ОБ ЭТОМ ЭПИЗОДЕ
The moment you realize you can’t fix it is the moment fear gets loud. A diagnosis lands, a phone call changes everything, and the plans you counted on suddenly feel useless. We start with that raw, helpless place and follow Mark 5 into two interwoven stories where desperation is not the end of faith, but the beginning of it.
We meet Jairus, a synagogue ruler with a dying twelve-year-old daughter, and an unnamed woman who has suffered bleeding for twelve years. They come from opposite ends of society, yet both end up in the same posture at the same feet.
Then the worst news arrives: Jairus’ daughter has died. That’s where Jesus’ words cut through the panic, “Do not be afraid, only believe,” and we explore what faith looks like when reality is brutal. We also look at Nazareth’s unbelief in Mark 6, where familiarity turns into offense and people miss what they were closest to. If you’re asking whether Jesus can meet you in chronic illness, waiting, fear, or grief, this conversation points to a Savior whose compassion reaches farther than we think.

00:00:04.480 --> 00:00:09.839
Have you ever had a moment where you felt completely helpless?
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:17.280
When someone you love is sick, their life hanging by a thread.
00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:29.519
Or maybe you get a phone call with devastating news, and as the shock fades, a paralyzing fear sinks deep into your bones.
00:00:30.559 --> 00:00:34.479
You realize there's nothing you can do to fix it.
00:00:35.119 --> 00:00:39.520
No control, no plan, no backup.
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.119
Just fear and desperation.
00:00:44.399 --> 00:00:46.240
You try to stay strong.
00:00:46.479 --> 00:00:48.560
You try to hold it together.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:53.759
Maybe you're the one everyone counts on to be the rock in your family.
00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:03.200
But as fear tightens its grip, your strength begins to fail, like a levee ready to break.
00:01:04.159 --> 00:01:12.079
And in that moment, you have no choice but to let go because it's too much to handle.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:14.319
And you are never really in control.
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:19.599
All you can do now is cry out for help.
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:24.879
Desperation has a way of getting our attention.
00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:28.159
It cuts through the illusion of control.
00:01:28.799 --> 00:01:35.519
And it doesn't care about your background, your bank account, or your spiritual maturity.
00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:46.159
But in that cry for help is something beautiful, an opportunity to see the Lord at work in your life.
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:53.200
That moment of helplessness may very well be the place where Jesus meets you.
00:01:53.760 --> 00:02:00.159
In fact, it's in our weakness that his power is on full display.
00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:10.479
In our passage today, we meet two very different people who encounter Jesus in shared moments of helplessness.
00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:17.120
One is a broken, bleeding woman who's been suffering for twelve years.
00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:25.039
The other is a desperate synagogue ruler whose twelve-year-old daughter is on the brink of death.
00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:33.360
One is unclean and untouchable, and the other is prominent and respected.
00:02:34.159 --> 00:02:38.080
But both fall at the feet of Jesus.
00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:44.400
So let's take a closer look at their stories by turning to Mark chapter 5.
00:02:44.719 --> 00:02:46.960
We will start with verse 21.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:51.599
But before we begin, let's go before the Lord in prayer.
00:02:54.719 --> 00:03:03.039
Father in heaven, even through the darkest of valleys, you are there with us.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:18.400
And God, as we turn to your word this morning, we pray that we be reminded of that truth that you are with us, and that we can turn to you in our greatest times of need.
00:03:19.599 --> 00:03:26.879
So would you help us to receive your word today and to increase in faith in Jesus' name?
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:27.759
Amen.
00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:33.520
Mark chapter 5, starting with verse 21.
00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:43.120
And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and so he stayed by the seashore.
00:03:43.360 --> 00:03:56.879
And one of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came up, and on seeing him fell at his feet and pleaded with him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death.
00:03:57.199 --> 00:04:04.960
Please come, that by coming you may lay your hands on her so that she will be saved and live.
00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:12.159
And he went off with him, and a large crowd was following him and pressing in on him.
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:18.480
Here we have a father in a desperate situation.
