Pumpkin Bread, Leaf Peeping, And A Dog With A Glow Necklace

WEBVTT
00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:07.919
Welcome back to the Create Harmony Podcast.
00:00:08.080 --> 00:00:10.800
I am so glad that you are here.
00:00:11.039 --> 00:00:30.480
So this is a place where we focus all our energy on goodness, things that are good around us in the world, and that is how we are different because there is plenty of negative energy out there, and we are not necessarily ignoring that, but we're pulling our attention to the positive things that we see each day.
00:00:30.559 --> 00:00:41.439
And we're celebrating those everyday joys, those things that are like pretty granular in life, but that are special, and sometimes we overlook them as we rush through our schedules.
00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:46.240
So this is episode 150, and I am your host, Sally Burlington.
00:00:46.479 --> 00:00:54.399
And in true create harmony fashion, today we are going to talk about all the things that bring us joy in the fall.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:01:01.520
So one of the things I love about where we live, we live in North Carolina, and one of the things I love about it is the change of the season.
00:01:01.679 --> 00:01:12.640
And I've realized that I have certain seasons that I like more than others, but basically what I like is the beginning of each new season, better than any specific one in the calendar year.
00:01:12.799 --> 00:01:17.359
So when the calendar rolls around to fall, I am always excited to see what's ahead.
00:01:17.599 --> 00:01:20.400
So at our house, the rhythm looks kind of like this.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:34.719
Once there is that first little chill in the air, I mean our temperatures stay warm sometimes until mid-September, but we we still get some cooler days, September, late September, early October, and we get out, you know, what fall decor we have.
00:01:34.799 --> 00:01:36.719
We like to decorate for the seasons around here.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:41.680
And we change out our summer plants to something that will continue to grow in colder weather.
00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:44.319
Our uh winters are not so harsh.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:49.120
So we do have, we can grow pansies or violas and you know, a few other things.
00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:54.319
And we, you know, get those swapped out and we start to enjoy the coming of fall.
00:01:54.640 --> 00:02:00.239
So here are some other things about the change of the season that maybe you want to lean into.
00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:05.760
Maybe just sort of ask yourself, where can I lean into the joy of the changing of the season?
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:07.439
So maybe you could start with nature.
00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:09.360
Nature's always a great place to start.
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.520
You can really pay attention to the changes in the leaves.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:14.319
This is pretty easy.
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:16.080
You're gonna be a leaf peeper.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:26.719
And I know that sounds really simple, but sometimes when we get into our rhythms and we're going fast and we're in and out of the driveway every day, we don't really stop to notice how things are changing around us.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:37.439
So maybe what you want to do to have a little bit more fall joy is just pick one tree for this season and you're gonna watch it each day as it goes through the transition.
00:02:37.520 --> 00:02:41.039
And now look, listen, this takes minimal time and very little energy.
00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:43.520
It'll fit into most everyone's schedule.
00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:51.439
If you've got time to look at TikTok or Instagram, you've got time to look outside and see a tree's leaves change.
00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:53.759
And that is gonna help you.
00:02:53.840 --> 00:02:56.080
I know that seems like why would I want to do that?
00:02:56.319 --> 00:02:58.159
But it sort of rests your mind.
00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:05.439
It gives your your mind and your body and your psyche a chance to reconnect to the bigger, broader world around you.
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:08.400
So getting outside can be really, really healing.
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:10.639
You might want to add a short nature walk.
00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:17.919
Maybe while you're out there, you pick up a leaf or a pine cone or an acorn or something, you bring it home, just to remind yourself that you've been outside.
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:21.360
And when you look at that thing, you're reminded of your nature walk.
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:22.719
You just need to get out.
00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:24.879
Just breathe the air, see the sky.
00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:31.759
No matter where you live, you probably have some access to outdoors and some access to nature.
