Hello, my name is Tracy Sinclair and welcome to Coaching in Conversation, the Mastery Series.
00:00:27.875 --> 00:00:29.644
This series of conversations explore.
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:49.859
As the concept of mastery in coaching, and I have the great pleasure of talking with several ICF master certified coaches from around the world to understand what mastery really means to them, both as coaching practitioners and also as human beings.
00:00:50.909 --> 00:00:57.329
We explore many different perspectives and nuances of this topic, and I hope it is of use and interest.
00:00:57.445 --> 00:01:02.274
To you as you continue to navigate your own pathway of development.
00:01:05.234 --> 00:01:06.045
Hello everyone.
00:01:06.045 --> 00:01:12.165
It's Tracy Sinclair here with another episode of Coaching in Conversation.
00:01:12.704 --> 00:01:23.864
This episode is part of our Mastery series, and I have the great pleasure of talking with Dr. Elizabeth Crosse, who is a master certified coach with the ICF.
00:01:23.864 --> 00:01:30.584
She's also a supervisor and a research practitioner with a very deep interest into how coaches develop.
00:01:31.685 --> 00:01:33.635
Their expertise over time.
00:01:34.564 --> 00:01:44.385
Her own practice is shaped but with, with a very wide ranging background, including leading, learning and development in large organizations.
00:01:44.875 --> 00:01:57.805
Introducing internal coaching strategies in organizations as well as running her own coaching business for many years, having navigated dyslexia and dyspraxia herself throughout her life.
00:01:57.805 --> 00:01:58.795
Elizabeth brings.
00:01:59.299 --> 00:02:04.129
A lot of compassion and curity and clarity to her work.
00:02:04.549 --> 00:02:24.639
She has a wonderful capacity to create reflective spaces that encourage honest conversations, critical thinking, and the development of practical, pragmatic wisdom, supporting coaches to find their own path on their own growth with confidence and integrity.
00:02:25.705 --> 00:02:33.354
I really hope you enjoy this conversation, and this episode is called Deeply Superficial.
00:02:34.224 --> 00:02:34.764
Enjoy.
00:02:38.215 --> 00:02:48.205
Well, Elizabeth, it's so lovely to have the opportunity to catch up again with you about some of the really interesting aspects of your work.
00:02:48.639 --> 00:03:12.129
That is focused on the development of coaches, and I think this fits so beautifully into the Mastery series of podcasts that I've been having the pleasure of doing with people because one of the key things that comes out very, very often is that mastery isn't just a point of arrival.
00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:16.780
It's an ongoing thing and an ongoing journey.
00:03:17.409 --> 00:03:22.930
And part of that journey is our ongoing growth and development.
00:03:23.569 --> 00:03:37.639
So that gives us the perfect segue really, for you to share a little bit more about, about your views, your, your discoveries, your perspectives on navigating our development as we grow as coaches.
00:03:39.409 --> 00:03:47.840
Thank you so much for that lovely invitation and it's lovely to be with you and also to everybody that's gonna be listening today.
00:03:48.349 --> 00:03:51.919
And I think I, I always say this, that.
00:03:52.969 --> 00:03:58.069
All that I offer is just one way of looking at things to, you know, to provoke your own questioning and thoughts.
00:03:58.069 --> 00:04:04.819
So what I hope for people listening to this is it just starts to get you thinking a little bit more.
00:04:04.819 --> 00:04:07.729
It's not about necessarily going, this is right or this is wrong.
00:04:08.300 --> 00:04:12.254
And I'm already starting with a smile because we're about this together, we said.
00:04:13.219 --> 00:04:18.680
This idea of is our approach to coach development deeply superficial.
00:04:19.430 --> 00:04:27.529
And I, because that was one of the challenges I said, you know, are we just deeply superficial and I think this.
00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:37.370
Came about for me because I'm so aware at the moment that we have so many choices, so many opportunities.
00:04:37.430 --> 00:04:43.579
You know, so many people are marketing courses, webinars, retreats, instruments.
00:04:43.699 --> 00:04:47.449
You know, you only have, most of us sometimes belong to more than one professional body.
00:04:47.689 --> 00:04:53.855
There's so much coming in and how do we start to navigate all of this and perhaps.