00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:22.720
His little girl is moments away from death.
00:04:22.959 --> 00:04:29.199
It would appear that all hope is lost and nothing can be done for this little girl.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:32.800
This is a nightmare scenario for any parent.
00:04:33.279 --> 00:04:43.120
And for those of you who have children, you might even understand the burden that comes from having a sick child and not being able to do anything about it.
00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:51.360
Verse 22 tells us that this father also happens to be a synagogue official named Jairus.
00:04:52.240 --> 00:04:58.240
Here we finally have a religious leader who is not being hostile towards Jesus.
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:02.000
That shows how desperate he must be.
00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:08.800
Every religious leader we've seen so far has been offended by Jesus, but not this one.
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:17.199
Jairus is at the feet of Jesus, crying out for mercy on behalf of his daughter.
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:22.800
As we see here, faith begins at the feet of Jesus.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:30.240
Jesus had already performed hundreds, maybe even thousands, of miracles at this point.
00:05:30.720 --> 00:05:38.720
And among such miracles include a leper who is made clean again, and a paralytic who is able to walk.
00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:48.240
Word might have even gotten out that Jesus calmed a deadly storm and casted out a legion of demons out of one man.
00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:56.800
If anyone could heal this little girl and save her from dying, surely it was Jesus.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:04.160
When crisis strips away the illusion of control, faith clings to Christ.
00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:09.279
Jairus goes to Jesus as his only hope.
00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:16.959
He believes that all it would take is the healing hands of Jesus to make her well again.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:21.439
All eyes are on Jesus.
00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:32.000
He barely stepped off the boat after coming back from the previous episode, and he already has a large crowd gathered around him.
00:06:32.720 --> 00:06:40.160
Based on what the text gives us, we're not even sure if Jesus intended to teach them or perform miracles.
00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:46.079
But Jairus has secured his full attention and become his main priority.
00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:54.480
The sense of urgency continues as Jesus agrees to go with Jairus to see the little girl.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:02.560
As Jesus makes his way through the crowd, verse 24 says that the crowd was following Jesus and pressing in on him.
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:15.040
If you've ever been to a concert, you can imagine what it would be like for the performer to suddenly step off of the stage and into the crowd in the middle of a concert.
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.160
People would do whatever it took to get close.
00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:25.920
And this would mean this would make navigating through the crowd pretty difficult.
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:35.680
We're not sure how far Jesus needs to go to reach Jairus' daughter, but the crowd of people didn't make it easy.
00:07:36.399 --> 00:07:44.879
The clock continues to tick as each passing moment draws this twelve-year-old girl closer to death.
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:48.000
Every second counts.
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.439
Continuing with verse 25.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:08:06.079
And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse.
00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:12.240
After hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind him and touched his garment.
00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:18.240
For she was saying, If I just touch his garments, I will be saved from this.
00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:28.079
And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her affliction.
00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:40.480
And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power proceeding from him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and was saying, Who touched my garments?
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:47.279
And his disciples were saying to him, You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you say, Who touched me?
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:51.519
And he was looking around to see the woman who had done this.
00:08:51.759 --> 00:09:03.919
But the woman, fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
00:09:04.879 --> 00:09:09.519
And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has saved you.
00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:14.080
Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.
00:09:16.399 --> 00:09:20.480
Jesus is already on a mission to save this little girl.
00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:25.440
The stakes are incredibly high as she is on the brink of death.
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:30.399
The last thing that was needed at this moment was an interruption.
00:09:30.639 --> 00:09:32.879
And that's exactly what happens.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:41.360
You can imagine how it must have felt for Jairus to wait for Jesus as this whole exchange unfolds with this woman.
00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:45.759
Sometimes Jesus makes us wait for our miracle.
00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:49.039
The whole thing is strange.
00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:55.440
Our gospel writer Mark is in the middle of a story and introduces a story within a story.
00:09:56.000 --> 00:10:00.960
We immediately learn that this anonymous woman had a hemorrhage for twelve years.
00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:11.360
While many have interpreted this to mean that it had something to do with menstrual bleeding, the text seems to point to a chronic condition of internal bleeding.
