Othersode #79: A Breakneck Michigan / The 355 with Gabriella Saab

WEBVTT
1
00:00:05.080 --> 00:00:12.480
Pobs and kiddies and movies. Yes, we love you. Listen to this
2
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:35.039
podcast. Please, Hello, and
welcome to book squad Goals, a crew
3
00:00:35.560 --> 00:00:41.600
of women who are ready to kill. Um. We have a special guest
4
00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:47.119
today joining us to talk about the
movie The three five five, which maybe
5
00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:51.759
you didn't hear of. I certainly
hadn't until I was trying to find stuff
6
00:00:51.799 --> 00:00:56.159
to watch for this episode. But
our special guest is Gabriella sav and she
7
00:00:56.359 --> 00:01:00.600
is here to talk about her new
novel, The Daughters of Victory and also
8
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:03.239
this movie. Welcome, Thank you, Thank you all so much for having
9
00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:07.560
me. So happy to have you
back. Yeah. I was gonna say
10
00:01:07.640 --> 00:01:11.840
glad to be back. So glad
to be back. That was also a
11
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:17.000
super fun episode on the last Checkmate
when we talked about our favorite um BF
12
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:26.400
friendships. Speaking of anyway friendships again. Susan is not here because she has
13
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:32.000
a baby and she doesn't have time
to watch still have a baby still there?
14
00:01:32.799 --> 00:01:41.840
Um, so yeah, we love
you, Susan. Um, that's
15
00:01:41.879 --> 00:01:46.400
true. I don't know. She
was at a pool, yeah, a
16
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:53.120
beach? Uh where a bathing suit
outdoors? Something I dream of? Um?
17
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:57.120
Okay, So today for our instead
of doing an intro a question.
18
00:01:57.159 --> 00:02:00.840
I'm doing something that we haven't done
in a while, but it feels like
19
00:02:00.879 --> 00:02:07.039
a perfect opportunity. You will,
it's very important that we take this quiz
20
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:13.560
to find out which character from the
three five five Um. Yeah. And
21
00:02:13.680 --> 00:02:16.280
for those of you who are not
familiar, I feel like maybe it makes
22
00:02:16.280 --> 00:02:20.560
sense to read the summary of the
movie first and then do the quiz,
23
00:02:20.599 --> 00:02:24.360
just so people have an idea of
what this is. Um CIA agent Mason
24
00:02:24.520 --> 00:02:30.159
Mace Brown, which is this is
played by Jessica Chastein, joins forces with
25
00:02:30.199 --> 00:02:36.439
a rival German agent played by Diane
Krueger, a cutting edge computer specialist played
26
00:02:36.439 --> 00:02:43.240
by Lupida Nyango, and a Colombian
psychologist played by the very not Columbian Penelope
27
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.800
rus When a to top secret weapon
falls into the hands of a group of
28
00:02:46.840 --> 00:02:52.919
mercenaries, together, the four women
embark on a breakneck Michigan Michigan. I'm
29
00:02:53.000 --> 00:03:01.840
so sorry, that's the episode title
right there, Neck Michigan. I'm so
30
00:03:01.960 --> 00:03:06.960
not used to recording at this hour. It's like, my brain is okay,
31
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:10.960
Michigan, Okay, some of us
are on the way. It's not
32
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000
even early. It's just I'm thrown
off. Um Okay. Together, the
33
00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:21.639
four women embark on a break neck
mission to save the world while staying one
34
00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:27.080
step ahead of a mysterious figure who's
tracking their every move. Um, so
35
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:30.120
that's the movie. Uh so we're
going to find out which character we are.
36
00:03:30.280 --> 00:03:36.120
Also, this description did not mention
um lin Mi Shang, who is
37
00:03:36.159 --> 00:03:40.400
played by Fan bingbing Um. She
enters the movie later in the film,
38
00:03:40.479 --> 00:03:47.560
but she is also a crucial member
of the team and also like a huge
39
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.080
Chinese star star. Also, I
don't know if you guys read about this,
40
00:03:54.240 --> 00:04:00.680
but apparently her star has fallen because
of tax evasion, Like this was
41
00:04:00.759 --> 00:04:05.039
like a comeback role for her because
she kind of been out of the scene
42
00:04:05.080 --> 00:04:11.759
for a while. We lived.
Also, Sebastian stands in there, yeah
43
00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:15.719
somewhere. Oh yeah, he's in
there too, But I certainly hope he's
44
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:19.079
not an operation in this quiz.
Yeah, I would think, but who
45
00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:25.360
Also, this quiz is from some
website called Stuffed Entertainment, So, um
46
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:31.000
quality of quiz, h we'll see. Yeah, it's got a lot of
47
00:04:31.079 --> 00:04:35.319
questions, so oh does it?
Yeah? It's okay, Jesus Christ,
48
00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:40.160
Okay, we're gonna do rapid We're
just gonna rapid fire. Don't talk about
49
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:43.800
it too much? Okay. Number
one? What is your strength? We've
50
00:04:43.800 --> 00:04:49.600
got dedication, discipline, creativity or
trustworthiness? Creativity, I'll say trustworthiness.
51
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:57.800
I'll say discipline, all right,
I think I will say, oh gosh,
52
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:01.000
I'll say trustworthiness. I think,
all right. Love the difference in
53
00:05:01.079 --> 00:05:05.399
answers. Yeah, what's your biggest
fear? Being alone without family or friends,
54
00:05:05.639 --> 00:05:11.079
not being successful financially. My greatest
fear is to have no more fear
55
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:17.480
or not believing in myself. Um, I'm gonna say not believing in myself.
56
00:05:17.560 --> 00:05:21.879
Yeah, I would agree. Yeah. Well, I'm gonna say my
57
00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:25.759
greatest fear is to have no more
fear, because I'm going to interpret that
58
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:33.120
to mean dying. Oh interesting,
okay, okay. What really makes you
59
00:05:33.160 --> 00:05:42.759
angry? Liars and lies, abusive
parents, screaming children, or bad manners.
60
00:05:40.839 --> 00:05:48.199
I I was going to say,
if you want children? Yeah,
61
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:55.720
where where's the all of the above? Right? Number four? What makes
62
00:05:55.759 --> 00:06:00.319
you laugh the most? Um sarcastic
jokes watching us say end up comedian on
63
00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:04.560
TV, specifically reading, reading a
comic book, or seeing someone make fun
64
00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:09.720
of someone else. That's terrible.
Wo seeing someone make fun of someone else
65
00:06:10.040 --> 00:06:15.680
a thousand person. I'm also sorry. Yeah, I'm gonna say a stand
66
00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:21.199
up comedian on TV TV only specifically, just on TV. If you would
67
00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:25.279
choose to do anything for a day, what would it be working? Playing
68
00:06:25.319 --> 00:06:30.199
games, traveling, doing sports?
What would I choose traveling? What would
69
00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:34.519
I be doing working? So,
yeah, but you can choose. If
70
00:06:34.519 --> 00:06:40.040
I'm choosing, I'm traveling for sure. I'll say that too. I love
71
00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:46.439
doing sports as an option doing Why
would you work if you could choose not
72
00:06:46.519 --> 00:06:49.199
to? Um, Mary, did
you answer that one? Playing games?
73
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:54.519
Okay? Would you rather ride a
bike, ride a horse, drive a
74
00:06:54.560 --> 00:07:02.720
car, or walk? Walk?
I say driving, write a bike?
75
00:07:02.920 --> 00:07:08.839
Driving? All right? You can
see my bike in the background, so
76
00:07:08.879 --> 00:07:15.639
I'm not lying. What type of
music do you listen? Do you listen?
77
00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:21.160
Yeah? Rock, pop, classical
or electronic pop rock. But I'm
78
00:07:21.160 --> 00:07:25.199
gonna go classical with this because I
do love classical and I listen to it
79
00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:28.759
when I write. So I'm gonna
say electronic because I do a lot of
80
00:07:28.920 --> 00:07:33.480
low fi hip hop. Oh look
at that, guys, we're gonna get
81
00:07:33.480 --> 00:07:36.319
the whole team. I think we're
really gonna do it. What would you
82
00:07:36.439 --> 00:07:41.480
rather do? Wash dishes, mow
the lawn? Clean the bathroom, vacuum
83
00:07:41.480 --> 00:07:45.560
the house. Vacuum. Vacuuming is
fun. Wash dishes. I'm gonna wash
84
00:07:45.560 --> 00:07:48.439
dishes because I like to cook and
bake. So I like to cook and
85
00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:50.720
bake. I don't like to wash
dishes. Yeah, well that's true.
86
00:07:53.360 --> 00:07:57.240
Out of all these chores, washing
dishes is my favorite. Yeah. Really,
87
00:07:57.319 --> 00:08:01.680
I don't like to vacuum. I
think that cleaning the bathroom brings me
88
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:09.000
the most satisfaction when I'm done,
Like, it feels nice. Yeah,
89
00:08:09.079 --> 00:08:13.240
but it's hard. Um, what's
your favorite food? This is okay?
90
00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:20.920
Can I just say milk is not
a food? Meat, pasta, milk,
91
00:08:20.199 --> 00:08:26.439
or vegetables. I'm going vegetables.
I'm going pasta. I'm going pasta.
92
00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:31.199
I'm also gonna go vegetables. What
have I just said? Milk and
93
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:35.600
just there's a picture of a grill
of a grilled cheese macaroni grilled cheese.
94
00:08:37.559 --> 00:08:45.679
Yeah, I know that's pasta and
milk. This one is wild. Yeah.
95
00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:48.000
Have you ever had a nickname?
What is it? Baby Face,
96
00:08:48.480 --> 00:08:54.519
Champ, lava, or Thunder.
I'm going with lava. Well wow,
97
00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:58.679
I will say. The one nickname
that I do have is from my uncle,
98
00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:03.039
and he calls me junior. Which
is that babyface or Champ? What
99
00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:09.960
would you champ? Yeah, I'm
People always think I'm younger than I am.
100
00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:15.240
So oh great we picked all four. Well I've never I've never had
101
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:24.399
a nickname really, but well now
your nickname is Um. Do you like
102
00:09:24.639 --> 00:09:30.000
or dislike surprises? I like surprises. I hate surprises only if they're from
103
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:35.759
close people or only from strangers.
Only from strangers, that's a murder surprise.
104
00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:43.840
Say only if they're from close I
ses I'm going close people. Okay,
105
00:09:45.879 --> 00:09:50.440
I also want to say they're the
most out of pocket stock photos.
106
00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:56.759
Yeah. Just this is definitely the
the uh weirdest quiz we've ever taken on
107
00:09:56.840 --> 00:10:01.559
here. Yep, Um, what
is your weakness? Discipline, patience,
108
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:05.720
determination, enthusiasm. Wouldn't it be
funny if I said discipline, I said
109
00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:09.879
that was my strength? Wait,
so does so enthusiasm? If that's your
110
00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:13.080
weakness, does that mean you lack
enthusiasm? Yeah? Yeah, I think
111
00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:16.240
so. Okay, this is what
I'm gonna say. I'm going to say
112
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:24.639
patience. I'm gonna go with discipline. I'm going patience. I guess what
113
00:10:24.679 --> 00:10:28.600
do you do in the evenings?
Is it friends? Play games? Watch,
114
00:10:28.679 --> 00:10:33.639
movies or read book, read book. I'm gonna say watch movies.
115
00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:37.320
Oh no, I'm gonna say visit
friends. I'm gonna be honest. It
116
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:43.240
is play games. I'll watch movies
because I read a book and so right,
117
00:10:43.320 --> 00:10:46.039
Yeah, we're trying to get the
whole team. We're trying to get
118
00:10:46.159 --> 00:10:52.360
small right, all right, this
is unfair because one option has three locations
119
00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:56.799
and one is not even a location. Um, where where is your ideal
120
00:10:56.799 --> 00:11:00.360
of vacation? I mean Budapest,
Vienna, and Prague. Absolutely, that's
121
00:11:00.679 --> 00:11:03.879
you get the most. Or you
could do Hawaii, Egypt or boat cruising.
122
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:07.120
If you're boat cruising, are you
making stops or are you just on
123
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:13.360
the boat? Are you cruising where? Yeah? Where the fuck are you?
124
00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:20.799
I'm gonna say Hawaii for food reasons. That's see. I got engaged
125
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:24.759
in Vienna. I feel like I
need to share all the time, So
126
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:30.840
I'm going with Vienna every time.
I'll say Egypt because it's close enough to
127
00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:33.320
Lebanon and that's where my ancestors are
from. So there, there you go.
128
00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:39.120
I'll make my way. Yeah,
boat cruising, I'll be brave and
129
00:11:39.519 --> 00:11:43.799
let us know where you end up. I don't want to be on a
130
00:11:43.879 --> 00:11:46.639
cruise ship, but I would like
to be on a small boat, a
131
00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:50.320
houseboat. Um, how many days
would you live on a deserted island?
132
00:11:50.879 --> 00:11:54.000
I would die the first day.
I would last several months, I would
133
00:11:54.039 --> 00:11:56.759
live several years. I would live
all my life. I would die the
134
00:11:56.840 --> 00:12:00.879
first day, first day. I'm
out. Why is there not like a
135
00:12:01.480 --> 00:12:03.559
few days or like a week?
Why do we go from a day to
136
00:12:03.639 --> 00:12:09.080
several months? Like that's pretty significant? It is. I'll say several months
137
00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:11.960
because I'd like to think I'm slightly
resourceful, but I'm really not. So
138
00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:18.279
yeah, I feel the same.
Um, it really depends. Yeah,
139
00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:20.399
I like what, yeah, what's
the situation on this island? So?
140
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:26.320
But again not clear? Not clear? Um, what would you do with
141
00:12:26.440 --> 00:12:31.519
infinite money? I would end poverty. I would buy expensive clothes. I
142
00:12:31.639 --> 00:12:37.480
would buy most beautiful cars, or
I wouldn't use them. It seems that
143
00:12:37.559 --> 00:12:41.399
the person making miss has gotten a
bit lazy as it's gone on. I
144
00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:46.320
mean there are letters missing. I
would end poverty right, Like it's endless
145
00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:50.519
money, So you could end poverty
and still buy clothes. Yeah that is
146
00:12:50.360 --> 00:13:00.759
first then yeah, okay poverty yep. Um seventeen, how would your friends
147
00:13:07.639 --> 00:13:11.759
yeah, like a my Space band
picture from like the late nineties. Um,
148
00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:16.519
funny, smart, loyal or strong? Wait? What was the question?
149
00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:20.039
How would your friends describe I don't
know how would you describe me?
150
00:13:20.120 --> 00:13:26.960
Lem say, funny for Emily or
for you for me? Okay, that's
151
00:13:28.039 --> 00:13:31.639
fair. I don't know how I
would describe you Emily smart? Okay,
152
00:13:31.840 --> 00:13:39.639
smart, I'll go loyal then okay, yeah, I'll also in between funny
153
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:46.200
and smart because I am both,
so also modest should be on. Yeah.
