ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Is body dysmorphia a "false body" or a fallen nature? Paul's "inner man" vs. Rogers, Freud, Jung, and Susie Orbach's "inner body." Part 2 of the series.
What does the Bible say about body dysmorphia, self-loathing, and body image? In this episode we compare Pauline theology with modern psychology: Freud ("know yourself"), Jung ("integrate yourself"), Carl Rogers ("accept yourself"), and Jesus ("deny yourself"). Then we look at psychotherapist Susie Orbach's idea of the "inner body" and the "false body," and ask what Paul would say about it.
In this episode:
• Freud, Jung, and Rogers: what each says is wrong with us and what each says we need
• Why Rogers' self-actualization may be the most dangerous idea of the three
• The Moses leprous hand (Exodus 4): what happens when we keep reaching inside ourselves
• Susie Orbach's "inner body" and "false body" vs. Paul's "old man"
• Body dysmorphia is real. Here is why it is still not who you are
• "In everything give thanks": gratitude as a response to body image struggles
• The bird flying over your head vs. the bird building a nest in your hair
• Why Paul sees body distress as a symptom of a deeper spiritual problem
• 2 Corinthians 4:16: the outward man perishing while the inward man is renewed day by day
• The goal: not an accurately embodied self, but Christ dwelling in you (Ephesians 3:17)
KEY TAKEAWAY: Psychology often seeks accurate embodiment and self-acceptance. Paul seeks regeneration. The question isn't only "How do I feel about my body?" but "How is Christ transforming who I am?"