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:16.799
We can speculate that it could have even been something like a tumor or other disease.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:22.240
Either way, her condition would have made her ceremonially unclean.
00:10:23.039 --> 00:10:28.399
She might have even been shunned by society, including her own friends and family.
00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:37.519
As you can imagine, anyone with her condition would have sought whatever it took to make her well again.
00:10:38.720 --> 00:10:43.039
She had been desperately seeking help for 12 years.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:57.759
Verse 26 even says that she endured much at the hands of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse.
00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:10.799
Can you imagine spending all the money you had on medical care, suffering through painful treatment after painful treatment, just to get worse?
00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:14.720
All the physicians failed her.
00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:20.960
Surely there had to be another physician greater than they who could actually help her.
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:28.320
And so she goes to the one person who could do such a thing, Jesus.
00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:33.919
This woman knew that it would be difficult to book an appointment with him.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:41.919
So she reasons that if she can just manage to get close enough to touch his garments, she would be healed.
00:11:42.639 --> 00:11:47.039
As someone who is unclean, it would be considered unlawful to touch him.
00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:49.840
She's scared to make a move and do it.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:57.759
But after twelve years of shame, sickness, and isolation, this is her only hope.
00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:02.000
She pushes through the crowd and goes for it.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:07.519
Faith reaches through fear, even when it's trembling.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:09.600
Verse 29.
00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:17.679
And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her affliction.
00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:19.840
It worked.
00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:22.240
She knew it immediately.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:25.279
But something else happened that she didn't expect.
00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:11.200
Once again, all eyes were on Jesus.
00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:13.679
What is he gonna say to her?
00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:15.840
What's gonna happen next?
00:13:16.159 --> 00:13:17.440
Verse 34.
00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:22.639
And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has saved you.
00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:27.039
Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.
00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:32.480
Jesus is full of compassion and mercy.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:37.200
He recognizes her genuine faith and calls her daughter.
00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:39.440
This is incredible.
00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:47.279
This is the only recorded instance in all four Gospels where Jesus directly addresses a woman as daughter.
00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:54.480
When he says your faith has saved you, it can also be translated as your faith has made you whole.
00:13:55.279 --> 00:13:59.279
The same word in the Greek also has implications for salvation.
00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:04.559
Her faith in Jesus also led to her spiritual salvation.
00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:10.879
Jesus isn't just a healer, he restores the whole person.
00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:17.120
He welcomes those who reach for him in faith, even through fear.
00:14:17.679 --> 00:14:24.399
As we see here, the woman is not just healed physically, she's made whole completely.
00:14:25.440 --> 00:14:28.720
And as a daughter, she has a new identity.
00:14:28.960 --> 00:14:32.320
She is now part of the family of Jesus.
00:14:32.879 --> 00:14:36.879
She is no longer an outsider, but a true insider.
00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:44.639
Jesus acknowledges her actions as a reflection of her faith, and it has made her well.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:49.279
She is recognized as a true disciple.
00:14:49.840 --> 00:15:00.559
Not only is she praised for her faith and called daughter, but she also serves as an example of how disciples follow in the way of their master.
00:15:01.600 --> 00:15:09.440
It's worth noting that even as she approached Jesus to be healed, the text says that she came up in the crowd behind him.
00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:19.200
Even the spatial location of this woman is symbolic of her following Jesus as a true disciple.
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:26.799
This woman can uniquely relate with Jesus when considering what he would eventually endure on the cross.
00:15:27.039 --> 00:15:32.159
She lived through suffering, affliction, and the shedding of blood.
00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:36.960
The same can't be said of many other disciples of Jesus.
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:40.480
She is unique and worth recognizing.
00:15:40.639 --> 00:15:50.559
And not because of anything that's special about her, but because of her faith and experience that translates to being a true disciple.
00:15:51.600 --> 00:15:57.759
Though she was greatly afraid in the moment that she reached for Jesus, she did so in faith.
00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:00.960
And Jesus tells her to go in peace.
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:04.399
She has nothing to be afraid about.
