00:00:09.439 --> 00:00:12.800
Welcome back to the Universal Radio Networks Turn It Up Podcast.
00:00:12.960 --> 00:00:24.640
This is Ravia, and here is my conversation with Jasmine, who runs Get Off Beat right here in Edmonton, a creative space for everyone to make friends and even bring your friends to.
00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:26.480
Let's get into the conversation.
00:00:40.880 --> 00:00:42.799
Welcome back to the Universal Radio Network.
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:43.759
My name is Rabia.
00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:47.600
I have the great pleasure of sitting with Jasmine from Get Off Beat.
00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:49.119
Hi Jasmine, how are you?
00:00:49.359 --> 00:00:49.840
I'm good.
00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:50.560
How are you?
00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:51.920
I'm so well.
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:57.520
My first question is getting into what is Get Off Beat?
00:00:58.320 --> 00:00:58.719
Sure.
00:00:58.880 --> 00:01:05.760
So Get Off Beat is, I would say, a community for all creative people and makers in Edmonton.
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:12.640
So um the idea was like this was something which had in my mind for a long time now.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:20.560
But how it started was I wanted to do something in the creative space with my background being a designer for almost eight years now.
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:48.560
So I just wanted to create a community for creative people makers who can come, show their skills, teach it to others, and just share their skills with others, and also um just doing meetups and workshops where people can come in, they can find new people, they can find their friends because adult friendships are so tough to do, and the niche I want to create is definitely in something creative.
00:01:48.799 --> 00:01:49.519
Something creative.
00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:49.920
Yeah.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:57.760
So you say you're a designer, that's your background, what do you design, and what is the creative space that you find yourself in most often?
00:01:58.079 --> 00:01:58.959
Of course.
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:02.719
Um, so I am a creative director and branding designer.
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:12.319
So I've worked with different startups, agencies, and different brands working on their social media side, their web design, their overall branding and structure.
00:02:12.879 --> 00:02:16.800
And I've been working with marketing teams for almost eight years now.
00:02:17.039 --> 00:02:30.000
So, and apart from this, I would also say I have been doing embroidery since I was a kid with my mother and my grandmother always having fabrics around, colors, embroidery threads, and everything.
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:31.360
So it all started from there.
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:32.639
That's amazing.
00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:33.840
So tell me about that.
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.039
Tell me about your upbringing and your heritage and how that's influenced your creative journey.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:45.360
Yeah, so I would say with while I was growing up, my mother was a designer as well.
00:02:45.520 --> 00:02:45.919
No way.
00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:50.800
So that's where I would say it came from.
00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:57.439
I've seen, I've grown up actually with fabrics and embroidery and all the different kinds of colours.
00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:04.719
And like I come from India, so India is a place full of heritage, culture, and colours.
00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:08.639
In every city, you see a different kind of art style or art form.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:11.120
So all the inspiration came from there.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:18.719
I actually studied fashion and then I slowly moved into graphic design, but I studied fashion and textile design.
00:03:18.960 --> 00:03:23.439
You studied fashion and textile design, and then you moved into graphic design.
00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:23.759
Yeah.
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:25.120
So you've been in the design space.
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:27.840
You said your mother uh is a designer, was a designer.
00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:29.199
What was she working on?
00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:31.199
She was a fashion designer as well.
00:03:31.439 --> 00:03:36.000
She is not pursuing it anymore, but she did it for like almost 15 years.
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:36.479
Wow.
00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:39.280
And then you were like, I like this, I want to follow this.
00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:40.639
It was something that was in your home.
00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:42.639
You say you were you grew up doing embroidery.
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:45.039
But you said you started it when you were like six years old.
00:03:45.199 --> 00:03:45.759
Is that right?
00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:47.759
Yeah, I would say like eight years, right?
00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:48.800
Eight years old, okay.
00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:52.080
But as a kid, I would say I started it learning as a kid.
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:52.400
Yeah.
00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:58.479
And you found that like that creative, creative like action was a good place for you to make friends and connection.
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:01.680
How did you did you find that actually when you were younger?
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:08.080
Um, it's it's just every time I used to go to my mother's workshop, I could see a lot of carrighers sitting there.
