --> 00:06:00.480
strengths and weaknesses. Galton wanted to find the invisible currents
62
00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:05.439
that connected these traits, the subtle mathematical threads running beneath them.
63
00:06:05.959 --> 00:06:10.199
If he measured enough, carefully enough, how quickly someone responds
64
00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:15.519
to a sound, how accurately they discriminate between two close shades,
65
00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:20.319
how precisely they recall a list, you might begin to
66
00:06:20.360 --> 00:06:27.600
glimpse some deeper underlying intelligence. He did not define intelligence
67
00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:31.040
in the same way we do now. There was no
68
00:06:31.240 --> 00:06:37.079
single score, no tidy label. Instead, Galvin built the scaffolding
69
00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:42.680
correlation to see how traits move together, distributions to see
70
00:06:42.680 --> 00:06:48.360
how people cluster, early statistical models to map variations like terrain.
71
00:06:50.759 --> 00:06:54.560
He became a kind of cartographer of the mind, drawing
72
00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:58.079
the first rough maps using numbers as his compass and
73
00:06:58.199 --> 00:07:06.040
human differences as his landmarks. The simple act of applying
74
00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:10.439
statistical thinking to psychological phenomena was, in its own way,
75
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:15.399
a quiet kind of magic. It transformed the vapor of
76
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:20.680
subjective impressions into data points that could be compared, examined,
77
00:07:20.759 --> 00:07:26.720
and argued over. Yet for all its elegance, Galton's work
78
00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:31.279
remained preliminary, a set of tools, a series of questions,
79
00:07:31.639 --> 00:07:34.839
a suggestion that the mind could be approached with the
80
00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:40.560
same discipline curiosity used for stars or weather. The shapes
81
00:07:40.600 --> 00:07:46.879
were still blurry, but the instruments were in place. As
82
00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:50.199
the century neared its close, the time was ripe for
83
00:07:50.279 --> 00:07:54.360
someone to do something very bold with this new statistical apparatus,
84
00:07:55.480 --> 00:07:59.040
to take these abstract insights and crystallize them into something
85
00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:04.759
more concrete and testable, something that the world could administer, record,
86
00:08:04.920 --> 00:08:10.759
and repeat. Galton had given us the grammar, someone else
87
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:16.160
was about to coin the key phrase Galton and the
88
00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:20.399
coining of the test. Every new language needs a first
89
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:24.399
defining word, something that takes the swirling complexity of a
90
00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:29.680
concept and pins it, at least tentatively, to the page.
91
00:08:29.800 --> 00:08:33.919
For the emerging science of intelligence. That word would be test.
92
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:41.159
Enter James McKean cattell. If Gatten was the explorer sketching
93
00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:45.720
distant coastlines. Cattel was the architect who began to draw
94
00:08:45.799 --> 00:08:49.879
up the floor plans. He carried the statistical spirit of
95
00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:54.559
Galton across the Atlantic and into the American university system,
96
00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:59.919
where curiosity could be institutionalized, printed in journals, and in
97
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:05.440
embedded into circula. In eighteen ninety, as the first professor
98
00:09:05.480 --> 00:09:10.679
of psychology in the United States, Catel stood at pivotal crossroads.
99
00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:18.159
Psychology was evolving from philosophical speculation into empirical science, and
100
00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:21.519
he understood that if intelligence was to be studied seriously,
101
00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:26.360
it needed procedures that were not just clever, but standardized
102
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:31.879
methods that could be repeated, shared, and compared across time
103
00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:37.320
in place. So he did something deceptively simple. He gave
104
00:09:37.320 --> 00:09:40.679
a name to the new ritual of measuring mental abilities.
105
00:09:41.399 --> 00:09:46.799
He coined the phrase mental test. Two small words easy
106
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:51.440
to overlook. Yet this phrase quietly opened a door that
107
00:09:51.480 --> 00:09:57.120
has never fully closed. A mental test suggested that the
108
00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:02.480
inner world, the labyrinth of thoughts, perceptions, and decisions, could
109
00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:05.879
be probed in a way that resembled a physical examination.
110
00:10:07.159 --> 00:10:13.639
Not just observations but experiments, not just impressions but scores.
