When In Miami

1
00:00:00,283 --> 00:00:02,385
There's truly no place like home.
2
00:00:02,385 --> 00:00:06,072
The blend of cultures, the crazy traffic,
and the tropical days are just part
3
00:00:06,072 --> 00:00:08,058
of what makes Miami unique.
4
00:00:08,058 --> 00:00:10,910
But it takes a team
to keep the city safe and healthy.
5
00:00:10,910 --> 00:00:14,864
And our guests tell us what it takes
to work side by side in the 305.
6
00:00:16,416 --> 00:00:18,284
I might.
7
00:00:18,284 --> 00:00:21,271
I might have.
8
00:00:23,723 --> 00:00:26,559
Welcome to On call off
script, a Jackson Health System podcast.
9
00:00:26,559 --> 00:00:29,779
I'm your host, world champion
Michael Vega, the public information
10
00:00:29,829 --> 00:00:33,733
officer for Miami police, and Lieutenant
Pete Sanchez, who also works
11
00:00:33,733 --> 00:00:38,421
in public information for Miami Fire
Rescue, joining us along with Gina Patino.
12
00:00:38,655 --> 00:00:41,241
She's the nurse manager at Ryder
Trauma Center.
13
00:00:41,241 --> 00:00:43,460
Thank you all for joining us
and being here today.
14
00:00:43,460 --> 00:00:45,495
We're talking about all things
three and five.
15
00:00:45,495 --> 00:00:47,781
This community is like none other.
16
00:00:47,781 --> 00:00:52,035
And serving this community is really
what makes all of your jobs so special.
17
00:00:52,335 --> 00:00:55,338
I really want to get the tough question
out of the way.
18
00:00:55,338 --> 00:00:58,074
What is the hardest
part of each of your jobs?
19
00:00:59,059 --> 00:01:01,661
Well,
in my job, the hardest part is dealing
20
00:01:01,661 --> 00:01:04,664
with, kids that have been abused.
21
00:01:06,132 --> 00:01:06,983
Abused by their parents,
22
00:01:06,983 --> 00:01:10,303
abused by loved ones
or anything to that effect.
23
00:01:10,336 --> 00:01:12,338
Being a father, being a grandfather.
24
00:01:12,338 --> 00:01:16,309
Well, and seeing these kids, it it's hard.
25
00:01:16,659 --> 00:01:17,444
Yeah.
26
00:01:17,444 --> 00:01:20,330
It's it's tough to to stomach that.
27
00:01:20,330 --> 00:01:21,948
Yeah. Things can happen to children. Yeah.
28
00:01:21,948 --> 00:01:26,169
You, you see the face on TV and you think,
oh you know, he's got no feelings.
29
00:01:26,169 --> 00:01:27,470
But yeah, we're human beings.
30
00:01:27,470 --> 00:01:29,439
And I've cried a couple of times.
31
00:01:29,439 --> 00:01:31,791
Yeah. It makes you only human like you
said. Right.
32
00:01:31,791 --> 00:01:32,959
What about you, Gina?
33
00:01:32,959 --> 00:01:35,662
So I think for me, as a trauma nurse
34
00:01:35,662 --> 00:01:39,532
and I speak for my fellow trauma nurses,
I think it's piggy.
35
00:01:39,799 --> 00:01:43,036
Piggy backing off. What Mr. Vega said.
36
00:01:43,036 --> 00:01:48,291
It's really the stories and the patients
that come along with the injury.
37
00:01:49,058 --> 00:01:52,328
I think that we emotionally
38
00:01:52,328 --> 00:01:55,732
internalize everything
when it comes to our patients.
39
00:01:55,732 --> 00:01:57,350
But we're not only dealing
with the patients,
40
00:01:57,350 --> 00:02:01,254
we're dealing with the families
we're dealing with, the, doctors
41
00:02:01,254 --> 00:02:04,307
that are in the area, because they also go
through their different stages
42
00:02:04,307 --> 00:02:07,277
during the traumatic injuries
and also with each other.
43
00:02:07,277 --> 00:02:10,063
And just having to continue working
44
00:02:10,063 --> 00:02:14,050
and not showing any emotion,
taking care of the patient
45
00:02:14,050 --> 00:02:16,486
and then coming back the next day
and doing the same thing.
46
00:02:16,486 --> 00:02:19,522
And to a certain degree, Gina,
I can imagine with some of these families
47
00:02:19,522 --> 00:02:21,791
you become almost like an extended member.
48
00:02:21,791 --> 00:02:25,762
I know you may be seeing people
in some of their scariest circumstances,
49
00:02:25,762 --> 00:02:28,748
but I can imagine parents,
people themselves
50
00:02:28,748 --> 00:02:30,733
have to put a lot of trust in you.
51
00:02:30,733 --> 00:02:31,968
Exactly that.
52
00:02:31,968 --> 00:02:33,520
They have to put a lot of trust in us.
53
00:02:33,520 --> 00:02:34,904
They have to trust what we're saying.
54
00:02:34,904 --> 00:02:36,022
They have to trust that
55
00:02:36,022 --> 00:02:40,126
we're doing the best thing
by their patient and and right now,
56
00:02:40,126 --> 00:02:45,431
we're like their hands and ears and eyes,
and you're hugging a perfect stranger.
57
00:02:45,915 --> 00:02:48,384
Sometimes telling them
that they lost their loved one.
58
00:02:48,384 --> 00:02:51,104
And in that moment,
you become super connected.
59
00:02:51,104 --> 00:02:54,474
Like, if you knew them for your whole life
and you feel their pain.
60
00:02:54,641 --> 00:02:57,594
Wow. That's powerful. What about you?
61
00:02:57,594 --> 00:03:00,280
So I share the same sentiment
as Mike and Gina.
62
00:03:00,280 --> 00:03:04,434
I mean, we're all together
in, in law enforcement
63
00:03:04,467 --> 00:03:08,004
in first responding and public safety
and helping people
64
00:03:08,321 --> 00:03:11,424
and just seeing the tragedy,
seeing the tragedy day in, day out,
65
00:03:11,991 --> 00:03:14,544
innocent people losing their homes,
you know, their homes
66
00:03:14,544 --> 00:03:16,429
burning to the ground
and not having anything,
67
00:03:16,429 --> 00:03:17,330
and their children
68
00:03:17,330 --> 00:03:20,350
standing outside with them and waiting
for hopefully Red cross to come help,
69
00:03:20,717 --> 00:03:21,551
or an innocent lady
70
00:03:21,551 --> 00:03:25,271
going on her way to work
and she gets T-boned and crashes and dies.
71
00:03:25,788 --> 00:03:27,740
Just recently we had one
and we checked her phone
72
00:03:27,740 --> 00:03:28,841
and she had her family picture
73
00:03:28,841 --> 00:03:31,160
and she didn't make it
and that makes it so difficult.
