ABOUT THIS EPISODE
The Washington Commanders are getting closer to roster cut day, and Sean Anderson is projecting the team's final 53-man roster on defense. Washington's defense has improved heading into the 2026 NFL season, but there are still plenty of difficult decisions ahead. Some position groups have legitimate competition, while others could force Washington to make another move before Week 1. The defensive line starts with several players who appear locked into roster spots. Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw and Tim Settle are expected to remain important pieces, while Washington waits for Jer'Zhan Newton to return. Sean believes Washington has talent up front, but questions whether the team has enough difference makers if the defensive line becomes too reliant on rotation players. The linebacker room may be the strongest group on the defense. Sonny Styles is locked in after being selected as one of Washington's foundational defensive pieces. Frankie Luvu and K'Lavon Chaisson provide veteran pass-rush upside, while Joshua Josephs and other young linebackers compete for depth and special teams roles. The biggest challenge for Washington could be deciding which linebackers provide enough value to keep on the roster. At cornerback, Washington has several reliable options, including Trey Amos, Mike Sainristil and Mike Robertson. Sean believes Jonathan Mingo can provide value as well, but the rest of the room remains a question. The safety position is where things become more complicated. Sean believes Washington's defensive backfield needs another addition before facing Philadelphia in Week 1. The Commanders cannot afford to enter the season without enough answers in coverage against elite NFC receivers. The question for Washington is whether they are comfortable with their current roster or whether they continue searching for upgrades before the regular season begins.