00:16:05.440 --> 00:16:13.919
And Jesus calls his disciples to demonstrate faith that is fearless, a reflection of complete trust in him.
00:16:16.080 --> 00:16:23.279
The faith of a true disciple is a powerful kind of faith, one that brings healing and wholeness.
00:16:23.919 --> 00:16:28.960
True disciples persist in faith even through terminal illness.
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:35.200
As one daughter is healed, we wait to see what happens to the other.
00:16:35.840 --> 00:16:38.080
Continuing with verse 35.
00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:46.320
While he was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official saying, Your daughter has died.
00:16:46.559 --> 00:16:48.960
Why trouble the teacher anymore?
00:16:49.440 --> 00:16:58.960
But Jesus, overhearing what had been spoken, said to the synagogue official, Do not be afraid, only believe.
00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:02.720
It doesn't look good.
00:17:03.200 --> 00:17:05.279
The little girl is dead.
00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:08.160
Hope already seems to be lost.
00:17:08.640 --> 00:17:11.920
Gyrus is being advised to send Jesus away.
00:17:12.079 --> 00:17:13.680
It's too late.
00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:16.880
At least that's the advice that Gyrus was given.
00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:21.039
And sometimes that's the advice that we get too.
00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:24.079
There's no point in continuing the pregnancy.
00:17:24.240 --> 00:17:25.839
The baby won't make it.
00:17:26.160 --> 00:17:30.319
We can try treatment, but you only have about a month to live.
00:17:30.640 --> 00:17:35.039
This condition is something you'll have to live with for the rest of your life.
00:17:37.839 --> 00:17:44.319
In the case of Jairus' daughter, you can understand why people would assume that nothing could be done.
00:17:44.640 --> 00:17:46.720
After all, she's dead.
00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:49.359
Dead people don't come back to life.
00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:51.119
Seems reasonable.
00:17:51.599 --> 00:17:54.319
But Jesus has something to say about it too.
00:17:54.640 --> 00:17:58.160
He came there for a reason and will not be turned away.
00:17:58.559 --> 00:18:06.640
Despite all that was being spoken, Jesus urges Jairus to not be afraid, only believe.
00:18:09.359 --> 00:18:09.759
C.S.
00:18:09.920 --> 00:18:16.799
Lewis once wrote, Those who believe in miracles are not denying that there is such a norm or rule.
00:18:17.039 --> 00:18:19.519
They are only saying that it can be suspended.
00:18:19.759 --> 00:18:23.359
A miracle is, by definition, an exception.
00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:27.200
Dead people don't come back to life.
00:18:27.519 --> 00:18:30.960
At least that wasn't the human experience up to that point.
00:18:31.599 --> 00:18:36.240
But there are exceptions, and we even see it in the Old Testament.
00:18:36.880 --> 00:18:42.000
The prophet Elisha raised the son of a widow back to life again.
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:47.759
Later, the prophet Elisha raised the son of a Shunammite woman back to life again.
00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:58.240
There is even a case where a dead body was raised back to life again at a funeral after coming into contact with the bones of Elisha.
00:18:59.200 --> 00:19:11.920
This certainly was not the norm, but there is at least some kind of precedent, especially among those who are recognized as coming in the power of God as Elijah and Elisha did.
00:19:13.119 --> 00:19:17.039
Jairus had already come to Jesus for a miracle.
00:19:17.519 --> 00:19:26.559
While he expected that miracle to be that his daughter would not die, Jesus intended something different, an even greater miracle.
00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:29.759
He was about to do something incredible.
00:19:30.079 --> 00:19:34.319
If only Jairus would trust him and believe.
00:21:33.599 --> 00:21:34.240
Amen.
00:21:36.480 --> 00:21:42.160
Despite all opposition, this story did not end in death.
00:21:43.759 --> 00:21:59.759
Jesus healed diseases, made a paralytic walk, casted out legions of demons, caused even the winds and the seas to obey him, and now raised the dead back to life again.
00:22:00.640 --> 00:22:02.160
Who is this man?