154
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:50.559
Um, what's your hobbies? Oh? Wait? Sorry? What are
155
00:13:50.600 --> 00:13:56.720
your hobbies? That was me uh
making the question grammatically doing sports, traveling,
156
00:13:56.120 --> 00:14:01.200
doing sports, cooking or reading books? Reading books? But I wish
157
00:14:01.240 --> 00:14:05.279
it was traveling. I'll say cooking
because most of my travels work related.
158
00:14:05.320 --> 00:14:16.360
Now, so Mary, book book, Bob, what is your favorite pet?
159
00:14:16.919 --> 00:14:20.440
We all know our answers for this. It's dog, cat, parrot,
160
00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:26.840
or fish. Yeah, I'm glad
you parrot? Right? We got
161
00:14:26.960 --> 00:14:30.159
three? Yeah, I'm glad we
have our dog reps. Since Susan is
162
00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:35.320
welcome, that would be Susan.
Yeah. Um. What form of public
163
00:14:35.399 --> 00:14:39.600
transport do you prefer? Air?
Train, boat, car? I do
164
00:14:39.799 --> 00:14:45.120
enjoy flying. I'm going to air
Okay, I really like train. See
165
00:14:45.159 --> 00:14:48.120
I don't get enough train experience to
know, so I there on a train
166
00:14:48.200 --> 00:14:54.919
like once in my life. Very
fun. Yeah, look at this favorite
167
00:14:56.039 --> 00:14:58.600
zoo animal. Oh my gosh,
this is a toughie. Favorite zoo animal
168
00:14:58.679 --> 00:15:03.200
is n Yes, I'm gonna say
you're half monkey, bear, bear,
169
00:15:03.799 --> 00:15:11.559
lion, lion, feel like a
lion? Also? Okay, they're just
170
00:15:11.879 --> 00:15:18.600
the most fascinating put. Yeah.
What do you like the most in school?
171
00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:22.679
Math? Language, sports, art, language, art, language,
172
00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:28.279
love, studying other I wish history
was on here though, because I know
173
00:15:28.679 --> 00:15:33.360
I wonder why you like history so
much. It's weird. If you had
174
00:15:33.399 --> 00:15:37.320
a warning label, wait, did
Mary did art? Okay, okay,
175
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:43.039
if you had a warning label,
what would your say? Stop drinking,
176
00:15:43.480 --> 00:15:48.399
stop working, stop lying, stop
fighting? Is this is this warning for
177
00:15:48.600 --> 00:15:52.120
other people or for feeling like it's
something that it's telling yourself, right,
178
00:15:52.279 --> 00:15:56.799
Yeah, that you need to stop
doing stop working? So working? Yeah,
179
00:15:58.279 --> 00:16:00.120
I worked too much, I would
say working, But I feel like
180
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:03.039
I should do something different. But
like, I don't feel like I do
181
00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:07.759
any of these other things excessively.
I don't think I do any of these
182
00:16:07.840 --> 00:16:14.960
things excessively. I do work excessively, So that's at least honest. I
183
00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:22.440
guess I'll go stop drinking. I
don't drink that much, but you know,
184
00:16:22.759 --> 00:16:27.240
I might as well stop that.
If you could join any past or
185
00:16:27.320 --> 00:16:32.000
current music group, which would you
want to join? Queen, the Beetles,
186
00:16:32.279 --> 00:16:36.559
Nirvana, or The Prodigy. I
don't know, but I'm picking them.
187
00:16:36.799 --> 00:16:40.080
Yeah, I'm gonna go with Queen
because that seems like a fun band
188
00:16:40.159 --> 00:16:44.120
to be in. Yeah, I'll
say Queen too. I'll be different all
189
00:16:44.120 --> 00:16:48.320
to the Beetles. Okay, great, love the Beat I love the Beetles.
190
00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:51.240
I'm just not the Queen. Does
seem more fun? I agree?
191
00:16:51.360 --> 00:16:55.120
Yeah. Yeah, you don't want
to you don't want to see up?
192
00:16:56.440 --> 00:17:00.759
Oh my god? How many languages
do you speak? One? Two,
193
00:17:00.840 --> 00:17:06.720
three, or four? Flu Yeah? Fluently? One? But yeah,
194
00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:08.880
I mean I think I think you
guys can answer if you have. UM.
195
00:17:10.599 --> 00:17:15.160
I've got like some Summit experience in
other languages, like a tiny little
196
00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:22.640
I've technically taken other language classes,
but could I speak it right? Like?
197
00:17:22.759 --> 00:17:25.880
I know enough Spanish. I understand
more Spanish than I speak. So
198
00:17:26.119 --> 00:17:30.279
I'll go to just because. Yeah, I'm gonna go. I'm a solid
199
00:17:30.359 --> 00:17:34.559
one. I took Latin in high
school. Look at you. Um,
200
00:17:34.680 --> 00:17:37.960
who knows you the best? Your
mom, your partner, your friend,
201
00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:45.160
nobody but yourself, my partner,
partner, probably my friend. Hi,
202
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:52.359
Marie, Marie, I'll go nobody
but yourself. I'll be mysterious. What
203
00:17:52.559 --> 00:17:56.440
possessions would you keep? Family photos, photos of you, books or a
204
00:17:56.519 --> 00:18:06.079
wedding ring, family emily photos.
Yeah, I'm gonna say, okay,
205
00:18:06.160 --> 00:18:07.960
yeah, I'll do that all this
next question, it's about to say photos
206
00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:14.359
of me, but then I decided
yeah, this is so insane. Wait
207
00:18:14.400 --> 00:18:15.960
okay, wait, Gabriella, did
you answer that one? Oh? Sorry,
208
00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:19.119
I was gonna uh yeah, I
did family photos? Okay, cool.
209
00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:25.119
This picture for what age do you
feel is the best is a picture
210
00:18:25.160 --> 00:18:29.920
of Sylvester Stallone and Michael B.
Jordan. Seventy one isn't even an option
211
00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:36.400
on here? Yeah? Yeah,
uh, an arrow pointing to Stallone with
212
00:18:36.519 --> 00:18:41.920
seventy one. They just took this
image off of another site. Oh yeah,
213
00:18:42.920 --> 00:18:47.279
I'm gonna go with thirty because it
says Michael B. Jordan is thirty
214
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:49.359
and I think that's not accurate anymore. But I'm just gonna take this to
215
00:18:49.480 --> 00:18:53.799
mean I think Michael B. Jordan
is best. Okay, I'm gonna say
216
00:18:53.839 --> 00:18:59.319
thirty because that's the closest age to
me. Although no, I'm gonna say
217
00:18:59.400 --> 00:19:03.400
forty because I'm not there yet,
so that means the best is yet to
218
00:19:03.480 --> 00:19:07.079
come. I'm gonna say forty because
I'm not forty yet, so that gives
219
00:19:07.119 --> 00:19:11.160
me something i'll look forward to.
That's exactly what I said. When you
220
00:19:11.279 --> 00:19:18.839
go virgos working together? What's your
favorite drink? Water, beer, wine
221
00:19:19.039 --> 00:19:30.319
or whiskey water water wine? What
next? Last question? What's the best
222
00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:33.039
way to start the day? Coffee, sports, laying in bed, eat
223
00:19:33.079 --> 00:19:37.279
a healthy breakfast? See does sports
mean like working out? But I feel
224
00:19:37.279 --> 00:19:42.640
like it does? But I need
coffee right exactly, it's a given.
225
00:19:44.039 --> 00:19:47.960
Okay, Oh my gosh, Okay, what everyone get? Oh my gosh,
226
00:19:49.880 --> 00:19:56.559
so did I? Well maybe that's
the only answer. I feel like
227
00:19:56.680 --> 00:20:02.839
maybe it is because we all had
different Yes, Len meching make this quiz.
228
00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:07.759
Probably he's like everyone is Len meiching. Well that was a less exciting
229
00:20:07.839 --> 00:20:11.920
than I thought. It might be
all of the work we put into it.
230
00:20:11.519 --> 00:20:15.960
But that's all right, that's okay. We can't be a little bit
231
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:23.160
Yeah, um, okay, So
now I'm going to say spoiler warning we're
232
00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:26.759
going to spoil this movie. We
will not be spoiling our interview. We
233
00:20:26.839 --> 00:20:30.759
won't be spoiling our interview. We
won't be spoiling Gabriella's book in our interview
234
00:20:30.839 --> 00:20:33.839
with her. So if you want
to hear that, you can just skip
235
00:20:33.920 --> 00:20:37.279
forward. We will have the timestamp
in the show notes. Otherwise, if
236
00:20:37.279 --> 00:20:41.160
you don't care about having this movie
spoiled, or if you've already seen it,
237
00:20:41.880 --> 00:20:47.599
listen on. So, first of
all, I need to talk about
238
00:20:48.039 --> 00:20:52.559
the plot of this movie. Uh, the central conceit of this film is
239
00:20:52.640 --> 00:20:57.279
that someone has invented a device contained
in what looks like an external hard drive
240
00:20:57.799 --> 00:21:04.519
that has the capability to shut down
everything. Huh, how do we what?
241
00:21:07.680 --> 00:21:11.000
Thoughts? I kind of I kind
of wanted a little more background on
242
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:15.960
that because like basically you just kind
of hack into this system and then it
243
00:21:15.039 --> 00:21:18.440
just kind of gets you anywhere and
does anything, and like I felt like
244
00:21:18.519 --> 00:21:22.359
they're needed to be more I don't
know if structures the right word, but
245
00:21:22.519 --> 00:21:26.240
you know, just like how does
this happen, what's the reason for it,
246
00:21:26.440 --> 00:21:30.240
and like what's the in like you
know the technology behind it, but
247
00:21:30.359 --> 00:21:33.559
it's basically you get it in the
world as your oyster and you can do
248
00:21:33.640 --> 00:21:37.480
whatever you want. You know,
Yeah, you can make planes fall out
249
00:21:37.480 --> 00:21:42.000
of the Yeah, exactly, it's
just okay, And like what purpose does
250
00:21:42.039 --> 00:21:45.839
it serve? And who wants it? And why just a re havoc or
251
00:21:47.240 --> 00:21:51.880
control people or what. Yeah,
they framed it in the in the first
252
00:21:51.920 --> 00:21:56.279
scene they framed it like, well, technology is the new drug or so.
253
00:21:56.480 --> 00:21:59.640
It didn't seem like they were kind
of selling it as like this is
254
00:21:59.720 --> 00:22:02.960
stuff, like this is gonna give
you this thrill to just like fuck with
255
00:22:03.119 --> 00:22:07.160
the world like that. Yeah,
that's a good point. Um. But
256
00:22:07.279 --> 00:22:11.319
then it's like essentially it's like the
power of having like nuclear weapons. True,
257
00:22:11.559 --> 00:22:15.920
that's good. You have so much
you can kill so many people at
258
00:22:15.960 --> 00:22:19.839
one time if you, for example, shut off all of the air traffic
259
00:22:19.920 --> 00:22:29.839
control towers or whatever. Yeah.
Um, And like also who I'm unclear
260
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:37.079
on did did did that teenager make
it? Where did he get? Yeah?
261
00:22:37.160 --> 00:22:42.079
Like where did he come from?
Some teenager in Colombia was like I
262
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:48.359
got this cool idea and it can't
be duplicated if anybody tries to duplicated it
263
00:22:48.480 --> 00:22:52.160
like shuts itself off automatically or something. And you know, it was just
264
00:22:52.680 --> 00:22:57.480
it was very easy. None of
it makes sense. Like you know,
265
00:23:00.039 --> 00:23:07.240
anytime you have something that is using
a technology or a thing that's like outside
266
00:23:07.279 --> 00:23:11.400
of the purview of what's real general
knowledge, I feel like you need to
267
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:15.279
explain it a little minute, right, And they were just like, I
268
00:23:15.359 --> 00:23:19.240
don't know, this thing is basically
magic, don't worry about it. Yeah.
269
00:23:19.359 --> 00:23:26.839
They really leaned on the hacker character
Kadija played by Lupida Niango to kind
270
00:23:26.880 --> 00:23:30.759
of like look through it and be
like, this is the most sophisticated coding
271
00:23:30.839 --> 00:23:34.799
I've ever seen, and then like
drop in a few like cody words that
272
00:23:34.920 --> 00:23:38.160
we don't know what they mean,
and then be like it's like what you
273
00:23:38.279 --> 00:23:42.079
call it, like a masterpiece or
something, Yeah, something like that.
274
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:49.400
Yeah. Anyway, it was very
silly, which is fine there. As
275
00:23:49.720 --> 00:23:56.359
we mentioned earlier, are a lot
of characters in this movie, and some
276
00:23:56.640 --> 00:24:02.480
get more time than others. But
who did we like the most? Who's
277
00:24:02.480 --> 00:24:07.680
your favorite character? Everyone? I
mean I like Lupetea and Niago usually,
278
00:24:08.039 --> 00:24:12.559
so she I was like predisposed to
like her. I think also she had
279
00:24:12.559 --> 00:24:17.160
the cool character and she was like
not as like unhinged as some of these
280
00:24:17.200 --> 00:24:21.440
other people, Right, she was
like the most level headed, and I
281
00:24:21.599 --> 00:24:25.519
agree, I did like her a
lot. I wanted a little more from
282
00:24:25.599 --> 00:24:26.960
Lynn Mishan, Like I thought she
should have been in it more because she
283
00:24:27.039 --> 00:24:34.720
was interesting, especially because her so
yeah, she was my favorite. But
284
00:24:34.920 --> 00:24:40.640
also I don't know that I knew
enough about anybody to like write like them
285
00:24:40.880 --> 00:24:45.400
or not like them. Yeah,
it was like the main character, ostensibly
286
00:24:45.680 --> 00:24:49.759
Jessica Chastain's character, it was like
you have no one and it's like we
287
00:24:49.880 --> 00:24:53.079
never know why, right, he
has no one, Like we never find
288
00:24:53.119 --> 00:24:59.079
out trust is right and we don't
know why. And yeah, I wanted
289
00:24:59.160 --> 00:25:03.960
more history and more or just arc
overall for everybody, right Yeah. Um.
290
00:25:06.359 --> 00:25:11.880
Also I thought this was interesting.
The Diane Krueger character was originally going
291
00:25:11.920 --> 00:25:17.480
to be played by Marian Coachyyard.
Oh and they hold on my buzzers going
292
00:25:17.519 --> 00:25:25.960
off makes sense because there's so much
in France, right, I'll think on
293
00:25:26.279 --> 00:25:30.720
Marian Coachyard. So that's sad for
me, you know what, I feel
294
00:25:30.759 --> 00:25:34.599
like, Maryan Coachyard has been in
a lot of really bad movies. Yeah,
295
00:25:34.599 --> 00:25:37.519
well, and it's I don't know
if she had like a conflicting filming
296
00:25:37.559 --> 00:25:41.039
schedule or something, but she was
like cast and then dropped out, but
297
00:25:41.160 --> 00:25:45.599
like there's like there were like press
photos where they went and like all took
298
00:25:45.839 --> 00:25:51.200
pictures and she's in them instead of
Diane Krueger, So it was like pretty
299
00:25:51.240 --> 00:25:56.319
far along in the press. I've
never heard of this movie before watching it.
