ABOUT THIS EPISODE
James thinks Bryson stepped down that rough on purpose and that every golfer watching knows exactly what happened. Jeff thinks one camera angle isn't the whole story, and that the rule is so subjective you can't hang a guy on it. They go at it for six minutes — Patrick Reed's bunker, the fescue at the Internet Invitational, whether a subconscious step even counts as cheating — and neither one gives an inch.
Then it stops being about the pros. Jeff admits on the mic that he's watched James's ball move when he settles his club in the rough, and that he's never once called the penalty. Not because he didn't see it. Because he decided the argument wasn't worth what it would cost.
Which is the setup for the story we didn't expect to tell this week: after our major at McCrae, somebody in the league quietly reached out to Jeff about a drop he took on the first hole. Nobody saw it. Nobody would ever have known. He was ready to disqualify himself over it. We're keeping his name out of this, but that's the guy the whole game is supposed to be built on — and it exposed something we need to fix, because none of us actually know where the stakes are on that hole.
The rest of the major is its own movie. The Discord melted down the night before over one message about which tees people were playing. James and Matt trade the lead all afternoon on greens that roll like glass. James triples 16 and tells Matt his name's going on the trophy. Then he putts through a divot somebody left three feet from the cup on 17 — "no pebble or stone is gonna take my glory" — and stands on 18 with 65 yards in and forty people on the balcony, an inch away from a walk-off eagle. Sixth McCrae title in ten years.
Plus: Charlie Woods gets camera-clicked mid-swing at the U.S. Junior Amateur and the internet decides golfers are soft, Ryan Fox pulls the trigger in seven seconds while Cantlay takes forty-five (and Jeff makes an annoying case that slow might be correct), the season finale at Randall Oaks on August 2 with the cut line, the bye and a bounty on Tom all still alive, and the permits are officially filed for Simmies Golf in Carol Stream.
Would you have called the penalty on your own brother? And be honest — would you have turned yourself in? Let us know.