74
00:03:31,160 --> 00:03:34,130
So it's a tragedy day in and day out
that I think that we all see
75
00:03:34,130 --> 00:03:35,081
that we can agree on.
76
00:03:35,081 --> 00:03:37,300
And again, you connect with all of them
77
00:03:37,300 --> 00:03:39,469
because we're fathers,
we're brothers were sisters.
78
00:03:39,469 --> 00:03:41,688
We're grandparents,
we're cousins, we're friends.
79
00:03:41,688 --> 00:03:43,640
So that that's what makes it tough.
80
00:03:43,640 --> 00:03:45,858
But we do it because we want to serve.
81
00:03:45,858 --> 00:03:46,693
I think they'll agree with me.
82
00:03:46,693 --> 00:03:48,828
And and it's an honor
and a privilege to serve.
83
00:03:48,828 --> 00:03:51,581
But it's still it's
the tragedy is is what weighs on you.
84
00:03:51,581 --> 00:03:53,716
Right. How do you all cope with it?
85
00:03:55,435 --> 00:03:56,986
What are the different coping mechanisms
86
00:03:56,986 --> 00:04:00,707
that you used to get through
the get through a tough day.
87
00:04:01,307 --> 00:04:03,042
So Mike and I joke with each other,
you know,
88
00:04:03,042 --> 00:04:04,544
we kind of joke
with each other to keep it light.
89
00:04:04,544 --> 00:04:05,929
That's also a common thing.
90
00:04:05,929 --> 00:04:09,532
But we've also learned through time
and study
91
00:04:09,532 --> 00:04:13,336
that mental health is a prominent thing
that we're finding out
92
00:04:13,336 --> 00:04:17,423
that's affecting first responders, nurses,
doctors, firefighters, police officers.
93
00:04:17,740 --> 00:04:21,411
So we have a lot of resources
now in place with our partners in Jackson,
94
00:04:21,411 --> 00:04:24,414
with our health and emergency services
division, that,
95
00:04:24,731 --> 00:04:28,151
we have resources where people can call
and seek for help or get through
96
00:04:28,151 --> 00:04:32,989
or even healthy things like going to do,
sauna trip together as a station
97
00:04:32,989 --> 00:04:37,644
or yoga or ice baths, things like that,
that, that influence and promote
98
00:04:37,760 --> 00:04:38,711
wellness and health,
99
00:04:38,711 --> 00:04:42,582
to try to get rid of all those bad calls
that we see that kind of stick with you.
100
00:04:42,615 --> 00:04:42,915
Right.
101
00:04:42,915 --> 00:04:44,200
And one thing that you mentioned there
102
00:04:44,200 --> 00:04:47,570
that I want to touch on to Pete
is you guys joking together.
103
00:04:48,021 --> 00:04:50,740
It laughter's like the best medicine
I know.
104
00:04:50,740 --> 00:04:52,809
Maybe we shouldn't be saying
that as a hospital podcast,
105
00:04:52,809 --> 00:04:55,662
but there's nothing like a good laugh
that can really turn your day around.
106
00:04:55,662 --> 00:05:00,016
And so yeah, and it's
and it's about laughing at each other,
107
00:05:00,016 --> 00:05:01,334
laughing with each other. Right.
108
00:05:01,334 --> 00:05:04,337
Not laughing at the situation,
of course, you know,
109
00:05:04,454 --> 00:05:06,923
because,
you know, I've been in a case where,
110
00:05:07,907 --> 00:05:08,424
just he
111
00:05:08,424 --> 00:05:11,661
was talking about a fire in a house
where a child died.
112
00:05:12,011 --> 00:05:15,281
And when I went to talk to the media,
I started to cry.
113
00:05:16,032 --> 00:05:20,119
And I had to take that that second to
to to think back and say, okay.
114
00:05:20,203 --> 00:05:20,470
Yeah.
115
00:05:20,470 --> 00:05:22,755
And then talking to Pete,
talking to someone else,
116
00:05:22,755 --> 00:05:26,175
you know, calm me down, you know,
so that I can get my story across.
117
00:05:26,659 --> 00:05:28,644
When I got home, I let it all out. Yeah.
118
00:05:28,644 --> 00:05:31,631
You know, and that's very important
to have someone that you can talk to,
119
00:05:31,814 --> 00:05:34,817
whether it's a peer support that we have,
whether it's our chaplains
120
00:05:35,268 --> 00:05:38,154
or just your spouses at home,
you know, going home
121
00:05:38,154 --> 00:05:41,274
and spilling your guts with them
and telling them, I had this case
122
00:05:41,274 --> 00:05:44,260
today,
it really hurt me and just let it out.
123
00:05:44,260 --> 00:05:47,530
She knows that the the case
for the trauma team, the camaraderie.
124
00:05:47,714 --> 00:05:50,450
I think that humor does play, part of it.
125
00:05:50,450 --> 00:05:53,453
And it's, some people may not view it as,
126
00:05:53,453 --> 00:05:56,806
as, kosher at times, but like, Mr.
127
00:05:56,806 --> 00:06:01,544
Vega said, we are laughing in the moment,
but not at the situation.
128
00:06:01,544 --> 00:06:02,111
Right.
129
00:06:02,111 --> 00:06:06,015
And with us, the nurses, one thing we do
when we have really hard, cases
130
00:06:06,015 --> 00:06:09,285
and we have the time we do debrief
and we talk within ourselves.
131
00:06:09,736 --> 00:06:11,304
How did you feel? What can we do?
132
00:06:11,304 --> 00:06:12,588
We hug each other.
133
00:06:12,588 --> 00:06:16,209
And I think, like in the trauma
research family, we are all a family.
134
00:06:16,509 --> 00:06:19,629
So we support each other
like a great deal.
135
00:06:19,929 --> 00:06:22,031
Also, I feel like
Jackson has put a lot of things
136
00:06:22,031 --> 00:06:25,401
into place for us where
we can actually reach out and get help.
137
00:06:25,852 --> 00:06:29,055
So we appreciate that and some of us use
it at times when needed.
138
00:06:29,172 --> 00:06:31,040
And isn't
that the beautiful thing about Miami
139
00:06:31,040 --> 00:06:33,142
is that no matter where you're at
and where you go,
140
00:06:33,142 --> 00:06:37,163
you can find community and find people
to relate to and absolutely build
141
00:06:37,163 --> 00:06:40,149
that circle of friends around you
that you can make jokes with.
142
00:06:40,433 --> 00:06:42,885
Yeah,
I want to ask something with you, too.
143
00:06:42,885 --> 00:06:47,540
Between fire and police, is there a sense
of competition at times or
144
00:06:48,775 --> 00:06:50,176
not? Talk to me about it.
145
00:06:50,176 --> 00:06:52,578
Honestly,
I've been a peer for eight years.