300
00:25:57.279 --> 00:26:02.720
The only time I've heard of this
movie is on the show Keep It
301
00:26:02.839 --> 00:26:11.480
that I listened to um Ira mads
No. He like is always talking about
302
00:26:11.519 --> 00:26:15.359
how he loves this movie, but
kind of joking. But he's always like
303
00:26:17.440 --> 00:26:19.000
whenever Jessica Chastein comes up, he's
like, well, I got to talk
304
00:26:19.039 --> 00:26:22.079
to her about the three five five
sequel that we haven't gotten yet, like
305
00:26:22.400 --> 00:26:27.359
always like joking like that. So
it's like he clearly like enjoys it,
306
00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:32.519
but like knows it's trash, which
I think is like the best way to
307
00:26:32.599 --> 00:26:37.400
approach this movie is kind of like
it's really dumb. I actually had a
308
00:26:37.480 --> 00:26:41.359
lot of fun watching. I was
entertained right thing like, and I don't
309
00:26:41.640 --> 00:26:45.400
I'm not a big action movie girl, so it's like hard for me to
310
00:26:45.480 --> 00:26:52.960
watch something and not get super bored
um during action scenes. But I felt
311
00:26:52.079 --> 00:27:00.599
pretty uh you know, engaged throughout. I agree like the concept a lot
312
00:27:00.839 --> 00:27:07.440
more than the execution. You know, Yes, I agree. I think
313
00:27:07.480 --> 00:27:11.680
I had a miserable time because I
just watched it, like by myself.
314
00:27:11.519 --> 00:27:17.720
Yeah, I watched it by myself, but I did have some drugs.
315
00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:29.519
I was watching it Stone Cold Stone
with no wow. Watch. Well,
316
00:27:29.559 --> 00:27:34.599
I had a little kitten watching with
me too. In fact, that's true,
317
00:27:34.839 --> 00:27:40.720
that's so true. I take it
back, um, but yeah,
318
00:27:40.799 --> 00:27:44.759
I mean, I'm I would be
curious like how that character would have been
319
00:27:44.839 --> 00:27:47.680
different too, because like, she's
German. So I wonder if they had
320
00:27:47.720 --> 00:27:52.319
originally planned to just do a French
storyline. She was going to do the
321
00:27:52.400 --> 00:27:56.440
Marran Coatyard thing where she just like
always has a French accent no matter what
322
00:27:56.640 --> 00:28:00.319
role she's in, and you don't
question it. I guess she's French,
323
00:28:00.519 --> 00:28:04.839
Like, yeah, I think probably
because so much of it took place in
324
00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:11.799
Paris and there was a lot of
French spoken like that. He's probably a
325
00:28:11.880 --> 00:28:17.279
very friend and they were just like, well, she's German now because Diane
326
00:28:17.359 --> 00:28:22.720
Krueger gotta have a German accent.
Yep. Yeah, um. I actually
327
00:28:22.839 --> 00:28:30.680
did really like the relationship between Jessica
Chastain's character and Dian Kruger's character that was
328
00:28:30.759 --> 00:28:37.079
I think, like maybe the strongest
like uh character thing going on, and
329
00:28:37.200 --> 00:28:41.359
it wasn't like as strong as it
could have been, but like they were,
330
00:28:41.599 --> 00:28:44.799
they hated each other at first and
then they became friends and then I'm
331
00:28:44.839 --> 00:28:47.920
like, are they gonna fuck?
And I hope that if there's a sequel.
332
00:28:48.119 --> 00:28:49.839
I was very much reading it like
an enemy's to look Yeah, me
333
00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:56.200
too, right, I wanted a
tiny kiss, I know, and like
334
00:28:56.359 --> 00:29:02.279
the end when she's like awkwardly sang
by, that's like it was very like,
335
00:29:02.559 --> 00:29:03.599
I don't know, it kind of
read as romance to me, But
336
00:29:04.079 --> 00:29:11.960
I mean I definitely think they were
going for like we're too awkward loaners who
337
00:29:11.039 --> 00:29:15.240
don't know how to communicate, so
we're gonna say bye, really weird.
338
00:29:15.319 --> 00:29:18.680
Yeah, yeah, I agree that. I agree those characters had the most
339
00:29:18.920 --> 00:29:22.200
in common in a lot of ways. But then yeah, I definitely got
340
00:29:22.279 --> 00:29:26.000
to grow in that relationship, which
was good, and like you said,
341
00:29:26.039 --> 00:29:30.960
I think the strongest of the whole
group as a whole. Yeah, they
342
00:29:32.039 --> 00:29:33.920
did put Dian Kruger in a real
bad wig for a long time, though
343
00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:41.680
they did rough there were a number
of bad wigs wig sense. I also
344
00:29:41.759 --> 00:29:48.920
thought it was an interesting like thread
to have one of the characters be a
345
00:29:48.119 --> 00:29:55.359
psychologist who is there only because and
I did think that, like surprisingly it
346
00:29:55.559 --> 00:30:00.279
worked to have her be the only
person who could like you because arise,
347
00:30:00.319 --> 00:30:02.680
I'm like, why is she here? Right, But like they did come
348
00:30:02.759 --> 00:30:06.519
up with a good reason to be
there, yeah, that she has to
349
00:30:06.640 --> 00:30:10.599
have her specific thumb print on the
tracker or whatever. Yeah, it turns
350
00:30:10.640 --> 00:30:14.039
out she's really good at first,
right, Yeah, I wanted her to
351
00:30:14.160 --> 00:30:17.599
use her psychology background a little more
with that though, like start, I
352
00:30:17.680 --> 00:30:21.359
don't know how, but just like
analyzing the people and the situations and all
353
00:30:21.440 --> 00:30:23.519
of that. But otherwise she's just
kind of there, like waiting to go
354
00:30:23.640 --> 00:30:29.480
home, right, like crying everything
something happened, which yeah, that was
355
00:30:29.599 --> 00:30:33.759
like I was like, I like
the setup of this, but again the
356
00:30:33.319 --> 00:30:40.839
execution, like right, didn't fully
work. Yeah. Also I just think
357
00:30:40.880 --> 00:30:44.160
like the movie, well, we
can talk about this in my next point.
358
00:30:44.359 --> 00:30:48.799
So this is one of those movies
that has like a massive disparity between
359
00:30:48.799 --> 00:30:52.680
the audience and critics score on Round
Tomatoes. So the critics score is twenty
360
00:30:52.720 --> 00:31:00.279
four percent and the audience score is
eighty six percent. That is so a
361
00:31:00.319 --> 00:31:03.319
wide gap. So I have taken
some of the negative critic reviews that I
362
00:31:03.799 --> 00:31:08.640
thought were kind of funny. I
love that. Kim Early Jones at the
363
00:31:08.640 --> 00:31:14.839
Austin Chronicle said, doggably mediocre action
or the three to five five is the
364
00:31:14.920 --> 00:31:18.880
cinematic equivalent of gathering together Formula one's
finest drivers and tossing them the keys to
365
00:31:19.039 --> 00:31:23.200
a eugo. I don't know what
a ugo is, but I assume it
366
00:31:23.319 --> 00:31:30.359
means a shitty car. Alison Willemore
for Vulture wrote, It's dullness somehow feels
367
00:31:30.400 --> 00:31:33.640
worse than grand failure, as though
its aims were only to prove that a
368
00:31:33.720 --> 00:31:37.240
bunch of the most famous women on
earth can come together to make an action
369
00:31:37.319 --> 00:31:42.279
film just as uninspired as and boring
as men can. And for The New
370
00:31:42.359 --> 00:31:47.359
York Times, this is my favorite. Amy Nicholson wrote, it's flatfooted,
371
00:31:47.400 --> 00:31:51.319
even when the setups yearned to be
playful, like a pursuit that detours into
372
00:31:51.359 --> 00:31:56.240
a men only bathhouse, or surreal
moment in an undercover sequence when Chastain rips
373
00:31:56.279 --> 00:32:01.319
off her red wig disguise to reveal
her own identical red hair. Um,
374
00:32:01.880 --> 00:32:04.920
yeah, when that happened, I
was like, did you have like short
375
00:32:04.960 --> 00:32:08.240
hair or something. No, right, it's just red hair pinned down underneath
376
00:32:08.279 --> 00:32:15.359
a red wig. Um confusing.
But anyway, why what's going on with
377
00:32:15.519 --> 00:32:21.200
this? Like wild disparity? And
also like is it so bad to have
378
00:32:21.319 --> 00:32:24.319
a stupid movie that stars women?
Like there are so many of these movies
379
00:32:24.359 --> 00:32:30.079
getting pumped out at like every day
starring men, like shitty action movies.
380
00:32:30.440 --> 00:32:34.839
Why not? Yeah, that's probably
why the audience has enjoyed it because it
381
00:32:34.960 --> 00:32:37.799
is about women in a good action
or not good action, but you know,
382
00:32:37.880 --> 00:32:43.240
but in an action an action forward
movie, and it's different and they're
383
00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:46.960
you know, not wallflowers. They're
getting getting things done, and it's just
384
00:32:47.160 --> 00:32:52.920
kind of camp being fun. Yeah. And I feel like movies like this's
385
00:32:52.960 --> 00:32:57.079
get made all the time by men, right and we don't yeah, I
386
00:32:57.119 --> 00:32:59.440
don't know, we don't shoot on
them this back. Yeah, Like and
387
00:32:59.640 --> 00:33:01.759
I do like the same thing happened
with the new Charlie's Angels movie. Like
388
00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:05.640
everyone talks about how like shitty that
movie was, but like, okay,
389
00:33:05.759 --> 00:33:09.000
I like Loki really enjoyed it.
Yeah, it was just like a fun
390
00:33:09.079 --> 00:33:13.400
time And I I don't know,
like, let women have done movies too,
391
00:33:13.599 --> 00:33:16.000
right, that's right? And I
think again, like I thought this
392
00:33:16.200 --> 00:33:20.240
was fun. It also like what
people kept calling it, like a slog
393
00:33:20.400 --> 00:33:22.720
I like it's two hours, Like
there are movies way rather than this that
394
00:33:22.799 --> 00:33:28.519
are that have way less going on, right, And it was like easy
395
00:33:28.599 --> 00:33:32.279
to follow for the most part,
which I also had. It was a
396
00:33:32.359 --> 00:33:36.440
good cast too, Like it wasn't
a problem of the cast, it was
397
00:33:36.519 --> 00:33:40.400
more just the story and the script
was pretty bad. Yeah yeah, yeah,
398
00:33:40.440 --> 00:33:44.839
I like Okay. One part that
really stuck out to me is like
399
00:33:44.880 --> 00:33:47.839
they're all sitting around having drinks,
like celebrating their success, and like I
400
00:33:47.920 --> 00:33:52.400
think it's Jessica Jeff Daine is telling
the story about the guy who like hid
401
00:33:52.519 --> 00:33:57.599
something, yeah, and she's she's
like he put it in a secure place
402
00:33:57.720 --> 00:33:59.839
and kind of nods, and I'm
like, okay, yeah, we understand
403
00:34:00.119 --> 00:34:01.480
get it. But then she's like
it was in his butt. I'm like,
404
00:34:01.640 --> 00:34:06.440
we know, we got that.
Yeah it was Laputa and Yngo.
405
00:34:06.519 --> 00:34:09.039
Okay, right. I was like, this was a moment where like,
406
00:34:09.679 --> 00:34:14.400
you didn't, you didn't, we
got it. You didn't. Yeah,
407
00:34:15.079 --> 00:34:17.079
you could have trusted the audience to
be smart enough. You knew we were
408
00:34:17.119 --> 00:34:21.199
talking about the butt before you said
the butt. You don't have to write
409
00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:24.199
right. And I just feel like
there were a lot of moments like that
410
00:34:24.360 --> 00:34:29.360
where it was like you could have
stopped to stop the dialogue a couple of
411
00:34:29.480 --> 00:34:36.079
lines earlier and just like let people
figure. And again with the calling her
412
00:34:36.239 --> 00:34:39.719
mace every five like the number of
people used her name in a sentence,
413
00:34:39.800 --> 00:34:45.360
I was just like, please go
down like that. You know how we
414
00:34:45.440 --> 00:34:47.760
feel about that. That's like the
number one mark of bad writing is everyone
415
00:34:47.920 --> 00:34:52.599
using each other's names all the time. Times it was out of control.
416
00:34:53.159 --> 00:34:58.559
Um, and it's it feels even
more obvious when you see it on screen
417
00:34:58.599 --> 00:35:00.400
because you would think, like if
it's on the page and then people are
418
00:35:00.519 --> 00:35:05.639
like saying it aloud, They're like, it feels unnatural to be saying someone's
419
00:35:05.719 --> 00:35:08.119
name this many times. But no, they were like, stick to the
420
00:35:08.199 --> 00:35:15.760
script exactly as it's written. Would
you guys watch a sequel? Sure?
421
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:20.239
Why not? I'd watch it?
Yeah? Why not? I mean I
422
00:35:20.920 --> 00:35:23.000
yes, keep going. I was
just like, you know, would I
423
00:35:23.159 --> 00:35:28.559
like be in line like Opening Day? Probably not, but like Chilling at
424
00:35:28.599 --> 00:35:34.159
Home on Netflix, absolutely right.
What they need to do is lean hard
425
00:35:34.360 --> 00:35:37.360
into camp. They need to go
really go for it. And I feel
426
00:35:37.360 --> 00:35:40.519
like this is a perfect example of
a movie where, like, you know
427
00:35:40.639 --> 00:35:44.400
how there are those movies where like
the first one is like it and then
428
00:35:44.440 --> 00:35:47.440
the second one is like really funny
and good because they like realized what they
429
00:35:47.519 --> 00:35:52.239
had and they were like, okay, do making this a good movie is
430
00:35:52.320 --> 00:35:55.800
not gonna happen, so we're gonna
go. It's kind of like them like
431
00:35:57.039 --> 00:36:00.239
Venom. I don't know. The
first Venom was also pretty camp, to
432
00:36:00.239 --> 00:36:08.639
be honest, but like the second
one exactly magic Mike exxel. But yeah,
433
00:36:08.760 --> 00:36:13.199
like to do a sequel that if
you just like lean a little harder.
434
00:36:13.360 --> 00:36:16.639
Like in the first twenty minutes of
this movie, um, we see
435
00:36:16.960 --> 00:36:22.880
Jessica Chastain and Sebastian Stan fuck,
and then immediately afterwards, Jessica Chastain is
436
00:36:23.000 --> 00:36:30.679
chasing barefoot through the streets of Paris
Diane Krueger on a motorcycle. Okay,
437
00:36:30.360 --> 00:36:36.400
and then she goes underground and thinks
that she's behind a train, but then
438
00:36:36.480 --> 00:36:38.400
it turns out that Diane Kruger is
on the train, and she flicks her
439
00:36:38.440 --> 00:36:43.920
off as the train runs away.
