SOBRE ESTE EPISÓDIO
In this episode of Value Creation Nation, host Lane Taylor joins Gene Tyndall and Scott Moon to explore one of the most important foundations of modern decision-making: data. Companies have more information than ever, but more data does not automatically produce better decisions. Gene and Scott explain why data governance, consistency, accuracy, and accessibility are becoming critical as organizations look to unlock the potential of AI.

Treating data as a business asset
Companies collect enormous amounts of information about customers, vendors, inventory, lead times, and performance. Scott explains that the challenge is creating consistency in how that data is collected, structured, managed, and used. Gene adds that many businesses have plenty of “crude” data but haven't refined it into something executives can use.
Accurate lead-time and variability data can help companies determine how much inventory to buy, when to buy it, and how to prepare for seasonal or transportation disruptions. Without consistent data, businesses are forced to make critical inventory decisions with incomplete information.
Gene outlines four levels of analytics: descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive. AI is accelerating the move toward prescriptive analytics, where businesses can use information to anticipate what may happen and determine what actions to take before problems impact performance.
Governance shouldn't mean restricting access. Scott explains that its purpose is to establish accurate, consistent standards so the right people can confidently use information to run the business. If pulling basic business data takes weeks, that's a warning sign that stronger governance may be needed.
AI can identify patterns, trends, and anomalies—but only when the underlying information is reliable. Inconsistent or flawed data can produce flawed analysis. Companies that invested in data governance before AI are therefore positioned to move faster, provided their underlying workflows are also sound.
For leaders wondering where to begin, Scott recommends starting with value creation. Identify where the company is losing margin, working capital, or growth opportunities, then determine what information is needed to solve that problem. Strategy should determine which data matters—not the other way around.
The takeaway for executives is clear: data governance isn't simply an IT initiative. Accurate, timely, complete data can unlock better decisions, stronger partnerships, third-party technologies, and AI. Gene encourages leaders to manage data like any other valuable business asset and expect a return from it.