146
00:06:52,578 --> 00:06:55,581
I think you have over six, six, six.
147
00:06:55,698 --> 00:07:00,069
And the relationship that Pete and I have,
and not only us, but we also have it
148
00:07:00,069 --> 00:07:04,907
with JM, with you guys here and
and just the relationship that we have.
149
00:07:05,208 --> 00:07:06,909
We're more like brothers.
150
00:07:06,909 --> 00:07:07,543
Like brothers.
151
00:07:07,543 --> 00:07:10,997
You know, arguing with each other
just this, this afternoon here up on me.
152
00:07:11,447 --> 00:07:13,900
But but then he comes in
and I tell him I love them.
153
00:07:13,900 --> 00:07:15,284
You guys come in with drummers
154
00:07:15,284 --> 00:07:19,338
so I can hear you, just like,
you know, it's like he said, it's you.
155
00:07:19,388 --> 00:07:22,842
In order to be able to serve the public
and serve them fully,
156
00:07:23,392 --> 00:07:24,744
you have to be invested.
157
00:07:24,744 --> 00:07:27,613
And you have to be able
to leave your ego out the door
158
00:07:27,613 --> 00:07:30,983
and work together as the agencies,
because we also repurpose.
159
00:07:31,400 --> 00:07:34,003
We're nothing without Jackson Jackson's
nothing without us.
160
00:07:34,003 --> 00:07:35,688
We're nothing without our law enforcement.
161
00:07:35,688 --> 00:07:38,141
Wherever you see a fire truck,
you're going to see a police car,
162
00:07:38,141 --> 00:07:40,460
and we're depending on them,
and they know that we're coming in.
163
00:07:40,460 --> 00:07:42,612
And when we come in
and in that trauma center,
164
00:07:42,612 --> 00:07:44,230
all those doctors
and nurses are ready to go.
165
00:07:44,230 --> 00:07:46,999
They're like an army waiting
to take that patient from our hands.
166
00:07:46,999 --> 00:07:50,002
You see it like, I get goosebumps
telling you because it's just,
167
00:07:50,119 --> 00:07:52,305
you know, it's it's so important
what we all do together.
168
00:07:52,305 --> 00:07:52,822
But we do.
169
00:07:52,822 --> 00:07:55,992
We joke, you know, and it goes back to the
what we're talking about before.
170
00:07:55,992 --> 00:07:59,445
Like we joke to get through things to,
to help us, you know, cope
171
00:07:59,445 --> 00:08:01,180
with a lot of the difficult stuff
that we see.
172
00:08:01,180 --> 00:08:03,649
How important
is that coordination of communication.
173
00:08:03,649 --> 00:08:05,535
Something something big happens, right?
174
00:08:05,535 --> 00:08:06,853
We don't even need to put a name on it.
175
00:08:06,853 --> 00:08:07,420
It's Miami.
176
00:08:07,420 --> 00:08:09,889
Something is going to happen. Right?
177
00:08:09,889 --> 00:08:13,209
How important is it from the moment
that first call comes in to
178
00:08:13,209 --> 00:08:16,579
when they meet, you know, like, yeah,
that call is super important.
179
00:08:16,579 --> 00:08:21,551
So the way I see it is fire rescue
is our eyes and ears right out there.
180
00:08:21,551 --> 00:08:22,752
They're the ones responding.
181
00:08:22,752 --> 00:08:24,820
They're putting themselves in danger
in the moment.
182
00:08:24,820 --> 00:08:27,256
They don't know
the same as police officers.
183
00:08:27,256 --> 00:08:29,358
They don't know what they're going into.
184
00:08:29,358 --> 00:08:31,093
The best thing they do is triage.
185
00:08:31,093 --> 00:08:34,163
They stabilize,
and they give us a detailed report.
186
00:08:34,363 --> 00:08:37,033
With that report,
what we do is able to activate
187
00:08:37,033 --> 00:08:39,285
all the resources that we need
for that patient.
188
00:08:39,285 --> 00:08:40,520
Depending on the report
189
00:08:40,520 --> 00:08:44,574
that Pete and his team give us,
then we'll know if the vitals are low.
190
00:08:44,574 --> 00:08:46,692
If the blood pressure is low,
we're getting blood already.
191
00:08:46,692 --> 00:08:49,629
It's in the room. And like Pete said,
we're like an army.
192
00:08:49,629 --> 00:08:51,831
We're ready for everything
that's coming through the door.
193
00:08:51,831 --> 00:08:55,067
So their communication to us
is key, right?
194
00:08:55,067 --> 00:08:57,253
And then you build
relationships off of that. Right?
195
00:08:57,253 --> 00:09:00,923
Because I'm sure you see
some of the same faces on fire rescue.
196
00:09:00,923 --> 00:09:02,592
Yeah. As time goes. Exactly.
197
00:09:02,592 --> 00:09:04,644
I've been a nurse 24 years.
198
00:09:04,644 --> 00:09:07,213
And so being
in the emergency room setting.
199
00:09:07,213 --> 00:09:11,117
So a lot of them just, you know, you know,
what's happening in their life.
200
00:09:11,117 --> 00:09:15,438
Like, you already know, you've seen them
single, married, with children.
201
00:09:15,438 --> 00:09:16,389
You get to meet their kids.
202
00:09:16,389 --> 00:09:18,441
So we are like a family, right.
203
00:09:18,441 --> 00:09:21,494
And that's when we can start
getting into the jokey brother territory
204
00:09:21,494 --> 00:09:24,230
and making things a little bit lighter
when they are heavy.
205
00:09:24,230 --> 00:09:27,233
Because things are going to happen
in Miami, right? Yes.
206
00:09:27,383 --> 00:09:30,770
So that leads me to my next question
is, can everyone recount
207
00:09:30,770 --> 00:09:34,523
something that's happened here
that is just very uniquely 3 or 5?
208
00:09:34,974 --> 00:09:36,559
Any, fun stories to share?
209
00:09:38,628 --> 00:09:41,414
I think
for me, a very Miami, I have many stories,
210
00:09:41,414 --> 00:09:43,583
but for 24 years I can imagine.
211
00:09:43,583 --> 00:09:48,854
But for Miami, Miami, I think that it's
less like a shark bite victim.
212
00:09:48,971 --> 00:09:49,689
Right? This.
213
00:09:49,689 --> 00:09:50,656
That's very Miami.
214
00:09:50,656 --> 00:09:51,140
You don't find
215
00:09:51,140 --> 00:09:54,143
that anywhere else in the nation
unless it's more like in the Caribbean.
216
00:09:54,343 --> 00:09:58,781
So I think any time you get like
a, shark bite patient.
217
00:09:59,065 --> 00:10:01,851
And I've had them myself personally.
218
00:10:01,851 --> 00:10:04,820
It's it's depending on the injury.