00:04:54.785 --> 00:05:13.295
Make a little bit more of an informed choice because I think way back, actually, when I started to research this area, one of the things that really made this so interesting and relevant for me was the fact that I'm off from going, so what do I do next?
00:05:13.535 --> 00:05:17.720
And coaches, I supervise, I mentor my colleagues.
00:05:18.464 --> 00:05:23.865
People that, you know, we've, we've tutored on courses are asking exactly the same thing.
00:05:24.555 --> 00:05:34.665
And also I am sure I am not alone in making some incredible choices and really doing some wonderful things, but also investing a lot of money in some options.
00:05:34.665 --> 00:05:35.774
And I think, do you know what?
00:05:36.045 --> 00:05:37.694
I'd been better off going on a good holiday.
00:05:38.264 --> 00:05:57.115
So indeed he's a little bit of, this is not just a feeling, again, there's sort of been even about a decade ago, start to recognize that approach is development is quite often ad hoc at the best.
00:05:57.225 --> 00:06:02.745
So that's a little bit where, you know, sort of some of, perhaps our conversation is gonna go this afternoon.
00:06:02.925 --> 00:06:05.685
You know, how, how, how do we make more informed choices?
00:06:07.310 --> 00:06:12.339
Well first of all as you know, I really love this term of deeply superficial.
00:06:12.339 --> 00:06:14.620
It's so beautifully paradoxical.
00:06:14.930 --> 00:06:17.600
And it fits this topic perfectly.
00:06:17.990 --> 00:06:29.449
And the two things that are really striking me already, Elizabeth, is, is one, are we being proactive or reactive almost to our learning choices because of the plethora of.
00:06:30.334 --> 00:06:34.595
Things that are thrown at us almost you know, and are available.
00:06:35.345 --> 00:06:43.745
And also the other one is, is are, are we being really intentional, therefore when we make those choices?
00:06:43.745 --> 00:06:48.245
So there's two really already, just two really, really important themes there.
00:06:48.245 --> 00:06:52.625
So where, where would you like us to start with this?
00:06:57.904 --> 00:07:18.125
I think, as I say, it's, I'm wondering if perhaps a good place to start is this idea of being more intentional because I'm also aware that I'm sitting here feeling a little bit of a hypocrite because I do all of this work and.
00:07:19.625 --> 00:07:20.555
I do stop.
00:07:20.555 --> 00:07:24.875
And for me it's like the beginning of the year, there's something about beginning of the year, what's next?
00:07:24.875 --> 00:07:32.285
I do sit and think about, you know, what, what next for my development, what's important, and start to scope it out.
00:07:33.334 --> 00:07:41.045
And then just recently I've been going through this sort of, you know, the sort of reaccreditation process and then sort of scrambling around is have I got enough of this?
00:07:41.105 --> 00:07:42.154
Have I got enough of that?
00:07:42.785 --> 00:07:45.785
And realize in some ways I've completely lost that.
00:07:46.759 --> 00:07:54.050
Intention and it's this reminder to come back to that and again, I think.
00:07:55.204 --> 00:07:56.855
It's just about noticing it, isn't it?
00:07:56.855 --> 00:08:17.014
It's not about some rights or wrong, and some of us are very structured and like to have a plan, and some of us like to be more intuitive and ad hoc, but I think what I am starting to realize is that if we are making a more informed choice, we can better put the client at the center.
00:08:17.824 --> 00:08:19.689
Because one of the things I think that.
00:08:20.495 --> 00:08:35.875
Came outta one of the pieces of research when I was asking coaches about, you know, what was most important, almost unanimously it was something about, you know, how how can I better benefit my clients?
00:08:35.875 --> 00:08:39.504
So I think we've always almost got that as a guiding principle.
00:08:40.283 --> 00:08:44.784
And I think it's a, perhaps reminding ourself about.
00:08:45.384 --> 00:08:51.174
When we are making these decisions, coming back to thinking about what are our guiding principles?
00:08:51.534 --> 00:09:08.485
And one of the things that I did was I interviewed nine very experienced coaches on their developmental journeys because I was curious about, was there anything that we could learn from.
00:09:08.688 --> 00:09:14.000
Their decision making approaches that might help us, and I think.
00:09:14.529 --> 00:09:26.289
What came outta that was probably the first thing is this reflection on what is my purpose?
00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:28.299
And this is quite specific.
