ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Thirty minutes into the ADCC final, Gavin Corbe was running on nothing. Watching the clip back, he says his eyes looked like he was in REM sleep. The only thing keeping him in the match was his brother DeAndre and Greg yelling from the corner, like someone mashing a button on a controller until it finally went through. He'd already decided the match was ending in that overtime, one way or another.
He came out the other side with silver and a new limit. As he jokes, he unlocked his third lung. Anything under 30 minutes is easy now.
Gavin and I break down the whole run: getting in through trials, cutting from 162 to 145 in under three weeks, why he attacks the legs in sub only, and the pacing mistake he'll only make once. They also get into toughness being relative to what you've already survived, why combat sports expose a kind of hunger and fatigue most athletes never feel, and why he's not chasing a strength program anytime soon.
Plus Black Box, coaching alongside DeAndre, the falling out that made them closer, and a weight cut story from a Polish sauna house that has to be heard to be believed.
He closes on something more athletes need to hear: grappling is what he does, not who he is.