219
00:10:04,820 --> 00:10:07,823
Right. But it's very,
220
00:10:08,024 --> 00:10:10,359
how do you say, like, it's very unique.
221
00:10:10,359 --> 00:10:12,762
Yeah. The treatment is different, right?
222
00:10:12,762 --> 00:10:15,598
A lot of entities show up
to see what happened when it happened.
223
00:10:15,598 --> 00:10:17,683
So crowd control, super important.
224
00:10:17,683 --> 00:10:21,470
And just keeping the patient, with you,
225
00:10:22,571 --> 00:10:24,624
engage to save.
226
00:10:24,624 --> 00:10:26,309
And what a Miami thing to say, right?
227
00:10:26,309 --> 00:10:26,542
Like.
228
00:10:26,542 --> 00:10:30,112
Yeah, I was swimming off the coast
of the keys, and I got bit by a shark.
229
00:10:30,112 --> 00:10:33,316
And down here in the hospital, I think
you wouldn't think would happen to you.
230
00:10:33,316 --> 00:10:34,033
Right. But.
231
00:10:34,033 --> 00:10:36,702
But they're there. Wow.
That's incredible to hear.
232
00:10:36,702 --> 00:10:39,205
What about you guys?
I mean, my my first call,
233
00:10:40,306 --> 00:10:43,609
20, 29 years ago, when
I first started in the police department
234
00:10:43,943 --> 00:10:47,113
was, believe it or not,
a brother and sister,
235
00:10:47,747 --> 00:10:51,951
fighting over a ketchup
and not a ketchup bottle.
236
00:10:52,301 --> 00:10:55,938
You're talking about a little packet
from Burger King, okay?
237
00:10:55,938 --> 00:10:58,541
And they had a Burger King,
maybe a block away.
238
00:10:58,541 --> 00:10:59,392
Okay.
239
00:10:59,392 --> 00:11:01,610
And the first I said,
this is only in Miami.
240
00:11:01,610 --> 00:11:03,346
Where else can I get packets?
241
00:11:03,346 --> 00:11:05,865
I you know how I solve this?
It was real quick.
242
00:11:05,865 --> 00:11:08,034
I, you know, back then,
we didn't have the,
243
00:11:08,034 --> 00:11:11,954
strict domestic violence laws
where now there's domestic violence.
244
00:11:11,954 --> 00:11:13,572
Somebody is going to jail, you know?
245
00:11:13,572 --> 00:11:16,092
So these two brother,
brother and sister young,
246
00:11:16,092 --> 00:11:19,578
they were fighting over him
getting the last packet of ketchup.
247
00:11:20,179 --> 00:11:21,764
I drove over to the Burger King.
248
00:11:21,764 --> 00:11:23,649
I, I promise you, it was
249
00:11:23,649 --> 00:11:26,769
it was a block away and I thought,
can you please give me some ketchup?
250
00:11:27,353 --> 00:11:29,588
They gave me ketchup, mustard and mayo.
251
00:11:29,588 --> 00:11:33,409
And I came back to the house and I said,
you guys are, you know, here you go. Wow.
252
00:11:33,676 --> 00:11:34,960
That was all. So you played.
253
00:11:34,960 --> 00:11:36,429
Maybe
I didn't get a call there for a week.
254
00:11:36,429 --> 00:11:38,564
I think once the ketchup ran out of time.
255
00:11:38,564 --> 00:11:39,532
That's what it sounds like.
256
00:11:39,532 --> 00:11:42,852
You came in and played dad for a second
and set them straight over.
257
00:11:42,918 --> 00:11:46,672
That's my first call
as a patrol officer in the North End.
258
00:11:46,689 --> 00:11:47,723
That's so hilarious.
259
00:11:47,723 --> 00:11:50,142
Very uniquely. 305 what about you, Pete?
260
00:11:50,142 --> 00:11:54,013
So, Mike and I worked together
a lot doing public safety announcements
261
00:11:54,013 --> 00:11:54,730
for the holidays.
262
00:11:54,730 --> 00:11:58,334
And a very Miami thing that frustrates us
so much is on
263
00:11:58,334 --> 00:12:01,337
July 5th now, July 4th,
seeing on social media
264
00:12:01,570 --> 00:12:04,907
everyone that was throwing fireworks
out of their balconies, throwing.
265
00:12:04,907 --> 00:12:07,460
Yeah, yeah,
like setting fireworks. Setting fireworks.
266
00:12:07,460 --> 00:12:07,810
Part of me
267
00:12:07,810 --> 00:12:11,030
setting fireworks out of their balconies,
holding Roman candles, other balconies.
268
00:12:11,263 --> 00:12:12,431
And you see it all over the place
269
00:12:12,431 --> 00:12:14,633
and you have to remember what goes up
must come down.
270
00:12:14,633 --> 00:12:16,335
You have other surrounding
buildings around you.
271
00:12:16,335 --> 00:12:17,353
You have balconies,
272
00:12:17,353 --> 00:12:19,872
other people that are below,
some going to the balconies
273
00:12:19,872 --> 00:12:21,474
where people have couches
and they start a fire.
274
00:12:21,474 --> 00:12:23,242
So that's so Miami to us.
275
00:12:23,242 --> 00:12:26,662
And we see it and we do PSA and we beg
and plead the public and we still see it.
276
00:12:26,962 --> 00:12:28,914
We still see it. And it's illegal as well.
277
00:12:28,914 --> 00:12:32,902
You know, the thing about fireworks,
we've I've seen plenty of,
278
00:12:34,253 --> 00:12:34,904
like example
279
00:12:34,904 --> 00:12:38,891
videos, injuries of injuries and ligaments
flying off.
280
00:12:39,041 --> 00:12:42,144
Is that true? Yeah,
that's exactly it. Yeah.
281
00:12:42,144 --> 00:12:45,131
And on special events or holidays,
282
00:12:45,381 --> 00:12:48,200
like July 4th and fifth, it's
always like the day of.
283
00:12:48,200 --> 00:12:51,203
And the day after that,
you have to like up your stuff
284
00:12:51,220 --> 00:12:52,671
because things are going to happen.
285
00:12:52,671 --> 00:12:54,256
The fireworks were already prepared.
286
00:12:54,256 --> 00:12:57,977
We know the fireworks, people
blowing off their hands, etc.
287
00:12:57,977 --> 00:12:59,678
those things are going to happen.
288
00:12:59,678 --> 00:13:02,865
So that is very true. What he's saying.
289
00:13:02,948 --> 00:13:04,333
And I can imagine over the years
290
00:13:04,333 --> 00:13:08,320
you have to, like you mentioned
Pete, shed the ego and be be okay
291
00:13:08,320 --> 00:13:13,275
with repeating the same messages year
after year after year, which ones
292
00:13:13,275 --> 00:13:16,278
kind of irritate you more than others
besides the fireworks? One
293
00:13:17,680 --> 00:13:19,882
well, to me mainly is
294
00:13:20,983 --> 00:13:24,620
the fireworks one, but also boating
safety, drinking and boating.