00:22:02.400 --> 00:22:03.279
Jesus.
00:22:04.720 --> 00:22:15.279
You can imagine the pressure Jairus felt as he disregarded all the advice that he received to accept his daughter's faith, his fate.
00:22:15.599 --> 00:22:18.880
And yet he still persisted in faith.
00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:29.039
Jairus is another model example of a true disciple, one who demonstrates a powerful kind of faith.
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:34.960
His faith in Jesus led to his daughter being raised from the dead.
00:22:35.599 --> 00:22:43.200
As we see here, true disciples persist in faith, even in the face of death.
00:22:55.759 --> 00:23:07.440
Sometimes, and this is uncomfortable to acknowledge, but sometimes God's will is for a person to endure suffering and not be healed.
00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:10.079
At least not in this life.
00:23:11.440 --> 00:23:21.680
It is spiritually dangerous and emotionally damaging to assert that a person didn't get better because they just didn't have enough faith.
00:23:23.519 --> 00:23:32.480
Rather, the focus on this passage is that we should not be like those who assumed that the miracle could not be done.
00:23:33.359 --> 00:23:38.960
We are to be like Jairus, who trusted the outcome to Jesus.
00:23:39.680 --> 00:23:46.000
He didn't give up just because he didn't initially receive what he expected.
00:23:46.880 --> 00:23:56.480
He persisted in faith, having assurance and confidence in the outcome, despite not having the ability to see it in the moment.
00:24:03.759 --> 00:24:06.880
He had to wait for his miracle.
00:24:08.079 --> 00:24:14.960
He didn't even blame Jesus stopping to heal the bleeding woman while his own daughter died in the process.
00:24:16.400 --> 00:24:24.240
He persisted in faith, setting out with Jesus even after receiving the news that his daughter was dead.
00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:43.680
Many people today, even people in the church, have grown so used to the ordinary, the explainable, the predictable, that we start to functionally believe that God can't or won't break in with healing, power, and resurrection.
00:24:44.559 --> 00:24:45.279
But C.S.
00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:47.039
Lewis pushed back on that.
00:24:47.279 --> 00:25:04.240
He said that just as the sighting of one black swan disproves the idea that all swans must be white, so one true miracle, one undeniable act of divine intervention shatters the illusion that the natural world is all there is.
00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:09.440
That's exactly what Jesus does here in this passage.
00:25:09.759 --> 00:25:14.079
He breaks into a world ruled by sickness and death.
00:25:14.400 --> 00:25:20.880
And with a word, with a touch, he undoes what no human effort could fix.
00:25:21.839 --> 00:25:34.799
These aren't just interruptions of nature, they're previews of the world to come, glimpses of the kingdom breaking in, black swans in a world full of white.
00:25:35.519 --> 00:25:42.880
To further develop the analogy, we shouldn't come to expect every swan to be a black swan now that we've seen one.
00:25:43.119 --> 00:25:47.440
It wouldn't be an exception if the exception became the rule.
00:25:47.680 --> 00:25:53.039
But the very existence of an exception should cause us to welcome such a thing.
00:25:53.759 --> 00:25:59.839
In other words, do you expect or welcome miracles in your life?
00:26:00.640 --> 00:26:08.960
If you receive the diagnosis of a terminal illness, do you automatically expect not to get better and be healed?
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:23.519
If there's anything I hope you can take away from this passage today, it's that no crisis, no chronic illness, not even death, lies beyond the compassionate power of Jesus.
00:26:24.559 --> 00:26:28.400
His call to us in every trial is the same.
00:26:29.039 --> 00:26:30.240
Do not believe.
00:26:30.720 --> 00:26:34.079
Sorry, do not be afraid, only believe.
00:26:35.680 --> 00:26:40.319
Faith doesn't deny reality, it trusts Jesus in it.
00:26:41.039 --> 00:26:46.799
Let's see what happens to those who don't believe in chapter six, starting in verse one.
00:26:48.400 --> 00:26:54.240
And Jesus went out from there and came into his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
00:26:54.480 --> 00:26:58.799
And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue.