111
00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:19.759
Kettel began to develop and administer these tests, timed reactions
112
00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:26.879
to stimuli, simple tasks requiring perception and attention, basic exercises
113
00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:32.879
meant to capture aspects of mental performance. Individually, these tasks
114
00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:39.480
may have seemed trivial, almost like intellectual games, but collectively
115
00:10:39.559 --> 00:10:44.279
they represented something radical, a structured, repeatable way of studying
116
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:48.120
the mind as if it were a measurable system. By
117
00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:52.799
naming the process a mental test, Kattel helped move the
118
00:10:52.840 --> 00:11:00.120
study of intelligence from a nebulous idea to a recognizable practice.
119
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:02.639
The phrase framed the mind as something that could be
120
00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:07.720
approached with rigor and consistency. It placed psychological inquiry on
121
00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:13.399
a new footing, one that could generate numbers, results, and comparisons.
122
00:11:13.879 --> 00:11:17.960
Yet for all this progress, there lingered a nagging, mysterious
123
00:11:18.039 --> 00:11:24.799
question under the surface. Galton could correlate traits, Cattel could
124
00:11:24.840 --> 00:11:32.039
administer tests, but what exactly were they all measuring? Were
125
00:11:32.039 --> 00:11:34.960
these tests tapped into a single, deep well of mental
126
00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:39.639
energy that nourished every cognitive act or were they merely
127
00:11:39.720 --> 00:11:45.120
sampling a crowded marketplace of separate little abilities, each test
128
00:11:45.240 --> 00:11:49.080
capturing a different vendor, none of them defining the whole.
129
00:11:51.159 --> 00:11:53.559
To answer this someone would have to look beneath the
130
00:11:53.639 --> 00:11:57.879
tests themselves, not just at the scores, but at the
131
00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:04.960
shadowy patterns of how those score moved together. The answer
132
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.440
would come from a new statistical lantern shining into the darkness,
133
00:12:10.120 --> 00:12:14.799
a process called factor analysis, and with it a ghostly
134
00:12:14.960 --> 00:12:19.320
powerful idea would step onto the stage. The General Factor
135
00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:28.000
or G. Spearman and the invisible G. The year is
136
00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:32.120
nineteen oh four. The air in the academic circles hums
137
00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:35.559
with questions, and in the midst of this hum stands
138
00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:40.039
Charles Spearman, peering curiously at something few people had thought
139
00:12:40.039 --> 00:12:44.639
to question, the way test scores seemed to stick together.
140
00:12:46.759 --> 00:12:50.759
Spearman noticed an odd pattern. A student who did well
141
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:54.360
at a verbal task often did well at a numerical task.
142
00:12:55.039 --> 00:12:58.759
Someone skilled at spatial puzzles tended to perform better than
143
00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:06.559
average on memory tests too. Across different kinds of challenges, words, numbers, shapes, recall,
144
00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:14.399
success seemed to echo. These strengths were not isolated, they resonated.
145
00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:20.240
They felt suspiciously like a secret being whispered by the data.
146
00:13:20.759 --> 00:13:24.600
If the mind were comprised of completely separate abilities, then
147
00:13:24.679 --> 00:13:27.879
doing well in one area should say little about performance.
148
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:32.600
In another, A genius in music might be hopeless at logic,
149
00:13:33.240 --> 00:13:37.360
a master of words might stumble over spatial reasoning. You
150
00:13:37.399 --> 00:13:44.559
would expect more scatter, more disconnection, but Spearmen kept seeing correlations,
151
00:13:44.600 --> 00:13:49.200
subtle but persistent. It was as though different tasks, despite
152
00:13:49.240 --> 00:13:54.480
their variety, were all tapping into something shared, something underneath.
153
00:13:55.759 --> 00:14:00.039
To investigate this invisible connection, Spearman turned to an a
154
00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:07.679
new kind of statistical sorcery, factor analysis. Factor analysis, in spirit,
155
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:10.240
is a bit like placing a prism in front of
156
00:14:10.279 --> 00:14:14.159
a beam of complex light. You take a tangle of
157
00:14:14.200 --> 00:14:20.120
test scores, words, numbers, shapes, memory, and ask is there
158
00:14:20.120 --> 00:14:23.559
a single hidden source that explains much of the variation
159
00:14:23.840 --> 00:14:28.159
in all of these? You let the mathematics sift through
160
00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:33.240
the patterns, searching for an underlying factor that invisibly influences
161
00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:38.440
everything it touches. When Spearman did this, the data answered
162
00:14:38.440 --> 00:14:43.120
with a quiet but consistent yes. Underneath the variety of
163
00:14:43.159 --> 00:14:47.399
human cognitive performance, he found evidence of a general factor,
164
00:14:48.639 --> 00:14:52.919
a hidden pulse that seemed to energize many different mental tasks.
