ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this article from the Spring 2026 issue of Transition Magazine, Pierre Essoh explores the unique accessibility challenges facing Nunavut and the importance of developing solutions grounded in Inuit knowledge and local realities. Drawing on territory-wide research conducted by Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society (NDMS), he highlights barriers to housing, healthcare, transportation, and community participation experienced by people with disabilities across the North.
Essoh argues that meaningful accessibility cannot rely on southern models alone, but must be shaped by the voices, cultures, and lived experiences of Nunavummiut.
Transition Magazine is the flagship publication of Disability Alliance BC, sharing cross-disability perspectives, resources, and stories from across British Columbia.
