ABOUT THIS EPISODE
A peasant with no title, no wealth, and no education ended up whispering advice into the ears of Russia's royal family.
In this episode of Voices Through History, Anlie Hatting interviews Grigori Rasputin - the man history remembers as the Mad Monk, the Black Monk, the Holy Devil. To his followers, a miracle worker sent by God. To his enemies, a fraud, a manipulator, and a threat to the Russian Empire itself.
He claimed he could save a dying heir to the throne when Russia's greatest doctors couldn't. He became the Empress's closest confidant, and the most hated man in the country - sometimes in the very same breath.
Was he a healer? A predator? A prophet who saw his own death coming? Rasputin answers for all of it — the rumours, the palace, and the empire that collapsed within months of his murder.
The Holy Devil.