00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:42.400
And I know this is a little harder when the days are growing shorter and darker, you have less daylight to work with, but you can find a way to get out for just a few minutes and breathe that air.
00:03:42.479 --> 00:03:45.599
And being outside is very, very healing.
00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:49.199
So at our house, we have this habit of walking right after dinner.
00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:54.319
So we eat dinner a little bit on the early ish end and then we go for a walk around the neighborhood.
00:03:54.639 --> 00:03:59.520
And that really works best when the days are very long, when it's light until nine o'clock at night.
00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:03.360
We've got plenty of daylight left to take our evening walk.
00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:09.360
But we've tried to start doing it even when it gets colder, even when the days are shorter.
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:13.360
We've we try to consistently, you know, it takes a few more minutes to bundle up.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:16.639
Maybe you've got to, you know, wear your rain jacket or whatever.
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:24.959
We have a little uh light up, glow-in-the-dark collar for our dog so that it gets, you know, safe, more safe since it's dark outside.
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:26.720
But it is really neat to be out.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:30.079
You can see the night sky, you can see the lights of your town.
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:35.199
It's just neat to be out in your neighborhood and see what happens when it's dark.
00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:38.959
And so we've really been trying to continue to lean into that rhythm.
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:44.959
And when we get into the holiday season, it's extra fun because you can walk around and see all the Christmas lights in your neighborhood.
00:04:45.120 --> 00:04:48.959
So even if you don't want to walk, if you're not a walker, just sit outside.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:52.000
You throw on a jacket, wrap up in a warm blanket.
00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:57.600
You can sit outside, and that can be a really restorative choice and bring you some fall joy.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:05.439
You give yourself time to notice the crisp air and take note of what's going on in the sky right at that moment.
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:06.480
And that's right.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:10.399
I'm encouraging you to sit and watch the clouds for just a few moments.
00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:11.920
Put your device down.
00:05:12.079 --> 00:05:18.480
Don't sit outside and scroll through your device, but take a minute to just notice the bigger world.
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:27.120
Maybe that seems like a fluffy waste of time, but I promise you it will help you break away from the stresses of your life.
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:36.160
Even if you just do it for three minutes, it will give your mind a minute to sort through all of the things that are happening to you.
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:39.839
And it will give your mind a chance to rest.
00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:43.279
So, okay, maybe outside is not your jam.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:48.399
But listen, if you're not an outside person, you're not getting off without a chance to restore yourself.
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:53.600
You can find some cozy rhythms inside that are gonna restore your soul.
00:05:53.839 --> 00:05:56.480
Maybe you want to try a new soup recipe.
00:05:56.639 --> 00:05:58.800
We're big soup eaters around our house.
00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:03.279
We when when I was growing up, whenever it was a cold and rainy, we always said, you know, it's a soup day.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:10.000
I'm a big fan of the crock pot and putting soup in there and it simmers all day and it just makes the house seem cozy.
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:11.839
So maybe you want to give that a try.
00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:17.680
There are tons of easy, quick soup recipes that you can make, and it's just very restorative.
00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:22.319
If you're not a cook and that's not something you're interested in, but maybe you like to bake.
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:23.439
Maybe you're a baker.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:26.240
So you could bake something, something cozy and yummy.
00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:35.120
I I shared on social media the other week that I bake up a whole lot of pumpkin bread, and that's what we give to our neighbors during the fall for the holiday season.
00:06:35.199 --> 00:06:43.120
So, you know, find something that you could bake and that's yummy, and you can share it with your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers, because that really feels good.
00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:51.600
It'll be um restorative to you to make something and then share it with somebody else, and it'll bring a little bit of fall joy into their day as well.
00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:56.800
Now, another way you can do it, let's keep in mind that we want to tap into our senses.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:01.360
And one of those is fall scents, like the smells of fall.
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:06.959
So you could light a fall candle, you could choose something that you like and light that and just enjoy the smell.