00:09:28.299 --> 00:09:33.669
It's almost what's my purpose in my development for the next six or nine months.
00:09:34.179 --> 00:09:38.049
'cause I think we also have a much wider purpose as a coach of what we are trying to do.
00:09:39.085 --> 00:09:47.034
Because our purpose as I look forward for the next six, nine next year, I think does shift and change.
00:09:47.394 --> 00:09:55.374
For instance I've just been sort of chatting to a friend who's thinking of going for MCC.
00:09:56.184 --> 00:10:05.693
So this year their purpose has suddenly become very focused on perhaps working with a mentor, thinking about what do they need to do to be able to demonstrate.
00:10:05.924 --> 00:10:07.634
Competency at that level.
00:10:08.294 --> 00:10:09.703
And that's gonna be very specific.
00:10:09.764 --> 00:10:15.284
And then once they've achieved their MCC, they're probably going to sort of recalibrate and think about what next.
00:10:15.943 --> 00:10:29.624
So I think realizing developmental purpose is contextual and it, or shift and change is perhaps the first place to start in this, you know, what's going to be my intention?
00:10:30.804 --> 00:10:33.999
So, I dunno, just sharing that, Tracy, where that's starting to take your thinking.
00:10:34.809 --> 00:10:35.198
Yeah.
00:10:35.424 --> 00:10:44.739
I, I really like that Elizabeth, because where it did immediately take my thinking was the distinction.
00:10:44.739 --> 00:10:55.929
Therefore, between engaging in something that's going to be developmental for me on the basis of my purpose, my developmental purpose at that time.
00:10:56.514 --> 00:11:21.443
Versus just acquiring more knowledge about something and that, that for me is, is part of the danger is because there are so many, I mean, not, not learning fads, I don't mean they're fads because all of these things are interesting and useful and, and valuable of course, but there will be waves won't there of everyone's going on this kind of training.
00:11:21.443 --> 00:11:23.634
Everyone's going on that kind of training.
00:11:24.294 --> 00:11:34.403
And it's very easy, isn't it, to get carried away with the, the pull to, to think, oh, I better do some of that, then I better train in this.
00:11:34.403 --> 00:11:47.129
I better get skilled in that when actually it, that may just end up with me acquiring a bit more knowledge, but it doesn't necessarily meet my developmental purpose or my developmental needs.
00:11:49.528 --> 00:11:49.809
Absolutely.
00:11:49.943 --> 00:11:52.313
And I think, you know, this is something else.
00:11:53.409 --> 00:12:00.609
You know, coming into this whole idea of choice and being deeply superficial, there's also that saying, you know, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
00:12:02.198 --> 00:12:12.219
And that idea, I mean, I think both you and I, I, you know, we notice these trends like a few years ago I think it was sort no acceptance, and then it was trauma informed coaching.
00:12:12.219 --> 00:12:19.808
And now there's a lot about sort of ai and we go on these courses and sometimes you might even do a sort of a three month course.
00:12:19.808 --> 00:12:28.379
I mean, a lot at the moment I think is around you know, coaching and being a coach that supports neurodivergent individuals.
00:12:29.219 --> 00:12:35.429
And for me, you know, even if you have done something fairly in depth, like a three months, it's probably not.
00:12:36.179 --> 00:12:45.330
Sufficiently in depth to really, really be working in an area that requires a lot of skills and knowledge.
00:12:45.330 --> 00:12:53.360
And at the the very worst extreme my, I was sitting, I was over listening to a conversation in there.
00:12:53.955 --> 00:12:59.625
Hairdresser and the client was saying to the hairdressers to say, I went on this.
00:12:59.625 --> 00:13:08.894
I, you know, he's saying, you know, I'm, I'm A DHD and, and I went on this really good course last weekend and now I'm setting up as an a DH coach.
00:13:09.375 --> 00:13:10.784
And it's scary.
00:13:11.889 --> 00:13:16.299
It's scary and that's, that's the very worst extreme.
00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:23.799
But I think also there's this part about having more knowledge is really useful.
00:13:24.309 --> 00:13:36.309
But it's also recognizing the difference of being informed and having what we need if we are really going to sort of specialize or get in deep into an area.
00:13:37.164 --> 00:13:47.875
And also I think there's, there's times, and this comes to the, so the second part of once we thought about our purpose is thinking about our developmental focus.