165
00:14:54.320 --> 00:15:00.840
He named it simply G, short for general intelligence. On
166
00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:07.240
the surface, people might differ in specific talents, languages, maths, patterns, creativity.
167
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:15.080
But beneath that mosaic, Spearman proposed a single overarching resource G.
168
00:15:16.759 --> 00:15:19.440
You could think of G as kind of a mental fuel.
169
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:22.799
The more you have, the more easily you can power
170
00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:27.360
many different kinds of cognitive tasks. The less you have,
171
00:15:27.480 --> 00:15:31.360
the more each task feels like climbing up hill and mud.
172
00:15:32.320 --> 00:15:35.759
This was a profound and in a way mysterious revelation.
173
00:15:37.759 --> 00:15:42.919
It suggested that the sprawling diversity of human thought, every quiz,
174
00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:47.559
every puzzle, every problem solved might be drawing from one
175
00:15:47.759 --> 00:15:54.120
central engine. But Spearman's vision was not entirely monolithic. He
176
00:15:54.159 --> 00:15:59.120
acknowledged that G was not the entire story. Alongside this
177
00:15:59.240 --> 00:16:03.720
general factor, he proposed scores of specific factors, which he
178
00:16:03.799 --> 00:16:10.159
called s. If G was the orchestra's conductor, setting the tempo, energy,
179
00:16:10.200 --> 00:16:14.360
and overall quality of the performance, then the S factors
180
00:16:14.440 --> 00:16:19.159
were the individual musicians, one on the violin of verbal skill,
181
00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:23.480
another on the trumpet of spatial ability, another on the
182
00:16:23.559 --> 00:16:28.559
drums of memory. Each specific factor reflected the unique skill
183
00:16:28.720 --> 00:16:33.399
or practice required for a particular type of task. The
184
00:16:33.480 --> 00:16:38.639
early twentieth century embraced the G factor eagerly. The idea
185
00:16:38.679 --> 00:16:43.039
of one central measurable intelligence had a certain elegance, a
186
00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:47.519
comforting clarity. It offered a way to summarize the swirling
187
00:16:47.559 --> 00:16:53.559
complexity of human thought with one single concept. If only
188
00:16:53.600 --> 00:16:57.200
you could measure G, you could in some sense measure
189
00:16:57.240 --> 00:17:02.720
the mind. But while Spearman worked in the abstract realm
190
00:17:02.799 --> 00:17:09.039
of correlations and factors, another story was unfolding elsewhere in Europe.
191
00:17:09.160 --> 00:17:11.960
It was not driven by theory, but by a very
192
00:17:12.079 --> 00:17:16.039
practical concern how to help children in school who were
193
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:22.079
quietly falling behind. In Paris, a different kind of experiment
194
00:17:22.160 --> 00:17:26.119
was about to begin, less concerned with the invisible mathematics
195
00:17:26.119 --> 00:17:30.279
of G and more concerned with the immediate, tangible realities
196
00:17:30.359 --> 00:17:36.759
of a classroom Binet Simon and the tests true intent.
197
00:17:39.480 --> 00:17:42.519
The year is nineteen oh five. In Paris, the scene
198
00:17:42.599 --> 00:17:47.839
shifts from statistical tables and theoretical debates to crowded classrooms
199
00:17:47.880 --> 00:17:54.039
and restless children. Chalk dust floats in the air like
200
00:17:54.119 --> 00:18:00.240
slow moving galaxies. Teachers mark papers under dim light, wondering
201
00:18:00.319 --> 00:18:03.559
how to distinguish a child who is distracted from one
202
00:18:03.559 --> 00:18:09.920
who is genuinely struggling to keep up. Into this urgent,
203
00:18:10.039 --> 00:18:15.279
practical world, step Alfred Bennet and Theodore Simon. Their mission
204
00:18:15.319 --> 00:18:19.160
is not to solve a philosophical puzzle, but to respond
205
00:18:19.160 --> 00:18:22.480
to a very real problem facing the French school system.
