Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver Michael Bumpus. Play fake, go to roll right, dumps it off into the right flask to Michael Bumpers, who bounces off a one tackler gets to him side the forty down of the thirty five yard line.
00:00:13
Speaker 2: Powered by Seahawks dot Com.
00:00:15
Speaker 1: Matt pumpfake's looking at the gold line. He throws it into the end zone. Touchdown, Say Hawks, it's Michael Bumpers with a diving catching the end zone. A ten yard touchdown reception for Bumpers, and the kid out of Washington State has found himself a place on this team.
00:00:31
Speaker 2: Now here's your host, Nasa Choviie.
00:00:35
Speaker 3: Welcome into another edition of Hawk Talk. The Seahawks getting ready to take on the New England Patriots down there in Foxborough, coming off an electric win at Lumenfield over the Denver Broncos in week one.
00:00:47
Speaker 1: Bump it was fun. I missed you. I missed you earlier. This week, I do by myself.
00:00:51
Speaker 4: How was that? How was that?
00:00:53
Speaker 1: It was awkward? I did not like it.
00:00:54
Speaker 4: You just talked a lot.
00:00:55
Speaker 1: I talked the entire time. How was in this room? By myself? Trying to look at the camera, trying to look up and down.
00:01:00
Speaker 3: I'm sure it was fired though, I mean, I hope, so listeners, let me know, be nice. You know, I try to do the wait for both of us. But you know what, I got you back today. Let's get it awful win too, baby. This team is flying high. It should be really fun. Let's get into these New England Patriots.
00:01:15
Speaker 1: What's on tap? What's on tap? Big win in the week one. But I'm not gonna lie to you.
00:01:24
Speaker 3: When I saw everything that's happened in New England this offseason, you know, obviously similar. I guess people could think about the Seahawks, right, do you move on from an legendary coach, one of the best to ever do in Bill Belichick drawed Mayo steps up as a new head coach. Tom Brady's gone, been gone. They move on from Daniel Jones. But boy did they come out and play some good football against these Bengals.
00:01:43
Speaker 4: Man, Man, they look good. I was surprised.
00:01:46
Speaker 5: I saw the score, and I thought Joe Burrow in the squad, what was going to tear them up?
00:01:49
Speaker 4: But nah, it was a different story.
00:01:51
Speaker 3: No. I definitely had a lost down when I was looking at the schedule beforehand, but they beat the Bengals on the road sixteen to ten. Kicking off, Like I said, the drawd Mayo era, they were a seven and a half point underdogs. Not that we're into the gambling side of things, but ESPN Stassin Info says that's the biggest upsets in twenty eighteen in Week one.
00:02:09
Speaker 1: So that was pretty crazy. So let's jump into that game.
00:02:12
Speaker 3: You got Jacoby Brissette right bump, so he wins the starting job over Drake May and I don't know if it's one because I don't know if it was a real competition. I think they wanted Bersett to come in there and be the veteran guy and let Drake May learn behind, you know, a not veteran offensive line that's a little younger, it could be a little banged.
00:02:28
Speaker 1: Up, but he came out there and got the job done.
00:02:30
Speaker 3: He went fifteen to twenty four, one hundred and twenty four yards, no touchdowns, but did not turn the ball over. Also carried the ball seven times for thirty two yards. But the big help to the Patriots offense, it's gonna be Ormandre Stevenson.
00:02:43
Speaker 1: Man.
00:02:43
Speaker 4: That boy runs hard. He looked good, man, he looked good.
00:02:46
Speaker 3: I mean one hundred twenty yards on twenty five carries, one touchdown and Jen Mueller shout out to jam Mueller. She had a stat earlier that he had about one hundred and I think it was one hundred and fifteen or so yards after contact, Like, excuse me, I'm sorry what There was.
00:02:59
Speaker 5: A play he made in the backfield. It was his zone left. As soon as he gets the football, the end is already crashed down. He spins off of them, has a defender in front of him, shakes him, and then picks up seven eight yards.
00:03:09
Speaker 4: I go, yeah, this man's healthy. He's really he's ready to go.
00:03:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, we're gonna get into him when we get into man up. But he had a big day and he really helped this offense go out and the Bengals, I'm not gonna lie there, simply bad on offense in the first half, couldn't get anything going, and for most of the second half, Cincinnati went three and out on his first three possessions, and Joe Burrow eventually moved the Bengals into the red zone in the second quarter, but came away with nothing. They turned the ball over there in the red zone. Second half, Cincinnati's Charlie Jones fumbled away at punt, which led to a Patriots field goal, and the Bengals came up a yard short on fourth down and turned the ball over on downs. Cincinnati finally got into the end zone near the end of the third quarter on a Zach Muff's five yard run. Evan McPherson's fifty one yard field goal cut the New England's lead sixteen to ten, and that's where it would stay. Bengals get the ball back with two fifty six left and don't get the first down, elected to punt. Stevenson then runs out the clock with two first downs and they get the job done. Jamar Chase ended up playing. There's a big hubove about if he was gonna go or not. He did play, didn't really do much.
00:04:06
Speaker 5: Should have been a practice, Yeah, yeah, he should have been a practic.
00:04:10
Speaker 4: I'm just playing. Jamal may get your money. I'm just playing.