Okay, Like that was the funniest,
440
00:36:44.199 --> 00:36:50.400
stupidest thing I've ever seen watching her, Like run on foot after a motorcycle.
441
00:36:50.880 --> 00:36:53.800
It I can't even describe. Of
course, this was up. Yes,
442
00:36:54.800 --> 00:37:00.760
it's like this is actually feasible somehow. And I was again I did
443
00:37:00.800 --> 00:37:05.320
not question it. While I was
I did have some but well but when
444
00:37:05.360 --> 00:37:07.880
I say drugs, I smoked some
weed. Okay, it's legal, it's
445
00:37:07.920 --> 00:37:14.840
fine. Um. I was watching
this and that was like actually being high
446
00:37:14.840 --> 00:37:17.519
because I had just started watching the
movie and I was like, what is
447
00:37:17.639 --> 00:37:22.400
this. This is the craziest thing
I've ever seen. Um, And I
448
00:37:22.519 --> 00:37:27.079
just I want that energy for the
full run time. You know, I
449
00:37:27.159 --> 00:37:30.440
want whatever biscuits Penelope is making.
I know, I was about I say,
450
00:37:30.599 --> 00:37:35.519
it's Saturday, Penelope, It's it's
time to take off of work to
451
00:37:35.760 --> 00:37:39.840
raise these kittens out here. Don't
don't run into the biscuit factory right away
452
00:37:39.880 --> 00:37:47.000
on a Saturday morning. Take the
day off. I say about this movie,
453
00:37:47.960 --> 00:37:53.400
I don't think that there was anything
fundamentally wrong with it, except for
454
00:37:53.559 --> 00:37:59.800
like the stuff we've talked about,
Like it's fun. It's a fun movie.
455
00:38:00.360 --> 00:38:04.400
If you already like this type of
movie, yeah, yeah, but
456
00:38:04.679 --> 00:38:07.800
I don't. Yeah, yeah,
I think, and I like, I
457
00:38:07.880 --> 00:38:10.760
don't regret watching it. I'm not
like, oh, I can't believe you
458
00:38:10.840 --> 00:38:15.440
know, but I was just like, if I had to choose, I
459
00:38:15.559 --> 00:38:21.559
don't know that I would have,
Like I think, for me, my
460
00:38:21.719 --> 00:38:25.280
brain the second I see a gunfight
start to happen, I'm just yeah,
461
00:38:25.679 --> 00:38:30.679
shut down, or like when there's
a chase, shut down. But this
462
00:38:30.840 --> 00:38:35.440
is a whole genre of movies that
I think you're right, like women don't
463
00:38:35.519 --> 00:38:38.920
get to have a lot of the
time, like these sort of fun action
464
00:38:39.079 --> 00:38:44.880
movies. Because I was thinking like
it reminded me a lot of Mission Impossible
465
00:38:45.440 --> 00:38:50.599
in that lots of running, well, it was of shooting. It was
466
00:38:51.039 --> 00:38:58.400
a little infiltration, a female led
Mission Impossible. I don't know if you
467
00:38:58.480 --> 00:39:05.719
know this about my husband, Tied, but he loves Mission Impossible so much.
468
00:39:07.199 --> 00:39:13.159
I like the Henry Cavill Twitter account
that he made. He has like
469
00:39:13.400 --> 00:39:16.119
trauma bonded to those movies. And
so when I watched the three five five,
470
00:39:16.519 --> 00:39:20.360
I was like, I'm sad I
didn't watch it with you, because
471
00:39:20.440 --> 00:39:22.280
I think you would have actually really
liked it. Yeah, I think he
472
00:39:22.320 --> 00:39:25.719
would if I feel like, if
you liked Mission Impossible, you should like
473
00:39:25.880 --> 00:39:30.880
this movie. Yeah. But my
thing is like I don't like Mission impossible
474
00:39:30.400 --> 00:39:37.639
unless there is a very big man
in a very tiny suit cocking his fists.
475
00:39:37.760 --> 00:39:42.400
I mean, Henry Cavill, in
my opinion, makes everything better.
476
00:39:43.400 --> 00:39:47.800
Been a fan sinstitutors. This is
well documented, so I would say,
477
00:39:47.880 --> 00:39:52.920
like, if we could have gotten
Henry Cavill instead of Sebastian Stan, would
478
00:39:52.920 --> 00:39:55.960
I have been sad? No?
True. I Also the second I see
479
00:39:57.000 --> 00:40:00.920
Sebastian Stan, I'm like, well
he seeks really bad. Yeah, we
480
00:40:00.039 --> 00:40:04.000
didn't talk about that yet, Like, yeah, I'm not a fan.
481
00:40:04.719 --> 00:40:08.039
Raise your hand if you believe Sebastian
stand really died at the beginning of the
482
00:40:08.119 --> 00:40:15.239
movie. Nobody is raising it right, And that was never really like what
483
00:40:15.719 --> 00:40:20.960
was that about? What was the
point? And I never really understood like
484
00:40:21.199 --> 00:40:24.440
why he switched side? Yes,
this, like what what was in it
485
00:40:24.519 --> 00:40:29.800
for him? Not money? Money? Like I guess, like is that
486
00:40:29.960 --> 00:40:32.440
it? Like is that a good
enough of reason to like betray this friend
487
00:40:32.480 --> 00:40:37.280
he's supposedly been pining away for for
so long and now he's like up bye.
488
00:40:37.519 --> 00:40:40.679
Yeah. It was like they wanted
to do twist on twist like he's
489
00:40:40.800 --> 00:40:44.880
dead. Bet you didn't see that
coming? Oh, just kidding him alive?
490
00:40:44.960 --> 00:40:46.360
Bet you didn't see that coming.
And he's a trader. Bet you
491
00:40:46.440 --> 00:40:50.159
didn't see that coming, right,
And it's like I come back. He's
492
00:40:50.239 --> 00:40:52.440
back with the government now, bet
you didn't see that coming. But he's
493
00:40:52.480 --> 00:40:57.599
still evil, Like like you're not
going to pass Sebastian Stand and then kill
494
00:40:57.719 --> 00:41:00.679
him off in minute twenty Yeah,
like you right, cast like an unnamed
495
00:41:00.760 --> 00:41:06.800
guy. Maybe I would have believed
it, but right also like, okay,
496
00:41:07.079 --> 00:41:09.880
it didn't make sense that he went
evil, but I don't know.
497
00:41:09.960 --> 00:41:14.280
Watching the movie, I was like, this is Sebastian Stand. I believe
498
00:41:14.400 --> 00:41:20.480
Murder basics what he does from Gossip
Girl, um the original villain that he
499
00:41:20.639 --> 00:41:23.639
played, and he carries on to
this day being evil all the time.
500
00:41:23.840 --> 00:41:28.800
So at the end, I wanted
the women to like get more direct revenge
501
00:41:28.880 --> 00:41:30.880
on him, like individually, because
like he killed all their loved ones for
502
00:41:31.039 --> 00:41:36.280
like though I felt so bad for
Lubida, she's gonna be back for dinner,
503
00:41:36.440 --> 00:41:38.960
I know, yes, my question, and like they're just like,
504
00:41:39.039 --> 00:41:42.360
oh, we're just gonna let you
go get locked up, and like he's
505
00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:46.039
gonna get out not like no it
was all ones, that's right, he
506
00:41:46.119 --> 00:41:51.960
deserved. Yeah, they probably want
to have him there in case there's a
507
00:41:52.039 --> 00:41:55.440
sequel and they can get him to
like prison break or something. That's exactly
508
00:41:55.480 --> 00:42:00.840
what I'm expecting. Okay, we
are prised out right now. Yeah?
509
00:42:00.920 --> 00:42:06.199
Were they gonna lock him up?
This is my question? We're they gonna
510
00:42:06.199 --> 00:42:07.119
lock him up? Because she was
like, I know people, and I'm
511
00:42:07.159 --> 00:42:10.440
gonna send you away to get locked
up, and like, clearly it's not
512
00:42:10.559 --> 00:42:14.559
an official like government, And I'm
like, okay, well, are we
513
00:42:14.639 --> 00:42:16.960
just gonna like old boy him and
put him in a hotel room and not
514
00:42:17.159 --> 00:42:21.199
let him leave? Like what is
this is very vague? Yeah, and
515
00:42:21.280 --> 00:42:27.440
then that's like island prison. Yeah, like very sounds read. Yeah,
516
00:42:28.239 --> 00:42:30.639
I mean it was kind of fun
that they were like, oh, we
517
00:42:30.760 --> 00:42:35.280
can't trust any of our governments.
It turns out because it is like at
518
00:42:35.320 --> 00:42:37.719
the beginning when you're seeing someone who's
like, oh, I'm you know,
519
00:42:38.199 --> 00:42:42.719
what is it Cia? That she
was like, am I supposed to like
520
00:42:43.000 --> 00:42:46.760
the CIA? Turns out no,
And I'm a fan of that. So
521
00:42:49.079 --> 00:42:53.599
yeah, I was surprised Marx was
bad. I was like, oh,
522
00:42:53.679 --> 00:43:00.480
but he seemed like nice and fatherly. Yeah that's true. Yeah, did
523
00:43:00.599 --> 00:43:05.440
anyone else have any thoughts before we
rate the Sun? Move on. I'm
524
00:43:05.480 --> 00:43:08.119
trying to think if we've missed out
on any of the big plot points or
525
00:43:08.159 --> 00:43:15.920
anything. Well, I covered the
homoerotic tension, so and that's so.
526
00:43:16.639 --> 00:43:20.679
Yeah, I think we had everything. I would say it okay, like
527
00:43:20.880 --> 00:43:27.039
an action movie. Yeah, just
to recap for the sequel, Sebastian Stand
528
00:43:27.199 --> 00:43:31.519
is going to break out of prison. Diane Krueger and um Jessica Chastain are
529
00:43:31.599 --> 00:43:36.280
going to start a romance. They
are going to take revenge on Sebastian Stand
530
00:43:36.360 --> 00:43:42.559
by killing all of his loved ones
while he watches Dark Though. It's really
531
00:43:42.639 --> 00:43:46.079
hard to root for somebody after that. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
532
00:43:47.559 --> 00:43:52.000
Well we'll figure that out. We'll
figure that maybe they enlist their loved ones
533
00:43:52.320 --> 00:43:59.360
to help them get I think the
plot twist Lapido and Yongo's husband is still
534
00:43:59.400 --> 00:44:02.639
alive. Has that really upset me? Yeah? That just sounds unnecessarily cruel,
535
00:44:04.119 --> 00:44:07.719
like for the right to do that, Like, yeah, just right,
536
00:44:07.760 --> 00:44:10.400
because otherwise it's like there was action, but it was all just kind
537
00:44:10.440 --> 00:44:13.800
of light and fun and funny,
and then it's like, oh, now
538
00:44:13.840 --> 00:44:16.639
we're going to start killing all these
very innocent people that are important to you,
539
00:44:16.760 --> 00:44:20.039
and it's like whoa where did this
come from? Right? Like,
540
00:44:20.199 --> 00:44:24.920
sure, kill off the Diane Krueger's
like boss slash dad figure or whatever.
541
00:44:25.320 --> 00:44:30.880
That's right, but don't start killing
off people's uninvolved, like partners, right
542
00:44:30.360 --> 00:44:34.800
exactly because he was at least involved
in the circumstances. But yeah, like
543
00:44:34.840 --> 00:44:37.400
you said, all the partners and
families like they have no idea what's going
544
00:44:37.480 --> 00:44:43.480
on? Yeah, yeah, Lee
Fang's dad, you know what's going on.
545
00:44:43.840 --> 00:44:46.840
Yeah he was there, yeah,
true, But also we didn't have
546
00:44:46.960 --> 00:44:50.119
time to know him, so like
when he got shot, it was just
547
00:44:50.199 --> 00:44:52.360
like whoa shock, but not like, oh, I'm upset. It was
548
00:44:52.400 --> 00:44:55.440
also really funny how you like gathered
them all and had all the screens and
549
00:44:55.519 --> 00:45:00.679
he's like, um, and none
for you, Mace, because you have
550
00:45:00.800 --> 00:45:07.360
no friends, no loved ones.
Oh gosh. I did like when um,
551
00:45:10.599 --> 00:45:21.320
what's her name, Lee Fa lend
me, lend me Shang Fan being
552
00:45:21.360 --> 00:45:24.920
bang. I loved when she was
like, man, stand up and he
553
00:45:25.039 --> 00:45:31.199
said no, you may not stay. Yeah, clearly not. Yeah.
554
00:45:32.440 --> 00:45:37.679
Also, like all of the remote
hacking they did, which I guess,
555
00:45:37.719 --> 00:45:40.480
if we're going to believe that this
data thing can do anything, why not
556
00:45:40.639 --> 00:45:44.320
believe in all this other stuff,
But I just kept thinking, like,
557
00:45:45.119 --> 00:45:49.000
I don't think this is possible.
It's always so funny to think about,
558
00:45:49.079 --> 00:45:52.599
like what the actors are thinking in
their heads is they're just like saying nonsense,
559
00:45:52.800 --> 00:45:58.719
like make this sound believable, and
she's like until calibrated later. Yeah,
560
00:46:00.440 --> 00:46:05.880
so silly. Yeah, Um,
okay, did you guys write this?
561
00:46:06.119 --> 00:46:09.039
I'm gonna probably give it three stars. Yeah. Um, I'm gonna
562
00:46:09.079 --> 00:46:15.000
say it's too that I actually watched
two spymovies, women's spy movies this week
563
00:46:15.000 --> 00:46:23.440
because I also watched Ghosted whoa wow, the Chris Evans uh oh on a
564
00:46:23.599 --> 00:46:30.840
day. Yeah, it was really
bad, and so I would say in
565
00:46:30.000 --> 00:46:38.320
comparison, this looked like an Oscar
winning film. Um, but yeah,
566
00:46:38.360 --> 00:46:42.400
I think I will give this one
three stars as well. It was a
567
00:46:42.480 --> 00:46:45.679
fun time. Will I watch it
again? No? Will I forget about
568
00:46:45.719 --> 00:46:49.679
it? Probably? But would I
watched a sequel? Sure? Same?
569
00:46:50.159 --> 00:46:54.239
Yeah, I agree three stars for
those reasons. I will say two stars
570
00:46:54.320 --> 00:47:00.159
just because it's not my gena yeah, but like for it not being something
571
00:47:00.199 --> 00:47:05.480
I would normally watch, it could
have been worse. I enjoy a good
572
00:47:05.519 --> 00:47:07.679
spy movie, Like I'm not a
fan of Mission Impossible, but I do
573
00:47:07.920 --> 00:47:12.320
enjoy James Bond and like, like
I said, I love Charlie's Angels.
574
00:47:12.400 --> 00:47:16.440
Like Charlie is like totally my shit. Forever chasing what I felt when I
575
00:47:16.559 --> 00:47:23.920
watched Spy also with Melissa McCarthy,
which is a completely different kind of movie.
576
00:47:24.440 --> 00:47:28.639
It's a good one. It's good. That's the direct movie could go.