00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:14.720
Or if you wanted to um make it even more simple, you could just simmer some fall spices on the stove that creates the same effect.
00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:20.079
Just get, you know, a couple cinnamon sticks, some cloves, maybe slice up an orange.
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:22.160
These are great simmer pot items.
00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:26.160
It's very natural and it's just makes your whole house smell good.
00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:33.120
Um, I happen to work from home, so I could put on a simmer pot, and or if you work from home, you can enjoy that all throughout the day.
00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:36.480
Just put water in the pot and drop the things in and just put it on simmer.
00:07:36.639 --> 00:07:39.920
And it's a great way to welcome your family home each night.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:54.000
But if you are the one coming home, this can be a nice wind-down ritual to tell yourself that you are home now and that you're settled in and you're smelling that delicious smell and that you are feeling cozy and enjoying fall.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:08:03.600
Now, for you, fall fun might be along the lines of like bonfires and tailgating at the football game.
00:08:03.759 --> 00:08:08.879
This is might be more your vibe where you're gonna really embrace the vibe of fall.
00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:14.000
You're gonna get outside and laugh with your friends and visit.
00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:23.360
You can get a fire pit really a lot of different places at your home improvement stores, and there are a wide range of sizes, there are a wide range of price points.
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:31.040
And so if you have any access to outdoors, you could grab yourself a fire pit, build a little fire, invite a friend over, make s'mores.
00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:33.840
All of that is great fall fun.
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.320
And it's a really good family-friendly activity.
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:42.000
You could invite your neighbors over or some kids down the street that might want to play with your kids.
00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:45.120
So that's a really fun way to enjoy fall.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:49.840
And I know you can think of many more fall joys that might lift your spirits.
00:08:49.919 --> 00:09:01.919
And all of these things might be just stuff you had already known, but dwelling on them for just a moment helps us get excited about them, helps us to really lean in to the joys that they bring.
00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:16.720
So from getting excited to throwing on your favorite cozy sweater, going in your closet and seeing that favorite sweater and popping it on, to maybe adding a heavier blanket on your bed at night, just think about all these little changes that you're making and enjoy them.
00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:17.919
Give that some thought.
00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:22.720
What are the autumn joys maybe that you remember from childhood that you can think of?
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:33.759
And you can maybe when you think about them, you might discover a way you can incorporate that into your current life and in a small way in your day.
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:37.519
Maybe just listening to this discussion is all you need to do.
00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:42.720
You maybe your list is so long that you think, I don't want to think about my childhood or throw an extra blanket on the bed.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.399
I've got enough to do right now.
00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:52.480
So all you needed to do was just listen and just envision all of these fall joys happening in your mind as I'm talking.
00:09:52.639 --> 00:09:58.960
So keep in mind that taking time to focus on this doesn't mean that we should tune out all the important issues in our life.
00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:01.679
It doesn't mean that we aren't gonna have a tough day.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:08.240
It doesn't mean that we're we aren't gonna feel heartbreak for ourselves or heartbreak for others when something terrible happens.
00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:17.600
This is just where we turn when we're fed up with our boss or our sister, because she did that same thing she always does, and it just drives me crazy.
00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:24.000
Or our kids are being extra needy, and we just, even though we love them, they're a lot to keep up with.
00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:28.159
And it just means that we can take a beat and we can rest our minds.
00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:32.399
We can see the good and it is well with our souls.
00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:40.480
So for our closing today, I'm gonna share one of my favorite fall poems by Robert Frost.
00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:52.879
And it goes like this Nature's first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold, her early leaves a flower, but only so an hour.
00:10:53.200 --> 00:11:04.080
Then leaf subsides to leaf, so Eden sank to grief, so dawn goes down today, nothing gold can stay.
00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:27.120
May it be so thanks for joining us today.
00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:34.879
If you've been following along, you might have already heard about this, but I want to remind you our seasonal series boxes are for sale now.
00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:37.600

00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:57.039
