Have you ever felt like you're doing everything you can... and it still doesn't feel like enough?
Maybe you've tried harder.
Worked harder.
Pushed yourself harder.
And yet somehow, the things you most want to change still feel just out of reach.
In this deeply personal episode, Trish explores one of the most hopeful shifts she's experienced through understanding the nervous system. For years, she believed she was doing her best, and she still believes that today. What changed wasn't whether she was trying hard enough. What changed was her understanding that her best isn't fixed and getting better is not totally out of her control.
As her nervous system experienced greater safety and her capacity gradually expanded, more of who she already was became genuinely available. Over time, the things that once felt exhausting, inconsistent, or even impossible began feeling more natural. Not because she forced herself to become a different person, but because she learned how to intentionally create the conditions that helped her capacity grow.
This episode isn't about trying harder.
It's about understanding what makes more possible.
Through personal stories, practical neuroscience, and the lens of The Road to Reconnection™, Trish explores how narrowed capacity can leave us feeling stuck in self-criticism, overwhelm, and discouragement, and why understanding our nervous system creates a very different path toward lasting growth.
Because lasting change doesn't begin by demanding more from ourselves.
It begins by creating the conditions where more of ourselves becomes genuinely available.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why "I'm doing my best" and "my best can become better" can both be true at the same time.
- How narrowed capacity shapes our mental health, relationships, habits, and everyday functioning.
- Why self-criticism and "just try harder" often create even more nervous system protection instead of meaningful change.
- The difference between capacity fluctuating from day to day and capacity expanding over time.
- How intentionally influencing the conditions that support greater safety and nervous system regulation can help your best become better.
- Why expanded capacity isn't about becoming a different person, but about allowing more of who you already are to become genuinely available.
- How self-compassion for whatever your best is today helps support expanded capacity for tomorrow
- How grounded hope grows from recognizing the evidence of your own expanding capacity, one experience at a time.
Growth isn't about becoming someone you're not.
It's about creating the conditions where more of who you already are can emerge.
One moment of understanding.
One moment of compassion.
One cue of safety.
One expanded capacity at a time.
Because your best isn't the end of the story.
It can continue becoming better.
And I think there is something incredibly hopeful about that.

00:00:00.800 --> 00:00:04.320
Hello, and welcome to the When Depression is in your bed podcast.
00:00:04.559 --> 00:00:08.720
I've spent years saying something, and I imagine it's something you may have said yourself.
00:00:08.880 --> 00:00:10.000
I'm doing my best.
00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:15.519
I've said it to myself, I've definitely said it to Ben many, many times, and I've genuinely believed it.
00:00:15.679 --> 00:00:17.280
As a matter of fact, I still believe it.
00:00:17.359 --> 00:00:21.440
But lately I've been realizing something that has been changing how I understand those words.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:29.120
Not only is my best not fixed, which I've always been aware of, but my best changes as my capacity expands.
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:34.159
And I can intentionally influence the conditions that help my capacity expand.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:37.119
In other words, I can help my best become better.
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:39.039
And that's what I want to talk to you about today.
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:40.880
I'm your host, Trish Sanders.
00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:48.479
I'm a licensed clinical social worker, Mago certified relationship therapist, relationship coach, and the creator of The Road to Reconnection.
00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:50.719
And I am delighted that you are here.
00:00:50.880 --> 00:00:52.240
Let's get started.
00:00:52.719 --> 00:01:00.640
Pretty much over the entire course of my personal and professional life, I have often said that I truly believe that everyone is doing their best.
00:01:00.799 --> 00:01:06.000
And this is something that I have sometimes gotten pushback on from people both in the office and in my personal life.
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:08.239
People often say something like, Really?
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:09.120
Are you sure?
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:10.799
Have you looked around lately?
00:01:10.959 --> 00:01:16.959
Look at people, look at me, look at my relationships, look at the state of declining mental health, look at our world.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:20.000
How could everyone possibly be doing their best?
00:01:20.239 --> 00:01:21.519
And I understand that question.