295
00:13:24,620 --> 00:13:27,339
We see so many tragedies
now in the summer, summers
296
00:13:27,339 --> 00:13:29,658
right around the corner, and people go out
and they boat.
297
00:13:29,658 --> 00:13:31,310
They boat irresponsibly.
298
00:13:31,310 --> 00:13:34,180
And again, no matter how many times
you say, you know,
299
00:13:34,180 --> 00:13:37,366
don't drink and drive our responsible
captain, you still see the tragedies.
300
00:13:37,366 --> 00:13:40,870
You see young kids dying, you see people
crashing into innocent people
301
00:13:40,870 --> 00:13:43,839
that shouldn't even be on the water.
So those are kind of frustrating.
302
00:13:43,839 --> 00:13:45,941
But at the end of the day,
we still do our job.
303
00:13:45,941 --> 00:13:46,258
Of course,
304
00:13:46,258 --> 00:13:48,611
we still put our messaging out
because, you know, Mike
305
00:13:48,611 --> 00:13:51,614
and I talk about all the time of
we save one person from our PSA.
306
00:13:51,797 --> 00:13:52,815
I think we did a good job.
307
00:13:52,815 --> 00:13:55,818
So we'll continue to do it
and we'll be begging, pleading.
308
00:13:55,818 --> 00:13:56,902
And also you see a lot of people
309
00:13:56,902 --> 00:14:00,189
coming in and out of of the city of Miami
moving in and moving out.
310
00:14:00,189 --> 00:14:01,757
So we have to continue the message,
311
00:14:01,757 --> 00:14:03,759
because the people that we're here today
may not hear it next year.
312
00:14:03,759 --> 00:14:05,060
So that's very, very true.
313
00:14:05,060 --> 00:14:06,795
I feel like there's been
a lot more transplants
314
00:14:06,795 --> 00:14:08,831
than normal over the last
at least five years.
315
00:14:08,831 --> 00:14:10,216
I don't know about you guys.
316
00:14:10,216 --> 00:14:13,385
Anything that PSA is
that kind of just ringing in your head?
317
00:14:13,736 --> 00:14:16,739
We do it every single year of Pete and us.
318
00:14:17,489 --> 00:14:21,694
We talk about the celebratory gunfire
shooting up in the air
319
00:14:21,694 --> 00:14:25,414
on the 4th of July on the 31st,
on the 4th of July.
320
00:14:25,447 --> 00:14:27,216
It's like, why?
321
00:14:27,216 --> 00:14:29,101
Why do you have to do that? Yeah.
322
00:14:29,101 --> 00:14:32,988
You know, and and, you know, we
we were blessed last night there.
323
00:14:33,022 --> 00:14:33,722
Yeah. Last year.
324
00:14:33,722 --> 00:14:36,208
But still we see it every year.
325
00:14:36,208 --> 00:14:39,545
And we get ShotSpotter alerts,
which is a system that detects gunfire.
326
00:14:39,545 --> 00:14:41,997
Yes. And it'll tell us where
it's coming from.
327
00:14:41,997 --> 00:14:45,050
But I don't understand
the logic of saying, you know what?
328
00:14:45,084 --> 00:14:48,170
Let's celebrate by shooting up in the air,
not knowing where those
329
00:14:48,420 --> 00:14:49,171
where it's going to live.
330
00:14:49,171 --> 00:14:51,974
It's going to land in us
and her to kill someone. Right.
331
00:14:51,974 --> 00:14:56,579
So and I feel like, why do we have to
continue to say this message?
332
00:14:56,662 --> 00:14:58,464
It should be common sense.
333
00:14:58,464 --> 00:14:59,098
It should be.
334
00:14:59,098 --> 00:15:02,217
But you know what they say about common
sense is that common sense is not common.
335
00:15:02,217 --> 00:15:03,335
Right?
336
00:15:03,335 --> 00:15:05,704
You know, like it keeps all of us
employed.
337
00:15:05,704 --> 00:15:06,238
Right.
338
00:15:06,238 --> 00:15:09,808
And making sure that we tell people and
keep them educated on staying safe here.
339
00:15:10,142 --> 00:15:13,345
All of those things sound incredibly,
uniquely Miami.
340
00:15:13,829 --> 00:15:15,781
Let's get into the funny stories.
341
00:15:15,781 --> 00:15:21,186
What are some funny or I guess, situations
that you can make fun of, right,
342
00:15:21,537 --> 00:15:25,140
that have happened in your industries
that really create that sense of community
343
00:15:25,140 --> 00:15:26,675
or camaraderie among you guys?
344
00:15:27,893 --> 00:15:30,079
I'll tell you that,
345
00:15:30,079 --> 00:15:33,065
the beginning of my career,
when I was in, patrol,
346
00:15:33,065 --> 00:15:36,385
I had a call of someone
behind a refrigerator.
347
00:15:36,986 --> 00:15:38,153
So I'm.
348
00:15:38,153 --> 00:15:40,522
I want to be the first one there
before fire rescue gets there.
349
00:15:40,522 --> 00:15:43,926
You know, I want to beat them to the
to the point and rescue this person.
350
00:15:43,926 --> 00:15:44,944
Yeah.
351
00:15:44,944 --> 00:15:47,997
And I get there,
and a young lady comes out, and,
352
00:15:48,364 --> 00:15:51,600
she says that there's someone
underneath her refrigerator.
353
00:15:51,934 --> 00:15:54,153
Okay, exactly.
354
00:15:54,153 --> 00:15:54,770
That was my thought.
355
00:15:54,770 --> 00:15:57,423
I'm like, wait a second. I'm looking for
someone that was behind your refrigerator.
356
00:15:57,423 --> 00:15:59,274
You seeing that?
There's someone under your refrigerator.
357
00:15:59,274 --> 00:16:00,993
Your refrigerator is on the floor.
358
00:16:00,993 --> 00:16:02,795
Clearly. There's clearly not anybody.
359
00:16:02,795 --> 00:16:04,313
And it's not just. Look, the looks.
360
00:16:04,313 --> 00:16:06,865
He just took out his hand.
361
00:16:06,865 --> 00:16:10,836
And I'm looking at
it is like, okay, somebody did some drugs
362
00:16:12,121 --> 00:16:14,406
and I didn't know at that moment.
363
00:16:14,406 --> 00:16:16,258
Do I agree with her?
364
00:16:16,258 --> 00:16:19,194
Do I tell her you're imagining things,
ma'am.
365
00:16:19,194 --> 00:16:19,595
Calm down.
366
00:16:19,595 --> 00:16:20,813
And I was like, you know what?
367
00:16:20,813 --> 00:16:23,515
That's when Fire Rescue comes in.