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:11.039
Carigures are like um the people who do embroidery.
00:04:11.439 --> 00:04:16.560
So I always found them seeing like they were doing something with the fabric and needles.
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:24.720
So it just fascinated me a lot during like when I was watching them, and then slowly I started picking up the needle, the threads.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:28.560
And trust me, when I started, it was like just rough.
00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:34.720
It was it wasn't perfect, but then slowly now I feel like I feel confident with my work.
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:39.120
Because doing embroidery is an incredibly patient process.
00:04:39.279 --> 00:04:39.439
Yeah.
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:46.720
Because I've embroidered myself, and it is like each tiny stitch you make is just one part of this huge picture and takes a long time.
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:48.720
A lot of time, yeah, it does.
00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:50.959
And it's so good to know that you've done it as well.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:53.920
Yeah, I learned um in like a actually a workshop.
00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:54.639
That's interesting.
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:56.959
I had a workshop with my cousin like 10 years ago.
00:04:57.439 --> 00:05:03.839
And then from there I've like done on a little bit of dabbled in it, not in a professional way or anything, but okay.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:05.360
It is something that I've like learned from.
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:08.800
It's definitely so it's one of those crafts where you're like, you know, working with your hands.
00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:11.360
It definitely teaches you something about yourself as well.
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:12.079
It does.
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:20.000
Um, so like you're saying that you had this urge to start get off beat to like help create this community and connect with people.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:22.319
Um, how has that been going?
00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:24.800
Um, I would say it's been going good.
00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:29.839
Uh, the idea had been with me for a long time, but I just didn't have the courage to start it.
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:32.720
So one day I just thought I'll start it anyway.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:34.240
I'll just put something out there.
00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:36.560
What gave you that courage to start it?
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:42.399
Um, so when I moved to Canada, it was um a bit tough in start because it's very tough to make friends.
00:05:42.480 --> 00:05:44.160
I did not know anybody over here.
00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:46.800
And I wanted to go out and meet people.
00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:52.959
So I did go to a few meetups, but it was just uh I couldn't connect a lot with people at that time.
00:05:53.199 --> 00:05:56.959
And then I took a break after two years and went back home.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:06:03.680
And when I went back, I was so inspired with everything happening in India, like all those colours again and everything.
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:07.680
So when I came back, it just motivated me that okay, let's do it again.
00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:13.680
Why, like, why do I always have to think that I'm not able to make friends, I'm not able to meet people?
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:14.959
Maybe I just started.
00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:17.279
You like were like, let's change this narrative.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:17.600
Yeah.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:19.279
So, what about that trip to India?
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:20.879
Like you said, the colours inspired you.
00:06:20.959 --> 00:06:25.279
What about that trip to India where it's like gave you that courage to be like, let's start something?
00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:29.360
Um, I would say everything around me just motivated me a lot.
00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:31.920
It was um me traveling to different places.
00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:35.839
I went to Goa, Delhi, Punjab, Chaipur.
00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:38.800
So all of these places just motivated me so much.
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.759
Everything about the culture, the colours.
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:44.160
I so wanted to like bring everything from there.
00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:45.199
Yeah, I just wanted to pull it.
00:06:45.439 --> 00:06:48.240
You were letting me put it in my suitcase and just bring it with me.
00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:48.560
Yeah.
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:55.680
So it was almost like you were inspired by the culture and being like immersed in it again and being reminded of where you come from.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:06:56.079
Right.
00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:59.600
And then you're like, let's start something, let's bring this into the world.
00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:02.800
How has that impacted the way you run your workshops?
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:07.920
Um, so the way I run my workshops, a lot of workshops are embroidery-based.
00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:10.560
And then I also collaborate with different artists.
00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:14.399
So recently we did a yoga and mock tail session.
00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:26.879
So the way yoga workshop was conducted was uh very much rooted with our culture, how we start the practice, and also everybody loved the authenticity of that whole thing.
00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:30.160
And then with workshops, like embroidery workshops as well.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:38.959
People love to learn those stitches, which um are super simple when you learn in person, but when it happens online, you wash the news.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:42.079
I've done a YouTube video tutorial before, and it's like tough.