00:26:59.039 --> 00:27:04.160
And many listeners were astonished, saying, Where did this man get these things?
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:10.160
And what is this wisdom given to this man, and such miracles as these performed by his hands?
00:27:10.480 --> 00:27:17.839
Is this man not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
00:27:18.240 --> 00:27:20.400
Are not his sisters here with us?
00:27:20.799 --> 00:27:23.359
And they were taking offense at him.
00:27:23.920 --> 00:27:35.039
And Jesus was saying to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown, and among his own relatives, and in his own household.
00:27:35.920 --> 00:27:49.119
And he could do no miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them, and he was marveling at their unbelief, and he was going around the villages teaching.
00:27:51.279 --> 00:27:59.920
It appears that Jesus has finally met his match, the kryptonite to his miracles, a tough crowd in his hometown.
00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:05.680
They essentially mocked Jesus, treating him like he was just some average Joe.
00:28:06.079 --> 00:28:07.599
Oh, yeah, we remember you.
00:28:07.759 --> 00:28:10.240
You're Mary's son, the carpenter, right?
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:18.000
The people of Nazareth still thought of him as one who carried on his father's trade as a craftsman.
00:28:18.319 --> 00:28:23.680
This was a common job, not held with much esteem, but functional to society.
00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:26.400
They didn't respect Jesus.
00:28:26.720 --> 00:28:31.039
It also shows up in the way they refer to him as the son of Mary.
00:28:31.680 --> 00:28:35.839
This is the only place in Scripture where Jesus is called this.
00:28:36.400 --> 00:28:42.559
The normal Jewish practice was to identify someone as a son by their father's name.
00:28:43.039 --> 00:28:55.839
Some commentators speculate that they referred to Jesus in this way because Joseph was either already dead, or maybe it's because they were thinking about some rumors about Jesus' illegitimate birth.
00:28:57.039 --> 00:29:01.759
A man was called the son of his mother if his father was unknown.
00:29:02.079 --> 00:29:06.640
So this would indicate that they intended to insult Jesus.
00:29:07.599 --> 00:29:10.799
Verse 3 even says that they took offense at him.
00:29:11.920 --> 00:29:16.000
The people of Nazareth were rejecting Jesus in every which way.
00:29:16.559 --> 00:29:27.440
This causes Jesus to say in verse 4, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown, and among his own relatives, and in his own household.
00:29:28.319 --> 00:29:32.799
They knew Jesus by name, but not by faith.
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:42.319
This lack of recognition of who Jesus really is marks these bystanders as being outsiders without faith.
00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:45.599
Their offense becomes a wall.
00:29:46.079 --> 00:29:49.039
They resist Jesus in every way.
00:29:49.920 --> 00:29:55.680
All Jesus can do is marvel at their unbelief and hardness of heart.
00:29:56.480 --> 00:30:03.039
He couldn't do a mighty work there, not because he lacked power, but because they lacked faith.
00:30:04.160 --> 00:30:13.039
John Calvin observes that unbelievers, as far as lies in their power, bind up the hands of God by their obstinacy.
00:30:13.279 --> 00:30:20.880
Not that God is overcome as if he were an inferior, but because they do not permit him to display his power.
00:30:22.079 --> 00:30:32.799
You can grow up around Jesus and still miss him, because familiarity isn't faith, and unbelief still closes doors.
00:30:33.599 --> 00:30:40.880
If you grew up in the church or have attended church most of your life, you are not immune from unbelief.
00:30:41.440 --> 00:30:51.920
You are still called daily to trust in him, to believe that he can and will work miraculously in your life and for his church.
00:30:58.000 --> 00:31:01.519
We should learn from the people who reject Jesus in Nazareth.
00:31:01.920 --> 00:31:10.160
Unbelief is a serious obstacle to the experience of Jesus' power and the extension of his kingdom.
00:31:11.359 --> 00:31:13.519
But God is sovereign.
00:31:13.759 --> 00:31:21.359
And we see that in verse 5, as Jesus still manages to lay hands on a few sick people and heal them.