368
00:16:23,515 --> 00:16:26,669
They evaluate and they take over
and we're like, okay, our job is done,
369
00:16:26,902 --> 00:16:30,205
and we leave the hard work to, and that's
what people are asking to be there.
370
00:16:30,205 --> 00:16:33,692
So exactly that happens
trying to get there, rush to get there,
371
00:16:34,176 --> 00:16:37,796
just to figure out that
maybe she needs some medical attention.
372
00:16:37,796 --> 00:16:40,249
Exactly.
What about you see anything funny?
373
00:16:40,249 --> 00:16:44,036
So I think more lighthearted for, say,
the cliche of firefighters
374
00:16:44,253 --> 00:16:45,387
save cats and trees.
375
00:16:45,387 --> 00:16:48,474
We don't get a lot of cats and trees,
but we do get a lot of ducks and drains,
376
00:16:48,841 --> 00:16:49,575
ducks and
377
00:16:50,609 --> 00:16:52,044
people to save the ducks.
378
00:16:52,044 --> 00:16:54,413
They call and we respond
and we get them out.
379
00:16:54,413 --> 00:16:56,465
We put ladders in the sewer
and we get them out.
380
00:16:56,465 --> 00:16:59,451
Obviously, the sewers are, you know,
they're contaminated, stuff like that.
381
00:16:59,468 --> 00:17:02,404
So everything we do
is kind of dangerous in our job, right?
382
00:17:02,404 --> 00:17:04,073
And no matter what,
you're exposed to things.
383
00:17:04,073 --> 00:17:06,058
But, you know, we do it. It's an animal.
384
00:17:06,058 --> 00:17:07,192
There are residents, right.
385
00:17:07,192 --> 00:17:11,096
And, those are more of the comical,
more lighthearted stories that we get,
386
00:17:11,096 --> 00:17:12,715
but we get often cats and drains.
387
00:17:12,715 --> 00:17:14,400
I mean, I'm
sorry, ducks and ducks and drains.
388
00:17:14,400 --> 00:17:16,919
I can imagine a little. I'm
a little calling.
389
00:17:16,919 --> 00:17:18,470
She's he's one day been hearing them.
390
00:17:18,470 --> 00:17:19,922
They've been hearing them
chirp because, you know, they
391
00:17:19,922 --> 00:17:22,291
they teeny little paddocks
and they're tiny
392
00:17:22,291 --> 00:17:25,144
and there's like 6 or 7 downstairs
and in the, in the drain
393
00:17:25,144 --> 00:17:29,248
and you know, we'll go respond
and we go to anything we go, you call 911,
394
00:17:29,248 --> 00:17:32,518
we need to figure it out because there's
no ten one one as they know.
395
00:17:32,518 --> 00:17:33,685
So we need to figure it out.
396
00:17:33,685 --> 00:17:36,171
But those are more humorous,
lighthearted calls that we have.
397
00:17:36,171 --> 00:17:38,874
I cannot imagine that anyone actually
has sympathy
398
00:17:38,874 --> 00:17:41,910
for these ducks
like they're invading this area,
399
00:17:41,910 --> 00:17:45,514
but you know, they are residents
and they're part of our community.
400
00:17:46,031 --> 00:17:49,034
About you, Gina, I think for me,
I mean, there's
401
00:17:49,468 --> 00:17:52,071
many funny stories,
but one that comes to mind is
402
00:17:52,071 --> 00:17:56,642
we had a trauma patient, a male victim,
and he was in his room and his wife came.
403
00:17:56,642 --> 00:17:57,843
She's crying.
404
00:17:57,843 --> 00:17:59,495
She's like, oh, I'm in a mood.
405
00:17:59,495 --> 00:18:01,980
Hey, you know, and,
you know, she's like, touching him.
406
00:18:01,980 --> 00:18:04,166
And, so, you know, she's there for him.
407
00:18:04,166 --> 00:18:06,335
We're like,
oh, giving report. That's his wife.
408
00:18:06,335 --> 00:18:09,571
And then maybe like an hour later
there's a call from the lobby
409
00:18:09,571 --> 00:18:12,141
and they're like, say hello.
And it was me that picked up the phone.
410
00:18:12,141 --> 00:18:13,709
I said, yes, hello, how can I help?
411
00:18:13,709 --> 00:18:15,711
Can the wife come back for bed number
eight?
412
00:18:15,711 --> 00:18:18,180
And I said, can you tell me the name?
413
00:18:18,180 --> 00:18:21,750
And I said, oh, no,
I'm picking up what you're putting.
414
00:18:21,750 --> 00:18:22,501
Can you.
415
00:18:22,501 --> 00:18:25,137
Yeah. So can you give me a moment, please?
416
00:18:25,137 --> 00:18:28,857
So I didn't know how to handle that
situation because I honestly can ask him
417
00:18:28,857 --> 00:18:31,343
in front of the other wife. Right.
418
00:18:31,343 --> 00:18:34,596
So, you know, I went outside, I say, hi,
how can I help you?
419
00:18:34,596 --> 00:18:36,215
Because I wanted to assess,
420
00:18:36,215 --> 00:18:40,052
the situation visually because I didn't
want to bring an angry woman visually.
421
00:18:40,052 --> 00:18:40,769
Exactly.
422
00:18:41,787 --> 00:18:42,771
Nobody was wearing a ring.
423
00:18:42,771 --> 00:18:44,973
Let me just put it
that. Goodness. You know, I spoke to her.
424
00:18:44,973 --> 00:18:47,192
I said, well, give me one moment
because some patients are in there.
425
00:18:47,192 --> 00:18:50,095
Unknown name. So I'm not sure.
Let me just call know.
426
00:18:50,095 --> 00:18:53,932
So, I asked the other wife inside
to step outside because I needed to
427
00:18:53,932 --> 00:18:57,452
ask him a personal question and he was,
oh no, really?
428
00:18:57,452 --> 00:18:59,188
He goes, I gotta get out of here.
429
00:18:59,188 --> 00:19:01,773
And I said, well, honey,
can't get out of here right now.
430
00:19:01,773 --> 00:19:04,476
I said,
tell me what you would like for me to do.
431
00:19:04,476 --> 00:19:09,181
And he's like, just have the lady
that's my girlfriend sitting here,
432
00:19:09,264 --> 00:19:13,652
have her just step out for a while
and let me call my wife.
433
00:19:13,652 --> 00:19:14,653
That's outside.
434
00:19:14,653 --> 00:19:16,855
And I called back.
I said, well, she can't come in yet.
435
00:19:16,855 --> 00:19:20,042
You know, I was like, honestly,
I was just stuck in the middle of this.
436
00:19:20,042 --> 00:19:22,194
You were stunned
that I did not want to be.
437
00:19:22,194 --> 00:19:23,462
I just going to hard.
438
00:19:23,462 --> 00:19:25,714
And I know that I probably
would have brought the other one in.