00:04:12
Speaker 3: Six receptions sixty two yards. And then Keon White, We're gonna talk about him a lot. He brought the pressure defensively, two and a half sacks, three QB hits. Most people thought these Patriots would not be a great football team, Bump, But yeah, had your boy reconsidering.
00:04:27
Speaker 5: It's when everything's new, right, you don't know what you're gonna get in week one. I tell you it will allow to you. It'll tell you some truth. So you're trying, you're trying to take what's real and what's not. But what is real is that you knew that when Mayo was was hired he was gonna keep some of that Belichick. We'll bring in some of that new and I think that's what we're seeing, that's where we're feeling. But he's gone. He might face some adversity this week, so I count on it.
00:04:50
Speaker 3: We'll just let's get in the head head, Bump, what do you see out of I know they head to head.
00:04:55
Speaker 1: This is a big part of our feature. We like to look how the team stack up.
00:04:58
Speaker 3: It's really hard after week one, so oh and week go through this that we know it's only been one week, but it's still important. Kind of shows what happened last week. So, Bump, what stands out to you?
00:05:06
Speaker 1: Now?
00:05:06
Speaker 5: I'm gonna start on defense because it's a top ten defense in the league right now. Hey, hey, after week one, I'm sorry, Top ten defense in the league right now, six overall, giving up tw hundred and thirty one yards a game.
00:05:15
Speaker 4: One game I'm talking about.
00:05:16
Speaker 5: The Seahawks gave up ninety nine yards in the run last week, won thirty three through the air, and allow twenty points. The Patriots defense top five defense of the league after one week, gave up two hundred and twenty four yards seventy on the ground, one fifty four through the air, and gave up ten points. That's gonna be tough again. They'll be tested this week. Let's go to the offensive side. The Seahawks three hundred and four yards overall, one forty six on the ground, one to fifty eight pass, and I expect that number to go up a little bit when you make some adjustments. The Patriots two to ninety overall or two ninety average last week had two hundred ninety yards nineteenth overall, one hundred and seventy on the ground. That's gonna be a big one, one twenty through the air, and gave up sixteen points.
00:05:58
Speaker 4: We do this, we gotta do it every week.
00:06:00
Speaker 5: Right around Week four, I think is when it's like, Okay, we have a clear picture of who this team is but watching both teams, I can say that defensively the Hawks are so much better than they were last year. And defensively the Pages are a dang good team too. They're disciplined, they run around, they tackle. It should be good. The numbers are gonna change throughout the throughout the few weeks, but both these teams are good defensively.
00:06:22
Speaker 3: You had no question about it between Drod Mayo and Mike McDonald, both first time head coaches, and their defenses look like they looked the part. Everything I've heard anyone talking about Gerard when he was a player, he was that dude.
00:06:34
Speaker 1: Knew every alignment, knewhere everyone was supposed to line up.
00:06:37
Speaker 3: Every single call, he was getting other people lined up, calling out what the offense was doing. So it's not a surprise that he has the defensive side of the ball.
00:06:43
Speaker 5: Said, he's Robert Kraft stepson. That's how tity was with the organization, you know. So he's in there.
00:06:48
Speaker 3: Yes, he is in there, and his defense is looking good. But as we do every week, I like to know the history, what happened the last time these two teams played.
00:06:55
Speaker 1: Let's know the history. No, your history.
00:06:59
Speaker 3: Seahawks lead the all time series between the two teams ten to nine in the regular season, zero to one in the postseason, But who cares about that one. It's gonna blow past that one. Hawks have won three of the last regular season meetings. The last meeting bump came down to a thriller at lumen Field in twenty twenty Soup take everyone behind.
00:07:19
Speaker 1: The curtain a little bit. It was weird.
00:07:21
Speaker 3: It was a weird time because there was no fans and I mean we were among what one hundred people in the building other than teams.
00:07:28
Speaker 1: Uh huh.
00:07:28
Speaker 4: We had a nice suite in the corner.
00:07:30
Speaker 5: This is the one time we could actually react to what's going on because typically you're in the box with Raves and Wineman. I'm in the press boxing and you're not supposed to react. It's supposed to be professional. All We was acting a food that year because we're in a suite all by ourselves, we were fans. We could hear the players right cheering and celebrating, so so it was it was a weird setting. But we were also one of the lucky ones to still see this game live.
00:07:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was it was eerie feeling.
00:07:55
Speaker 3: Then that entire COVID season, but man lots changed since then for real. But during that game it was a shootout, back and forth. Nine drives ended up in touchdowns for both teams. Things started off pretty brutal though for the Seahawks. Russell Wilson, looking for his boy greg Olsen, right through his hands, picked off I.
00:08:12
Speaker 1: Devin mccordy ran back forty three yard touchdown.
00:08:15
Speaker 3: Hawks would answer right back with a thirteen play seventy five yard drive, ending with a four yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett. And this just went back and forth. Ain't nobody was getting no stops. Cam Newton was leading the Patriots. He came back nine plays, seventy nine yard drive, took him all the way down to the one yard line. And this what the game came down to. Thirty five thirty Seahawks leading balls at the one yard line and they need to keep him out of the end zone. And on the last play of the game, Cam Newton, mind you, was balling out that game. They already rushed for a couple of touchdowns. Takes a ball off left tackle and gets stopped at the goal line by none other than LJ.
00:08:50
Speaker 1: Collier.
