ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Tame It Series, Part 5: Task Clutter
You've probably heard the advice: do a brain dump. Write everything down and you'll feel better. And the theory is solid, but so many of us fill one page, keep going, and end up more overwhelmed than when we started.
The brain dump isn't the problem. The missing step is what you do after.
In this episode, Dr. Alise introduces the 5 D's framework for decluttering a task list that's gotten too long to function: Delete, Defer, Delegate, Decomplicate, and Do. It's the same logic as clearing a closet that's been filled to bursting:once you get through it, you can actually see what's there, and everything that remains means something.
She also tackles what causes task lists to bloat in the first place, why digital task managers can actually make things worse, and how a single weekly habit keeps the pile from coming back.
In this episode:
- Why brain dumps sometimes backfire and the step most people skip
- The 5 D's for decluttering any task list, including the one most people overlook (Decomplicate)
- How to check your task list against your actual calendar and what to do when they don't match
- The pause-before-yes habit that keeps task clutter from building back up
- How the Prior 10 weekly planning practice keeps your list tight enough to see your priorities in it
Next week: Drift and being late: the kind of clutter that happens not in your home or your inbox, but in time itself. If you've ever looked up and wondered where your morning went, that's next on Tame It.
