►Tell us about you and your podcast

My name is Robert Ottone, and I'm a teacher from Long Island.

My podcast is called Voices From Gilgo and it's about the unsolved murders of numerous women found on the south shore of Long Island, courtesy of what many refer to as the Long Island Serial Killer.

My listeners are true crime fans and those obsessed with the unsolved case of the Long Island Serial Killer.

►Why & how did you start this podcast?

I have a history of radio, courtesy of my dad, Bob Ottone, and have done podcasts in the past, so I thought this story would make a good "in real time"-type podcast.

My goals and motivation have remained the same since starting the show - to keep the case of the Long Island Serial Killer in the public eye. It's a case that's seemingly been forgotten by law enforcement, so, it's important for true crime fans and residents of Long Island to carry the torch.

►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?

We release episodes twice a month, and it typically take me a few hours to record and edit the show. I like to keep the show focused on commute-length, because anything longer than that, in my opinion, is wasted.

The year is winding to a close, and I'm out of work in the afternoon, so I record or write typically at night or in the evenings.

The podcast is funded entirely by me.

►What do you gain from podcasting?

I don't take any sponsorship, this particular series is for love of the game.

The podcast is beneficial to me in the sense that it's keeping the case open, and since there has yet to be an arrest in the case, I'm hoping that the buzz and discussion I've heard about the podcast is doing it's job.

►How does your podcasting process look like?

I use a Macbook, an old pair of headphones and Audacity to edit. Guests have typically come to me, and to prepare for each episode, I write a script or a rough outline of what I'm talking about.

I prefer to interview guests over the phone. When that isn't possible, email works fine.

►How do you market your show?

Voices From Gilgo can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, PocketCasts and more. On Instagram and Twitter, we can be followed @VoicesFromGilgo. We are also on Facebook, if you search "Voices From Gilgo." I try to update regularly on social media.

►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?

Audacity definitely takes some time to master. I always find myself getting annoyed at how not intuitive it is.

Don't be afraid to reach out to your favorite podcasters, since that's what I did, I received responses and guidance that was incredibly valuable to me.
