In this deeply personal and wide‑ranging conversation, host Esi Lewis sits down with Dr. Darrell P. Wheeler, the first Black and first openly gay president of SUNY New Paltz, to trace the journey that shaped his life, leadership, and sense of purpose.
Dr. Wheeler reflects on his childhood in Chicago’s vibrant yet segregated South Side, recalling the strength of Black institutions—teachers, doctors, churches, and businesses—that surrounded him. He describes how attending all‑Black schools provided a foundation of confidence and belonging, even as he navigated challenges.
The episode follows Wheeler through his academic path—from Cornell College in rural Iowa, to the Air Force, to Howard University, ultimately leading him to presidencies and provostships across the country before arriving in New Paltz.
Throughout the conversation, Wheeler offers grounded advice for students.