00:13:47.875 --> 00:14:04.914
Because there are times in our development when we do want to focus on more knowledge and more skills and more information, and that is really relevant and that is part of working for me with, you know, professional, personal, and ethical integrity.
00:14:06.054 --> 00:14:15.565
And then there's also times when perhaps we want to focus more about on how we are being, and they're not necessarily mutually exclusive.
00:14:16.434 --> 00:14:24.524
But again, it's thinking about whereabouts do I wanna focus my time, my effort my money right now.
00:14:25.379 --> 00:14:25.860
With that.
00:14:25.860 --> 00:14:31.080
So we're probably sort of weaving around a little bit and I dunno sort of where my thoughts are taking you.
00:14:32.580 --> 00:14:44.195
Well, I was just thinking as you were sharing that, I was just thinking, I don't know, take the example that you said earlier about the coach that's now considering going for their MCC.
00:14:45.225 --> 00:15:02.215
If I think about, if I'm, if I'm in that position and I'm reflecting on that and I think about what's my developmental purpose, therefore, and my developmental need it, it may or may not actually be a training program at all that I need to go on.
00:15:02.215 --> 00:15:09.345
Perhaps it's something that is more some personal work that I need to do with my own coach or my supervisor around.
00:15:10.154 --> 00:15:21.164
Growing my capacity for challenge or my capacity to handle emotion or uncertainty or whatever it might be, which aren't, aren't necessarily courses.
00:15:21.225 --> 00:15:38.250
So that's, that's the other, it might sound obvious in a way, but I think what so often we think about development as ticking off the boxes of this course and that certificate and that qualification when actually that's only a small part of development.
00:15:39.855 --> 00:16:05.085
Absolutely, and I think, I know it's sort Tatiana Rova who uses the term self as instrument of practice and it's like how we are being, and I think particularly working at the MCC level where it, yes, you are having to demonstr a certain level of competency, but it's much, much more about how we are being.
00:16:05.894 --> 00:16:10.845
As a coach and if perhaps one of the areas I'm.
00:16:11.715 --> 00:16:18.585
So recognizing that maybe it's something about, you know, my presence of how I've been with a client.
00:16:18.794 --> 00:16:29.384
That's not something you can go on a course and learn how to be present, but it is something where it might be investing in something that's enhancing your own self-awareness.
00:16:30.004 --> 00:16:33.845
Whether it's work with a supervisor or it might be some group work.
00:16:34.504 --> 00:16:56.669
And I think one of the things that I found fascinating is, all of the very experienced coaches I interviewed when I was exploring how they made the developmental decisions, all of them at some stage in their journey as a professional coach had engaged in their deep therapeutic work.
00:16:56.730 --> 00:17:00.210
You know, they'd recognize this importance of self work.
00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:01.740
And, and I think.
00:17:02.460 --> 00:17:05.400
That's where we can't separate out.
00:17:05.460 --> 00:17:07.950
It's just not about having knowledge and skills.
00:17:07.950 --> 00:17:17.190
It's so much about who we are particularly, and I think it's ongoing because again, we've talked a lot about, we don't suddenly arrive at mastery.
00:17:17.789 --> 00:17:20.220
You know, it, it's, it's always ongoing.
00:17:20.819 --> 00:17:30.930
You know, I, I liken it which sometimes I find so helpful is this, this thing, you know, like you can sort of tr nowadays it's like for a half marathon, but you can sort of train for a race and you do it.
00:17:31.589 --> 00:17:37.769
You don't stop because you have to continue having a fitness program if you want to stay fit and, and healthy.
00:17:37.769 --> 00:17:41.069
And I think it's exactly the same for our development.
00:17:41.069 --> 00:17:47.440
It's almost what do I need to be doing right now to be, to be fit for purpose.
00:17:47.920 --> 00:17:48.039
Yeah.
00:17:49.164 --> 00:17:53.605
I just so love this idea that you are bringing around.
00:17:53.775 --> 00:17:56.805
It's not so much about what we are doing, it's how we are being.
00:17:57.255 --> 00:18:03.704
This is something that's, that I really feel strongly about and it's, it's such a theme that's been emerging and.
00:18:04.470 --> 00:18:10.319
To your point about Tatiana saying of we are an instrument self as instrument of the work.
