ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Former NFL wide receiver Dede Westbrook (Oklahoma, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers) joins the show for one of the most personal, in-depth guest conversations yet — life after football, the real reason he chose to retire, a hard look at how injuries get managed in the league, wild rookie-year and locker room stories from a stacked 2018 Jaguars defense, and how he's building a post-NFL business empire from the ground up.
Episode Timeline00:00 — Cold Open The usual intro banter kicking things off.
00:17 — Welcome: Dede Westbrook Joins the Show Introductions all around as former Oklahoma and NFL wide receiver Dede Westbrook joins as this episode's guest.
00:48 — Life After Football Dede opens up on the transition out of the league — adjusting to a new day-to-day, and the upside of finally having real time with his kids and family.
01:09 — The NFL Brotherhood A conversation about staying in touch with former teammates after retirement — Dede describes it as a genuine, low-maintenance bond (Sterling Shepard and Baker Mayfield come up as examples) where time apart never really changes the relationship.
02:56 — Retired Life, Day to Day A lighter stretch about adjusting to a slower pace — daily naps, a donut shop run he's now a regular at, and settling into a new routine centered around his kids' schedules.
05:28 — What Fatherhood Looks Like Now The conversation turns serious — Dede shares that he became a father at 15 and had three kids by the time he left high school, and reflects on what it meant to miss years of his oldest son's life while playing.
06:56 — The Real Reason He Retired One of the episode's most powerful moments — Dede explains that watching his son grow up largely without him (including a moment where his son reacted awkwardly to physical affection, not being used to it) was a driving factor in choosing to walk away from football while he still had gas in the tank, in order to be present.
09:49 — Missing the Moments That Matter More reflection on the cost of the football lifestyle — team relocations (Jacksonville to Detroit to Carolina), missing holidays with his kids, experiencing Christmas over FaceTime, and having his first real Christmas together as a family only two years ago.
13:05 — Public vs. Private School Debate A thoughtful back-and-forth on choosing schools for their kids — weighing diversity, academic quality, and access to sports programs.
17:13 — College Football Check-In: Oklahoma Dede gives his read on Oklahoma's current season outlook, praising the quarterback's improved passing after a run-heavy prior year, and the importance of a balanced offensive attack in the SEC.
19:16 — Playing Down to Competition & Season Predictions A friendly debate about whether elite programs play down to weaker opponents early in the season, plus predictions heading into a big upcoming matchup.
22:05 — Bryce Underwood & Blocking Out Media Noise A conversation about the pressure on a high-profile young quarterback (Bryce Underwood) and how difficult it really is for any athlete to tune out public criticism once it's a tap away on their phone — Dede speaks candidly from his own experience dealing with fan and media criticism as a rookie.
24:27 — Family as an Anchor: The "Golden Rule" Dede shares a personal coping mechanism from his rookie year — a household rule that football was never discussed at home unless he brought it up himself, which he credits with keeping his head clear through good and bad games.
26:23 — The 2018 AFC Championship Season, From the Outside A conversation about what it was like walking into a Jacksonville team that had just come off an AFC Championship run — and the culture shock of a locker room still riding high off that success.
27:37 — Culture Shock as a Rookie Dede recalls arriving from a winning Oklahoma program to a team that had gone 1-15 the year before, and the disciplinarian coaching style that reshaped the locker room in his rookie season.
28:49 — The Sports Hernia Story A serious, detailed account of developing a sports hernia early in his rookie season — being flown to Philadelphia weekly for cortisone shots and told to play through it, before a veteran teammate (Aaron Colvin) stepped in and convinced him to push for surgery instead of masking the pain.
34:08 — Old-School Coaching Culture More on the strict, disciplinarian environment of his rookie year — including having to ask permission just to fly home during a bye week — and how tension built between players and coaching staff over time.
39:03 — That Stacked 2018 Jaguars Defense A nostalgic run through the personalities on Jacksonville's loaded 2018 defense — Jalen Ramsey, AJ Bouye, Malik Jackson, Barry Church, and more — and the edge that group brought to practice every day.
43:29 — Locker Room Freestyle Sessions A fun tangent about recording music in a home studio and passing tracks back and forth with teammates in the locker room — including a viral clip that resurfaced on TikTok years later.
44:36 — Rookie Year War Story: The Seattle Seahawks Game A detailed, entertaining story from Dede's first career game — a veteran Seahawks cornerback trying to talk him out of running hard routes, only for Dede to make him pay for it with a big play.
48:01 — Jacksonville's Community Connection A memorable story about police officers visiting the team facility during their playoff run, crediting the team's winning streak with helping lower the city's crime rate.
49:16 — Music & Locker Room Bonding More reflection on the home-studio culture among the receiver room, and a broader point about how team camaraderie differs between college (living together, constantly around each other) and the NFL (players scattering the moment practice ends).
52:02 — The Terrelle Pryor Story A wild story about a teammate who would reportedly fly home to Pittsburgh every single night after practice and fly back the next morning — a detail that later became part of a bigger story about him.
56:15 — Building Life After Football: The Business Ventures Dede opens up about the businesses he's built since retiring — a trucking company with six semi trucks, a food truck, a mobile detailing service, a basketball gym, and real estate — all working toward a goal of matching his NFL earnings off the field.
58:02 — Staying Hungry: Driving Through the Old Neighborhood A candid, reflective moment about intentionally driving through less fortunate areas to stay grounded and motivated, and the drive to build generational wealth for his kids.
59:10 — Discipline Over Distraction Dede explains his current mindset — minimizing partying, jewelry, and outside distractions while locked in on hitting his business goals.
1:01:03 — "We Had a Cheat Code to Life" A grounded, grateful reflection on the opportunity football provided — comparing it to friends outside the league working just as hard without the physical toll (CTE and injury risk included) for similar or better pay.
1:03:21 — Choosing Presence Over the Grind The conversation circles back to fatherhood — Dede shares a moment when his daughter's school assignment described him as always being on the couch, and his intention to make sure that changes.
1:04:24 — NFL Season Preview & Picks The episode wraps with a look ahead to the new NFL season — hype for Aaron Donald's on-field return alongside Myles Garrett, a 49ers vs. Rams pick, and a few more Week 1 predictions (Patriots, Seahawks) to close things out.
1:07:09 — Outro Thanks and sign-off, with Dede thanking the crew for having him on.