577
00:47:29.039 --> 00:47:31.199
Yeah, yeah it is. I
mean, I'm forever chasing what I
578
00:47:31.280 --> 00:47:37.920
felt when I first watched Charlie's Angels
two thousands. Yeah, that was so
579
00:47:38.239 --> 00:47:59.280
good for different child. That feeling
is what I when I seek angree Um.
580
00:48:00.079 --> 00:48:04.559
Okay, moving on to the even
more fun part of the episode,
581
00:48:04.639 --> 00:48:08.920
what we all really highlight. Yeah, Gabriella, thank you so much for
582
00:48:09.079 --> 00:48:15.599
joining us for this very serious interview
portion of the episode. Why don't you
583
00:48:15.760 --> 00:48:19.679
tell us a little bit about your
book, Daughters of Victory? Okay,
584
00:48:19.920 --> 00:48:23.719
yes, So, Daughters of Victory
is a historical novel. It's dual timeline
585
00:48:23.719 --> 00:48:28.400
and dual point of view. It
takes place between the Russian Revolution and the
586
00:48:28.480 --> 00:48:31.440
Soviet Union during World War two,
and so in the first storyline, during
587
00:48:31.480 --> 00:48:36.760
the Revolution, you meet a young
woman named Sveetlana who is a former aristocrat
588
00:48:36.800 --> 00:48:40.519
who has left her family to go
join the revolutionary cause. So she joins
589
00:48:40.519 --> 00:48:45.320
a party called the Social Revolutionary Party
that is anti Bolshevik and anti imperialist,
590
00:48:45.519 --> 00:48:52.480
and there is a Bolshevik assassin that
is on the loose screaking havoc on everyone,
591
00:48:52.719 --> 00:48:55.000
and the Bolsheviks are kind of gaining
a lot of power and a lot
592
00:48:55.039 --> 00:49:00.800
of momentum in nineteen seventeen when the
story picks up, and so she is
593
00:49:00.840 --> 00:49:05.280
with her party, joining this cause. That turns out this assassin has murdered
594
00:49:05.320 --> 00:49:09.480
her uncle. So she wants revenge
and wants to kill this person that all
595
00:49:09.519 --> 00:49:15.440
I know about her she's a woman, and ultimately lead her party to victory.
596
00:49:15.599 --> 00:49:20.119
And then we jump forward to the
forties when the Germans invade the Soviet
597
00:49:20.239 --> 00:49:24.239
Union and us Fetlana lives in a
little remote village and her granddaughter Mila comes
598
00:49:24.280 --> 00:49:29.400
to stay with her for safety ahead
of the invasion, and then the Nazis
599
00:49:29.480 --> 00:49:32.400
end up invading that village as well, and Niela wants to join the resistance
600
00:49:32.480 --> 00:49:37.800
against them. She knows nothing of
her grandmother's past and or why her grandmother
601
00:49:38.000 --> 00:49:44.480
is very against her doing this,
and so she does join the resistance behind
602
00:49:44.519 --> 00:49:50.280
her grandmother's back and ends up stirring
up a lot of drama from Sfetlana's pass.
603
00:49:50.320 --> 00:49:52.599
So you move back and forth between
the stories to find out what happened
604
00:49:53.039 --> 00:49:58.119
in the past and how it's informing
the present and then ultimately how things are
605
00:49:58.159 --> 00:50:00.400
going to go down for both of
them. I'm want to say, she's
606
00:50:00.519 --> 00:50:07.360
literally stirring up drama. Yeah,
very much, so very much. So
607
00:50:07.280 --> 00:50:10.800
Yeah, I have to ask,
like what kind of because I was reading
608
00:50:12.079 --> 00:50:15.480
your I read the section at the
back that kind of went through some of
609
00:50:15.559 --> 00:50:20.559
your historical search, but I want
to hear about your poison research, okay,
610
00:50:20.800 --> 00:50:24.679
So it was a lot of fun. So I found this book called
611
00:50:24.719 --> 00:50:29.679
as for Arsenic that takes you through
all of Agatha Christie's books where she uses
612
00:50:29.760 --> 00:50:34.719
poison and talks through like the actual
poison and the scientific background and how it
613
00:50:34.800 --> 00:50:37.440
would affect the human body, and
like how well Christie did it Basically because
614
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:43.400
Christie had a background in pharmacy,
I believe, so that's how she was
615
00:50:43.480 --> 00:50:47.960
able to use that as a very
you know, useful weapon for her characters
616
00:50:49.039 --> 00:50:52.280
in a very believable way. And
so that helped me a lot with the
617
00:50:52.800 --> 00:50:58.960
chemical poisons that Mila uses. But
then living on a farm in this remote
618
00:50:59.039 --> 00:51:01.519
region where there's forest everywhere got me
thinking, there's got to be lots of
619
00:51:01.559 --> 00:51:06.360
poison in those woods, and that
would be a lot of fun. And
620
00:51:06.440 --> 00:51:09.840
then it turns out foraging for mushrooms
is actually very prominent in Eastern European culture,
621
00:51:10.320 --> 00:51:14.119
so it was just very fitting for
something that the characters would do,
622
00:51:14.760 --> 00:51:17.360
not only for things I could actually
eat, but um for in her case,
623
00:51:17.519 --> 00:51:22.119
for poison. So I thought that
would be a lot of fun if
624
00:51:22.159 --> 00:51:25.679
I had her learn about poisons also
that her natural like you know, berries
625
00:51:25.800 --> 00:51:30.880
and mushrooms and those sorts of things. So I did a lot of research
626
00:51:30.960 --> 00:51:34.280
there, and then I have a
friend who was very who studied that kind
627
00:51:34.280 --> 00:51:36.880
of stuff in school, so I
had a lot of help from her in
628
00:51:37.079 --> 00:51:39.960
terms of like making sure that,
you know, the mushrooms I was thinking
629
00:51:40.079 --> 00:51:44.800
would be growing during this season at
this time in this area were plausible,
630
00:51:44.880 --> 00:51:47.079
and so she was really helpful in
that regard. But it was just a
631
00:51:47.119 --> 00:51:52.920
lot of fun for me to do
and just made it feel just very I
632
00:51:52.960 --> 00:51:55.039
don't know if chaotics the right word, but just very true to who Mila
633
00:51:55.280 --> 00:52:00.679
was, just because it's just such
a weird, crazy weapon, and I
634
00:52:00.800 --> 00:52:04.639
just thought it was a lot more
fun than chemical poison because she's it's right
635
00:52:04.679 --> 00:52:07.800
there in front of you and you
just have no idea for sure walking around
636
00:52:07.800 --> 00:52:14.119
with pockets full of mushrooms. Yeah, exactly, just all the time.
637
00:52:15.480 --> 00:52:21.760
So I know that. I'm just
like so fascinated by their research stuff like
638
00:52:22.000 --> 00:52:27.599
that always interesting because like I feel
like, and I like, anytime I
639
00:52:27.679 --> 00:52:30.039
interview someone about something historical, I
always say this, but like I feel
640
00:52:30.119 --> 00:52:35.559
like if I were researching for a
book, I would have such a hard
641
00:52:35.599 --> 00:52:40.440
time putting down the research and like
actually like writing. Yeah. So at
642
00:52:40.519 --> 00:52:45.679
one point, yeah, I mean
you yourself like, Okay, I know
643
00:52:45.960 --> 00:52:50.519
enough to write this book, Like, let's put it away, Like how
644
00:52:50.559 --> 00:52:52.280
do you do that? Yeah?
Yeah, you do have to. Honestly,
645
00:52:52.360 --> 00:52:54.920
for me, I get to the
point where I am so excited to
646
00:52:54.960 --> 00:52:59.800
write the book because I know the
character so much now because of all this
647
00:53:00.000 --> 00:53:01.800
prep work and all this research that
that makes it easy for me to step
648
00:53:01.840 --> 00:53:07.199
away from the research because I've got
the story and I feel like you just
649
00:53:07.280 --> 00:53:08.800
kind of reach a point where you
feel like you have enough, you know
650
00:53:09.119 --> 00:53:14.159
enough, it's informed the story enough
and the characters enough. And now this
651
00:53:14.320 --> 00:53:17.039
one was difficult. It was harder
than my first one in terms of the
652
00:53:17.159 --> 00:53:20.920
kinds of research I had to do, And it was just difficult to find
653
00:53:21.079 --> 00:53:23.960
the research I needed because there's just
less of it out there. And then
654
00:53:24.000 --> 00:53:30.480
the characters were just very complicated and
very different from anything I've done before and
655
00:53:30.000 --> 00:53:35.840
anything I was familiar with. So
it did take a lot to kind of
656
00:53:35.960 --> 00:53:38.360
get at the root of them and
their motives and their reasons for everything.
657
00:53:39.440 --> 00:53:44.719
So I spent a lot of time
on the research and on I did initially
658
00:53:44.760 --> 00:53:46.400
start out with too much, because, like you said, it can be
659
00:53:46.719 --> 00:53:51.519
so hard to pull yourself out of
it, and so like I had a
660
00:53:51.639 --> 00:53:57.079
lot more initially on like the Russian
Revolution, like that conflict with Germany that
661
00:53:57.159 --> 00:54:00.599
was going on kind of simultaneously as
the revolution was going on, because it
662
00:54:00.760 --> 00:54:05.119
did inform a lot of why the
Bolsheviks were doing what they were doing and
663
00:54:05.280 --> 00:54:07.639
everything else going on at home.
But my editor was like, Okay,
664
00:54:07.960 --> 00:54:10.880
yes, this is important, but
your readers are going to get really lost
665
00:54:12.000 --> 00:54:15.639
if we're throwing them Bolsheviks, social
revolutionaries, the Imperial government, provisional government,
666
00:54:15.719 --> 00:54:20.320
and now Germany. So like mention
what's relevant, but we don't need
667
00:54:20.360 --> 00:54:22.239
all this other stuff. And I'm
like, but it's important, ye,
668
00:54:22.800 --> 00:54:25.079
but yeah, so I kind of
had to streamline and keep the focus a
669
00:54:25.119 --> 00:54:30.159
little more just on that central conflict
between the Bolsheviks and the social revolutionaries.
670
00:54:30.119 --> 00:54:32.719
But it is hard to pull back, and that's why my historical notes end
671
00:54:32.800 --> 00:54:35.960
up being so long, because I'm
like, I have to tell you all
672
00:54:36.000 --> 00:54:38.480
this other stuff that I didn't get
to tell you, so I just I
673
00:54:38.519 --> 00:54:43.920
think it's fun and interesting to learn
about. Also with historical fiction, it's
674
00:54:43.960 --> 00:54:47.280
like, well it happened like this
is hoight, it happened right, So
675
00:54:47.519 --> 00:54:52.639
in many ways, you can't lose
a lot or deviate from a lot,
676
00:54:52.760 --> 00:54:55.559
but you do have to kind of
streamline as best you can, and you
677
00:54:55.639 --> 00:55:00.480
know, not write a textbook for
people. So it's the dela that would
678
00:55:00.519 --> 00:55:05.559
be hard. I'm sure that's a
very good skill or historical fiction fans who
679
00:55:05.559 --> 00:55:07.800
are also just like history nerds,
who are going to like point out any
680
00:55:08.079 --> 00:55:14.440
small error. So yeah, of
course, like hyperbod right exactly, the
681
00:55:14.480 --> 00:55:15.840
author show would be like, I
know this is a little different, or
682
00:55:16.000 --> 00:55:19.679
this is what I researched. I
couldn't find the right answer, here's where
683
00:55:19.679 --> 00:55:22.159
I did. What I did?
You know, like I did my homework,
684
00:55:22.280 --> 00:55:25.800
all right, I did my best. I know you traveled to do
685
00:55:25.960 --> 00:55:32.519
research too, and I'm really eager
to hear about what your experience was traveling
686
00:55:32.559 --> 00:55:36.760
to do research, because that's like, that's not an opportunity everybody gets.
687
00:55:36.840 --> 00:55:40.119
That's really exciting, it's awesome,
it's it's fascinating, it's so fun.
688
00:55:40.320 --> 00:55:43.760
I honestly, I did not get
to do it for Daughters of Victory because
689
00:55:43.760 --> 00:55:47.559
I was writing this book during covid
Um. Oh yeah, which was unfortunate.
690
00:55:47.599 --> 00:55:51.119
And then twenty twenty one came and
I was gonna go, but then
691
00:55:51.320 --> 00:55:52.960
you know, we kept getting spikes
and waves, and so I just got
692
00:55:53.119 --> 00:55:57.960
nervous to book anything. But my
best friend is an author from Russia who
693
00:55:58.039 --> 00:56:01.880
writes historical fantasy, so I would
call her like I had her. She's
694
00:56:01.960 --> 00:56:05.280
my critique partner anyway, so she
was going to read it anyway, and
695
00:56:05.320 --> 00:56:08.920
I said, please give me a
very strong cultural review also, so like,
696
00:56:09.039 --> 00:56:13.880
for example, in one of Mela's
like first scene, she shows up
697
00:56:13.880 --> 00:56:16.119
at her grandmother's house because she's going
to stay there. Great, that's not
698
00:56:16.159 --> 00:56:20.480
a spoiler, and so she walks
in. I have the meeting, you
699
00:56:20.559 --> 00:56:22.000
know, it's just kind of a
quick exchange and then she goes and get
700
00:56:22.039 --> 00:56:24.360
settled. And so my friend was
like, Okay, all this is fine,
701
00:56:24.519 --> 00:56:28.960
but in a Russian household, it
doesn't matter how well you know the
702
00:56:29.039 --> 00:56:30.880
person. If somebody's combing over to
your house, they're going to have tea
703
00:56:30.960 --> 00:56:34.639
first, So you need to throw
some food and some tea into this scene,
704
00:56:35.119 --> 00:56:37.360
you know, and things like that
that I just personally would not necessarily
705
00:56:37.480 --> 00:56:42.400
have known, not being Russian myself. And that's the other thing about a
706
00:56:42.559 --> 00:56:45.239
historical fiction and be writing a culture
that isn't your own, Like you want
707
00:56:45.280 --> 00:56:49.639
to do your homework and do your
due diligence and do it justice and give
708
00:56:49.679 --> 00:56:54.320
it the proper respect. So I
really do try to do that and define
709
00:56:54.800 --> 00:57:00.800
authentic voices to inform any any of
that if it's come up in my books.