439
00:19:25,714 --> 00:19:27,566
I mean,
it would have been great entertainment,
440
00:19:27,566 --> 00:19:29,918
but it was just not the right thing
to do for my unit.
441
00:19:29,918 --> 00:19:31,303
Wrong place, wrong time.
442
00:19:31,303 --> 00:19:33,956
We wish it would have been 3 p.m..
443
00:19:33,956 --> 00:19:35,190
Maybe
I would have been stuck in the middle.
444
00:19:35,190 --> 00:19:36,959
Sounds like stories of the E.R.
445
00:19:36,959 --> 00:19:38,160
it sounds like.
446
00:19:38,160 --> 00:19:40,012
It sounds like only in Miami.
447
00:19:40,012 --> 00:19:43,799
You and your wife is coming
to take care of you out of touch.
448
00:19:43,832 --> 00:19:45,684
There it is. Incredible. Yeah.
449
00:19:45,684 --> 00:19:49,254
All right, guys,
what is one myth misconception about
450
00:19:49,555 --> 00:19:51,840
either
your industry, about your personal role
451
00:19:51,840 --> 00:19:54,927
that you would love to clear up
and just set the record straight?
452
00:19:55,194 --> 00:19:57,029
I will be the first lady
to talk about that.
453
00:19:57,029 --> 00:20:01,934
Tell me the myth
that we have a quota to give tickets.
454
00:20:02,701 --> 00:20:03,185
There is.
455
00:20:03,185 --> 00:20:03,635
Are you sure?
456
00:20:03,635 --> 00:20:05,604
Quota for a police officer?
457
00:20:05,604 --> 00:20:08,073
Sure, because the 30%,
they seem to be out there.
458
00:20:08,073 --> 00:20:09,174
There is no quota.
459
00:20:09,174 --> 00:20:11,243
We can give as many tickets as we want.
460
00:20:12,261 --> 00:20:13,862
But now I know it's always.
461
00:20:13,862 --> 00:20:16,014
I don't know why.
That's the misconception.
462
00:20:16,014 --> 00:20:17,933
You know, people are like,
oh, you have to meet your quota.
463
00:20:17,933 --> 00:20:19,084
And it's and I would,
464
00:20:19,084 --> 00:20:21,870
I would actually say, you know, yes,
actually why giving this ticket?
465
00:20:21,870 --> 00:20:26,525
I want a toaster now, you know, or
I want something a gift card, a gift card.
466
00:20:26,525 --> 00:20:29,511
Yeah, I got a gift card now,
you know, it's like there's never
467
00:20:29,511 --> 00:20:32,781
that it's illegal
to actually give a quarter, you know?
468
00:20:32,781 --> 00:20:34,416
And I was in Malta for a while
469
00:20:34,416 --> 00:20:38,604
and in Motores,
you know, you work a ten hour work, a day.
470
00:20:38,720 --> 00:20:39,171
Yeah.
471
00:20:39,171 --> 00:20:42,174
And if you come to the office
and you have one ticket,
472
00:20:42,891 --> 00:20:44,426
they're going to say, Mike,
what did you do?
473
00:20:44,426 --> 00:20:45,360
The whole day? Right?
474
00:20:45,360 --> 00:20:48,363
You're gonna tell me that you just saw one
violation, especially in this city,
475
00:20:48,964 --> 00:20:49,881
especially Miami.
476
00:20:49,881 --> 00:20:52,317
I've seen all types of stuff, and,
you know, so it's.
477
00:20:52,317 --> 00:20:53,302
Hey, what's reasonable?
478
00:20:53,302 --> 00:20:57,773
You know, but I'm not saying, Mike,
you have to give me ten tickets or Mike,
479
00:20:57,773 --> 00:21:00,876
you have to give me 15
or 20 or 30 or whatever, or even,
480
00:21:00,876 --> 00:21:02,277
like, types of tickets, right?
481
00:21:02,277 --> 00:21:05,280
You don't get ten high streets in a day,
482
00:21:05,397 --> 00:21:07,282
you know,
and every officer has their their ways.
483
00:21:07,282 --> 00:21:09,835
And that's another thing being in motors,
they will say,
484
00:21:09,835 --> 00:21:11,486
oh, you guys are
hiding underneath the tree.
485
00:21:12,537 --> 00:21:13,855
No. The reason why we're
486
00:21:13,855 --> 00:21:17,426
underneath the tree is because
I'm getting the heat from the top.
487
00:21:17,976 --> 00:21:19,911
I'm getting the heat for my motorcycle.
488
00:21:19,911 --> 00:21:22,581
Right.
And I have my bulletproof vest. Yes.
489
00:21:22,581 --> 00:21:26,184
And the floor is right there,
which is super hot in Miami. Yep.
490
00:21:26,401 --> 00:21:28,553
So that's why I'm underneath a tree.
491
00:21:28,553 --> 00:21:30,906
I'm not hiding.
My motorcycle is right there. You're just.
492
00:21:30,906 --> 00:21:31,890
Just shit.
493
00:21:31,890 --> 00:21:34,626
I just need in the middle of some shade.
Yeah, right.
494
00:21:34,626 --> 00:21:36,244
So that's another misconception.
495
00:21:36,244 --> 00:21:39,531
But I can imagine there's strategic ways
to make sure that you catch culprits.
496
00:21:39,531 --> 00:21:40,866
Of course there is.
497
00:21:40,866 --> 00:21:42,985
But we want tell those people.
498
00:21:42,985 --> 00:21:44,252
What about you, P.
499
00:21:44,252 --> 00:21:47,873
So our firefighters work
24 hour shifts. Wow.
500
00:21:48,023 --> 00:21:49,324
They sleep at the station
501
00:21:49,324 --> 00:21:50,342
you know, overnight.
502
00:21:50,342 --> 00:21:53,795
So we arrive at 730 in the morning
and we leave at 730 in the morning
503
00:21:53,795 --> 00:21:55,130
the next day.
504
00:21:55,130 --> 00:21:56,915
So while you're there,
you have to be self-sufficient.
505
00:21:56,915 --> 00:21:58,016
We have to have meals.
506
00:21:58,016 --> 00:22:00,118
And there's a misconception out there
507
00:22:00,118 --> 00:22:03,121
that people think that
when they see us out shopping,
508
00:22:03,305 --> 00:22:07,292
we're either out of service or, you know,
the taxpayers are paying our lunch.
509
00:22:07,292 --> 00:22:09,594
But what really happens
is that when you arrive
510
00:22:09,594 --> 00:22:11,313
at the station in the morning of,
we have a firefighter
511
00:22:11,313 --> 00:22:14,066
that's really going to be assigned
as a cook for the day.
512
00:22:14,066 --> 00:22:14,549
Excuse me.