00:01:21.680 --> 00:01:22.480
I truly do.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:26.000
And I totally respect that everyone gets to have their own perspective.
00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:29.280
And through the lens I look through, I still believe it's true.
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:39.840
And the more that I've learned about nervous system functioning, the more I become convinced that in most moments, people are genuinely doing the best they can with what they have available to them.
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:42.719
Now that certainly doesn't mean that everyone's best looks the same.
00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:46.799
And it absolutely does not mean that we don't have responsibility for our actions.
00:01:46.959 --> 00:01:54.719
It simply means that what is genuinely available to us in any moment is connected to the amount of capacity that we have available in that moment.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:56.959
And that's related to our nervous system functioning.
00:01:57.120 --> 00:02:09.360
For years, I have understood that if I was feeling sick or overwhelmed or excessively stressed, that my best that day would certainly not look the same as on a day when I felt well rested or grounded or things seemed to be going well in my life.
00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:10.560
That made sense to me.
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:13.680
And honestly, I could usually have compassion for myself and others.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:20.240
If someone was grieving or sick or super overwhelmed, I wouldn't expect their same level of functioning to show up in that particular moment.
00:02:20.400 --> 00:02:24.879
And that compassion and understanding certainly extended to Ben in some of his hardest moments.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:31.520
When he was in his deepest depression or his most active anxiety, I certainly wasn't expecting the bar for his best to be very high.
00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:32.879
And I was often okay with that.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:37.599
And at times I was able to often extend that same level of compassion and understanding to myself.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:45.280
However, it got more challenging when my best or Ben's best stayed at that relatively low level for extended periods of time.
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:55.680
And what I didn't quite understand, what I couldn't quite figure out, was how someone's best becomes consistently better, or how someone can intentionally support their best getting better and better over time.
00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:00.319
For me, it just seemed like either I woke up having a good day or Ben seemed to be in a good mood.
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:02.319
And in those days, our best was better.
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:07.439
And I certainly felt grateful for those moments, but it wasn't very empowering not understanding how we got there.
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:12.400
I really wanted to understand how people could gradually become more capable over time.
00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:20.400
And I really wondered if it would always seem like such a tremendous effort to do some of the things that a lot of other people seem to do with relative ease.
00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:24.800
And I truly wondered if my best was ever going to get better in a consistent way.
00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:36.240
And the more I've learned about the nervous system, the more I think so much of what we label as mental health challenges or relationship struggles or self-esteem issues can often be understood through the lens of capacity.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:40.400
When our nervous system shifts into self-protection, our capacity narrows.
00:03:40.560 --> 00:03:48.479
Sometimes that means things like taking a shower or brushing your teeth, doing the laundry or the dishes, sending an email can feel incredibly difficult.
00:03:48.639 --> 00:03:53.120
And when we're experiencing that kind of narrowed capacity, it shows up in our relationships as well.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:57.280
We become more reactive, maybe more controlling, more avoidant or withdrawn.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:02.560
We might overfunction, we might underfunction, we might stay extra busy, or we might fall into collapse.
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:08.159
Not because we're bad people and not because something's wrong with us, but because our nervous system is trying to protect us.
00:04:08.319 --> 00:04:13.680
And when I myself have been in that place of narrowed capacity, it often comes with a lot of negative self-talk.
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:16.079
I think to myself that I should be able to do it.
00:04:16.160 --> 00:04:18.879
I question why can't I just do the simple thing?
00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:23.839
I question what is wrong with me and why can't I just try harder to get it done?
00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.480
And in those kinds of moments, it totally makes sense why I went into that self-attacking place.
00:04:28.639 --> 00:04:30.079
But I've also realized something.
00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:33.680
Self-attack pretty much never expands our capacity.
00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:40.480
In fact, it usually does the opposite because it's often experienced as a cue of danger, and our nervous system feels like it needs to protect itself.
00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:42.480
And then we enter this very familiar loop.
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:44.639
Narrowed capacity leads to self-attack.
00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:47.199
Self-attack creates the need for more self-protection.