710
00:57:00.639 --> 00:57:02.920
But yeah, for traveling for my
other books that I did get to
711
00:57:02.960 --> 00:57:07.039
travel for, I just got back
from a trip and I went to Poland
712
00:57:07.119 --> 00:57:09.960
for my first book, The Last
Checkmate. So for me, I like
713
00:57:10.119 --> 00:57:15.119
to do the research trip after I
have kind of figured the story out already,
714
00:57:15.159 --> 00:57:16.639
so I've done a little bit of
research on the front end. I've
715
00:57:16.679 --> 00:57:20.679
kind of put my synopsis together because
I also plot the whole thing before I
716
00:57:20.760 --> 00:57:23.760
read. Totally agree with that,
yeah, thank you, Yeah, yeah
717
00:57:23.880 --> 00:57:27.960
exactly, because I don't want to
go on the trip and then you know,
718
00:57:28.119 --> 00:57:30.960
something happens where my story has to
totally change and I'm like, well,
719
00:57:31.000 --> 00:57:34.519
I've already been. I can't go
back and research all these other things
720
00:57:34.639 --> 00:57:38.159
that I missed because I took the
trip too early. But then I do
721
00:57:38.360 --> 00:57:43.159
want to do that and to it
just helps inform the setting and the story
722
00:57:43.360 --> 00:57:46.480
so much. So I plot the
whole thing first and kind of get a
723
00:57:46.519 --> 00:57:51.039
good idea of what I want,
and then I go with my specific list
724
00:57:51.239 --> 00:57:53.159
of you know, these are the
places I need to see, these are
725
00:57:53.159 --> 00:57:57.039
the museums I need to go to, and it just it just helps to
726
00:57:57.079 --> 00:58:00.719
be in the environment so much and
just kind of feel the energy and the
727
00:58:00.800 --> 00:58:02.760
vibe of the place and just be
in that culture, especially if it's like
728
00:58:02.800 --> 00:58:07.800
a foreign country, because in Poland, you know, I'm eating Polish food
729
00:58:07.920 --> 00:58:09.840
and walking all these streets with all
this history and so stuff like that.
730
00:58:10.079 --> 00:58:15.480
Especially it was just so informative and
like going to Auschwitz and just capturing what
731
00:58:15.639 --> 00:58:20.519
it feels like to be there myself, and then to imagine what it was
732
00:58:20.559 --> 00:58:22.800
like for them, because at this
point I had, you know, done
733
00:58:22.800 --> 00:58:27.880
a lot of research on survivors,
and so I kind of was very informed
734
00:58:27.960 --> 00:58:30.480
on that experience, and it just
helped me kind of bring those feelings and
735
00:58:30.559 --> 00:58:35.159
those emotions into the story a little
bit stronger than it would have been otherwise,
736
00:58:35.239 --> 00:58:38.920
I think. So I definitely try
to travel as much as I can,
737
00:58:39.079 --> 00:58:43.239
if at all possible, for all
of my stories, and will hopefully
738
00:58:43.320 --> 00:58:46.159
be able to continue to do.
So. Yeah, I didn't even think
739
00:58:46.199 --> 00:58:51.119
about this getting written during COVID.
I maybe I'm thinking about your more recent
740
00:58:51.280 --> 00:58:53.679
trip where you right, and we
will talk about it. I do want
741
00:58:53.719 --> 00:58:57.760
to ask, what's kind of a
side Do you want to plug your friend
742
00:58:57.800 --> 00:59:01.840
in her book since you got me
to read it? Of course, yes,
743
00:59:02.119 --> 00:59:06.880
okay, So my friend her name
is Alicia Sanakovid Gilmore. Her book
744
00:59:06.960 --> 00:59:09.559
is called The Witch and the Czar. It is a historical fantasy set during
745
00:59:09.599 --> 00:59:16.000
the reign of Ivan the Terrible,
following the Slavic witch Bobby Aga. It's
746
00:59:16.079 --> 00:59:19.840
so good. So it's a retelling
of Bobby Aga because for those who don't
747
00:59:19.920 --> 00:59:24.199
know, technically the history of bobby
Aga, she was more likely thought to
748
00:59:24.280 --> 00:59:28.920
be like a demi goddess or something, and then kind of asked the stories
749
00:59:28.960 --> 00:59:31.639
evolved, she got turned into like
this old hag who was just kind of
750
00:59:32.519 --> 00:59:36.840
you know, in these men's stories, but doesn't really have her own story.
751
00:59:36.920 --> 00:59:39.360
And so my friend growing up Russian, you know, knew Bobbia Gas
752
00:59:39.440 --> 00:59:43.239
the witch and the child snatcher and
the hag and all these things, but
753
00:59:43.360 --> 00:59:47.039
then also knew this other kind of
lesser known aspect that she was more likely
754
00:59:47.480 --> 00:59:52.960
initially considered a goddess and a healer
and all these other things, and thought,
755
00:59:52.960 --> 00:59:54.519
okay, well, why has she
been vilified? Why is that the
756
00:59:54.639 --> 00:59:58.639
story we know of her? Now? What if she was different? And
757
00:59:58.760 --> 01:00:01.159
so that's kind of what this story
explore. So if you like um The
758
01:00:01.239 --> 01:00:06.719
Baron the Nightingale and Serse by Madeline
Miller, Baron the Nightingale by Catherine Arden
759
01:00:06.840 --> 01:00:09.159
and books like that, and you
will definitely enjoy the story. Yeah,
760
01:00:09.199 --> 01:00:13.599
it was a really fun read.
And I just like, I was asking
761
01:00:13.679 --> 01:00:15.599
for book recommendations last year and that
was the one you recommended to me,
762
01:00:15.639 --> 01:00:17.559
and so I was like, oh, we gotta tell other people about this,
763
01:00:19.199 --> 01:00:22.960
Yes, definitely, it's really what
the folk tale. Oh yeah,
764
01:00:23.000 --> 01:00:27.679
there's a lot of that, all
that good stuff. I want to see
765
01:00:28.400 --> 01:00:32.000
hut on chicken leg She's got it, don't worry, She's got the hot
766
01:00:32.599 --> 01:00:36.719
and all the gods and goddesses.
But then there's like the real people I've
767
01:00:36.760 --> 01:00:38.039
in The Terrible and all his stuff
going on at the same time. So
768
01:00:38.079 --> 01:00:44.440
it's a really cool kind of melding
of both worlds and kind of the Christianity
769
01:00:44.599 --> 01:00:47.119
versus Paganism. All of that's really
really interesting. Yeah for sure. All
770
01:00:47.199 --> 01:00:57.079
right, back to talking about you. So I know that these characters are
771
01:00:57.400 --> 01:01:00.719
based on real people. Yeah,
can you talk about that a little bit?
772
01:01:01.920 --> 01:01:07.639
Sure, So Spelana is kind of
a blend of two real women.
773
01:01:07.800 --> 01:01:12.079
So in that, well, I'll
just start with Mila actually because I started
774
01:01:12.199 --> 01:01:16.239
with her because I discovered the character
who inspired her character when I was researching
775
01:01:16.280 --> 01:01:22.199
The Last Checkmate. So I came
across a Soviet partisan named Xena Portova who
776
01:01:22.320 --> 01:01:27.440
lived with her grandmother during the invasion
and infiltrated a Nazi garrison with the purpose
777
01:01:27.480 --> 01:01:30.519
of poisoning the soldiers. And it
was ultimately like caught and executed by the
778
01:01:30.599 --> 01:01:34.000
Gestapo. I'm not spoiling the book
for you. I'm not telling you what
779
01:01:34.079 --> 01:01:37.760
I actually did. But so I
just thought it was fascinating. She was
780
01:01:37.760 --> 01:01:42.000
like sixteen years old and died when
she was like eighteen. So I just
781
01:01:42.119 --> 01:01:45.199
thought, what a brave and incredible
young woman. I need to find a
782
01:01:45.239 --> 01:01:51.519
way to tell this story. But
I didn't want to write about I don't
783
01:01:51.559 --> 01:01:54.639
really enjoy writing historical biography because I
want to be able to do what I
784
01:01:54.760 --> 01:01:58.679
want to do with the characters.
But I like having real people to kind
785
01:01:58.719 --> 01:02:01.840
of use his inspiration. So I
wanted to tie it to another time period
786
01:02:01.920 --> 01:02:05.840
that was significant in Russian history.
Also, so I didn't just do World
787
01:02:05.880 --> 01:02:08.079
War two again as I did with
my first book, which led me to
788
01:02:08.159 --> 01:02:15.719
the Revolution, and there I discovered
Vera Figner who was aristocrat growing up.
789
01:02:15.760 --> 01:02:21.119
So she grew up very privileged in
the late eighteen hundreds early nineteen hundreds and
790
01:02:22.639 --> 01:02:25.239
left her family to go join the
revolution with these lower classes. So,
791
01:02:25.320 --> 01:02:29.559
for those who don't know, the
Imperial government obviously had been in power in
792
01:02:29.639 --> 01:02:32.679
Russia for decades and hundreds of years, and so the lower classes did not
793
01:02:32.800 --> 01:02:37.079
have a lot of rights, suffered
a lot and were just kind of sick
794
01:02:37.119 --> 01:02:39.199
of it by the time the revolution
came around, and so that was the
795
01:02:39.280 --> 01:02:43.559
whole purpose of the revolution, to
kind of bring more equality to the country,
796
01:02:43.679 --> 01:02:45.920
that was the goal. So I
thought it was really interesting that someone
797
01:02:46.000 --> 01:02:52.719
who was so privileged and hadn't suffered
kind of recognized these flaws in her country
798
01:02:52.920 --> 01:02:55.119
and wanted to make a difference and
wanted to fight for, you know,
799
01:02:55.320 --> 01:02:59.840
the other man. And I wondered
what it would be like for her,
800
01:03:00.119 --> 01:03:02.320
and then for the people working with
her, like would they trust her and
801
01:03:02.480 --> 01:03:07.400
her motives because she hasn't experienced this
the same way they have, she doesn't
802
01:03:07.440 --> 01:03:12.679
come from the same background they do. And so Vera was ultimately arrested and
803
01:03:12.800 --> 01:03:15.719
imprisoned for twenty years in what was
supposed to be a life sentence, but
804
01:03:15.840 --> 01:03:21.559
then was released when the imperial government
was overthrown, and like did not want
805
01:03:21.599 --> 01:03:23.920
to leave jail, Like she was
so proud to have been arrested for this,
806
01:03:24.159 --> 01:03:29.480
and so just that conviction was fascinating
to me that someone was so just
807
01:03:29.639 --> 01:03:32.320
kind of obsessed with this cause.
So I wanted to kind of pull her
808
01:03:32.400 --> 01:03:37.519
into it. But then I also
found a woman named Afagya Kaplan, who
809
01:03:37.280 --> 01:03:43.320
was also a revolutionary. They don't
really know what party she was part of,
810
01:03:44.480 --> 01:03:47.639
but she was thought to have attempted
to assassinate Vladimir Lenin, and she
811
01:03:47.719 --> 01:03:51.719
had also been in prison for a
while and because of that, had a
812
01:03:51.760 --> 01:03:58.159
lot of health problems and was legally
blind and then kind of had some corrective
813
01:03:58.159 --> 01:04:01.000
surgery downe but still just had a
lot of health issues, poor vision,
814
01:04:01.280 --> 01:04:05.079
things like that, And so there's
kind of some debate on whether or not
815
01:04:05.519 --> 01:04:09.800
she was actually the person who carried
out this attempt or if she was just
816
01:04:09.960 --> 01:04:13.639
kind of caught in the crosshairs and
took the blame for it to protect whoever
817
01:04:13.760 --> 01:04:16.079
did do it. So I thought
that was really interesting as well, and
818
01:04:16.199 --> 01:04:20.199
wanted to kind of squish these two
women together to form set Lana. So
819
01:04:20.280 --> 01:04:26.599
that's what I did. And then
La is a fictional version of a woman
820
01:04:26.719 --> 01:04:31.679
like Zena Portova. That's super cool. And then there's a fictional version of
821
01:04:31.760 --> 01:04:38.400
Fania Kaplan in the story. Also, Yeah, I was thinking about the
822
01:04:38.639 --> 01:04:44.840
like these characters are so like their
perspectives are so interesting to me because obviously
823
01:04:44.960 --> 01:04:48.079
this is like such a different time
period and different life, right, I
824
01:04:48.280 --> 01:04:53.159
have ever experienced and like, what
is it like to put your headspace or
825
01:04:53.280 --> 01:04:57.119
put yourself in the headspace of people
who are just like i'll kill someone.
826
01:04:57.280 --> 01:05:02.239
Sure, I'll shoot this person.
Yeah. Like it was really like Svetlana
827
01:05:02.360 --> 01:05:06.239
was the hardest, Like she was
just the hardest for me to understand and
828
01:05:06.320 --> 01:05:11.159
to get to because of all those
reasons I mentioned. And then because this
829
01:05:11.320 --> 01:05:14.800
is also not a spoiler, she
has a daughter, and so she wants
830
01:05:14.920 --> 01:05:18.360
to ultimately raise her child, who
has been in a founiling hospital because she
831
01:05:18.480 --> 01:05:21.960
put her there after she had gave
birth to her with the intention of finishing
832
01:05:23.000 --> 01:05:26.440
the revolution and then going to get
her and raising her and being a happy
833
01:05:26.480 --> 01:05:30.559
little family. But in her mind, she can't do that until this revolution
834
01:05:30.719 --> 01:05:33.360
is over, and until she's done
her duty to her country, and until
835
01:05:33.440 --> 01:05:36.320
she's done all that, she can't
be a good mother to this child.
836
01:05:36.480 --> 01:05:40.880
She can't do anything else because she's
got to do this duty first. And
837
01:05:41.039 --> 01:05:45.559
so that was really really interesting for
me to kind of get in that headspace
838
01:05:45.639 --> 01:05:47.840
and understand, because for most of
us, we'd be Okay, I'm gonna
839
01:05:47.840 --> 01:05:50.880
go just have my life with my
child and be fine. The revolution will
840
01:05:50.880 --> 01:05:54.280
do what it does. It doesn't
need to involve me anymore. I've done
841
01:05:54.320 --> 01:05:58.440
my bit, but that's not how
she approaches it. And so between that
842
01:05:58.639 --> 01:06:01.320
and just between all the different discrepancies
of the parties as well, so her
843
01:06:01.400 --> 01:06:08.159
party, the social Revolutionaries wanted more
of a democratic kind of structure, so
844
01:06:08.280 --> 01:06:12.159
they wanted upper classes and lower classes
to vote for representatives, but more in
845
01:06:12.239 --> 01:06:15.519
a socialist way versus us being more
capitalist. But so I did understand that
846
01:06:15.840 --> 01:06:20.000
slightly more because the Bolsheviks, on
the other hand, wanted single party rule
847
01:06:20.039 --> 01:06:24.599
by the Bulsheviks only by the lower
classes, only because they said, the
848
01:06:24.639 --> 01:06:27.119
upper classes have had their time.
You know, they're done. We don't
849
01:06:27.159 --> 01:06:30.199
need to hear from them anymore.