00:18:10.859 --> 00:18:30.180
So I'm thinking about, and please challenge or, or say more about this if you want to, Elizabeth, but this balance between competency and capacity of, we can so often, you know, focus on the competency that we need to develop.
00:18:30.824 --> 00:18:35.924
Versus our capacity to, to grow, be present, et cetera.
00:18:35.924 --> 00:18:40.424
So would would you like to say a little bit more about that?
00:18:41.924 --> 00:18:43.454
Let try and be concise.
00:18:43.484 --> 00:18:50.023
'cause I'm going to open a can of worms and it could lead to probably a year's worth of conversation.
00:18:50.984 --> 00:18:55.673
What it was triggering for me was the way I define the difference between.
00:18:56.184 --> 00:18:57.924
Capability and capacity.
00:18:58.894 --> 00:19:09.589
For me, our capability is our knowledge skills, our, our competencies and quite often that I think is what I would call more of a professional.
00:19:10.513 --> 00:19:11.474
Development.
00:19:12.404 --> 00:19:16.815
And then there's this idea of how we develop our capacity.
00:19:16.815 --> 00:19:23.325
And I think this is our capacity for managing complexity, managing ambiguity.
00:19:23.894 --> 00:19:33.794
And you know, I've, I've likened it to the difference of putting more acts on the phone to doing a systems upgrade, which, you know, I've, I've borrowed that metaphor from somebody else, but as we.
00:19:34.335 --> 00:19:36.494
Enhance our capacity.
00:19:36.944 --> 00:19:43.125
I think we start to shift in the way we make sense and meaning, and it, it enables us to engage in a very different way.
00:19:43.855 --> 00:19:43.944
And.
00:19:46.045 --> 00:19:55.105
Sometimes I think it's described in this idea of like horizontal or vertical development where you know, when we're doing competency and skills, it's horizontal.
00:19:55.105 --> 00:19:57.265
When we are building capacity, it's vertical.
00:19:57.444 --> 00:19:58.914
I actually don't see it like that.
00:19:59.095 --> 00:20:02.490
I think development is just development and quite often they link in.
00:20:03.424 --> 00:20:24.944
Because I might go on a more of a, one of those traditional more knowledge training courses and I, something happens there and it really makes me start to question perhaps how I'm making sense of things starting to challenge my existing assumptions and values, which is that when I starting to sort of start to build my capacity.
00:20:25.654 --> 00:20:31.864
And then equally as my capacity builds, I start to use my knowledge and skills in different ways.
00:20:31.864 --> 00:20:37.204
So, you know, I see these much more as of it's of integrated and dynamic and cyclical.
00:20:37.714 --> 00:20:42.394
But just sort of lightly holding these things in mind as we are working.
00:20:42.994 --> 00:20:51.380
And I think, again, this comes back to the purpose because there are some points where we do perhaps reach a point where we do need to have a.
00:20:51.799 --> 00:21:14.630
Develop more our capability because for instance, I'm, I'm just using this as an example 'cause it's a hot topic at the moment that, you know, I, I do realize that I want to work more in this whole idea of supporting Neurodivergence, but I know to do that I really, really need to understand, you know, what I'm doing, what the current research is, what the arguments are in the field.
00:21:14.990 --> 00:21:16.950
So, you know, yes, I might go and.
00:21:17.210 --> 00:21:25.890
Sort of, you know, do you know, I know somebody at the moment this is doing a master's in that area because she then wants to come back and have this woven into her coaching offer.
00:21:26.309 --> 00:21:26.609
Yeah.
00:21:27.119 --> 00:21:34.529
But at the same time, that doesn't mean that we suddenly stop our, our self work and this.
00:21:34.769 --> 00:21:39.269
Self work for how we are managing and building a capacity.
00:21:39.269 --> 00:21:43.529
I think that's where we are really creative.
00:21:44.039 --> 00:21:54.029
And I, when I do a webinar, one of the questions I always ask people is just, you know, what did you do last year that had the most impact on your coaching practice?
00:21:54.599 --> 00:21:59.714
And one of the answers I loved, and one of us was doing pattern cutting, you know, doing dress making.
00:22:00.664 --> 00:22:03.035
I thought, I said, tell me more.