00:31:22.160 --> 00:31:26.640
Nothing can ultimately stop the will and power of God.
00:31:27.680 --> 00:31:33.519
Jesus still accomplishes his mission, even if resistance brings casualties.
00:31:33.759 --> 00:31:37.839
The casualties in this case are lost opportunities.
00:31:38.559 --> 00:31:45.839
The mission of God moves forward, but faith is the doorway to experience it firsthand.
00:31:49.440 --> 00:31:53.119
We all face times of feeling helpless.
00:31:53.680 --> 00:31:59.200
And whether we like it or not, we will find ourselves in desperate situations.
00:32:00.319 --> 00:32:07.200
It's a common human experience, especially in a world broken by sin.
00:32:08.559 --> 00:32:15.680
Not if, but when we find ourselves in those moments, how will we respond?
00:32:17.039 --> 00:32:20.640
Will we reach for Jesus in a cry for help?
00:32:21.200 --> 00:32:24.880
Or will we accept our fate in despair?
00:32:26.319 --> 00:32:34.400
It's easy to say what we might do when we're sitting in an air-conditioned room at a church surrounded by Christians.
00:32:34.960 --> 00:32:45.599
A lot of us know what we're supposed to say when we talk about our trials as we go through them, but that doesn't indicate genuine faith.
00:32:46.559 --> 00:32:50.319
What kind of heart do you bring to Jesus?
00:32:51.279 --> 00:32:57.200
He doesn't require perfect faith, but he does expect genuine faith.
00:33:00.799 --> 00:33:03.519
Do we trust him for the miracle?
00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:09.759
If we trust him for the little things, we'll learn to trust him for the big things.
00:33:10.559 --> 00:33:26.400
But if we don't even trust him for the little things, and I'm talking about our finances, our jobs, our homes and cars, how will we ever learn how to trust him for matters that have to do with life and death?
00:33:28.400 --> 00:33:32.640
God has shown us again and again what he can do.
00:33:33.200 --> 00:33:42.880
Since he is unchanging, the same yesterday, today, and forever, we should expect that he will do it again.
00:33:43.680 --> 00:33:51.599
Jesus' care and power over disease and death call his disciples to fearless faith.
00:33:52.000 --> 00:33:57.599
Because faith fuels his kingdom mission and unbelief hinders it.
00:33:58.480 --> 00:34:01.599
True disciples persist in faith.
00:34:02.160 --> 00:34:05.519
So in your desperation, believe.
00:34:06.319 --> 00:34:09.119
In your waiting, believe.
00:34:09.840 --> 00:34:12.719
In your weakness, believe.
00:34:13.519 --> 00:34:18.559
And when fear threatens to take hold, remember his words to Jairus.
00:34:19.039 --> 00:34:22.719
Do not be afraid, only believe.
00:34:22.960 --> 00:34:24.320
Let's pray.
00:34:28.639 --> 00:34:34.639
Oh Father, we pray for your help.
00:34:36.159 --> 00:34:40.079
We are so quick to forget all that you have done and who you are.
00:34:41.599 --> 00:34:47.199
God, would you forgive us for ever doubting you, forever wavering in our faith?
00:34:49.039 --> 00:34:53.840
Many of us right now in this room are going through some type of trial.
00:34:55.840 --> 00:35:00.800
It'd be tempting to doubt your goodness in it.
00:35:02.239 --> 00:35:08.239
It's tempting to doubt that you will actually intervene and make it better.
00:35:09.039 --> 00:35:12.800
And God, whatever better looks like is up to you.
00:35:13.440 --> 00:35:19.119
And we can trust the outcome to you because you are worthy of our trust.
00:35:20.079 --> 00:35:22.880
So, God, would you increase our faith?
00:35:23.599 --> 00:35:30.320
Would you remind us in times of helplessness that we can always turn to you?
00:35:30.559 --> 00:35:33.199
And that should be our first option.
00:35:35.280 --> 00:35:37.920
We pray for your help in Jesus' name.
00:35:38.239 --> 00:35:38.880
Amen.