00:08:50
Speaker 4: TCU stand up, Yes, TCU.
00:08:53
Speaker 3: Now definitely his best moment as a Seattle Seahawk. You know, LJ is super nice dude. I love my interactions with him. It didn't work out for him in Seattle, obviously, but that was a huge time play won the game. Actually, I don't know if you know this bump when you're walking from the press box to the broadcast booth.
00:09:08
Speaker 1: It's one of the photos on the wall.
00:09:10
Speaker 4: Oh is it?
00:09:10
Speaker 1: Look at it. Next time you'll see it. LJ lives, LJ lives on forever.
00:09:14
Speaker 3: Huge play, Seahawks win, and like I said, that was the last time Cam Newton was really playing at that level. He finished that day with three hundred ninety seven pass yards, which is the third most he'd ever thrown four in his career thirty forty four to four. Oh my goodness, sorry, I messed up. Three hundred ninety seven yards, one touchdown, one pick. He also had forty seven yards on eleven carries and two touchdowns. And this was also during the Russ Cook phase. Wherever you want to call it. He was twenty one to twenty. It was called, you know, let Russ Cook.
00:09:41
Speaker 4: That was the era.
00:09:42
Speaker 1: That's what other people were saying.
00:09:44
Speaker 3: We were anyway, he was cooking at the beginning of the year twenty one for twenty eight two hundred and eighty eight yards, five touchdowns to five different receivers DK Tyler, Lockett, Demo Swag, Chris Carson, man I Miss Chris, and Freddy swayin Thig's Freddy. And on defense, it's hard to remember for a lot of Sea Off fans, but Jamal Adams balling out. He had nine tackles, one sack, one TfL and two QB hits. And unfortunately this was a game where Marquise Blair tore his ACL when he was our starting nickel and that kind of changed the directory of his career. So he's back on the squad now. Was elevated last weekend. It'd be cool for him to have kind of a full circle moment, so hopefully he can get out there and knock some people around on special teams. But bump man event for a week in the NFC West, Let's find out what's the word?
00:10:30
Speaker 4: And the Seahawks are the NFC West champs again.
00:10:33
Speaker 1: What's the word? In the west On Hawk Talk?
00:10:37
Speaker 4: What's the word? The Seahawks are undefeated?
00:10:40
Speaker 5: Yep, the Niners are undefeated and the Rams and the Cardinals both took a l mean, it was crazy in the NFC West. I mean, the Rams and Cardinals both took We'll talk about the specifics, but it was close for them. But let's focus on the Cardinals and the Bills to start this thing. Man, it was a surprising game. Like just like I looked at the New England game and the Bengals score, and I got, what's going on there, typo, ESPN fixture your score.
00:11:01
Speaker 4: That's the way I looked at the Cardinals.
00:11:02
Speaker 5: Man, we didn't expect this because the Bills they don't have Stefan Diggs anymore. The Cardinals have a second year head coach and gan him. They got Marvin Harrison. He didn't really eat that much, but there were I felt them going to Buffalo was just gonna be the Bills doing what the Bills does.
00:11:18
Speaker 4: But that's not the way it all worked out. Man.
00:11:21
Speaker 5: The first half, it was seventeen to three. James Connor had himself a touchdown run. He's coming off a good year, first thousand yard season last year. But the Bills they woke up all right. Second half, they said, we're not playing with y'all no more. They go seven plays seventy yards. Josh Allen scores a touchdown, making the score seventeen to ten at the half. I'm sorry going in it was seventeen thirteen. After half it was seventeen to ten. All right, and the third quarter the Bills added two touchdowns. Then a familiar face, former Seahawks running back DJ Dallas, takes one to the house ninety six yards.
00:11:52
Speaker 4: I was happy for all man. DJ dj is such a good dude.
00:11:55
Speaker 5: Man did everything he needed to do here for the Seahawks. All I always happy for him to see that. The Bills they sealed the DELA with a field goal to win the game thirty four to twenty four. Kyler Murray had an OKDA twenty one to thirty one, one sixty two, one touchdown and one fumble loss. He had a fifty seven rushing yards that led the team. He's got to switch out up. James Conner is going to have to step up a little bit. Designed some plays for him. Marvin Harrison just had one reception for four yards. Been a lot of drama with Mark Harrison going into the season and then that first game got a few targets one reception, But I liked his response. He was like, look, I just got to get open and do my job. Perfect response for a rookie. On the other side, Josh Allen was eighteen of twenty three two hundred and thirty two yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, carried throughout nine times for thirty nine yards and two touchdowns. That's what he does. He accounted for the most touchdowns of the league last year. Josh Allen when you can buy him the pass and the run, so that's what we expect out of him. Man, despite sixty two points being scored, no receiver had more than fifty one yards.
00:12:55
Speaker 4: Goodness, gracious, I'm a receiver. That'll make me feel good. He was involved. Okay, can we do something please?
00:13:02
Speaker 1: Man?
00:13:02
Speaker 3: Well, two things for one, Josh Allen's always going to be in an MVP conversation as I don't care who's throwing the ball to.
00:13:08
Speaker 1: That's he's that talented. For them.
00:13:11
Speaker 3: It sucks for them because no matter what they do in the regular season, it's not gonna matter till January February.
00:13:15
Speaker 1: That's just kind of what the standard is that they've said out.