206
00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:30.359
How do you identify children who need extra educational support quietly, fairly, systematically,
207
00:18:30.759 --> 00:18:38.079
before the world decides they are simply not capable. Beneian
208
00:18:38.319 --> 00:18:42.279
Simon approached the intelligence with a kind of gentle pragmatism.
209
00:18:43.079 --> 00:18:45.839
They did not start with an elaborate theory about the
210
00:18:45.920 --> 00:18:49.160
nature of the mind. They started with a question that
211
00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:53.920
felt human, grounded and immediate. How can we tell which
212
00:18:54.039 --> 00:18:57.119
children are struggling in a way that requires special help?
213
00:18:58.720 --> 00:19:00.039
How can we do it in a manner that it
214
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:04.880
opens doors instead of closing them. The answer was to
215
00:19:04.920 --> 00:19:10.400
create what would become the first standardized intelligence test. It
216
00:19:10.480 --> 00:19:14.200
is crucial, almost sacred, to remember what they believed they
217
00:19:14.240 --> 00:19:19.400
were building. The original Benet Simon scale was not designed
218
00:19:19.440 --> 00:19:23.799
to label children with fixed destinies. It was never meant
219
00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:29.000
to declare this is your unchangeable capacity. Instead, it was
220
00:19:29.079 --> 00:19:33.279
a diagnostic tool crafted in the spirit of support, a
221
00:19:33.279 --> 00:19:36.680
way of saying you might need something different, something more,
222
00:19:37.240 --> 00:19:44.720
something tailored so that you too can't succeed. Bene believed
223
00:19:44.920 --> 00:19:52.119
intelligence was complex and importantly malleable. For him, the mind
224
00:19:52.279 --> 00:19:54.880
was not a static crystal, but something closer to a
225
00:19:55.000 --> 00:20:02.240
muscle or a garden shapable, trainable capable of The test
226
00:20:02.359 --> 00:20:05.640
was intended as a snapshot of a child's current functioning,
227
00:20:06.480 --> 00:20:13.400
not a telescope showing a fixed future. To compare children's performance,
228
00:20:13.480 --> 00:20:17.720
Benet introduced the notion of a mental age. Tasks on
229
00:20:17.799 --> 00:20:20.640
the tests were arranged roughly by difficulty and by the
230
00:20:20.680 --> 00:20:24.839
typical age at which most children could perform them successfully.
231
00:20:26.720 --> 00:20:31.799
Some tasks were simple, naming objects, following basic instructions, repeating
232
00:20:31.839 --> 00:20:37.359
short sentences. Others grew more demanding, solving puzzles, answering questions
233
00:20:37.400 --> 00:20:43.559
that tested reasoning handling increasingly complex problems. If a ten
234
00:20:43.599 --> 00:20:46.519
year old child could solve the problem typical of most
235
00:20:46.559 --> 00:20:50.160
eight year olds, then that child's mental age might be
236
00:20:50.279 --> 00:20:53.359
marked as eight, not as a verdict, but as a
237
00:20:53.400 --> 00:20:58.279
signal this child is functioning at this moment more like
238
00:20:58.359 --> 00:21:01.319
a typical eight year old than a typical ten year old.
239
00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:07.440
Additional educational support may help bridge that gap. The genius
240
00:21:07.480 --> 00:21:10.920
of the Benet Simon test lay in its practicality and
241
00:21:11.039 --> 00:21:15.400
in its compassion. It offered a systematic way to identify
242
00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:20.119
children who were quietly struggling. It created a standardized frame
243
00:21:20.480 --> 00:21:25.680
for comparison across classrooms and schools. It framed assessment as
244
00:21:25.720 --> 00:21:32.200
a step toward help, not a final judgment. For the
245
00:21:32.240 --> 00:21:36.359
first time, the invisible landscape of students' mental abilities could
246
00:21:36.400 --> 00:21:40.960
be surveyed in a consistent tool. Teachers and administrators now
247
00:21:41.039 --> 00:21:45.759
had more than intuition and anecdote. They had a structured instrument.
