ABOUT THIS EPISODE
A 1-3 record can hide a team’s true potential. After injuries, constant lineup changes, and three difficult losses, Coach Freeman’s team shocks a highly ranked 5A Blackfoot squad, turning a struggling season into a test of belief, consistency, and identity. This is the unfiltered reality of life between the lines. Coach Freeman breaks down how a young, injury-depleted offensive line shuffled three starters, how the offense rediscovered its balance at 57% run and 43% pass, and why responding to mistakes matters more than playing a perfect game. He also examines the adjustments to the counter scheme and inside veer triple option that helped the team find answers against Blackfoot’s defensive front. You’ll hear why confidence cannot be installed on a whiteboard, how quarterbacks and playmakers learn to trust more of the athletes around them, and why offensive line work often determines an offense’s future without ever appearing in the box score. Freeman also shares his bye-week plan: return to fundamental footwork, double teams, pulls, and down blocks while giving injured players a chance to heal. But one win does not erase three losses. Coach Freeman confronts the “bad” and the “ugly,” from missed reads and blocks to the deeper challenge of stacking great weeks together. He reflects on what coaches can learn from both failure and success, why panic is not the answer at 0-2, and how going back to basics can rebuild a team without abandoning its core philosophy. The episode also moves beyond football, into the demands of coaching while teaching PE, raising a family, and learning to be present after the final whistle. Then attention turns to the upcoming Service Bowl against Canyon Ridge, a rivalry game that represents more than competition and honors the police officers, firefighters, military members, first responders, and others who serve their communities. For coaches, players, parents, and anyone navigating adversity, this episode delivers a powerful reminder: your record is part of your story, but it does not get to decide who you are. The Blackfoot win can be a high point, or it can be the turning point. Now comes the hard part: consistency, finishing, and discovering the identity of the team.