00:13:17
Speaker 4: That's nice, saw that I have that standard.
00:13:19
Speaker 5: Though you know, we're gonna get through the regular season, but you got to win the big one.
00:13:23
Speaker 3: Well, it's a good standard to set. That's what's going to happen here pretty soon. I believe we're going to get that big one then. But the Cardinals bump. I have no idea what to think about them, and we've kind of had this conversation about them for every year. It's kind of hard to see, even when they had Cliff Kingsbury as their head coach, and even till now, they have some talented people on the roster.
00:13:41
Speaker 1: Kler Murray is a doll. James Connor can play, but this gave me a little pause.
00:13:45
Speaker 3: They go, Okay, maybe they are better than I thought they would be after one week doing that on the road. So we'll definitely see the Seahawks don't play the Cardinals so late and later in the year. I think we play him in November. Is the first time so.
00:13:55
Speaker 1: Fooping over to the Rams.
00:13:57
Speaker 3: They went over to the Lions on Sunday Night Football, and this is a rematch of the card playoffs from last season. Matthew Stafford returning to Detroit a second time. I still think it's messed up how people be booming Matthew Stafford. Man, that's crazy to me.
00:14:09
Speaker 5: He did so much stuff there ten years there, and y'all gave him nothing to work with. HM one of the greatest receivers of all time. But you need more than that. Man showed that got some love, man.
00:14:19
Speaker 3: No, But anyway, this game again, another team, the Rams. I'm not exactly sure where they're going to be at. We know they're well coached, we know Matthew Stafford's there, Cooper Cup, Hooka and Nicola, they got dudes. Aaron Donald's gone, but they still got a lot of players there. So this game kind of went back and forth, went into overtime. The Rams battle back from a seventeen to three deficit, scored seventeen unanswered the Lions with kick a field go out the end of regulation to force overtime. Stafford showed to me, Bump that he can still sing it some of those arm angles and some of the things he can do.
00:14:46
Speaker 1: He can still play.
00:14:47
Speaker 3: He went thirty four forty nine for three hundred and seventeen yards, one touchdown, one interception, and Cooper Cup back to doing Cooper Cup things. We talk about this boy every single week. In this segment prior to Eastern Washington, had fourteen or receptions one hundred and ten yards, one touchdown. Fourteen receptions ties a career high, but Bump the biggest blow was the other.
00:15:07
Speaker 1: Receiver who merged last year.
00:15:08
Speaker 3: But Pooka and a cool rookie sensation left the game with a knee injury and is now on the rir will miss at least four games, So we'll see what happens there. Really tough to see the rookie out, but man, he's a guy that you don't want to play against.
00:15:21
Speaker 5: So hey, Coop, gotta do what uh what uh Pooka did last year. Just got to step it up, hold it down for a little bit, you know, and hopefully he comes back and he's goods to go. Yeah, you hate to see Pooka get hurt like that, especially coming off of the year he had last year.
00:15:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, but Cooper cup what was it the other year? Was it the Super Bowl year where he had the crown?
00:15:40
Speaker 5: He won the ye that crown, but it almost had the uh the receptions on a season I've seen yards reception yards record missed it by like thirty yards or something like that.
00:15:48
Speaker 1: Close close. What do you see from the Niners.
00:15:50
Speaker 4: And the Jets, Niners and Jets. This was a big one.
00:15:53
Speaker 5: I think I was other than the Hawks game, this is the one I was most excited to watch because I want to see if the old man, Aaron Rodd can do what he was supposed to do and fifty two weeks exactly from his achilles injury. It was what four plays into the game, that thing goes and he had to sit down for a long time. So everybody wanted to see. Everyone wanted to see what was going to go down, and let's see how it goes. How it went down. The Jets came out they led seven to three after the first quarter, but the forty nine Er score twenty three unanswered points to take a twenty six to seven lead. Rogers responded by throwing his first touchdown pass and six hundred and ten days funny Alan Lazard on a thirty six yard score man six hundred and ten days that made the score twenty six to a thirteen. The forty nine Ers would add two more field goals to put the game out of reach. Tyrod Taylor came in the game and garbage time, throwing another touchdown to Lazard. Blazard had himself a weird game. He had a big drop and then he also had a couple catches there. I think that's just who he is. He gonna drop it once or twice, but he can make some plays for you. Rogers finished the game at thirteen of twenty one for a bucks sixty seven, one touchdown in one interception. On the other side, mister irrelevant, we get what are we gonna stop calling him?
00:17:01
Speaker 4: That?
00:17:02
Speaker 5: Is that you think he like embraces that at this point or is he like, come on, guys, I'm legit, Like.
00:17:06
Speaker 3: I think you had to embrace it because he didn't have any option, But at this point he's I think he's pass that.
00:17:11
Speaker 4: He's passed that.
00:17:12
Speaker 5: All right, I'm gonna stop doing that to you, brock and until you play us. And then he went nineteen or twenty nine for two thirty one, zero touchdowns, zero interceptions. But the story of the game was Jordan Mason. None of y'all had him on your on your fantasy football team, noney. Maybe someone picked him up because they did have a He did slip up and tell people that he was gonna start, but he was obviously playing for Christian McCaffrey. He ran for one hundred and forty seven yards on twenty eight carries, one touchdown. Dee Ball also had seventy seven yards and one touchdown. The Niners got Minnesota next week weeks. I expect him to get it done. You got Sam Darnod over there, But the Niners look like the Niners. No surprise up even with Kitschian McCaffrey out. Remember what it was one year they had Moster that was going off. They had Jeff Wilson that was going off. It seems like whoever you put in that backfield is gonna be fine. But there's no one like Christian.
