Ruth is situated after the book of Judges and before the book of 1 Samuel. And that location between those two books is deliberate and ancient.

If you turn back one page from the beginning of Ruth to the end of the book of Judges, you'll find this summary of what the days of the Judges were like in Judges 21-25.

In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own time.

So then the days of the Judges were lawless times.

That's the same King David that we know so well.

This is one of the main purposes of the book of Ruth, to explain the origin of the Davidic royal dynasty.
