Group texts feel inconsistent for a reason, and once you understand how messages actually move between iPhone and Android phones, the whole thing stops feeling random. In this episode, Frank explains why one thread has read receipts and sharp photos while another looks like a fax machine from the 1990s, why one friend always shows up in a different color bubble, and why you can leave some groups but not others.
Frank walks through the layers hiding behind your everyday texting app: plain SMS and MMS, Apple's iMessage, and RCS, the richer carrier-backed standard Google helped popularize. He also covers the big 2026 change, end-to-end encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android with iOS 26.5, when Google Chat makes more sense than texting a phone number, and the simplest ways to quiet a noisy group without ghosting anyone.
What you will learn in this episode:
- Why your texting app quietly picks a different technology for each conversation, and why that causes the "whiplash" between chats
- What SMS and MMS are, and why they are the lowest common denominator for a mixed group
- What iMessage does when everyone is on an Apple device, and why adding one Android phone changes the thread for everyone
- Why "Leave group" appears on some threads and not others
- What RCS is, and how it makes iPhone-to-Android texting far better than it used to be
- What changed with iOS 26.5: end-to-end encrypted RCS, the new lock icon, and why everyone needs current software for it to work
- How Google Chat differs from texting a phone number, and when it is the better tool for a team or family
- How to mute a group with Hide Alerts on iPhone and per-thread mute on Android, without leaving