00:18:00
Speaker 3: There's no one like him. But man, they're so talented and so stacked offensively. And it pains me to say that because you know the bitter rivalry. You're obesty, But no, they're amazing. And the thing about it is they didn't skip a beat. Trent Williams isn't there during camp. The brandon Au contractors be at all these distractions and they get.
00:18:15
Speaker 5: On, you know, why you dropped the ball should have been at practice. I'm just playing now. You guys got to poke a little bit.
00:18:20
Speaker 3: Okay, No, but Trent came in there and he's still that dude, and they're still rolling. So I'm really excited for that matchup against the forty nine Ers on October tenth. I think it is on Thursday night. It's gonna be live at Lumen Field. But we got to say focus bump on the task at hand. The New England Patriots man.
00:18:37
Speaker 2: Up, man up on Hawk talk.
00:18:48
Speaker 1: Looking at the quarterbacks.
00:18:49
Speaker 3: Let's start with the Patriots quarterback Jacobe Brissette taking on the Seahawks defense.
00:18:54
Speaker 1: He's been around the.
00:18:55
Speaker 4: Block, bull. Yes.
00:18:56
Speaker 3: This is his ninth NFL season after being a third round pick from the Patriots in twenty sixteen. Since then, he's played for the Colts, Dolphins, Browns, and Commanders and now back in New England. In his nine years, he started forty nine of eighty games, so a little over half, and he's been the primary starter. In twenty seventeen, twenty nineteen, and twenty twenty two. The Patriots announced ers set as a start, despite drafting North Carolina quarterback Drake May third overall. I alluded to it earlier, this was a team decision. It seemed like they don't want to rush the rookie out there with a line that might be banged up and just putting too much pressure on him to step.
00:19:31
Speaker 1: Up be that guy right away.
00:19:32
Speaker 5: The worst thing you can do is start this young man, have them failing and sit him because mentally they don't know what that's going to do with them. I don't care if people say, oh, well there, you treat quarterbacks differently, Yes, you do, because if you don't have a quarterback, you ain't winn a no ball game. So I'm for the Patriots board Drake. I'm happy they set him down, you know, as a person. You know, I think of them as a person. I'm glad they set him down so you can develop and get right well. And you think of like the Zach Wilsons of the world. You think of all these quarterbacks that probably started too.
00:19:57
Speaker 3: Early and just never recovered, right, even Saam darnold him like that, right, or highly touted and just never really recovered. So anyway, so he's starting the season on the bench. But you know, the Patriots, like I said, of bringing him along slowly. That being said, Brissett came in and played good enough ball, winning football against Cincinnati fifteen to twenty four, one hundred and twenty one yards, no touchdown, no picks, he's not gonna do anything flashy. We know who he is. He's ready going to kill you with his arm. He's only thrown for three hundred yards six times in his forty nine career starts, so he's not gonna kill you in the arm. Career stats ten thousand yards, fifty one touchdown, twenty three interceptions. But on the Seahawks side, it's been one sample size, but they were flying around. They made bow Knicks look like the rookie he was last week, and the Seahawks boast the fourth best passing offense after just one week in the National Football League.
00:20:44
Speaker 1: So I look for them to get after Jacoby Brissett.
00:20:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, get after him. He only tossed that, I believe. I looked at it his chart, like three passes over fifteen yards, Like that's not his thing. He has the ability to push it down the field, but they want to hand the ball off play action, denk and dunk and just get through the game. Let's focus on our quarterback Geno smith Man. He didn't light it up the first play. It was the worst start you can think of, right, first play is a sax, second play is an interception. Obviously, then they get the ball again, false start, but they bounced back.
00:21:13
Speaker 4: After all that, he ended the day eighteen to twenty five.
00:21:15
Speaker 5: He completed seventy two percent of his passes for one hundred and seventy one yards in one touchdown.
00:21:19
Speaker 4: I mentioned that interception.
00:21:20
Speaker 5: He also had the longest rush of his career come on thirty four thanks forward touchdown, and he looked. It wasn't like a I don't feel comfortable running. I just have a lot of space. It was their space. I'm taking off. I'm putting a move on the safety. I'm getting in the end zone. That was fun to see. He said, he's been grinding this offseason, and you saw it with that run right there.
00:21:39
Speaker 1: Man.
00:21:39
Speaker 5: So his seventy two percent completion percentage was ninth best in the NFL during Week one. I thought it'd be top five for show, but other guys were balling as well. In twenty twenty three, he threw for thirty six hundred yards, twenty touchdowns and nine interceptions.
00:21:52
Speaker 4: Look, this patri of defense.
00:21:54
Speaker 5: We haven't seen him a lot only one week, but there they will persist.
00:21:58
Speaker 4: Some challenges.
00:21:59
Speaker 5: Man, We're gonna talk about some challenges on the defensive line and how that O line is going to bounce back, but they played well against Joe Burrow, and Joe Burrow has a great reputation in this league. He is a baller and he was twenty one of twenty nine, one to sixty four, no touchdowns and sacked three times. If you can protect Gino this week, there's gonna be some opportunity out there, no.