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:43.759
You're like, wait, which way do I put it?
00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:44.399
So I get that.
00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:44.720
Exactly.
00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:46.959
Being in person is so much better for that learning point.
00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:47.439
Exactly.
00:07:47.519 --> 00:07:48.560
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:07:48.879 --> 00:07:54.959
And then, like, let's just say there's someone who is looking to come to a group.
00:07:55.600 --> 00:07:59.040
What would you tell them to like invite them in?
00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:03.360
I just always say it's a very inclusive place for you.
00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:06.160
You can find your tribe, just come with an open mind.
00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:10.560
You don't have to worry about how will I talk to people, how will I chill up if I'm coming alone.
00:08:10.720 --> 00:08:16.079
Because a lot of people like to come with friends, but sometimes there are solo crafters who are coming alone.
00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:24.399
So and just make sure the room is so full of warmth and it's so welcoming that anybody who comes in, they just feel like they belong here.
00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:26.480
How many workshops have you had so far?
00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:28.000
I would say roughly seven.
00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:28.399
Okay.
00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:30.879
Because I just started, like just starting, you're just growing.
00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:33.279
I mean, hopefully, this you know brings more people to this.
00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:40.320
Because I think there is like a want in the community for this connection over craft or learning something.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:44.000
So I think that's a beautiful, beautiful start to your journey.
00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:47.039
Where do you see Get Off Beat going?
00:08:47.840 --> 00:09:05.039
Um, I want Get Off Beat to want to be that one sole place for any local maker or artist who want to collaborate and host a workshop, teach their skill to others, but just don't know where to start because anybody can post their events online.
00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:16.559
But if you get that whole ecosystem where you can just you just have to tell me that this is what I do, this is what I want to teach, and then I'll create that whole experience from for you.
00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:23.039
And yeah, and also like this is one use case, the other use case would definitely be the attendees.
00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:31.039
Anybody who wants to do something creative, I want them to remember get off beat and they can just see all the meetups happening and everything.
00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:31.600
Amazing.
00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:34.000
Tell me actually, I'm gonna take a step back here.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:35.200
Get off beat.
00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:36.720
How did you come up with that name?
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:42.639
Okay, so this name and logo is something which I designed in 2025.
00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:43.200
Okay.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:44.799
It was just sitting in my laptop.
00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:46.159
I didn't know just a thought.
00:09:46.320 --> 00:09:46.799
Just a thought.
00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:52.159
Was it like meant for something like this workshop space or um it was actually meant.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:56.399
Like I wanted to interview people and know their stories.
00:09:57.360 --> 00:09:58.960
Hey, it's only three.
00:09:59.840 --> 00:10:01.279
That's what I wanted to start with.
00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:07.440
But it's just everything just happened on its own, everything fell in place, and get off beat.
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:10.320
The brand came to this creative space.
00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:11.600
That's how it happened.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:12.799
That's so interesting.
00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:20.000
That the brand was like created first, and then the idea behind it was created, which is just like a testament to like the work that you do.
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:21.759
You're in marketing, that's the world you're in.
00:10:21.840 --> 00:10:23.519
So that makes so much sense.
00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:24.240
I love that.
00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:30.159
Um, if there's any artists that are wanna wanting to work with you in creating a workshop, where can they reach you?
00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:35.519
So I'm working on my website, which will be live very soon any week, I would say.
00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:36.000
Yeah.
00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:41.840
And then also on our Instagram page, we have a Google form which they can fill in with all their details.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:47.759
And I regularly check all my emails and the Google form, so and even my DMs, I would say.
00:10:47.840 --> 00:10:50.240
So I would be involved there.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:51.360
That's amazing.
00:10:51.519 --> 00:10:53.360
I'm so grateful for this conversation.
00:10:53.519 --> 00:10:54.720
Thank you so much for coming in.
00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:56.320
Thank you so much for having me.
00:10:56.480 --> 00:11:01.039
You guys have a lovely platform, and I'm so happy you're doing this.
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:03.759
It's it's just so good to be here and put the word out.
00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:05.519