So in a sense, I sort of
850
01:06:30.280 --> 01:06:34.760
understood that bit of her politics a
little. But then also they advocate political
851
01:06:34.880 --> 01:06:39.239
terrorism and all these other things,
and it's still just so different from anything
852
01:06:39.320 --> 01:06:41.880
I was used to. And it
took me a lot to finally figure that
853
01:06:42.000 --> 01:06:45.280
out anyway, because I was studying
all these different parties and thinking, Okay,
854
01:06:45.360 --> 01:06:48.119
where do they differ, where do
they agree? And how am I
855
01:06:48.199 --> 01:06:51.599
gonna, you know, does I
don't want to write a Bulshevik, but
856
01:06:51.679 --> 01:06:55.960
I didn't know if I could write
anybody that was any quote unquote better or
857
01:06:56.039 --> 01:06:59.159
worse. So I didn't even know
if it would work the way I wanted
858
01:06:59.199 --> 01:07:02.599
it to until I really got into
the weeds of those politics and understood how
859
01:07:02.719 --> 01:07:05.880
that would have informed her as a
character and as her background also because it
860
01:07:06.000 --> 01:07:12.039
needed to be something somewhat natural,
and so I thought that fit well with
861
01:07:12.199 --> 01:07:15.679
someone who has growed up aristocrat but
then recognizes that these other people deserve a
862
01:07:15.760 --> 01:07:19.480
say too, So she's not totally
giving up, you know, her rights
863
01:07:19.599 --> 01:07:23.280
for lack of a better word,
in terms of having upper classes have a
864
01:07:23.400 --> 01:07:26.920
voice, but then recognizes that lower
classes also need one as well. But
865
01:07:27.000 --> 01:07:30.960
it was very difficult to get into
that and just her relationship as a whole
866
01:07:30.159 --> 01:07:35.280
with Kesimir and just why that dynamic
is the way it is and why they're
867
01:07:35.360 --> 01:07:39.519
both in it and what they both
want out of it and all of that.
868
01:07:39.760 --> 01:07:43.920
So it was very difficult, But
I feel like, hopefully, if
869
01:07:43.920 --> 01:07:46.440
I've done my job, even if
you don't agree with her or understand her
870
01:07:46.960 --> 01:07:51.480
when you're reading with all her choices
and me less, you at least are
871
01:07:51.519 --> 01:07:55.519
you at least kind of understand why
they're doing what they're doing. Even if
872
01:07:55.599 --> 01:07:58.760
you don't support it or feel the
same way. I just wanted to get
873
01:07:58.800 --> 01:08:02.039
at the why. That was my
biggest question. Why did these people do
874
01:08:02.199 --> 01:08:05.159
the things they did and feel like
those were the choices they had to make.
875
01:08:05.400 --> 01:08:10.920
Yeah, I think that, Oh
no, go ahead. I was
876
01:08:10.920 --> 01:08:15.079
just gonna say, I think that's
really interesting, and I like admire your
877
01:08:15.119 --> 01:08:19.119
ability to get there, because Yeah, anytime I've tried to write and I'm
878
01:08:19.199 --> 01:08:24.039
like writing characters, it's like it
always becomes hard for me not to like
879
01:08:24.239 --> 01:08:27.800
immediately put myself in a place where
I'm like, I would feel so guilty
880
01:08:27.880 --> 01:08:30.079
if I did any of these things, and I would just be like consumed
881
01:08:30.199 --> 01:08:33.199
by that feeling. And like,
yeah, but like these people and like
882
01:08:33.399 --> 01:08:36.800
it's I mean, this is like
how it is when you're like raised in
883
01:08:36.920 --> 01:08:43.199
an environment that is like violent from
the moment you first experience life. It's
884
01:08:43.239 --> 01:08:46.119
like that's just what you know,
you know, right exactly. I was
885
01:08:46.159 --> 01:08:51.760
just gonna say, I feel like
reading these two perspectives, they read very
886
01:08:53.159 --> 01:09:00.319
like very different people like their energies, they're just very very different. Like
887
01:09:00.279 --> 01:09:03.800
yes, um, I don't know, have you had readers expressed to you
888
01:09:04.399 --> 01:09:08.000
if they have a favorite I feel
like We talked about this a little bit
889
01:09:08.039 --> 01:09:12.000
with your last book, and like
everyone had like different favorite characters. Yes,
890
01:09:12.119 --> 01:09:15.760
have you had that same experience with
this or do you feel like people
891
01:09:15.800 --> 01:09:18.880
are responding to one more than the
other, or yeah, I feel like
892
01:09:19.000 --> 01:09:25.880
people they like me a little more
because she is more innocent, more of
893
01:09:25.920 --> 01:09:29.199
a normal I had somebody saying,
yeah, she's more Yeah, exactly,
894
01:09:29.279 --> 01:09:32.479
and like she just kind of ends
up in this situation where its Fetlana kind
895
01:09:32.479 --> 01:09:38.840
of chooses it for herself and creates
a lot of the problems by her choices,
896
01:09:38.880 --> 01:09:43.199
which then end up falling into Mila's
lap. So sot Lana is definitely
897
01:09:43.239 --> 01:09:46.079
the one that people have less of
a good time than joying or you know,
898
01:09:46.159 --> 01:09:51.239
supporting I guess. But then I
did have an interesting reader remarks say,
899
01:09:51.359 --> 01:09:55.479
you know, I don't know if
we're supposed to like her, supposed
900
01:09:55.520 --> 01:09:58.800
to support her choices, because like
that's kind of something she has to learn.
901
01:09:58.880 --> 01:10:01.079
So maybe that's the point, like
we're supposed to read her and not
902
01:10:01.279 --> 01:10:08.079
necessarily agree because we have to learn
alongside her and see how those choices affect
903
01:10:08.079 --> 01:10:10.560
her. Because that was the other
thing I wanted to tell in this story,
904
01:10:10.680 --> 01:10:14.840
like how do our choices impact not
only us, but the people around
905
01:10:14.960 --> 01:10:18.640
us and the generations after us.
And I think that's what her story kind
906
01:10:18.680 --> 01:10:23.000
of captures very much, because then, like I said, when Mila comes
907
01:10:23.039 --> 01:10:27.159
into the picture, everything that's happened
in set Lana's life plus her own is
908
01:10:27.199 --> 01:10:30.920
all kind of coming to a head. So yeah, I would say people
909
01:10:31.960 --> 01:10:34.199
and people are a little more familiar
with World War Two. Also, the
910
01:10:34.279 --> 01:10:39.520
revolution is just complicated, and so
that's a lot for people to read and
911
01:10:39.640 --> 01:10:42.880
to understand because it's all new.
And then, like I said, she's
912
01:10:42.880 --> 01:10:46.760
just kind of less likable for a
lack of a better word. So yeah,
913
01:10:46.760 --> 01:10:48.840
I would say if they had to
pick a favorite, they'd lean toward
914
01:10:48.880 --> 01:10:51.039
Mila. But I've also had people
say they hate both of them, So
915
01:10:53.600 --> 01:10:59.880
I'm feeling fine. I mean,
Mila does make some questionable choices as well.
916
01:11:00.279 --> 01:11:05.199
Yeah, oh absolutely, as she's
not innocent either, so that's totally
917
01:11:05.279 --> 01:11:09.680
innocent. She comes into it a
little more innocently just because she hasn't been
918
01:11:09.720 --> 01:11:14.159
in that environment necessarily as much.
I just or I think I appreciated Mila
919
01:11:14.279 --> 01:11:17.720
because she's just feels very like energetic, like she's like she just goes out
920
01:11:17.760 --> 01:11:20.680
there, and she's immediately just like, where do I sign up for the
921
01:11:20.800 --> 01:11:29.359
revolution? And everyone's like, calm
down a little bit and don't exactly Yeah,
922
01:11:30.319 --> 01:11:33.039
I all in with both feet.
Yeah, she's she's gonna go in.
923
01:11:33.239 --> 01:11:38.359
Well, it's nice to because like
you can see even though they are
924
01:11:38.479 --> 01:11:42.439
very different characters, like they do
have similarities that you might expect from like
925
01:11:43.279 --> 01:11:46.960
you know, a granddaughter and her
yeah grandmother, even though like they never
926
01:11:47.039 --> 01:11:51.239
knew each other until now, right, to see the way that like those
927
01:11:51.479 --> 01:11:57.600
personality traits have carried through exactly,
because when you pick up with Svetlana,
928
01:11:57.720 --> 01:12:00.479
she's thirty in the first timeline,
having been in prison for like ten years,
929
01:12:00.880 --> 01:12:03.760
so she's already gone through a lot. And but then you get some
930
01:12:03.920 --> 01:12:08.720
little flashbacks to when she was younger
going to join the cause, and it's
931
01:12:08.800 --> 01:12:13.439
kind of a little bit of that
same like eagerness as Mila, I guess,
932
01:12:13.560 --> 01:12:16.479
but then of course very different energies, very different perspectives because she's not
933
01:12:16.920 --> 01:12:21.359
she's going to be a little more
methodical and calculated versus Mela's just like let's
934
01:12:21.399 --> 01:12:25.039
go, let's do it. I
don't need to plan I just need to
935
01:12:25.119 --> 01:12:27.960
jump in with both feed and Setlana
is going to think it through a little
936
01:12:27.960 --> 01:12:30.880
bit more. Yeah, but they
also are both very much like I am
937
01:12:31.000 --> 01:12:33.960
right in this situation. I know
the right thing, right, so I'm
938
01:12:34.000 --> 01:12:40.199
going to do it. I will
not be taking a sack you exactly.
939
01:12:40.600 --> 01:12:46.399
Your opinion is irrelevant. This is
like, well, not necessarily shifting gears.
940
01:12:46.479 --> 01:12:53.199
But I find it interesting, especially
reading and hearing you talk about the
941
01:12:53.520 --> 01:13:00.079
figures that inspired this. How many
of these revolutionary leaders were women in?
942
01:13:00.800 --> 01:13:06.960
Yeah, were you like surprised by
how much you found? I was,
943
01:13:08.079 --> 01:13:11.960
because when I was researching, like, my first thought with a revolution was
944
01:13:12.319 --> 01:13:15.640
were women even involved? Like I
knew obviously they were there, but were
945
01:13:15.680 --> 01:13:17.800
they do in the fighting and all
this kind of stuff like I wanted them
946
01:13:17.840 --> 01:13:20.199
to be, because then if that
was not the case, I needed to
947
01:13:20.279 --> 01:13:24.920
kind of pivot what my revolutionary timeline
was going to be. So I was
948
01:13:25.079 --> 01:13:30.079
very pleasantly surprised to see how many
were involved in the action and in you
949
01:13:30.159 --> 01:13:33.359
know, the politics and everything else
going on. And honestly a little bit
950
01:13:33.399 --> 01:13:38.960
shocked because I didn't think, you
know, men would necessarily be on board
951
01:13:39.000 --> 01:13:43.000
with that, but they they led
them and they didn't stop them. I
952
01:13:43.039 --> 01:13:45.279
guess, and so it was really
interested. Couldn't stop them. Maybe they
953
01:13:45.359 --> 01:13:49.800
tried, but it was interesting and
very refreshing to see and to know.
954
01:13:50.039 --> 01:13:53.680
And this is, you know,
just another piece of history that I wasn't
955
01:13:53.680 --> 01:13:56.199
aware of, and I figured a
lot of people wouldn't be either. Yeah.
956
01:13:56.520 --> 01:14:00.560
Did you find that the historical writing
on these on the women, like,
957
01:14:01.159 --> 01:14:08.039
was different than the way that people
talked about the men revolutionaries? Yeah?
958
01:14:08.079 --> 01:14:10.800
A little. I mean obviously there
was a lot less. It was
959
01:14:10.880 --> 01:14:13.800
just kind of this whole big paragraph
about a man and then oh and then
960
01:14:13.880 --> 01:14:15.680
this woman was here too, and
I'm like, okay, great, I
961
01:14:15.760 --> 01:14:18.279
can look up her maybe and try
to find something there of it. Yeah,
962
01:14:18.319 --> 01:14:21.880
definitely, not very much at all, because there's so much on all
963
01:14:21.920 --> 01:14:26.760
these men who were active in the
revolution and you know, did a lot
964
01:14:26.840 --> 01:14:30.000
of big things that you know,
shifted gears one way or the other.
965
01:14:30.640 --> 01:14:34.159
But like this assassination attempt against Lennon, like that's a big deal, and
966
01:14:34.600 --> 01:14:38.880
nobody hears about that. You get
like this little tiny blip of oh yeah,
967
01:14:38.960 --> 01:14:41.479
this happened, and then here's what
it happened after that that all the
968
01:14:41.520 --> 01:14:43.279
men did to kind of deal with
it. But it's like, no,
969
01:14:43.399 --> 01:14:45.800
I want to know about her,
like why did she do this? Do
970
01:14:45.920 --> 01:14:49.479
we know? And we don't partially
because I mean there's like all this you
971
01:14:49.560 --> 01:14:54.720
know, differences and opinions. But
like back then, all the people who
972
01:14:54.760 --> 01:14:58.159
were there could have you know,
figured a lot more out, I feel
973
01:14:58.199 --> 01:15:00.920
like, and then passed it on
to the rest of us versus now we're
974
01:15:00.079 --> 01:15:03.880
going backwards trying to pick up the
pieces and everything. So it's just a
975
01:15:03.960 --> 01:15:08.239
lot harder in that sense to figure
it out. But it was very,
976
01:15:08.560 --> 01:15:13.640
very interesting. Another thing that I
thought was interesting was the way that like
977
01:15:13.880 --> 01:15:17.159
romance played in this book, because
like, and I'm not going to spoil
978
01:15:17.279 --> 01:15:20.560
anything, but like the way that
it sort of like starts is not really
979
01:15:20.680 --> 01:15:24.640
it doesn't like go where necessarily I
thought it was going, as far as
980
01:15:24.760 --> 01:15:29.399
like what what couples I'm going to
root for and things like that. Yeah,
981
01:15:29.600 --> 01:15:32.479
So how did you like approach those
kind of plot lines if you can
982
01:15:32.560 --> 01:15:36.119
talk about it without giving too much
away, Yeah, I'll do my best.
983
01:15:36.359 --> 01:15:41.439
Um. Yeah, So there's two
different ones obviously, spet Lana and
984
01:15:41.479 --> 01:15:45.600
Milam. So for spet Lanas,
I wanted there to be a lot of
985
01:15:45.680 --> 01:15:48.880
existing history already because, first of
all, she's older, and she's already
986
01:15:48.880 --> 01:15:53.439
been through a lot, and and
then I just thought that would just add
987
01:15:53.439 --> 01:15:58.479
a fun layer of complication if there
is all this existing history and then just
988
01:15:58.640 --> 01:16:03.439
kind of the to people who are
very very alike in a lot of ways,
989
01:16:03.680 --> 01:16:06.920
and almost too much alike in a
lot of ways, because they're both
990
01:16:08.119 --> 01:16:13.800
so committed to their cause and more
so than anything else in anyone else in
991
01:16:13.840 --> 01:16:16.680
their lives. So how is that
going to affect them and their relationship?