00:22:17
Speaker 1: Question about it, no question about it.
00:22:18
Speaker 3: And I like what you said about give Gino his respect, with some respect on his name, like he has been grinding this offseason and everyone kind of made fun of it. No once he took off the safety one of him one on one open field, hop Hop put a move on him. Come on, Gino, we got your back up. Staying on offense, Let's flip it over to the running backs. Ken Walker taking on this Patriots front seven. Ken Walker is definitely the MVP of last game, without question. On the offensive side of the ball, he had one hundred and three yards on twenty carries in the one touchdown, went over one hundred yards for the seventh time in his short career. But the most impressive stats to me, Bump is the damage he did in the second half. First half seven carries nineteen yards two point seven carry. Second half, I said the first excuse me, second half he went off eighty four yards on thirteen carries in a touchdown six point four yards per carry. Now, Walker did suffer an abdomen injury that sidelined him late in the fourth quarter against Denver, and as of right now, he's day to day, so we're gonna wait on that. So if Walker can't go this week, we're still in good hands Zach Sharboney. He had a thirty yard touchdown last week and Kenny McIntosh has still yet to get an official carry, not incleaning the preseason going down in the National Football the way down this week, So I Ken Walker can't go, it'll be really interesting to see what Kenny McIntosh can do, potentially in the first time toting that rock in the NFL in a regular season game.
00:23:36
Speaker 1: But it's gonna be tough. We talked about it before.
00:23:37
Speaker 3: This Patriots defense is impressive, holding the Bengals to just seventy yards last week. They're gonna be disciplined, They're gonna be where they're supposed to be their head coach and defensive guy. So definitely gonna be a big matchup, But I'm excited to see what Seahawks can do there.
00:23:49
Speaker 5: Bro be stubborn with the run. It's gonna open everything up. And I believe in these running backs. If Ken Walker ain't ready to go, Zach Sharboney and Kenny Mack will be just fine. Let's talk about New England's running back Ramandre Stevenson.
00:24:02
Speaker 1: Man.
00:24:02
Speaker 5: This dude in his fourth season, was a fourth round pick out of Oklahoma in twenty twenty one. Last week he did this thing one hundred and twenty yards, twenty five carries in one touchdown. He's never gone back to back a hundred yard game. So you know why I start this week exactly. Just be who you are, be who you've been in your whole career. You ain't got to go for one hundred down man. In fact, the Patriots haven't had a running back go back to back one hundred yard game since Damien Harrison twenty twenty one. Steven is trying to return to his twenty twenty two form, where he had the best season of his career.
00:24:35
Speaker 4: In twenty twenty two two.
00:24:37
Speaker 5: Hundred and ten carries, one thousand and forty yards, five touchdowns. He also had sixty nine receptions for four hundred and twenty one yards and one touchdown. His sixty nine receptions led the team and was fourth in the NFL among running backs. Last year, he took a step back, rushing for just six hundred nineteen yards, one hundred and fifty six carries and four touchdowns.
00:24:55
Speaker 4: He injured his ankle in Week thirteen and never made it back.
00:24:58
Speaker 5: Was placed on the ir He's a physical back and he will fall forward, but it also make you miss too. Like I mentioned earlier in the show that he made a couple moves in the backfield to where it's like, look, if you don't wrap up and tackle him, he can break one. But tackling wasn't an issue for these guys last week the Seahawks.
00:25:14
Speaker 4: Let's keep the good times rolling.
00:25:16
Speaker 1: How nice is that to say? Man?
00:25:17
Speaker 4: So it felt so good because the last couple.
00:25:19
Speaker 3: Of years tackling has been an issue and it's not something McDonald wasn't getting questions about, Hey, how can the tackling get better?
00:25:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, what are you doing in practice? It?
00:25:27
Speaker 3: No, tackling was on point. Defense was flying around. Let's keep it on the Patriots side. Let's sept let's foot over a defense key On White against the Seahawks offensive line. Now, I'm not going to lie full disclosure. I did not know a lot about this man.
00:25:41
Speaker 4: Before this week. Yeah, got to know him though.
00:25:43
Speaker 3: We were talking about it walking up here. We turned on the tape, You're like, wow, who is this dude? He is all over the field causing havoc. For those who don't know, he was a second round pick, played at Old Dominion and Georgia Tech. Was incredibly active in Week one. Four tackles, two and a half sacks, two TFLs, three quarterback hits, and a force fumble and outside of that, just causing havoc all game. He's gonna move around, but he primarily lines up on the left side, the offensive right. And you know, he had more sacks in the game than he had all of last season in sixteen games. Not like he didn't play last year. He only started four games, but he started where he was in all sixteen. And he's definitely gonna play a lot larger role in their defense when Matthew Judon not there, especially.
00:26:24
Speaker 1: Under coach Mayo.
00:26:26
Speaker 3: Twenty twenty three, he had twenty six tackles, three TFLs, five quarterback hits, one sack, three passes defended. Now the Seahawks offensive line, they took their lumps a little bit early on, but had a great second half. And when you look at individual matchups, the two that stood out to me, Connor Williams did his thing. I thought he played a good football game. And then Charles crossp but sixty seven. I don't know what's gotten into him because he was a great player beforehand, but he's a different dude this year. He's such a calm, nice demeanor, but he was putting dudes into the ground. He found There was one though Ken Walker's touchdown. Talked about this on the recap pod. Yeah, his old teammate, old friend, Cody Bartons standing over there, just picked him up.