00:22:03.694 --> 00:22:24.740
And it was the whole idea of like going back, being a complete novice, not knowing what they were doing, having to be patient, you know, having to get feedback and what she was learning about herself, you know, and unfortunately can't submit that in as CCE hours for resource development.
00:22:26.180 --> 00:22:28.130
It, you know, those sorts of things.
00:22:28.130 --> 00:22:38.404
And I think just knowing that and embracing that, that, you know, a lot of what we do, it's not necessarily gonna tick boxes, but it's what our souls need.
00:22:39.875 --> 00:22:40.565
Oh wow.
00:22:40.595 --> 00:22:48.634
I mean, that's just amazing because, you know, we can get so focused, can't we, on ticking the boxes for credentials, for renewals.
00:22:49.035 --> 00:22:58.065
And of course, yes, that is an important part of our professional development and to show that we, you know, we've achieved certain standards and quality, et cetera.
00:22:58.755 --> 00:23:04.365
I couldn't agree more about this idea of our development is broader than our coaching.
00:23:04.765 --> 00:23:09.265
And I love, you know, I love the idea of that learning from pattern cutting.
00:23:09.265 --> 00:23:12.744
And for me at the moment, it's creative writing.
00:23:13.174 --> 00:23:17.944
And yoga, you know, I've learned so much about myself in.
00:23:18.740 --> 00:23:28.309
In practicing yoga myself and also training as a yoga teacher, even though I don't teach because the learning opportunity is huge.
00:23:28.789 --> 00:23:46.940
So I, I love this idea as well of in as of inviting people, not just to look at what's the next coaching book that they should buy, or the next coaching related course they should go on, but what are some of these other experiences and skills that we could develop?
00:23:47.585 --> 00:23:55.194
That's, that inform us because then as an instrument of that work, it's going to infuse, isn't it?
00:23:55.194 --> 00:23:56.869
The practice that we do with our clients.
00:23:58.585 --> 00:24:19.865
I think, you know, as you are talking, I know one of the things that we were thinking about as we were chatting about this podcast today is almost a little bit of pragmatic as like, so, you know, what might we be doing as we're thinking about a more, taking a more informed approach to our.
00:24:22.009 --> 00:24:27.509
And I think part of it and one of the things, in, in the paper.
00:24:27.509 --> 00:24:29.039
It's gonna be coming out in February.
00:24:29.470 --> 00:24:33.789
There's something I've called like the developmental mindset inventory, which sounds a bit of a mouthful.
00:24:33.789 --> 00:24:34.660
It's ever as simple.
00:24:34.660 --> 00:24:43.359
It's basically this very familiar sort of, you know, the, the wheel, but just asking you to look at you know, what your purpose is aspects of.
00:24:44.039 --> 00:24:50.339
Developmental focus and something I just want to touch on very quickly'cause I think it is relevant.
00:24:50.369 --> 00:24:53.099
What are our practical requirements?
00:24:53.490 --> 00:25:01.710
Because the other thing we don't often acknowledge in all of this is that you know, often we are running our own business.
00:25:01.710 --> 00:25:04.634
So we've got limited budgets, we've got limited time.
00:25:05.545 --> 00:25:09.059
Sometimes we are doing something because a client requires it.
00:25:09.654 --> 00:25:16.565
I need to be I can't think of what word is perhaps, but accredited to use a particular psychometric, for instance, 'cause the clients did it.
00:25:16.565 --> 00:25:17.884
So I need to go and do that.
00:25:18.484 --> 00:25:22.865
It might just be as well about, you know, what, what time have I got this year?
00:25:23.404 --> 00:25:25.025
All of those things.
00:25:25.025 --> 00:25:27.605
And I don't think there's enough recognition and talking about.
00:25:28.759 --> 00:25:32.539
Once we've done all the lovely stuff, we have to come back and be really practical.
00:25:33.069 --> 00:25:38.140
And I've had some lovely conversations with coaches that just say, I'd love to do it, but I haven't got the head space.
00:25:38.319 --> 00:25:38.380
Yeah.
00:25:38.859 --> 00:25:42.009
To commit my time and energy to do that right now.
00:25:42.190 --> 00:25:42.400
Yeah.
00:25:42.549 --> 00:25:44.019
And that's okay.
00:25:44.170 --> 00:25:46.545
You know, recognizing what these things are.
