00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:12.560
Hi everyone, happy Tuesday.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:14.720
Welcome back to Worldview Academy's Quickcast.
00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:16.320
I'm not that person. I'm your host, Dell Cook.
00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:24.079
Thanks for allowing us once again into your week with thoughtful worldview content, encouraging biblical teaching, and timely contemporary commentary.
00:00:24.079 --> 00:00:33.280
This week we've talked about what we are as humans and who we are as humans, but how are we as humans?
00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:36.960
Spoiler alert, not great.
00:00:53.439 --> 00:00:54.799
I'm not that person. I can promise you that.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:00:59.039
I don't have anything to deceive you on.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:00.399
Of course, I'm not deceiving you.
00:01:00.399 --> 00:01:03.759
I'm engaging with you as a human being.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:08.239
Why would I deceive you?
00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:13.920
There's no reason for me to do that.
00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:20.480
Thus, the voice of Elizabeth Holmes in a documentary entitled, You Can See Everything.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:30.560
Holmes is the disgraced founder of Theranos, a health technology company purported to have developed a revolutionary blood testing method that would transform health care.
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:38.560
She was found guilty in 2018 on several counts of fraud and conspiracy to deceive investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:46.000
You Can See Everything traces her systematic and intricate scheme of deception, and it's showing in theaters nationwide.
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:56.480
Now, Holmes is the latest in a continuous line of smart, talented, ambitious entrepreneurs who, in the process of solving a problem, find themselves to be the problem.
00:01:56.480 --> 00:02:02.480
Sam Bankman-Fried, known in his heyday simply as SBF, is another example.
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:13.919
He sits penniless today in a jail cell serving a 25-year sentence for wire fraud, commodities fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and violation of campaign finance law.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:33.039
Now that's a pretty impressive rap sheet that represents a fairly significant fall from grace when you consider that in March of 2022, he was the 41st richest person in America, with an estimated net worth of some $26 billion and projections that he would probably be the world's first trillionaire.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:34.879
So what happened?
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:39.680
Well, Bankman-Fried was the golden boy of the burgeoning cryptocurrency economy.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:48.240
He headed up a multi-billion dollar empire through his exchange company FTX and its sister trading firm, Alameda Research.
00:02:48.240 --> 00:02:59.199
Celebrated as a philanthropic hero, Bankman-Fried's driving motivation was to generate as much income as possible to rescue and fund as much good as possible in the world.
00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:07.120
This included negotiations to personally pay off the whole of the Bahamas' $9 billion national debt.
00:03:07.120 --> 00:03:16.240
He claimed to make donations not based on personal interest, but on the projects that are proven by data to be the most effective at helping people.
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:26.960
But all that came crashing down when, in November 2022, a financial expose triggered a massive bank run that collapsed FTX into bankruptcy overnight.
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:39.039
Investigators eventually uncovered that Bankman-Fried had secretly siphoned over $8 billion in customer deposits to fund Alameda's risky bets, luxury real estate, and political donations.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:48.479
Bankman Fried was arrested, extradited, tried, and convicted on seven counts of fraud and sentenced to that 25 years in prison.
00:03:48.479 --> 00:03:58.080
Now Bankman-Fried was working diligently at this time toward what he perceived to be the good, but he was doing so very badly.
00:03:58.080 --> 00:04:05.360
Holmes and Bankman Freed's stories present an accurate picture of the present state of our own human condition.
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:12.639
Here we all are image bearers of God, and as such we all universally prefer the true, the good, and the beautiful.
00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:17.439
Now at first glance, you may question or even reject that notion, but think about it.
00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:27.920
In a world where agreement on anything is rare, all worldviews seem to agree and assert that for something to be true is better than it for it to be false.
00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:32.240
Good is preferable to bad and beautiful is superior to ugly.
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:37.519
However, along with that inclination, we also bear the image of our father Adam.
00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:42.480
We all, universally, tend to choose the false, the bad, and the ugly.
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:47.040
All the while we believe that it is true and good and beautiful.
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:58.480
In the words of the prophet Isaiah, we call evil good and good evil, we put darkness for light and light for darkness, we put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:12.879
It's telling to me that eight out of the ten commandments, the description of all that is right and good and proper in the world living before the face of God, eight out of ten of those commandments begin with the words thou shalt not.
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:17.519
Our natural default direction is in the wrong direction.
00:05:17.519 --> 00:05:21.120
We are inherently fallen, corrupted, and broken.
00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:35.439
We aren't as corrupted as we can possibly be, but every possible aspect of our nature, body and soul, is somehow touched by that corruption, our thinking, our perceptions, and the actions that are the outcomes of those sentiments.
00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:40.079
They're all touched by an inherent and an inherited malady.
00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:42.319
This is so abundantly apparent that G.
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:42.560
K.
00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:51.680
Chesterton once quipped that original sin is the only part of Christian theology which can really and readily be empirically proven.
00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:57.360
We are inherently, inheritedly, and inescapably messed up.
00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:03.839
And that is why Jesus speaks so often and so clearly on the idea of the need for repentance.
00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:19.519
From the very beginning of his ministry, the common refrain of his teaching was, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Now that word "repent", (the Greek word is "metanoia"), it literally means to turn around, to be fundamentally inverted.
00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:28.959
The appearing of the second Adam, (humanity, as he should have been), is to demonstrate how upside down and inside out the world really is.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:51.279
Mankind, disengaged from his creator, goes on a wild tilt a whirl of a ride that Saint Paul describes as a life becoming futile in their thinking, their foolish hearts are darkened, claiming to be wise, they become fools, and exchange the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:56.959
As we claim wisdom, we claim goodness, we long for truth and beauty.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:02.480
Instead we embrace folly, we endorse falseness, and we enshrine evil.
00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:09.759
Now that's bad news, but good news is found in the second reason for the appearance of the second Adam who called himself the way.
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:26.879
The incarnation of the Logos was to demonstrate the truth that is true, the good that is good, and the beautiful that is beautiful, so that we could reorient our lives to be in harmony with the way things are and the way things are supposed to be.
00:07:26.879 --> 00:08:03.680
By the will of the Father, in the incarnation of the Son, and through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we have a recognition of the true, the good, and the beautiful, an awareness of our falling short of that reality, and a way and means to, in the words of John Milton, "repair the ruins of our first parents by regaining to know God aright, and out of that knowledge to love Him, to imitate Him, to be like Him." To order our lives in harmony with the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, and in so doing, become partakers of the divine nature.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:07.279
Next week we'll look into that question of knowledge.
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:11.199
How do we know that we know whatever it is that we do know?
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:12.399
You know?
00:08:12.399 --> 00:08:16.560
Until then, a word of wisdom for your week from the mouth of the frog.
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:19.279
Time sure is fun when you're having flies.
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:21.040
Grace and peace to you.
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:12.560
Hi everyone, happy Tuesday.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:14.720
Welcome back to Worldview Academy's Quickcast.