00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:50.639
And self-protection usually narrows capacity even more.
00:04:50.800 --> 00:04:54.480
And before long, it can feel like change is not even possible.
00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:58.160
And for years, that's the loop I lived in so much of the time.
00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:00.720
And I did truly believe that I was doing my best.
00:05:00.879 --> 00:05:03.279
I just didn't know how to help my best become better.
00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:06.240
And I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do just that.
00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:14.240
And there's a lot of wonderful information on this out there in the area of habit development and goal formation, things like getting 1% better every day.
00:05:14.399 --> 00:05:18.000
And intellectually, I read it and it totally made sense to me.
00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:21.759
The problem wasn't that I didn't understand or agree with the concept.
00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:26.000
The problem was that I did not know what to do to help myself get 1% better every day.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:30.000
There were some days when I was doing things that supported that and I felt like I was on a roll.
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:37.360
And then there were usually a lot of other days where I wasn't coming even close and I felt like I wasn't moving in the direction that I wanted to at all.
00:05:37.519 --> 00:05:43.519
So even though there were some times I ended up feeling like I was making progress, I ended up spending a lot more time feeling defeated.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:48.879
And what polyvagel theory and understanding the nervous system gave me was not just another strategy.
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:51.120
It gave me a completely different starting point.
00:05:51.279 --> 00:05:58.879
Instead of asking how do I force myself to be better or what's the next best skill that I need to learn, I started asking very different questions.
00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:01.199
What does my nervous system need?
00:06:01.360 --> 00:06:03.600
How do I become more attuned to myself?
00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:08.079
How can I respond to myself in different ways that would actually be more helpful?
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:12.720
How can I notice and receive more cues of safety that support nervous system regulation?
00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:16.480
And what conditions could I influence that could help reduce some of the cues of danger?
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:20.639
And when I started asking myself those kinds of questions, I started discovering something.
00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:23.040
I wasn't trying to become a better version of myself.
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:28.480
I was learning how to intentionally create the conditions where more of myself could become available.
00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:30.160
And those are two very different things.
00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:32.800
And I think they come from different places in our nervous system.
00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:39.120
Striving to be the absolute best version of yourself is often coming from a sympathetically charged nervous system.
00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:53.360
Whereas being responsive to your nervous system and allowing your capacity to gradually expand so that you can access more parts of yourself is much more grounded in a ventral state in our nervous system where we can feel safe enough to become more of ourselves.
00:06:53.519 --> 00:06:57.839
My journey was not perfect and it was not linear, but it was consistent enough.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:06.959
And that experience of expanded capacity has in time become even more familiar than my old familiar experience of narrowed capacity.
00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.240
And over time, my best naturally became better.
00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:18.240
Not because I tried harder, but because more genuinely became available to me as my safety increased and my capacity expanded.
00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:22.319
A really good way to illustrate what I'm talking about right now is to talk about my garage.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:29.759
If you opened up my garage door and you looked inside right now, you might reasonably ask, Trish, is this really the best that you can do?
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:33.759
And in this moment, I honestly would say, yeah, it is.
00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:38.720
It is so cluttered and there are piles of things that need to be donated and things that need to be sold.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:44.639
And there's things like boxes of old photographs that still need to be organized and categorized and find a permanent home.
00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:49.519
And years ago, when I looked at that garage, that would have confirmed old stories about myself.
00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:53.279
I'm a mess, I'm inconsistent, I'm a total and complete failure.
00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:56.079
But today I look at that garage very differently.
00:07:56.240 --> 00:07:58.720
I no longer see it as evidence that I'm incapable.
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:02.480
I see it as evidence that my capacity just hasn't quite expanded to that point yet.
00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:06.480
And I can believe that about my garage because I have evidence in other places in my life.
00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:11.360
Evidence that over the last several years I've become more physically healthy, more emotionally healthy.
00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:15.120
I've become better to my husband, better to my kids, and better to myself.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:19.120
Not because I became a different person, but because more of me became available.
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:22.319
I've shown up consistently for this podcast for over a year and a half.