00:27:06
Speaker 4: Damn grown. He's comfy. He's a man. Third year, there's something that special that happens. It's like high school.
00:27:13
Speaker 5: My coaches to say, wait till your junior year, it's going to be different. Like coach, I was All American sophomore, which you talking about, Wait till your junior year. Your third year, man, you figure some things out. So I'm excited that he had the day that he have. All let's talk about these are these Patriots receiver. They haven't done a lot over the past few years. Man, the numbers aren't great. Patriots haven't had a thousand yard receivers since Julian Edelman in twenty nineteen. It felt like Julian a place is twenty sixteen. For some reason, felt like it's been longer than that.
00:27:40
Speaker 3: I mean, it probably even feels longer for context, because that was before the pandemic.
00:27:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, so that might as well be fifteen.
00:27:46
Speaker 5: Years for this pandemic added like five six years to my body, all right. Twenty twenty three, they ranked twenty eighth in passing. The last two years, running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Ramandre Stevenson led the team in receptions. That's never good. The team looked to address the lack of production. They drafted local kid out of U dub Jalen Polk. He's got potential. I've in the preseason he was doing this thing. I think he might be. He might be a late bloomber, like later this year or maybe the next year. So let's let's keep him young. So far, but they got Damario Douglas in twenty twenty three, had forty nine receptions for five sixty one zero touchdown. Last week he had two for twelve. You got Taekwan Thornton. Twenty twenty three, he had thirteen receptions for ninety one yards dero touchdowns last week two for twenty seven. New impact players, they got kJ Osborne Osbourne sorr that that that word always checks me up. Remember the Osborne Osbourne's the reality jack. Yeah, still jacking me up. I'm just calling him kJ. kJ had two twenty in twenty twenty three. At Minnesota, he had forty eight receptions for five hundred and forty yards and three touchdowns.
00:28:52
Speaker 4: Last week he had three for twenty one.
00:28:55
Speaker 5: And then Polk was a part of the greatest offense we've seen in a while in college football at udub sixty nine receptions eleven hundred yards, nine touchdowns. Last week he had one for six. I'm just saying, look, there's potential here. You don't sleep on nobody. kJ has shown that he can do it. Bulk did it last year. I'm at you, Dub. Let's just not have this be the game where they figure something out and get these guys involved. I would love for them to rely running backs to be leading receivers on the scene.
00:29:21
Speaker 3: No question about it the way this defense is playing under coach McDonald. If you're going to be one dimensional, good luck, Yeah for real, good luck with this secondary the way they're playing, it'll be interesting. I've heard a lot of good things coming out of New England. Also about Jalen Polk as well. While he only had the one catch for six yards, everyone was talking about he was still getting open. He was still cooking guys and maybe just you know, not on the same page. Obviously he's receiver. He depends so much more on the other ten guys out on the field. So definitely be an interesting matchup to watch. But let's flip over to our receivers, DK Tyler JSN taking on this Patriot secondary bump, and last week they were led by Tyler. Tyler didn't get a lot of shine all off season. People kind of forget because just naturally he was saying this first since his entire time in the league. Tyler Lockett is the most underrated receiver in football, and no matter what we say on this podcast, Tomorro when anyone says, he kind of just stays there. But every time and time again he shows you what he can do. Last week didn't kill you you know, numbers wise, but he has some big catches in the second half, has a game sealing one handed catch that won the game, got to kneel out the clock. Became the one hundred and thirteen player in NFL history with eight thousand receiving yards. So it was good to see Tyler ball out. But in terms of production, it wasn't a big day for the offense. In terms of receivers, DCA had three receptions for twenty nine, JSN two for nineteen, and Lockett, as I mentioned, six for seventy seven. I'd expect this screw to put up a lot bigger numbers this week. Yeah, you know, you can't account for starting that poorly on offense on those three possessions because those essentially were lost possessions, and then you start establishing the run. But I feel like if rub Grub gets to do what he wants to do and establish the run and start opening things up, I'd expect these guys to have a pretty big day and then bump. The secondary for the Patriots is probably low key one of the most underrated groups in football. Yeah, that dB room was looking okay.
00:31:08
Speaker 5: Kyle Dugar, fifth year player, he started fifty three at sixty two games. He has a lot of experience in twenty twenty three, six TFLs, five quarterback hits, five passes defendant and one force fumble. And then you got one of my favorite players to watch honestly, Jabrill Peppers eight year event. He started eighty of ninety four games in twenty twenty three, seventy eight tackles, two interceptions, eight passes defended in five TFLs.
00:31:32
Speaker 4: And then kind of a local guy, he went to Oregon, you know, a little south of US.
00:31:36
Speaker 5: Christian Gonzalez, second year player and a last year seventeen tackles, one interception, three passes defendant in one TfL. Christian Gonzales with Jabrill Peppers and Dugar, I mean that is a talented, talented back end. When you look at these dbs.
00:31:52
Speaker 3: Well in the number from last year don't even really count because he got hurt. Yeah, and you know he was started at Colorado right before he went to Oregon.
