Threshold Ep 53: Small Step Records Paul Hyde and Doc Swinson's Blenders Cut

This week we're joined by Paul Hyde, founder of Small Step Records, an independent nonprofit record label dedicated to supporting artists instead of owning them. From his life in the Space Force to building a label fueled entirely by passion, community, and generosity, Paul shares why he believes the best record labels should give more than they take. We dive into what it takes to help independent bands thrive, why physical media still matters, and how Small Step is carving out a home for great Christian pop-punk, emo, ska, and hardcore without compromising its values.

Along the way we get into Furnace Fest, Audiofeed Festival, booking Run Kid Run, Blink-182, Underoath, Five Iron Frenzy, Reliant K, the current state of the music industry, and whether albums still matter in a world obsessed with singles. We also talk about faith in music, what makes an artist worth investing in, and why building a community can have a much bigger impact than chasing fame.

If you grew up on early 2000s punk, still buy CDs, or just love hearing passionate people build something for the right reasons, this one's for you.
