Welcome to episode number 31 of Different Points. I'm joined with my co-host Catherine Llewellyn and I'm Roy Corlin and today's question is learning for life. Catherine, what are you learning? Well, actually at this point in my life I feel like I'm constantly learning, constantly.
Someone said to me when I did my master's degree it was in humanistic psychology and so of course you're looking at the mind and everything and one of the things they told us on day one was there's nothing you'll ever experience that isn't a learning opportunity. Every single thing is a learning opportunity and we thought yeah we kind of know that but yeah surely these things over here aren't really a learning opportunity. No, no, every single thing.
So we went into this really intensive period of practicing looking at every single thing that happened in our lives and every single thing we experienced as a learning opportunity and the first thing I noticed was if I went on a workshop let's say where obviously you're there to learn, people would say well what did you learn in the workshop as if I never learned anything when I wasn't in the workshop and I would explain to them yeah I learned lots in the workshop, I also learned lots in the week before the workshop and the week after the workshop because I'm learning every day all the time. So what am I learning now? At the moment doing this podcast with you Roy, I'm learning how to practice talking about a topic quickly and meaningfully and then dropping it and not over explaining which for me is a really good lesson. So I'm going to pause there.
I suppose because the listeners might know but we're not rehearsing this, we're not going through it and listening. I mean just before recording I just look, I just wrote them down, know the ones that we're going to mind because we switch each time. So it's coming from flow on what we're doing and I think that's important as well.
What am I learning? I mean I've done the Spanish podcast recently and the reason being is I want to learn Spanish and there's so many countries that speak Spanish. I've been to Spain 20 plus times, I just love it there and then I've been to Mexico. I mean loads of the South American countries speak Spanish so I see the benefit of it and I think it's just good for your brain to be doing different languages.
Obviously you know speak English, a bit of Irish but good enough at Polish but I think that's actually good for your brain as well to do it and I've always wanted to do guitar. I don't know did I ever mention it on the thing but my brother's a fantastic musician. He was doing piano, he was doing drums, everything and I was interested in guitar, bought an electric guitar, the amplifier, the whole lot but I really wasn't very good at it and I was getting lessons and the guy used to be looking out the window waiting for the hour train and you know it was like just it wasn't my thing so I just kind of and you know my brother bought me a guitar then I bought a guitar and I had one in Ireland and I was home not so long ago for a class reunion and I saw the guitar and I said yeah I'm gonna ship that out to me so I shipped it and now I have it and I was talking to my brother yesterday I was like all right I want to learn and you know he's agreed that we'd go on you know either in the evening or at the weekend and I'm trying to get my son as well just to get a few chords because every time he comes they come to me at Christmas you know he's jamming away it's a lovely session but it'd be nice even if I could kind of do a little bit so that's what I'm learning now as well tried it before probably wasn't the right timing not saying that it's the right timing now I could be worse than I was previously but at least I'm doing it and I'm doing it from a place of enjoyment instead of I have to do this.
Well you've got rhythm in your soul Roy so I'm sure you'll do really well. Well I'm the only one that can hear them beats. So just for the listeners what are you learning? We'd love to know and yeah as always thumbs up, five star in, maybe share with some friends it really helps.
Until the next episode, take care.