00:25:47.529 --> 00:25:52.450
Basically, it's sort of a lot of questions, just really as something to help you reflect.
00:25:53.049 --> 00:26:00.380
And I think in this you know, perhaps we don't often, you know, most of us, I, I think probably have colleagues we have conversations with.
00:26:00.380 --> 00:26:04.220
We might have a thinking partner, we might have a supervisor, we might have an own coach.
00:26:04.809 --> 00:26:09.309
But maybe using some of those spaces for chats about, this is what I'm thinking.
00:26:09.339 --> 00:26:10.900
Offer me some challenges.
00:26:11.470 --> 00:26:21.099
Help me, you know, help me think a little bit more about I'm going to use the word strategy 'cause I love strategy, you know, so creating a little bit of a strategy.
00:26:21.619 --> 00:26:28.460
And I think for me it's about balancing, having something that can provide a guiding structure.
00:26:28.829 --> 00:26:36.420
Because I'm much more like the idea of sort, setting an intent rather than having a hard and fast goal because life happens and we need to be flexible.
00:26:36.450 --> 00:26:46.710
But having something that is going to provide some sort of guiding structure that I can sort of check in and, and look at, you know, where am I going?
00:26:46.950 --> 00:26:52.380
So when something, when that email then pops in to go, here's this course, you know, sign up, dah, dah, dah.
00:26:52.950 --> 00:26:55.920
You can actually go right before I press go, let, just stop.
00:26:55.980 --> 00:26:57.509
Let just remind myself.
00:26:57.930 --> 00:27:03.605
Lemme just think about how is this aligning or not with what I said I wanted to be doing.
00:27:06.134 --> 00:27:06.555
Gosh.
00:27:06.585 --> 00:27:16.214
I mean, that's, it just, it just feels, as I'm hearing you, it seems to make such common sense, and yet I know I've not always followed that kind of philosophy.
00:27:16.674 --> 00:27:22.525
And it's, it really strikes me as well, what you were saying about it having to fit into your life.
00:27:22.884 --> 00:27:32.529
And I know that, and I, I know for myself and I know for other coaches that I work with, how we can sometimes feel under such pressure to know more.
00:27:33.339 --> 00:27:48.819
To achieve more certifications when actually, you know, how can, how can deep learning happen in a, in a pressure, you know, in a pressure tank when life is, is already taking up a lot of your space.
00:27:49.190 --> 00:27:55.769
And we're trying to shoehorn in yet another three months modular course or something like that.
00:27:55.769 --> 00:27:58.019
I mean, it's, it, it's tempting, isn't it?
00:27:58.019 --> 00:28:01.289
But it's how productive ultimately is that going to be?
00:28:03.480 --> 00:28:25.575
And I think, you know, as, as we're talking, and I'm sort of mindful of our space today, you know, as, as we are thinking about this, you know, one of the things that's really striking me is that how important to learn to sort of reflect on our experience, and almost now we are taking it to another level, is actually to reflect on.
00:28:26.460 --> 00:28:29.819
How I'm learning, not just what I'm learning as well.
00:28:29.819 --> 00:28:35.579
And, and almost like what am I learning from, from actually that process in itself.
00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:39.029
And where do I perhaps need to be a little bit more courageous?
00:28:39.539 --> 00:28:51.984
And one of the things that really struck me, 'cause I had a, it was a, a different piece to the sort of developmental journeys, but I was exploring views on.
00:28:52.785 --> 00:29:01.694
Developmental priorities, and one of the questions I had was not doing any development, and everybody in my pilot group said, no, Elizabeth, you can't have that question in.
00:29:02.055 --> 00:29:03.855
And I wanted it in, so I stuck it in.
00:29:04.184 --> 00:29:07.125
And everybody rated that as the most unimportant thing?
00:29:07.125 --> 00:29:08.295
No, they weren't interested.
00:29:08.865 --> 00:29:17.025
But in some ways, actually there is this point about sometimes it's actually okay just to stop.
00:29:17.865 --> 00:29:22.365
It's just like, you know, when we've had a great meal, we need time to digest it.
00:29:22.529 --> 00:29:22.819
Yeah.
00:29:23.119 --> 00:29:28.605
And it might feel like I say, right, I'm not gonna commit to anything this year.
00:29:28.904 --> 00:29:31.694
It doesn't actually mean I'm not developing.