248
00:21:47.240 --> 00:21:52.279
But tools, especially powerful ones, rarely stay confined to their
249
00:21:52.319 --> 00:21:58.640
original purpose. Once the Bene Simon Tests crossed borders and oceans,
250
00:21:59.119 --> 00:22:03.720
it would be adopt reinterpreted, and in some cases, transformed
251
00:22:03.759 --> 00:22:09.319
into something its creators never intended. The next chapter in
252
00:22:09.359 --> 00:22:12.680
the story unfolds far from Paris, on the campus of
253
00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:17.960
an American university, where a new transformation would occur, one
254
00:22:17.960 --> 00:22:21.640
that introduced the rich idea of a mental profile into
255
00:22:21.640 --> 00:22:29.240
a single potent number TEMAN and the calculation of destiny IQ.
256
00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:34.640
The Benet Simon test traveled and as ideas do, across
257
00:22:34.759 --> 00:22:38.839
languages and cultures, shedding and gaining meanings as it went.
258
00:22:40.319 --> 00:22:43.240
When it reached the United States, it encountered a fertile
259
00:22:43.359 --> 00:22:50.680
environment for standardization scaling and quantification. It was here, in
260
00:22:50.799 --> 00:22:55.400
nineteen sixteen that Lewis Terman of Stanford University would rework
261
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:58.720
Benet's creation into something that would reshape how the world
262
00:22:58.799 --> 00:23:05.119
thinks about intelligence. Terman's adaptation, known as the Stanford Benet
263
00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:09.200
Intelligence Scale, preserved much of the structure and spirit of
264
00:23:09.200 --> 00:23:12.920
the original test, but introduced a new way of interpreting
265
00:23:13.000 --> 00:23:17.240
the results, one that would crystallize intelligence into a single
266
00:23:17.759 --> 00:23:24.400
defining metric, the intelligence quotient, or IQ. The idea began
267
00:23:24.480 --> 00:23:29.079
with Bennet's notion of mental age. Determann took this concept
268
00:23:29.119 --> 00:23:32.400
and paired it with a child's chronological age to form
269
00:23:32.680 --> 00:23:40.240
a ratio IQ mental age over chronicle age times one hundred.
270
00:23:41.400 --> 00:23:44.039
If a ten year old child performed like a typical
271
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:48.240
ten year old, the ratio was ten over ten, yielding
272
00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:52.920
an IQ of one hundred, a score quickly treated as
273
00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:57.640
the statistical average. If a ten year old performs like
274
00:23:57.720 --> 00:24:02.599
a typical twelve year old, ratio twelve over ten became
275
00:24:02.920 --> 00:24:06.640
one point two, turning into an IQ of one point twenty.
276
00:24:07.880 --> 00:24:13.920
This transformation did something undeniably powerful and undeniably risky. It
277
00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:17.519
took the sprawling variety of a child's performance and condensed
278
00:24:17.559 --> 00:24:22.559
it into a single number one that seemed precise, objective,
279
00:24:22.680 --> 00:24:29.880
and deeply meaningful. One number one score one apparent measure
280
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:35.039
of how smart someone was. In the globe of scientific progress,
281
00:24:35.119 --> 00:24:40.240
that single number was tempting, neatly aligned with emerging ideas.
282
00:24:40.279 --> 00:24:44.759
Like Spearman's G factor, the IQ score was often interpreted
283
00:24:44.799 --> 00:24:49.480
as a measure of someone's underlying innate capacity, a core
284
00:24:49.680 --> 00:24:53.200
mental strength that shaped much of what a person could achieve.
285
00:24:55.440 --> 00:24:58.720
Where Benet had seen a tool for aid, Terman's version
286
00:24:58.839 --> 00:25:03.240
was often wheeled as a two pool for classification. IQ
287
00:25:03.440 --> 00:25:09.680
scores began to influence educational placement perceptions of potential assumptions
288
00:25:09.680 --> 00:25:12.480
about what a person might or might not be capable.