00:31:58
Speaker 1: I believe first round pick.
00:32:01
Speaker 3: And well, I love what he did against Jamar when they were matched up against each other, three for fourteen twenty routes run against when Gonzales covered him just three for fourteen of.
00:32:12
Speaker 1: That, so he's definitely playing some good football.
00:32:15
Speaker 3: And I like to see what's gonna happen there, and I would love to see what happens when he's on DK K Tyler.
00:32:21
Speaker 5: You know what DKs do, man, Because last last week, like you said, no, none of the receivers had a great game, but there were some opportunities.
00:32:29
Speaker 4: And I know DK watched defemin goes.
00:32:30
Speaker 5: You know what, this week, they don't get it, So take out that frustration like you do. DK own these guys, and we can't forget Marcus Jones. He's a third year player. He had five tackles, one force fumble, and twenty twenty two he was All Pro. He was an All Pro pumper turner, so you know he's got some will go back there. And also Jonathan Jones is a nine year vet og in the game in twenty twenty three, forty eight tackles, seven passes defended.
00:32:56
Speaker 4: Let's go.
00:32:56
Speaker 5: This is the NFL, man, I mean yeah, even the Carolina Panthers, who don't look good right now, got some balls on that defense. So respect everybody, especially these guys, and let's see what we can do.
00:33:06
Speaker 3: This game definitely has the field kind of an old school run the ball, low scoring, but I could be wrong. We'll see what happens bump. But right now we're gonna tell you how the Seahawks are gonna get that victory.
00:33:15
Speaker 1: Path the victory. After forty five waits for the snaff, Michael Vickton puts it down. That kick is away. If that kick.
00:33:24
Speaker 5: Is gone, good day off.
00:33:26
Speaker 2: When bit's gone, it's a path to victory.
00:33:29
Speaker 1: On Hawk Talk, Bill Off. What happened last week?
00:33:32
Speaker 3: Man, it was an incredible day at Lumenfield that the atmosphere was different. This team was flying around defensively. It was something we hadn't seen in a couple of years. And they just need to continue to do what they did last week. Set the tone, fly around Dots and Baker Jenkins, love Spoon Reek, the backs at front seven, all of them, they were running downhill, they were hitting, guys are going down tackling them. So I just want to see that kind of energy and that kind of speed and aggressiveness in a second week, where now Mike McDonald had some film on these guys to study, because going in last week you never really knew what was gonna happen. Ricky quarterback now there's some stuff on tape. We know who Jacoby Brissette is, so I'm really excited to see what Mike can do against this Patriots offense.
00:34:13
Speaker 5: Speaking of Brisselle, you got to get after that dude. He doesn't turn the ball over a lot. I think you mentioned during the podcast he's been like the main start of three or four years, has never thrown double digit interceptions. So get after him and make him change his ways. Get him in those third and longs. And then of course last week they ran the ball all right Ramandre Stevenson, get after him. Wrap him up because we know that he can play as the physical runner. He gets downhill, he can make you move and then I'll always man take the ball away just snatching out the air force fumbles Man Jy Love punched one out so clean, and it just le Broncos got so lucky, just fell right into their lap.
00:34:49
Speaker 1: Man.
00:34:49
Speaker 4: I need to see more of that.
00:34:50
Speaker 3: No, I love that, and that's not a mistake. That's something you practice intention Those players don't just fall in your lap.
00:34:55
Speaker 1: So I love to see that.
00:34:56
Speaker 3: In three takeaways last week, Lee he even get three more offensively, There's no secret.
00:35:01
Speaker 1: They just got to start faster than that.
00:35:03
Speaker 3: You're not gonna have another game where you give up two safeties, sack, interception, supposed to win that game.
00:35:09
Speaker 5: No, two safeties. It started the way that you started. Those are those are hitting points.
00:35:13
Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm with you.
00:35:14
Speaker 3: No, I think they start faster and keep Geno clean. Right, If Gino has a clean pocket, has time to throw the ball, he's gonna do well. Make sure you protect him. Because White had a day. He can't have another two and a half sack day, you know what I'm saying. And then no penalties, don't get behind the sticks. I think we know what this team's identity wants to be, and it's running the football and it's being physical and then it's beating you over the top. So I'm really hoping we can see all those on Sunday. Established a run and this could be It's could be fun.
00:35:40
Speaker 4: But mo on, let's get to and oh, let's get there.
00:35:42
Speaker 3: No for sure, and I think we're gonna see. This is gonna be a it's like a long book. Right, we just saw chapter one. We got a seventeen page book. I'm excited to see chapter two because if they can build off what they did, last week.
00:35:55
Speaker 1: This could be a really fun year and it can lead into some real you can.
00:35:59
Speaker 4: Read, I'll do the audio audio book.
00:36:00
Speaker 3: Yes you read a book, quess all right, that's gonna do it for us. He's Michael Bumas some NASA Chobe. This has been HOWK talk. Remember you can catch us anywhere Seahawks dot Com, Apple Podcast, Spotify.
00:36:11
Speaker 1: Series x M, and more. It's gonna be fun.
00:36:13

00:36:25
Speaker 4: Kick.
00:36:25
Speaker 3: Can't wait to hear it from you, guys, and we will talk with you again on Monday, hopefully talking about a Sea Oak victory.