00:29:31.755 --> 00:29:35.474
It means, you know, I'm giving myself time to integrate.
00:29:35.940 --> 00:29:37.349
And digest?
00:29:37.890 --> 00:29:49.500
I haven't stuck to it a hundred percent, but one of the challenges I gave myself this year was not to sign up for another course, and if I do any webinars, I would be there and I would be present, but I wouldn't make notes.
00:29:49.920 --> 00:29:54.210
But what I wanted to do was to create time to.
00:29:54.279 --> 00:30:05.289
Read some of those books that have been sitting on my bookshelf to actually read, to reflect on those books, to make notes, to get back to mind mapping and create the space.
00:30:05.859 --> 00:30:13.059
And that's what I wanted to be doing, just as a, just, you know, sort of feel for you.
00:30:13.150 --> 00:30:16.509
So from the outside it might look like I'm not doing much.
00:30:17.019 --> 00:30:18.160
And you know, it's another thought.
00:30:18.160 --> 00:30:20.559
I think again, it comes back to the being, doesn't it?
00:30:22.019 --> 00:30:22.859
It does.
00:30:22.920 --> 00:30:44.009
Gosh, I, I mean that really, really resonates with me, Elizabeth, and I'm thinking as well as your digesting after a lovely meal metaphor, what immediately came to my mind was crop rotation and how we have to leave a field fellow to, to enrich it, for it to be sewn and, and provide a harvest again.
00:30:44.009 --> 00:30:46.170
So there is a cycle to this, isn't there?
00:30:46.170 --> 00:30:46.859
Our development.
00:30:47.759 --> 00:30:54.599
Is cyclical and it's going to take different shapes and forms based on all of the, the different things that you've shared.
00:30:54.599 --> 00:30:59.670
So, well, I'm, I am mindful of, of our time as ever.
00:30:59.670 --> 00:31:01.109
It just flies by.
00:31:01.109 --> 00:31:03.150
I've so enjoyed thinking about this.
00:31:03.150 --> 00:31:14.369
It's already, I, I'm really sit already thinking I need to write my development strategy now for 2026, but if any of our listeners are interested in.
00:31:14.894 --> 00:31:24.974
Finding out more about your work that's going to come out in February, finding out more about your developmental mindset inventory, where could they contact you?
00:31:24.974 --> 00:31:27.420
What, what would you like people to do to find out more?
00:31:27.519 --> 00:31:30.404
We, we can put my email on the.
00:31:30.664 --> 00:31:32.734
The notes send me an email.
00:31:32.835 --> 00:31:39.815
It's literally just one page thing to get you thinking, you know, I'm quite happy I, I'll send that off to you.
00:31:39.815 --> 00:31:52.515
And then on my LinkedIn, when the article's published in February, I'll do a LinkedIn post to say you know, the article with more of the details as being published then as well.
00:31:53.319 --> 00:31:54.039
Marvelous.
00:31:54.069 --> 00:31:55.809
Well, we will look out for that.
00:31:55.809 --> 00:31:56.859
Most certainly.
00:31:56.920 --> 00:31:59.049
And who knows when it comes out.
00:31:59.079 --> 00:32:06.849
Maybe you and I should catch up and have another conversation based about, based on some of the things coming out of that as well.
00:32:06.849 --> 00:32:10.480
So, but for now, thank you so much, Elizabeth.
00:32:11.079 --> 00:32:11.259
Thank you.
00:32:11.654 --> 00:32:19.960
And thank you to everybody that has been listening today and I think just a, a closing reflection.
00:32:19.960 --> 00:32:24.460
I think we are really privileged to be in this world of having so many choices.
00:32:25.029 --> 00:32:32.859
And actually the invitation is that we are just more thoughtful when we are making those choices.
00:32:33.279 --> 00:32:34.779
Mm, yes.
00:32:35.319 --> 00:32:35.920
Yes.
00:32:36.369 --> 00:32:37.000
Wonderful.
00:32:37.000 --> 00:32:40.390
So we have deep development, not superficial development.
00:32:42.339 --> 00:32:43.180
That's lovely.
00:32:43.210 --> 00:32:44.710
What a lovely note to end on.
00:32:44.710 --> 00:32:45.789
Thank you, Elizabeth.
00:32:46.660 --> 00:32:47.079
Thank you.