289
00:25:12.559 --> 00:25:18.680
Of the foundations of modern intelligence research laid over just
290
00:25:18.759 --> 00:25:24.519
a few decades came together like this. Galton introduced the
291
00:25:24.599 --> 00:25:31.759
statistical gaze, turning human variation into analyzable data. Gatel formalized
292
00:25:31.799 --> 00:25:37.440
the practice, giving birth to the mental test. Spearman uncovered
293
00:25:37.480 --> 00:25:43.079
g the invisible general factor beneath diverse performances. Benet and
294
00:25:43.279 --> 00:25:46.759
Simon built a practical test to identify children in need
295
00:25:46.799 --> 00:25:52.440
of support demin distilled mental age and comparative performance into
296
00:25:52.559 --> 00:25:58.839
the now famous IQ. By the early twentieth century, intelligence
297
00:25:58.880 --> 00:26:06.160
had been reframed as something measurable, unified, and quantifiable. Society
298
00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:10.559
now had a metric that could sort, rank, and categorize minds.
299
00:26:12.319 --> 00:26:16.200
Entire generations would come to no intelligence as that single
300
00:26:16.319 --> 00:26:20.240
number on a line, a value that supposedly summarized the
301
00:26:20.319 --> 00:26:26.240
vast inner landscape of thought. Yet quietly the mind resisted
302
00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:33.240
this simplification. The lived reality of human experience, creativity, social intuition,
303
00:26:33.519 --> 00:26:40.079
musical sensitivity, bodily grace, practical wisdom never fit comfortably inside
304
00:26:40.079 --> 00:26:46.440
a single category or score. Very soon, new voices would
305
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:50.799
begin to question whether G and IQ told the whole story.
306
00:26:52.279 --> 00:26:55.880
They would ask whether intelligence was truly one diamond or
307
00:26:55.960 --> 00:26:59.400
something more like a cluster of stars, each shining in
308
00:26:59.440 --> 00:27:04.480
its own patch of sky. The clarity of the single
309
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:09.400
score was brilliant, but perhaps too bright. It cast long,
310
00:27:09.519 --> 00:27:14.200
sharp shadows over everything it did not measure. The first
311
00:27:14.200 --> 00:27:19.119
whisperings of intelligence research had given us a foundation, a beginning.
312
00:27:19.839 --> 00:27:25.200
But foundations are not destinies. They are launching points. The
313
00:27:25.240 --> 00:27:28.279
deeper secrets of the mind's architecture were still waiting in
314
00:27:28.319 --> 00:27:35.799
the wings biding their time. If intelligence is a vast ocean,
315
00:27:36.400 --> 00:27:39.240
is it truly possible for one net to catch every
316
00:27:39.319 --> 00:27:45.519
creature swimming in its depths? In the next episode of
317
00:27:45.559 --> 00:27:50.319
the Intelligence Code, the serene dominance of g begins to
318
00:27:50.400 --> 00:27:56.359
fracture under new questions and boulder vision. We meet Lewis Thurston,
319
00:27:57.240 --> 00:28:01.160
who dared to propose that intelligence is not one untowering pillar,
320
00:28:02.240 --> 00:28:06.400
but at least seven primary mental abilities, each standing on
321
00:28:06.480 --> 00:28:11.759
its own. And we encounter Howard Gardner, who stepped even
322
00:28:11.960 --> 00:28:15.640
further into the unknown, suggesting that the mind may hold
323
00:28:15.880 --> 00:28:24.359
multiple intelligences linguistic, musical, spatial, interpersonal, and more, each shaped
324
00:28:24.400 --> 00:28:30.079
by culture contexts. In lived experience, the bright, solitary beam
325
00:28:30.160 --> 00:28:34.200
of general intelligence will pass through new prisms, splitting into
326
00:28:34.200 --> 00:28:39.240
a spectrum of distinct aptitudes. The story will shift from
327
00:28:39.279 --> 00:28:43.960
asking how smart are you to a subtler, more liberating question,
328
00:28:45.559 --> 00:28:50.200
in what ways are you smart? The architecture of the
329
00:28:50.240 --> 00:28:54.440
mind is about to grow richer, more colorful, and far
330
00:28:54.599 --> 00:29:00.400
more mysterious. The single diamond will crack into a cunstant elation,
331
00:29:01.519 --> 00:29:05.000
and the unseen structure of intelligence will reveal that it
332
00:29:05.079 --> 00:29:08.599
is not merely a line or a Ladder, but perhaps
333
00:29:09.000 --> 00:30:00.119
a universe. Ye