992
01:16:17.239 --> 01:16:20.479
And they've grown up very differently,
so how do those views kind of affect
993
01:16:20.560 --> 01:16:25.239
themselves their view of themselves and of
each other, and how is that going
994
01:16:25.319 --> 01:16:29.520
to play into the relationship? Can
it work? Can it not? So
995
01:16:29.760 --> 01:16:34.560
that was very interesting for me to
explore. Versus Mila, she's younger,
996
01:16:34.800 --> 01:16:40.840
and so I just thought it would
be really interesting to do something similar a
997
01:16:40.920 --> 01:16:45.399
bit more in terms of a relationship, but just more of that first romance
998
01:16:45.520 --> 01:16:48.520
for her first or for serious,
you know, kind of relationship. But
999
01:16:48.640 --> 01:16:54.399
then what would that look like when
the world is so uncertain and nobody really
1000
01:16:54.479 --> 01:16:57.880
knows what's happening, and is it
even worth trying to get attached to someone?
1001
01:16:58.119 --> 01:17:01.600
And so how is that going to
effect you and your choices and this
1002
01:17:01.760 --> 01:17:05.800
other person and their choices, and
you're again just your relationship as a whole.
1003
01:17:05.840 --> 01:17:10.560
And is it going to work because
there are all these factors outside your
1004
01:17:10.600 --> 01:17:14.359
control as well, in addition to
the things you can control, and you
1005
01:17:14.479 --> 01:17:16.880
still got, you know, this
whole war raging around you. So can
1006
01:17:17.079 --> 01:17:21.600
you focus enough on that and on
the good things you can find in it
1007
01:17:24.439 --> 01:17:27.560
and hopefully pull out of it or
are you just going to be you know,
1008
01:17:27.800 --> 01:17:30.079
one track mind, focus on the
work and then worry about those kinds
1009
01:17:30.119 --> 01:17:34.600
of things later when things are calmer, or could it potentially work out and
1010
01:17:34.880 --> 01:17:39.600
you know, be a good thing
and be worth investing into. So it
1011
01:17:39.680 --> 01:17:45.000
was really really interesting dynamics, very
different dynamics, and also fun for me
1012
01:17:45.119 --> 01:17:49.079
to write for better for warms,
So it was good. I do always
1013
01:17:49.159 --> 01:17:54.920
appreciate a romance and there, yes, yes, yes, it's a good
1014
01:17:54.960 --> 01:17:59.359
time. Yeah. Well can you
tell us about what you're working on next?
1015
01:18:00.199 --> 01:18:02.880
Gosh, Well, it's kind of
up in the air at this point.
1016
01:18:02.960 --> 01:18:06.359
I have some proposals that I'm working
on for my editor, so we'll
1017
01:18:06.439 --> 01:18:11.920
see what she goes for. So
I can't spoil a ton yet, but
1018
01:18:12.279 --> 01:18:16.960
I will say, different eras than
what I've done before. Some that have
1019
01:18:17.119 --> 01:18:20.000
like a little bit of like a
World War kind of setting, but others
1020
01:18:20.119 --> 01:18:27.079
that deal more with other kind of
different significant events in history, but still
1021
01:18:27.800 --> 01:18:32.640
female driven, female lad Probably some
politics in there, because somehow I don't
1022
01:18:32.640 --> 01:18:35.319
seem to get away from that.
I know, it's like and as someone
1023
01:18:35.479 --> 01:18:39.439
like I don't really love politics,
and somehow they always end up in my
1024
01:18:39.479 --> 01:18:43.520
story because they're so informative of history, so it's like I can't really get
1025
01:18:43.560 --> 01:18:46.680
away from them. But yeah,
definitely, very very fun research, very
1026
01:18:46.720 --> 01:18:49.640
interesting. I will say, I
just went to New York for one thing,
1027
01:18:49.920 --> 01:18:54.880
So take that and do with it
what you will. Be a lot
1028
01:18:54.960 --> 01:18:59.399
of things, could be a lot
of things exactly. So hopefully I'll have
1029
01:18:59.479 --> 01:19:01.159
some news about that in the coming
months. But I've had a good time.
1030
01:19:02.239 --> 01:19:04.720
Working on two different proposals at once. Has been a lot for my
1031
01:19:04.800 --> 01:19:11.119
brain, but it's been fun.
Yeah, we'll have to have you back
1032
01:19:11.199 --> 01:19:15.760
on whenever next, Yes or before. You're always welcome. Yes, trying
1033
01:19:15.800 --> 01:19:19.239
to get you on here when we
did that Sandra Bullock movie but just didn't
1034
01:19:19.279 --> 01:19:23.640
work out schedule. Yes, that's
right. I know that would have been
1035
01:19:23.720 --> 01:19:28.600
fun. Next time. Anytime we
do, we'll thank of you. Yea
1036
01:19:30.359 --> 01:19:43.399
perfect. Um, we have no
listener feedback this week, and that's your
1037
01:19:43.439 --> 01:19:45.640
fault, listener, So what are
we going to do to fix that?

01:19:50.479 --> 01:19:56.000
feedback on this episode or any other
episode and we will gladly address it on
1040
01:19:56.039 --> 01:19:59.239
the podcast. Um. Do we
have anything on the blog? Friends?
1041
01:19:59.640 --> 01:20:05.239
Okay, look, something's cooking.
Yeah, but Gabriella was on holiday.
1042
01:20:05.760 --> 01:20:13.680
Other Gabriella, other Gabriella. Yes, not Gabriella, a different Gabriella.
1043
01:20:14.199 --> 01:20:17.920
Didn't you know you're doing? So? I was like, oh, this
1044
01:20:18.079 --> 01:20:23.640
is interesting. Were you like I
was on a holiday, right? I
1045
01:20:23.760 --> 01:20:26.520
was like, well, I did, just get back around yours. Um,
1046
01:20:27.680 --> 01:20:30.239
a different Gabriella was on a holiday. So we have not written our
1047
01:20:30.479 --> 01:20:35.359
Dudgeons and Dragon's blog posts yet,
but she has written more and now I'm
1048
01:20:35.439 --> 01:20:40.359
gonna write more today. So I'm
excited because I really enjoyed that movie.
1049
01:20:40.520 --> 01:20:43.359
I thought it was so fun.
I did too. I did too,
1050
01:20:43.680 --> 01:20:46.720
And we're kind of coming at it
from two completely different angles because I have
1051
01:20:46.840 --> 01:20:51.119
played a lot of D and D
and Gabriella has never played D and D.
1052
01:20:51.920 --> 01:20:55.640
She was just like, I know
general fantasy tropes, but I don't
1053
01:20:55.680 --> 01:20:59.920
know anything about D and D.
It's so it's interesting and she has,
1054
01:21:00.840 --> 01:21:04.600
yeah, perspect like a deep pop
culture knowledge. Yeah, you can even
1055
01:21:04.720 --> 01:21:11.159
talk more about the D and D
game specific differences in the movie, Yeah,
1056
01:21:11.520 --> 01:21:15.520
which there are many. I mean, it is it is an interesting
1057
01:21:15.760 --> 01:21:18.760
experience because like sitting there, I'm
like thinking about the rules and I'm like,
1058
01:21:18.800 --> 01:21:21.319
Okay, well, clearly this person
is this, and this person is
1059
01:21:21.359 --> 01:21:26.359
this, here's the rogue, here's
the Sorcerer. You know, like I'm
1060
01:21:26.800 --> 01:21:29.560
kind of like plotting it out.
I'm like, Okay, this person just
1061
01:21:29.720 --> 01:21:32.159
used Fireball, so they probably can't
use another spell of that, Like you
1062
01:21:32.239 --> 01:21:36.600
know, like there were parts where
I was like, she wouldn't have that
1063
01:21:36.680 --> 01:21:42.520
many nice level spells. She just
simply wouldn't. So I think I've the
1064
01:21:42.640 --> 01:21:45.439
Druid. I feel like the Druid. Yeah, I was like, you
1065
01:21:45.439 --> 01:21:51.319
wouldn't have that many wild chap Okay, sorry any of that means but but
1066
01:21:51.760 --> 01:21:57.840
but like, so to two different
perspectives, I'm looking for talking about a
1067
01:21:57.880 --> 01:22:00.600
movie we both enjoy it and if
you haven't seen it, I really do
1068
01:22:00.720 --> 01:22:02.800
feel like it's a movie that's enjoyable
whether or not you played D and D.
1069
01:22:02.960 --> 01:22:06.600
It's a really fun movie. Yeah, it's funny. It's very funny.
1070
01:22:06.640 --> 01:22:10.760
I laughed out loud many times.
I do want to see it.
1071
01:22:10.840 --> 01:22:14.119
I like the cast. Yeah,
it's a good cast, got a good
1072
01:22:14.199 --> 01:22:18.439
cast. I will say my experience
was ruined a little bit because there was
1073
01:22:18.479 --> 01:22:21.359
a person sitting next to us in
the theater. The theater was packed,
1074
01:22:21.880 --> 01:22:26.640
and we went with our D and
D group, and I think a lot
1075
01:22:26.720 --> 01:22:30.479
of other people did too, because
there were groups of four or five scattered
1076
01:22:30.520 --> 01:22:33.920
around the theater, and the person
who sat next to us just kept laughing
1077
01:22:35.680 --> 01:22:45.479
very loud, very obnoxiously, and
then saying I liked that was how fucking
1078
01:22:45.800 --> 01:22:51.439
dare? How dare? The laster
kind of suggest that they liked that,
1079
01:22:51.640 --> 01:22:58.239
do they have to also say?
It's like when someone said and it was
1080
01:22:58.359 --> 01:23:00.840
funny, which is something I do
often, is I don't laugh, and
1081
01:23:00.920 --> 01:23:05.319
I say that's really funny that it
was a wild laugh too. They were
1082
01:23:05.359 --> 01:23:11.840
like, oh man, I love
that makes it into the blog post.
1083
01:23:12.079 --> 01:23:15.520
This is a long long way of
saying blog posts are coming at some point.
1084
01:23:15.680 --> 01:23:17.880
Kelly and I are reading a book. Yeah, I'm not sure when.
1085
01:23:18.159 --> 01:23:21.920
Yeah, it'll happen. I have
the book now, so that's that's
1086
01:23:21.920 --> 01:23:25.880
been the right. Oh awesome,
let me know when you start reading it,
1087
01:23:25.960 --> 01:23:28.520
and I'll start reading it. I
don't want to start reading it first
1088
01:23:30.319 --> 01:23:34.479
reading our next podcast book and then
I'm going to read Okay, that book.
1089
01:23:35.000 --> 01:23:39.960
Wait, what's it called? Club
is probably happening. Oh yeah,
1090
01:23:39.960 --> 01:23:42.479
we need to talk about that.
Also. Wait, okay, what book
1091
01:23:42.520 --> 01:23:46.079
are we reading? How? House
of Hunger bi alex House of Hunger by
1092
01:23:46.079 --> 01:23:49.880
Alexis Henderson is what we are reading, so that will be up soon.
1093
01:23:50.079 --> 01:23:58.359
And then Mary and I are reading
Burned Down, Rise Up by somebody.
1094
01:24:00.600 --> 01:24:05.159
We're so prepared. I was like, don't worry, Gabriella, this part's
1095
01:24:05.159 --> 01:24:09.800
so short. Okay, Mary and
I are reading Burned Down, Rise Up
1096
01:24:09.880 --> 01:24:13.680
by Vincent Toronto. I want to
say his last name is. So that
1097
01:24:13.840 --> 01:24:17.920
will be happening soon as well.
Here it's a little mystery, a little
1098
01:24:18.000 --> 01:24:25.479
horror, a little queer. So
I'm excited. Nice um on our next
1099
01:24:25.760 --> 01:24:29.279
book episode, which will be led
by Susan, but she's not here,
1100
01:24:29.359 --> 01:24:33.159
so i'll say it. Uh,
that is going to be scorched grace by
1101
01:24:33.439 --> 01:24:36.159
Margo and I looked this up earlier
because I was like, I don't know
1102
01:24:36.239 --> 01:24:39.520
how to say that, but I
saw a video of her saying it,
1103
01:24:39.640 --> 01:24:45.479
and it is pronounced Margo. Do
why he? Why why he? Or
1104
01:24:45.600 --> 01:24:53.399
do why he? Do do he? Um? It's been several hours since
1105
01:24:54.600 --> 01:24:57.479
he Okay, I just want to
know where the do why he? I
1106
01:24:57.600 --> 01:25:02.880
think why he? Okay? That
will be Tuesday, May sixteenth, and
1107
01:25:02.960 --> 01:25:06.520
then our next othersode is going to
be on Are you there, God,
1108
01:25:06.560 --> 01:25:12.880
It's me Margaret, and that will
be on Tuesday, May thirtieth. Maybe
1109
01:25:12.920 --> 01:25:16.880
you noticed that we have switched over
to Tuesday days. Yeah, yep,
1110
01:25:17.000 --> 01:25:24.039
we're We're doing Tuesday now. Gabriella, where can people find you on the
1111
01:25:24.199 --> 01:25:28.760
internet. On the Internet, people
can find me at Gabriella Sab dot com
1112
01:25:28.960 --> 01:25:33.600
and then I'm on Twitter and Instagram
at Gabriella Sab Underscore and I'm on Facebook
1113
01:25:33.680 --> 01:25:39.159
at Facebook dot com slash Gabriella Sab
Author. Is there anything else that you
1114
01:25:39.199 --> 01:25:45.239
would like to plug? If you
like historical fiction? I also run a
1115
01:25:45.319 --> 01:25:48.199
group called hf chit Chat with some
friends of mine. So if you are
1116
01:25:48.279 --> 01:25:53.439
a writer or aspiring writer or just
like chat and historical fiction. We do
1117
01:25:53.560 --> 01:25:57.640
monthly chats over on Twitter for now. We have an Instagram also, and
1118
01:25:58.000 --> 01:26:01.199
we'll see if Twitter explodes in the
next few weeks slash months and we'll officially
1119
01:26:01.279 --> 01:26:03.880
move all the way over to Instagram. But we are active on both.
1120
01:26:04.079 --> 01:26:08.800
Um but that account is at HF
chit Chat, So we do chats,
1121
01:26:08.920 --> 01:26:12.279
we do interviews, We do all
sorts of things once a month at the
1122
01:26:12.359 --> 01:26:15.039
end of the month. So we
just had a chat this month, so
1123
01:26:15.159 --> 01:26:19.000
look for us at the end of
next month, and just keep up with
1124
01:26:19.119 --> 01:26:24.000
us online. We promote lots of
books also, so we'll always be recommending
1125
01:26:24.279 --> 01:26:28.119
historical reads and upcoming releases and things. Um. So yeah, it's me
1126
01:26:28.159 --> 01:26:30.159
and my friend that I mentioned earlier, Alicia, and then two of our
1127
01:26:30.199 --> 01:26:34.760
other friends who are also on writing
journeys as well, and wave people from
1128
01:26:34.800 --> 01:26:39.359
all over the world, all walks
of life, and they write or read
1129
01:26:39.520 --> 01:26:44.319
historical fiction and all its subgenres,
so fantasy, anything else in a historical
1130
01:26:44.399 --> 01:26:48.960
setting. Yeah, because yeah about
that. Yeah, we're always yeah,
1131
01:26:49.359 --> 01:26:51.640

just a good group. It's a good,
1132
01:26:51.760 --> 01:26:58.479

1144
01:28:11.239 --> 01:28:14.720
h h h