00:08:22.399 --> 00:08:27.759
And I've been steadily and consistently working on my coaching program and the theory behind all of it for months now.
00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:31.439
And sustaining those kinds of things would have felt impossible to me years ago.
00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:34.399
So now when I look at my garage, I don't feel shame anymore.
00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:35.279
I feel trust.
00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:40.399
Trust that my capacity has expanded before and trust that it will continue to expand again.
00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:47.440
And that's not wishful thinking, that's evidence based on my own life, what I've intentionally done and already created.
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:56.720
The more I've reflected on this, the more I realize that one of the things that understanding the nervous system has given me, one of the absolute greatest gifts, has been that of hope.
00:08:56.879 --> 00:08:59.039
Because I've always believed that I'm doing my best.
00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:01.679
I believed it 20 years ago and I believe it today.
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:06.240
The difference is I now know that I can intentionally influence my best.
00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:11.519
And I no longer have to just simply hope that I wake up with more capacity tomorrow than I have today.
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:18.000
And I know that I can intentionally create conditions where even more of that expanded capacity becomes possible.
00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:21.039
Not all at once, but gradually and in time.
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:25.120
I know that I can build greater understanding and awareness and compassion.
00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:27.679
And little by little my capacity expands.
00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:31.519
And as my capacity expands, my best expands too.
00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:36.320
Now, this doesn't mean that there won't be days where I still feel overwhelmed or tired or need a break.
00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:39.600
And it doesn't mean that I'll never feel discouraged or disappointed again.
00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:42.080
Capacity will always fluctuate.
00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:43.600
That's just a part of being human.
00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:47.120
But I also know something today that I didn't know all those years ago.
00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:51.600
Capacity doesn't only just fluctuate, capacity also expands.
00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:53.919
And I can participate in that process.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:56.960
Not perfectly, and I can't control it in every single moment.
00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:01.759
But I can and have done wonders by working with my nervous system instead of against it.
00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:06.960
So today when I say I'm doing my best, I still mean it, but it's not the same thing that it used to be.
00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:15.759
It's not just how I understand how I was stringing together so many days of narrowed capacity, even though I was trying so very hard to do better.
00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:18.480
Today it is filled with hope and possibility.
00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:27.039
It is an invitation to keep finding more ways to intentionally influence the conditions that allow more and more to become genuinely available.
00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:30.559
Because my best isn't fixed and it's not totally out of my control.
00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:32.960
My best can continue becoming better.
00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:44.879
One moment of understanding and self-compassion, one moment of self-care, one moment of noticing a cue of safety, one moment of being able to respond differently to a cue of danger so I can take better care of myself.
00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:51.440
Each little piece of new evidence at a time, I watch my capacity expand and my best become consistently better.
00:10:51.600 --> 00:10:54.080
And I think there's something incredibly hopeful about that.
00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:58.320
And I hope there's something in today's conversation that feels hopeful for you too.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:05.919
As our time comes to a close, I ask you to keep listening for just a few more moments because I want to thank you for showing up today.
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:13.279
And I want to leave you with an invitation as you hit stop and move back out into the world on your own unique wellness journey.
00:11:13.440 --> 00:11:21.679
In order to move from where you are today to the place where you want to be, the path may seem long or unclear or unknown.
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:30.480
And I want you to know that if that seems scary or daunting or downright terrifying or anything else, that is totally okay.
00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:34.559
Know that you do not have to create the whole way all at once.
00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:37.919
We don't travel a whole journey in one stride.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:43.039
And that is why my invitation to you today is to take a step, just one.
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:46.159
Any type, any size, in any direction.
00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:53.039
It can be an external step that can be observed or measured, or it could be a step you visualize taking in your mind.
00:11:53.200 --> 00:12:01.279
It can be a step towards action or towards rest or connection or self-care or whatever step makes sense to you.
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:16.320
I invite you to take a step today because getting to a place that feels better, more joyful, more connected than the place where you are today is possible for everyone, including you, and even when depression is in your bed.