513
00:22:14,549 --> 00:22:18,987
So we pay $25 each person and that buys us
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
514
00:22:18,987 --> 00:22:20,605
And it's cooked
throughout the day at the station.
515
00:22:20,605 --> 00:22:24,960
And then we try keyword
being try to sit down as a family and eat.
516
00:22:24,960 --> 00:22:27,596
But the calls always come
in. We get interrupted.
517
00:22:27,596 --> 00:22:29,998
And if you ever see us out
at a supermarket,
518
00:22:29,998 --> 00:22:31,733
please
don't think that we're out of territory.
519
00:22:31,733 --> 00:22:32,751
We're in territory.
520
00:22:32,751 --> 00:22:33,902
We are in service.
521
00:22:33,902 --> 00:22:37,289
And if a call for service comes in, we're
dropping the groceries and we're going.
522
00:22:37,289 --> 00:22:40,442
We're not finishing our shopping, you
know, we're not somewhere we shouldn't be.
523
00:22:40,442 --> 00:22:42,928
We're in the area
that we are supposed to respond to.
524
00:22:42,928 --> 00:22:45,514
So a lot of people sometimes will be like,
oh, you guys are here shopping.
525
00:22:45,514 --> 00:22:47,215
Who's going to respond to the emergency?
526
00:22:47,215 --> 00:22:48,216
So we always will.
527
00:22:48,216 --> 00:22:50,936
We drop everything we have to do,
but we do have to eat.
528
00:22:50,936 --> 00:22:54,473
We do cook for ourselves at the station
and we do, pay for it ourselves.
529
00:22:54,473 --> 00:22:57,542
And I think in some of those instances,
too, that's what we talked about earlier.
530
00:22:57,542 --> 00:23:00,996
We're a little bit of the humanity
is not actually being relayed over because
531
00:23:01,296 --> 00:23:04,166
you have to eat two
during a 24 hour shift.
532
00:23:04,166 --> 00:23:07,502
I mean, most people won't ever work
a 24 hour shift in their lives,
533
00:23:07,586 --> 00:23:09,504
but sometimes you just simply
explain to them
534
00:23:09,504 --> 00:23:11,556
what I did and they understand,
and then they thank you for your service.
535
00:23:11,556 --> 00:23:12,924
So it's just a conversation, right?
536
00:23:12,924 --> 00:23:14,643
Right.
Connecting with people where they are.
537
00:23:14,643 --> 00:23:17,362
Absolutely with the community.
So what about you, Gina?
538
00:23:17,362 --> 00:23:20,966
I think for us as trauma nurses,
I think, people think
539
00:23:20,966 --> 00:23:24,186
the myth is that people think
that you get used to dealing with death
540
00:23:24,719 --> 00:23:27,923
or that you become numb, numb to it.
541
00:23:27,923 --> 00:23:30,275
And I think that's a big misconception.
542
00:23:30,275 --> 00:23:31,626
I think that
543
00:23:31,626 --> 00:23:34,980
as a nurse and I want to speak for nurses
also, not just trauma nurses,
544
00:23:35,247 --> 00:23:41,036
that you just learn to deal with it
and live with it on a daily basis.
545
00:23:41,303 --> 00:23:43,972
As trauma nurses you, it's
not that you're stoic.
546
00:23:43,972 --> 00:23:46,775
It's not that you're serious. It's
not that you're numb.
547
00:23:46,775 --> 00:23:49,077
It's just that you are trying
to concentrate.
548
00:23:49,077 --> 00:23:50,345
Be precise.
549
00:23:50,345 --> 00:23:56,301
You're trying to make sure that you are
working safely in a chaotic moment.
550
00:23:56,368 --> 00:23:57,502
Yeah, right.
551
00:23:57,502 --> 00:24:00,505
So it's like working
while your heart is breaking.
552
00:24:00,539 --> 00:24:02,841
I would describe it in all honesty.
553
00:24:02,841 --> 00:24:03,175
Yeah.
554
00:24:03,175 --> 00:24:06,695
So you're going through the motions
and you're not in that moment
555
00:24:07,345 --> 00:24:10,732
doing the actual emotion attached to it
because you can't.
556
00:24:10,832 --> 00:24:11,700
Right.
557
00:24:11,700 --> 00:24:15,804
So I think then you go home, like,
like you said earlier, Mike.
558
00:24:16,054 --> 00:24:18,723
Then then you cry
or then you deal with it.
559
00:24:18,723 --> 00:24:21,209
And so death still affects you.
560
00:24:21,209 --> 00:24:23,061
It just affects you in different ways.
561
00:24:23,061 --> 00:24:27,332
And you learn just to live with it
and just kind of sometimes just bank it
562
00:24:27,332 --> 00:24:31,253
until you're able to release
or learn to lean on your community, right.
563
00:24:31,920 --> 00:24:33,722
And each other and your peers each other.
564
00:24:33,722 --> 00:24:34,806
Absolutely.
565
00:24:34,806 --> 00:24:35,824
So, guys,
566
00:24:35,824 --> 00:24:37,642
who would you say here now
that we're all familiar
567
00:24:37,642 --> 00:24:40,462
with each other's roles, who would you say
your has the toughest job?
568
00:24:42,063 --> 00:24:44,182
I think Gina
569
00:24:44,182 --> 00:24:45,667
I would say both of them.
570
00:24:45,667 --> 00:24:47,302
I mean, you know what you asked me?
571
00:24:47,302 --> 00:24:50,822
Would you would I do her job or his job
and would tell, you know,
572
00:24:51,089 --> 00:24:52,674
I'm sure you ask them,
would you do my job?
573
00:24:52,674 --> 00:24:54,125
And they'll sign it? No, no.
574
00:24:54,125 --> 00:24:56,945
So we all got our own. Our own thing.
575
00:24:56,945 --> 00:24:58,713
But but you know what?
576
00:24:58,713 --> 00:24:59,464
We all do.
577
00:24:59,464 --> 00:25:00,932
It's so important for the community.
578
00:25:00,932 --> 00:25:03,235
And it's it's it's a hard job anyway.
579
00:25:03,235 --> 00:25:06,238
You look at it, our,
our three jobs are super, super difficult,
580
00:25:06,354 --> 00:25:07,606
Thank you all for joining us.
581
00:25:07,606 --> 00:25:10,926
It was really nice to hear more
about the human behind the role.
582
00:25:10,926 --> 00:25:11,343
Right.
583
00:25:11,343 --> 00:25:13,795
All of you have such an important job,
and it's good
584
00:25:13,795 --> 00:25:16,798
to get down a couple of layers
and find the human.
585
00:25:17,215 --> 00:25:18,517
Thank you, thank you.
586
00:25:18,517 --> 00:25:21,069
That's all we have
for this episode of On Call Off Script.
587
00:25:21,069 --> 00:25:24,272
Make sure you subscribe on your preferred
streaming platform to hear
588

589

I.
